High Heels in Left Field event scores another hit with ladies

Among the crowd seen here at High Heels in Left Field event are several members of the GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club. High Heels in Left Field, a monthly event at the Clevelander at Marlins Park benefiting the Marlins Foundation and other charities, is a guaranteed great time for ladies. Tickets include a drink, great food, entertainment, and game admission. With the added bonus of a ball game, the affair makes it a winner for the guys as well. In fact, at the last affair on June 12, several husbands tagged along and loved it. On that particular evening, the GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club was treated to a ride to Marlins Park in a stretch limo courtesy of Giovanni Colosi, Ambassador Transportation Group. Riding in style was appreciated especially as it gave club members a chance to celebrate the birthdays of past president Linda Hartwell and New Member of the Year Debi Moore. Of course, it also made them feel like celebrities.

Guests at this affair, coordinated by the Clevelander’s Christina Ward, enjoyed makeovers by Lizz Wiegande of Mary Kay, and blow dry stylings by Blo Blow Dry Bar making everyone look fabulous. At Blo, 3301 NE First Ave. in Midtown, you can choose from the menu of seven styles and the cost is $35 for all hair types and lengths. What a deal! Even the lovely Fox Sports on air personality took advantage of Blo’s fabulous work. Kudos to Blo franchise partner, Sandirose Magder (The Mane Muchacha) and her staff of talented stylists, for adding to an overall great night out. As the evening came to a close, guests left with parting gifts of Mary Kay lip glosses and a pair of those great “end of the night and take those heels off” flats from FlatOut. Save July 31 for the next High Heels in Left Field event. To get on the invitation list, email <Rsvp@clevelander.com>.

get to watch my students grow and learn through their experiences in debate, speaking, and participating. My job is to pave their path, present them with appropriate challenges, and then stay out of the way. I treasure the relationships we build, and I consistently learn more from my students than I can possibly teach them.” Steinberg joined the university in 1990 and has been instrumental at the School of Communication in teaching students essential skills in argumentation and debate, public speaking, communication theory, persuasion, business, and political communication. These skills have helped them become successful in a wide range of professions. Beloved by students and alumni, he has influenced the lives of thousands of young people. Steinberg has been the University of Miami Debate director for 23 years, leading the team to numerous awards, including the Championship of Delta Sigma Rho-Tau Kappa Alpha, National Debate Honorary, in 1996 and 2013. His debaters have been named to the All-American debate team 22 of the past 23 years. Steinberg also serves his profession through his work in national associations, and in 2006-07, he was president of the Cross Examination Debate Association, the professional organization which sponsors and represents intercollegiate policy debate teams in the United States. “When the Staubs initiated this award,

they did so with the belief that we in higher education don’t recognize often enough those who make a difference in the lives of young people through teaching,” said Gregory J. Shepherd, dean of the School of Communication. “It would be easy to conclude they had Dave Steinberg in mind while thinking that thought. “Dave has been making a difference in the lives of UM students for more than two decades. He is a wonderful classroom instructor, but also a gifted coach. I regularly encounter alumni who attribute their post-graduate success to Dave and what he taught them about research, careful preparation, argument, making a case for or against something, and working as part of a team. I couldn’t be happier, seeing him honored in this most deserved way,” Shepherd added. An expert in political debates, rhetoric, speeches, and political campaigns, Steinberg is a highly sought after source and was frequently requested for analysis of the 2012 Presidential and Vice Presidential debates. He has been quoted in a number of international and national publications, including the Washington Post, WIRED, and Reuters.com. He is coauthor of the leading debate textbook, Argumentation and Debate: Critical Thinking for Reasoned Decision Making, now in its 13th edition. Steinberg will receive $2,500 as part of the award, and his name will be displayed on a permanent plaque in the school’s reception lobby. Steinberg was honored during the school’s annual awards ceremony at the Robert and Judi Prokop Newman Alumni Center on May 10.

Natalie Pacheco, an incoming senior at Coral Gables High, has more than 400 community service hours recorded, most because of her participation on the Gablettes and Co. Dance Team. “We perform at football games, we do performances for AIDS benefits, for middle schools and we do shows,” she said. “We also had a Gablettes review.” The dance team competes at regional and national events. In March, they took first place at the National Dance Alliance for the Medium Varsity Team Performance. “We also won other things too,” she said. “We won first place in junior varsity kick. We are ranked top five in the world in medium varsity team performance.” Pacheco was not a dancer before joining Gablettes. She saw them perform and fell in love with the idea of being just like the dancers. She tried out and is very happy she was picked for the team. While being on the dance team takes up much of her time, Pacheco’s also a member of Interact and the Support Our Sports Club. “It encourages kids to go to football games and soccer games,” she said. “I feel like the students at our school, our football teams and stuff, they need our support and they don’t get it.” In fact, at some football games the stands are fairly empty, she said. Pacheco also takes a music class. She is in the Women’s Ensemble, which recently went to a national competition in Virginia and was ranked superior. Although she wasn’t able to go on that trip because of a conflict with a Gablettes performance, she did perform with the group at the state competition, which qualified them for the nationals. In college, Pacheco plans to major in journalism. “I want to be a writer,” she said. “I want to be an author for children’s books and I want to be a fashion magazine editor.” She is considering applying to FSU, Alabama, and the University of Colorado at Boulder.

