Cutler Bay SERVING SOUTH DADE
JULY 28, 2009
Residents now able to enjoy sidewalks BY SANDRA CUERVO he Town of Cutler Bay recently obtained ownership of all the local roads and sidewalks, which were transferred from Miami-Dade County. As a result of the transfer, Cutler Bay immediately conducted a town-wide Sidewalk and Roadway Assessment Survey. The commissioned survey identified more than 1,400 damaged sidewalk sections, which were located along local roadways. One of the main priorities of the town council was to permanently repair the identified damaged sidewalks. The council, upon receiving competitive bids, approved a $500,000 contract with JA&M Developing Corp. to perform the necessary replacements. The Sidewalk Replacement Program is currently underway and expected to be completed within the next four to five months. Additionally the contract includes the installation of ADA compliant ramps and detectible warning devices at key intersections. To date, town staff has received positive comments from homeowners who said they were very “thankful” that the sidewalks are being replaced. In fact, some residents informed the town that some of the sidewalks were damaged as a result of Hurricane

BY GARY ALAN RUSE he issue of property taxes and the town’s millage rate was on everyone’s mind at the July 15 meeting of the Cutler Bay Town Council as the council discussed a resolution setting the proposed millage rate at a maximum of $3.0310 per $1,000 of assessed value. Some residents, such as Bill Meiklejohn, were concerned this might mean an increase in taxes and came to express their views and learn more about the issue. “This is not a final rate and the final rate could be lower, but it will not be higher,” Meiklejohn said after the meeting. “There will be two public hearings taking place at the South Dade Regional Library, on Sept. 10 and Sept. 23, at 7 p.m.”

These are all people that I used to sell to when I was in the Manufacturer’s Rep business. How many new names will be added to this list in the next few years? Scary, huh? The ones listed died through natural attrition in the retail business. I
don’t know why, other than the fact that markets and products change and the methods of selling as well. Some time ago, I had a small chain of Hi Fi stores when the only place you could buy a high fidelity or stereo set was from a specialized store, There was no such thing as discounting or huge discount stores selling the same products at much lower prices than you, an independent merchant could offer. The failures that are happening now are a different story. There simply are no customers buying stuff now. I’ll always remember one of the last days as being a manufacturers rep. I was standing in the hallway of my home, sample cases in hand but not moving towards my car. My wife came by and asked why I was just standing there. I replied that I simply had no one left to call on. I truly felt like Willy Loeman for a few minutes. “I killed ’em in Miami,” to paraphrase from the play Death of a Salesman.

As a result of challenging economic times and budget cuts, a group of community leaders, municipalities and local businesses teamed up in an effort to save Black Point Marina’s July 4 fireworks celebration, dubbed “Save Our Fireworks Sponsors.” Nearly 8,000 spectators gathered on Saturday, July 4, to enjoy fun-filled family activities, great food, live music, a Coast Guard flyover, and spectacular fireworks display at Miami-Dade County’s Black Point Park and Marina, 24775 SW 87 Ave. in Cutler Bay. The Save Our Fireworks Sponsors included: Commissioner Katy Sorenson; MiamiDade Park and Recreation; Perrine Baseball and Softball Association, a not-for-profit,

Members of the town council had differing views on the matter. Mayor Paul Vrooman and Councilman Ernie Sochin suggested that this was a rollback option to the taxes paid by property owners in Cutler Bay in 2008 and, although it would be about $59 more that they would have to pay if there was no millage rate increase, based on falling property values, it still would be less than last year. “It’s a small price to pay to maintain the current level of service in Cutler Bay,” Sochin said at the meeting. Vice Mayor Ed MacDougall was against any increase and suggested that even $60 in today’s economy would be harmful to residents. “It is important that we know how the town is going to budget their expenses based on each of the millage rates proposed,” MacDougall said. “I will not know that until they have been produced. I am going to push for a pro-forma in advance. There are too many unanswered questions, but the first budget hearing should produce many more answers.” Cutler Bay’s millage rate for its first four years of existence always has been 2.447, the third lowest in the county, after Aventura, Pinecrest and Bal Harbour, which are wealthy cities with very highly valued properties. The Cutler Bay portion of property tax bill paid by the average homeowner is only $303 currently. That would be $308 (rounding makes it $5 more) with the new rate. Property tax is not the only revenue source for the town. Other sources such as sales tax, franchise fees, etc. are dropping statewide and expectations are a

