Gulfstream Elementary awaits a remarkable new playground BY GARY ALAN RUSE

American Red Cross urges renewed attention to summer water safety

he students of Gulfstream Elementary soon will get a much-needed and longawaited new playground that is remarkable in both its design and the fact that it will be brought in and set up in just one day’s time. More than 200 volunteers from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and Miami-Dade County Public Schools, organizers from KaBOOM! and residents of the Cutler Bay community will join forces on Saturday, June 12, to build a new, safe playground at the school, using a design based on drawings created by children who participated in a Design Day event in April. Gulfstream Elementary’s 600 students have had to make do with outdated equipment to play on, but that will soon be removed to make room for the new playground that will provide them with a safer place to play. “We’re looking forward to the build day on June 12, when we will have volunteers

he Palmetto Bay Village Council during its May 3 meeting at the Deering Estate Visitors Center voted unanimously to pass an ordinance providing for reciprocal use of properly registered golf carts between the Town of Cutler Bay and Village of Palmetto Bay. The Cutler Bay Commission had enacted a similar ordinance on Feb. 17 permitting the golf carts of village residents to be used on town roads, so the move by the village council allows residents of both cities to “cross the line” and enjoy travel between the two communities. “I think the new ordinance is fantastic,” said village resident –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– See

Cutler Bay recognized as ‘Community for a Lifetime’ BY JON PECK

The Florida Department of Elder Affairs recently welcomed the Town of Cutler Bay to the ranks of Florida communities participating in the state’s “Communities for a Lifetime” initiative. Mayor Paul Vrooman and the town council voted to make the Cutler Bay — one of the newest incorporated municipalities in Florida — the 112th community to join the statewide initiative. “It’s inspiring when neighbors work together to create a better quality of life for local seniors,” said Elder Affairs Secretary E. Douglas Beach. “Through this partnership with the Department of Elder Affairs, the Town of Cutler Bay will have access to new tools to help its residents enjoy countless benefits. Our goal is to foster communities that are friendly not just for seniors, but for everyone.” Cutler Bay becomes the sixth MiamiDade County community to participate in

the initiative, joining county government, the Town of Miami Lakes and the cities of Miami Gardens, South Miami and Miami Beach. The last Miami-Dade community to become a Community for a Lifetime was Miami Beach, which joined the initiative in December. The Communities for a Lifetime initiative works with Florida cities, towns and counties to use existing local resources and state technical assistance to plan and implement improvements that benefit residents of all ages. It promotes planning in areas such as housing, transportation, health and wellness, volunteerism, intergenerational programs and employment. The goal is to help seniors remain independent and age in place within their communities throughout their lifetimes. We can help families stay safe by teaching skills through our swimming and water safety program that teaches children and adults to learn how to swim skillfully and safely.” A survey conducted by the American Red Cross in 2009 shows the importance of water safety skills, with half of those surveyed saying they have had a neardrowning experience in their lifetime. The survey found that 48 percent reported a near-drowning experience, and nearly one in three said they had a near-drowning scare between the ages of 5 and 15. The national survey of 1,002 adults was conducted in late March in advance of the summer to assess the water activity plans of families and their water safety knowledge and training. The Red Cross survey found more than 90 percent of people planned to participate in water-related activities in the summer with nearly half of parents — with children between the ages of 3 and 17 — planning to engage in water-related activities where no lifeguard would be on duty. If you plan to head to the pool or to the beach this summer or if you have a backyard pool, follow these tips from American Red Cross South Florida Region to have a fun and safe time on the water: • Never leave children unattended near water — not even for a moment! Adults should practice “reach supervision,” which means to always be within arm’s length when a young child is near water. For older children — even adults — who are not strong swimmers, practice “active” or con-

