City saves money, conserves water in municipal fountains BY BELKYS PEREZ
F
or many years now, the City of Coral Gables has been exploring ways to become more environmentally friendly. The city cuts expenses and conserves energy by using compact fluorescent bulbs, replacing ballasts, using emails instead of printing and experimenting with biofuels. Four years ago, the city embarked on a major undertaking by placing all city fountains on water recirculation systems. Up until that point, all fountains basically worked like an open faucet, wasting tap or well water. As a result, the

Gables Garden Club hosts ‘Treasures Under the Oaks’ BY ROSALIND MOORE

his year’s Coral Gables Garden Club Holiday Home and Garden Tour was a tremendous success, as more than 700 who attended had the unique opportunity to visit some of the most historic homes along Coral Way. The theme, “Treasures Under the Oaks,” seemed a perfect choice because everyone saw not only beautiful oaks and other lawn plantings but toured five stunning houses. Co-chairs of the recent event, Sharon Trbovich and Mary Young, chose Coral Way where the scenic Coral Way corridor was built in 1922, connecting the City of Miami to Coral Gables with citrus-lined streets, and where the original
Merrick frame house was built in 1899 and renovated in 1906. Barbara Reese, whose beautiful home was one of the tour locations, was the member who arranged for the Coral Way tour locations. There were long lines of people waiting to go through the Coral Gables Merrick House, where Coral Gables founder George Merrick lived when he grew up. Another popular tour was the Merrick Wedding Cottage where Merrick and his bride, Eunice Peacock, who was one of the founders of the Coral Gables Garden Club, moved after they were married in 1916. On the grounds of the Merrick House everyone enjoyed delicious

Parade highlights Junior Orange Bowl Festival events Gloria Burns GLORIA’S GAB The Junior Orange Bowl Festival is in full swing with events every week through early 2009. If you are looking for a great stocking stuffer, try buying tickets to the best show for kids in town, the 60th Annual Junior Orange Bowl Parade, scheduled for Dec. 30, 7:30 p.m., in downtown Coral Gables. This year’s parade, with a “Moon Over Miami,” theme promises to be one of the best ever. Look for several out of state as well as local marching bands, entertaining dance units, professional and amateur floats, and lots more. The new Frost Art Museum cost $16 million to build and has opened with a traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian, the “Modern Masters.” On hand to address the crowd of donors and other VIPs was FIU president Mitch Madique, trustee Rosa Sugranes, museum director Carol Damian and the museum namesake Patricia Frost. Showcased in 3,500 square feet of gallery space are 113 pieces, 70 from the Palleys’ collection, as well as works contributed by Janet and Joseph Shein, Joan Baxt and Ber nie Bercuson. The works are housed in four galleries, one named for Beaux Arts and another for the Matus Family. Make time during the holidays to

Carver Middle School received 360 atlases free for its students. South Miami Rotary Club’s president, Bill Enright, along with past presidents Linda Kaplan and Ellen Book, helped to distribute the atlases to sixth graders on Friday, Nov. 21, in conjunction with a geography quiz. The other school receiving an unexpected donation was Ace Academy, a school for high-risk students whose teachers are incredibly dedicated. The school was in great need of a television set and had been looking several months to have a used set donated. Black Friday held great bargains and, unable to resist a great price on a brand new television, Lynn Bauer just bought them a 32-inch flat screen. Along with her helpers, John and Ada Holian and this writer, Bauer happily surprised Cher yl Car rell’s English class on Dec. 1. Carrell expressed her gratitude and was delighted to be able to share an old classic movie on DVD with her students. The DVD had been sitting on her desk waiting to be viewed for a very long time; so, with the new set, Carrell changed the day’s lesson plan to try out their new set. Partnership for the Homeless welcomed Gables Rotarians where they helped serve Thanksgiving dinner to some 200 homeless people. This outreach was led by Rotarian J. Guarch. Among his helpers were his own family along with club president Abe Horowitz; Judy Pantoja; president-elect WiIey Hicks and his son Eric; Dan Guer rieri and his daughters; Jorge Suarez, his dad and sis-