The town is cutting back from its budget of a little over $20 million already, due to those revenue drops. Mayor Paul Vrooman was concerned, especially after some recent incorrect news reports, that residents might think they were facing a tax increase in the coming year instead of maintaining taxes at essentially the same level. Basically, since property values have fallen (a 19 percent drop), with no adjustment to the millage rate the taxes would drop about $59 on average per homeowner, but reduced revenue to the town could cause cuts in police protection and other needed services, and reduce the emergency reserve in case of hurricanes or other disasters. “In the deepest economic crisis since the great depression, Cutler Bay’s taxpayers live in a secure town with one of the lowest tax rates in the county,” Mayor Vrooman said in an exclusive interview. “It’s secure in our reserves, in our stability of services and in our commitment to be efficient while we maintain our communities so they don’t fall into decay during the crisis. “We can hold the line on our portion of the average tax bill and protect our neighborhoods from slipping or we can be tempted to be politically safe, let people have a negligible savings on their tax bill while they wonder where the police went, why the parks closed and why there’s trash on the roads. If it’s the second choice, I worry that the decline will cost people much more in additional slippage on their property value than they would save on their tax bill. “In any event, I don’t think there is sentiment on the council for people to pay more than they did last year but I hope we can have the leadership to communicate the importance of keeping that revenue at the current low level,” the mayor concluded.

Who opposes expansion of the US1 Busway into a Sunpass-type toll road? asks an MPO honcho in an “off-therecord” phone call. It’s no secret that several East Kendall ‘actives’ in community affairs who appear regularly at MPO/Transit meetings have begun protesting the idea. Necessity of closing SW 98th Street at the South Dadeland Metrorail Station would create havoc with overloads on alternate streets in the Continental
Park area, according to one stressed-out neighbor, long-attuned to county proposals that would upset the peace of that neck of East Kendall woods. Not to mention how a fund-strapped county treasury can pay for major eastwest overpasses at SW 104 Street and points south to allay the risk of bonebreaking collisions by ear-to-cell phone speeders, according to another traffic toiler who got our ear. Then, up pops a bulletin from a Stopthe-Falls anti-incorporation E-Mail, urging residents write commissioners to turn down the busway as a “Lexus Lane” for “certain” commuters willing to pay $11-12 fees for a US1 bypass. The commissioners “need to suffer the consequences of lousy planning to keep our traffic problems on the front burner. If they don’t have to suffer the traffic, they will be less inclined to try to correct it (while) taxpayers fund these expensive trips as ‘travel’ expenses,” our correspondent sez. Limit busway travel to buses and emergency vehicles — only! So declare several who have caught our ear when buzz about the busway boils up in conversations. Even so, let’s keep an open mind and ear to future proposals. Our local traffic still needs all the creative thinking it can afford, now that a Kendall Drive Metrorail is long down the drain! What does it mean? Well, it might mean a fine and not much else. Unless that evidence can be used against her in the city manager’s lawsuit against her. This most recent complaint will probably be heard in a couple of months by a local judge. And do you want to bet that if the judge finds her at fault that those findings will make their way up to the Governor? HMMMM. And speaking of Valerie, saw and heard her husband, Kevin, who was

