New book explores life along the Miami River BY LEE STEPHENS

he newest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s “Images of America” series is Along the Miami River from local author Paul S. George. The book boasts more than 200 vintage images of this Florida region. Although the Miami River originally was just 4.5 miles in length, it has been a robust working river since the incorporation of Miami in 1896. With a volume of trade exceeding $4 billion annually, the Miami River has been central to the story of Miami for thousands of years. Native Miamians lived along the river for millennia and used it as their “expressway,” as well as their source for food and water. The riverbanks have been home to exotic animals, Jesuit missions,

Even with the postWorld War II rise of suburbia and the flight of residents away from the center of the city, the river has remained busy. Today, with a renaissance in central Miami, there has been a significant increase in appreciation for the role of the river in this revival and in the rich history of the city. Solar Dogs, Shell Lumber join for benefit event Gloria Burns GLORIA’S GAB The Solar Dogs recently teamed up with Shell Lumber for an evening of fun that featured two live bands, local artists, food trucks and more for its fourth annual Howl in the Wood. The idea for this annual event started with a chance meeting between Solar Dogs’ Bill Kunz, a retired Pan American pilot, and Paul Naron, owner of Shell Lumber at Coconut Grove Sailing Club five years ago. Once Naron offered the site for the event, band members then looked for ways to involve the Coconut Grove community and called on artists and food vendors to participate.

From the start it was a great success and has become an event that everyone looks forward to attending every year. Kunz expressed his appreciation to Shell Lumber for generously donating the site and its president, Jesus Guzman, who helped with the logistics for this year’s event. Wanting to find a way to give back again this year, Kunz approached Shake-A-Legs’ Kathleen Harris to orchestrate a way for Shake-A-Leg to not only raise money through the sale of $500 worth of Howl in the Wood tickets but also provide space at the event for Shake-A-Leg to solicit donations and promote its many programs. It was a win-win for all. Guests not only enjoyed the music of Coconut Grove’s own Solar Dogs but a great opening act by Avocado Estate from the UM School of Music. Kunz and his band have plans to provide a free concert in the fall at ShakeA-Leg as well. On the art scene, the Wynwood Exhibition Center held an exhibition the

evening of Apr. 13 where Nancy M a rtini and other environmentally conscious artists explored the connection between nature and urban life as a way to inspire the concept of growing food wherever a pocket of nutrient rich soil can be found in our overbuilt and stressed communities. Each sculpture used an upcycled item to symbolize everyday urban life and human impact on the environment and brown paper to mimic brown grocery bags, representing our relationship with store purchased food as well as to unite man, objects and nature. Viewing the art really makes one conscious of how much waste we produce that can be repurposed. On the club scene, the GFWC Coco Plum Woman’s Club conducted its annual bridge/card party on Mar. 20. A crowd of 75 attended the affair all of whom enjoyed the food for the luncheon prepared by the members. The affair raised $ 2,000, which was donated to Feeding Florida Food Bank. Sunny Fraser puts a new twist on a glass of wine BY GARY ALAN RUSE

When local wine lover Sunny Fraser wanted to make fine wines available for sampling to more people, she literally had to invent her own way to do it. The result was a singleserving wine package called “The Vini” that is spreading across South Florida. Developed with her partner David Gordon, The Vini is a sleek glass tube with an 187ml serving equivalent to a quarter of a regular sized bottle of wine. It currently is available with a California Napa wine based on Zinfandel and a California Sonoma wine based on Chardonnay. But getting there wasn’t easy. “The most difficult obstacle of this project was the fabrication of our custom 187ml glass vial,” Fraser said. “It seems so simple, because most people view it as a glass tube with a screw cap. However, the length of the design and the neck threads had never been contemplated on this type of glass before, so there has been a lot of blood, sweat and tears.” Fraser, blond haired and green-eyed, was born in the Dominican Republic, grew up in a small-town in the Midwest, then moved to South Florida the latter part of her high school years, attending Miami Palmetto High, the University of Florida and Barry