Coral Gables Grillin’ Kiwanians were spotted at the Harvest Festival as well as the Coral Gables Tree Lighting Ceremony. This active group from the Coral Gables Club seem to be everywhere with that grill and have managed to raise a lot of money for charitable outreach through these efforts. If you attend an event where they are selling, you will find they have the best prices and terrific hot dogs and hamburgers. The GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club (CGWC) delivered food baskets all over Miami Dade County that included grocery store certificates to families of the many children who receive free dental care at the club’s May Van Sickle Dental Clinic. These busy women also participated in the SmartRide, a 165-mile bicycle ride for HIV related charities. Manning two water
stops decked out in crazy costumes to add to the festive nature of the ride, club members also cheered on Cour t Collier, husband of past president Michele Collier, who completed the ride. The Colliers also were among many who attended GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club’s Annual Holiday Party during which 11 new members were inducted. With a harpist providing background music and Teresita Cook Catering a scrumptious buffet, it was a great time for all to enjoy the season. Among the many preparing baskets for needy families and toiletry items for the woman of Agape, were Charo Bolanos, Debi W ilbor n, Vicki McGroar ty, Car men Suarez, Pam Schafer, Barbara Lapsley, Debra Adams, Claire Whitehurst, and Mireya Kilmon, to mention a few. Most everyone also came with gifts for the club’s upcoming party for the children of the club’s free dental clinic. Until next time, keep making each day count.

BY CRISTINA PLANAS As hurricane season came to an end, the Allen Morris Company celebrated with an event commemorating the raising of The Lady of Faith, the weather vane that had graced the top of its Alhambra Towers building until damaged by Hurricane Katrina. The 12-foot statue is a reproduction of the 16th Century-designed weather vane that stands atop the Giralda Tower of the Cathedral in Seville, Spain. The statue is nicknamed “Giraldillo,” Spanish for spinner, because the statue spins with the changing wind direction. After it was damaged during Katrina, the statue was sent to its creator, renowned sculpture Gary Rager, of Rager Studios in Orlando, who brought her back to original form. The statue is cast composite over stain-
less steel with a faux finish in bronze and copper. Rager Studios designed a specially engineered mechanical rolling system with space-age materials at the base of the statue, which allows it to move freely with wind. “It was a pleasure to be able to raise the beautiful ‘Giraldillo’ statue again to the summit of Alhambra Towers,” said W. Allen Morris, president and CEO of the Allen Morris Company. “The Lady of Faith is an important part of Alhambra Towers as the statue symbolizes strength, vigilance and a reminder, that especially in turbulent times ‘faith is supreme above all else,’” he added. “The Allen Morris Company has a history of classical architecture-inspired construction,” sculptor Rager said. “Allen [Morris] was very specific about the restoration process, and I’m

city’s water bill was large, not to mention an inefficient use of natural resources. “At the time Coral Gables was built, there were no recirculation systems available,” said Dallas Brown, Coral Gables facilities superintendent. “Fortunately, there are relatively inexpensive remedies that will allow the city to keep its beautiful fountains operational without depleting Mother Nature.” The city’s Public Works Department has been spearheading the water conservation project. Some construction is required to retrofit the fountains. The new measures save money and conserve water. One such example is the fountain located in the median of Alhambra Circle and Granada Boulevard. A twoyear before and after analysis shows the city consumed 54 percent less water, an equivalent of 1,395,020 gallons of water with a cost savings of $3,338.22 or 43