When incoming Coral Gables High senior Shayla Durant is not at school, she’s probably on a stage as an actress, singer and dancer. “I want to perform on Broadway when I get older,” she said. “I love musical theater. Acting lets you be another person on stage and gives you the freedom to be whatever character you want to be. There’s no shyness on stage.” She is working on her dream by taking musical theater and dance classes at the Mad Dancing Company at the Little Haiti Cultural Arts Center. “I started singing when I was 12,” she said. “I discovered it in the summer. I didn’t know I could do dancing, singing and acting. Until I went to the African Cultural Arts Center Summer Camp.” She was discovered at the camp by a choreographer and joined a dance company she switched around and has now settled with Mad Dancing Company. “We recently performed at a Heat game,” she said. “And we auditioned for America’s Got Talent. In the musical theater performance area, we do two per year.” At Gables, Durant is in the Cavalier Singers and Thespians. She is an original member of the Gables step team, Sisters With Attitude. Durant also is in Future Business Leaders of America. She competes in the Public Speaking category. In the summer, Durant volunteers at a basketball camp at Christopher Columbus High School, where her brothers and cousins attended. “I love basketball and I love kids,” she said. “I allocated the lunches and snacks. And I helped set up whatever equipment they need in the morning and then in the afternoon. They give me a group to watch over and take to different stations.” Now that college is looming, Durant is narrowing her application list. She’s considering Julliard, NYU, UCLA, New World School of the Arts and Florida State University. Her major will be musical theater.

The last few years have been hard for incoming Coral Gables High senior Taralee Britton. Her mother lost her job a couple of years ago and they lost their home. “It came out of nowhere. She went to work and she got laid off,” Britton said. “We were in another house that we had bought; they foreclosed it and then we were kicked out of the other house and it got harder and harder.” Britton said they had a difficult time finding a place to live. “We had nowhere to go for a while. I lived in a duplex,” she said. They even stayed in a home owned by one of her mom’s friends. Her living situation settled down when her uncle bought them a house. When her mother gets settled financially, they will pay him back. Despite almost being homeless, Britton managed to keep focused on her academics. She ended her junior year with all A’s and B’s. She said her grades her sophomore year were not as stellar as she had hoped, so she is proud she was able to get them back up. Britton is in culinary section of the Design Education and Hospitality Academy. Outside the academy she takes honors and gifted classes. Next year she will be working and going to school. There is a program that allows students to go to school in the morning and leave early in order to go to work. After graduation, she is thinking of going to culinary school so she can earn a living while attending college to become a psychologist. “Since the things I’ve gone through, I want to help others,” she said. “I want to help them mentally and give them advice.” She plans to take the ACT and SAT exams this month and has been studying hard in order to get good scores so she can apply to colleges such as Florida International University, University of Central Florida and Johnson and Wales for culinary arts.