Insider trading can make senator or congressman very rich R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY General Motors is having a worse than anticipated quarter. Several members of the U.S. House of Representatives learn the extent of the loss in the course of a committee meeting that keeps on top of the company’s activities since our government became the majority stockholder in GM, information that won’t be public knowledge for a few days. A Washington businessman, whose daughter happens to work as a staffer in Congress, tells her dad of the news she overheard her boss telling his chief of staff about GM’s condition. The Congressman puts in a sell order on GM as a result of the committee hearings. The Washington businessman goes short on the stock. Two days later the news of GM’s worse than anticipated quarter is made public and both the Congressman and the Washington businessman make killings in the stock market.
The Congressman sold his GM stock before the news drove the price of GM down 20 percent. He saved a small fortune. The businessman, shorting the stock, made a pile of money. What’s wrong with this picture? The businessman can go to jail for insider trading. The Congressman can keep his savings and not have to worry as he did not break the law. Wait, I thought that insider trading was against the law. The law says that you can’t use knowledge obtained in advance of the public, to make a profit. People regularly go to jail for doing it. Didn’t the Congressman have to fear the law? No, because members of Congress and their staffs are exempt from the law against insider trading. Does this mean that members of the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives, who on a daily basis are privy to insider information now that we, our United States government, is a major stockholder in so many large public corporations, can take advantage of this information and make a killing in the stock market? Yes, they can. How can we expect Congress to regulate the operations of the market when they are exempt from the laws they create
––– VIEWPOINT ––– to protect the community from skullduggery? We can’t! Try this scenario: A well-to-do citizen has a friend running for reelection to Congress. He goes to the Congressman and says, “Hey buddy, I’ll make a major contribution to your national committee, and give the maximum I can give to your reelection fund; my wife too, if you watch out for me.” “What do you need, my friend?” responds the Congressman, looking around the room to make sure no one is listening to their conversation. “You sit on the General Motors oversight committee. I know you are made aware of information about GM’s financial condition before the general public knows, right?” “Right!” “It’s not illegal for you to use this information, so pass the news on to me, I will buy or go short on the stock in your name and we will make a financial killing! Okay?”
“Okay!” It’s hard to believe, but two members of Congress, Louise Slaughter (D-NY) and Brian Baird (D-WA) have introduced legislation that would prohibit lawmakers and their staffs from trading stocks or engaging in other financial transactions based upon information they learn in their jobs that is not available to the public. It’s nice to know someone in Congress is looking out for us. Just don’t bet on this bit of insider information that the proposed law will pass. If you make that bet, you are a sure loser.

Florida foreclosure numbers nothing less than shocking Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY The latest Florida foreclosure numbers are nothing less than shocking. We still are one of the worst states in the nation in terms of statistics, with one out of every 33 residential units now facing foreclosure action. South Florida has it particularly bad, with a record number of South Florida residents still losing their homes despite foreclosure moratoriums and billions of dollars in federal aid. The numbers for the first half of 2009 are going from bad to worse according to National Real Estate Analyst Realty Trac. It reports more than a quarter million Florida homes faced foreclosure filings the first half of this year, which is equivalent to one in every 33 properties. These numbers now lead some financial analysts to believe that South Florida’s recovery could stall until the state’s foreclosure epidemic stabilizes. Coral Gables Financial Analyst Lane Jones of Evensky & Katz tells me, “Certainly if some forecasters believed we’d see an improvement in the third or fourth quarters, it would give them some room to pause and perhaps realize the recovery may not get going as quickly as we’re hoping.” Our growing foreclosure rate raises serious questions about whether banks are doing enough with the $50 billion
worth of federal funding earmarked to keep people in their homes. The head of the Florida Bankers Association insists local banks are willing to help customers. Alex Sanchez recently told the Associated Press, “Go see your banker. Tell your banker about your need. Let him or her know you’d like to work something out, and I think you’ll find that most banks, if not all, will work with the customer to keep the Florida family in their home.” Florida Governor Charlie Crist, who’s now running for U.S. Senate, remains upbeat. “We could hope for a better economy, and I think that’s the most important thing we need,” he said. “Obviously, we need that to happen and hopefully that is going to happen.” Some local analysts say, however, that we’re now sinking even deeper into a negative growth cycle for our local housing markets, with foreclosed properties continuing to glut the local real estate market. That, in turn, is depressing prices and lowering local tax bases. It also is blocking the new residential construction that’s so vital to getting people back to work. With very few signs of improvement — despite what our state and federal politicians keep promising — the cycle of recession continues for South Florida.