stant supervision and make sure they wear U.S. Coast Guard approved lifejackets whenever in or around the water. • Know how to respond to an emergency. You should know how to tell if a swimmer is in distress or is drowning and how and when to call for emergency help. You also should learn how to help someone in trouble in water while keeping safe yourself. Do not create a situation where you become a victim as well. Enroll in Red Cross water safety, first aid and CPR courses to learn what to do. • Keep lifesaving gear handy. Always have on hand a ring buoy, life jacket, rope, pole or other object that can be used to help a person in trouble. Remember to have a first aid kit, cordless phone and emergency contact information by the pool. • Know when it is too dangerous. If you, or someone you are swimming with, appear to be too cold, too far from safety, been exposed to too much sun, or had too much strenuous activity, it is time to head for shore or signal for help. • Eliminate temptation. Backyard pools should have self-closing, self-latching gates that remain locked when the pool is not being used. Kiddie pools should be emptied and toys removed immediately after use. Empty water pales and buckets so small children cannot fall in and drown. • Know what you’re getting into. Check local tides, currents and other conditions that could be dangerous before entering open bodies of water. They’re the ones who designed this playground and we tried to have one that met as many of their requirements as possible.” The playground is one of 14 to be built by KaBOOM! and the Knight Foundation this year, and one of more than 150 KaBOOM! will lead across the country in 2010 with the goal of providing a great place to play within walking distance of every child in America. In addition to the community-built playground, the new play area also will include an “Imagination Playground in a Box,” a breakthrough playspace concept designed by architect David Rockwell to encourage child-directed, unstructured free play. Complete with custom designed blue foam blocks and other loose parts, and elements that encourage sand and water play, Imagination Playground in a Box allows children to constantly reconfigure their environment and design their own course of play. The “build-in” begins at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 12, with a kickoff ceremony and volunteer deployment. Construction takes place from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with volunteers assembling the brightly colored playground equipment. Around 2:30 to 3

Marshall Berk. “It’s easy to get around — there’s less traffic on the side streets. It’s fun. I think people are going to have a nice time with it. I have family in Cutler Bay, so we can visit each other with the carts, now.” Berk is one of a number of golf cart owners who is registered and enjoys using the scaled-down form of transportation to visit friends and relatives, get coffee or food or do some shopping in accessible areas. He also said that when he is in the golf cart, people wave and respond to him in a friendly manner, and the relaxed pace is nice. “I wish Pinecrest would do the same thing,” Berk said. “I have some family members over there, too.” To operate golf carts on streets within Palmetto Bay or Cutler Bay, the carts must be registered with one of the municipalities, driven by someone 18 or older with a

valid driver’s license, be covered by insurance and have the required basic safety equipment. Carts must have four wheels, lights, turn signals, brakes, seatbelts, be limited to less than 20 miles per hour and carry no more than four people. All streets in the village are permitted except for major heavily trafficked ones such as S. Dixie Highway (US1), Old Cutler Road, SW 136th Street, SW 144th Street, SW 152nd Street, SW 168th Street, SW 184th Street, SW 67th Avenue, SW 77th Avenue, SW 82nd Avenue, SW 87th Avenue and SW 97th Avenue. Carts cannot be operated on sidewalks, bike paths, swales or inside of parks (other than legitimate parking spaces). There’s a $50 initial registration fee, but the annual renewal is only $10. Running in general election different than primary R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETHâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S COMMENTARY I really donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think the U.S. Senate race in Florida is an â&#x20AC;&#x153;anyone can winâ&#x20AC;? threeway race. Everything â&#x20AC;&#x153;wasâ&#x20AC;? nice and cozy for both Kendrick Meek and Marco Rubio as long as Charlie Crist stayed in the Republican Party. Rubio had the upper hand and short of some disastrous revelation would have coasted into the November elections. Independents were up for grabs. True, Rubio has the American Express debacle potentially hanging over his head. But I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think it will have much of an impact. Contributors to the Republican Party of Florida are more interested in having their man elected to office than they are about a ruckus over improper spending of political contributions. Meek currently has total control over the Democratic primary. He has a few opponents but they are underfunded and have the same problem as Meek, but to a far less

â&#x20AC;&#x201C;â&#x20AC;&#x201C; VIEWPOINT â&#x20AC;&#x201C;â&#x20AC;&#x201C; extent. They basically are unknown north of Palm Beach County. The entry of Jeff Greene, a billionaire from Palm Beach County into the Democratic race can cause a primary race problem for Meek inasmuch as Greene plans on dumping millions of his own dollars into the race. Not being beholden to any power structure or lobbying groups will appeal to a number of voters. Gov. Cristâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s long anticipated move out of the Republican Party, becoming an Independent, or as he calls it a â&#x20AC;&#x153;NPAâ&#x20AC;? No Party Affiliation, is creating financial problems for Crist as many of the dollars he has in his campaign war chest will be going back to contributors angered by his move. Cristâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s move will take votes away from Meek as a number of registered Democrats are concerned that Meek will not fair well in North Florida. In the general election, they may turn to Crist, who is more of a Democrat than many elected Democrats