University. She worked at Gibraltar Bank and Trust before working at Sunbox Eleven Winery. Gordon grew up in Pinecrest, went to Ransom-Everglades and now lives in Palmetto Bay. Since their bottling factory is in Sonoma, CA they spend part of their time there as well. The Vini currently is available at Joe’s Stone Crab Take Away, Eden Roc Renaissance, South Beach Marriott, PGA

National Resort & Spa, Joanna’s Marketplace and other retailers, restaurants and hotels. It also can be purchased through their website. Fraser said that the packaging gets a good response from people when they see it for the first time. “People are always intrigued and enthused by The Vini,” she said. “Our internal joke is that it’s ‘the puppy.’ People want to hold it

and touch it. Once they have it in hand, they don’t want to let it go. It’s so tactile and engages all of the senses. When they taste it, they continue to be impressed.” She said that hotels are a primary market for The Vini. As mini-bars become a thing of the past, in-room amenities are becoming their replacement. “The Vini offers the guest a convenient, fresh, delicious glass of fine wine without opening an entire bottle or half-bottle as has been the only offering in-room previously,” Fraser said. “It also provides the hotel with a luxury lifestyle offering that inspires impulse buys with its unique, elegant and sexy package. It’s easy to consider having a glass of wine in-room, but having an entire bottle is too much of a commitment.” Although she encourages people who have a new idea to pursue it, she also cautions them to go into it knowing that it will take a lot of hard work. “Any endeavor requires total commitment and 110 percent of your time,” Fraser said. “It is not for the faint of heart and sleep isn’t an option. You must be totally devoted to your vision and keep believing, even through the challenges. And there’ll be challenges.” For information visit their website at <www.thevini.com>.

NWSA’s College Spring Dance Concert to present an exciting, varied program BY MARIA M. FLORES

This year’s New World School of the Arts’ College Spring Dance Concert will be an exciting and varied program, featuring the work of two faculty choreographers — a ballet, Closet 5716, by ballet faculty member Gerard Ebitz, and a new work by faculty member Peter London, Seoul Soul, inspired by the dance and music traditions of Korea. The College Spring Dance Concert starts at 7:30 p.m. on Apr. 25, 26 and 27, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Apr. 28, at New World Dance Theater, 25 NE Second St., Eighth Floor. General admission is $12, students and seniors are $5. Tickets are available at <nwsa.mdc.edu>. Information about the BFA Dance Concert is available at 305237-3341. The program also will feature the work of four guest artists — two at the cutting edge of dance making and two masters of the modern dance era. Lily, a new work by popular up-andcoming choreographer Kyle Abrahams (Abraham.In.Motion dance company) is a fusion of hip-hop, jazz, modern, and ballet styles with a dramatic, urban sensibility. The Virgin Queen, created in 2011 by

Darshan Singh Bhuller, is a tour de force work evoking the era of Queen Elizabeth through 21st Century eyes, using film projection technology to transport the audience back in time, and going back and forth from the music of that era to the rock music of 1980s England. NWSA dancers will perform the groundbreaking work of Merce Cunningham in the form of a Mini Event created for this group of dancers by former Merce Cunningham dancer Patricia Lent and comprised of sections of three of his most important works: Roaratorio (1982), Enter (1992), and Fabrications (1987). And finally, the dancers will perform Jose Limon’s final work, completed after his death by former dean of the Dance Division Daniel Lewis, Waldstein Sonata, set to Beethoven’s lush and moving Waldstein Sonata for the piano, which will be performed live by New World School of the Arts provost Jeffrey Hodgson. New World School of the Arts dance students receive instruction from accomplished dancers and choreographers and grow through disciplined guidance and training as they develop their personal style and repertoire. Through its educational partnerships, NWSA’s audition-based

programs, accredited by the National Association of Schools of Dance, Music, Theater and Art and Design, offer the high school diploma as well as the BFA and BM college degrees. Areas of concentration in dance include Ballet, Choreography, Modern Dance and World Dance.

New World School of the Arts was created by the Florida Legislature as a center of excellence in the performing and visual arts. It is an educational partnership of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Miami Dade College and the University of Florida.