Coral Gables Rotary’s club year draws to a close Gloria Burns GLORIA’S GAB Coral Gables Rotary’s club year draws to a close with numerous events including a fifth Friday Social at UM’s Sports Hall of Fame on May 31 where guests enjoyed checking out all the sports memorabilia and partaking of a delicious spread prepared by Catering by Lovables. The very next week, Gables Rotary’s final Wine and Dine for Charity event took place on June 4 at the Westin Colonnade. Chefs Thomas Russo and Brian Harding provided a beautiful four-course dinner with wine pairings preceded by a champagne reception courtesy of Yolanda Woodbridge. The dinner closed with beautiful light dessert and lemoncello, made with a liquor and liquid nitrogen. This drink prepared by the chefs certainly made for an entertaining finale to this evening of fun and fellowship. With proceeds benefiting both the Coral Gables Rotary Foundation and Shake-A-Leg Miami, SAL’s H a r ry Horgan was on hand to thank the crowd and say a few words about the incredible programs the organization provides for our community. Among the many faces in the crowd were Coral Gables Rotary president Walter and Annette Alvarez, event chair Rodney and Blanca Langer, Chuck Whitcomb, Rick and Margarita Tonkinson, Elizabeth Silverman, Sally Baumgartner, Larry Goodman, Carol and Ron Rosenau, and Kathy Rosa. Yet another great affair at the Westin, Taste of the Gables, was held the following evening, June 5. Westin’s handcrafted ice cream made with liquid nitrogen, there was something for every palate. In other news, the Junior League of Miami Foundation’s 1926 Society with its more than 100 members held an elegant Morning Tea at the home of Sue Cesarano, former foundation board member. Orchestrated by Karelia Martinez Carbonell, immediate past president of the foundation, guests enjoyed a traditional tea service featuring Cesarano’s heirloom silver tea set with matching silverware and delicious heart scones and clotted cream served on fine bone china. This annual affair celebrates the foundation’s philanthropists and recognizes donors to the 1926 Society. This year, three individuals were honored as 2013 Life Members for their strong commitment to the Foundation and its mission. Peter Bermont, whose late wife Ronni was the inspiration for the creation of the foundation; Sandra Fairman, who also supports other league projects, and Andrea Heuson-Sharp, who also serves on the foundation board of directors. 2012 Life Member Jennifer Press presented Sandra and Andrea with beautiful silver medallions designed with the foundation logo and presented Peter with stunning silver cufflinks also designed with the logo. Finally, the GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club was treated to a limo ride to Marlins Park on June 12 to participate in High Heels in Left Field event to benefit Dress for Success and the Marlins Foundation. The night also gave club members a chance to celebrate the birthdays of past president Linda Hartwell and New Member of the Year Debi Moore. Until next time, keep making each day count. First residents move into The Palace at Coral Gables BY PATRICIA MALDONADO

Harriett Dembrow always will have the distinction of being the very first resident to grace The Palace at Coral Gables. “I had been living alone in my home. The neighborhood where we had lived for 51 years had become more seasonal with fewer people around,” said Dembrow who moved from Coconut Grove. “I’ve never lived in the heart of a city or in a high-rise building. Looking out from the balcony is such a thrill. You see the city come to life in the morning and people going to work.” Dembrow moved into the elegant rental senior community at 1 Andalusia Ave. in early June. The Palace is one of the first of its kind in Florida. While many senior communities are on isolated campuses, The Palace takes advantage of a downtown address. “I consider myself very lucky,” Dembrow said. “Now I can walk the neighborhood and visit the shops just down the street.” The Palace was developed after city officials entered into a public-private partnership with The Palace Group, the awardwinning senior housing developer, owner and operator of senior communities in South Florida and Israel. The project includes a nine-story parking garage now open to the public. Dembrow choose The Palace to be closer to her family. She has three children and six grandchildren. However, her new two-

bedroom apartment affords Dembrow the added benefit of being closer to all the places she was used to frequenting as a long-time Miami resident. The Palace residents are mere steps away from restaurants, bookstores and shopping. The nine-story tower includes 243 plush studio, one- and two-bedroom residences including independent living and a separate floor for assisted living with special services and care. Its elaborate interior design draws from the legendary Four Seasons George V Hotel in Paris, complete with marble floors, winding staircases and crystal chandeliers. Dembrow, 83, recently celebrated her first night at The Palace with her family and her first neighbor, Victor Esterlitz, 88, who moved from The Palace Kendall. “The change is nice,” said Esterlitz, a retired sales manager who now lives three miles from his children. “I’m not that familiar with the neighborhood. I’m looking forward to walking around and visiting some of the shops and restaurants that I can see from my window.” Besides his new address, however, Esterliz enjoys his senior lifestyle at The Palace. “You have the ability to be alone and in your own apartment doing whatever you wish or mix and mingling when you want,” he said. “And now I even have a new neighborhood to explore.”

Epiphany Catholic School works hard to keep its teaching style balanced BY CAROLINA WILSON

