County’s new ‘Turtle Truck’ in time for nesting season BY LAURA PHILLIPS

M

ay is the official start of sea turtle nesting season and an active one in Miami-Dade County. The MiamiDade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department has announced that its Sea Turtle Conservation Program has successfully documented more than 6,886 sea turtle nests and released more than 585,000 live hatchlings to the sea, since it started the program in 1980. The program can look forward to delivering thousands more to the sea, thanks to a $13,500 Challenge Grant from the Andrew Sabin Family Foundation that helped pay for a new “Turtle Truck.” The new “Turtle Truck” will patrol Miami-Dade County beaches — including Crandon Park Beach and Haulover Park Beach — from sun-up to sun-down, seven days a week, now through the end of the sea turtle nesting season (Oct. 31). The Challenge Grant funds have allowed the Miami-Dade Sea Turtle Conservation Program, a program of the Miami-Dade County Parks Eco Adventures enterprise, to replace a rusted and failing pickup truck that it had been using for its turtle patrol runs, with a new 4x4 model that is better suited for beach terrain. The new truck is equipped with a custom topper to keep injured or sick sea turtles stable during transport. The public is invited to join Miami-Dade Parks’ “Turtle Rangers” as they release hatchlings to the sea every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 8:30 to 10 p.m., at the Crandon Park Visitor and Nature Center, 6767 Crandon Blvd., Key Biscayne, and at Haulover Park, 10800 Collins Ave. The cost to participate is $10 per person and serves as a donation to Miami-Dade County’s Sea Turtle Fund. Advance reservations are required. Call 305-361-6767, ext. 121. “Generous donations like this help us to carry out our mission to protect and preserve the threatened and endangered sea turtles on our beaches,” said Miami-Dade County

iami-Dade County is partnering with the American Cancer Society as it looks to local residents to help finish the fight against cancer by reaching full enrollment in a historic research study. Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3) will give scientists a better understanding of cancer causes and prevention. The Society is looking for local men and women between the ages of 30 and 65 from various racial/ethnic backgrounds with no personal history of cancer to help reach full enrollment of at least 300,000 people. “By joining this study, people can literally help save lives, giving future generations more time with families and friends,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez. “As the American Cancer Society celebrates its 100th birthday in 2013, I can think of no more valuable contribution to the cancer fight.” Signing up requires a one-time inperson visit to read and sign a consent form, complete a survey, have your waist measured, and give a small nonfasting blood sample like what you’d do during a routine doctor visit. Participants also will complete a more detailed survey at home and will continue to receive periodic follow-up surveys in the future that researchers will use to look for more clues to cancer’s causes. “Many individuals diagnosed with cancer struggle to answer the question,

‘What caused my cancer?’ In many cases, we don’t know the answer,” said Alpa V. in a nest, and average between two and eight nests a season. Because hatchlings are small and the egg chambers are deep, it is almost impossible for a single hatchling to escape from the chamber alone. As hatchlings break free from their shell inside the egg chamber, they stimulate other hatchlings to emerge from their eggs too. Once most hatchlings have emerged from their shells, they climb on top of the discarded eggshells to propel themselves to the top of the chamber. The hatchlings near the top of the egg chamber scratch down sand from above and around them. They emerge either en masse or in small groups. Emerging together increases the chance of survival as many hatchlings can overwhelm would-be predators. A single hatchling would be an easy target. A sea turtle nest will take 55 to 60 days to unfold baby sea turtles, known as hatchlings. The first nest is historically in mid-May. June and July are very high nesting months and known as the Peak Nesting Time. Nesting will continue until mid-September. The last baby turtles will leave about the end of October. Camillus House honored seven black churches in Miami with a celebration on Thursday, May 9. Honored churches were St. Agnes Episcopal Church, Historical Mount Zion, Brothers of the Good Shepherd, Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Mt. Tabor Baptist Church, Greater Bethel AME (first incorporated black church in Miami) and United House of Prayer for All People. Event speakers included Camillus House director and annual Black History Cultural Committee chair Crystal Conner and Camillus House president and CEO Paul Ahr, PhD. Last year’s inaugural event recognized the role of black women in transmitting black culture. This year, more than 100 attended to celebrate the importance of the black church. Next year’s celebration will focus on teachers. Camillus House recognizes the importance of hosting events so the community can come in its doors and see the good