Association Law Group joins ranks of businesses moving to Brickell BY ANTONIA DONATO

A fast-growing law firm, Association Law Group (ALG), has joined the ranks of leading businesses populating Downtown Miami’s Brickell neighborhood. Association Law Group recently signed a lease for 10,000 square feet of initial space, with an option to expand, in the penthouse suite of 1200 Brickell Avenue. This new office space was selected by ALG to provide ample room for its thriving law practice that represents over 500 condominiums and homeowner associations in more than 16 different counties throughout Florida as general counsel with a particular focus on the collection of past due assessments. Among other top clients in Miami, ALG represents condominiums including One Miami, Blue, Mosaic, Venetia, Latitude West, 1110 Brickell and the prestigious Bay Pointe Community. In just five years, Association Law Group has grown from a two-person law practice to nationally recognized law firm with 15 attorneys and over 50 staff members. What is the secret to ALG’s success? Simply put, providing condo-

minium and homeowner associations in Florida with exceptional, innovative legal representation. ALG has helped countless associations

throughout Florida recover from financial ruin by standing up to big banks and zealously fighting for past due maintenance fees to help associations get back on track

after the shock of the real estate crisis. In fact, ALG conceptualized an array of new legal tools to help struggling associations, including the Mortgage Terminator, which was applauded in Florida and across the U.S. Specifically, the Mortgage Terminator was created by ALG to help address the problematic situation facing associations when banks stall their foreclosure actions to avoid paying back maintenance fees. These are fees associations need to keep the buildings up and running. ALG took these big banks to court and forced them into a legal ultimatum of either immediately accepting title to these defaulted condo units or walking away and releasing their mortgages from such units so its clients could sell them and recover the past due amounts. “ALG’s move to Brickell marks a new chapter for our firm” explained Ben Solomon, managing partner of ALG. “Our new office located at 1200 Brickell Ave. will allow ALG to continue its growth and represent even more condominium and homeowner associations throughout Florida.”

Grove at Grand Bay to create lasting impact on S. Bayshore

Rising 20 stories over the bayfront, the two towers of the Grove at Grand Bay will showcase 96 expansive residences with panoramic views from every angle. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

BY SABRINA LACLE

The Grove at Grand Bay residences, located on the former site of the Grand Bay Hotel and just minutes from key areas —including Miami Internationl Airport, downtown Miami and Coral Gables — is designed to leave a lasting imprint on S. Bayshore Drive, redefining luxury and breathing new life into Coconut Grove for decades to come. Developed by Terra Group, Miami’s leading real-estate development company, construction is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2014. Upon completion, the project seeks LEED Certification Silver designation, the first such structure in Coconut Grove. “Grove at Grand Bay’s impressive aesthetic and unparalleled service are tantamount to the evolution of Coconut Grove and raises the bar to Olympic heights,” said Pedro Martin, chair, CEO and founder of Terra Group. Rising 20 stories over the bayfront, Grove at Grand Bay will showcase 96 expansive residences with panoramic views from every angle as the two towers take off from the ground and clear the surrounding buildings, readjusting their orientation to capture the full breadth of panoramic views from Sailboat Bay to the marina to the Miami skyline. The interactive movement of the two towers creates a new dancing silhouette on the Grove’s skyline. “Miami has developed a contemporary condominium vernacular that combines brise soleil style balcony shading with floor-

to-ceiling windows in order to best enjoy the panoramic water views of the area,” said Bjarke Ingels, founding partner of BIG. “We propose to elaborate on these indigenous elements and continue the evolution of the local condominium architecture.” Whether in the shade of the buildings’ twisting facades or inside, residents of the Grove at Grand Bay will experience fully and relish living amid the open air. The gardens and architecture will fuse seamlessly at the amenity levels, maximizing indoor-outdoor living experiences that are unique to the South Florida climate. Views down into the gardens, towards the surrounding canopied neighborhoods, and beyond Sailboat Bay will offer peaceful, verdant backdrops to elegant residential interiors and vast balconies. The interior design of the individual units are refined towards minimalism and luxury. With an open flow-through floor plan, each residence will showcase 12-foot ceilings and 12-foot floor-to-ceiling windows — first among Florida developments — and spacious outdoor terraces with wraparound balconies that create a continuous indoor/outdoor living environment. Raymond Jungles, the landscape architect renowned for his creative and ecologically sensitive landscape architecture, captures the natural beauty of the neighborhood and magnifies it with ample green spaces. The two glass towers in a pas de deux appear to float over Raymond Jungles’ lush, canopied oasis, beckoning to Biscayne Bay and beyond.

