Club celebrates 50 years teaching water safety BY MARIA ROSA HIGGINS FALLON hat started half a century ago with a group of stay-athome moms looking to do a good deed has grown into a well-greased volunteer organization of about 125 people dedicated to teaching water safety. The Venetian Aquatic Club was formed in 1959 as a non-profit organization dedicated to teaching swimming to children and adults at the beautiful and historic Venetian Pool in Coral Gables. “We have bodies of water all around us,” said Desiree Anthony, president of the club and a volunteer with the organization for the past 14 years. “Many children don’t know the dangers around water and as a result we’ve had many deaths in Florida. Our priority is to bring awareness about water safety in our community.”

A Miami Beach native, Kaplan opened his first Books & Books store in Coral Gables in 1982. In 2000, Kaplan moved Books & Books to a new expanded location on Aragon in a beautiful Mediterranean-styled building next to the future site of the Coral Gables Museum, a perfect setting for this cultural center. Kaplan’s renown in the literary world has made it possible for the store to host more MITCHELL KAPLAN than 60 events a month, consisting of author readings and book signings, demonstrations and workshops, live music and film series, reading and discussion groups, programming for children and families, and a variety of other communitybased events.
JLM Headquarters was designed in 1923 as a miniature “Venetian Palace” and was built in 1925 by George Merrick’s Coral Gables Construction and Supply Company. It was the first commercial building in Coral Gables and housed numerous businesses. Through various owners and years of vacancy, the building was left in disrepair before JLM purchased it in 1995. “JLM Headquarters is a huge sense of pride for us and we are privileged to call such a storied Coral Gables gem home,” said Erin Knight, president of Junior League of Miami. “In 1996 we embarked on an ambitious four-phase plan to –––––––––––––––––– See

BY ROBERT HAMILTON Giving instead of receiving is a valuable lesson taught to the campers of the Mini Canes Recreational Sports Camp at the UM’s Herbert Wellness Center. Every summer the campers donate the profits from their weekly pizza lunches to the United Way. This past summer the campers raised a record $3,182, bringing the total donated during the past nine years to $20,708. Mini Canes camp is open to children
ages 6-12. In addition to providing sports and physical recreation, the campers also learn about the importance of leading a wellness lifestyle. One important component of wellness is good citizenship, which is demonstrated through the United Way Pizza Day campaign. The campaign teaches the children that sometimes giving is better than receiving and helping others is a worthwhile cause. For information about Mini Canes camp, contact Rhonda DuBord at 305-284-6523.