things happening on its campus. Ninety percent of Camillus House’s clients are African American. Each year Camillus House will celebrate key influencers within the African American community. The goals of Miami’s black churches and Camillus House are common: everyone deserves a chance to live a good life. Camillus House is “of Overtown” and not “in Overtown.” This event is symbolic of Camillus House’s overall mission . It does much more than offer a free meal, medical care, a shower, or drug treatment. Camillus House offers a second chance to the desperate, the lonely, and the ones society has left behind. Many of the clients who come to Camillus House have nowhere else to go. They have no friends, no family and no loved ones to help them. Camillus House becomes their family, giving them the hope and support they need to begin the long, difficult transition to a new life and selfsufficiency. RocDoc entertains students at Friends of Education breakfast Gloria Burns GLORIA’S GAB The RocDoc provided top students from nine area public and independent schools being honored recently at the Coral Gables Friends of Education annual recognition breakfast with a real treat. Dr. Stephen Eskin, a gastroenterologist by day, also is a supremely accomplished professional musician who composes and performs with a focus on using his music to educate while having fun through his non-profit RocDoc organization. Students at the May 8 Junior/Senior Recognition Breakfast at the Westin Colonnade were entertained thoroughly by Dr. Eskin who donated his time and talent to educate and entertain a very appreciative audience. After speaking to the students about pursuing their passion, even when it does not necessarily seem to gel with their chosen career, he played guitar and sang with his digital band as backup.

On May 2, there was a similar recognition breakfast also at the Westin. That breakfast for elementary school graduates featured a few numbers from Excellent Conquest. The cast roller blades and all performed beautifully to this show with music and lyrics by Actors’ Playhouse Musical Theatre for Young Audiences Children’s Theatre’s Earl Maulding, who directs the show, and Scott Morlock. These annual recognition events are coordinated by Joan Reitsma, owner of The Giving Tree; presented by MiamiDade Chapter-Thrivent Financial; hosted by the Westin Colonnade, and sponsored by the GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club, Claire Frances Whitehurst, Gulliver Schools, the Rotary Club of Coral Gables, and the Education Foundation of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce. By the way, registration is open for the many theater camp programs offered by Actors’ Playhouse. For information, call 305-444-9293, ext. 621, or visit online at <www.actorsplayhouse.org>. Orphans. This is an organization that supports a network of nine homes of Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos (NPH, Spanish for Our Little Brothers and Sisters) and their outreach programs in Latin America and the Caribbean, which currently care for 3,700 children. Since they started in 1954, they have helped raise and educate approximately 16,000 children. This luncheon is the beginning of an effort to bring about awareness of their efforts to the philanthropic community of South Florida an raise money to continue their amazing work. The program included words from the CEO of the organization, Frank Donahue, and a video presentation featuring words from grateful children. On hand for the luncheon were two men who themselves were taken in at age 5 and, after graduating from college, came back to mentor and help manage the programs. Among the many locals filling a table for this affair was Lynn Bauer of Bauer Financial. Bauer, who worked with Rod Hildebrand and Matthew Meehan to

build a home for Sunil’s Home Orphanage in India, certainly identified with the incredible people who have committed their time, talent and financial resources to this charitable work. Thus, Bauer was extremely pleased that the NPH leaders were willing to meet and share their vast experience during a meeting later that same week at Season’s 52. Rafael Bermudez Gutierrez, national director from Mexico; Kristina Fueyo, regional director for Child Sponsorship; Tomas Hauff of Paramount Planning Group, a board member, and Alfredo Benitez, NPH country liaison, Friends of the Orphans SE Region, were among those at that get-together to discuss best practices. For more information on NPH, visit <www.friendsoftheorphans.org>. Until next time, keep making each day count. Women’s Fund celebrates 20 years at annual Power of the Purse event

