he Junior Orange Bowl recently celebrated the unveiling of the organization’s 65th Parade theme with a reception at the Coral Gables Hyatt Regency. Members, friends and honored guests gathered as Junior Orange Bowl Parade chair Kathleen Kauffman and president Dr. Robert Bueso revealed the theme “Illumination Spectacular” for the annual community parade. The Junior Orange Bowl Parade is going back to its roots as a nighttime community event and this year’s anniversary celebration
promises to be unforgettable. “With this event, parade participants will have the opportunity to showcase their talents under the lights through beautiful downtown Coral Gables!” Kauffman said. This year’s parade date will be Sunday, Dec. 1, the first Sunday after Thanksgiving. “We hope that the new parade date will allow us to fill this year’s parade with many new and exciting floats, cultural marching units and spectacular visual performers.” Kauffman said. “The new date offers the Coral Gables community a fun-filled and family oriented

All that glitters is gold BY MARK TROWBRIDGE President & CEO Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce
It may come as no surprise to any of you that I have spent some time on stage. Not a Broadway stage or Off-Broadway stage or even a stage anywhere near Broadway or NYC or the like, but various local stages, or more accurately, low-slung risers. These gigs have ranged from graduation speeches, honor society inductions and live fundraising auctions to assorted emcee duties and even hosting a few beauty pageants. Yes, you heard me right — beauty pageants. Now, we Trowbridges never have been known for our own chiseled features and looks, unless you like stocky, pasty, outof-shape linebackers (and that’s just the women). But, what we lack in glitz and glam, we more than make up for in terms of hygiene, humor and hard work. Plus, we have over-the-top powers of keen observation and refined tastes that allow us to best understand what is cool and in fashion, as well as about to #trend. Thus, we make great judges for all types of contests and pageants. So, how fitting when the Junior Orange Bowl Royal Court came calling for me to help determine their queen and princesses for the 2013-14 year. How could I say no? It would not be fair to the people, or the young ladies. ––––––– See

The Coral Gables Trolley is now a bicycle friendly transportation system. In April, bicycle racks were installed in front of every Trolley offering a new added convenience for riders wanting to continue their commute on two wheels. Each rack installed in the 11-trolley fleet can hold two bicycles, a free service provided by the City of Coral Gables. The Coral Gables Trolleys run along Ponce de Leon Boulevard from the
Douglas Metrorail Station to Flagler Street. This service runs approximately every 10 to 12 minutes Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. until 8 p.m., except the first Friday of the month which runs until 10 p.m. Aside from the convenience it provides, the new bicycle friendly feature on the trolleys helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by lowering the number of motor vehicle trips and also helps to increase the physical activity of bicyclists.

City customers now can print Permit Card online BY ROSIE TOBALINA
The City of Coral Gables (www.citybeautiful.net) has implemented a new online Permit Card Printing function that will benefit contractors and residents looking to have quick access to a paid permit. A Permit Card is the official authorization from the City of Coral to start the proposed construction, repair or improvement work. This new function will allow customers to receive automatically

the Permit Card requested via email after a permit is paid. Previously, the customer had to wait until the next business day to receive the Permit Card through a manual process. This process is available for any request of building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and zoning permits. The city requires that all Permit Cards be posted in job sites. The new function will eliminate the delays in receiving the Permit Card, allowing customers to print the Permit Card with the convenience of 24/7 availability and as fast as an email can travel.

