Granada Bridge to get aesthetic makeover BY MARIA ROSA HIGGINS FALLON
Gables Great
nlookers from land and sea in Coral Gables will see a noticeable change at the Granada Bridge over the already picturesque Coral Gables-Mahi Waterway. The concrete bridge that crosses over the Mahi Waterway between Alfonso Avenue and South Alhambra Circle will get a new look, thanks to a public/private partnership that involves the neighborhood and the help of community donations. “Several neighbors approached me about aesthetically enhancing the bridges in the city,” said Coral Gables Vice Mayor Bill Kerdyk Jr., who presented the project to his colleagues on the city commission in March. After getting the initial approval from city leaders, several meetings between residents and city staff were conducted to talk about the logistics of the project. A key part of the discussions was funding, because $20,000-$25,000 would be needed to prepare the bridge and apply the multiple layers of mineral paints

BY LARRY M. NOLAN The Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce celebration of “Tomorrow’s Leaders Today” commenced on May 21 at The Biltmore Hotel with the announcement of Carlos Garcia, partner with a prominent Coral Gables law firm and an adjunct professor at the University of Miami, as the third annual Rising Star Award recipient. Garcia is heavily involved in the community in various civic and charitable organizations. He is on the board of directors of the Kiwanis Club of Little Havana, Zoological Society of Florida, Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, Friends of WLRN, board of advisors of Great Florida Bank and Mercy Hospital Foundation (Ambassadors). “When I first found out that I was a finalist for this award I was ecstatic,” Garcia said. “It is a true honor to be in the company and class of my fellow finalists. When my name was called as the winner, all I could think about is how lucky I am to be associated with my firm and all of the organizations I am involved with in the community. “I am extremely proud to be this year’s recipient of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce Rising Star Award and it is something that I will always be proud of and think of fondly,” Garcia added.
The event, which took place this year during May’s Good Morning Coral Gables Breakfast, was spearheaded by the chamber’s 20/30 Group. “The Rising Star Award is a unique opportunity for hard-working young professionals who excel in both their work and philanthropy to be recognized,” said Naida Torres, co-chair of the 20/30 Group. “In the past year, I have found that being named a Rising Star has many rewards, both personal and professional,” said Jean-Pierre Bado, 2008 Rising Star Award winner and 2009 Rising Star Award judge. “Part of the award consists of professional career-coaching services; I was very happy to donate these to a deserving University of Miami entrepreneurship student. Additionally, I have come to know many fellow chamber members whose friendship and mentorship have become invaluable.” Judges of the event were Janice B. Gonzalez, president and CEO of JBG Communications; Patricia O’Connell, vice president and managing broker of EWM Realtor’s Coral Gables Office, and Bado, vice president with the Citi Private Bank. The Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce is a 1,500-member, not-forprofit business association with a mission to foster and enhance the economic interests and quality of life in the Coral Gables community.

Junior Orange Bowl plans strategy at board retreat Gloria Burns GLORIA’S GAB The Junior Orange Bowl Committee recently conducted a board retreat at the Coral Gables Library with president Mar ti Bueso and the board setting a strategy for the future. Coral Gables Chamber president Mark Trowbridge served as an excellent facilitator who brought fun to a serious goals-setting day despite a busy schedule of his own. Trowbridge, of course, is preparing with his chamber board and staff for Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce’s own Goals Conference on June 25 and 26 at The Biltmore Hotel. Due to concerns about the economy, chair-elect Sarah Ar tecona elected to reduce the cost of the conference. It promises to be a short conference packed with good programs and very affordable. For those who have not yet signed up for the conference, call the chamber at 305 446-1657. GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club conducted an annual fifth grade graduation party for F.S. Tucker Elementary students on May 29 at the Woman’s Club clubhouse. Students, dressed in their finest attire, celebrated with the teachers and principal Annette DeGoti,
