Hometown Harvest Bicycle Ride slated Nov. 15 BY GARY ALAN RUSE he Town of Cutler Bay’s Hometown Harvest Bicycle Ride is back, the third of the fall and spring bicycle tours that have taken place since the town’s incorporation. The popular event returns on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 8 a.m. The 10-mile bicycle ride winds its way through Cutler Bay and is designed to get residents outdoors for fresh air and exercise and a tour through the beauty of the town. Councilmember Peggy Bell, who organized the ride, is enthusiastic about this year’s event. “Though attendance has been great at both previous events, this one promises to be even better attended,” Bell said. “We now have a town bike group,

AROUND TOWN Yes, volunteers do make a difference. As you’ll read about elsewhere in this issue, it’s time for the Hometown Harvest Bicycle Ride again. It’s scheduled for Saturday, November 15th at 8:00 a.m. It is a 10 mile bicycle ride through Cutler Bay, according to Erika Gonzalez-Santamaria, Town Clerk. It is their third bicycle ride since incorporation. It starts at the Southland Mall parking lot closest to Caribbean Blvd. and ends up back at the mall after the 10 mile leg that goes through numerous Cutler Bay communities. The Police Dept. does the escort and provides a safety rodeo before the event commences. As to the volunteer matter, the good ladies of the Whispering Pines Womens Club will once again bake cookies for the riders to provide a refreshment break for all those folks. I don’t know if it’s appreciated as much as it should be, but that takes a lot of work, and it gets people involved in the community in an up-close and personal way that just has to bring folks together and maintain that “small town” feeling everyone talks about so much. So brava for them and

Over at Big Cheese I ran into Steve Bateman. He is looking dapper as ever and manages to stay in very good shape. Steve, a former Vice-Mayor of Homestead and who years ago was a Golden Gloves boxer, is married to the very patient and understanding Donna, who keeps him on the pathway of happiness and success. If you see Donna, please tell her that she is a saint. And couldn’t help but see Alan and Diane Schiller having a good time there at Big Cheese and, let’s see, South Miami Mayor Horace Feliu and Palmetto Bay Mayor Gene Flinn, Nick Poulos and real estate guru Chip Black were there, too, sharing some fellowship. Time running out for that small group of Killian Parkway residents to continue a protest against building the combination park-library at a former estate-zoned land parcel at the corner of S.W. 97th Avenue and S.W. 112th Street. Next official action: a public hearing is scheduled Thursday, December 4, at 9:30 a.m. in the County Commission chambers, 111 N.W. First Street, to act on a Department of

Planning and Zoning request to convert the previously recorded agreement requiring the 3.42-acre property to be developed with six residences to permit the location of a public library and park. UDB movement under pressure from political contributors R. Kenneth Bluh VIEWPOINT KENNETH’S COMMENTARY The perimeter of our community is under attack again. Lennar Corp., one of America’s largest builders, made application to expand west beyond the current Urban Development Boundary (UDB) and build homes and a commercial complex. The site, called “Parkland� and currently zoned “Agricultural,� is located on a 961-acre tract. The application seeks to modify the zoning to permit the construction of 6,941 residential units, 200,000 square feet of retail space, 100,000 square feet of medical offices, a 200-bed hospital, 550,000 square feet of industrial/flex space, three schools, a library, a fire station and a police station. The application process will last well into 2009 resulting in an approval, approval with modification or denial. On Lennar’s side, powerful real estate developers, who are heavy political campaign contributors to members of the

county commission, are joining forces to pressure the commission to say “yes.� Logic against the proposed UDB expansion: There still is plenty of vacant land within the UDB to build. Population growth in the county is down. We have thousands of unsold condos and foreclosed homes on the market with few buyers in sight. Lastly, and probably the biggest reason, is the lack of arterial roads, expressways, water and sewer services, schools; already stretched police and fire-rescue services — infrastructure inadequacies that we cannot afford to improve. Logic in favor of the UDB expansion: Lennar says the housing glut will be behind us by the time their homes are ready for delivery. There is a big profit in building a large number of homes and commercial properties in one location. Happily, two prominent real estate developers — Jorge Perez, chair, Related Group, and Armando Codina, chair, Flagler Development — are stating, without comment on the specifics of the Parkland project, that it is not the time to be expanding the UDB. The UDB was created to control “sprawling� expansion throughout the county. Currently, building west of the

UDB, which is between the UDB and the Everglades, is restricted to one family unit per five-acre parcel. To build west of the UDB requires approval from the county commission. This newly filed request by Lennar is opposed by the county mayor, the county’s planning department, the Tropical Audubon Society, environmental groups, and the press, who fear that once the UDB line is pushed west for one developer we will see the buffer between current development and the Everglades disappear. It’s the reason so many developers are supporting Lennar. A recent Miami Herald article said Parkland residents would be far from concentrations of employment — suggesting that it would take 48 minutes to drive from Parkland to downtown Miami. It takes more than 45 minutes to drive from East Kendall to downtown Miami at 8:30 in the morning. I would say it will be more like an hour and a half drive.

