he Miami-Dade Cooperative Extension Division will be hosting a Rain Barrel Workshop during the Native Plant Day event on Saturday, Mar. 27, from 10 a.m. to noon, at Bill Sadowski Park, 17555 SW 79 Ave. in Palmetto Bay. Participants will learn how to conserve water and protect important natural resources from pollution. Many other programs and activities for the entire family are planned, including nature walks, plant and book sales and raffles. Barrels are used to capture rainwater for irrigating your garden or lawn. The barrels are made from 55-gallon refurbished food-grade drums, and they hold enough rainwater to cover a 240 square-foot garden space. To make sure a rain barrel is reserved for you, be sure to register in advance. The fee for the rain barrels is $45. Accepted forms of payment include personal checks or money orders made payable to the “Miami-Dade Extension Program Account.” To sign up for the workshops, contact Lize Luna at 305-248-3311, ext. 242. More information on water conservation programs, agriculture and urban horticulture, 4-H, Sea Grant and family and consumer sciences programs and publications is available on the MiamiDade Cooperative Extension website at <http://miami-dade.ifas.ufl.edu/>. Lt. Col. Thomas B. Davis, chief of public affairs for the 482nd Fighter Wing of Homestead Air Reserve Base, spoke about the base to the members of the Economic Development Council (EDC) of South Dade during its Mar. 9 meeting in Palmetto Bay. In his presentation, Davis first discussed the upcoming “Wings Over Homestead” air show, scheduled for Nov. 6-7. The air show, which had been discontinued for 17 years, returned in 2009 and drew an audience of 210,000 people for the two-day event. “Estimating an average family of four, that’s 52,500 families spending $40 per day for the event for gas, entertainment, food and alcohol,” Davis said. “That adds up to a gross revenue of $2.1 million for the area.” He said that show organizers believe the 2010 show will be an even bigger event attracting a larger crowd and bringing in close to $3 million. The precision aerobatics of the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels will headline an allstar list of performers at the Homestead Air Reserve Base for the show, for those who enjoy the roar of the jets and the beauty of the aerial maneuvers. Even without the air show, the base has proven to be a hedge against the recession for the area. “In this time of economic downturn, and this winter’s farming losses, the base is still pumping almost $140 million into the community,” Davis said. “In the future, we’re looking at getting an extra 150 people stationed at Homestead Air Reserve Base.

There’s no reason why we can’t have reservists fly those F-16’s in the daytime and have active duty pilots fly them at night.” The 482nd Fighter Wing is the lead group at the base, with 1,275 traditional reservists, 338 air reserve technicians, 249 civilian employees and 122 contractors. There are other tenants on the base, including the Coast Guard with 79 personnel, the Florida National Guard with 243 members, SOUTHCOM (United States Southern Command) with 250 people and U.S. Customs with a staff of 121. “The Florida National Guard has two F15’s there on alert 24 hours a day, and they’re ‘loaded for bear,’” Davis said. “They’re there to protect our South Florida skies against the threat of 9-11 style terrorism and any other dangers.” He also described the base’s important role in the recent Operation Unified Response to assist survivors of the earthquake in Haiti, moving 4 million pounds of cargo through the base, along with 350 tons of baggage and 4,577 passengers in the relief effort. Regarding the upcoming air show, which last year attracted sponsors such as Budweiser, city and county governments, TV and radio stations, local businesses and other organizations, Davis invited members of the EDC to look into becoming sponsors this year. Anyone interested may contact Alice Fields at 305-224-7077. “Even if you don’t sponsor, come on out — it’s going to be one fun day,” Davis told them. “You are welcome at Homestead Air Reserve Base. It is your base, and we’re proud to show it.”

PACETTI,

“As commissioner and on behalf of the mayor, the board of county commissioners and the residents of Miami-Dade County, I take great pleasure in presenting this certificate of appreciation to you in recognition of your valuable contributions to our community,” Sorenson said. The certificate was signed by Commissioners Sorenson and Dennis Moss, and Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez. Bill, whose full name is William A. Pacetti III, has been a Publix manager for 18 years and has been with the company for more than 38 years, being hired as a bag boy in 1971. Publix, through Publix Charities, is the prime sponsor of the July 4 Fireworks at Black Point Marina each year, one of the few remaining fireworks shows in MiamiDade County. That enables the PBSA and Commissioner Sorenson to provide the fireworks. Pacetti has been supporting many community events and organizations over the years, including fundraising for local Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, community baseball and football teams, Cutler Ridge Presbyterian Church, St. Faith’s Episcopal Church, the PTAs of Gulfstream Elementary, Whigham Elementary, Whispering Pines Elementary, Cutler Ridge Elementary, Richmond Middle, Centennial Middle, Coral Reef High School and the policing units of Cutler Bay and