who announced and congratulated students on their marked improvement in FCAT scores. Club members Linda Har twell and Debra Adam were presented with a special gift from the school for their support. Several students entertained the crowd including V ictoria Diaz on trumpet, as well as Alex Blandin on acoustic guitar. Ana Sanchez, Mercel Ellison and Shakur Cooper read their original poems to a very appreciative audience. Before the dancing began, club members helped serve plates of great spaghetti and meatballs after which the fifth graders made ice cream sundaes for dessert. On Thursday, May 28, The Learning Experience School, the only school in Miami for students from birth to adulthood with mild-to-moderate developmental disabilities, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony and donor party to celebrate the opening of the the new $2 million One United Campus. The school’s new 20,000-square-foot campus combines their three previous locations all “under one roof” into a centralized campus in South Miami. More than 75 guests attended the reception during which they were given a tour of the new facility. The program also included the formal ribbon-cutting and remarks from guest speaker U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen. Bacardi generously sponsored this ribbon cutting and donor reception. Commerce Connection Exploring the global marketplace – Colombia Es Pasión! BY MARK A. TROWBRIDGE President & CEO Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce
This past month, the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce and Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce led a joint trade mission to Colombia. Twenty-six delegates participated in this business development mission as we visited three cities in Colombia while targeting various industries of import to their growing economy. These sectors included architects, accountants, attorneys specializing in trade issues, franchising, and immigration, travel and tourism, technology, and more. The interest from the business communities in Bogota, Barranquilla, Cartagena and the State of Caldas were extremely high and the opportunities significant. Our meetings in Bogota were arranged by the US Commercial Service in Colombia – a global organization that helps represent the interests of US companies abroad by making formidable business connections for them. We met with experts on how to set up a business in Colombia, trade regulations, HR practices, and other business requirements. We also had the privilege of attending a reception in our honor at the home of US Ambassador William Brownfield. A career diplomat, Ambassador Brownfield is well regarded in Colombia and has done significant work to draw our two countries, and economies, closer together during his tenure. Some of you may ask why Colombia? Colombia has seen strong, positive GDP growth over the past few years and the strategic location, educated workforce and well-developed industrial capacity make Colombia an ideal partner for us to explore further business opportunities. Colombians are used to doing business in the US given the proximity of our two countries and the long-term presence of US firms in the Colombian marketplace. In Barranquilla, we were received by
the Mayor’s office and met with the Governor of the State of Atlantico, Eduardo Verano de la Rosa. The primary business focus of this coastal part of the country is their port. They have set up numerous free trade zones along the Magdalena River and expanded their port to accommodate more significant trade traffic from the interior of the country. Products of importance to the US include coffee, flowers, steel, and petroleum. We concluded our mission in Cartagena, the first Sister City of Coral Gables, established fifty-two years ago. Our Mayor, Don Slesnick, joined the delegation for the official visit as we were received by Mayor Judith Pineda and their Chamber of Commerce. Again, much like the other two cities we visited, Cartagena is a dynamic, bustling business community, recognized as a major tourist destination for cruise ship and leisure travelers. It is easy to understand why Colombia es pasion. The people are educated, passionate, motivated and friendly. And they are so happy – happy to host American business leaders and happy to tell the world the story of how they have really turned their country around. Gone are the fears for your safety, the image of drug lords and coca fields, kidnapping and the idea that there are no opportunities in Colombia. In a community like Coral Gables, where we have nearly 200 international businesses, a university that was founded to be internationally focused, and nearly twenty Consular and trade offices, we are well positioned to do business with our friends in Colombia. And our Chamber continues to build upon this strategic position by leading these missions, promoting international business, and finding ways to help our local businesses tap into these new markets. I hope we will see you at our next International Affairs event on Thursday, May 7th at Novecento Coral Gables at 6pm. This networking reception will herald our return from Colombia and celebrate our international business community. For information, call the Chamber at 305-446-1657.