BY JODIE KNOFSKY

Thanks to the support of 1,000 Women’s Fund friends, partners, donors, volunteers and staff members, the annual Power of the Purse luncheon raised more than $325,000 for the women and girls of Miami-Dade. The event, a celebration of 20 years of service to the community, took place on Apr. 19 at Jungle Island. One of the many highlights of the day was the introduction of the 24 members of the inaugural Honor Roll — extraordinary women whose unique contributions have made the mission real through their very tangible actions. Each woman was presented with a special commemorative bracelet as they were introduced by luncheon cochairs Judy Chorlog, Aletha Player and Kristin Francisco. Chair Marj Adler and new executive director Marilyn March were onstage for this memorable presentation. Board treasurer Faye Wright delivered passionate and heartfelt remarks, reminding all that the Women’s Fund work was not yet done. CBS4 News anchor Shannon Hori was emcee for the event and provided both lively and thoughtful insights throughout the afternoon. Guests were inspired by a special tribute video and moved by presentations by two of the many thousands of women whose lives have been changed by the Women’s Fund. Their remarks were followed by a standing ovation as many were moved to tears by the stories of personal triumph. Speakers included Rebecca Francisque, a high school student and part of the Thelma Gibson Health Initiative’s Coconut Grove Girls’ Group, and Eve Hansen, a graduate of the LEAP program. The Women’s Fund of Miami-Dade Honor Roll 2013 members are: Sophie Brion, Women’s Fund’s advocacy director 2004-09; Ann Bussel, community activist, philanthropist and long-time Women’s Fund supporter; Deborah Bussel, philanthropist, consultant, and advocate. Chapman Partnership participates in second annual PhilanthroFest BY ALEC ROSEN

Chapman Partnership joined the second annual PhilanthroFest on Saturday, Apr. 6, at Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami, to tell the community about how it helps the homeless have better lives. “PhilanthroFest has been a wonderful outlet for Chapman Partnership,” said H. Daniel Vincent, president and CEO. “The event gives us free, positive exposure and the opportunity to meet people in our community who might otherwise not know about the work that Chapman Partnership does for the homeless in Miami-Dade County.” PhilanthroFest sets the stage to give residents the opportunity to learn about nonprofit organizations and other community resources in a family-friendly atmosphere while enjoying music, art, performances, food trucks and other fun activities. PhilanthroFest provided free exhibition space to Chapman Partnership and other nonprofit organizations to promote their mission and connect with the local community. “At our booth we met with many

people interested in volunteering at our two centers, young professionals interested in nextgen, students looking for engaging social action activities, women looking to make a difference by joining Womenade and general inquiries about Chapman,” Vincent said. “A former resident stopped by to personally thank everyone at Chapman Partnership for helping her and her family in their time of need,” said Holly Woodbury, vice president of development. “That’s all the reward we need. Every success story makes the work Chapman Partnership does for the community worth it.” Chapman Partnership operates two Homeless Assistance Centers with 800 beds located in Miami and Homestead. It helps the homeless by providing a comprehensive support program that includes emergency shelter, meals, health, dental and psychiatric care, day care, job training, job placement and assistance with securing stable housing. Over 150 pet ‘recruits’ available for adoption BY XIOMARAMORDCOVICH

Miami-Dade County Animal Services Department, in collaboration with the Miami Marlins Ayudan Team The Voice, will be celebrating the third pet adoption event, Marlins Adopt-O-Mania, on Sunday, June 2, at Marlins Park, 501 Marlins Way (NW 16th Avenue), from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., along with the Humane Society of Greater Miami and The Cat Network. “We are extending an invitation to the community to celebrate a day of family fun, sports, festivities, pet adoptions, sterilization and vaccinations” said Alex Muñoz, director of Miami-Dade County Animal Services Department. As an added feature, Animal Services will provide spay/neuter surgeries for dogs under 50 pounds at no cost to the residents of surrounding communities and The Cat Network will offer free sterilization for cats. Dog and cat booster vaccines will be offered free of charge. Rabies vaccinations

and microchips will be provided for $10 each (low cost rabies applicable for qualifying pet owners). Licenses will be available to purchase onsite. Vaccinations are essential in protecting the health of pets and microchips provide permanent lifetime identification, which is invaluable should a pet become lost. In order to spay/neuter your dog at the event, an appointment must be scheduled by calling 3-1-1. For cat spay/neuter appointments, contact The Cat Network at 305-233-9958 or by email at <meowmobile@thecatnetwork.org>. Each year, Miami Dade County Animal Services Department receives over 30,000 pets. The goal of this event, as with any event in which the department participates, is to increase pet adoptions, sterilizations, vaccinations and community awareness and involvement with the shelter. For more information, visit online at <www.miamidade.gov/animals> or call 3-1-1.