Volunteers join together to make repairs to home BY JOSH MERKIN Rebuilding Together Miami-Dade as well as more than 25 student volunteers from the University of Miami and volunteers from the Community Improvement Project worked together on Saturday, Aug. 29, to provide home repairs for a needy disabled family in Coconut Grove. Tyrone Borden, a retired employee from the City of Coral Gables, currently is on kidney dialysis. His wife, Patricia, retired after suffering from a heart attack and diabetes, also is on dialysis. The couple’s daughter also lives in the residence and suffers from a kidney disease. Due to their disability, the Bordens have been unable to keep up with maintenance on their home. They were facing fines from the city for not being compliant with code enforcement due to chipped paint on their home and also needed a new toilet and handicap bars so they are able to maneuver around their bathroom. The volunteers spent several hours repainting the entire exterior of the home, installing handicap bars, landscaping and making other minor home repairs. Rebuilding Together Miami-Dade chapter is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit foundation that preserves homeownership and revitalizes neighborhoods by providing free rehabilitation services to the elderly, veterans, disabled and low income homeowners. The organization is part of a network of more than 204 affiliates and is the nation’s leading nonprofit working to preserve affordable homeownership and revitalize communities. In fact, for people between the ages of 5 and 24, drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death. Anthony, who lives a couple of blocks from the Venetian Pool, said that both her children were taught how to swim at the historic facility. She heads a group of volunteers, mostly women, who are certified to give swimming classes for both children and adults, from the introductory Level 1 through the most advanced Level 6. Members of the Venetian Aquatic Club are busy especially from June through August for what Anthony calls “the best swimming classes in all of South Florida.â€? One volunteer who has been there since the beginning is Jean Roth, a golden resident herself who has faithfully given her free time for 50 years to teaching children how to swim at the Venetian Pool. Recently, the Coral Gables City Commission recognized her contribution
by declaring Aug. 26, 2009, as Jean Roth Day in Coral Gables. Born in Cincinnati, OH, Roth moved to Coral Gables when her husband took a job at the University of Miami. One day, she answered an ad in the newspaper looking for volunteers and became a founding member of the Venetian Aquatic Club. She continues to volunteer to this day, always being on time and with a smile on her face. In a demonstration of solidarity, another long-serving community organization in Coral Gables, the Women’s Club, donated $750 to the Venetian Aquatic Club toward new equipment and teaching supplies. The money was presented at the Coral Gables City Commission on Aug. 25, a day that also was declared as “Venetian Aquatic Club Dayâ€? in Coral Gables. High school students become architects for summer at UM BY MARIE GUMA-DIAZ While most kids spent their summer vacations relaxing at home or at the beach with friends, several high school students in Miami learned architectural skills during a recent summer camp offered by the University of Miami School of Architecture. The program, called Summer Studies in Architecture for High School Students, now in its 22nd year, introduces students to the design process, giving them access to UM instructors and to the School of Architecture’s state-of-the-art facilities, including the model shop, design studios, lecture rooms, library and computer lab. The three-week program provides a unique opportunity for students considering architecture as a profession. Faculty and graduate assistants offer courses designed to give high school students an introduction to the profession as well as to the university experience. The daily program exposes students to the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, and
urban design, enhancing a student’s environmental awareness, intellectual development and career determination. The course was taught this year by University of Miami professor of architecture Gary Greenan. It involved the students working on two projects. First, a design for the new student center planned at UM. These wood models were created at the school’s Model Shop and with the help of its director Adrian Villaraos. The second project was for each student to design in clay an Italian garden in Bagnaia, Italy. At the end of the three-week program, the students presented their models to a team of jurors including Professor Greenan; dean of the School of Architecture Elizabeth PlaterZyberk; alumna and architect Peggy McMahon, and faculty member Victor Santana. For more information or to make a reservation for next summer’s program, contact Fay Bernardo, School of Architecture at 305-284-3438 or by email at <fbernardo@miami.edu>.

CREC (Continental Real Estate Companies), one of Florida’s largest full-service commercial real estate companies, has announced that CVS Pharmacy will be opening a new store at the Kendall Value Center. Anchored by a BJ’s Wholesale Club, Kendall Value Center is located at Sunset Drive and SW 117th Avenue. CREC vice president Carlos Guzman, who represented the landlord, LKS Associates, said the lease transaction brings the 178,036-squarefoot Kendall shopping center to 100 percent occupancy. “CVS adds to the tenant mix at this high-traffic center,” Guzman said. Guzman said CVS plans to demolish an existing 8,000-square-foot structure
previously occupied by Roadhouse Grill, and build a new 13,000-square-foot pharmacy with two drive-through lanes for customer convenience. “By attracting a national credit tenant, CREC was able to add value to this dynamic retail property,” Guzman added. Founded in 1989 by chair Warren P. Weiser and president Carol Brooks, CREC today is one of Florida’s largest commercial firms, managing a portfolio of more than 80 office and retail properties totaling 10 million square feet. With offices throughout the state of Florida, CREC specializes in asset and property management, leasing, tenant representation, construction management/development dispositions and finance, and creative workout solutions. Florida Renaissance Festival coming to Miami in January BY JOSE BOZA Ponce De Leon explored Key Biscayne on his first mission to the New World in 1513 and claimed it on behalf of the Spanish King. The Florida Renaissance Festival, the only Renaissance festival in South Florida, will commemorate Ponce De Leon’s legacy by showcasing its first Miami show ever on Key Biscayne. The Miami festival weekend dates are Jan. 9 to Jan. 24, 2010, at Historic Virginia Key Beach Park. “It’s been more than five years since a Renaissance festival graced Miami and our yearly festival goers have been very passionate about bringing an event back,” said Bobby Rodriguez, executive producer of the Florida Renaissance Festival. “We feel that Historic Virginia Key Beach Park is the perfect location because it offers the environment that we re-create every year at our other events.” This 16th Century production features more than 100 costumed performers, 12 stages with continuous entertainment and 20 stage acts from around the world. During the three family-themed weekends, guests will enjoy jousting tournaments three times
a day, hearty food, human-powered rides and games for children that include the World’s Largest Rocking Horse, Giant Chess, Barrel Rides, and games of strength and skill. The festivities will feature historical reenactments, sword fights, magical illusions and an abundance of authentic fare from freshly made kettle corn to roasted giant turkey legs, which can be washed down with a swig of mead or ale. The Florida Renaissance Festival is produced by the national, award-winning Bobby Rodriguez Productions and strives to create an entertaining and cultural opportunity by making Renaissance history come to life for both children and adults. The event is hosted by Miami-Dade County Park and Recreation Department and Historic Virginia Key Beach Park. The Florida Renaissance Festival at Historic Virginia Key Beach Park will be open weekends from 10 a.m. to sunset. Prices are $20 for adults and $7 for children ages 6-11 and children under 5 are free. Season passes are $30 for adults and $15 for children under 12. Pre-show discount tickets are available online at <www.ren-fest.com>.

