Coral Gables named a ‘Playful City USA’ Chamber bids farewell to I our chairman
BY MARIA ROSA HIGGINS FALLON
n a time when 82 percent of parents believe children don’t spend enough time playing outside, 93 communities across the nation, including Coral Gables, have taken innovative approaches to make play a priority for the health and well-being of their children. To honor this commitment, KaBOOM!, a national non-profit dedicated to bringing play back into children’s lives, has named Coral Gables a “Playful City USA” community. The city was chosen for implementing programs to positively impact childhood wellness, public safety and the quality of life. A primary goal of Playful City USA is to encourage cities and towns to share creative ideas, concepts, and programs in an effort to increase play opportunities for children. KaBOOM! selected Coral Gables for its dedication to play and its ongoing renovation of several play areas. “In Coral Gables, our leadership has taken important steps to ensure that our children have access to quality places to play,” said Coral Gables Mayor Don Slesnick. “Our city offers excellent recreational opportunities not only for our children but also for our important senior population.” As a 2009 Playful City USA, Coral Gables demonstrated a commitment to making playspaces engaging, exciting,

Leadership is a rare, but truly appreciated, quality found in so few these days. Strong leaders are honest, engaging, dedicated, and thoughtful – and almost always put the needs of others ahead of their own. In these heady and challenging days of our economy, sound leadership is more important than ever. Such has been the great fortune of having Marc Berenfeld lead our Chamber this past year. Marc is a self-described accidental Chairman who has been involved in our Chamber for the past five years. He would be the first to tell you that one of the best decisions that he and his firm ever made was to join our Chamber as Trustees. It provided his companytremendous visibility in Coral Gables after relocating here from Kendall where they had been for 25 years. Membership in our Chamber offered an immediate introduction to hundreds of high-quality contacts, new business

Thomson entered UM’s College of Arts and Sciences in the spring of 1956, but put her studies on hold to pursue professional options, which ultimately led to 16 years on the Coral Gables City Council and serving as the city’s first and only female mayor. She graduated with an area of concentration in Women’s Studies and Politics with a 3.6 GPA. On hand to help celebrate were her husband, Jack, and son, Rob. Coral Gables resident selected to list of golf’s ‘Best Teachers’

BY BETSY MCCOY Coral Gables resident John Pallot, director of instruction at the John Pallot Golf Academy at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables and former collegiate standout for the University of Miami, has been named to Golf Digest magazine’s “Best Teachers in Your State” list for 2009-10. The golf industry’s most exclusive list of top teaching talent has been published in the August 2009 edition of Golf Digest. This is the second time since 2000, when Golf Digest began publishing its biennial list of top golf teachers, that Pallot has been recognized as among the best golf instructors in Florida. “I am truly honored to be named once again to this list of Best Teachers,” Pallot said. “This recognition is so meaningful because the ballots were cast by golf instructors. Being named to the Golf Digest Best Teachers list means your peers respect you as a teacher” Pallot added. Pallot, who is the founder of the John Pallot Golf Academy at the Biltmore Hotel, has devoted the past 25 years to teaching and continuing his own golf
education with golf’s great instructors, including: Butch Harmon, Jim McLean, Bob Toski, Martin Hall, Peter Kostis and John Elliot. Before becoming a golf instructor, Pallot competed nationally as an amateur and as a professional. He has achieved other notable distinctions throughout his career. This is the third time in his career, that Pallot has been recognized by the prestigious national publication. In 1978, Golf Digest ranked Pallot as among the top 10 junior golfers in the United States. A nationally recognized expert in short game skills, Pallot is one of only two golfers known to be recorded in the former Golf Digest Almanac of Golf records to have one putted all 18 holes. Pallot, who captained the University of Miami Men’s Golf Team, won four tournaments and garnered All State honors in 1980. Since the first survey in 2000, Golf Digest has used peer voting on the state and national level to build the Best Teacher lists. This year’s list was selected by more than 1,000 teachers who filled out an online ballot. There are more than 30,000 golf professionals in the United States who were eligible for consideration.