Collage artist Erika King tells Miami Heat’s story on canvas BY REBECCA SHARP

From having her art celebrated on the floor of the AmericanAirlines Arena during a Miami Heat game to shaking hands with presidents, Erika King creates classic South Florida treasures. Originally from Philadelphia and educated in Europe, King conjures collage creations that document and embrace life on her vast canvases of “still videos.” “I’m just really happy doing it and creating the pieces I’m creating,” King said from her Coconut Grove-based studio. Photos of the famous — like President Bill Clinton, Gloria Estefan, and world championship racecar driver Emerson Fittipaldi — adorn the creative space. “It is an honor to be in the flow of having calls come in from people who are interested and have connection with the work somehow.” Today her flow of work often centers on local and national athletic legends. Two-time NBA champions, the Miami Heat, have worked with Erika for 15 years on her unique larger-than-life pieces. It all started in 1998 for the first annual Heat Family Festival, the team’s charity event. “The artists were invited to create for the

benefit at Marty Margulies’ Grand Bay Towers on Key Biscayne,” King said. “I took my easel, paints and collage images, and was painting away when Pat Riley came over.” The well-known Miami Heat president and former coach loved the work and a unique relationship began whereby the artist became exclusively commissioned to tell the Heat’s story through her distinctive trademark collages. Retirement celebration pieces for stars like Alonzo Mourning, Tim Hardaway, the 2006 and 2012 NBA Championship collages, and the two pieces she currently is working on for Heat owner Micky Arison and team president Riley’s corporate offices keep her busy. Sports themes have been a part of Erika’s work going back to a collage she did for the Miami Dolphins in the 1970s. The action and energy of the visuals inspire her to create these dynamic — often four- by six-foot pieces and larger — representing a visual symphony of motion and expression. Beyond the sports, works for the Miami Centennial Celebration, 75th Anniversary of the University of Miami, and commemorative pieces for Miami City Ballet, Blockbuster Video, United Way, and Estefan

Artist Tracy Ellyn’s project uses art for healing purpose BY GARY ALAN RUSE

Miami artist and educator Tracy Ellyn has been using her skills and knowledge of art in an unexpected way with a program called the Zen Tov Project. Its purpose is healing. “I started the project about 20 years ago while contemplating Picasso’s quote, ‘The meaning of life is to find your gift; the purpose of life is to give it away’,” Ellyn said. “I had just enjoyed two decades of a fashion design career in New York and Europe, and it was time to share this gift, which was so freely given to me by the universe, with the next generation. In particular, I was interested in giving to those of talent or need who would otherwise not have such an opportunity.” Having met Mark Knobel, president of The Life Quest Foundation, she joined forces with him to create the Zen Tov Project, which is the therapeutic arts branch of Life Quest. Life Quest advocates for individuals with a variety of impediments who are unable to navigate the maze of social services. “My goal is to help people use the creative process to heal, improve their well-being and overcome their circumstances, whether physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, financial, familial, bereavement, or any other life-related circumstances,” she said. “The creative process is healing and life-enhancing, whether due to an inner state or an outer catastrophic event. We want to provide cathartic expression, as well as talent-related opportunities that could provide once-in-alifetime opportunities to fulfill their gift and/or move out