Palmetto Bay. He is on the board of the Palmetto Bay Cultural Council, Pinecrest Police Department Citizen Oral Board and the Breakers Homeowner Association Board. Pacetti works with the March of Dimes Annual Walk, United Way and Feed the Hungry. “Bill, with the full support of Publix, has provided generously to many events in the community,” Meiklejohn said. “He has reached out to many needy individuals and organizations throughout the years at Thanksgiving and Christmas, and other times. Publix has a policy of giving back to the community and Bill is an excellent steward of this corporate program.” Pacetti’s family has been making a difference in South Florida for many years. His father, Dr. William A. Pacetti Jr., was a well-known pediatrician in the Miami area, and his mother, Rosa Wells Pacetti, RN, was a head nurse in the ICU at Jackson Memorial Hospital. His grandfather, William A. Pacetti Sr., was a Miami business entrepreneur who opened a pharmacy in downtown Miami that was known at the time as Byron’s Red Cross and later became Jackson Byron’s. Pacetti was married for 30 years to his first wife and high school sweetheart, Cynthia Carole Starling, whom he lost to breast cancer in 2003. In addition to his son, Tony, 30, Pacetti has two other sons, Joseph Robert Pacetti, 27, and William A. Pacetti IV, 17, and a step-son, Brandon Phillip Garcia, 15.

in our efforts to help those in need in Haiti and they overwhelmed us with their support,” said Richard King, president of the Rotary Club. The club members asked those shopping to purchase two pairs of flip-flops at the stores for only $5 via a special arrangement with the stores. And as the customers left they placed the donated shoes in containers at tables established by the club. In addition, many delivered bags of clothes and shoes, and some offered cash donations. The shoes, clothes and donations will be provided to Food for the Poor, which will distribute them to those in need in Haiti. “We were extremely pleased by the generosity of the community and how they responded to our requests for help for the unfortunate victims of the devastating earthquake,” said Ellie Mills, presidentelect of the Rotary Club. “Even though we are having tough

economic times ourselves, this proves that our community still cares,” King added. “We realized that without shoes, the victims would be at an even greater risk of further injury. Flip-flops are a staple here in Miami, so collecting them for those in need in Haiti did not seem too unusual,” said Francine Tegzes, club treasurer and organizer of the shoe drive. The Rotary Club of Perrine-Cutler Ridge-Palmetto Bay was chartered in 1960 by a group of individuals who came together to foster the ideal of service among the South Miami-Dade County business community. The club meets every Tuesday for lunch at Café Portofino in Palmetto Bay. For information, visit <www.pcrpbrotary.org> or contact Richard King, 200910 club president, at 305-235-8298.

now in Palmetto Bay and Cutler Bay, and isn’t that an encouraging sign in an age when books and reading in general seem to be on the decline. The alarming statistics in recent years: 80 percent of US families did not buy or read a book last year; 70 percent of US adults have not been in a bookstore in the last five years; 58 percent of the US adult population never reads another book after high school; 57 percent of new books are not read to completion; 42 percent of college graduates never read another book; most readers do not get past page 18 in a book they have purchased. Two-thirds of students who cannot read proficiently by the end of the 4th grade will end up in jail or on welfare. The fourth grade is the watershed year. Over 70 percent of inmates in America’s prisons cannot read above a fourth grade level. So it’s good news that the new Palmetto Bay

Everglades’ water is essential to South Florida’s existence R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY There is little scientific truth to the old saying “Man can live on bread and water alone.” But, try living without water. It cleanses our body; it cleans are clothes; it irrigates our farms. It is basic to our very existence. The source of Southeast Florida’s water is the Everglades. For years, the “River of Grass” has been under attack — first from the government which erroneously dug canals to drain it, to overzealous real estate developers building single-family home subdivisions, to farmers dumping fertilizers into the watershed, and to the community’s general neglect. Florida Gov. Charlie Christ, recognizing the need to purify the waters entering the Everglades, originally proposed and negotiated Florida’s largest land purchase for the acquisition of 181,000 acres of U.S. Sugar Corp’s farmland. The intent is to end sugarcane farming on the land, which

would result in greatly reducing the dumping of phosphorous fertilizers into the Everglades. The idea was conceived during the boom when money was available for any worthy, and sometimes unworthy, projects. The original cost of $1.34 billion has now been reduced to $536 million for the purchase of 72,000 acres of farm and grove land. Let’s step back for a moment and understand the logic behind the purchase. Water flows from the north, down through Lake Okeechobee, through the sugarcane farms into the Everglades. The fertilizers used by the farmers to grow the cane wash down with the flow of water where it contaminates the Everglades. Since the plans original conception, the scarcity of dollars in Tallahassee twice has caused a reduction in its original size and in cost. However, regardless of its downsizing, the concept is correct and the need for its implementation is ongoing. Objectors to the deal, from the very beginning, claim that it is a sweetheart deal for Gov. Crist and U.S. Sugar Corp. Sweetheart deal or not, the purchase is vital to the continued growth of our community and our ever-increasing demand for water. Florida Crystals Corp. and the