Author James Swain returns with latest novel, The Night Monster BY CINDY MURRAY From the best-selling author of The Night Stalker, James Swain, comes a new suspense novel, The Night Monster. On Sept. 15, Swain returns to the shadow side of the Sunshine State, where blood can run cold even in the tropical heat. With The Night Monster, Swain brings his trademark accuracy and insight, drawing on his meticulous research and connections amongst high-level law enforcement sectors as tough as nails abduction specialist Jack Carpenter faces a criminal who has haunted him from an unsolved case early in his career. When Carpenter witnesses his daughter’s college basketball teammate being violently abducted and Carpenter recognizes the kidnapper’s face, a 20-year-old cold case reopens. With the eager assistance of the victim’s high-powered tycoon father, the uneasy cooperation of his former unit’s new commander, and precious little time before the trail goes cold, Jack and his trusty dog Buster hit the ground running. Festival Miami attracts world-class performers BY ELIZABETH AMORE
The 26th year of one of Miami’s most exciting traditions — Festival Miami — is back to kick off the fall season with great and inspiring music. The Festival, which runs Oct. 2-30, will present a diverse roster of recognized musical artists from around the world. Festival Miami audiences will enjoy world-class music and dance programming in four themed weeks including Great Performances, Creative American Music, Music of the Americas, and Jazz and Beyond. “We highlight music from various historical periods and genres drawn from around the globe,” said Frost School of Music dean Shelton Berg. “In addition to providing extraordinarily diverse music to the public, this format exposes our students to these multiple traditions.” Classical music lovers have five Great Performances in Festival Miami, beginning on the Festival’s opening night, Oct. 2, with the Frost Symphony Orchestra (FSO) celebrating the German Romantic Tradition. The FSO will per-

Also in that concert, faculty pianist Tian Ying will perform Beethoven’s great Emperor Concerto. The Frost Chamber Players and Frost Wind Ensemble bring more outstanding UM faculty and student artists to the stage, while The Frost Opera Theater will present Six Operas in Sixty Minutes. Pianist Kevin Kenner, winner of the International Chopin Competition plays music of that beloved composer and the Miami Symphony Orchestra adds to this series’ exciting classical range. The not-to-be-missed kickoff to the Creative American Music theme is the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) Tribute to Henry Mancini with Monica