event during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend,” she added. “The 65th Anniversary, or ‘Diamond Jubilee year’ is upon us at the Junior Orange Bowl,” Bueso said. “The ‘Illumination Spectacular’ will celebrate the many memories made in the past, and cheer those that are still to form a part of our rich tapestry in the future. I urge all our past co-celebrants to return. Similarly, I’d encourage all potential new participants to become engaged with the Junior Orange Bowl and join me in admiring the wondrous prism of light that emanates from children’s future.” The Junior Orange Bowl Parade Committee also honored the float award winners from last year’s 64th parade. In attendance was Enrique Lopez and Elizabeth
Martinez from Dade Medical College of the University of Southernmost Florida, which won the Bank of Coral Gables President’s Choice Award. Other float winners included the City of North Miami, Miami Children’s Hospital, Village of Pinecrest, and Shake-ALeg. The 65th Junior Orange Bowl Parade once again will march through the streets of downtown Coral Gables along Miracle Mile and Biltmore Way. The annual parade is the flagship event of the Junior Orange Bowl Festival season, which consists of nearly 20 athletic, academic, and cultural youth events that are held in South Florida. TROWBRIDGE, from page 1 I was known (and forever shall be known) as Judge #2. My role was to work with my five colleagues to interview, rate and review 19 young ladies who all sought the coveted title of Junior Orange Bowl Queen, a position that has been held by some of the most lovely young ladies dating back nearly 65 years — many of whom are still involved and working tirelessly backstage to ensure that everything runs smoothly. Well, just a shade past chaotic. Now, round one — the personal interview — is my strength. I can dissect a platform or bio sheet with the best of them and mold that into a carefully nuanced question in an instant. Why is Demi Lovato your role model? Tell me more about why Harry Potter inspires you? Why do you enjoy the Glee Club/4H/Science Fairs, etc.? How does P!nk’s latest song resonate with you? Well, you get the idea, and so do they! I am a little less into the sportswear/physical fitness aspect of the program. I mean, those of us who espouse the sedentary lifestyle really prefer pajama bottoms and scrubs to fitted khakis and belts. Alas, I powered through. I wanted to get to the good part. The first cut — Top 10! This is when you find out if you are in sync with your fellow judges and on the same page to pick a winner. The ladies on each side of me — neither of whom I had met

exposed her even more to the importance of volunteerism and its positive impact on our community. After earning her BS at the State University of New York at Binghampton, Thompson’s career brought her to South Florida where she earned an MS in Taxation at Florida International University. She also has a Certificate in Financial Planning from FSU. With more than 25 years of experience in the field, Thompson is a tax partner based in Cherry Bekaert’s South Florida practice with a specialization in taxation and financial planning primarily for high-net-worth family groups and the real estate industry. While clients look to Darla for her expertise as a Certified Public Accountant and Certified Financial Planner, those skills have proven a godsend to the many for whom she has provided pro bono services. In 2009, Thompson joined Cherry Bekaert firm through its acquisition of the McKean Paul Chrycy & Fletcher firm in Miami. Her clients look to her for many things such as guidance with their pass-through entities and succession planning and for help with complex tax issues surrounding the development and sale of intellectual property. before — were pageant pros. They knew when to make eye contact, not to clap or smile, and how to nod knowingly as if to encourage, but not show any hint of favoritism, even though they are related to half the girls. They also know how to wear a veritable metric ton of glitter. It was everywhere! Hair, eyelids, cheekbones, neck, arms, inner ears, spleen and even their thighs (at least Judge #3 — she wore a mini-skirt that would make Cher blush). And thus, by the laws of transference, it was all over me. Like pine needles after your Christmas tree has been gone for months — everywhere. Finally, with our 10 young ladies all lined up on stage, it happened. Secret question time. Gulp! The one all 10 had to answer — the great equalizer and final determiner. One by one, the young ladies came out of isolation to answer the question. It was a doozey, too. You had to have done your homework or you would stumble and falter. Most did well — even if they faked it — and that meant it was time to now rank our Top 5. In this group was a queen and two princesses. I wiped the stray glitter from my scorecard, brow and left thigh, and made my choice. I was confident. I was sure. I was covered in gold body glitter. And when the big moment came, my gal won — a golden moment for a lovely young woman who will represent our community for the coming year. This proves, yet again, that all the glitters is indeed gold. Accountants (AICPA) and the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants (FICPA). Among Thompson’s many volunteer efforts are serving over the years in the following positions for local nonprofits: treasurer, St. Thomas Lutheran Church; treasurer, Palmetto High PTSA; finance committee, Women of Tomorrow; Deering Estate volunteer; former board member of Coral Gables@Home; treasurer of Waldorf International School, and as board member of the new UM organization, Industry Affiliates Group, created by the dean of the Graduate School of UM, Brian Blake. In addition, she has worked with the One Community One Goal initiative. She also is working with the Beacon Council relating to internships and on the Tour of the Kitchens Committee for the Coral Gables Community Foundation. Thompson served as treasurer of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce before fearlessly agreeing to fill a mid-term vacancy when she was tapped to be chair-elect of the chamber. When she in not serving the community and working, she enjoys crafts, cooking and, of course, spending time with husband Baird Thompson and two sons — Kenny, 21, who just graduated from New College in Sarasota with a degree in literature, and Ryan, 17, who will be entering his senior year at Palmetto High. This perky, professional, numbers genius is a women of substance who manages to juggle her many obligations with grace.