–– VIEWPOINT –– Miccosukee Tribe are urging the water management board to kill the deal by not extending the Mar. 31 deadline to complete the purchase. They claim that the agency’s own financial advisors and budget managers predict gushers of red ink and major cuts to existing projects — even without the $45 million in annual debt payments to finance the purchase. The tribe contends that the cost is so prohibitive that if the Water Management District proceeds with the purchase, it will be forced to eliminate or delay other planned Everglades’ restoration projects. Without exception, every environmental group in and outside of Florida endorses the purchase. The Everglades Coalition, made up of Florida’s largest environmental organizations, dismisses the claims that the purchase was designed to enrich U.S. Sugar and that the most critical lands are

not in the purchase. The tribe’s contention that the state doesn’t have the authority to proceed with the sale of bonds to finance the acquisition has been struck down by the courts. Now the only question remaining is will the spending of $536 million to buy the land possibly slow or eliminate other restoration projects. Inasmuch as we don’t have evidence that buying the U.S. Sugar land acquisition will end other projects, the state must continue with the purchase. Believe it, I really do get responses to my articles BY ERNIE SOCHIN

Councilmember As a well-recognized Cutler Bay journalist, I do get responses to my articles. Surprised? Read on. When I wrote about people using their cell phones/iPods etc. while seated at the dinner table, I got a lot of people agreeing with me, but I also got upbraided by my home-companion/warden who caught me playing with my recently downloaded free iPhone App — a drum set. I couldn’t resist practicing my drum solo at the dinner table and was properly chastised for doing it. I had to apologize. No one yet has sent me money for any of my get-rich schemes. I really don’t understand why. They are as sensible as any of the others that I read about. I’ll keep trying. Maybe I will begin treating Medicare clients for Arachnophobia and ice cream eating disorders. Stay tuned. When I wrote about students in high school and their pants hanging down I was reminded that someone had written a song called Pants on the Ground which is a big hit on You Tube. When I wrote about being cool a friendly councilman from an adjoining town told me he really likes his ponytail and that perhaps I should consider one. What do you think, folks? On my views on the War on Terror, I got a lot of response…mostly agreeing but some with differing views. They thought that the only way to keep us safe is to keep fighting. One of my more conservative friends suggested that killing all the Muslims was the only answer. Of course

they, the Muslims, might have the same view regarding non-Muslims and where would that lead us? I have a far-out thought on this that may rattle a few people since I am in a very small minority with these views. But what if — just say what if — we all, I mean everyone, really believed that this one precious life that we have is the only one that we get, and that there may not be some special place up in the sky where we all go after we die. What if people really believed that? Would they be so willing to offer their lives in sacrifice for their particular ideal or religion? Might they instead start thinking about their children and their children’s children and what kind of world we might be leaving to them? We already have seen how this eggshell of a planet can begin to crack and break and kill hundreds of thousands of people, how things like HCFC’s and carbon dioxide can create acid rain and leave a hole in our ozone layer, and now the latest news indicates that a giant meteorite may have wiped out the dinosaurs in one fell swoop. I think we have more to worry about in protecting our planet and hopefully generations to come than worry about how someone is praying and to which god. If there is a giant man in the sky as many believe, my guess is that he (or she) would be pretty angry at what is going on here on this eggshell planet and what things are being done in his/her name. Maybe all those “Pat Robertson” types are right about what might be happening to us, but for the wrong reasons, huh? Other articles of national importance can be viewed at Ernie’s website at <www.sochin.com>.