Adorno & Yoss law firm hosts Breakthrough Miami Career Day BY JILLIAN BACZEWSKI
Pictured (l-r, adults) Ariel Edwards, Breakthrough Miami; Julie Feigeles, partner, Adorno & Yoss, and Neil Rollnick, partner in charge of the Miami office, Adorno & Yoss; (fifth grade students) Samantha Rogue, Breakthrough Miami; Jessica Dominguez, Phyllis Wheatley Elementary; Gabrielle Martinez, Coral Way Elementary; Steven Roman, Ada Merritt Elementary; O’jante Armstrong, Frank C. Martin Elementary, and Michael Ochoa, Riverside Elementary.
Adorno & Yoss, the largest certified minority law firm in the United States, sponsored the annual Breakthrough Miami Career Day on Thursday, July 16, by hosting several students in the firm’s Coral Gables headquarters. Students from Miami and Fort Lauderdale schools spent the morning touring the office and meeting Adorno & Yoss team members from various job positions and departments to learn about careers in the legal field. The day concluded with a lunch with some of the lawyers and staff. In its 17th year, Breakthrough Miami is a summer program that places highly motivated low-income minority students on a path to college. Its mission is to assure that all children, regardless of background and means, will have equal access to excellent educational opportunities and enthusiastic teachers committed to their educational success.
WOODBRIDGE, from page 1 ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Mandatory workshop set After moving to Miami alone with her four small children, she worked 15 years as director of public relations for Turbana Corporation, a Coral Gablesbased banana importer. She managed the company’s involvement in community organizations and activities; handled public relations with company clients and providers; was in charge of receiving all foreign visitors, and assisted in relations with the parent company. In Miami, she met and married her husband, attorney Fred Woodbridge, and became heavily involved in charitable work, organizing several Fellowship House galas that featured Dave Barry; chairing a fundraiser for The Learning Experience School, and working tirelessly for the Coral Gables Community Foundation, holding many offices and finally becoming board chair. With the Rotary of Coral Gables, Woodbridge has become the “go to” person. She chaired Rotary’s Gables Promenade for 1997-98, one of its two best years financially; has served as vice president, chaired several committees, and currently edits the club’s weekly Rotarygram. As past president of the Rotary Club of Coral Gables, her work goes beyond South Florida. In fact, she recently received the District 6990 Rotarian of the Year Award for International Service. When Woodbridge left Turbana she started her own project management and consulting company, YW
Associates. Her Gables firm specialized in public relations; offered high level translations for major commercial customers, private parties and political organizations, and consulted for adaptation to the United States of Central and South American immigrants. She assists immigrants in making the transition to business, professional and personal life in the United States. Since 2006, she carries out these same activities, public relations and translations, in her own name. She also gives Spanish classes while dedicating most of her time in service to the community. Over the years her community service includes Salvation Army, Advisory Board for Scouts with Disabilities, Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce, Dade Partners for Miami Dade Public Schools, member of the Merrick School EESAC, Miami Committee for International Visitors, and the Junior Orange Bowl Committee. She also has been a member of the board and past vice president, Florida Chapter of Alumni of the Universidad Javeriana, Bogotá. While the list of accomplishments for this grandmother of 11 is great, her generous and tender heart are even greater. She literally helps anyone who crosses her path in need. If you were to invite people who have been touched by Yolanda Woodbridge to gather together, you would need a football stadium to accommodate them.