BY ALEJANDRA CASTRO-NUÑEZ Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) has received 27 sets of pet oxygen masks that were donated by the Miami Obedience Club. “We are very grateful to the Miami Obedience Club for its generous contribution,” said Fire Chief Herminio Lorenzo. “With the addition of the 27 sets, a total of 46 fire units will now have these valuable life-safety devices for our four-legged friends.” Formed in 1961, the Miami Obedience Club is an AKC-licensed dog obedience club that takes great pride in training
owners to train their dogs. All ages, from puppies to older adult dogs, are accepted for training in a group setting on Monday evenings at Tropical Park. MDFR still needs 52 additional sets so that every response vehicle can be equipped with the pet oxygen masks. The masks are used at fire scenes where pets are rescued and require oxygen. Like the oxygen masks used by humans, the pet masks provide oxygen to dogs and cats that have suffered from smoke inhalation during a fire. They are specially designed to fit over an animal’s snout, and they come in three different sizes.

New high school in Homestead offers 21st Century approach BY ELLEN SCHULMAN The Homestead City Council recently approved plans for the new Mavericks High School of South MiamiDade County to be located at The Chamber Centre, 698 N. Homestead Blvd. The unique 21st Century, hightech school will be part of the MiamiDade Public School system with first year capacity to handle up to 400 students in three daily sessions. “We have been so pleased with the support we’ve received from the entire community and the enthusiasm among city leaders for providing parents an alternative school Mark Thimmig option,” said Mark –––––––––––– Thimmig, president and CEO of Mavericks in Education Florida LLC, the firm that currently opening five charter public high schools throughout Florida. “It’s heartwarming and encouraging to see such a strong desire to help kids in this community.”
The high-tech design of Maverick High School is geared toward offering students individualized learning that allows them to work at private computer terminals and advance at their own paces. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
Up to 25 teachers and staff members are expected to be hired by the time classes begin and online student enrollment is now available at <www.maverickshigh.com>. Employment applica-
tions also are available on the website or by calling 1-866-733-9409. According to Thimmig, the school offers an “out-of-the-box” approach to education which promises to increase Homestead’s graduation rate of 48.5 percent and offer students who are not succeeding in the traditional school environment an alternative setting and approach to successfully graduate with a high school diploma. “Our approach is three-fold,” Thimmig said. “First and foremost, we want all of our students to receive a state-recognized high school diploma by passing the FCAT and earning the required 24 credits. “Second, we will be providing students with employment preparation skills and helping them find jobs, and third, we will make sure each student has a plan for continuing education, college, trade school, military or fulltime employment.”
The high-tech design of Maverick High School is geared toward offering students individualized learning that allows them to work at private computer terminals and advance at their own paces. The latest in computer-based learning technology will be in place and curriculum will be directed by state-certified teachers. “We are thrilled to be part of the Homestead community and look forward to helping hundreds of students realize their dream of earning a high school diploma,” Thimmig said. Founded in 2007, Mavericks is an Education Service Provider (ESP) dedicated to designing, developing and implementing better ways to serve a large and rapidly increasing student population, that is not realizing success through a traditional education process and dropping out before earning a high school diploma.