Lennar says that Parkland will have its own employment center and perhaps many residents will drive to Parkland for employment. This I sincerely doubt. Most still will be driving to Miami-Dade’s employment centers. Driving will be a nightmare. It will be years before any form of mass transit will serve Parkland, if ever! Live in Parkland, better to get a job in Naples, the drive time could be less. My opinion? Financial contributions to county commission political races give a better than even chance that, with some modifications, the expansion ultimately will be approved.

Letter to the Editor Island of Barbados marking 42 years of independence Barbados, the most easterly island in the Caribbean chain of islands, stretching from Florida on the North American mainland to the Guianas on the northern mainland of South America, stands in splendid isolation at Latitude 13 degrees N and Longitude 59 degrees 37 W. With 23 kilometers (14 miles) at its widest point and 34 kilometers (21 miles) long, it is a mere 416 square kilometers (166 square miles) in area. After the first English settlement at Holetown in 1627, Barbados remained a British colony until achieving independence from Britain on Nov. 30, 1966, under the then Premier, Errol Walton Barrow of the Democratic Labour Party. Mr. Barrow later became the island’s first Prime Minister. That first independence ceremony was accompanied by the raising of the Barbados National Flag and playing of the National Anthem for the first time. Nov. 30 is celebrated as Independence Day and is a national holiday in Barbados. The day begins with an elaborate and impressive parade and ceremony at the Garrison Savannah. However, celebrations run throughout November and include sports competitions, fairs, community events, and religious services. Barbados is a member of the Commonwealth. The British monarchy is represented in Barbados by the Governor General. The Hon. David Thompson, MP, of the Democratic Labour Party, assumed office on Jan. 16, 2008 as Barbados’ sixth Prime Minister.” As part of activities to celebrate Barbados’ 42nd Anniversary of Independence, the Consulate General of Barbados at Miami will be hosting a “Barbados Week” at its office located at 150 Alhambra Circle, Suite 1000, Coral Gables, during the period Nov. 17-21, from 3 to 7 p.m. each day. During that time, the Consulate will be opened to the public. One taste of her food and you soon realize she is from India. Born and raised in India, Ayesha D’Mello has a passion for cooking. She has learned traditional home cooking in India. Her philosophy is to cook quick, easy, delicious and healthy Indian meals, and her recipes are simple to follow and include ingredients that are readily available in Miami. Ayesha has a way to take the most difficult and complicated dishes and create ones that are quick and easy to prepare. “The most fulfilling part of teaching Indian cooking is when I get feedback from my students who tell me that they went home that same afternoon and made the dishes, and they realized how easy, delicious and healthy the dishes were to prepare,” Ayesha said. “Better yet, I love it when they put on their creative hats and come up with some great dishes using my recipes as the base.” Her passion for cooking was evident as early as age 15. “My mom was out of town. My dad’s

friend had invited us over to spend Sunday evening with them. Typically when we go to visit, we prepare some food and take it over. My Dad was worried as my mom was not around to prepare some food. “I decided to jump in and do something.” She said. “I looked in the freezer and there was some lamb. So I decided to cook a curry for the first time without any recipe to follow. To my amazement, and according to my dad, the curry came out better than my mom’s. My dad was so proud of me. His friends enjoyed it thoroughly. From that point onwards there was no stopping with getting my hands dirty and being creative with cooking.” Although she has earned undergraduate degrees in computer science and accounting as well as an MBA, her enthusiasm to impart knowledge of Indian culinary skills is clearly seen by the way she shares the spice secrets of her homeland. She conducts regularly scheduled Indian cooking classes at Ayesha’s Kitchen in Kendall and also organizes private cooking classes for birthdays, clubs, parties and special events where she customizes the menu for the event. In addition, she provides catering services. She also has taught at Florida International

Rock ‘n’ Roll theme set for Baptist Hospital Ball BY BARBARA MOORE Nostalgia, glitter, and rock and roll will bring down the house during the 30th anniversary of the Baptist Hospital Ball on Saturday, Nov. 22, 6:30 p.m., at the Doral Golf Resort and Spa. Dancing around the theme of “Rock ‘n’ Royalty,” the milestone event represents the first informal “jeans and jewels” gala affair for Baptist Hospital. The evening will feature two Baptist Hospital physician-led bands. Ziffer 6, a band fronted by Jack Ziffer, PhD, MD, will play covers of classic ’70s and ’80s rock-and-roll tunes. Children to hear from poet Nikki Giovanni at Book Fair BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD

Award winning poet and activist Nikki Giovanni will be at the Miami International Book Fair Saturday, Nov. 15, to speak to children about her new poetry anthology Hip Hop Speaks to Children: A Celebration of Poetry With a Beat. The book includes 51 poems from 42 poets and performers including singer and actress Queen Latifah. Hip Hop Speaks to Children was No. 3 on the New York Times Children’s Bestseller list the first week of November. “I’m proud of it,” Giovanni said. “Hip hop is such a cultural force. People have not dealt with the antecedents.” She said she wanted to go back and show how hip hop relates to opera and other forms of music. In the book, she says, “opera shared the stories of the peoNikki Giovanni ple, like hip hop does today. Opera was how the simple truths about the lives of everyday people were told, right in the public square so you knew they were real.” She also said not to be fooled by the rap videos that exaggerate and show bad behavior. Those videos are not the real hip hop because they could not be made in the public square. “In the black community you give a definite shout out to the holiness preacher,” she said. “The slaves weren’t allowed to read or write or have books. They had to talk to them in a cadence with a beat.” Giovanni said the book carries a message that she thinks is joyful. She worked with an advisory board comprised of hip hop poet Willie Perdomo; Tony Medina, a Howard University professor, and Michele Scott, a music specialist. “We cast a wide net. We had 300 poems,” she said. “We kept bringing it down and bringing it down. Once we

had the essence, we put out a call to illustrators. We were looking for something a little more edgy.” Illustrators Kristen Balouch, Michele Noiset, Jeremy Tugeau, Alicia Vergel de Dios and Damian Ward all contributed to the book. The book includes a CD that features some of the artists that created the works while others are interpreted by other artists. Poets such as Nikki Grimes, Eloise Greenfield and James Berry also are featured. Giovanni is a well-known poet, writer, activist and educator. She was born in Knoxville, TN, and now is a University Distinguished Professor at Virginia Tech. She will be at the Book Fair on Saturday, Nov. 15, at the Freedom Tower, Biscayne Boulevard and Sixth Street, at 12:30 p.m. Also speaking are Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson touting their hilarious new book Science Fair. BY RON BEASLEY More than 50 young patients from Baptist Children’s Hospital showed up at Homestead-Miami Speedway on a bright Saturday morning in early November to take part in the inaugural Rides ’n’ Smiles event hosted by the Southern Automotive Media Association (SAMA). The day at the track allowed young patients suffering from such illnesses as cancer, diabetes, brain injuries, Crohn’s and Colitis to ride in an exotic car and get an up-close look at the speedway’s 2.3-mile road course, while experiencing the thrill of being on an auto race track. Auto manufacturers provided more than a dozen beautiful cars, including a Chevrolet Corvette, Audi R8, Porsche Cayman S, Mazda RX-8, Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG,

Challenger and Viper from Dodge, Ford Mustang Bullitt and a Lexus ISF. Brett David from Lamborghini Miami brought along a trio of exotic Lamborghinis. Even the Jaguar XJR10 that won the 1991 Miami Grand Prix was on display. SAMA members, led by veteran auto racer and television broadcaster Bill Adam, drove the cars for their young passengers. At the end of the day, everyone agreed that the event lived up to its name and put smiles on a lot of young faces, and helped them forget about their illnesses for a day. “The day was a huge success,” Adam said. “The things that we set out to achieve — smiles for everyone — were endless and genuine, and the heartwarming feelings that we all had as we left made all of the effort worthwhile.

LET’S TALK CARS The 2009 Journey is Dodge’s entry in the midsize crossover SUV class. It’s sporty, rides and handles well, has a nice interior design with lots of room, and has plenty of entertainment options; all in all, a nice car for a young family. The Journey also is nicely styled. It has the characteristic Dodge crosshair grille and a creased beltline that begins at the top of the headlights, rises to the rear and encircles the vehicle. The roofline curves slightly down and the wheel arches are decidedly pronounced. The taillights wrap around the sides and extend into the upwardopening lift gate. Journey rides on the Dodge Global D platform, which is a stretched, widened and beefed-up version of the Global C platform used by the Dodge Avenger

and Chrysler Sebring. Journey is available in three trim levels — SE, SXT and R/T. The SE is front-wheel drive only, while the SXT and R/T models are offered with FWD or all-wheel drive. The base SE model comes with a 173hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. The SXT and R/T models have a 3.5liter, 235-hp V-6 under the hood, wedded to a six-speed automatic transmission with the AutoStick manual shift. The V-6 has good power for aroundtown commuting and allows for towing loads up to 3,500 pounds. Miami Vintage Clothing Show promotes re-use, recycling BY LEE STEPHENS Going green to help slow global warming is not limited to construction and energy. Even the clothing we wear can promote conservation when we look to vintage fashion. Miamians will have a chance to see how vintage clothing and cutting edge fashion go hand in hand at the Miami Vintage Clothing & Accessories Show & Sale taking place on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 15 and 16, at the Woman’s Club of Coconut Grove, 2985 S. Bayshore Dr. “Instead of recreating what we already have, why don’t we re-use and re-work the original pieces?” said Sheffield MacIntyre, show founder and owner of Back-In-Style.com, an Internet vintage store. “Not only is it better for the environment, but the clothes are also of better quality and better made, and often a lot less expensive.” Contemporary designers often look to vintage pieces for inspiration. Wearing vintage clothing is good for the environment in a number of ways. It recycles the embedded energy that it took to make the garment in the first place, like making the fabric, dying it, cutting the pattern, constructing the garment and adding details. Re-using

clothing helps cut back some of the estimated 4 million tons of textiles are sent to municipal landfills each year which produce methane gas, contributing to global warming. The Woman’s Club of Coconut Grove is sponsoring a special Charity Preview Party on Friday, Nov. 14, 7-9 p.m., offering attendees first selection of merchandise, as well as entertainment and complimentary food and drink.