percent just on one fountain alone. Several of the city’s beautifully detailed fountains have been retrofitted since the project began. These are fountains at Miracle Mile on LeJeune Road, Granada Boulevard on Alhambra Circle, and Coral Way on Granada Boulevard. Out of the 35 city-maintained fountains, 13 still need to be converted. During its recent restoration project, a new and more efficient recirculation system was installed at the DeSoto Fountain. This fiscal year, the City of Coral Gables also is on track to modify four fountains at the Columbus Boulevard Plaza located at Coral Way and an additional four fountains at Country Club Prado. The city’s newer fountains do not require the conversion because they were built with a recirculation system that allows for water conservation. respected attorney with the firm of Sullivan Admire and Sullivan, a familyowned firm that specializes in estate planning, probate and real estate since 1950. Despite a heavy workload, he always manages to make time for giving back to his community. Admire and his wife, Pam, have two grown children, Bobby and Tricia, both graduates of the University of Miami. That speaks volumes for UM as John Admire is a loyal University of Florida Gator attending UF for both undergraduate and law school. Admire’s commitment to the community began early on as joined various civic organizations. Among his many activities were volunteering for the Junior Orange Bowl Committee (JOBC) where he was elected to membership and later became president. The JOBC was most fortunate to have this man as its president during a difficult financial period almost 20 years ago. Thanks, in large part to his devotion and hard work, Admire set the committee back on a successful path and continues to do so to this day. While most presidents take a back seat after serving, Admire went on to help co-found the JOBC International Chess Tournament and, for the past six years, he has served as the Junior Orange
Bowl’s legal council. Of course, his JOBC participation is just the tip of the iceberg. Admire also is a former member of the City of Coral Gables Board of Adjustment, City of Coral Gables Trial Board, City of Coral Gables Insurance Advisory Board, City of Coral Gables Cable TV Board and served as a City of Coral Gables Zoning Compliance hearing officer. He has served as president of the South Miami-Kendall Jaycees and was a Jaycees district director. He is a former board member of the Donors Forum of South Florida. In addition, he was a longtime coach of Little League Baseball. In 2007, Admire was a finalist for the Coral Gables Citizen of the Year and was honored at a luncheon organized by the Rotary Club of Coral Gables. He also makes time to serve his church, Christ the King Lutheran, where he is not only a member of the church council but also is a high school Sunday school teacher. Admire is one of those individuals for whom the old saying, “If you want something done, ask a busy person to do it,” is applicable. From family and work commitments to church and community, Admire’s presence is felt everywhere.