of their circumstances.” In the past she has through her project provided such things as art and school supplies to Haitian orphanages after the earthquake, art classes and art therapy consultations for special needs youth and adults, art scholarships for Miami’s magnet art students of talent who could not afford their class museum trips, and tickets to special performing art events to children and teens that were challenged physically, mentally or financially. She has used art projects to help adolescent teens in substance abuse rehabilitation programs and various support groups, anti-bullying groups, and by donating gallery art pieces as fundraising for non-profit organizations. She also has done murals for in-need institutions that wish to promote their important work or enhance their environment. “I will soon be doing projects with the Children’s Bereavement Center, helping youngsters express their grief through the creation of emotion sculptures and art journaling,” Ellyn said. “The goal of the Miami-based CBC is to enable children and families to acknowledge change and integrate loss with healthful grief and mourning. Later in the year, I plan to do artwork with foster children and teens in the areas of self-esteem and transitioning to adult life.” For information search the Zen Tov Project on Google+ where a blog and inspiring photos and videos can be found. “We are grateful to be able to continue to provide artsrelated services and experiences that can help transform lives both locally and around the world,” she said.

Sports-oriented charter schools to open next to Marlins Park BY LAURA ACKER

Academica, one of the nation’s leading charter school service and support organizations, has announced that Sports Leadership and Management Charter Middle and High School (SLAM) — a specialized MiamiDade County public school featuring a sports-directed curriculum — will be expanding to a new location for the 2013 academic year. The innovative school also will have new neighbors, the Miami Marlins. The newest addition to the Mater Academy network of high-performing charter schools, SLAM currently is operating at a smaller capacity within Mater Academy East Charter High School, at 998 SW First St. However, come August, the school will open within a state-of-the-art, seven-story facility overlooking Marlins Park, located at NW 12th Avenue and Sixth Street. The school, which currently is under construction, will feature a 500-seat gym and is poised to compete in a wide variety of sports as the “Titans.” “It is a privilege for those of us at Academica to be working with SLAM,” said Fernando Zulueta, founder and president of Academica. “We are thrilled to take this next step in the school’s evolution and are confident that its new location will provide outstanding opportunities to the students we serve.” With a capacity of 980 students, the school now is enrolling students, in grades 6-12, who are interested in pursuing sports-related professions. SLAM students choose a program focus from three academies — Sports Management and Marketing, Broadcasting and Communications, and Medicine and Health Sciences — and are exposed to various career fields within their area of interest. Tailored curriculums prepare young minds for futures in:

• Athletic training; • Media and public relations; • Physical therapy, and • Sports-related advertising, agent representation, business management, medicine, entertainment marketing, journalism, psychology, and nutrition. SLAM students are encouraged to participate in community service initiatives associated with their concentration. Additionally, the school aims to provide students with ongoing opportunities to intern with local athletic teams and professionals within the sports arena. “SLAM is off to an amazing start and will only continue to gain momentum at its new home,” added Alex Tamargo, principal of Sports Leadership and Management Charter Middle and High School. “Featuring a oneof-a-kind curriculum and unmatched experiences, the school will serve as a catalyst for other Sports Leadership and Management Charter Schools throughout the nation. I am honored to be tasked with heading the SLAM team into its bright future.” As a charter school management company, Academica serves in a similar capacity to a school district’s staff and board’s role in managing a traditional public school. The Florida-based organization has a proven track record of developing and growing networks of successful charter schools throughout the U.S. and currently serves the largest population of high-performing charter schools in the state of Florida. Academica’s strategic formula of establishing schools in areas of great need has made them an instrumental resource in accelerating student and school performance nationwide for the past decade. Interested parents should call 305-3246963 or visit the SLAM website at <www.slammiami.com> to register or for more information.

Arboleya to receive Scouting’s top national award for adults BY JESSICA DROUET

The National Court of Honor of the Boy Scouts of America will recognize Carlos Arboleya’s 53 years of adult service with the BSA’s oldest and highest commendation for extraordinary and truly noteworthy service of a national character to Scouting and the youth of America — the Silver Buffalo Award. One of South Florida’s most recognized businessmen, Arboleya’s success story is that of the American dream. After arriving in Miami in 1959 from Cuba, he rose from an inventory clerk to vice president at a shoe factory. He then reentered banking, the industry in which he worked in Cuba. In a short time, Arboleya made a name for himself. He continuously used the recognition to support the community and his true passion, working for the advancement and guidance of local youth. It is this passion that has led to Arboleya’s participation in the Boy Scouts of America. The success of Hispanic Scouting in South Florida is attributed largely to Arboleya’s leadership, commitment and effort, both personally and financially. He recruited and trained the manpower to lead and organize troops in Miami’s Hispanic community. He is the founder of the Lincoln-Marti Boy and Girl Scout Camporee, held at the Carlos J. Arboleya Camping and Picnic Grounds in Miami for the past 43 years, which is attended by approximately 3,500 Scouts annually. Arboleya is a recipient of numerous Scouting awards, including the Silver Beaver Award on the council level, the Silver Antelope Award on the regional basis, the Vale la Pena (It Is Worthwhile) national award, the St. George Award from the National Catholic Committee on Scouting and the Cuban Silver Fleur-de-