BRIDGE, from page 1 –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– AWARD, from page 1 –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– and patinas required to achieve the classic, conservative look. Kerdyk proposed working with the Coral Gables Community Foundation’s “Parknership,” a public/private program that raises funds to preserve green spaces, create and enhance parks, and renovate landmarks. “A perfect fit,” he said, explaining that the Parknership would fund the initial pilot of painting the Granada Bridge, with hopes to continue similar work on other bridges. Coral Gables has 47 miles of waterways, with 18 bridges. Although not all are maintained by the city, officials are hopeful that success with Gables’ bridges will help convince other jurisdictions to follow suit. The Granada Mahi Bridge is one of the oldest. Built in an arch deck style in 1930, the bridge has about 8,000 square feet of surface area including beautiful balustrades and a large inner arch. Residents of the South Gables area, like Peter Hairston, who frequently cruises the waterways and traverses the bridges, wanted to improve the aesthetics of their facades and the adjoining landscaping as part of a revitalization of the waterways. “As residents of Coral Gables for the past 10 years, my family and I have enjoyed the aesthetic beauty of the city’s neighborhoods, streets and waterways,” Hairston said. “It has long been my feeling, however, that the bridges gracing our waterways could look better. They are a tribute in architectural design, but the present whitewashed finishes do not do them justice. Many friends and fellow residents have expressed the same opinion, and this has prompted our initiative.” Starting in late 2008, Hairston has led the charge to unite neighbors and the
city in order to move the project forward. The color selection for the Granada Bridge will simulate that of the DeSoto Fountain and the Alhambra Water Tower, replicating years of natural weathering and more in tune with the Mediterranean look sought by city founder George Merrick. “The mineral paints that will be used are eco-friendly, all natural and beautiful in earth tones,” Hairston said after meeting with the city’s architect to select city-approved colors and finishes. The patinas change with light reflecting from the water and moisture from rainfall makes them darker and richer. Crews were expected to begin work, first by pressure-cleaning, sealing and priming the bridge. Two or more layers of mineral paints will then be applied and a professional artist specialized in this type of process will provide finishing details. The work is expected to take about two weeks, weather permitting. After work on the Granada Bridge is finished, the expectation is that residents will want to see the same process applied to other nearby bridges such as the Maynada Street and Hardee Road bridges. For this, more supplemental funding will be required and plans are to do additional fundraising through the Community Foundation’s Parknership. “This is a feel-good project, for sure,” Kerdyk said. “These bridges really give you the feeling of being in the Miami Riviera and I’m glad the community is getting involved to make things happen.” For more information on the project, upcoming events and how to donate funds, contact Peter Hairston at 305740-2922 or by email at <peter@waterwayrenaissance.org>, or at the Parknership Program by calling Gina Green at 305-446-2586.

Chamber Goals Conference returning to The Biltmore BY LARRY NOLAN Great opportunities begin with great expectations and that is the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce’s focus this year as it hosts the 2009 Goals Conference, June 25 and 26, at the historic Biltmore Hotel. The 2009 Goals Conference is an opportunity for members to take advantage of Coral Gables’ most powerful business resource. Chamber attendees will become more fully involved and engaged, meet the leadership and begin fulfilling their own great expectations by networking. The agenda features an array of leaders, workshops and creative programs designed to acquaint professionals with the business tools within their reach and set goals for the coming year. Due to concerns about the economy, chamber chair-elect Sarah Artecona decided that the Goals Conference should be reduced to an evening and one-day event. By doing so, the chamber reduced costs significantly over last year. In addition, for a limited time through June 19 the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce will be offering an Early Bird Discount for full delegate registration. The rate before the Early Bird deadline is $325. As well, there will be a special rate to attend the high–value workshops and committee sessions. The Early Bird rate for those will be $50. The second annual George E. Merrick Award of Excellence Dinner kicks off this year’s Goals Conference in grand style on Thursday evening June 25 at 6:30 p.m. The George E. Merrick Award of Excellence recognizes the outstanding achievements of an individual who has excelled at perpetuating the vision of city and chamber founder George E. Merrick. The award will be presented to a commu-
nity leader who has made significant contributions and set standards for the cultural celebration, promotion, beautification, preservation and economic growth of the city. The second day of the 2009 Goals Conference will begin with the monthly Good Morning Coral Gables Breakfast. Miami-Dade County manager George Burgess, the keynote speaker, will discuss the Strategic Plan and budget for MiamiDade County. After a short break, attendees will break out into planning sessions, where goals will be set for the various chamber committees. Alberto Ibargüen, president and CEO of the James S. and John L. Knight Foundation, will keynote the luncheon at mid-day of the conference. The conference will conclude with an evening poolside cocktail reception. It will be a relaxing way to wind down the workweek, as well as a full day of conferencing. BY RICHARD BERNARD Actors’ Playhouse Theatre For Young Audiences presents the heroic story of everyone’s favorite mouse in the musical adaptation of E.B. White’s beloved book, Stuart Little, June 25-Aug. 1. When Stuart, a not-so-ordinary mouse, is adopted into a New York City family, he is faced with the struggle of fitting into a world that is a hundred times his size. Stuart must rely on his courage and persistence to prove to the world and to himself that what really matters is on the inside and not on the outside. This charming musical about a little guy underdog who is determined to survive in a real people’s world will touch your heart and tickle your funny bone. Cats, cars and ships are just a few of the challenges that Stuart faces in his quest to be accepted for who he is and not what he looks like.