60th anniversary JOB Parade promises variety, lots of fun BY LEE STEPHENS With only weeks remaining until the big day, the Junior Orange Bowl Committee expects a wide variety of exciting entries in this year’s Junior Orange Bowl Parade on Dec. 30. That evening the streets of Downtown Coral Gables will be filled with the lights and sounds of the 60th annual Junior Orange Bowl Parade. Many units from across the state of Florida are in this year’s lineup, creating a balance of new units and returning favorites. Some of the marching bands that parade-goers can tap their feet to this year are the Hialeah Drum Corp, Hialeah Springs Pathfinders, and Miami Northwestern Senior High School, among others. For those who like to take things a little slower, several floats and walking units will glide by, including those from the City of Hialeah, Homestead Rodeo Association, Five-Star Flashettes, as well as the Girl Scouts of Tropical Florida and 501st Legion Florida Garrison, both on foot. There’s no need to worry about being out after dark, either, because the Miami Police Honor Guard and Coral Gables Law Enforcement are joining in on the parade-night hoopla. Adding to the variety, spectators can expect to see several hundred Orange
Bowl cheerleaders and football players, as well as a group dressed in Star Wars costumes. Animal lovers will enjoy seeing the South Florida Trail Riders horses; Dalmatian Rescue members, and “Prince,” the albino python, joining in once again this year with his human buddy, Ron Magill of Miami Metrozoo. A lively, pre-parade show featuring the Florida Circus Art School Inc., a “Cirque du Ole” acrobatics act, will be available to grandstand ticket holders, just before the parade begins. BY CAROLYN POPESCU Coral Gables Hospital recently unveiled its newly renovated Intensive Care Unit (ICU) inviting city officials, physicians, hospital staff and other VIPs to tour the new facility. The renovations, which took six months to complete, created 16 new private rooms and updated existing facilities including new beds, equipment and more. The renovations have helped streamline services and give patients more privacy and comfort. “We are very proud of the new ICU at Coral Gables Hospital,” said Jay Miranda, CEO. “The facility brings together new technology with a new look enabling us to offer quality care for our patients.” The new ICU also features the Stryker InTouch Critical Care Hospital bed, one of the first high acuity care bed to offer advanced technology, intuitive operation and BackSmart ergonomics to benefit both patients and caregivers. The InTouch bed offers a variety of new features and benefits to ensure
maximum comfort for the patient as well making protocol compliance easier for caregivers. The InTouch bed also features a translation option, which translates a variety of clinical phrases to 12 different languages to help physicians and nursing staff communicate with patients who speak limited English. Aesthetic magazine. “I’ve been doing this procedure for about six months,” he said. “It can be done on any scar, any place on the body including the face. If a women wants to come in and have a C-Section scar done, it’s actually an easy procedure. This, in a sense, has revolutionized scar revision surgery.” Dr. Sachs said the procedure causes little pain. Those who have had the surgery say the site might ache and, while he gives pain medication prescriptions to the patients, few of them actually fill the prescription. “It’s pain free in the majority of patients and those who experience pain, it’s very minor in nature,” he said. “There is little downtime at all. The next day postoperatively, you’re back in the gym. Dr. Mark Sachs is a versatile guy, having trained in ophthalmology, internal medicine, and infectious disease and immunology. He is founder of the Sculptra Skin and Laser Center in downtown Miami and an expert in liposuction. “I’ve been doing surgery on and off for 20 years,” Dr. Sachs said, adding that two years ago he started specializing in cosmetic surgery. He also is well known for his work in immunology and his work on how skin fights infection and heals itself. Practicing in all those areas helped Dr. Sachs develop a new procedure that can reduce scars. “Nobody else does this procedure and it’s incredibly effective,” he said. “It’s all done under local anesthesia.” In the past, reducing scars was an invasive procedure; it didn’t take care of the entire scar such as those from CSections. But the new procedure results in a 90 percent improvement without the dangers and the down time. According to Dr. Sachs, the new twopart procedure came out of a careful study of the anatomy and physiology of scar formation and the emergence of cutting edge technology such as Syneron’s ELOS (electric-optical synergy) equipment. Basically, he melts the adhesions and when it heals, he blasts off the top of the scar and shaves it off. “I make an incision and I infuse Lanicaine under the scar through the fat layer,” he said. “Then I put the laser into the fat layer and melt all the adhesions that are holding the scar to the fat and muscle underneath the scar. That lifts the scar off.” He said by lifting the scar, 40-50 percent of the discoloration disappears. “In part two, I take a new type of laser. It actually destroys skin,” he says. “I shave off the top of the scar.” Part two takes place two to three weeks after the first session. “When that is done, about 70-90 percent of the scar is gone,” he said. Dr. Sachs said he noticed after doing a lot of liposuction that abdominal incisions got better after the liposuction. He asked for volunteers and developed the procedure. The effectiveness has been documented and is now available to the general public. The procedure is so new and so interesting that it has been written about in

Kendall Animal Clinic specializes in pet dermatological problems BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD Dr. Richard Rogoff has been practicing veterinary medicine in Miami since 1970. He has been in the Kendall area since the early ’70s, first at the Kendall Animal Hospital in the Kendall Mall and then across Kendall Drive at the Kendall Animal Clinic. He moved to that location after Hurricane Andrew severely damaged the shopping center. Before Hurricane Andrew, Dr. Deborah Colker had worked with Dr. Rogoff at the hospital. “We both love what we do,” Colker said. When they moved across the street, the two became partners in the clinic. “We’re both small animal practioners,” Rogoff said. “I have a specialty interest in dermatology and Dr. Colker has a specialty in feline medicine and surgery.” Rogoff is a member of the American Academy of Veterinary Dermatology and Colker is a member of the American Association of Feline Practitioners and the 1995 president of the South Florida Veterinary Medical Association, and an executive board member of the Dade County Veterinary Foundation. Between the two, they have more than 50 years of

