Book about museum created in school’s magnet program Shenandoah Middle School teacher Terri Herrera and consultant Lea Nickless explain the book-making process to student participants.

BY LEE STEPHENS The Coral Gables Museum will present Building a Dream, a book created by students from the Shenandoah Middle School Museum Magnet Program, on Thursday, May 21, 6:30 p.m., in the Courtyard at Books and Books, 265 Aragon Ave. Throughout the school year, the eighth grade students, under the supervision of teacher Terri Herrera, researched the early development of Coral Gables and George Merrick’s vision for the city. They learned of the city’s architectural and cultural heritage through a series of field trips, interviews and presentations organized by the museum. The students’ work has culminated in the publication of Building a Dream, a book that they created with the assistance of book design consultant Lea Nickless. “These students have been an absolute joy to work with,” said Christine Rupp, Coral Gables Museum’s

director of operations. “Their energy, creativity and enthusiasm for this project have been outstanding.” In addition to the publication of the book, the goal of the project was to teach students the importance of historic preservation and thoughtful urban planning. The reception at Books and Books will feature the student authors and contributors, teachers, school administrators and city officials. Refreshments will be served. Please RSVP to <chris@coralgablesmuseum.org> or call 305-9103996. The Building a Dream project was generously funded by a grant from The Villagers. The Coral Gables Museum, 285 Aragon Ave., opening in late 2010, will celebrate the Civic Arts with a focus on architecture, urban design and planning, sustainable development and historic and environmental preservation. Community mourns passing of beloved teacher, volunteer BY MARK SELL Karen F. Rossman — a longtime teacher, counselor and advocate for people with disabilities and community volunteer — died on May 3 at her home in Coral Gables after a battle with heart disease. She was 62. Mrs. Rossman is survived by her devoted and loving husband of 37 years, Stephen F. Rossman, of the Miami law firm Rossman Baumberger Reboso Spier & Connolly PA, three children, four grandchildren and a sister. Born in New York on June 22, 1946, to Karl and Amelia Franzblau, she received her BA in Education at Queens College, and her MA in Counseling from the University of Miami. She met her husband in Sept. 1970 while teaching elementary school for Dade County Public Schools and they married on July 4, 1971, in Miramar. She later became a vocational rehabilitation counselor helping to train disabled individuals for employment, thereby assisting hundreds of people to get on their feet. She retired in 1976 when children came along, but remained committed to her vocation as a tireless volunteer. Her passion for teaching and service left a lasting mark on her family, friends and countless others, opening doors for people with disabilities and those without homes. She was active for nearly 30 years as a volunteer and fundraiser with the Children’s Home Society of Florida and with Easter Seals in Miami-Dade. Mrs. Rossman adored — and was adored by — her family and friends, and there was nothing she wouldn’t do for them. She was a caregiver to her mother who died six years ago at the age of 92. Since raising three now-grown children, Karen and Steve have been raising a granddaughter who is now a beautiful 9-year-old third grader. Besides being with her beloved family, she loved travel, reading, puzzles and tennis. She was an active tennis player at Royal Palm Tennis Club in Pinecrest and was at various times treasurer and captain of the team. “Karen was a devoted friend and a caring, selfless daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother,” said Molly Baumberger, Karen’s friend of nearly 40 years and wife of Chuck Baumberger, Steve’s law partner of 35 years and friend of 45 years. “She had a wonderful sense of humor and fun,” Baumberger said. “Her values were those that you respect and admire. She was also a strong and optimistic per-