Epiphany Catholic School (ECS), 5557 SW 84 St., continues to blossom says Sister Margaret Fagan, who has served nine years as principal while teaching preschool through eighth grade students. Although the increasing wave of society’s technology can pose challenges to the education system, Fagan said ECS works hard to keep its teaching style balanced. Fagan said the school is excited to have implemented its new interactive curriculum. “For our sixth through eighth grades, the books are interactive. Our students have the opportunity not only to learn and practice during school time, but can also access their books online when they are home,” Fagan said. “The program includes tutorials for the students, so they can return home and listen to lessons taught in class 100 times over if they wish to.” Fagan believes that the interactive program also is beneficial in that it allows the students to feel more independent and responsible. “I have also seen the students grow. They feel more mature, not only because they are learning in school, but also because they have the responsibility at home, repeating lessons on their own time,” Fagan said. In the past, the preschool program at ECS included a part-day curriculum, one for 3year-olds and one for 4-year-olds. Recently, the 3-year-old program was eliminated and the 4-year-old program, “preschool-4,” incorporated a full-day schedule. Fagan believes this allows the 4-year-olds to be “full members of the school,” and allows the students to engage more in the classroom technology that the school has to offer. “The ‘preschool-4’ program allows every classroom to have an interactive, touchscreen ‘smart board.’ The students are able to see the world around them, brainstorming with the class, writing their own stories, and developing skills that a few years ago we weren’t able to touch when it was only a part-time program,” Fagan said. Although the growth of technology provides schools with innovative teaching tools, Fagan understands that its use comes with difficulties. “With technology, it is a challenge to try and impress upon the students that when they put something out on the social media, the world sees it and it’s permanent,” Fagan said. “With the social media, I have noticed that there is a lack of awareness of Internet permanency; it can be a danger.” ECS hopes to combat the cons of tech-

Sister Margaret Fagan –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

nology use by instilling important spiritual characteristics in students. In addition to the already implemented peacemaker and anti-bullying programs, the school introduced a leadership elective for its seventh and eighth grade students this year. “Through the elective, students work with our counselor in role-playing. By presenting different scenarios to the younger grades, they are able to act out how people should treat one another,” Fagan said. “It has been a learning tool not only for the students actually enrolled in the leadership elective, but also for the younger students that the skits were presented to.” For the future, Fagan said the school will implement a critical-thinking teaching method, the “Common Course Standards” program. “The emphasis next year will be more intense on critical thinking — not just memorization, but application. We’ve started with this critical thinking implementation in student electives such as robotics, inspiring students to bring together creativity, math skills, and critical thinking,” Fagan said. Despite the inevitable challenges that all educators face, Fagan asserts that the desire to grow and progress is what has made ECS a great place to learn. “We’re not perfect, but we always try to make sure that today is better than yesterday and that tomorrow is better than today,” Fagan said. “Our school has a very supportive community.”

Summer is time for fun but also time for safety BY CINDY MAGNOLE

<cmagnole@jhsmiami.org>

It’s that time of year again — school’s out, no more homework and children have lots of free time to have fun. But during summer, with the constant outdoor play — including water activities and, of course, the hot weather — parents should be extra cautious about the hazards to their children’s safety. Here are some important safety tips that can help keep your children out of danger, and out of the emergency room. WATER SAFETY • Never leave a child alone in the water or near the water — not even for a minute to answer the telephone or check the stove. • Children should swim only with adult supervision, even if they are good swimmers. • Floatation devices and inflatable

toys are just that — TOYS. They do not replace adult supervision in the swimming pool, a kiddie pool or a bathtub. It only takes seconds for a child to drown. • If you have a backyard pool or live on the water, you need to have layers of protection to protect your children. These include: window or door locks/alarms, self-latching pool fencing, a Shepherd’s Hook or rescue ring should be available, and have a telephone nearby. Post emergency numbers and your address by a telephone. • No diving into the water — always go in feet first to protect the head and neck. • Select swimming sites that have lifeguards available. Never swim in unguarded lakes or canals because there may be many dangers lurking just beneath the water’s surface. Unseen rip currents in the ocean take too many lives. • Learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Due to the time it may take for paramedics to arrive, CPR skills can make the difference between life and death. • If you see someone in trouble in the

water, remember “Throw! Don’t Go.” Do not jump in any body of water to rescue someone because they may pull you under. Throw them a rope or rescue ring. BIKE SAFETY • Always wear a helmet when bike riding. It can prevent head injuries and even death from a bicycle accident. Helmets and other safety gear also should be worn when skateboarding, skating, riding scooters and ATVs. • Stay in control, be predictable, allow only one person at a time on a bike. No towing! • Watch out for hazards such as loose gravel, potholes, broken glass and stray dogs. • Make sure your children wear bright colors when biking. Teach them that just because they see the driver, that does not mean the driver sees them. • Observe all signs, traffic lights, and street and sidewalk markings; ride single file, and use a steady front white light, a steady red rear light as well as reflectors when riding after dark.

SUN PROTECTION • The sun is strongest between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., so try to keep your children out of direct sunlight during this time of day. • Apply sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher to all children over 6 months old and reapply it every two hours, or more if swimming. Use sunscreen even when you’re in the shade. • Children should drink plenty of fluids; they are susceptible to heat exhaustion and dehydration. BUG BITE SAFETY • Keep your children safe from bug bites by applying safe and effective insect repellents. Apply those with DEET, citronella and soybean oil to the outside of clothing and exposed skin. • Never apply the repellent directly to a child’s hands and face. Rub it into their necks and ears, staying away from their mouth and ears. • Dusk and dawn are the worst times for bugs, so stay indoors during these times or wear long-sleeved shirts and pants.