highly skilled in both areas. “It’s like a marriage,” he said. “We have been together for years. Mark di Suvero sculptures at Fairchild through May By Amanda Paz Paz Renowned artist Mark di Suvero’s enormous steel sculptures are towering over Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden’s world famous flowering trees and vines, lush rainforest and bustling butterfly garden. Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden recently opened “Mark di Suvero at Fairchild,” an outdoor exhibition of five massive sculptures including the never before exhibited Olompali, to coincide with the famed international art fair, Art Basel Miami Beach. The exhibition will remain on view at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, 10901 Old Cutler Rd. in Coral Gables, through May 31, 2009. The sculptures in the exhibition are on loan from the Mark di Suvero Collection. The five pieces being displayed among Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden’s landscapes are: Olompali (2006), a 30-foot
sculpture making its international debut at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden before being shipped to China where it will be permanently located at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing; Gnarly (2008), a 27foot sculpture of twisting, turning steel; the bright red Rust Angel (1995), made from a single plate of steel; Neruda’s Gate (2005), 26 feet high, and She (1977-78), an interactive piece measuring 52 feet wide. With its wooden swinging bed, She is an example of Mark di Suvero’s desire to make touchable and accessible art with which people can interact. Cabo San Lucas — sun and beauty in the Tropic of Cancer BY JOSE DELFINO The Tropic of Cancer is located at the northernmost latitude where the sun appears directly overhead at noon during the June solstice when the earth’s northern hemisphere is tilted toward the sun to its maximum. Cabo San Lucas at the southernmost point of the Baja California peninsula in Mexico is just a few miles south. At the end of October, the temperature is still high (97 degrees Fahrenheit), but the air is very dry. The rainy season is gone, and the deserted hills and dunes are covered with a multitude of beautiful wild flora, like a temporary dressing of the permanent cactus forest that covers most of the land. The flight from Miami to Mexico City is about three hours, and then from Mexico City to the Aeropuerto Internacional El Cabo is another hour-and-15-minute flight. From the airport to Cabo San Lucas, it’s about a 30-minute trip in a shuttle van that takes tourists to their respective destination resort along the beautiful beaches of the peninsula. The charge for this service is $15 for each passenger. The big attraction of Cabo San Lucas is the ocean and the weather. There is a blue sky all the time, and a low humidity that leaves everything pristine and clear, just perfect for photography. At 7:15 a.m., the sun rises majestically, painting the ocean surf with a spectrum of color. We stayed at the Me Cabo Nikki Beach Meliá Resort, located right on the Médano Beach and very close to where all the action is, just six blocks from downtown Cabo San Lucas. It consists of a small town with many different types of tourist shops, handicrafts, bazaars, Mexican restaurants and a large established marina with a very impressive fleet of sport fishing yachts. The Me Cabo Nikki Beach Meliá Resort provides great service and has beautiful décor. The rooms are quite large, with wonderful views of the bay, the rocky arch and the mountains at the end of the peninsula. It is Cabo’s signature photograph. Médano Beach is one of the best beaches in the area. Others are not so friendly for swimmers because there are too many jagged rocks or swimming may not be allowed because of strong riptides. I suggest that you check with the hotel before booking your reservation. The history of Cabo San Lucas as a destination resort is relatively short. In the 1960s, the community consisted of only a fish cannery and a small town dominated by people who made their living from the sea. It wasn’t until the ’70s seventies that

Cabo San Lucas began to attract the attention of the tourism industry, when the area’s reputation as a place to go sport fishing for marlin began to draw wealthy anglers from around the world. Today, Cabo San Lucas is considered one of the top marlin fishing destinations in the world. During our stay, we witnessed a great three-day fishing tournament that saw prizes of more than $2 million awarded. Renting a car for a day is a good idea. There is a scenic all-day tourist circuit that you can drive from Cabo San Lucas to La Paz, the capital of South Baja California. You’ll travel along the west coast of the peninsula as you leave, then return on the eastern side with many interesting stops along the way, including the small town of Migriño about 45 minutes from Cabo San Lucas. Then Todos los Santos appears and you can stop at the Hotel California, the hotel that the Eagles made famous in song. Enjoying a cold “Margarita” on the rocks with some “tortillas y salsa de guacamole” is an absolute must! At the town of Los Barriles, you’ll find a rustic straw-roofed restaurant called El Barrilito that serves Huachinango frito, a deep-fried whole snapper. The food is great, the service is excellent and the prices are quite pleasing. A 24-hour compact car rental (we got a Nissan Tiida, known as the Versa in the U.S.) will cost you about $60 including insurance. The