Ginny Mancini, the wife of the late composer, will offer anecdotes, remembrances and insights. Other series artists include three-time Grammy winner Shawn Colvin together with UM alumnus and multi-Grammy winner Bruce Hornsby in a performance of some the most beautiful songs in popular music. Colvin and Hornsby also will judge and select the best student work during the Songwriter’s Showcase. Children’s favorite Red Grammer, known for his glorious voice and awardwinning songs, performs for the young at heart in a Halloween concert. The Music of the Americas series features Latin Grammy winner, jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, presenting a Softer Side on Oct. 17 with music from his new CD for Concord Records. Also on this series, the exciting and visually stimulating IFÉ-ILÉ Afro-Cuban Dance Company will have the audience dancing in the aisles. The acclaimed Chilean singer/songwriter Claudia Acuña, brings her vocal “instrument of wonder,” to the Gusman stage, and Carlos Reyes, a virtuoso of violin and the Paraguayan harp, brings an infectious blend of Latin, jazz and rock. Also this year, Festival Miami is proud to present the master of salsa Willy
Chirino performing his distinctive “Miami Sound.” Concerts under the heading Jazz and Beyond include six-time Grammy winner, jazz vibraphonist Gary Burton bringing his performance mastery to Gusman Hall on Saturday, Oct. 10. In the forefront of jazz for more than 40 years, Burton will lead a master class and perform with student ensembles — the Stamps Jazz Quintet and the Frost Jazz Sextet. Carmen Bradford, former vocalist with the Count Basie Orchestra, will appear with the award-winning Frost Jazz Vocal-1 Ensemble along with pianist and Frost School of Music Dean Shelton Berg. Festival Miami will close with two outstanding nights of jazz with seven-time Grammy nominated bassist/composer John Clayton. Clayton has arranged for Queen Latifah, Diana Krall and Natalie Cole — and he teams with the versatile and dynamic drummer Jeff Hamilton. The first concert will feature Clayton and Hamilton with Dean Shelton Berg and other Frost jazz faculty artists. The concluding evening on Oct. 30 brings the duo together with the Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra and the Frost Concert Jazz Band for an unforgettable evening of symphonic and big band music. Nissan unveils plug-in ‘Leaf’ to automotive media group Pictured at the August SAMA luncheon meeting at the Rusty Pelican Restaurant on Virginia Key are (l-r) Ron Beasley, president of the Southern Automotive Media Association, with Nissan executives Tracy Woodard, Julie Lawless, Mark Perry, and SAMA vice president Paul Borden. Perry, director of product planning and strategy, told the automotive writers that the company would introduce its new “Leaf” plug-in electric vehicle in late 2010. He said the Leaf is a “normal” five-door hatchback that seats five adults, has zero emissions, is affordable and has a range of 100 miles on a single battery charge. Perry said the Leaf would be priced competitively (around $24,000) and added that he is working with government and private enterprise to set up a network of charging stations across the country that would make the vehicle more practical for extended travel. 2009 Hyundai Elantra named top compact car in U.S. Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS While most of the auto industry has been singing the blues in 2009, Hyundai’s tune has been a much sweeter song. Sales in June totaled 37,943 units, a 24 percent drop from a year ago, but a 3 percent increase over the previous month and enough to vault the Korean company into sixth place as the best-selling brand in the U.S. Hyundai also got some more good news when the Genesis sedan was named the 2009 North American Car of the Year. Also, J.D. Power and Associates in its prestigious 2009 Initial Quality Study ranked Hyundai the No. 1 non-premium brand in the U.S. and fourth in the industry. In that same study, J.D. Power ranked the Hyundai Elantra as the No. 1 compact car, a stunning accomplishment for the automaker. The Elantra is deserving of its lofty ranking. It’s roomy and comfortable, stylishly designed, and delivers good per-
formance and responsive handling. Chalk that up to the advanced 2.0-liter, 132-hp in-line four-cylinder engine that powers the Elantra. It’s a very responsive 16-valve powerplant with dual overhead camshafts (DOHC) and continuously variable valve timing (CVVT) that delivers a broad power spread, high fuel efficiency (24/33 mpg) and low emissions. The four-door Elantra is available in two trim levels — GLS and SE. It has chrome headlight bezels and grille bars and a sculpted profile with and a rising beltline; integrated body-color door handles and mirrors and a character line shared with other Hyundai models. To the rear, the taillights echo the theme of the headlights. The Elantra also has a sleek design with a low coefficient of drag (0.32) that improves fuel efficiency at highway speeds and reduces interior noise. On the inside, the dashboard has a modern look and slopes downward to give a feeling of more space while allowing for greater visibility. The contrasting gray or beige two-tone color schemes, combined with metallic finishes, complement the upscale exterior styling. On the SE model, leather seats are available and have a luxurious, supple feel. The seats

are comfortable and versatile, including a multi-adjustable driver’s seat with variable height settings, adjustable head restraints and a 60/40 split fold-down rear seatback to accommodate larger cargo. Other interior amenities include steering wheel-mounted cruise and audio controls, and a center console with dual-level storage compartments and a comfortable armrest. Also standard are a cabin air filter, rear window defroster, tinted glass, two-speed variable intermittent windshield wipers with
mist function, power heated mirrors, power windows and door locks, and remote keyless entry with alarm and trunk release. SiriusXM Satellite Radio also is standard. Pricing on the Elantra ranges from $14,795 to $18,495.

WEEKLY HOROSCOPES Aries -You may find that it is easier to deal with people you don't know as well this week. Those close to you, friends and family, are a little cranky and unreliable. You may find that the kindness of strangers makes the chores of the week much easier to handle.
Libra - You will be a little down on the spiritual elders in your faith, because you are facing a serious dilemma. Do you walk away from "The Faith" because you have found there are some cracks in the stained glass? Or do you stick with it to find the greater truth?

Gemini - A home-based business may turn out to be far more challenging than you expected. There is likely to be a lot more physical work involved in a home business or renovation project than you planned for, and it will be important for you to be careful with sharp tools.
Cancer - Trust your intuition if you get an

Capricorn - You have somewhere to go but it seems the hurrier you are, the behinder you get. You may find that a commute or trip is all but impossible. Rush-hour traffic is likely to be a nightmare. If you have a radio station with regular traffic reports, put it on your scanning list!

Many homeowners and condominium associations throughout South Florida are experiencing a cash crisis as a result of owners failing to pay their required maintenance assessments. Without this necessary income, the associations bills pile up quickly leaving important services such as insurance, lawn care, management, and maintenance unpaid for, with some vendors unwilling to provide further services. Severe cases can leave associations without enough money to maintain basic necessities such as fire and safety equipment, security gates, and even water and garbage services. To make matters worse, some lenders are refusing to issue loans on the units within these communities and condominiums due to the severe delinquency rates of the associations, essentially putting a freeze on the marketability of such units. Much of the problem can be attributed to investors, many of whom own multiple units in the same community or condominium, not paying their assessments (some of whom receive income from tenants living in their units but still refuse to pay their assessments). An association’s best course of action is to find a competent, diligent and aggressive attorney. Legal incompetence (including not utilizing effective legal strategies for the current market), an attorney’s inability to communicate with the board and manager of the association, and/or the failure of an attorney to proceed aggressively and diligently on behalf of the association, can cause unnecessary delays and additional financial suffering. For instance, some attorneys advise their clients to follow the passive approach of not filing liens against delinquent units and not proceeding with association foreclosures, thinking that lenders will eventually foreclose their defaulted borrowers and pay the association its money. The reality is that in today’s market, lenders are stalling their foreclosures until they find buyers first, so the process can take an unreasonably long period of time. Meanwhile, if the first mortgage holder does finally take title to the unit through its foreclosure, it is then entitled by law to a sizeable write off of the prior owner's past due amounts, resulting in significant bad debt to the association. This bad debt is then absorbed by the association and eventually paid for by the responsible owners who are paying their assessments. To succeed in the current market, associations need an aggressive attorney who files liens against the delinquent unit owners quickly and, in applicable cases, files foreclosure complaints (lawsuits) against the delinquent unit owners to collect the amounts due to the association. There is also a new blanket receivership approach where, by law, associations can petition the court to appoint a single receiver to collect the rents from all tenants living in units that are under foreclosure by the association or which come under foreclosure in the future (which prohibits investors from collecting income from tenants while failing to pay their assessments). Aggressively applied legal pressure against the owner and/or their lender is especially necessary in this type of depressed real estate market and will undoubtedly bring in a lot more money to the association in a much faster time than simply waiting for the lender to come through.