Dining at Main Moon Buffet, the attractive Chinese restaurant just off SW 184th Street in Cutler Bay, is more than an enjoyable experience. Hundreds of customers who return, time and time again, praise the excellence of its diversity of choices from among Chinese, American, Japanese and other Southeastern Asian cultures. Black Pepper Shrimp is one of the most popular items, notes Jimmy Wong who has managed the Main Moon restaurant for the Guo family for 10 years. “Folks keep asking for it when they return,â€? he added. Twin Flavors Shrimp features prawn with a hot and spicy ginger sauce paired with shrimp with a black bean sauce while Lake Tung Ting Shrimp combines snow crab meat with shrimp sautĂŠed with broccoli, mushroom and bamboo shoots in a delicious white wine sauce. Artistry in shrimp is just the start of the varied menu choices at Main Moon where the buffet (all you can eat) constantly changes selections with more than 60 items available daily from 180 or more featured each week. But what really opens the eyes of Oriental buffet-goers are the Main Moon’s subtle but significant details, such as: • Sparkling white china buffet serving dishes in three convenient serving bars eliminates crowding, even during busy restaurant hours. • Selection dishes are regularly filled with hot-from-the-kitchen specialties, including fish and shrimp delicacies that need to be just

minutes from the stove or wok. • Crab legs from Canada, mussels, oysters and other seafood gourmet-styled dishes, regular items rarely found in many buffets elsewhere. What also separates Main Moon from other buffets is an inviting interior from the lobby entry with a soothing waterfall-styled glass panel to the dark green carpet piling, spotlessly clean tables and chairs, and gleaming gold fixture accents. That creates the distinct feeling of “classâ€? throughout Main Moon, reflecting the pride of its owners, management and friendly waiting staff who greet you with a cordial, welcoming smile, instantly making you feel at home. The spacious interior accommodates group parties or celebrations in separated privacy with a special menu prepared in advance. Outside events also are catered and a complete takeout service is available. Whether the Singapore rice noodles or Hawaiian Five Oh, a South Pacific specialty, superbly cooked and served fare at nominal pricing has kept Main Moon the “main placeâ€? for gourmet Chinese and Asian-styled dining in south Miami-Dade. There will be squids for kids at Deering Seafood Festival BY SHEILA STIEGLITZ

The Deering Seafood Festival on the Bay has become one of the community’s most anticipated annual events, not only for offering Florida’s freshest fish and seafood, but also because each year the Deering Estate at Cutler creates something unique that debuts at the event. The valet bike service initiated a few years ago continues to encourage festival goers to go green and cycle to the historic estate, and last year the introduction of the Marine Mobile on Wheels allows children a hands-on opportunity to learn about the local ecosystem, food chain, environment and habitat of the specimens. For this year’s festival on Sunday, Mar. 28, Deering Estate marine biologists braved the myths about the deep dark waters of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea fame, and are presenting the legendary sea creature — the squid. Found in waters all over the world, these cephalopods (animals with heads and feet) are not on the list of endangered species. Under the guidance of the educational and interpretative specialists at the Deering Estate at Cutler, boys and girls who are age 8 and older, have the opportunity to join the Squid Squad to dissect a squid and learn about all its different parts. Yoelly Burgos, staff member and trained marine biologist, explained that the squid produces ink that it cleverly uses for defense against predators. “Kids love this type of activity,” she said. “Through the dissection the kids will find the ink sac and then using a ‘pen’ — a part of the squid’s anatomy that acts like a back bone — they can write with the squid’s ink.” A few weeks ago, in preparation for the event, some of the Deering Estate Foundation board members courageously volunteered to try their hand at dissection.

Mary Pettit, director of the Deering Estate Foundation, displays a squid. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Carefully following Burgos detailed instructions all in the group were able to dissect the entire squid and successfully

locate the ink sac and the two hearts. “These activities provide just a mere glimpse in to the fun and interactive educa-

tional components that are part of the award winning programs that the estate delivers to students and campers everyday throughout the year,” said Mary Pettit, director of the Deering Estate Foundation. “We are delighted to showcase them at the Seafood Festival each year to raise public awareness. Not only is there the most delicious seafood, entertainment and much to see and do for the entire family at the festival, one also goes away having learned a little more about our South Florida environment, native habitats and biodiversity.” Dissection may not be for everyone, so there still is plenty to do at the upcoming Seafood festival. Top local restaurants, caterers and seafood markets prepare a dazzling array of the freshest catch. Steel drums, on-going musical entertainment, and costumed Bahamian Junkanoo dancers create a magical island celebration. Under the big top tent there are cooking demos with South Florida celebrity chefs: Clay Conley (Azul); Sean Bernal (Oceanaire); Damian Gilchrist (Ocean Reef Club), and Michael Bennett (Bimini Boatyard), and include food samples and wine tastings. Some of the other activities include an Artists’ Village, pontoon boat rides to Chicken Key; nature hikes and tours of the historic homes. The Deering Estate at Cutler, a MiamiDade County Park, is located on 444-acres at 16701 SW 72 Ave. Admission tickets include park entrance and entertainment. Adults are $12 in advance online/ $15 at the gate; Children ages 4-14 are $5, and Foundation members free. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Proceeds from the event benefit the Deering Estate Foundation. For more information, call 305-2351668, ext. 263, or visit online at <www.deeringestate.org>.