Great Florida Bank teaches ACUPUNCTURE students value of saving The Point of Well-Being
Ana Maria Perez of Great Florida Bank teaches a course on saving at Highpoint Academy. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
BY TERRENCE BROWN Great Florida Bank is teaching third, fourth and fifth grade students at Highpoint Academy in west Miami-Dade County the importance of learning to save with a bank course that offers real world experience. It will lead to the establishment of the Highpoint Academy Savings Bank staffed by students. “By learning to save at a young age, kids gain an early appreciation for the basics of money management,” said Ana Maria Perez, market lead with Great Florida Bank, who started the program with three other bank associates. “Ultimately, we are teaching sound money management skills designed to last a lifetime.” Perez and her team have been teaching the students the basic principles of banking, including: deposits, withdrawals, interest rates, building credit. Students entering fifth grade in the fall who are interested in applying for a job as a “relationship banker” or “ambassador” at the Highpoint Academy Savings Bank were asked to fill out an application. Great Florida Bank associates then interviewed students. Parents of the students applying for the jobs were invited to join in and witness the interview process. Alicia A. Casanova, principal of Highpoint Academy, believes the program not only will encourage the students to save, but also teaches them real-world skills.
“We’re all very excited about this venture since our students are learning hands-on at an early age not only about the importance of saving money and how the banking system works, but also how to interview and apply for a job and then assume the responsibilities the job requires. These are important skills that will translate into any field the students decide to pursue,” she said. Here’s how the Highpoint Academy Savings Bank works: All students in grades 1-5 are encouraged to open a Great Goals Kids Savings Account. Parents have been asked to send a check payable to themselves in the minimum amount of $25 to open the savings account. Starting in the fall, students who have open accounts will be able to make deposits/withdrawals every Friday morning from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. A Great Florida Bank associate will be at the Highpoint Academy Savings Bank every Friday morning to teach and assist the student “relationship bankers” and “ambassadors.” “This program benefits our customers and our communities,” said Marilyn Orozco, a loan consultant with Great Florida Bank who recently taught one of the classes at the school. “We know that the earlier people learn the importance of sound money management, the better off they will be. Our goal is to create generations of savers.” For more information, visit the website at <www.greatfloridabank.com> or call 1-866-514-6900.

Boy Scout Troop 10 earns ‘Best Overall’ at Camporee BY CARYN TANIS BOREN Boy Scout Troop 10 from West Kendall won Best Overall Troop for the fourth year in a row during the recent Hurricane District Camporee. Winning the title involved multiple activities which all had designated point values, including a photo hunt competition which began a month prior to the Camporee. Clues were given for locations of significance throughout Miami-Dade County and Scouts had to determine the locations, then have a photo taken wearing their Scout uniform with an adult leader and holding a troop flag. Several organized outings also scored points from watching a movie to bowling a few games. Daytime activities at the Camporee involved a gateway competition, an ice cream eating contest and a water balloon catapult event where adult leaders were the targets. Evening competitions revolved around the Camporee theme of a Hawaiian luau, which included a skit and other events where Scouts were required to demonstrate skills such as first aid and knot tying.
Pictured are Boy Scout Troop 10 participants just before they boarded a charter bus to go to Camp Old Indian in Traveler’s Rest, SC, where they enjoyed fresh mountain air, camping, as well as canoeing, swimming, fishing and hiking. Summer camp is an Eagle requirement. Troop 10 meets weekly at the Central Presbyterian Church in West Kendall.

“Tell me about your business and I’ll tell you about mine.” That was the theme of the July 9 meeting of Cutler Bay Business Association when all those at the luncheon at the opportunity to give brief “commercials”. The networking group gathered for lunch at the Palmetto Bay Village Center. President Darryl Boyette made the information-sharing format available, in the face of the current tight economy that is affecting all the business owners. Glenn and Pilar Larssen, owners of Hard Surface Masters, visited for the first time and joined in with a description of their service business that uses special technology for cleaning tile floors. They were so impressed that they joined the organization, saying, “This is the perfect venue to showcase our new business.” Dee Hoult, another first-time visitor, told about her business, Applause Your Paws, that specializes in pet training. She acknowledged that the networking would help her business and finds CBBA to be a perfect fit for your business plan. Among other businesses that were highlighted in the free-flowing communication were Justo and Julie Rico, a husband-and-wife team who operate Rainbow Reproductions, a graphic design and printing firm; Susan Maarouf of MetLife and Herminio Perez, General Sales Manager of Mercedes-Benz of Cutler Bay. Darryl Boyette reported to the group on the successful start of the B.A.M. summer basketball program for middle schoolers, made possible by donations from CBBA members and volunteer work by both Miami-Dade police and CBBA members. The awards banquet for the players, parents, and supporting sponsors will be held in late July at the Palm Room of Palmetto Bay Village Center. See the B.A.M. web site: (www.BayAreaMentors.com). The next meeting will be at 11 a.m. August 13 at the Palmetto Bay Village Center. For reservations, check the CBBA web site (www.CBBA.biz) or call (305-609-1096, Vice-president, Cyndi Rogg).