Dr. Feldman visits students at School for Advanced Studies

Miami-Dade School Board member Dr. Lawrence Feldman answers questions from students at School for Advanced Studies. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

BY DENNIS P. LINDSAY

Dr. Omar Monteagudo, School for Advanced Studies principal, and Dr. Jeanne Jacobs, president of Miami Dade College Homestead Campus, welcomed Miami-Dade School Board member Dr. Lawrence Feldman to their campus on Monday, May 20. School for Advanced Studies (SAS) is celebrating a 25-year partnership this year between Miami Dade College and the Miami-Dade County Public Schools, and SAS recently was named by Newsweek as the “Sixth Best High School in America” in the magazine’s 2013 rankings. Dr. Feldman visited SAS classes and answered questions from the students. He also had his own questions for the SAS students. Dr. Feldman wanted to know what motivates a high school student to take on

the challenge of SAS. SAS students are able to finish their last two years of high school while they simultaneously complete the first two years of college (all for free). The school is known for academic excellence and a rigorous curriculum that requires a lot of hard work and dedication. The school attracts academically talented students who are not intimidated by such a challenge. Ninety percent of the SAS Class of 2013 received an Associate in Arts degree from Miami Dade College a month before their high school graduation and most of the graduating class was accepted at top tier universities all around the United States. Visit the SAS website at <www.sas.dadeschools.net> to learn more about application meetings that will be held in the fall for the SAS Class of 2016 (current 10th graders).

Gulliver’s Eco-Cooker team wins Spirit of Innovation Challenge BY DONNA VAN DER DIJS

Gulliver Preparatory School’s engineering team has been selected as one of four national 2013 Conrad Foundation Spirit of Innovation Challenge winners. Each winning team received an innovation grant of $10,000 to continue product development and a one-year affiliate membership to Sigma Xi, the scientific research society. Gulliver’s engineering team won in the challenge’s Energy and Environment category with its Eco-Cooker. The project was inspired by Garandia, a poor village outside

The Eco-Cooker –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

of Yola, Nigeria, where excessive woodburning cooking has led to deforestation. Garandians have no access to alternative sources for fuel such as gas and electricity. The Eco-Cooker allows for safe and effective cooking without the need for firewood. It uses cattle dung, which is rich in methane, to produce biogas as a clean fuel source for heating and cooking. Because most Garandians make a living as cattle herders, there’s plenty of animal waste around the village. The portable cook stove is easy to use and maintain, will help manage the animal waste and contains an expandable biogas production system. “It’s an incredible honor for our students to be recognized by the Conrad Foundation for the second year in a row,” said John Krutulis, Gulliver’s director and head of schools. “We are proud of our students and their coach, Claude Charron.” The Conrad Foundation’s Spirit of Innovation Challenge celebrates the life and entrepreneurial spirit of astronaut Pete Conrad, the third man to walk on the Moon. Presented by Lockheed Martin and Battelle, the annual program is a multiphase business and technical plan competition, which is free and open to students ages 13-18 from around the world.

Over seven months, students use science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills along with creativity, collaboration and entrepreneurship to develop innovative products and services in one of four categories: Aerospace and Aviation, Cybertechnology and Security, Energy and Environment or Health and Nutrition. This year, 20 finalist teams were selected from a pool of more than 230 entries from 44 countries and throughout the United States. The finalists attended the 2013 Innovation Summit at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, located in Houston, TX, April 10-13. Two Gulliver teams were among the finalists: the winning Eco-Cooker team and a biomedical team, MedEasy, which advanced in the Health and Nutrition category with the Pill-Minder, an automatic pill dispenser with an alarm system

designed to remind people to take their medicine on time and at the right dosage. Claude Charron, coach of the 2013 EcoCooker team and 2012 Team Gulliver International, was named Nancy Conrad Teacher of the Year at the Innovation Summit. He received the honor for excellence in education and for being an outstanding advocate for the program. Charron is Gulliver Prep’s Engineering and Biomedical Sciences Department chair. In addition to a cash award, Gulliver will display, for one year, a custom-designed bronze trophy by sculptor Erik Lindbergh, grandson of famous aviator Colonel Charles A. Lindbergh. Glutathione Needed to Eliminate Toxins Glutathione is an antioxidant produced naturally in the human body, that is composed of 3 amino acids - cysteine, glycine and glutamine. Glutathione helps to detoxify free radicals that can cause serious illness, but poor diet, pollution, toxins, medications, stress, trauma, aging, infections and radiation all deplete glutathione. According to Mark Hyman, MD, glutathione deficiency is common in very ill patients, including people with chronic fatigue syndrome, heart disease, cancer, chronic infections, autoimmune disease, diabetes, autism, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, arthritis, asthma, kidney problems, and liver disease. According to S. Jill James, PhD of the Arkansas Children Research Institute, levels and quality of the glutathione are much lower in autistic children versus typical children. Ask our pharmacist how to improve your glutathione levels and if this therapy is appropriate for you.