for cultural grant funding BY MARIA ROSA HIGGINS FALLON The City of Coral Gables invites nonprofit and cultural organizations to attend the mandatory Cultural Grants Workshop for groups interested in receiving cultural grant funding. Starting this year, applicants for funding from the City of Coral Gables are required to attend the workshop; otherwise they will not be eligible to receive funding. The workshop will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 19, 4 p.m., in the Commission Chambers at City Hall, 405 Biltmore Way, second floor. The public meeting will explain the cultural grant process of the City of Coral Gables for fiscal year 2009-10. Organizations interested in applying for a cultural grant from the City of Coral Gables must have a staff, board member, or volunteer present at this meeting. Failure to attend this mandatory meeting will automatically disqualify the organization from consideration for cultural grant funding. The City of Coral Gables has three
categories of grants: • Cultural Development Grants, which provide general operating support up to $15,000 for large Coral Gables-based groups; • Cultural Series, Festivals and Special Events Grants which award up to $10,000 for events held in Coral Gables, and • Community Grants which provide up to $5,000 for small communitybased cultural programs such as fairs and neighborhood events serving Coral Gables. At the mandatory workshop, city administrators will discuss grant eligibility requirements, review process, allowable grant expenditures, funding evaluation criteria and agreement terms. Grant application forms will be available on the city’s website the day following the workshop, with a submission deadline of Friday, Oct. 2, at 5 p.m. For more information, contact Catherine Cathers, City of Coral Gables Arts and Culture Specialist, at 305-460-5313 or send email to <ccathers@coralgables.com>.

Elizabeth Kostyrka, director of Pharmacy at Coral Gables Hospital, consults with Olivia Rabarro during the “Brown Bag Medication” event on July 11. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
BY JEN EVANS Coral Gables Hospital hosted a “Brown Bag Medication” event on Saturday, July 11, inviting the community to attend a free event, where pharmacists were on hand to answer questions about drug interactions, expired prescriptions and recalled medications. Attendees of the event were able to spend time with pharmacists as well as receive literature and a free gift. “Hosting this event allowed us to interact with members of the community to help ensure that they are safely taking their prescriptions and empowering them with the knowledge of what over-thecounter medications are okay or what may not be okay to take with prescriptions,” said Elizabeth Kostyrka, Coral Gables Hospital’s Pharmacy director. The Brown Bag event was a communi-
ty education activity aimed to teach patients to know how to properly take and store over-the-counter medications, like Advil or Maalox, and how to properly take and store medications that a physician prescribes, such as for diabetes or cholesterol. The pharmacist reviewed medications to help prevent adverse reactions by taking some over-the-counter medications with prescription medications. They also checked to see if any medications being taking had expired. All attendees were told to bring every medicine that they are taking in their original bottles. Coral Gables Hospital is a 256-bed acute care hospital located at 3100 Douglas Rd. in the heart of historic Coral Gables. The Way to A Man’s Heart Is Through His Stomach and The Way to Residents’ Hearts Is Through Great Dining Experiences BY KERRY GREEN MIAMI—Innovative retirement communities are dispelling the old-fashioned stereotypes of seniors and dining. As in any fine restaurant where gourmet dishes and appearances by the chef— dressed in crisp white toques—are expected, chefs at senior living communities are now raising the bar to meet residents’ growing demands. “Dining continues to be a common concern for many older adults moving to a senior living community,” said Helen Shaham, President of The Palace Management Group, one of South Florida’s leading companies specializing in senior housing and care. “Whether its breakfast, lunch or dinner, the dining experience can often be the highlight of the day. It’s the time when residents gather to socialize and exchange stories with friends and neighbors. And, nothing goes with great conversation like a great dining.” At The Palace, the first