Karen F. Rossman ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– son who set an incredible example of how to handle tough times. Karen was not to be underestimated. No matter what she was going through, she, along with Steve, persevered. “Karen had a lot of ‘best’ friends; she had that attraction surrounding her that touched other people. That sweetness and concern for others is going to be carried through in her children and grandchildren.” Karen was a member of the Beaux Arts fundraising group, organized to raise money for the University of Miami’s Lowe Art Museum. She was active with the Palmer Trinity Parents Association, and was co-editor of the school’s newsletter. In addition to her husband, Steve, Karen is survived by their son, Adam, and his wife, Ally, of Aventura; daughters, Karly of Cutler Bay and Rebecca of West Palm Beach, and grandchildren Danielle, Karina, Jacob and Gabriella. Karen is survived by her sister, Andrea Peska of Tamarac; her mother-in-law, Sylvia Rossman of Kendall, and nieces, nephews, cousins and hundreds of friends. Services took place on Tuesday, May 5, at Temple Beth Am in Pinecrest. Funeral arrangements were handled by Levitt Weinstein Memorial Chapel in Aventura. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Easter Seals South Florida, the Temple Beth Am Day School Scholarship Fund or the Temple Judea Pre School. Her educational pursuits demonstrate an early love for children and a desire to help those youngsters with special needs. In fact, Cartaya is a State of Florida-certified educator in the following areas: mentally handicapped, varying exceptionalities and prekindergarten through grade 12 Mentally Handicapped Endorsement. She received a bachelor’s degree in Special Education from Florida International University where she graduated summa cum laude and a master’s degree in Special Education with a specialization in Curriculum Design from Columbia University Teachers College. Always thirsting for knowledge, Cartaya currently is working on her Educational Specialist degree in Educational Leadership and Administration. At work, Cartaya is responsible for overseeing all school programs including all operational issues at both facilities. She serves as a member of and link

between faculty members and the school’s board of directors and also is a liaison between the school and the community. Cartaya adores the children with whom she works and often is seen putting in 12-hour days in a dedicated effort to raise funds needed for the school. In fact, the new 20,000-squarefoot campus opening in June was Cartaya’s brainchild. The project nearly is complete, under budget and on time, and she raised almost all the money herself through private donors. In this economy, that speaks volumes for her devotion to these children. Her service to the community is reflected in the progress the students at the Learning Experience School achieve year in and year out. With Cristina Cartaya’s commitment to special needs children, our community is blessed with a resource that has and will help so many children now and in the future. Cartaya shares her success with a dedicated staff and, one can be sure, a supportive family is included in that mix.

Florida Federation of Garden Clubs honors Betsy Adams with award

Pictured (l-r) are award recipient Betsy Adams, 2008-09 Garden Club president Donna Box, and past presidents Rosita Perez and Nita Norman. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

BY ROSALIND MOORE Betsy Adams of the Coral Gables Garden Club has been presented the Leadership Award by the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs for her creative accomplishments in enhancing the beauty of the City of Coral Gables. This high honor is rarely given, only if the state organization finds a person who has helped to greatly improve his or her community. Her projects continue the desires of George Merrick, founder of Coral Gables, who wanted to establish an elegant entry at all the main streets coming into the city. He began construction in the early 1920s with arched entrances, reminiscent of the old VenetianMediterranean style, that were bordered with beautiful landscaping. After the Stock Market Crash in 1929 followed by the Great Depression, Merrick was unable to complete this muchdesired project. When Adams became president of the Coral Gables Garden Club she researched the background of Coral Gables and was influenced by Merrick’s unfilled wishes for elegant entrances. Since one of the founding members of the 1925 established Garden Club was

Eunice Merrick, wife of George Merrick, it seems appropiate that George Merrick’s wishes are continuing to be honored. In 1990, Betsy began a major project for the club, Adopt an Entrance, to develop entries. Now three Mediterranean-style entrances with beautiful landscaping, just as Merrick envisioned, have been added in Coral Gables. They are: Coral Way at Red Road dedicated in 1991, Miracle Mile at Douglas Road city entrance dedicated in 1997, and the most recent one flanking the doublewide Ponce de Leon Boulevard at SW Eight Street dedicated in 2008. Another project for Adams was creating a statue of George Merrick. She had observed other statues in the city but none of its founder. Also the result of Adopt an Entrance, a heroic 12-foot high bronze commemorative statue of George Merrick, mounted on a six-foot high Florida Keystone base, was dedicated in 2006. This statue has become a “trademark” image for the city. The Coral Gables Garden Club raised $1.2 million for these missions. Coral Gables Garden Club won top state awards because of the Adopt an Entrance projects.