Why hire an arborist to care for your trees? Planting: Arborists plant trees, and most can recommend types of trees that are appropriate for a specific location. The wrong tree in the wrong location could lead to future problems as a result of limited growing space, insects, diseases, or poor growth. Plant Health Car e: An Arborist keeps trees in good health by helping the tree to better defend itself against insects, disease, and site problems.

An arborist is a specialist in THE the care of individual trees. ARBORIST Right Tree – Right Place Arborists are knowledgeable about the needs of trees and are trained and equipped to provide proper care. Well-cared-for trees are attractive and can add considerable value to your property. Ser vices That Arborists Can Provide: Pr uning: An arborist can determine the type of pruning necessary to maintain or improve the health, appearance, and safety of trees. Removal: Although tree removal is a last resort, there are circumstances when it is necessary. An arborist can help you decide whether a tree should be removed. Emergency Tree Care: Storms may cause limbs or entire trees to fall, often landing on other trees, homes and other structures, or cars. The weight of storm-damaged trees is great, and they can be dangerous to remove or trim. An arborist can assist in performing the job in a safe manner, while reducing further risk of damage to property.

How do I know if this guy wi th a chainsaw is an Arborist? Many people who love trees become ISA members for a small annual fee. Some unscrupulous tree trimmers pretend that this simple membership is the same thing as being a “certified arborist.” Every ISA arborist has an individual ID number and ID card that you can check on the ISA website: <www.isa-arbor.com>. Ron von Paulus is an International Society of Arboriculture certified arborist (ID # Fl-5770A). He has more than 20 years experience working with trees in South Florida. He offers free consultations to homeowners and businesses. Please contact him at Big Ron’s Tree Service 305-588-3091 or by email at < ron@BigRonsTreeService.com>

St. Thomas Lutheran Church to conduct traditional Seder BY GWYN J. ALLISON

St. Thomas Lutheran Church in Palmetto Bay will host its 15th annual Seder dinner to recognize the significance of the Jewish Passover tradition in Christianity. The meal will take place on Thursday, Apr. 1, 7 p.m., in the church’s Fellowship Hall at 17700 Old Cutler Rd. A $6 donation is requested. The Seder is a ritual meal served on the first night of Passover, that commemorates the flight of the Jews from Egypt. The meal

includes unleavened bread, bitter herbs, beef brisket, and wine, which symbolize the challenges the Jews faced when leaving Egypt. St. Thomas Lutheran Church hosts the ceremony and the meal in an effort to understand the movement of the Passover to the Christian celebration of The Last Supper, The Holy Communion. The Seder demonstrates what Jesus and his disciples did that night as 13 Jewish men. For more information on St. Thomas Lutheran Church’s Seder dinner, call the church office at 305-232-1227.

Church sewing club works to clothe children of Haiti BY GARY ALAN RUSE

Members of the Charity Circle of the United Methodist Women have found a way to take an enjoyable hobby, their talents and effort, and put them to good use to help the children of Haiti in the aftermath of the January earthquake. Working in the Social Hall of the Kendall United Methodist Church, 7600 SW 104 St., for many hours every Thursday, the women bring their sewing machines and fabric and skillfully craft bright, colorful clothing for little girls and boys who have little or none of their own to wear in the shattered cities of Haiti. So far they have made at least 200 dresses and 500 baby blankets, as well as shorts for boys. There are now 15 women working on the project, but it started with a group of five who knew each other through the Viking Sewing Machine Gallery inside JoAnn Fabrics at the Greenery Mall in Kendall. Palmetto Bay resident Hellen Ventimiglia, who manages the Gallery and is an avid seamstress herself, got the ball rolling. “I was making dresses for my granddaughters, and I thought, I think I know some kids in Haiti that could use some like that,” Ventimiglia said. “It’s tough to see them on TV in their dirty clothes, or without clothes, just in rags. We figured this will, at least, cheer them up.” Since they are acquainted with medical personnel from Jackson Memorial Hospital and the University of Miami, they believe they have the perfect conduit for the donated dresses and things. “We’re sending them over there with some doctors and nurses who are going there because that way we’re sure the clothes will get put on the kids who need them,” Ventimiglia said. “Most of the baby blankets will go to the hospitals there where they have babies being born whose

parents have no clothes for them at all.” In addition to the things they’ve made, they also have obtained more than 1,000 pairs of underwear, using donations from others and the help of their church. For the women of the group, it’s not work, it’s a labor of love. “Over the years I’ve worked a lot with Haitian co-workers, and they are incredibly beautiful people,” Amalia “Molly” Gonzalez said. “Having been through Hurricane Andrew, when I saw what they