sitting in Washington, DC. For the life of me I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t understand the Republican position on the stimulus package embraced by Crist a year ago when President Obama visited our state and received a warm welcome from the the governor. It is a good political move by Rubio, but in my opinion rings hollow because the Republican-controlled Legislature in Tallahassee not only embraced Obamaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s stimulus money, but proudly used it to balance the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s budget. Simply said, without the stimulus dollars some $800 billion in all, we would be seeing many more cuts in services in next yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s budget. There just isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t enough revenue to cover all of Floridaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s needs. Without Obamaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s stimulus dollars, the Republican Party would have had a tough time explaining even deeper cuts in services without any increases in taxes. It would appear that if Crist can quickly reassemble a statewide team of supporters

and can cover the dollars he will loose to the far right Republicans then he should be our next senator from Florida. Crist doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to face the difficult task of moving his campaign to the middle of the political spectrum come the general elections. Republicans must appear to be to the right of the Tea Party to win their primary. Democrats must be to the left of the old Labor Party to win their primary. Once the primary races are settled, the winning candidates must pull to the middle of the political road to win the general election. Crist is lucky. He already is there. Being a grandparent is like leasing a car BY ERNIE SOCHIN Councilmember

I have often heard it said that kids should come with an instruction manual. Maybe so. Dr. Spock wrote one but I am not sure people use it anymore. I found the secret to raising wonderful kids. Marry a woman who knows how to do it. I did and it worked out just fine. Now grandkids are a different story. This is where my expertise comes in. My wife always is upset that when our grandkids come to our house, the first thing they ask is “where’s Papa?” Not that grandma isn’t great with them — buys them clothes, takes them shopping and all that good stuff — but Papa is, in their eyes a huge toy that doesn’t require “AA” batteries to work, although there are times that I feel like I need some. When they first step through our door they ask for candy. This is just a formality because they know exactly where it is hidden and end up helping themselves anyway. When they come for a sleepover we allow them to stay up until midnight — a real treat. The only requirement is that they watch our digital clock change numbers until it reaches midnight. They usually last about 10 minutes until they fall asleep, but in their minds they beat the system. Feeding them is a lot of fun. They just don’t eat anything worth while. When they sleep over, they insist on grandma making breakfast waffles for them — not to eat, but so they can watch her struggle with the waffle maker and all those mixes. One time we gave them some of those frozen Eggos from the supermarket. They loved them and actually ate some. Going to restaurants is also an adventure. We let them choose and of course their first

choice is always Cracker Barrel. Not for the food, which they don’t eat anyway, but in case you didn’t know it, they sell toys there. Papa can’t say no. Playing with their “big toy” is the best part. They love to play rough house which involves jumping on my back and using me as an imaginary surfboard. I pay the price the next day but it is worth it. Of course my time with them is limited, not because I will eventually go to that big tennis court in the sky but because they are getting too old for some of Papa’s nonsense. My 4-year-old granddaughters no longer believe that there are monsters in my garage, even after I hid a Walkie Talkie there and made monster sounds. When I visit them at school they always ask how I got there and my stock answer is that I flew in on my Pterodactyl. Recently both of them told me that Pterodactyls are extinct (Their words). Not to be outdone, I immediately went to my computer and created a photo of me with my pet Pterodactyl. One of the smart—s kids said Papa must have done that with Photoshop on his computer. Damn those kids. Their conversations keep getting more and more involved. I found myself discussing evolution versus creationism with my 6year-old grandson. I spend more time on Google trying to answer their questions than I do anything else. Now the good part of being a grandparent — it is like leasing a car. You eventually get to return it. Same with the grandkids; once they have had their fill of sugar and are raring to go, just hand them back to their parents and leave quickly. Palmetto’s Weiner in running for district Principal of Year BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD

Palmetto High School Principal Howard Weiner has been named the Region Five Principal of the Year. Although this is his ninth year as a principal, this is the first time he has been named Principal of the Year. He was previously the administrator at South Pointe Elementary, 2001-02, and principal at North Miami Middle School from 2002 to 2005 when he arrived at Palmetto High. “To me, it’s a distinct honor to be recognized by my fellow colleagues and by my region,” Weiner said. “I think one of our strengths is our outstanding record of being an A school.” Weiner was nominated by someone in the Palmetto feeder pattern. Each feeder pattern nominates a candidate, who is then required to fill out a packet of information, including several essays that must be turned in to the region. Those packets include areas such as what the candidate has done to reduce student absences or increase parental involvement. This school year, with his blessings, the Palmetto PTSA tried something new in order to get more parents involved in the school. “We’ve reached out to underserved parents by having PTSA meetings and work-