Joseph Robinette dramatized this production with music by Ronna Frank and lyrics by Joseph Robinette and Ronna Frank. Stuart Little will captivate audiences with its positive energy and spirit. This not-so-small scale production of a tiny mouse who proves larger than life will play in the 600-seat Mainstage at the Miracle Theatre every Saturday at 2 p.m. from June 25 through Aug. 1, except on Saturday, July 4, in observance of the holiday. Prices are $15 per person with special rates for groups of 15 people or more. Birthday party packages are available with group rates for the show only and for the show plus a reception. Weekday matinees are available for pre-arranged school and camp field trips with advance bookings through the Educational Department. Betty’s Burgers local landmark for burger lovers BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD
Hamburger lovers who haven’t found their way to Betty’s Best Burgers don’t know what they are missing. The restaurant is familiar to anyone who has lived in the south Miami-Dade County area for any length of time. It was known as Fuddruckers for more than 20 years, but when the time came for the franchise agreement to be renewed, owner Betty Amos decided to go it alone. For a brief time the restaurant was named Amos Sports Grille but about a year ago she changed to the name to Betty’s Best Burgers. Anyone who travels S. Dixie Highway south of Kendall Drive probably has seen the Betty’s Best Burgers sign that stands tall above the Busway at the corner of SW 104th Street and S. Dixie Highway in front of the Big Kmart. The food remains good and plentiful and the menu is familiar. “We have tweaked it some,” she said. “We deleted some things, added some things, but it’s not much different. People tell us it’s better than it was.” The food is fresh and delicious and is cooked to order. There is an impressive number of condiments available to put on the burgers or chicken sandwiches
and they are fresh. What has remained constant is the concept of offering good food at a reasonable price, which is one of the reasons why the restaurant is a favorite hangout for youth sports teams and their parents. “It’s still a place to bring your sports teams after the games,” she said. The restaurant can hold 270 but even if it’s full, the interior is roomy so patrons don’t feel like they are sitting on top of each other. There are video games for the kids to play and plenty of big screen televisions scattered around the room to keep up with sports. Amos always is looking for groups to come in on a regular basis. “Thursday nights is motorcycle night,” Amos said. “We have hundreds of motorcycles in the back parking lot. And the first Saturday night of each month we have a classic car show and on the third Saturday night we have a car show but it’s with newer cars.” Amos said bike night draws plenty of motorcycle riders from as far as Broward County, but it’s a family friendly group that loves to sit outdoors and enjoy a cookout. “Families bring their kids even on bike night,” she said. “If they don’t ride the bikes, maybe the father brings the bike.” While the majority of patron’s at Betty’s
Betty Amos shows off Betty’s Best Burgers’ full service bar.
Best Burgers are from the neighborhood, there are some nights where patrons travel to go to the restaurant. “They come from everywhere on bike night and car night,” Amos said. “We get a lot from Broward on bike night. We never got them from that far as Fuddruckers because we had Fuddruckers in Broward.” At one time, Amos owned 14 Fuddruckers, including a big one in Coconut Grove, but now she owns only Betty’s Best Burgers.
“You tend to get more involved when you just have one. It’s fun,” she said. “So many of my friends and neighbors frequent the restaurants.” Amos is proud of her restaurant and her employees. She has not had any turnover in two years and some have been with her from when she first opened the restaurant 25 years ago. Betty’s Best Burgers is located at 7800 SW 104 St. For more information, call 305-274-1228.