Among the attendees were hundreds of alumni from the past five decades, current and past faculty members, and current and alumni parents. The night was all about socializing, dancing, reminiscing and fun, but most of all it was about celebrating Columbus’ rich history and tradition for excellence. Several former CCHS principals and many other former and present faculty members attended including Br. Hugh Andrew, Br. Edmund Sheehan, Br. Patrick

McNamara, Br. Patrick McNulty and Dr. Manuel Guerra who celebrated his 92nd birthday that night. A video was played that contained archival photographs and heartfelt interviews from many alumni and teachers who also were present at the gala including: Carter Burrus and John Roche (former teachers), alumni Carlos Gimenez, Bob Linfors, Pedro “Joe” Greer, Rafael Penalver, and the Mas Brothers (Jorge, Juan Carlos, and Jose), as well as Marist Brothers Kevin Handibode and Michael Brady. The video is now available for purchase through the school’s website along with the CCHS history book, titled 50 Years Exploring, that was written by Br. Eugene and John Lynskey (Class of ’78).

Hero Martial Arts teaches traditional Tae Kwon Do Because you have a choice

Luis Cocco teaches traditional and Olympic style Tae Kwon Do at Hero Martial Arts, located at 17049 S. Dixie Hwy. “We have something for everyone,” Cocco said. “We start at age 3 and we go all the way up. Right now my range is from 3 to 50.” The school already has an expansive schedule and can accommodate more adults. “We have six classes a day,” he said. “We also offer a few classes Saturday mornings and I’m offering a women’s only self defense class twice a week in the mornings, on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:15 to 10:15.” Cocco is a sixth degree black belt. “Black belts in Tae Kwon Do go to ninth degree. Fourth is like a master’s degree, fifth is like a doctorate,” he said. Cocco has taught physical education and martial arts at several community centers, including the Dave and Mary Alper Jewish Community Center in Kendall, for the past 10-12 years. He also has worked at private schools such as Temple Samu-El, Temple Beth Am and Bet Breira. In fact, he was the aftercare director at Bet Breira for several years. At the same time he is running his own school, Cocco is working on a degree in exceptional student education. He only has about a year to go before graduation. Although it has been a struggle juggling college classes and opening his gym, he said he loves having his own school. “The school is incredible. We offer a lot of services. I have 34 classes a week.

We do different fundraisers, and different charitable events. We do competitions. Our kids continue to excel. We’re trying to prepare for the Junior Olympics and U.S. Nationals.” Tae Kwon Do is an official Olympic sport and those who place in the top four at the nationals can go to the Olympic team trials or to the Pan American Games or the World Championships. “Our kids are gearing up and preparing,” he said. “We have a great group and a great program.” While they are not yet ready, going to the nationals is the eventual goal. He has a number of students who are close to a black belt now and next year he expects to have several students who could be eligible for U.S. Nationals. At the same time Cocco works with kids who could go on to the Olympics, he also teaches martial arts to special needs students. “We have one class dedicated on Saturdays to special needs students,” he said. “If I have an autistic child, depending on what level of autism, he may be able to participate in my regular program. “At the end of the day, martial arts is what I do and what I love to do, and what I will do. I’m not going to stop running my school,” he said, adding that at the same time, he loves working with special needs kids. “The class on Saturdays is by nature very small. It’s something I love to do; if we can get more kids enrolled, we might be able to dedicate a few more hours a week.” For more information about Hero Martial Arts, call 305-232-4376.