shops at R. R. Moton,” he said. “The most important ingredient for student success is parental involvement.” It is his support of these types of programs that show why Weiner has a good relationship with the PTSA. “These are things that aren’t done in isolation; they are done collectively,” he said. Randi Trazenfeld, a PTSA board member, said Weiner deserves the distinction of Principal of the Year. “He continually makes it clear that the kids are his top priority, and the students realize this. The students know that their education, safety and success are most important to him,” she said. “Mr. Weiner is approachable and transparent, willing to discuss any and all concerns that parents may have.” Trazenfeld is gratified especially with his whole-hearted support of the Community Outreach effort and the fact that he does whatever he can to promote parental involvement opportunities for all parents. The Principal of the Year honor places him in the pool to become the MiamiDade Public Schools Principal of the Year at an event scheduled on May 19. He is competing against candidates from the other four regions.

Dadeland Mall cooks up Mini Chefs family fun BY ASHLEY SUGARMAN

Financial Planning for FPL Employees I am an FPL employee. Do you have any suggestions specifically geared toward my employment? Yes, I have been working with FPL since 1991 (18 years), and I have some suggestions that should apply to you regardless of your age or time with the company. First: I suggest that you complete a comprehensive questionnaire (fact finder) with a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) in order to determine your 401k investment criteria and a realistic budget to see what you can contribute to the 401k. Second: Make an effort to maximize your contribution to your 401k plan. FPL matches your contribution up to 7% of your straight time salary. I suggest that you try to get to the 20% level especially if you are a new hire. Your 401k contribution actually decreases your taxable income so there’s a tax break for doing this. Third: Stay with FPL until the Rule 90 is satisfied. Rule 90 is a point system that

adds your age and time with FPL. Once you reach 90 points, your medical benefits are paid until age 65. At age 65, Medicare will be your health provider. For every point less than 90 you pay 2% of the insurance premium. If your age (55) and time with FPL (25 years) totals 80 then you will pay 20% of the premium. There are certain transition credits and age 55 rules that also need to be considered. The rule 90 does not apply for some new hirees. The health insurance premiums for people outside of FPL is a major cost. This will require that you save as much as you can, keep your other bills low and pay attention to your health. Convert to a Roth IRA? Why Now May Be the Right Time? BY LAURA GROGAN-O’MARA of Merrill Lynch The IRS has lifted income restrictions for those converting traditional IRAs or 401(k)s to Roth IRAs. Is the opportunity right for you? Since its introduction in 1997, the Roth IRA has enjoyed great popularity. Roth IRA owners can make after-tax contributions and withdraw them, taxfree, at any time if certain conditions are met. Once the account has been open and funded for five years, distributions will be income-tax and penalty-free provided the account holder is at least age 59½ or meets one of the other circumstances for making a qualified distribution.1 Another significant benefit is that Roth IRAs are not subject to Internal Revenue Service (IRS) mandated required minimum distributions (RMDs) during the holder’s lifetime, which means the assets can remain in the account until the account owner makes a voluntary distribution. This differs from a raditional IRA where generally the account owner must begin taking RMDs annually, starting with the year that he or she reaches 70 ½ years of age. 2 One of the Roth’s few drawbacks has been its income restriction for converting from a traditional IRA. However, starting this year, the IRS has lifted the income restriction for investors who convert their traditional IRA and/or eligible employer-sponsored retirement plan such as a 401(k) to a Roth IRA.3 If you’re focused on saving for retirement, this is good news. But anyone considering converting to a Roth IRA needs to underTom Mays, stand the less obvious effects of this decision. For instance, the conversion involves an up-front tax liability that may be worth assuming, depending on your circumstances and retirement income strategy. Typically, it makes most sense to convert when: • The balance of the traditional IRA you’re converting is substantial • You expect to occupy a higher tax bracket in retirement than you do now • You expect your beneficiaries to move to a higher tax bracket after they inherit your IRA assets • You can pay the taxes on the conversion from assets other than those being converted Consider these questions when you speak with your Financial Advisor about Roth IRAs: • How would I benefit during retirement from a Roth conversion now? • What assets do I have available to cover any tax liability that proceeds from converting my IRA or 401(k)? • How would converting my IRA or 401(k) to a Roth IRA affect my beneficiaries? There are two other factors you may want to consider as you mull over the choice. One isthat market turbulence may have primed your IRA or 401(k) for conversion—a lower account balance generates a lower tax burden. The other thing to remember is that, you generally must recognize the full taxable income from your conversions in the conversion year. However, under a special rule for conversions you make in 2010, you may elect to bring one-half of the taxable portion of your conversion into ordinary income tax in 2011 and the other half of the taxable portion into ordinary income in 2012. This means that you are subject to whatever the ordinary income tax rates are in 2011 and 2012 respectively and does not lock in your 2010 ordinary income tax rates. Another way to potentially mitigate the taxable burden is by converting only a portion of your assets.