Miami Civic Music Association announces 77th season lineup BY ROBERT HAMILTON The Miami Civic Music Association will begin its 77th season of concerts on Friday, Oct. 2, at 8 p.m., with the Frost School of Music Symphony Orchestra conducted by Thomas Sleeper. The featured soloist will be pianist Tian Ying in a performance of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5, E flat, Op. 73, the “Emperor.” Mr. Ying has been the winner of many prestigious awards, including high honors at the Eighth Van Cliburn International Competition and is well known for his eloquent, poetic, dramatically intense performances. He has appeared with orchestras and in solo recitals throughout the United States, Europe, China and the Far East. Civic’s second concert on Sunday, Jan. 24, at 4 p.m. will feature Tian Ying in a solo recital. The 11th annual Piano Gala on Sunday, Feb. 14, at 4 p.m., will feature Rosalina G. Sackstein, piano, with guest artists in a program of music by the great classical composers arranged for two pianos. Always an audience favorite, this annual event is a fundraiser for the Rosalina G. Sackstein Piano Scholarship Endowment at the Frost School of Music. On Sunday, Mar. 7, at 4 p.m., internationally recognized soprano Margarita De Arellano will make her first appearance with Civic. De Arellano is a graduate of the Frost School of Music and the Juilliard School and made her opera debut as Gilda in Rigoletto at the Prague State Opera. She has appeared in leading soprano roles in operas by Bellini,
Donizetti and Verdi with the Bayerische Staatsoper, Munich Opera and the Stuttgart Opera. Other performances include appearances with opera companies in Berlin, Vienna and Florence as well as the Seattle Opera in the United States. She has performed in concert with the Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic and the Israel Philharmonic. Her performances have received critical acclaim wherever she has appeared. A very special event, presented in cooperation with the Friends of Chamber Music, will feature four of the finest chamber musicians performing today. The ensemble includes Joseph Kalichstein, piano; Kyoko Takezawa, violin; Cynthia Phelps, viola, and William DeRosa, cello. They will perform on Sunday, May 2, at 4 p.m. The final performance of the season on Sunday, June 13, at 4 p.m., will be the annual Young Artist Debut concert. In February 2010, the Eighth National Chopin Piano Competition of the United States will take place at MiamiDade County Auditorium. This prestigious competition attracts talented young pianists from all over the United States and this concert will feature one of the most talented finalists in a solo recital. Caring families sought to host students from foreign countries BY PATRICIA LITTRELL
Because you have a choice
Pacific Intercultural Exchange (PIE) is looking for caring families to host high school students from various countries for the 2009-10 academic year. PIE asks local families to consider showing one of these foreign teens what American generosity is all about. Students from many countries have been staying with families all over the United States since August, and now a new group of international neighbors would like to add a little more to the community and leave with American passion, pride and sense of values. There is no such thing as a typical host family. Whether you are a single
parent, retired, have small children, teens, or no children at all, anyone can have a great experience hosting an exchange student. All students are prescreened. They speak English, have medical insurance, and their own spending money for any incidental costs. All these students require is a loving family to share their experience within our beautiful country. Help them learn the meaning of “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.” PIE is looking for host families in your area. Those who are interested are urged to contact Pacific Intercultural Exchange right away at 1-877-534-3144. Experience is not necessary, as an orientation and support will be provided.