Charitable giving offers tax benefits John Molkentin MONEY MATTERS Through charitable gift giving, you can show appreciation to charities you admire while receiving tax savings and other benefits. To help you start thinking about developing a strategy, here is some general information about philanthropic gift-giving. Giving to charities — Most charitable gifts also provide you with a current year income tax deduction. There are several types of charitable beneficiaries, including public charities, pooled income funds, private foundations, donor-advised funds and Charitable Remainder Trusts. Charitable remainder tr usts — One effective and popular choice for individuals who wish to leave a lasting legacy to their favorite charity, but also reap vari-

ous financial benefits, is the charitable remainder trust. In exchange for a future gift to charity, the charitable remainder trust provides you with several major tax and economic benefits. A charitable remainder trust allows you to: • Defer capital gains taxes • Increase diversification and cash flow • Receive a current-year federal income tax deduction • Reduce future estate tax liabilities Remember, a charitable remainder trust is irrevocable. Assets in the trust eventually pass to charity, not to your family. You should work with your tax and legal advisors so that a charitable remainder trust, or any other gift-giving strategy, fits into your overall estate plan. If it does, you could potentially enjoy significant tax and economic benefits, as well as leave a lasting legacy to your favorite charity.

Wine event raises funds for the Family Resource Center

BY BETH COHEN In honor of Child Abuse Awareness Month, Crown Wine & Spirits near The Falls recently hosted a Wine and Food Tasting event to raise funds and friends for the Family Resource Center of South Florida, a leading child welfare agency in Miami. The event raised awareness about child abuse and neglect, and encouraged the support of children and families in need. More than 40 people attended the tasting that included approximately 20 different wines, four tables featuring a spirit with appropriate “mixers,” artisan cheeses, meats and the like. Ernie Dalvisio, a Crown Wine & Spirits chef, gave a cooking demonstration and a wine connoisseur was at each table to educate attendees about each featured wine. One of the highlights of the night was

prominent Miami attorney Mark Tobin, who introduced his own line of fine wines from Mattebella Vineyards. The wine label currently produces three wines, two red and one white. A fourth wine, a French provencial style rosé, will be introduced in the summer of 2009. The Family Resource Center is driven by the principle that nothing is more fundamental to a community than the safety and well being of its children. Its goal is to prevent and change dysfunctional parent/ child interaction patterns, promote positive self-concepts, and build healthy relationships to prevent child abuse and neglect through family support, crisis intervention, housing location, family preservation, parent education and counseling. For more information about the Family Resource Center, visit online at <www.frcflorida.org>.

Jimmy Johnson finds second home in Florida Keys BY ROBERT HAMILTON The Big Chill (now aptly called Jimmy Johnson’s Big Chill at Fisherman’s Cove) is sporting an inviting new theme to entice both residents and tourists alike: “Come Chill Out with JJ.” “The convenience of having a place to play just a few miles or so from where I sleep was a perfect find,” Johnson said. “And not only that, they’re allowing me to make it even more perfect.” With the championship coach’s astute input, The Big Chill is now undergoing big improvements. The new Jimmy Johnson’s Big Chill is emerging with enhanced indoor/outdoor waterfront dining, JJ’s Sports Bar, Raw Bar, Tiki Bar and a Pool and Cabana Club. This open-to-the-public waterfront dining and entertainment facility is having its grand opening party on Memorial Day weekend starting on Friday, May 22, through Monday, May 25, with JJ and friends in attendance, of course. On Friday night, Jimmy will be hosting a poolside VIP party event with his friends. During the off-season when Johnson is not chatting it up on Sundays for Fox Sports, he’ll be putting on his flip flops, berthing his boat, and entertaining his friends somewhere within the confines of the Big Chill at Fisherman’s Cove. In addition to the Big Chill, Jimmy Johnson’s Fisherman’s Cove is an exclusive Private Residence Club located on the property. The club is offering exclusive deeded ownership in six luxurious $2-plus-million threebedroom residences to a total of only 48 fortunate own-

ers — complete with waterfront resort amenities, including The Big Chill — for a fraction of the price, approximately $299,000. Jimmy Johnson’s Fisherman’s Cove is