step in creating memorable dining experiences for residents is the selection of chefs with extensive culinary backgrounds. Alon Hershkowitz, the executive chef for The Palace Renaissance and Royale Assisted Living Communities, offers a wealth of knowledge and talent, having worked at several of the most luxurious hotels and country clubs including The National Hotel in Miami Beach. Under his culinary guidance, Assisted and Catered Living residents enjoy fine dining which rivals some of the best gourmet restaurants. He marries their desire for comfort foods such as traditional meat loaf and brisket with his flair for creating French, Italian and Mediterranean specialties. As people age, they experience a natural decline in their senses of taste and smell. Chef Alon compensates by increasing the intensity of the dish’s flavor and aroma with fresh, roasted garlic and special sauces and purees. “Dining has to be both enjoyable and healthy,” said Chef Alon. “We understand the need for limited to almost NO sodium & sugar intake and use no-salt seasonings such as Mrs. Dash. We also offer a wide variety of sugar-free desserts.” Chef Alon along with our Gabriel Garrido, the Food Service Director at The Palace Suites, a luxury independent living community, believe there’s always a reason for a celebration and have cre-
ated themed dinners throughout the month to heighten residents dining experiences. “Palace residents are well traveled and have very high expectations,” said Garrido, who has been with the company for over 10 years. “Employees get their greatest satisfaction from seeing residents happy; therefore, we go above and beyond to exceed these expectations while shattering the stereotypes of dining at a senior living community.” The Renaissance and Royale residents enjoy specialty dinners twice per month. Past themes have included German, Asian and Mediterranean. Suites’ residents enjoy gourmet dinners on Thursday nights with menu items including filet mignon and shellfish. Also, the Suites’ Happy Hour is kicked up a notch regularly, featuring an international theme and small plates from the region along with complementary entertainment. Recently themed Happy Hours have included a Spanish Tapas event featuring over 20 different appetizers along with flamenco dancers and an Italian Antipasto Party with over 15 delicious offerings including proscuitto di parma with fresh tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella. Holidays and special occasions are yet another way The Palace communities make the dining experience special. The Palace Suites recently set a record when it hosted the largest Mother’s Day brunch buffet for over140 residents and their families in addition to hosting a myriad of unique brunches throughout the year including a Sunday Gospel Brunch, a Country Western Brunch, an Oktoberfest Brunch, Father’s Day, 4th of July, Thanksgiving and Xmas Day & Hanukkah buffets, and more. Residents also have opportunities to voice their opinions about the dining experience at The Palace. In addition to talking with the Chef as he visits their table every dinner to solicit feedback, they can share their thoughts during the monthly Resident Council meeting or write their comments in the Palace biannual Resident Satisfaction Surveys. Our chefs and dining room mangers take other steps to further maximize resident dining satisfaction. White linen tablecloths adorn each table and are accented by fresh flowers. Residents also enjoy a glass of wine and freshly baked bread (baked in-house) with dinner, and the young wait staff is educated daily about the Menu, the Daily Specials
& their ingredients and how they should be served. “It’s not simply about food on a plate,” said Chef Alon. “It’s about service. The dining experience begins even before the server arrives at the table; personal service is paramount. Here, the dining staff knows residents by name and anticipate their preferences.” Chef Alon has launched an engaging, interactive cooking show too. Twice per month, he prepares dishes such as stir fry vegetables, soups and meatballs, taking residents through the food preparation process and cooking stages. Donned in aprons and hats, residents cook along, and eagerly look forward to the finished product. “The Palace chefs don’t simply make meals, they make the entire dining experience incredible,” said Shaham. “Our food services satisfaction surveys are extremely high and residents take great pride in inviting their friends and family for dinner.”