Clevelander at Marlins Park launches High Heels in Left Field Gloria Burns GLORIA’S GAB High Heels in Left Field was launched on May 22 at the Clevelander at Marlins Park. This Clevelander Cares event was the first in a series of great networking charity events geared for women, but one that also welcomes gents. The price of admission included a drink, great food, awesome gifts and a ticket to the game with proceeds benefiting this time Safespace Foundation. Clevelander’s Christina Ward, who many remember was a founder of High Heels and Hand Shakes, was delighted with the support she received from vendors such as Flatout, those great post party flats in a bag, and Mary Kay. Flats and Mary Kay lip glosses were among the handouts for those in attendance. In addition, May Kay Cadillac director Lizz Wiegandt also providing free makeovers. Among the many enjoying the event were several wives of the Marlins players, some members of the Coral Gables Woman’s Club and the Doral Business Council, and even a few guys. At upcoming High Heels in Left Field events, charitable beneficiaries will include Dress for Success, Women’s Fund of Miami, Badges of Courage, Susan B. Komen. Each event also benefits the Marlins Foundation, which has a history of charitable giving in our community. In other charitable happenings, more than 300 people gathered for a beautiful lunch to benefit orphaned children through the good works of Friends of the Orphans, an organization that supports a network of nine homes of Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos (NPH, Spanish for “Our Little Brothers and Sisters) and their outreach programs in Latin America and the Caribbean which currently
cares for 3,700 children. Since they started in 1954, they have helped raise and educate approximately 16,000 children. This luncheon is the beginning of an effort to bring about awareness of their efforts to the philanthropic community of South Florida an raise money to continue their amazing work. The program included words from the CEO of the organization, Frank Donahue, and a video presentation featuring words from grateful children. On hand for the luncheon were two men who themselves were taken in at age 5 and, after graduating from college, came back to mentor and help manage the programs. Among the many locals filling a table for this affair was Lynn Bauer of Bauer Financial. Bauer, who worked with Rod Hildebrand and Matthew Meehan to build a home for Sunil’s Home Orphanage in India, certainly identified with the incredible people who have committed their time, talent and financial resources to this charitable work. Thus, Bauer was extremely pleased that the NPH leaders were willing to meet and share their vast experience during a meeting later that same week at Season’s 52. Rafael Bermudez Gutierrez, national director from Mexico; Kristina Fueyo, regional director for Child Sponsorship; Tomas Hauff, Paramount Planning Group, a board member, and Alfredo Benitez, NPHI country liaison, Friends of the Orphans SE Region, were among those at that get together to discuss best practices, etc. For more information on NPH, visit <www.friendsoftheorphans.org>. Speaking of Season’s 52, the restaurant held a great mixology dining experience that paired a seasonal four-course tasting menu with some awesome mixed drinks using Double Cross Vodka. After an introduction by Marita Leonard, DCV’s Florida sales manager, the fun began as Cricket Nelson, mixologist and creator of Edible Drink, educated the group on the science of mixology while giving them step-by-step directions on making several creative drinks. These included Afternoon Tea Punch, a Lemongrass Cooler, Thai Cucumber paired with Season 52’s tastings and concluding with those fabulous mini decadent desserts. Guests not only enjoyed the food and drink but had a blast making their own drinks and learning a new trade with a gift bag of bar –––––––––––––––––––– Mary Kay director Lizz Wiegandt gives makeover during High Heels in Left Field launch party at the Clevelander at Marlins Park.