Miami Children’s Chorus takes stand against childhood hunger BY LEE STEPHENS

The Miami Children’s Chorus, a Coral Gables non-profit choral music education and performance organization, is taking a stand and making a difference in the lives of hundreds of South Florida children. On Thursday, Mar. 20, MCC artistic administrator Analy Mendez and MCC advanced chorister Gabriela HernandezFumero delivered close to 1,000 cans of non-perishable food, 200 toiletries, kids clothes and baby clothes to the Leadership Learning Center at St. John Bosco — an after school program that provides homework assistance, literacy, social skills, fitness, and creative arts programs to the children of the east Little Havana community. Donated items were collected by all 150plus members of the Miami Children’s Chorus throughout the month of March. MCC began its work with the Leadership Learning Center in January through its “We Will Sing” choral outreach project, through which the organization provides a free six-week choral experience program in low-income/underserved communities. The We Will Sing program helps children find their voices as they explore how

to warm-up, read music, and most importantly how to work together to achieve a common goal. We Will Sing also introduces concepts of respect, communication, commitment, leadership, discipline, and

professionalism. In addition, We Will Sing serves as a mentoring program, as MCC choristers volunteer their time to work with the children in rehearsals and serve as positive role models for them.

After working with the children at Leadership Learning Center through the We Will Sing program, MCC advanced chorister, Gabriela Hernandez-Fumero decided she would find a way to make an even bigger impact in the lives of these and other Little Havana children. She started the Be The Change food/toiletires drive. The MCC invites the Miami-Dade County community to Be The Change and help the children in our communities who are most in need. Do you have your degree in health insurance? By Randye Karmin, MD, FACOG Every day patients ask me my opinion on what insurance company offers the best coverage? This is not a simple question to answer. Every company offers various kinds of plans. The factors to weigh when deciding which one to choose are the types of services covered and the costs. When I went to medical school, I never dreamed I would also need a degree in the art of underDr. Randye Karmin, standing health insurance. MD, FACOG Here is a crash course on the terminology that drives us all crazy when we visit the doctor. 1. Copay— Most people know what this is. Your copay is the amount of money you pay the doctor at the time of your visit. It is deducted from the amount the insurance company will eventually pay the physician. Usually, the copay is less for a primary care physician like an internist or family practitioner, and is more expensive for a visit to a specialist, often even your gynecologist. Occasionally, insurance plans will allow you

a preventative visit each year with 100% coverage, meaning you will not be responsible for a copay. 2. Deductible— Your deductible is the amount of money you need to pay toward health care expenses before the insurance company will contribute to or take over the remaining cost. Every plan differs in what services apply toward the deductible. Some require you to meet the deductible even for an office visit (ie. You do not have a “copay” only). Others only apply certain procedures, lab tests, radiographic studies, and non-preventative physician services. 3. Coinsurance—This one is tricky. Patients often confuse “coinsurance” and “copay.” Your coinsurance is a percentage of the allowable fees for medical services that you are responsible for. It is not a set amount like a copay. It depends on the services performed and is calculated based on the amount of money the insurance company has agreed to pay the doctor for a particular service based on the provider’s contract with that company. Often a patient needs to meet their deductible before “coinsurance” applies. For example, once the deductible is met, for a patient who has a plan where there is a 20% coinsurance responsibility, the insurance company would pay 80% of the balance after the deductible has been met, and the patient would be responsible for the remaining 20%. 4. Premium—Your premium is the amount of money you pay, usually monthly, for the health insurance plan.