La Roca del Pelícano (The Pelican Rock), where there are many varieties of parrot fish, angels, snappers and many more. highway is in very good condition and there are many signs to guide you in the right direction. If you like diving, there is very good snorkeling and scuba action in a place called “La Roca del Pelícano” (The Pelican Rock) not to far from the arch where there are many varieties of parrot fish, angels, snappers and hundreds more. For evening dining, we especially enjoyed La Oficina, a very nice restaurant located right on the seashore just a couple of blocks south of the Me Cabo Meliá Hotel. The tables and chairs are placed right on the sand and guests are beautifully surrounded by burning torches and local folk décor. A Mexican sommelier named Rambo visits the tables feeding shots of tequila to the customers. Later in the evening, there is a stage with great Mariachis and folkloric dances from ancient times to compliment the excellent cuisine and wonderful atmosphere. Tourism is the engine that drives Cabo
San Lucas. During our week-long stay, we saw the arrival of eight cruise liners – including ships from Carnival, Norwegian and Princess — make stops for a day or two. And while you may think this detracts from the beauty of the area, I think the ships really enhanced the view of the bay. Hole in the Wall Sub Co. offers a taste of Philly BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD If you are one of those people who is on a constant search for the best Philly Cheese steak sub outside of Philadelphia, then you have to go to the new Hole in the Wall Sub Co. shop in Palmetto Bay. “Our specialty is the Philadelphia cheese steak, both chicken and regular,” said shop owner and manager Rick Roca. “We probably have close to an 80 percent return customer rate. We have a good percentage of people who come every day.” The sub shop has been open about three months and has received terrific response from customers who are coming back again and again for the subs. Located at 14421 S. Dixie Hwy., in the Kings Bay Shopping center, the 30-seat restaurant is at the end of the breezeway, where the Purple Onion Club used to be. The shop opened officially on Sept. 10 although they did a soft opening a few days before that to test the market.
Roca said they did a pilot program for the subs before opening the shop. They worked out of a warehouse near the Kendall-Tamiami Executive Airport, doing pick-up and delivery only. “We wanted to see if we could make it,” he said. When they determined the food was good enough to be a hit, they opened in their new location. And where they did they come up with the name? Roca said whenever people talk about a great place to eat, they often say, “it’s just a little ‘hole in the wall,’ but with great food.” “We’re talking about a little place, very family oriented, a very friendly family environment,” he said. That is the image he wants people to conjure when they talk about his restaurant. One of the reasons Roca wanted to open his own place was that he believed that too often customers aren’t treated with the respect they deserve (cashiers are on their cell phones making personal calls or the waitress won’t pay atten-

As far as the menu, Roca said there are more than 20 different types of subs available. They also make quesadillas, salads and soups. They make some of the traditional Cuban sandwiches. “We do cold subs; we do them hot, and we have wraps as well,” he said. “It’s a pretty good variety.” Hole in the Wall does party catering. “We have a full variety of catering — party platters and up to nine-foot subs.” The 20-piece platters can feed from five to eight people depending on how hungry they are. “We are constantly running specials,” he said, adding that they have a variety of kids’ meals including hot dogs, ham and cheese sandwiches, peanut butter and jelly and bologna sandwiches. ”It’s a smaller sub and we’ll throw in a drink and chips with it.” Hole in the Wall opens at 10 a.m. seven days a week. An onsite plaque was unveiled in acknowledgement of the bank’s continuous support. In 2006, Mercantil Commercebank announced a long-term alliance with Miami Metrozoo and the Zoological Society of Florida (ZSF) to rename and upkeep its children’s zoo as the Mercantil Commercebank Children’s Zoo, offering interactive and animal encounters, and assisting with the zoo’s educational programs. The partnership included the construction of a three-dimensional entrance to the children’s zoo, its yearly maintenance, and the sponsorship of one of the zoo’s monorails. The Maguary Stork Exhibit sponsorship this year is an addition that consolidates the bank’s support for this important entertaining and educational venue in the community. Mercedes GL320 BlueTEC means ‘clean’ diesel power Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS Mercedes-Benz is staking a lot of capital on its new BlueTEC diesel technology, and with good reason. BlueTEC has been winning industry awards and accolades from all corners since the German automaker launched the program in an E-Class sedan two years ago. It was timed to coincide with the introduction of lowsulphur fuel in the United States. For those who haven’t read about it, BlueTEC is Mercedes’ new formula for powerful and clean diesel engines. Gone are the days of the noisy, smoky diesel; BlueTEC is highly efficient and quiet, and sharply reduces harmful nitrogen oxide and particle emissions. Just about 70 years ago, Mercedes-Benz became the first auto manufacturer to use the combustion-engine principle pioneered by Rudolf Diesel in a passenger car. Diesel technology even then had a
much higher efficiency than the traditional gasoline spark-ignition engine, and the diesel has been steadily improved over the years. A giant leap came in 1997 with the introduction of common-rail direct injection (CDI) technology in combination with the development of the four-valve engine system. Since then, the CDI abbreviation has meant both excellent fuel economy and a huge increase in torque, or towing power. With the introduction of the maintenance-free particulate filter in 2003, Mercedes-Benz overcame the last big objection to diesel power. The filter virtually eliminated soot particles and nitrogen oxide emissions. The first Mercedes passenger vehicle to get the new technology was an E320 in 2006. It was a success from the start and was voted “World Green Car of the Year” in 2007. Mercedes then launched the R320, ML320 and GL320 BlueTEC vehicles in the U.S. Most recently, the ML320 won the Southern Automotive Media Association award for being the best “Green” vehicle displayed at the South Florida International Auto Show. Mercedes now claims that its high-tech diesel engines meet the world’s toughest