$13M ‘showplace’ garage opens near The Palace at Coral Gables BY RICHARD YAGER
A state-of-the-art public parking garage has opened at 2 Andalusia Ave., displaying striking exterior architecture complementing an equally new neighbor, The Palace at Coral Gables, a luxury senior community readying for its first residents. The addition of 365 new spaces for paid public parking within the structure’s striking Mediterranean styling is the result of a city partnership with The Palace Group, a leading senior community development and management company in South Florida. “In addition to bringing a beautiful facility that enhances the Coral Gables’ downtown, the project provides significant financial benefits to the city and its taxpayers,” Coral Gables Mayor Jim Cason said. The Palace housing is planned for first occupancies this summer with more than 240 upscale units, developed on cityowned land through a long-term ground lease providing the city with a minimum guaranteed rent of $120,000 for each of the first three years, increasing thereafter by $10,000 per year to a maximum of $250,000 per year. Percentage rent also will start in the fourth lease year. The agreement between the developer and Coral Gables allowed the city to redevelop an aging garage on the approximate 27,000-square-foot site on Andalusia, as well as “bring downtown residential opportunities for luxury senior housing, a much needed one,” according to Coral Gables spokesperson Belky Perez. The new $13 million garage replaces an older structure demolished more than two years ago and brings back the approximate 365 spaces, increasing the former amount of public parking by 35 spaces, she explained. In addition, there are 190 spaces dedicated to residents of The Palace on its upper two levels, making a total of 555 parking

spaces on seven floors. “Integral to the new Palace at Coral Gables was our intent in providing an attractive and convenient parking facility which serves the needs of the city as well as our residents, employees and guests,” said Jacob Shaham, CEO for The Palace Group, owners and operators of The Palace at Coral Gables. A meticulously crafted copper dome was completed recently as a signature piece to top the nine-story building, adding a new landmark to the City Beautiful skyline. “The garage facility mirrors our new community and is simply beautiful. We are very proud in knowing this will serve the community for many years,” he added. The garage is conveniently located for daily shoppers and visitors with operation at standard city rates, currently $1 per hour for the first four hours, and $2
for subsequent hours with a maximum of $12 per day. Seniors now have an option of living in the downtown city area, or moving into the
city to be near family as they shift towards a congregate or assisted living style, Perez said, noting “Previously many residents were forced to move to other communities, as this housing option was not available in Coral Gables.” Addition of new downtown residents to support the local business economy through shopping and dining was a key factor in the recognition of the creative redevelopment and reuse plan of the site in the 2011 Awards Program of the International Economic Development Council. Estimated at $80 million cost, The Palace at Coral Gables has architectural details recalling the Spanish Baroque style, a period of art history that served as inspiration for city founder George Merrick’s vision of a community highlighting Mediterranean architecture. The new garage opens just as Coral Gables commissioners and city manager Pat Salerno agreed on May 28 to hear from its parking consultant, Timothy Haahs and Associates, that an additional 101 public spaces near Andalusia will be needed by 2018, based on a January 2013 study. For more details on the new garage installation, contact the City of Coral Gables Parking Division at 305-460-5541.