However, it’s wise to explore the ramifications beforehand. Converting a portion of IRA assets is more complex than it seems at first blush. Investors may be under the impression that it’s possible to convert only after-tax IRA contributions to a Roth and thus avoid having to pay any taxes on the conversion. As nice as that would be, it’s not possible because of the way the IRS views IRA assets. Even if you have after-tax money in your IRA, the IRS won’t allow you to convert only those contributions. Instead, the IRS looks at all your IRA accounts together and prorates the taxes you owe based on both taxable and nontaxable assets. Of course, all the earnings on your contributions are still subject to tax upon conversion. Taxes on earnings are not prorated—it doesn’t matter whether those earnings came from deductible or nondeductible contributions. In the right situation, converting to a Roth IRA can be extremely beneficial to your retirement plans. It’s important to work with both your Financial Advisor and your accountant to help you determine whether this brand-new opportunity can help you achieve your retirement savings goals. The RMD can be taken any time during the year but no later than Dec. 31. For the year in which the owner turns 70 ½, the deadline is extended until April 1 of the following year. In any year that an RMD is due, the IRS considers the first distribution to contain the RMD. Converting your account to a Roth IRA requires you take the RMD before converting your account. Ineligible funds converted to a Roth IRA will be subject to penalties and will be required to be removed as excess. You should review any planned financial transactions or arrangements that may have tax or accounting implications with your personal professional advisors. 3 Please note, however, that income-based restrictions are still in place regarding how much you can contribute to a Roth IRA.

The Blue Water Fishing Classic, presented by Haulover Marine Center, is an annual fishing tournament for amateur, professional and junior anglers offering a total of $30,000 in cash and prizes for the team with the largest combined weight of the three largest fish within the species of dolphin, wahoo, black-fin tuna and kingfish. Each participating marina will have a first place, second place, third place and junior angler winner and many other prizes. Tournament festivities kick off on Thursday, June 3, with a Captain’s Party with dinner and open bar. The competition will be two days later. On Sunday, June 6, winners will receive their prizes at an award ceremony that includes dinner. The entry fee is $350 per boat by June 1 and $400 up to the day of the tournament. On that day, participating boats must check into their marina by 7 a.m. Boats must remain in U.S. waters and IGFA rules apply. All fish caught must meet local, state and federal regulations.

The improvements are expected to alleviate the existing drainage deficiencies in the area and improve the water quality of the stormwater run-off. Construction is anticipated to begin in May 2010 and substantially completed by September 2010. Traffic patterns in the area may be altered as the project progresses. Sign n Up p forr thee Cutlerr Bayy Summerr Camp The last day of school is just around the corner and it’s time to think about what your children will do this summer. The Town of Cutler Bay offers an excellent summer for children of all ages with the safeguard that they are in good hands with experienced staff and with plenty of fun things to do. Registration will begin May 17th. Summer camp begins June 14th and runs until August 20th. The program is available to children between the ages of 6-13 years old. They will be divided into groups of 7 and under, 9 and under, 11 and under and 13 and under. Most activities, boys and girls are in separate groups. The registration fee is $10.00 per child and the weekly fee is $50.00 per child and $45.00 per week for any siblings. The program starts everyday at 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Please pack lunch and snacks for your child. There is a field trip once a week, permission slips will be sent home each week with information regarding the field trip location, time and cost. Children will have a chance to enjoy Cutler Ridge Park swimming pool each week for two hours. Panini Grill wants to be home away from home BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD In Cutler Bay, not far from the Publix, there is a new restaurant, Panini Grill, that wants to be your home away from home. Panini Grill, 20465 Old Cutler Rd., has a homey atmosphere with fresh foods and free coffee with their breakfast offerings. “We are open early for breakfast,” said Vachagan Robert Yengibaryan, who with his wife, Natalia, own and operate Panini Grill. “We open at 7 a.m. with gourmet muffins and big croissants with ham and cheese.” He said the idea behind the restaurant is that Panini Grill is a place where you can go out to eat and eat well without having to break the bank. While you’re at Panini Grill you can watch the news, read your favorite book or newspaper. And if you didn’t bring a book, they have a few James Patterson novels that you can read. They also have X-Box and a Wii for kids to play. “We tailored this based on our needs. What we want in our neighborhood,” he said. “Customers are telling us this is what we need. A neighborhood gathering place.” In the near future, they will offer