Ygrene Energy Fund Florida, the leading provider of property assessed clean energy (PACE) programs for local governments in Florida, recently announced it has funded the first PACE projects in the state. This is a major milestone for Florida and signifies a new era of property improvement and job creation opportunities for cities and counties across the state. The Ygrene program provides residential and commercial property owners with access to low-cost, low-risk capital to implement building upgrades, including hurricane protection, energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. Whereas traditional retrofits can burden property owners with high upfront costs and financial risks, Ygrene’s PACE-financed upgrades are nonrecourse financing repaid via annual property assessments over a 20-year term. In Miami, the Ygrene program has funded its first hurricane resiliency project on a commercial property owned by urban development company Barlington Group, which worked with New Holland PACE Consulting Inc. on the project. A second project is approved and underway. Both properties will receive hurricane resiliency upgrades — including impact-resistant and energy efficient storefronts, windows, and doors — expected to reduce the building owners’ hurricane insurance and energy costs while simultaneously improving the value of each property. These projects total more than $210,000, part of Ygrene’s growing pipeline of over $40 million in PACE-related projects in the region. “Ygrene’s comprehensive PACE program offered us the unique opportunity to enhance our properties without diverting resources away from core operations,” said Martin Pinilla, founder of Barlington Group. “We’ve been consistently impressed with Ygrene’s Florida team, including their work to connect us with nearby contractors to ensure our upgrades are not only being completed by trained professionals, but also creating local jobs in the process.” “This is a breakthrough event for the state of Florida and the nation — one that demonstrates the path toward economic revitalization and reduced energy consump-

tion,” said Stacey Lawson, CEO of Ygrene. “Florida governments and property owners will see immediate and lasting results through the PACE program, and Ygrene is the first administrator in the state to demonstrate the viability of this model.” Ygrene has multiple programs under development across Florida. The company’s first Southeast Florida program, Clean Energy Green Corridor, is a partnership with the cities of Miami, Coral Gables, Cutler Bay, Miami Shores, Palmetto Bay, Pinecrest and South Miami. For the Green Corridor program, Ygrene already has trained and certified more than 200 local contractors to administer upgrades and provide job opportunities throughout the region. For more information, visit online at <CleanEnergyGreenCorridor.com>. Additional municipalities are evaluating Ygrene’s PACE programs. Three more cities in Miami-Dade County now have partnered with Ygrene to begin establishing two new PACE districts, and most recently, Leon and Lee counties ranked Ygrene as the No. 1 firm in each county’s competitive process to select a PACE program administrator. “With all the promises of PACE over the past few years, it’s exciting to see the first projects come to life,” said Miami Mayor Tomás Regalado. “The PACE program has the potential to address three critical needs in our state: hurricane protection, job creation and rising energy costs. The doors are finally opening on this huge opportunity, and I commend Ygrene and the cities involved in this endeavor for their commitment and vision to enact meaningful change in our communities.” Ygrene Energy Fund is the leading developer and administrator of clean energy financing programs throughout the United States. Ygrene’s fully funded Clean Energy Programs provide privately funded and immediately accessible financing for wind hardening, renewable and energy efficiency upgrades to both residential and commercial property owners at no upfront costs. During the next five years, Ygrene’s Clean Energy Districts are projected to create tens of thousands of local jobs and invest hundreds of millions into local economies. Learn more at ygrene.us.