‘Daddy, may I borrow $25?’ BY GRANT MILLER
Publisher I found the following story on the Internet. The author is unknown, but I thought the tale and its lesson well worth sharing. A man came home late from work one evening tired and irritated, only to find his 5-year-old son waiting for him at the door. “Daddy, may I ask you a question?” the boy asked. “Yeah, sure, what is it?” the man replied a bit grumpily. “Daddy, how much do you make an hour?” “That’s none of your business,” the man said angrily. “Why do you ask such a thing?” “I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make an hour?” “If you must know, I make $50 an hour.” “Oh,” the little boy replied with his head down. “Daddy, may I please borrow $25?” The father was furious. “If the only reason you asked that is so you can borrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are being so selfish. I don’t work hard every day to pay for such childish frivolities.” The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. The man sat down and began to get even angrier about the little boy’s questions. How dare he ask such questions just to get some money? After an hour or so, the man calmed down and started to think about what had happened. Maybe there was something the boy really needed to buy with that $25, and he really did not ask for money very often.
The man went to the door of the boy’s room and opened the door. “Are you asleep, son?” he asked. “No, daddy, I’m awake,” the boy replied. “I’ve been thinking; maybe I was too hard on you earlier. It’s been a long day and I took out my aggravation out on you. Here’s the $25 you asked for.” The little boy sat straight up, smiling broadly. “Oh, thank you, daddy!” he cried. Then, reaching under his pillow, he pulled out a wad of crumpled up bills. Seeing that the boy already had money, the man felt his anger rising again as he watched his son slowly count his money. As he carefully placed the last bill in place, he looked up at his father with a broad smile. “Why do you want more money if you already have some?” the father grumbled. “Because I didn’t have enough, but now I do,” said the little boy. “Daddy, now I have $50, so I would like to buy an hour of your time. Please come home early tomorrow, I would like to have dinner with you.” The man was crushed. He put his arms around his son and begged him for forgiveness. This story is a reminder to all of us who work so hard in this modern, fast-paced age that we should not let life slip through our fingers without spending time with those who really matter to us, those close to our hearts. Remember to share $50 worth of your time with someone you love. If we die tomorrow, the company we work for will easily replace us in a matter of hours. But the family and friends we leave behind will feel the loss for the rest of their lives. Our Lady of Lourdes Academy begins expansion of campus BY CAROLINA WILSON
After 17 years of lawyers and zoning hearings, Our Lady of Lourdes Academy (OLLA), 5525 SW 84 St., finally has begun the planned expansion of its campus. The renovations include the addition of a new classroom building, a chapel and a gymnasium. Sister Kathryn Donzé, principal, said that construction is going well and is on schedule. “For the past 17 years, Our Lady of Lourdes Academy has endeavored to enhance its campus but met with resistance from neighbors,” Donzé said. “After years of legal process and a series of zoning hearings, the county gave permission for construction with enrollment cap of 840 students.” Donzé said that although the biggest challenge has been accommodating the building process in a confined area, the construction team is very considerate. “We have been blessed with the help of good people whose goal is to interrupt the learning process as little as possible,” Donzé said. During the summer of 2012, a loop road was created to allow for more efficient traffic flow. Following in the 2012-13 school year, a new classroom building was built allowing additional classrooms and the elimination of
trailers, which used to hold some classes. The construction plans continue during this summer, Donzé said. “During the summer of 2013, the southwest front part of the school will be renovated with completion scheduled for November. This will allow for consolidation of administrative offices, a new chapel, and a second floor computer center housing four classrooms, an IT office, and an IT room,” she said. “In July of 2013, the construction of the gym will commence.” While the physical construction of OLLA ensues, Donzé said she believes the renovations also will inspire academic growth in the students. “Additional classrooms will benefit the scheduling of classes. Classes will no longer be using the library and cafeteria or auditorium,” Donzé said. “Different disciplines will be in central locations.” In addition to new classrooms, the latest plans include the augmentation of a gymnasium. “The gym will benefit physical education classes, enable the scheduling of practices and games for our athletic teams, and provide a gathering space for our whole school community for liturgy and certain assemblies,” Donzé said.
Lourdes’ principal Sister Kathryn Donzé breaks ground with the members of the 2013 Student Council Executive Board — Jacqueline Castellanos, treasurer; Vanessa Quintero, secretary; Natalia Bru, president, and Sophia Fleites-Escagedo, vice-president. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
Although OLLA will undergo physical changes throughout the coming months, Donzé said the mission of the school will remain as strong as it has been for the past 50 years. “Our mission is to educate young women to face the future strengthened in their faith,
prepared and confident in their abilities to achieve their goals and committed to their Catholic and American heritages,” Donzé said. “We have graduated many young women who have positively impacted their workplace and environment.”