Helen Shaham and her husband Jacob have been operating Senior Living Communities for the past 30 years. The Palace Suites in Kendall is a luxury Independent Living Community for active seniors. In addition, The Palace at Kendall campus is home to two Assisted Living Residences and a Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. They also operate The Palace Gardens Assisted Living Community in Homestead, Homestead Manor Nursing Home and The Palace @ Home, a Medicare Certified Home Health Agency. Their two newest projects are The Palace at Weston – Luxury Living for Those 55 and Over, and The Palace TelAviv, a Continuing Care Retirement Community in Israel. They have two communities under development – The Palace at Weston Senior Living and The Palace at Coral Gables, Independent & Assisted Living. BY ROBERT HAMILTON Scrapbookers in Miami worried that they were losing their favorite store back in March, but new owners Nana and Vanessa not only have re-opened Scrapbooks & Stuff, they have remodeled and restocked it with the latest products and classes. Scrapbooks & Stuff, 8811 SW 132 St., the premier scrapbooking store in Miami, has reopened under new ownership. After Kobi Bender and Lisa Acosta closed their long-standing scrapbooking store in March, scrapbookers worried that they would no longer have a place to scrapbook and shop for their supplies. These worries became unnecessary when Nana Campana and Vanessa Vasquez, local scrapbookers and entrepreneurs, purchased the store
and reopened it in April. For more than eight years, Scrapbooks & Stuff has helped Miami scrapbookers with all of their scrapbooking needs. From papers to embellishments, invitations to stickers, Scrapbooks & Stuff has been the place to look for necessary supplies, excellent classes and indispensable resources. Since reopening, business has thrived as new product lines and classes have been brought in to the newly remodeled store. Although purchasing a store during an economic downturn may seem strange, Nana and Vanessa thought that keeping such a great scrapbooking resource (and one of the few remaining scrapbooking stores in Miami) was worth the risk. For information, call 305-253-0030.

School for Advanced Studies named among nation’s elite BY TARNELL CARROLL The only full-time dual enrollment public high school in Miami-Dade County is enjoying top billing this week thanks to prominent recognition in Newsweek magazine’s recently released list of the nation’s top public high schools in 2009. Miami Dade College’s (MDC) School for Advanced Studies (SAS), ranked 15th among public high schools nationwide, making it the highest ranked school in Miami-Dade County to receive the distinction of appearing on the list. The school, designed for academically talented 11th and 12th grade students who seek a rigorous Advanced Placement (AP) and college curriculum, is no stranger to the limelight. In fact, SAS has been on a rapid ascent in Newsweek’s annual top high schools list. Since 2006, the school has risen from 1,210th in the nation, to its current position of 15. And, last year, the school received the highest scores on the science portion of the FCAT exam, surpassing other high schools in MiamiDade County. “The school’s success is due in large part to the support Miami Dade College provides our program,” said Guillermo Muñoz, principal of the School for Advanced Studies. “Our students are very lucky to have the opportunity to attend a high quality institution such as MDC while still in high school. The experience they get by attending college for two years is something that they point to as a key to the successes they have come to enjoy once they graduate from our program.” The Newsweek rankings were derived by calculating the number of AP, International Baccalaureate or Cambridge tests taken by students at a school divided by the number of seniors graduating the same year. Many SAS students graduate with both an Associate in Arts degree and a high school diploma as a result of success on the AP exams, CLEP exams, and summer school at MDC. Established during the 1988-89 school year as a small program located at MDC’s North Campus, SAS is a combined effort of MDC and Miami-Dade

County Public Schools (MDCPS). Since opening more than 20 years ago, it has expanded to a total of four MDC campuses: Homestead, Kendall, North and Wolfson. Each semester, students are enrolled in three college dual-enrollment courses taught by MDC faculty, and three AP high school courses taught by MDCPS faculty. One hundred percent of SAS students graduate and continue their academic studies at colleges and universities in Florida, throughout the nation, or at top institutions abroad. Some have been accepted at such prestigious universities as Princeton, Cornell, Brown, NYU, Yale, the University of Chicago, Emory, Stanford, University of Edinburgh, and all the public universities in the state of Florida. “We will work hard to make sure that SAS continues to bring recognition and accolades to this community, the public school system, and the college,” Muñoz added. Should I call the police to talk to my out-of-control child? BY MICHELLE ESTLUND, Criminal Defense Attorney
Should parents call the police when a child refuses to obey them or borrows the family vehicle without permission, when a teenager punches a hole in a wall or threatens physical violence to a parent or sibling? Today, there is no clear cut answer. Years ago, despairing parents might call the police in hopes that an officer giving the disruptive child a stern lecture might work where they have exhausted every other form of discipline. Parents felt that the neighborhood police department served as a back-up in their arsenal of parenting tools. In return, police departments often obliged and used those visits as a means of strengthening relationships within the community. In today’s world, this model of police/community interaction is no longer valid. An unnecessary call to the police may become a loss rather than a gain, especially for a child’s future. With most police departments lacking the time needed to