Beth David Congregation members celebrate Torah restoration event

Torah literally means teaching. A Torah scroll contains The Five Books of Moses, which lays out the overall body of Jewish religious teachings encompassing the whole body of Jewish law, practice and tradition. The Beth David scroll celebrated during a Torah restoration event on Apr. 14 was rescued by Barbara Lefcourt from a collection of 1,564 Torah scrolls confiscated from synagogues in Europe by Nazis during the Holocaust. In ancient times, the ink used for writing a Torah was obtained by boiling oils, tar and wax, and collecting the vapors. The mixture would be combined with tree sap and honey, then dried and stored. Before its use, it would be mixed with gall-nut juice. Nowadays, scribes prepare ink using gall-nut juice and gum. Black is the only

color acceptable for writing a Torah and the black color is achieved by adding various tints. Most Torahs today have 42 lines per column, however, the Beth David scroll has 57 lines per column and is nearly 5-6 inches taller than most scrolls today. It is lighter in weight than most of its size, due to the fine, thin gauge of the parchment. A Torah may be written only on parchment from the skin of a kosher animal and must be prepared with the intention that it be used for a Torah. The scribe writes with a feather pen or reed pen, filling its tip from the ink. Iron and steel nib pens are not proper for two reasons: 1. They may puncture the parchment. 2. Iron and steel are often used to make weapons of death and destruction, both of which oppose the intent of the Torah. For more information about future Torah restoration events at Beth David Congregation, call 305-854-3911.

Miami Dade College recognized for its commitment to diversity BY ROXANA ROMERO

Miami Dade College (MDC) is no stranger to prestigious honors. It is ranked among the top colleges in the U.S., with a commitment to quality, diversity, innovation and best practices. The latest honor comes from American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) which conferred upon MDC its Advancing Diversity Award for its significant contributions — over a sustained period of time — to advancing diversity in community college leadership, the community, and within higher education as a whole. The first award of its kind, it recognizes MDC’s ongoing dedication to social equity for all students and personnel; reflects the diversity of its community and student population; models innovative and progressive practices that support institutional diversity, and maintains and advocates for policies that support diversity at local, state, and national levels. Under the leadership of Dr. Eduardo J. Padrón, MDC’s president, the college has graduated more Hispanics and

African-Americans than any other college in the country. MDC students represent 185 countries and speak 94 languages; in terms of its full-time workforce, 75 percent of administrators, 63 percent of faculty, and 88 percent of staff are minorities. “This recognition is truly on behalf of everyone who is part of what we call ‘Democracy’s College.’ Diversity is a cornerstone in everything we do. At MDC, we have proven that diversity, open access and quality can go hand in hand,” Dr. Padrón said. The awards ceremony took place on Apr. 23 during the AACC’s 93rd annual convention in San Francisco. The AACC established the Awards of Excellence to align with key recommendations of the 21st Century Commission on the Future of Community Colleges, a blueribbon group that issued its findings last spring. Its mission is to elevate community colleges that are at the vanguard of progressive practices. Finalists for the AACC Awards of Excellence were chosen by a specially appointed committee of the AACC board of directors.