Butterflies galore at Fairchild Garden’s inaugural Butterfly Migration Parade BY BROOKE LEMAIRE
There were glittery wings, whimsical outfits, energetic dances. It may have been early on Saturday morning, but Old Cutler Road was lit up with festive sights and sounds for Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden’s inaugural Butterfly Migration Parade. On May 18, participants from all over Miami spread their wings and marched from Matheson Hammock Park to Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in colorful butterfly displays. Fairchild staff rode in style on a

shuttle decorated as a caterpillar with big eyes and pointy antennae. A fun float adorned with larger-than-life flowers and butterflies carried Ms. Miami 2013-14, Isabelle Scott, and her little sisters; University of Miami’s Sebastian the Ibis, and Burnie, the Miami Heat mascot. Local dignitaries from Coral Gables waved to spectators from cars and Segways. Miami Norland Senior High marching band drummers and Precious Pearls dance group, Hialeah Gardens Middle School drumline and dancers, and the Henry H. Filer Middle School Lady Panthers cheerleaders and Panther Starlets dancers gave performances. Outfitted in vibrant apparel, the Bahamas Junkanoo Revue brought the celebration to life with high-energy drums and dancing. Even some Miami residents joined the parade, fluttering down the road dressed in bright colors and sparkly wings. Once the parade made its way through the gates of Fairchild, the garden filled with the sounds of performances by drumlines, cheer squads and dance troops. The dance groups from local schools showed off some great routines, and the Bahamas Junkanoo Revue got the crowd dancing along to the beat of the drums. While DJ Crunchtime played some popular tunes, guests got their faces painted

with lovely winged designs to complete their butterfly looks. Like butterflies, people get hungry, too, and luckily there was plenty of food to go around. There were hot dogs and hamburgers on the Glasshouse Café patio, the Ms. Cheezious food truck served delicious grilled cheese sandwiches and Ecoripe Tropicals handed out samples of exotic rambutan fruit. To truly appreciate our fluttering friends, Fairchild staff was on hand in front of the new butterfly conservatory to answer questions and teach visitors about the butterfly life cycle. Once they were inside the Wings of the Tropics exhibit, guests could see the thou-
sands of stunning butterflies and their new friends on view hatching from chrysalis in the Butterfly Metamorphosis Lab. Overall, it was a great day to be a butterfly fan. Fairchild will continue educating the community about these winged wonders and will most certainly keep celebrating our butterfly buddies. Fairchild is a not-for-profit organization with 45,000 members and is located at 10901 Old Cutler Rd. in Coral Gables. Admission is $25 for adults, $18 for seniors, $12 for children 6-17 and free to children 5 and under and Fairchild members. For more information, visit <www.fairchildgarden.org>.

Carl Hiaasen exposes more of Florida’s society in new novel BY ERINN HARTMAN
Carl Hiaasen — award-winning journalist, columnist for the Miami Herald, and bestselling novelist — has won international acclaim for his relentless skewering of his beloved Florida. In his columns and novels, he has taken on telemarketers, tourists, land developers, and politicians, among others — all part of his ongoing quest to expose the underbelly of Florida society and politics. Now, in Bad Monkey (Knopf, 6/11), he sets his sights on Medicare fraudsters and restaurant inspectors (and a very bad monkey…). Andrew Yancy has a human arm in his freezer. The theory is that a boating-accident separated it from its owner, but Yancy remains convinced the explanation is full of holes. And since he has been let go from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department for publicly punishing his girlfriend’s husband with a vacuum cleaner attachment, he thinks if he can prove it was murder, he can move from his grisly health inspector gig back onto the force. But Yancy must negotiate an obstacle course of events with unpredictable characters, including the twitchy widow of the frozen arm; two avariciously optimistic real-estate speculators; a Bahamian voodoo witch known as the Dragon Queen, whose suitors are blinded unto death by her peculiar charms; a gorgeous, kinky coroner from Miami-Dade County, and the eponymous bad monkey, who earns his place among Carl Hiaasen’s greatest characters. Carl Hiaasen was born and raised in
Florida. He is the author of 11 previous novels, including the best-selling Nature Girl, Skinny Dip, Sick Puppy, and Lucky You, and three best-selling children’s books — Hoot, Flush, and Scat. His most recent work of nonfiction is The Downhill Lie: A Hacker’s Return to a Ruinous Sport. He also writes a weekly column for the Miami Herald. Hiaasen will be speaking on Tuesday, June 18, 7:30 p.m., at Temple Judea, 5500 Granada Blvd. in Coral Gables. The event is in conjunction with Books and Books Coral Gables. Tickets are free but are required and may be obtained at the Coral Gables store.