went through in Haiti, which was 10 times worse, it really broke my heart. “I admire their people and I wanted to help, what little we could. This is something we could do. I have a friend whose niece is an orthopedic surgeon who went down there to work, and the stories she brought back were heartbreaking.” Yvonne Emmanuelli echoed that sentiment and the desire to contribute her time and effort. “I’ve been sewing with Viking Gallery

for a number of years — I have their machines — and when Hellen told us that we were going to help Haiti doing these dresses, I immediately volunteered, as well as my friends,” Emmanuelli explained. “This has been the best therapy that we can do, working with our friends and knowing that we’re doing something good for people that really need it.” Bernadine Smith, another veteran seamstress, also was attracted to the project because of the tremendous need and her ability to contribute. “When you see what’s going on down in Haiti you feel very helpless and you want to do something, and this is something that we can do,” Smith said. “And it’s an ongoing thing we can keep doing. It’s something I can give back. I’ve been sewing for a long time, over 60 years. I learned from my grandmother.” While they’ve been gathering up enough garments to send down to the kids, the women made an impressive display of their efforts by hanging the dresses everywhere in the church’s main chapel, and draping the baby blankets over the front panels before the pews. The effect was so striking that it prompted a rash of other donations from non-sewing members of the church. One woman in the group has inspired her friends by doing what she can to help, putting edgings on blankets or sewing ribbons on a dress, even though she is afflicted with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). Despite being unable to talk and remember certain things, she shows up every Thursday with a smile on her face, ready to help. And if they tune in one day soon and see some Haitian kids on TV who are wearing clothes they recognize as being ones they made? “It will make us feel it was all worthwhile,” Ventimiglia said.

Short Sale: What is it? Do I have that option? BY DANIA S. FERNANDEZ, ESQ. Attorney at Law

Many homeowners are in distress with their mortgages. Dealing with a foreclosure and/or negotiating a loan modification is a common situation throughout South Florida. A short sale may be a viable option for those who have had enough and want to simply move on.

Here is basic and useful information regarding short sales: 1. What is a short sale? A short sale is an alternative to foreclosure where the lender/bank agrees to accept a sale price on your property that is less than what is owe on the loan. If you want to sell your home and you have no equity and owe more than it is worth, it will need to be through a short sale process. 2. When should I consider a short sale? This depends on your particular situation. If you wish you could just walk away from your house, then a short sale is appropriate. If what you need is more time, whether to find a better job or save money, then wait and do not sell your house yet. Many homeowners unable to pay their mortgage believe that they need to leave their home immediately. Keep in mind that once you leave your home you will either be living with someone else or you will have to rent. Do not forget that to rent you will probably have to pay first and last months’ rent plus a security deposit. A better plan is often to stay in your home and try to work out a loan modification as you simultaneously defend your foreclosure. Only you can decide if you want to fight for the home you have worked so hard for. 3. Where do I find buyers for a short sale? A common problem with short sales is finding a buyer. You need a Realtor who is knowledgeable about short sales and can market your home

to quickly find a buyer. Most attorneys work with a Realtor who is well-versed in the short sale process. Contact your attorney and get a referral for a Realtor. It will make a huge difference. 4. Do I need an attorney? An attorney will negotiate the short sale transaction. A short sale is processed much like a loan modification. The attorney will prepare all documentation and negotiate a deal with the lender/bank. In addition, you need to make certain the lender/bank waives its right to a deficiency judgment against you. A deficiency judgment is when the lender/bank pursues its right to come after you for the difference of what they agreed to allow the home to be sold for and what you owed to them. 5. What will I have to pay? The Realtor’s commissions are paid at closing by the lender/bank. An attorney may have an initial processing fee and may negotiate their fees with the lender/bank. In every short sale, time is a major factor; therefore it is best that the process be handled by an experienced professional. If a short sale is not processed correctly it could take longer to get an approval and eventually you may lose the potential buyer. There is a timeline for every alternative and every homeowner should be clear as to what step to take first. Whether it is a loan modification, foreclosure defense, short sale, deed in lieu of foreclosure or bankruptcy, each alternative is going to be specific to your individual case. Don’t be a homeowner who abandons their home prematurely! There are many viable alternatives. My initial consultation is free and many attorneys do the same. Write down all the questions you may have, get clear answers and start sleeping at night.