UM 2013 Champ of AAF National UM Sports Hall of Fame Celebrity Student Advertising Competition Dolphin Tournament, June 28-29

BY LEE STEPHENS

For 40 years corporate sponsors have turned to the collegiate members of the American Advertising Federation for fresh ideas and insight on today’s consumers. Through the National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC), the premier student advertising competition in the nation, students from across the country have been challenged to think critically and develop high-level integrated marketing campaigns for some of the country’s most recognizable brands. The American Advertising Federation’s (AAF) University of Miami college chapter has been selected once again as the national champion in the 2013 NSAC. Glidden, the 2013 NSAC sponsor, challenged AAF college chapter members to develop an integrated and multi-platform marketing effort for three different customer segments — DIY renters, current Walmart paint shoppers and DIYers who shop Walmart Home products but do not currently purchase paint. University of Miami was one of 18 teams to advance to the finals in Phoenix

and present their campaign to Glidden’s senior marketing executives: Rob Horton, marketing director, PPG Architectural Coatings; Nestor Hernandez, director, Walmart North America, PPG Architectural Coatings, and Jennifer Ginnetti, Glidden brand manager, PPG Architectural Coatings. “The quality and depth of work that all the students demonstrated both at Nationals and across all 144 participating schools speaks volumes for the talent, creativity and energy that the future generation of marketers possess,” said Eric Stasiowski, director of communications for PPG Architectural Coatings, parent company of NSAC national sponsor Glidden paint. “What we saw were well-thought-out plans backed by insight and strategic thought which ultimately yielded some very real implementable ideas,” he added. University of Miami also was awarded a $1,000 grant from Ad-ology for best use of market research. Miami Children’s Hospital launches free interactive smartphone app BY JENNIFER CAMINAS

Miami Children’s Hospital (MCH) is the first hospital in the country to launch a smartphone app for Apple iOS devices that uses Wi-Fi triangulation technology to offer patients the convenience of an on-campus indoor GPS-like way-finding system, along with other service enhancements. Through the Fit4KidsCare app, families now can connect to MCH’s interactive way-finding campus maps, purchase items from the MCH gift shop, order room service and much more. The app originally was launched in 2010, initially providing families with ER and Urgent Care wait times, directions to the main hospital and its nine outpatient center locations as well as physician directories. In 2013, the hospital updated its app using mobile-software company Meridian’s software development kits for navigation and indoor positioning. Additionally, the hospital also used Cisco’s 802.11n Wi-Fi network and the Mobility Services Engine for computing location information in real time from hundreds of Wi-Fi access points, exposing them centrally to third party software platforms like Meridian. “Miami Children’s Hospital is committed to optimizing the patient and family

experience,” said Ed Martinez, chief information officer. “The new app is one of many tools for supporting families in navigating the campus. It supplements a colorful, child-friendly interior way-finding system that uses colors and animal images as visual cues as well as staff commitment to proactive way-finding support. “In our increasingly technically connected world, the new app adds a new dimension to the process,” he said. Once downloaded, the app’s new, indoor, way-finding feature provides smartphone users with an internal view of the main hospital’s layout. Using indoor positioning, it locates the users on the smart phone and provides step-by-step directions to any desired location within the hospital, similar to a GPS guidance system. The technology is an enhancement to MCH’s dedication to excellence in customer service. The application offers inpatients and their families the ability to order room service from the hospital cafeteria and order gift shop items straight from a mobile device. Families and friends also can send gifts or cards to patients admitted to the hospital by downloading the app. To download the app, visit the iTunes app store from your mobile device and search for Fit4KidsCare. For more information on the Fit4KidsCare app visit online at <www.mch.com/Fit4Kids>.

FNBSM serves the community with stability and originality BY CAROLINA WILSON

Residing on the same familiar corner since 1952, First National Bank of South Miami (FNBSM) continues serving the community of South Miami with stability and originality. Executive vice president Veronica Flores believes that this consistency makes the bank unique. “We’ve had the same ownership and have been in the same corner [5750 Sunset Dr.] for 60 years. In terms of banking that’s quite unusual, especially in South Florida,” Flores said. The bank’s consistent location and ownership parallels its desire to provide consistent service. Flores shares that FNBSM is not merely a “transactional bank.” “We do not just want to do one transaction for you. We want to do your loans, your deposit accounts, your children’s loans, and your youth savings accounts,” Flores said. FNBSM prides itself in sustaining generations of customers. Flores said that some of the bank’s clients have banked there since the 1950s. Additionally, although the bank is one of the first community banks of South Florida, it seeks to fight the reputation of being simply old-fashioned. “We have had the reputation of just being

your father’s and grandfather’s bank and of not knowing much about technology,” Flores said. “But we are the first community bank here to have a YouTube channel.” Additionally, Flores shares that the bank has all “the bells and whistles” of high-tech service including mobile banking as well as an iPhone and Android app. “One of the things that we are coming up with this summer is the ability to take a picture of your deposit with your phone and send it in,” Flores said. “We are also launching bank-to-bank transfers soon.” Another unique aspect of FNBSM is the bank’s desire to encourage and support the personalities of its employees. “We encourage and embrace for all of our officers to have their personalities show through their work. Most banks work in a more corporate environment, where you have to be very sterile and scripted,” Flores said. “Here, we give our officers a lot more autonomy. If you go into any of our officer’s