Usually this number is lower if you agree to a higher deductible or coinsurance, taking a chance that you may not need many medical services. Higher premiums apply if you want to ensure lower out of pocket costs for the services themselves. Often employers will contribute to a portion of your premium and many times, the premium can be deducted from your paycheck before taxes. While most offices do their best to verify a patient’s benefits so that there are no surprises, it is ultimately the patient’s responsibility to be informed about coverage. Do NOT take the word of an insurance agent when it comes to purchasing individual plans. Make sure you do your due diligence to read the documents carefully and ensure that your coverage meets your needs. Finally, stay away from the hospital as much as possible. Any diagnostic testing or procedures that can be offered in the doctor’s office or a free-standing facility will almost always cost you less than at a hospital. Take advantage of Health Savings and Flexible Spending accounts that may be offered by your employers; these allow you to use pre-tax dollars to help you pay for prescriptions and out of pocket costs like copays, deductibles, and coinsurance. It’s complicated! Ask questions and be informed! Dr. Karmin is a Board Certified Ob/Gyn in private practice in Miami, Florida. 2013 Infiniti JX is a family vehicle with a lot to offer Grant Miller CAR CORNER If you’re looking for an excellent family vehicle, then the 2013 Infiniti JX is just the ticket! There are a lot of features that will please drivers with families, and I especially like the second row seat that slides forward to allow easy access to the third row, even with a child seat installed. And, with the second row pushed all the way back, there is an amazing amount of leg room available. On the road, the kids will be continuously entertained in the rear seats watching dual seven-inch DVD screens built into the front seatbacks. And third-row passengers also have their own air vents to cool off with during hot summer months. The innovative seven-passenger JX is a luxury crossover that’s been designed to excel in areas that buyers want most — interior flexibility and roominess, safety and advanced hospitality features. With a long wheelbase and short overhangs — as well as a low roofline that doesn’t compromise interior headroom — the platform provides the

benefits of a large family passenger vehicle without the usual exterior styling restrictions. The aerodynamic shape of the new JX not only enhances fuel economy, but also adds to the styling. A front underbody spoiler, integrated rear spoiler and rear tire deflectors contribute to the zero front and rear lift for enhanced road holding. Combining modern design with a touch of warmth, the JX exterior is highlighted by the double-arch front grille and headlight shape, double-wave hood, crescent-cut D-pillar and greenhouse design. Automatic on/off High Intensity Discharge (HID) bi-functional xenon headlights with manual levelizers are standard, along with fog lights. Former Bank Lawyer Fights for Miami Homeowners By Ann Lino Should I pay the mortgage on my home? What about the taxes and condo fees? What’s the worst that can happen if I don’t pay? What’s the best I can hope for? There are so many people offering advice. Realtors will tell you to sell. Bankruptcy attorneys will tell you to go bankrupt. Loan modification services will tell you to ask nicely for a loan modification. One attorney who spent years representing banks in foreclosures, Bruce Jacobs, will tell you to negotiate from strength. Bruce Jacobs is not only a former bank lawyer, he is also a foreclosure defense client. “I didn’t want to go bankrupt or spend the rest of my life paying for this mortgage mess,” said Bruce. “I had five mortgages on two properties underwater by almost $500,000.00. I stopped paying and put up a fight. Now, I have one property with one mortgage.” There are plenty of reasons to fight. Banks got a bailout of $7.7 Trillion in almost interest free loans from our taxpayer dollars. They pay out billions in bonuses to Wall Street executives while Main Street is left to fight for themselves. The loan modification programs are not working. Homeowners run in circles before getting denied or offered a deal that only helps the bank make more money. Bruce is part of a national group of dedicated lawyers fighting back against banks. They train at seminars around the country and online to share resources and develop cutting edge strategies in foreclosure defense. Many of the attorneys are former bank lawyers who, like Bruce, are passionate about fighting for meaningful help for their clients. Bruce has lectured on foreclosure defense at continuing legal education seminars for other attorneys and realtor offices so more homeowners have access to his strategies. “The goal is either a meaningful loan modification with a principal balance reduction, a release from the debt, or to fight to clear the mortgage off the property,” said Bruce about most of his clients. “There are reasons banks filed ‘robo-signed’ fraudulent documents in foreclosures all over the country. Many have serious paperwork problems which makes proving the right to foreclose in a courtroom difficult.”

To schedule a free consultation with Bruce Jacobs at his downtown Miami office please call (855) BANK-LIE (226-5543) or watch their free webinar: “Strategies for an Underwater Mortgage” at www.negotiatefromstrength.com. “Not paying your mortgage is only a strategic default if you have a strategy.”