ARE YOU READY FOR HURRICANE SEASON? Batteries Plus® Offers Tips for Staying Powered Up and Connected in the Eye of the Storm
With hurricane season approaching (June through November), residents of South Florida should be prepared for widespread power outages and potential property damage. Batteries Plus, the nation’s largest and fastestgrowing battery and light bulb franchise, encourages consumers to take action now by stocking up on essential preparation and safety items. . “We recommend that consumers stock up on a variety of products that will maximize the battery life of items like flashlights and charging stations and keep communication lines open as long as possible so they can stay informed on breaking storm announcements,” said Chuck Kesl, owner of Batteries Plus in Miami Lakes, Fla. In preparation of the impending hurricane season, Batteries Plus Bulbs recommends stocking up on the following items. • Power Inverters –Power inverters
allow you to use a car’s battery to run a variety of electronic devices, including phones, laptops, cameras and other appliances. • Flashlights – As a general rule of thumb, have one flashlight per person in your household. • Backup Chargers for Mobile Devices – External, portable battery packs, including one solar-charged and one extended-capacity battery, can help keep a smartphone juiced up longer than its normal battery life. • Alkaline Batteries – Stock up on two to three sets of backup batteries, including AA, AAA, C, D, 9 volt, and 6 volt, for every device that requires a charge. • Generator Starting Battery – The battery for your home or business generator has been in storage and needs to be checked. Bring in your generator and other batteries to Batteries Plus for free testing.
• Emergency Lighting and Exit Signs – Make sure these are in working order and replace batteries regularly. • Solar charger for car, boat, mobility and more – This will help you recharge when the power is out. • Spare batteries – Consider spare batteries for laptops, mobility and certainly medical devices. • Radios – A battery-powered, twoway or hand-crank radio, plus a NOAA weather radio with tone alert to stay informed about weather and evacuation announcements. Other essentials – Stock up on water, non-perishable, easy-to-prepare foods such as canned goods and food that do not require refrigeration, cooking, water or special preparation. Animal Services, MDCPS join for Pollo Tropical promises wild a lesson on taking care of pets summer with zoo promotion BY GILDA NUÑEZ
Miami-Dade County Animal Services Department (ASD) in collaboration with Miami Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) implemented a Taking Care of Pets Lesson, which was made a part of the third, fourth and fifth grade curriculum. This lesson plan was launched into the classrooms recently at all public elementary schools reaching an estimated 89,300 students. This is a milestone in responsible pet ownership and marks the first time that ASD and MDCPS joined forces in an education initiative to address the pet overpopulation problem. This lesson is set to teach students about pets’ basic needs and care. The lesson will promote responsible pet ownership and at the same time stimulate students in devel-
oping character behaviors (i.e. kindness, honesty, fairness, integrity, responsibility) when taking care of pets. “We are very pleased to join forces with Miami Dade County Public Schools, and to become part of the school’s curriculum in educating our young children the importance of pet care and responsibility”, said Alex Muñoz, director of ASD. “Our goal is to teach these children respect for all animals and, hopefully, they will one day become loving and responsible pet owners themselves!,” Muñoz added. Each year, ASD receives over 30,000 pets. For more information, about services, pets available for adoptions, volunteer opportunities and found pets, visit <www.miamidade.gov/animals> or call 3-1-1.