Dumb is better? That is what net neutrality advocates would have us believe. Their basic belief is that broadband networks should be pipes that indifferently pass information packets from one location to another, allowing content providers and customers equal opportunity to do whatever they want. Who could be against that? People interested in innovation and customer welfare. Remember Al Gore calling the Internet the Information Super Highway? The metaphor wasn’t and isn’t perfect, but it is instructive. Suppose we applied net neutrality to our transportation system – there would be no high occupancy vehicle lanes during rush hour, no car only lanes on interstates, and no toll road as an alternative to I-95 in South Florida. Transportation would be more costly and provide less value. Forcing net neutrality would have similar results. Time sensitive information, such as stock market transactions, would wait in line behind football game highlights. Financial dealings that would benefit from extra security would be given no better treatment than a Twitter from Taylor Swift’s E! interview. If you are thinking that it sounds like net neutrality restricts innovation and hurts customers, you’re right. Our research has shown that net neutrality limits innovation, contrary to the claims of the net neutrality proponents. How can this be? Imagine a one dimensional network – one that does noth-

ing but carry information from point to point, which is how the old Internet has worked. What kinds of content providers flourish in that context? Those big enough to distribute their software across the net and those whose software takes advantage of the great bandwidth that they don’t have to pay for. Now suppose that the network can offer enhancements that improve customers’ experiences. Content providers whose sites would not benefit from such enhancements could ignore the offering. But there will be some content providers who could improve their services by buying the enhancements, such as priority packet delivery. These sites become better without net neutrality and offer customers more service. In other words, there is more innovation and greater customer welfare without net neutrality than with it. Today’s successful Internet sites face great competition if we move beyond net neutrality principles. That probably explains why they are net neutrality’s strongest advocates. But moving beyond a dumb network is better for customers, sites that find new opportunities and networks. It should be no surprise that dumb isn’t better. In an innovation driven economy, restrictions don’t make us better. They hold us back. * The authors are Dr. Mark A. Jamison, Director, Public Utility Research Center, University of Florida and Dr. Janice Hauge, Associate Professor, Department of Economics, University of North Texas.

When Cutler Bay Business Association gets together, the members are not shy about promoting themselves. At the recent monthly meeting at Palmetto Bay Village Center, a diverse group met at 11 am to exchange business cards and talk shop, followed by a luncheon where each person attending gave the 15second “elevator speech” to describe the business specialty. A cross-section of attendees included a florist, some chiropractors, some candidates for political office, an air-conditioning specialist, bankers, travel consultants, an auto repair shop owner, a karate and selfdefense instructor, a web site designer, and a children’s gym owner. Anacapri To Go provided a fabulous meal for the group. Our sincere appreciation goes out to Jorge Reyes and Giuseppe Zuozo for their generosity. The store address is 20571 Old Cutler Road, Cutler Bay, FL.

Miami Dade College to present a unique musical performance BY SUE ARROWSMITH

The Arts and Philosophy Department at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Wolfson Campus will present an oddball ensemble — tenor saxophone, marimba (and wood block), electric guitar, and piano — on Sunday, Mar. 28. The concert, titled “Obsession!,” will include a performance of Louis Andriessen’s mind-bending piece Hout (Wood), among other compositions, starting at 3 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Miami, 400 Biscayne Blvd. Written in 1991, this entertaining work is a fast canon with entrances at the 16th note, each musician chasing the leader in riffs that sound like Bach gone mad. Dutch composer Andriessen is the Netherland’s most important living composer. His music often is didactic, and a common theme is perseverance. Hout is one of the most challenging works for the guitar, marimba, and saxophone. “Obsession!” moves from meditative to caffeinated, and features fresh sounds in

modern modes. Other pieces include Steve Reich’s Clapping Music; music of birds: Olivier Messiaen’s Le Merle Noir, and Somei Satoh’s Birds in Warped Time II, and Arvo Pärt’s hypnotic Spiegel im Spiegel. The concert will begin with Pastorale, music composed by Louis Andriessen’s father, Hendrik Andriessen. All of this music was written between 1941 and 1991. Featured musicians include flutist Ebonee Thomas, violinist Megan McClendan, saxophonist Matt Vashlishan, guitarist Aaron Lebos, percussionist Sergio Carreno, and pianist Alan Ngim. These versatile musicians also can be heard performing with the New World Symphony, Miami Children’s Chorus and The Delray Quartet, as well as at Churchill’s Pub, the Arsht Center and internationally. Members of the ensemble also teach at MDC, New World School of the Arts and the University of Miami. This performance is free to the public. For information, contact Dr. Alan Ngim, associate professor, at 305-237-3068, or by email at <angim@mdc.edu>.