mediate non-emergency family disputes, police officers rarely have the authority to exercise the same discretion they once did. The parent should understand that once the police arrive and they determine that a crime has occurred—physical violence, threatening behavior, an unauthorized use of a motor vehicle—the child may be arrested regardless of the parent’s wishes. The child may then have to face formal charges in juvenile court or, for more serious charges, in adult court. If safety of the family or the child is the major concern, a 911 call is still warranted. But the parent and the child should be aware that once that call has been made the decisions about the outcome of the event are in the hands of the judicial system, not the family. An arrest record can affect a child’s future acceptance into colleges, entrance into the armed forces, and career choices. If the police have already become involved, parents would do well to consult with an attorney with extensive experience in the juvenile court system to determine the effect of any decisions on their child’s future. A few things to know about protecting your home from a hurricane
Earn a Masters Degree in Oriental Medicine in only 36 months Become a Licensed Massage Therapist in only 9 months
BY BOB CARSON
We have exactly what you’re looking for! Financial Aid is available for all who qualify! Classes are forming now!
There is a price we pay to live in paradise — hurricanes. Fortunately, we know when a hurricane is approaching and can prepare. Preparations include adequate supplies of food, water, gasoline and cash. The important thing is to protect yourself and the place where you store all the supplies — your home. Protecting your home from a hurricane means wind protection. You must protect the “envelope” of your home. Protecting the envelope means securing all openings against wind intrusion. Our building code requires storm protection to meet minimum standards for positive and negative wind pressure. The pressure of the wind blowing against your windows and doors is a positive wind load. Most of us can understand the importance of protecting against flying debris and the force of a 150 mph wind. What is somewhat more difficult to understand is a negative wind load. As the wind passes around your home, it creates an extremely low pressure on the opposite side of the blowing wind. This negative wind pressure can suck unprotected windows right out of the wall. We found out during Hurricane Andrew that negative wind pressure can even pull storm protection off the wall if it is not installed properly. There are several “code approved” forms of hurricane protection. All products must meet a minimum standard in Miami-Dade County. Products are not tested to the fail point; they are only tested to meet the minimum standard. Forms of approved protection include storm shutters, protective screens and impact windows. Homeowners can use a combination of products, as long as the product is approved and installed properly. Each product has some advantages and disadvantages. The following is a basic list of approved products: • Storm panels — available in aluminum or galvanized steel, relatively inexpensive, but labor intensive to deploy and remove, require storage space. • Accordion and roll-up shutters — made from extruded aluminum, range in price from moderate to expensive, easy deployment, permanently mounted, require no storage space. • Protective screens — made from steel, Kevlar Mesh or polypropylene, moderate to expensive, can be permanently mounted or removable, easy deployment, best for patio
Contractors must be licensed and insured to obtain a permit. Don’t be fooled by some contractors who offer to reduce the price if the homeowner pulls their own permit. perimeter enclosure. • Impact windows — frames made from aluminum or vinyl, moderate to expensive, no shutters required, passive protection from storms, enhanced home security, enhanced energy efficiency, federal tax credit available on most styles. PROPER INSTALLATION IS IMPORTANT Storm protection products, as many other building products, require a building permit. Building permits are a homeowner’s assurance that they have the right product installed correctly. If you’re trying to qualify for discounts on wind storm insurance premiums, get a permit. If you have an insurance claim after a storm, you better have the permit ready for the adjuster. Contractors must be licensed and insured to obtain a permit. Don’t be fooled by some contractors who offer to reduce the price if the homeowner pulls their own permit. This is a red flag that the contractor may not be licensed or insured. A few hundred dollars for a building permit is a small price to pay for what may happen if there is an accident on the job or the contractor disappears. Craftsmanship and customer service are what separate quality contractors from the rest. Windows and shutters can be installed according to the building code and still look terrible. Since construction is not an exact science, all homes have slightly different window and door sizes. Quality contractors should make the product fit the opening, not just assume standard sizes. It’s your home, aesthetics are important.