European beer and wines for the customers who come later in the day. They are open until 11 p.m. “The idea is not spend $15-$20 per per-

son (to eat),” he said. “The most expensive item here is $8.95.” They have been Cutler Bay residents for five years and also own a restaurant in Wellington. They moved to Cutler Bay when Yengibaryan secured a teaching job. He has taught at Southridge and Killian high schools. Yengibaryan has a degree in International Relations from Moscow State University and a PhD in Constitutional and International Law. When he lived in Moscow he owned 15 pharmacies and he had a pharmacy export business. His wife has a degree in business administration. He no longer teaches although he manages a student exchange program for Florida International University. “I bring students to study English,” he said. But his passion is cooking and he set aside his other interests to open the restaurants. Since he is very much into education, Yengibaryan studied on his own and received certifications needed to be in the food industry. He and his wife devised a menu using their European background and knowledge of Mediterranean foods. “The menus went through big changes

in the beginning,” he said. “It was a slower menu. Eventually we had to develop more items that could be done quickly. We are trying to stick with organic things. Chicken that we make is Kosher rated. No hormones, no antibiotics.” They also have a children’s menu that includes homemade chicken tenders. “We also have a vegetarian menu,” he said. “We make our own hummus.” The menu includes fresh soups and four different breads for wraps. “Once a week we offer something new,” he said. “If it sticks, we keep it on the menu.” So far, the desserts have been a hit. Desserts include mango mousse, Italian almond cake, and baklava. “We make all of our muffins,” Yengibaryan said. “And fresh cookies.” So far, the most popular item on the menu is the Greek gyro. It can be made with beef, lamb or chicken. “We make fabulous smoothies. They do not contain ice or powders.” Everything on the menu is available for pick-up. Acura adds V-6 power to popular TSX sport sedan Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS The 2010 Acura TSX sport sedan has been given a hot new 3.5-liter V-6 engine for 2010 and it really is something special. Most auto enthusiasts who drove the earlier TSX with the 2.4-liter DOHC I-4 engine raved about the car’s performance. But, you ain’t seen nothing ’til you drive the newest version with the V-6. The new SOHC V-6 develops 280 hp and 254 pounds-feet of torque, has a very high compression ratio, VTEC valvetrain control and a dual-stage induction system through a lightweight magnesium intake manifold. It all adds up to rocket-like acceleration and pretty good gas mileage at 18/27 mpg. The V-6 is mated to a sophisticated Sequential SportShift five-speed automatic transmission that allows for a fully automatic operation with intelligent features such as Grade Logic Control and Shift

Hold Control, which make driving on a winding road an enjoyable experience. The transmission also may be operated manually with the steering wheel- mounted paddle shifters. The second generation TSX is larger, has a wider stance, is more agile and handles even better that its predecessor. It also has special suspension tuning, larger diameter wheels and tires (18x8-inch aluminum wheels with a split five-spoke design mounted with performance Michelin Pilot HX MXM4 P235/45R18 all-season tires) and brake system upgrades, as well as more comfort, convenience and safety features with expanded luxury and electronic equipment. Acura will continue to offer the TSX powered by a 201 hp DOHC inline fourcylinder engine (20/28). All 2010 TSX models have a state-ofthe-art double wishbone front and multilink rear suspension system for an excellent ride, handling and control. The new V-6 model’s independent front suspension has firmer springs and revised calibration for the dual-mode suspension dampers. As for styling, the new Acura TSX continues with the crisp, dynamic design of the original, though widened overall and with more muscular styling cues. All TSX mod-

els ride on a chassis that includes a closedchannel cross-braced roof structure and inside frame rails. Along with a stronger rear bulkhead, the closed-channel crossbraced roof structure yields a more rigid and vibration-resistant body. On the inside, the interior is a blend of sweeping, contemporary shapes, with a high level of comfort and convenience features. There’s a much easier-to-read navigation screen (when equipped with the Technology Package) and an improved look of telephone number text displayed on the Multi Information Display. The TSX V-

6 has a one-touch ignition key starter system and an updated tachometer face with a unique rpm redline range that corresponds to the new V-6 engine.