Dodge Caliber has ‘techno’ design, functionality Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS The Dodge Caliber is an odd looking vehicle with its “techno” design, yet it has the functionality of three different vehicles — a station wagon, a hatchback and a minivan. The Caliber made its debut as a 2007 model, replacing the Neon, and little has changed for 2009, though the high-performance SRT4 model was added to the lineup last year. Four models are available, all with four-cylinder engines — SE, SXT, R/T and SRT4 — and either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.. The SE and SXT come with a 148-hp 1.8-liter engine (a 158hp 2.0-liter engine is an option for the SXT). The R/T gets a 172-hp 2.4-liter engine and the SRT4 comes with a 2.4liter, 285-hp turbocharged powerplant. As for transmissions, the 1.8 liter engine is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox; the 2.0 comes with a continuous-
ly variable automatic transmission (CVT); the 2.4 is available with the five-speed manual in the front-drive R/T, and the CVT in the all-wheel drive R/T; the SRT4 comes only with a six-speed manual gearbox. Caliber is a five-passenger, five-door vehicle and it does have some practicality in its design and function. The familiar Dodge crosshair grille and large flanking headlights dominate the front. The lower bumper separates the grille and headlights from a lower air intake and fog lamps. The side features a wedged beltline and bulging fenders, tires that fill up the wheelwells and longitudinal moldings with a chrome accent along the lower doors. The roofline arches from the base of the hood and flows over the side doors into the upright lower liftgate. The rear is accented by a short overhang and a steeply raked back window beneath a lipped spoiler. Oversize taillights jut from the fenders. On the inside, there is plenty of headroom in the front passenger compartment and the front seats are comfortable. There is plenty of cargo space and the folding rear seats (with an optional recline adjustment and fold-flat front pas-

senger seat) allow for even more hauling space and room for long items such as skis, surfboards or ladders. There’s even a cooler for the glove box to keep water bottles and canned drinks cold. New for 2009 are Uconnect Tunes and Uconnect GPS. Uconnect Tunes includes a 30-gigabyte hard drive for storing as many as 6,700 digital songs or photographs, and movies can be played on the dashboard navigation screen when the vehicle is in Park. Uconnect GPS combines the features of Uconnect Phone and Uconnect Tunes with navigation and real-time traffic. The system includes an
integrated voice recognition system and touch screen for easy operation. There’s also a drop-down stereo speaker in the liftgate that’s ideal for tailgate parties. Base pricing on the 2009 Dodge Caliber ranges from $14,000 for the SE model to $22,435 for the high-performance SRT4, though you might find those figures much lower in today’s environment.

You may have a partner or associate who has some inside information that will help you, but do be careful to make sure everything you do is legal. Leo - Romantic signals clear up dramatically this week. You are almost reading each other's minds all of a sudden. It could be that the challenges you have had lately have forced you to stop playing games with each other and you are both a lot happier.
Virgo - It will be even more difficult to concentrate this week because you'll be far more interested in playing or daydreaming than working or getting the family chores finished. Take the family out for a movie, it is a good time to enjoy a great flick or get out to a park.
Libra - You need to have a little fun right now. You may be drawn to art galleries,
theatres, and music stores right now. You want to get something to play with that sooths your soul and uplifts your mood. You may be given a spiritual book or self-help guide this week.
Scorpio - You will get plans, documents or information that will help you make those big changes you are planning in the old homestead. You and your partner have to come together on the biggest plans, make sure you both understand what it is you are committing to. Sagittarius - You will be able to communicate your ideas and feelings more forcefully and directly this week, and are likely to be much better received than the past two weeks, especially where it comes to close friends and siblings. You may feel a bit hyperactive this week. Capricorn - There is wonderful news heading your way about your finances, work and career. You had recent hints that something big and beautiful was headed your way and you are going to be hearing confirmation soon. That dream promotion could be right around the corner.
Aquarius - A massage session or a meditation retreat may seem like an exorbitant luxury, but yourself have those little treats you have been denying yourself. You will be able to work that much more effectively if you are relaxed, refreshed, and in command. Pisces - You may get an unusual or innovative insight during meditation or a relaxing moment this week. Write down the ideas that come to you this week, because they may have a lot of value for you later on, even though they might not make sense at the moment.

THERE’S A REASON THINGS ARE
MADE JUST FOR KIDS It’s a pretty big world out there, but the Miami Children’s Hospital Palmetto Bay Center is here to bring it down to size. Get the same quality care you’ve come to expect from the only hospital in South Florida exclusively for children, right in your neighborhood. From Early Steps, an early intervention program for infants and toddlers from birth to 36 months, to rehabilitation, to urgent care for life’s little emergencies, the pediatric specialists and staff at the MCH Palmetto Bay Center are here for your children.