FIU to hold arts, culture lovers auction fundraiser BY JESSICA RODRIGUEZ

Florida International University’s College of Architecture + The Arts presents the first annual Arts, Design and Culture Awards and Benefit on Mar. 25, 6 p.m., in the Westin Colonnade in Coral Gables. An auction will take place that includes incredible travel packages planned especially for art and culture enthusiasts to popular locations around the world. Guest will enjoy cocktails, a sit-down dinner, a performance by the FIU Amernet String Quartet, and a live auction that benefits student scholarships and academic programs at FIU. Following the auction, an award ceremony will be held to honor long-time FIU supporter Ambassador Paul L. Cejas for his generous commitment and contributions to the College of Architecture + The Arts. Amb. Cejas served as U.S. Ambassador to Belgium from 1998 to 2001. Upon his return to the U.S., he resumed responsibilities as chair and CEO of PLC Investments Inc., a wholly owned company that manages family investments in real estate, equities and venture capital projects. He has been a business and civic leader in the South Florida community for more than 30 years. Cejas has maintained an extensive involvement in the area of community and public service. The FIU School of Architecture Building is named in his honor. The auction will include travel packages like an “Art Lovers Tour to Europe” with round-trip airfare for two, hotel-stays, deluxe high-speed train-ride, an intimate tour of the Louvre, a cruise down the Seine River, and an architectural boat tour through Amsterdam’s canals. The “Adventure in Argentina” package includes round-trip airfare for two, hotelstay in Iguazu Falls, a visit to the famous Now Serving

Evita Balcony, and a stage performance in the newly renovated Teatro Colon Opera House. Also being auctioned off is a “Dancing with the Stars” package that includes round-trip airfare for two to New York City, a hotel-stay at the Millennium Broadway, a limousine ride, private dance lessons with hit-series Dancing With the Stars professional dancer Maksim Chmerkovskiy, a Broadway show, Water Club access, Tribeca Grill dinner for two, and a special architectural tour around Manhattan. The College of Architecture + The Arts also will be auctioning off other items such as a private performance of the Amernet String Quartet, music lessons by renowned music professors, art work and autographed books by distinguished art professors, and much more. “I am very excited to host the first annual College of Architecture + The Arts’ fundraising event that will support not just one, but all seven departments of art, design, and performance at FIU,” said Brian Schriner, interim dean of FIU College of Architecture + The Arts. “Although our college is young, we are quickly gaining a reputation for artistic and academic excellence at FIU and in South Florida. I am confident that this evening will boost our already excellent programs by providing more scholarships for our students and enticing the community to join the FIU family.” Tables and seats to the Art, Design and Culture Awards Benefit can be purchased by four different sponsorship opportunities. Visit <http://carta.fiu.edu/March25.aspx> for more details on sponsorship packages. For additional information and to purchase tickets call 305-348-0496 or send email to <carta@fiu.edu>.

2010 Audi TT is a sports car with an attitude Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS The Audi TT made its debut as a concept car in 1995 and consumer reaction was so strong that Audi brought to market as a hatchback coupe for the 2000 model year. It has been a barnstorming success from the start. For 2010, you can get the TT in both Coupe and Roadster models. Named after the Tourist Trophy auto race on the Isle of Man, the Audi TT is not quite a sports car and not quite a sport coupe or roadster; it’s more of a two-seat GT. The Coupe does have two rear seats, but they’re not much good for carrying people unless they’re small children. The TT was redesigned for the 2008 model year and represents the second generation of the sporty little vehicle. Although slightly larger, this second generation doesn’t stray far from the classic lines of its predecessor. The general look is the same, although character lines are crisper and the

nose has Audi’s now signature single-frame grille. Although longer and wider than the first TT, this latest version is lighter by almost 200 pounds in the case of the roadster, thanks to increased use of aluminum in the body structure. It also has a more powerful four-cylinder engine. Two trim levels — a 2.0T (200 hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine with frontwheel drive) and a 3.2 Quattro (250 hp V-6 with all-wheel drive) — are offered in a choice of hatchback coupe and roadster body styles. Transmission choices include a six-speed manual and a six-speed S-tronic twin-clutch sequential transmission that offers the ease of an automatic combined with the quick response of a manual. On the road, the 2.0T is more agile through the curves because it has less weight on the front tires, while the 3.2 Quattro has more power on straightaway and a more aggressive engine and exhaust sound. The TT has the low-slung look and feel of a sports car, but the personality is closer to a luxury sport coupe. From the side, there’s a look of poise and speed, with large fender arches housing stylish wheel options. The Coupe has a long, arching

roofline, while short overhangs in the front and rear give it well-balanced look. The TT Roadster includes integrated roll bars with aluminum inlays, which provide form and function. Integrated taillights follow the form of the TT along a subtle bodyline and incorporate a third LED taillight. On the inside, there’s a comfortable, driver-oriented cockpit with large, easy-toread gauges, and a magnesium tri-spoke, flat-bottom steering wheel, wrapped in