BY MICHELLE PALOMINO Lieutenant Robert Schneider, a 33year Miami-Dade firefighter, fulfilled his lifelong dream to dive in the Reef Aquarium at Miami Seaquarium. The symbolic dive took place on his last shift before retiring and signaled the end of his career as a firefighter on Key Biscayne. “When I was a child, Miami Seaquarium was the first attraction that I visited. I always wished that I could someday dive in the Reef Aquarium, said Lt. Schneider, who was one of the first divers for Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. “Miami Seaquarium is pleased to have been able to honor Lt. Schneider in such a memorable way, said Andrew
Hertz, general manager at Miami Seaquarium. “Congratulations to him and all firefighters who selflessly dedicate their service to our community.â€? The Reef Aquarium at Miami Seaquarium features a 750,000-gallon main tank teeming with reef fishes of every size, color and description. Miami Seaquarium, South Florida’s most popular tourist attraction, is a family-oriented marine-life park open to the public 365 days a year. The park provides visitors with a greater understanding and appreciation for marine life through shows, presentations and marine-life exhibits. Facing foreclosure? Is bankruptcy an option for you? BY DANIA S. FERNANDEZ, ESQ., Attorney at Law Bankruptcy is a perfectly legitimate way to stop foreclosures and repossessions, put an end to lawsuits, protect paychecks from garnishments and regain control of your life. When filing for bankruptcy, it must be filed correctly in order to for it be successful. It is important to consult a bankruptcy attorney or debt relief lawyer in your area to ensure that you fully understand your options regarding bankruptcy and whether this is the best decision for your financial future. Personal bankruptcy is filed either as a Chapter 7 or a Chapter 13: Chapter 7—Liquidation—wipes out most of your debts and in return, you may have to give up some of your property. If you are considering a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy and you are behind in your mortgage, make certain that you first reach a loan modification/loan workout or refinance with your lender. In the Chapter 7 Bankruptcy there will not be a loan modification option of your existing mortgage and, therefore, if you stop paying your mortgage you could lose your home. Your homestead is exempt. However, it can be foreclosed on if you do not pay. Chapter 13–Reorganization— enables you to pay off all or a portion of your debts during a three to five year period, yet does not require you to give up any of your assets to pay creditors. As long as you keep making payments, creditors will not bother you for payment or continue the foreclosure against your property. In the Chapter 13 Bankruptcy you can save your house.