Can you hear conversations, but not understand the words clearly? Does it sound like others are mumbling? This could be the first indication of hearing loss. As people begin to lose their hearing, volume does not necessarily decrease, like lowering a radio. It actually feels more like listening through a broken speaker, where you can hear but not understand what was said. To make matters worse we may lose more volume in some frequencies than others causing conversations to sound muffled and difficult to follow. Dr. Joseph K. Duran can help you understand your hearing loss and determine if hearing aids are right for you. Select the most appropriate technology for your lifestyle with the help of our exclusive “Choice Fitting Program “. Our program takes into account the for main factors that go into selecting the right hearing aid for your needs:

Residents at Independent Living Communities Live the ‘Suite’ Life BY HELEN SHAHAM Q. I’m an 85 year old widow considering a move to an independent living community. I’m still very active but have limited opportunities for socializing since most of my friends no longer drive. What’s a typical day like at a senior living community? A. You are to be commended for beginning your research while you’re still able to enjoy the many benefits an independent living community has to offer. To get a feel for the lifestyle afforded residents at a senior living community, try imagining being immersed in a world filled with sophisticated cultural, educational and social programs. Now imagine that world existing just a few steps from your front door. For residents of innovative retirement communities, this world is a reality. Each day offers endless opportunities for stimulating activities and outings as well as the option of being as relaxed as one pleases. At The Palace Suites, a luxury independent living community for active seniors in the Kendall area of Miami, residents live the Suite Life, choosing their own desired amount of privacy and social interaction. Long-time Suites’ resident Lee Hersh describes the lifestyle at The Palace the best, “It’s like a cruise ship…that never leaves the port.” Our full-time Entertainment Director provides a variety of programming ranging from fitness classes and special outings to volunteer opportunities to help residents remain independent while continuing to be active members of the community at large. On a typical day, early-risers may begin with a trip to the beautifully appointed dining room for a complimentary, rich continental breakfast with their friends. Following breakfast, residents can choose to participate in a variety of fitness classes such as tai chi, a resident favorite; Zumba, which fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms with easy to follow moves; water aerobics in our heated, outdoor pool; yoga; stretch & flex; or meditation. Additionally, our professionally staffed Wellness Center is open five days a week from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., allowing plenty of time for individual workout sessions. The Palace bustles with activity throughout the day. Residents head off to enjoy activities geared to their interests. Some may go on excursions to the Hard Rock Casino (a favorite for many), as well as the local malls while others may stay at the community, finding their way to the community’s library to enjoy a best-selling novel. For our budding Picasso’s, the water color class offers a great way to continue a lifetime hobby or discover a hidden talent. In fact, resident artist Helio De La Torre surprised his daughter Heliana Brown, when he unveiled his five creations during the community’s recent art show. “I am very impressed,” she said. “It was a talent that we always thought he had but it was never developed. This past year especially, he has undertaken a tremendous amount of work.” Living in a Senior Living community doesn’t mean our residents retire from South Florida’s cultural happenings and events. Now, without worrying about driving and parking, they are able to appreciate events much more. Recent highlights included outings to West Side Story at the Rocky Theatre, Alvin Ailey’s American Dance Theatre at the Adrienne
Ask Helen
Arsht Center for the Performing Arts and Hello Dolly at the University of Miami’s Jerry Herman Ring Theater. For lunch, residents can fix a sandwich in their apartment or enjoy the excellent bistro-style fare in our Café-Bar. We also have regular group outings to dine at one of the area’s newest restaurants or local favorites. Afternoons and evening are no exception to the continuation of activity choices. Residents can be found playing a friendly game of blackjack or bridge or joining an “Issue and Insights” discussion group. Our floral arranging and jewelry making classes are popular as well. There are also specialized groups for residents to get together with others with similar interests and backgrounds. The Men’s Group for example, may meet for an outing to pool hall or special sporting event while our Hispanic residents meet monthly for Circulo Hispanico. We even have a Red Hat Society which meets monthly. The Happy Hour kicks off every day at 4:30 p.m. and always features live entertainment. Here, at the Plaza, friends mingle for cocktails and beforedinner drinks. A typical nightly gourmet dinner may include a European cucumber salad or Caesar salad with sourdough croutons followed by a choice of four entrees ranging from filet mignon with béarnaise sauce to grilled chicken kabob