CHI receives $1.9M federal grant to expand its healthcare services BY TIFFANI HELBERG

Community Health of South Florida Inc. (CHI) recently received a $1.9 million federal grant to provide healthcare services to some of the most needy and under-served people in Coconut Grove and South Miami. Out of several bids, the Health Resources and Services Administration choose CHI as the provider of choice to bring primary medical care and a host of other services to that area. This is just one of three new centers to open in the next four months. The new Coconut Grove, South Miami and Kendall centers will bring CHI’s services farther North into areas previously not serviced by the non-profit company. The majority of CHI’s seven current healthcare centers are farther south, primarily in the South MiamiDade area. “We welcome the opportunity to move into that area,” said Colonel Brodes Hartley Jr., president and CEO of CHI. “Coconut Grove, South Miami and Kendall are areas with tremendous need and we will be bringing in the same high level services there that CHI already has established farther south and in Marathon.”

The three centers will reach hundreds of thousands of people both lower and middle income to help fill the healthcare gap. Health services will be provided regardless of the person’s lack of insurance or ability to pay based on a sliding fee scale. Community Health of South Florida has been providing a variety of healthcare services to Miami-Dade and Monroe counties for more than 40 years. It will bring its same exemplary services to the three new centers including: primary care, ob-gyn, dental, pediatrics, behavioral health and more. Door-to door transportation for patients, pharmacy services and delivery also are part of the CHI one-stop shopping model for care. CHI is designated as a level 3 patient centered medical home. That’s the highest level of care designated by the National Committee for Quality Assurance. It is just one of many such awards and designations given to CHI for its commitment to putting patient care first at its state of the art healthcare centers. “I am tremendously proud of CHI and its progress,” Col. Hartley said. “We will continue to reduce barriers and increase access to good healthcare.”

Biscayne National Park seeks volunteers for public contact BY LEE STEPHENS

If you enjoy working with people and have a bit of free time, consider volunteering at Biscayne National Park’s Dante Fascell Visitor Center, located east of Homestead. Volunteers introduce visitors from around the world to the park and answer questions from an information desk overlooking beautiful Biscayne Bay. In addition to covering the information desk, public contact volunteers also rove the boardwalk at Convoy Point to provide park information, explain regulations and answer questions. Volunteers generally contribute four hours once or twice per week. They work side by side with park rangers, and enjoy training opportunities and excursions in the park. Heading into the summer, the park is tight on “people power” to keep the Dante Fascell Visitor Center open for park visitors.

“Volunteers give a warm welcome, provide information, make a lasting impression, are valued members of our team, and make the park a great place to visit,” said Biscayne National Park superintendent Brian Carlstrom. The park will provide volunteers with a uniform and training to prepare them for service as ambassadors to Biscayne National Park and the National Park Service. Additionally, summer is the slow season affording time to read up on the park’s unique ecosystems and colorful human history between groups of visitors. For more information or to apply, contact Christiana Admiral, Biscayne National Park chief of interpretation at 305-2301144, ext. 018, or visit the park’s website at <www.nps.gov/bisc> and select “support your park” from the menu on the left side of the page. For more information on Biscayne National Park, call 305-2307275, ext. 0 or visit the park’s website at <www.nps.gov/bisc>.

FORMER HUSBAND’S PETITION TO TERMINATE CHILD SUPPORT FOR ADULT CHILD AND TO RE-CALCULATE CHILD SUPPORT FOR YOUNGER CHILD COMES NOW the Petitioner/ Former Husband, CARLOS M. RIVERA, and petitions this Court to terminate his payment of child support to the Respondent/Former Wife, AZUCEL G. RIVERA, for the parties’ older child, M.R., based upon her having attained the age of legal majority, and also to re-calculate the child support for K.R., the parties’ remaining minor child, and states: The older child of the parties, M.R., attained 18, the age of legal majority, on March 5, 2012, a substantial change in circumstances justifying the termination of child support payments for her by the Former Husband. Former Husband has paid over fourteen (14) months of a child support obligation that should have terminated on March 5, 2012. Former Husband does not have any child support arrearages or owing retroactive support. WHEREFORE, Petitioner/ Former Husband respectfully moves this Court to enter an order terminating his payment of child support for M.R. based upon her legal majority, re-calculating the ongoing payment of support by him for the minor child, K.R., providing for

the cessation of child support income deductions for M.R. and also providing for the termination of Petitioner/Former Husband’s support obligations altogether without further order of the Court upon K.R. attaining the age of 18 on February 27, 2016.