exhaust emission limits and its AdBlue injection system makes the new BlueTEC sport utility vehicles the world’s cleanest diesel SUVs. Our test-vehicle for the week was the new full-size luxury GL320 SUV, and we came away with a new appreciation for diesel power and its use in a passenger vehicle. The 224-hp V-6 BlueTEC engine equipped with a maintenance-free diesel particulate filter is very responsive and it’s paired with Mercedes’ 4MATIC all-wheel drive system for excellent handling in any
road condition. Mercedes says the combination will deliver an average of 26 mpg. The Mercedes BlueTEC technology doesn’t come cheap. The ML320 BlueTEC starts at $49,475, the R320 BlueTEC at $50,025 and the GL320 BlueTEC begins at $59,075.

Salute to Education (STE), the scholarship program funded by the South Florida Ford and Lincoln Mercury dealers for the past 15 years, has announced that it is accepting applications online for the 2008-09 scholarship program. Deadline to submit the applications online is Jan. 30, 2009. This year, the South Florida Ford and Lincoln Mercury dealers will be awarding $160,000 in scholarships ($80,000 to 80 students in Miami-Dade County and $80,000 to 80 students in Broward County) to graduating high school seniors from Miami-Dade and Broward County public and private high schools. Students who apply must meet the criteria and requirements (list online) to apply for the scholarship. Students may apply online at <www.stescholarships.org>. Applicants must complete a series of questions, including four essays, as part of the application process. Scholarship guidelines require an applicant to choose a category in which he or she is qualified. The categories are Athletics, Language Arts and Foreign Language, Leadership/Service, Mathematics and Computer Science, Natural Science, Performing Arts and Visual Arts, Social Science, and Vocational/Technical. Only one category may be chosen. A Scholarship Committee comprised of community, civic and educational
leaders judges each application and selects 80 students from Miami-Dade County and another 80 students from Broward County. Scholarship recipients will be honored during the annual Salute to Education Scholarship Awards ceremony on June 6, 2009, at FIU’s Graham Center. “We recognize the tremendous potential in the students within our communities and we are committed to helping them pursue their dreams of a higher education,” said John Maggio, president of Salute to Education and general manager of Pines Lincoln Mercury. “With the consistent rise in college tuition, students have come to rely on scholarships like ours to help fund the next four years of schooling. Even with the current state of the economy, the South Florida Ford and Lincoln Mercury dealers are still committed to continuing this program and assisting high school seniors in South Florida with their educational goals.” The 20 Miami-Dade and Broward County Ford and Lincoln Mercury Dealers and Ford Motor Company have awarded over $3 million in scholarships to more than 3,000 deserving public and private high school seniors in both counties. Salute to Education is a nonprofit organization funded through dealership contributions and corporate support from Ford Division, Lincoln Mercury Division, Ford Credit and Ford Customer Service Division.