in a pineapple glaze. If you are calorie-conscious, you’ll enjoy our delicious heart-healthy, low-fat items every night. As the sun sets, residents stroll over to the theater to hear a lecture, play bingo, watch live entertainment or view the latest blockbuster or a classic film. Or, perhaps they relax in their apartment, which not unlike any rental community, is decorated to their own personal tastes. There are also opportunities for spiritual enrichment at The Palace Suites. Transportation is provided to several local churches and ecumenical services are held weekly on site. Religious holidays and special traditions are observed too. In addition to everything mentioned, most communities have large events and parties celebrating various holidays and occasions throughout the year. Some of the more popular ones which residents enjoy at The Palace Suites are Valentine’s Day, Mardi Gras, Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, 4th of July, Halloween and, of course, Christmas & New-Year. If you’re still unsure about what to expect in an independent living community, try asking if you can stay there for a weekend or a few days “to experience life in the community”. If there is an available apartment, they will most likely let you do it. The Palace Suites has a popular “Discovery Program” to allow people to experience the community first hand. This is an invaluable first hand experience! If you have questions about the lifestyle changes that go with aging, or if you’d like to be invited to a social event at The Palace Suites, please send a note to Helen Shaham, The Palace Suites, 11377 S.W. 84th St., Miami, Florida 33173, call her at 305-271-2225, or email helen@thepalace.org. Helen Shaham and her husband Jacob have been operating retirement communities for nearly 30 years. The Palace Suites in Kendall is a luxury Independent Living Community for active seniors In addition, The Palace at Kendall campus is home to two Assisted Living Residences and a Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. They also operate The Palace Gardens Assisted Living Community in Homestead, Homestead Manor Nursing Home and The Palace @ Home, a Medicare Certified Home Health Agency. Their two newest projects are The Palace at Weston – luxury living for those 55 and over, and The Palace Tel-Aviv, a continuing care retirement community in Israel. They have two communities under development – The Palace at Weston Senior Living and The Palace at Coral Gables. More information can be found on the company website, www.thepalace.org.

BMW 335d Sedan is a sporty diesel with a tax credit Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS The German auto manufacturers are getting some pretty amazing results with their diesel technology, and BMW’s 335d Sport Sedan is just the latest example. With a 3.0-liter, 265 hp sequential twinturbo inline six-cylinder diesel engine under the hood, a powerplant that generates 425 pound-feet of torque, the 335d Sport Sedan rockets from 0 to 60 mph in six seconds flat. Yet, even with that kind of stellar performance, BMW claims the 335d Sedan is the most fuel efficient BMW ever sold in the United States, delivering 23 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. Equally impressive is the fact that it will travel almost 600 miles on a single tank of diesel fuel. The 335d is a member of the BMW3 Series, which is made up of a collection of rear-wheel drive sedans (AWD is an option), coupes, convertibles and wag-
ons, all available with different engines and a broad range of options, including paddle shifters on the steering wheel and a six-speed automatic transmission. All models share mechanical components and compact exterior dimensions, though there are differences in body style or exterior design. The sedan is the best seller and most recognizable. It has the familiar BMW double-kidney shaped grill and clear covered double-beam headlights that wrap around the fenders and taper to a point. All BMW 3 Series cars come standard with automatic climate and headlight control, a climate-controlled center console, heated windshield washer nozzles, rain-sensing wipers, a power moonroof, 10-speaker AM/FM/CD and BMW’s selfbraking Dynamic Cruise Control. Wheel size varies from 16 to 18 inches and all offer a choice of aluminum or different types of wood interior trims, with vinyl upholstery and a six-speed manual transmission as standard. BMW’s sixspeed Steptronic automatic ($1,325) is optional on all models. Safety features include front-impact airbags that deploy at different rates depending on the severity of impact,

front passenger side-impact airbags and full-cabin curtain-type head protection airbags. Active safety features, designed to help the driver avoid collisions, include Dynamic Stability Control and the latest generation antilock brakes. The ABS preloads the brake pedal when the driver suddenly lifts off the gas pedal, and includes a feature that sweeps the brake discs dry every 1.5 seconds when it’s raining. All models in the 3 Series are keyed on delivering a sport driving experience, with precise handling response and crisp braking capability. Even so, the 335d qual-
ifies for the Burn Technology Motor Vehicle Tax Credit because it uses significantly less fuel and produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions. That means you get “the ultimate driving experience” and, at the same time, qualify for up to $900 in federal tax credits. Base price on the 2009 BMW335d Sport Sedan is $43,900.