The following is a list of facts you should know about filing bankruptcy: • Bankruptcy is a matter of public record. • A credit counseling course and financial management course are required. • Creditors will be prohibited from contacting you concerning your debt. • Florida law will exempt certain assets. • You may suffer some discrimination in future employment opportunities. • A stigma may still be attached to filing bankruptcy. • A record of filing for bankruptcy may remain on your credit profile for up to 10 years. • By eliminating your debt in Chapter 7 or making payments in a Chapter 13, you will immediately improve your credit score. In the midst of an economic crisis, please try not to forget the importance of life and your priorities. I have clients who are falling apart not only financially, but also emotionally and physically. Saving your home is not the only solution. A job is needed that can pay for the revised monthly payment. Activities to stimulate good health and family events to create memorable moments with children, family and friends are a must. Take all the necessary steps to preserve what is important to you by taking advantage all of your options. There are options available for you. And, more continue to come with evolving federal and state laws. Know your rights and know your options. Call an attorney today to guide you towards stabilizing your life. For more information on foreclosure, loan modifications and bankruptcy, go to www.daniafernandez.com. 2010 Volvo XC60 aims at new generation of buyers Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS Volvo hit a home run with the XC90 sport utility vehicle; they’ve done it again with the new XC60. The 2010 Volvo XC60 is a new entry in the Small Premium Utility segment, one of the fasting growing markets in the auto industry. It has beautiful styling, all the latest safety technology, outstanding comfort and dynamic performance, and it was designed to capture a new generation of Volvo buyers, while retaining those already loyal to the brand. The XC60’s styling blends a muscular lower body with a sporty coupe-like cab. A new trapezoidal grille holds an enlarged Volvo logo and a strong shoulder line blends into the rear liftgate flanked by LED taillights. The XC60 is available in only one model, the T6 AWD. It’s powered by a 3.0liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine that produces 281 hp and 295 pounds-
feet of torque. Power is transferred to the ground via a six-speed Geartronic automatic transmission and Volvo’s All-Wheel Drive with Instant Traction. Oversize 18inch wheels (19 inches are optional) along with 9.1 inches of ground clearance enable the XC60 to cross terrain that would be impossible in a conventional passenger car. Enhanced Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC) is standard, along with a new feature called Trailer Stability Assist (TSA) that allows for more stable driving when towing. The XC60 offers many new systems, including a driver support system aimed at preventing or mitigating collisions occurring at speeds of 19 mph or less. It utilizes a closing velocity sensor to help determine whether a collision is likely. Depending on the closing speed, City Safety will either pre-charge the brakes or automatically brake the XC60 to help avoid a rear-end collision or lessen its impact. The XC60’s cabin reflects the design of the exterior, keyed an ultra-slim center control panel with an optional new integrated navigation screen that’s angled slightly toward the driver. The seats have

been re-designed Volvo’s first panoramic roof is optional and offers increased light and an open-air feeling with two laminated glass panels. The XC60 offers HD Radio as standard equipment, updating radio to digital quality. FM broadcast quality improves to the level of a typical CD, while AM broadcast quality is improved to the prior level of FM. The XC60’s standard high performance sound system includes AUX and USB inputs to allow connection and control of personal music devices such as iPods, memory sticks and other media players.
Sirius Satellite radio with a complimentary six-month subscription and Bluetooth hands-free phone interface also are standard. Audiophiles have a choice between the optional Dynaudio Premium Sound System with a 650-watt amplifier, 12 Dynaudio speakers and Dolby Pro-Logic II Surround.

WEEKLY HOROSCOPES Aries - You are likely to be a bit confused this week, because there are terrific spiritual energies affecting your personality and ego, and you are experiencing a disillusion of the boundaries you normally keep so strongly between yourself and the emotions of others.
Libra - You are going to feel sensual, romantic and idealistic this week. If you are single, you may meet someone who is highly attractive, intelligent and who returns your attention this week. You'll know it's the right one because you'll be able to talk for hours.
Taurus - Spiritual growth is reaching a plateau and you feel that you need to find a spiritual leader or mentor to teach you. But are you sure that is what you really need? There is a terrific book called "If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him". Maybe you will find some of the answers there.
Scorpio - You have a lot of paperwork to
Gemini - It's about networking this week. Not the computer kind, but the distinctly old-fashioned kind of networking, where people of like mind get together to share interests over coffee or beer. A group meeting or get-together could be valuable to your future goals.
Sagittarius - You are full of creative energy and vigor this week. You may decide to take up painting, drawing or a musical instrument. It will be relaxing and will help you connect with something you felt was lost a long time ago. If you have children it may be time for piano lessons.

Capricorn - Your holidays don't have to be "perfect" in order to be positive and purposeful. If you let go of your need for everyone to get along, a strange sense of peace could come over you that lifts the stress and the drama. Under all that you really do all love one another.