making vacation home ownership irresistible again. Owners enjoy virtually unlimited vacations in the unique private residences, subject only to the club’s generous and flexible reservation policies. And residents will have exclusive use of their own boat to go fishing, diving, or sunset cruising. Digital Capital International Sales Group, exclusive sales and marketing partner for Fisherman’s Cove, is very excited about the change. “I believe the establishment will quickly become a destination for years to come; there is nothing like it in the Florida Keys,” said Phil Perko, president. They not only welcome Johnson’s hands-on participation in the redesign of Fisherman’s Cove and The Big Chill, but his invaluable aid in greeting potential Fisherman’s Cove owners and Big Chill customers whenever he is at the resort. “Our owners loved the place before, but now with Jimmy they love it more. He brings an enormous amount of positive energy that is contagious to everyone around him,” said Rich Cipriano, vice president and broker. For sales information, call Cipriano at 305 608-1690 or send email to <ciprianor@digitalcapitalgroup.com>. VW Routan is derived from Chrysler Town & Country Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS Volkswagen’s new 2009 Routan is a chip off the old Chrysler block. It’s VW’s first minivan since the ill-fated EuroVan six years ago and is derived from Chrysler’s Town & Country vehicle, with some notable adaptations — it has a different interior, a Volkswagen exterior and a stiffer suspension. The seven-passenger Routan should appeal to American families, even though it lacks some of the features offered in the Town & Country. For example, the popular Stow ’n Go and Swivel ’n Go seating have been eliminated in the Routan because VW designers opted to make them plusher and more comfortable; thus they don’t fit into the floorboard storage areas. However, the third-row seats do fold into the floor, and the second-row seats can be

removed to create a flat load floor and good hauling space. The Routan is offered in three models — S starting at $24,700, SE at $29,600 and SEL at $33,200 — with two engine choices, both from Chrysler: a 197 hp, 3.8-liter V-6 and a 253 hp, 4.0liter V-6. The 3.8 engine (16/23 mpg) provides a nice urban driving experience, while the 4.0 engine (17/25 mpg) has a bit more power and is better suited for highway driving. Both engines are mated to a standard six-speed automatic transmission. The Routan is easily identified as a Volkswagen by the stylized front grille and large VW logo, and other exterior treatments. The interior is comfortable and detailed, with quality materials, beautiful textures and rich colors. And there are many functional features, including a conversation mirror, rear seat entertainment system with two nine-inch screens for second and third row passengers, touch screen navigation with 30 GB JoyBox Multi-Media Entertainment system, dual power sliding doors with power windows, power fold third-row seating and 13 cup hold-

ers. Remote keyless entry with remote vehicle start system is an option, and there are standard 12V power outlets and an available 115V AC outlet for powering up phones, MP3 players and game consoles. Routan also comes with many safety features, including standard front and side curtain airbags. Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP) — standard on all 2009 Volkswagens — and

hydraulic brake assist add an extra level of safety to the Routan. Also available are High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights for improved visibility and an ultrasonic rear-park assist.

Ron Beasley is the automotive editor for Miami’s Community Newspapers. He may be contacted by calling 305-662-2277, ext. 261, or by addressing email correspondence to <LetsTalkCars@aol.com>.

Can you hear conversations, but not understand the words clearly? Does it sound like others are mumbling? This could be the first indication of hearing loss. As people begin to lose their hearing, volume does not necessarily decrease, like lowering a radio. It actually feels more like listening through a broken speaker, where you can hear but not understand what was said. To make matters worse we may lose more volume in some frequencies than others causing conversations to sound muffled and difficult to follow. Dr. Joseph K. Duran can help you understand your hearing loss and determine if hearing aids are right for you. Select the most appropriate technology for your lifestyle with the help of our exclusive “Choice Fitting Program “. Our program takes into account the for main factors that go into selecting the right hearing aid for your needs:
