As the eldest of a large family, she developed early on as a natural caregiver as well as an entrepreneur and environmentalist. In fact, often with a young child in tow, she would recycle funeral baskets and sell them back to local flower shops. After graduating from Nassau College on Long Island, Bauer’s first job as a registered nurse was charge nurse of an intensive care unit, which helped fund her undergrad premed courses at Rosary Hill College in New York before going on to Medical School in the Dominican Republic. While studying in the Dominican Republic, she saw need and used her medical skills on medical jaunts to Haiti. There, in the sparse woods leading to the Sans Souci Palace, near Cap Haitien, she treated LYNN BAUER bands of lepers, some as young as 4 who cowered from humanity as leprosy and poverty consumed them. Ostracized by society and taunted by Baby Doc’s Ton Ton Macutes, they waited for food, for medical care and for an angel like Bauer to acknowledge their existence and provide help. Once Bauer returned to home, she continued her outreach to children. Running affordable tennis clinics for children in the

anta Claus is coming to Coral Gables City Hall on Friday, Dec. 4, for the city’s 2009 Holiday Spectacular. The official start of this year’s festivities is at 5 p.m. and they continue until 10 p.m. with a night full of activities including carnival games and rides, face painting, cartoon artist, candy land park, Village of Merrick Park Yuletide Carolers and special presentations by Miami Children’s Theater, Actors’ Playhouse and Maria Verdeja School of the Arts.

We encourage everyone to come and celebrate again with us on Dec. 4.” Santa is expected to arrive in grand style on a fire truck at 7 p.m. to join the members of the city commission for the lighting of the giant tree placed in front of City Hall. This past month, my CEO (Chamber Educational Outreach) Workday took me to a delicious little green gem right in the heart of our City Beautiful – the Green Gables Café. A fixture on Alhambra Circle for the past two years, they moved recently to their new, larger location on the north side of the 300 Block. The minute you enter the Green Gables Café, you feel right at home. There is a familiar, warm and comfortable atmosphere that overwhelms you, including the delicious aromas that immediately beckon your senses. This is more than just a little restaurant that serves great food; there is a story here and one that I immediately fell in love with. Ana and her two daughters (Laura and Christina) make the Green Gables Café a little slice of heaven with a huge portion of heart. These three quickly sized-up my abilities and realized I would be best suited rolling silverware. Alas, even that proved to be a challenge – mostly due to distractions caused by the fast-paced atmosphere serving restaurant patrons, prepping take-out and delivery

Woman’s Club reaches out with holiday food baskets Gloria Burns GLORIA’S GAB With the holidays upon us, many are reaching out to help others. GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club has provided dozens of families whose children receive care at the club’s free May Van Sickle Dental Clinic with food baskets. The club’s second vice president Debi Wilborn orchestrated the collection of food items from members during a recent meeting. Members prepared the baskets picked up by those needy families before Thanksgiving. Arts chair Diana De Armas added a special touch this year by donating dozens of Thanksgiving cards for members to sign and use as tags for the baskets. She also donated two beautiful Thanksgiving

floral arrangements that were auctioned to raise funds for the dental clinic. That same evening, CGWC members donated enough toiletries and feminine items to fill 71 gift bags for Agape Women, another outreach project these industrious women take on every year. Club members also took advantage of a picture-perfect fall Saturday morning, Nov. 14, to raise funds for the Arthritis Foundation. The CGWC Team joined dozens of others participating in a charity walk through Crandon Park on Key Biscayne. Team Members included captain Mireya Kilmon, Charo Bolanos, Ana Lam, Lisa Lesperance, Maria Hofbauer and Mario Gonzalez. For more information on how you can join this service organization whose membership comes from all over the county, go online to <www.coralgableswomansclub.org>. District 6990 Rotary Clubs joined forces for a golf tournament and golf ball drop at the Biltmore Hotel on Thursday, Nov. 12, raising more than $42,000 to help fulfill the district’s commitment to Rotary International for Bill and Melinda Gates’ $200 million challenge grant to eradicate polio worldwide. Rotarians from around the district joined Coral Gables Rotarians who relocated their Thursday lunch meeting to accommodate golfers with a lovely buffet on The Biltmore’s back lawn. Those who came for lunch stayed to see hundreds of golf balls dropped from a helicopter on the driving range hoping the balls they purchased might be closest to the hole to win fabulous prizes. Gables Rotarian Chris Morrison, a very happy Stanford alum after a football win over Southern California (USC), and a host of other sponsors and individuals helped set a new revenue record for this event. Outreach by this Rotary Club of Coral Gables also is ongoing. You will find them calling bingo at the VA hospital, serving

BY VIVIANA WIEWALL In an effort to address a need for men and women to lead America’s soldiers, the U.S. Army hosted an Influencer Information Session at the Hotel Intercontinental in downtown Miami on Oct. 29 to educate Miami community leaders and young adults on what it means to be an Army officer and how to become one. The Army has been successful in meeting its recruitment mission for enlisted soldiers but the challenge now is to ensure there are a sufficient number of officers to lead them. The speakers at the Oct. 29 event — all local Army Officers — shared their personal experiences and joined a discussion about how to encourage young adults to take advantage of
leadership opportunities in the Army Officer Corps. Invited guests included host Adam Kuperstein; Coral Gables Mayor Don Slesnick; Mark E. Meranda, vice president of Turner Construction; William K. Beesting, PhD, assistant dean of Florida International University; Alex Rodriguez, owner of Argo Management Inc., and Walter Cegelka, PhD Education chair of St. Thomas University. They were among other community leaders throughout Miami, as well as students and young adults who are interested in learning about what it means to become an Army Officer. The Army Officership program launched in August will engage leaders in a series of panel discussions and information sessions across the country.

The University of Miami Police, Coral Gables Police and Coral Gables Fire Departments are collaborating with several University of Miami student, faculty and staff organizations, departments and individuals on a unified annual holiday toy drive this season. In an effort to build a stronger bond between the departments and the university community, all involved entities are making one large concerted effort to collect, wrap, and distribute toys to children who may not otherwise receive any. Collection of unwrapped toys will continue through Friday, Dec. 18. Several donation bins and acceptance points are located around the University of Miami’s Coral Gables campus. The main acceptance point is the University of Miami’s Police Station located on the ground floor of the Flipse Building/Ponce de Leon Parking Garage at 5665 Ponce de Leon Blvd. in Coral Gables. Most often, children in need were at the core of her philanthropic work. Before her husband, Paul, died after battling Mesothelioma nine years ago, he mentored Lynn on the running of Bauer Financial. It continues to be a premier Coral Gables-based firm that has been analyzing banks nationwide since 1983. Lynn continued in Paul’s footsteps, running the business with an executive staff of women who she considers family. From acting as legal guardian to an elderly infirmed couple years ago to helping local youth groups, schools and volunteering endless hours for Kiwanis projects, her days are filled with acts of love. Four years ago, the plight of an orphanage in Samisragudem, India came to her attention. They were saved from the mean streets where Sunil had found them and taken them in.

For university community members short on time or unable to easily leave campus, the University of Miami Bookstore located in the University Center sells many items that would make great gifts such as toys, sports equipment, accessories and personal effects. A toy drop bin is located conveniently next to the registers so items can be purchased and donated at the same time. Anyone interested in donating a unique toy gift to a specific child in need may do so through the “Holiday Hope Tree” partner program coordinated by the Butler Center for Service and Leadership and the Division of Student Affairs. Lynn, whom the orphans call “Mom Lynn,” and her cadre of generous friends addressed the home’s immediate needs digging deep into their own pockets to make frequent trips to visit the orphanage and assess needs. After creating a foundation to support their efforts, they have held several high profile fundraisers in the Gables bringing in an elephant for one that was the talk of the town. Those events have helped raise funds to buy land and construct a brand new home this past year with a second story to accommodate 60 children soon to come. Bauer has become a celebrity at Miami Christian School, where charitable work is highly valued and encouraged. After hearing a presentation by Bauer about the plight of Sunil’s children, the elementary students adopted the home. On any given day, you will find them holding lemonade and cookie stand fundraisers, collecting gifts, sending photos to their pen pals, and selling produce from their organic garden to donate to Sunil’s Home. This is because Lynn Bauer, whom they revere, has shared her passion and blessed them with an opportunity to serve others. Bauer’s legacy of giving and caring are boundless. From the local ACE Academy to Sunil’s Home in India, her desire to help the less fortunate, her love of mankind, and her passion for life have truly made the world a better place.

Following lunch, guests went on an All Access Pass VIP Tour of all the campus’ facilities. At each stop of the tour, guests dropped off their business cards and were entered to win a 27-inch HD TV, overnight stays at the hotels and certificates at Champions Sports Bar, Cane Fire Grille or Starbucks.
“The three hotels on this campus exemplify the latest design concepts, technology and food and beverage offerings for each of the brands — Marriott, Courtyard and Residence Inn — and have been a huge hit with our guests” Marriott said. “Together with Thayer Lodging, we are excited to offer travelers to Miami the best of three brands on one campus.” The Marriott Miami Airport Campus is located just one mile from Miami International Airport and offers unsurpassed convenience and affordability for driven business and leisure travelers. The University of Miami Fieldhouse, a multipurpose facility at the Coral Gables campus, has been honored for its sustainability components. It was awarded the LEED Gold designation established by the U.S. Green Building Council and verified by the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI). LEED is the nation’s preeminent program for the design, construction and operation of high performance “green” buildings. “The university is committed to energy conservation and the reduction of energy dependency,” said Eduardo A. Lopez, senior project manager of UM Facilities, Design and Construction Department. “The benefits of a LEED certified structure are the lower operation cost resulting from the use of high efficient components and developing the mindset to design and build energy and environmental sustainable structures that reduce energy consumption and dependency.” The UM Field House achieved LEED certification specifically for its energy use, lighting, water and material use as well as incorporating a variety of other sustainable strategies. By using less energy and water, LEED certified buildings save money for families, businesses and taxpayers; reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and contribute to a healthier environment for residents, workers and the larger community. “The green building movement offers an unprecedented opportunity to respond to the most important challenges of our time, including global climate change, dependence on non-sustainable and expensive sources of energy and threats to human health,” said Rick
Fedrizzi, president, CEO and founding chair, U.S. Green Building Council. “The work of innovative building projects such as the University of Miami Fieldhouse is a fundamental driving force in the green building movement.” LEED Certification of the UM fieldhouse was based on a number of green design and construction features that positively impact the project itself and the broader community. These features include: • High reflectance roofing materials and pavers; • High efficiency plumbing fixtures with hand sensors to reduce water use; • Moisture sensors to reduce potable water use for irrigation; • Energy efficient lighting, insulated glazing and high efficiency air conditioning aimed at reducing the building’s energy cost based on the Florida Energy Code; • The use of recycled, refurbished, salvaged or reused materials, as well as the use of regional materials processed and manufactured regionally; • Paints, coatings and adhesives with low emitting gases content; • All lighting systems are occupancy motion controlled, and • Preferred parking for low emitting and fuel efficient vehicles. The UM Fieldhouse, which opened in March 2009, sits adjacent to the BankUnited Center at the UM Coral Gables campus. The building is 29,697 square feet and serves dual functions: to house the basketball courts for the university’s basketball teams and to assist in a variety of university and students events, including commencement ceremonies. Line Drive Performance trains winning athletes BY PAT FULTON Just an A-Rod home run from S. Dixie Highway (US1) is a place where children of all ages — and adults, too — can hit baseballs (or softballs) and test their indoor speed and agility. Line Drive Performance is the creation of Gator Rebhan, a Miami native whose life in baseball started at age 6. Today he is the running coach and head coach for South Florida’s largest girls fast-pitch travel softball program. What could have been a warehouse has been transformed into a comfortable, airconditioned facility for baseball and softball training, where parents can watch the workouts and the personal training for general fitness and competitive sports. In the batting cages, one token purchases 18 automated pitches. Private batting, pitching, and catching lessons for baseball and softball are available for all ages. Rebhan won All-County honors for baseball at Killian High School. He went on to play baseball for Miami-Dade College and University of New Orleans. As baseball coach at Palmetto Senior High, he combined with Booster Club president Ron Nentwig in 2004 to

acquire a home field for the school’s baseball program. The newly opened training facility operates Mondays through Fridays from 2 to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Personal training is available by appointment for one-on-one or group coaching. The typical training
plan follows an individual profile created to meet individual goals. Manny Fonseca, South Miami strength and conditioning coach, puts his clients through their paces with medicine balls, weight machines, and other state-of-theart equipment to build speed, power, strength, flexibility and agility. Fluorescent
orange cones form an obstacle course to develop leg strength and ability. Fonseca, who charts each student’s progress, recommends three-a-week workouts, noting that in the early stages of a personal program, “There are both learning and conditioning phases, with a steady build-up of aerobic capacity. “It may take two to six months for a person to get over the first barrier in program development before new goals are set,” said Fonseca, a Fitness Boot Camp instructor. Visitors to Line Drive Performance have included Danny Cook of the San Francisco Giants baseball team as well as local high school football players. Rebhan’s 5-year-old son Hunter works out regularly in the batting cages. Rebhan sees that his mission is to build confidence and self-esteem in those who work out at Line Drive Performance. He wants to enable baseball and softball players to perform at their highest level of potential. When he describes his life’s work, he says, “This is not like a real job; I get paid for something I enjoy doing.” Line Drive Performance is located at 13080 SW 85 Ave. Rd.; telephone 305259-8600. Author’s novel captures final days of World War II BY PAGE SIMON
This November, Jeff Shaara returned with No Less Than Victory (Ballantine Books), the magisterial conclusion of his acclaimed, New York Times bestselling World War II trilogy. In No Less Than Victory, Shaara, whose books have been hailed as “paeans to the American fighting man” by the Los Angeles Times, vividly portrays the European war’s unforgettable and harrowing final act, from the Battle of the Bulge to Germany’s unconditional surrender. After the success of the Normandy invasion, the Allied commanders are buoyantly confident that the war in Europe will be over in a matter of weeks, that Hitler and his battered army have no other option than surrender. But despite the advice of his best military minds, Hitler will hear no talk of defeat. In mid-December 1944, the Germans launch a desperate and ruthless counteroffensive in the Ardennes forest, utterly surprising the unprepared Americans who stand in their way. Through the frigid snows of the mountainous terrain, German tanks and infantry struggle to realize Hitler’s goal: divide the Allied armies and capture the vital port at Antwerp. The attack succeeds in opening up a wide gap in the American lines, and for days chaos reigns in the Allied command. Thus begins the Battle of the Bulge, the their enemy, and through the last gasp by Hitler’s forces eyes of Germany’s old soldier, that becomes a horrific slugGerd von Rundstedt, and ging match, some of the most Hitler’s golden boy, Albert brutal fighting of the war. Self-Representation in a Criminal Case There are many reasons why some defendants may wish to represent themselves in a criminal trial. Although it is usually wise to get a defense lawyer, sometimes it's not necessary. The key to deciding if you need a lawyer is to look at the punishment you'll face if convicted. The harsher the potential punishment, the more important it is that you are represented by counsel. Why Some Defendants Want to Represent Themselves Defendants may choose to represent themselves for a variety of reasons: • Some defendants can afford to hire a lawyer, but don't do so because they think the likely punishment is not severe enough to justify the expense. • Some defendants may plan to plead guilty to an offense whose sentence never varies, and they realize that hiring a lawyer will do them little good. • Some defendants believe (often mistakenly) that an attorney who represented them previously was not competent, and might do just as well on their own. • Some defendants believe that lawyers are part of an oppressive system and seek to make a political statement by representing themselves. • Some defendants who are in jail awaiting trial can gain privileges through self-representation, such as access to the jail's law library. Self-represented defendants are • not bound by lawyers' ethical codes. This means that a defendant who represents himself can delay proceedings and sometimes wreak havoc on an already overloaded system by repeatedly filing motions. However, this approach is not recommended because it often backfires. Choosing to Represent Yourself While it's not usually a good idea for a criminal defendant to represent himor herself, it may make sense in some situations. The most obvious rule is that the less severe the charged crime, the safer it is for a defendant to self-represent. For example, defendants charged with minor traffic offenses or shoplifting may get by without hiring an attorney, while defendants charged with violent offenses or felonies should rarely be without one. Some crimes have sentences that appear relatively minor, but the conviction may have serious repercussions later. For example, convictions for some vehicular offenses may result in increased insurance rates. Or, if the defendant reoffends, the sentence for the second conviction may be
much more severe than the first offense. So before deciding whether to hire an attorney, defendants should try to learn what the punishment is likely to be if they are convicted, both immediately and in the future (if the defendant is arrested or convicted for a similar crime), and whether there are collateral consequences, such as insurance rate hikes. Find Out the Likely Punishment It can be difficult to learn about common sentencing practices. Typical sentences aren't usually listed in statutes or court rules. (Sentencing in federal court is a big exception, though judges aren't bound by those guidelines.) However, some states do have what are called determinate sentencing laws. These laws provide specific sentences (or a range of sentences) for each crime. Other states have indeterminate sentencing laws, which allow the judge to sentence an offender for a period of time between a minimum sentence and a maximum sentence. If a defendant wants to find out what the punishment is likely to be if convicted, the defendant might take the following steps: • Pay a private defense attorney who handles cases in that court for an hour of consultation. An experienced defense attorney can often make accurate predictions as to likely punishment. • Ask a relative or close friend who is an attorney for informal, unpaid advice. • Talk to an attorney from the public defender's office. Representing Yourself at the Arraignment In most criminal courts, the arraignment is where the defendant first appears before a judge and enters a plea of guilty or not guilty to the offense charged. Assuming the defendant plans to enter a plea of not guilty, which almost every defendant does at this early stage, the court will then: • Set a date for the next procedural event in the case • Consider any bail requests the defendant or the prosecutor makes (usually if the defendant is at liberty -- not in jail -- at the arraignment, the defendant will continue at liberty without a change in bail status) • Appoint a lawyer for the defendant upon the defendant's request and a showing of eligibility, and Most people can handle an arraignment without a lawyer. However, if the defendant can get the court to appoint a lawyer for him or her without having to delay the arraignment, or the defendant is able to arrange for private representation before the arraignment, having a lawyer at this stage is always better. Jonathan Blecher is a former state prosecutor and a criminal defense attorney with offices in the Downtown Dadeland area. He has 27 years of criminal law experience. Experience the difference at FLEMING’S RESTAURANT - STILL TRADITIONAL WITH NEW UPDATED STYLE By Julianne Power – Independent Restaurant Critic If you have not been to Fleming’s lately its time to come in and see the classy, warm ambiance that reflects the new and also keeping to their traditional quality service and one-of-a-kind dining experience. After experiencing a facelift from Chef Gordon Ramsay (Hell’s Kitchen, Kitchen Nightmares), one thing is hard to change and that is the exceptional food that Fleming’s is noted for. Subsequent to a brief change in menu, upon ordering any entrée they have brought back the crudités (fresh veggie plate with outstanding dipping sauce), soup de jour and traditional Caesar salad that comes with all meals. They have also brought back their famed dessert display with a wonderful selection of such traditional tasty treats as the apple walnut pie, marzipan, napoleon and more for us to indulge. Chef Orlando Casanova has also added his offerings to the variety of dinners with scrumptious tastes and presentation and daily specials. Fleming has a complete and well priced wine list to compliment any occasion or meal. There is also a full liquor bar where there friendly bartender can make anything from a classic cocktail to one of their specialty drinks. I visited Fleming’s for dinner with a friend recently so I could personally see what changes and non-changes had been made. As we entered the establishment we were greeted by Owners Andy Hall and wife Suzanne Thomas-Hall, who obviously after owning the establishment for the last 8 years, have created a restaurant to reflect their vision without compromising the integrity of Fleming’s tradition. You are sure to meet one or both of them during any of your visits to their restaurant, as they are its heart and soul. Noticing the rich browns and “Bird’s in Flight” theme as the new décor, we were instantly relaxed. As we sat at our table, a menu, wine list and a sheet with their weekly specials was presented. We picked the right night! On Wednesday’s the special was half priced bottles of wine (ALL WINES!). As water was poured and a crudités was given, our server immediately came to our table and asked what we would like to drink. I am not one to necessarily match my wine to my meal since I am a Merlot type of gal, I spotted a Bogle Merlot and ordered the bottle (for half price!). While our server pre-
sented and poured the Merlot, we reviewed the menu. They also have small plate specials on Wednesday’s which is an extension of their existing list of appetizers. We ordered a Steak Blue and a Blackened Mahi. We enjoyed our wine while waiting for the appetizers which came in a short time and looked delicious. The Steak Blue was steak medallions served in a marvelous blue cheese sauce and the Blackened Mahi presentation was great and served with a dipping sauce. Next we ordered our entrees. I ordered the Lamb Chop’s medium and substituted a Wedge salad for an additional $3.00 forgoing the Caesar. My friend ordered their Roasted Duck. After taking our orders we were given a bread basket and a cup of the soup de jour, which on this day was corn chowder. The soup was hot and mouth-watering filled with diced potato and corn. As our server cleared the empty soup bowls we were then presented with a traditional Caesar salad and my Wedge salad. The salads were served fresh and very tasty. Now we were in anticipation for the main courses. My Lamb Chop was cooked to perfection served with a mint chimichurri, sundried tomatoes atop couscous. My friend received her duck and was taken aback by how big the portion was. The half of duck was served with apples, prunes roasted potato and a traditional red cabbage that tasted perfect. By this time we were certainly filled and satisfied. But wait! Now it was time for coffee and dessert! We were directed to Fleming’s Dessert display to see if we could fit another bite. They had a selection of approximately eight desserts that I was told changes daily. Hmmmmm, there it was, a chocolate cake lover’s dream……Chocolate Mousse Cake. My friend and I decided to make room and share this dessert with coffee. YUMMY! As we finished our dining experience, we were presented with a check and could not believe the amount of food and drink we received for the price. Fleming’s has been a best-kept secret in the neighborhood of Pinecrest for 25 years offering its patrons “the best bang for your buck” while keeping a “fine-dining” experience. Fleming’s is located on the East side of US-1 in a quaint, quiet strip of businesses behind the Home Depot and Office Max on SW 136th street.

2009 BMW Z4 is all new with retractable hardtop Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS The 2009 version of BMW’s Z4 two-seat sports car is really something special. It’s the second generation of the Z4 (the Z3 debuted in 1996) and it’s an all-new vehicle, right up to the nifty retractable hardtop. The new retractable hardtop model replaces both the roadster and coupe versions of previous generation Z4 models. The new retractable hardtop closes and opens in 20 seconds with the press of a button and provides better security, rigidity, rear visibility, quiet and protection from the weather than was available with the old ragtop. This latest Z4 is built on the same wheelbase as its predecessor, but it’s about six inches longer in the tail and the lines are softer. Chalk up the added length to the need to accommodate the hardware for the retractable hardtop. This Z4 sits low to the ground and has classic roadster styling, with a long hood and a short decklid, with
curves and creases that caress the front fenders and curve to the rear wheels. The 2009 Z4 comes in two models, the sDrive30i and sDrive35i (sDrive means rear wheel drive). The 30i is distinguished by the black vanes in the grille and a silver slash across the outer lower bars, while the 35i has matte-silver grille vanes. The sDrive30i (18/25) starts at $45,750 and comes with a 255-hp 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission; a six-speed sport automatic with paddle shifters is an option for an extra $1,325. The sDrive35i (17/25 mpg) is a bit pricier at $51,650, but you get a little more bang for your buck. It comes with a 300-hp 3.0liter inline six with twin turbochargers and is mated to a six-speed manual tranny, with a seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual gearbox as an option for an extra $1,525. As for comparables, the new Z4 is a slightly longer than the Mercedes-Benz SLK and Audi TT, but shorter than the Porsche Boxster. The sport seats are tight, but comfortable and there is plenty of room for two adults. The head and legroom really are quite spacious for a two-seat sports car and the standard manual seats and tilt-telescoping steering column allow for enough

adjustment to accommodate most drivers. On the inside, everything is driverfocused, with easy-to-read white-on-black analog instrumentation, functional controls and a nice combination of sport and elegance. The 30i comes with black leatherette upholstery, while the 35i offers real leather and four color options. Low-gloss brushed aluminum or ash wood trim is standard on the 35i and may be ordered for the 30i.
Audio options include HD radio, satellite radio, glovebox-mounted six-disc DVD changer, iPod and USB ports and a sound system with 14 speakers and an amplifier capable of delivering 650 watts.