work areas, you’ll see their interests shine through, whether that be pictures of horses or a collection of clocks.” In addition to personable employees, FNBSM has an involved history of commitment to the South Miami community. “We were the first bank to have a registered art gallery within the bank. We don’t charge any fees,” Flores said. “The first Friday of every month we feature different local artists, giving them an opportunity to show their work in a beautiful setting.” FNBSM is so devoted to the community that last year the bank gave as much in donations and sponsorships as they made in net profit for the bank. “We gave about $125,000 last year, whether it be to local businesses, Fellowship House, South Miami Hospital or the University of Miami,” Flores said. “No one else does it, but it’s the right thing to do.” ––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Pictured in front of the bank in its South Miami location are (l-r) president and director Drew Dammeier, executive vice president Veronica Flores and board chair Bruce MacArthur.

ARE YOU READY FOR HURRICANE SEASON? Batteries Plus® Offers Tips for Staying Powered Up and Connected in the Eye of the Storm

Carlos Quinones

With hurricane season approaching (June through November), residents of South Florida should be prepared for widespread power outages and potential property damage. Batteries

Plus Bulbs, the nation’s largest and fastest-growing battery and light bulb franchise, encourages consumers to take action now by stocking up on essential preparation and safety items. . “One of the most important things when preparing for a storm is stocking-up on a variety of products in bulk that will maximize the battery life of items like flashlights, cell phones, tablets and laptops,” said Carlos Quinones, owner of the Batteries Plus Bulbs in Miami, Fla. “In addition, charging stations and Power Banks, or rechargeable battery packs, are critical items to have in order to maintain communication lines as long as possible so you can stay informed on breaking storm announcements.” In preparation of the impending hurricane season, Batteries Plus Bulbs recommends stocking up on the following items. • Power Inverters –Power inverters

allow you to use a car’s battery to run a variety of electronic devices, including phones, laptops, cameras and other appliances. • Flashlights – As a general rule of thumb, have one flashlight per person in your household. • Backup Chargers for Mobile Devices – External, portable battery packs, including one solar-charged and one extended-capacity battery, can help keep a smartphone juiced up longer than its normal battery life. • Alkaline Batteries – Stock up on two to three sets of backup batteries, including AA, AAA, C, D, 9 volt, and 6 volt, for every device that requires a charge. • Generator Starting Battery – The battery for your home or business generator has been in storage and needs to be checked. Bring in your generator and other batteries to Batteries Plus for free testing. • Emergency Lighting and Exit

Signs – Make sure these are in working order and replace batteries regularly. • Solar charger for car, boat, mobility and more – This will help you recharge when the power is out. • Spare batteries – Consider spare batteries for laptops, mobility and certainly medical devices. • Radios – A battery-powered, twoway or hand-crank radio, plus a NOAA weather radio with tone alert to stay informed about weather and evacuation announcements. Porsche 911 Carrera named Best Convertible at ‘Topless in Miami’ BY RON BEASLEY

the Fiat brand for the third consecutive time,” said Jason Stoicevich, head of Fiat Brand North America. “The Fiat 500 Abarth is the most affordable and fuel-efficient highperformance car in America, and now the Fiat 500 Abarth Cabrio gives you a front-row seat to better hear the raspy signature sound of the Abarth-tuned dual exhausts.” A total of 14 manufacturers participated in the third annual “Topless in Miami” event, designed to showcase the best convertible automobiles on sale in the United States today. The participating manufacturers included Mercedes Benz, Nissan, Infiniti, Jaguar, Porsche, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Ford, Jeep, Audi, Mazda, Fiat, Smart and Volkswagen.

Automotive Editor The Porsche 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet claimed the overall Best Convertible automobile title on June 6 at the third annual “Topless in Miami” event hosted by the Southern Automotive Media Association (SAMA), headquartered at the elegant RitzCarleton Hotel in Key Biscayne. The Porsche Carrera was contested closely in the category by the beautiful Jaguar XKR. However, the Jaguar XKR went on to win the title of Best Exotic Convertible in the voting by 72 SAMA members who drove and graded the 17 participating vehicles on design, ease of convertible operation, and overall driving and handling characteristics. “We’re really pleased with how the manufacturers supported this event and how our members have responded,” said Paul Borden, SAMA board member and event coordinator. “This was our third year and it really was the best yet, with 14 auto manufacturers entering 17 convertibles in the event. And we had a great turnout by our members; more than 70 of them signed in and drove and graded the cars.” It was the second year in a row that the sleek Jaguar XKR has won a trophy in the “Topless in Miami” competition. The Porsche Carrera and Mercedes Benz SLS AMG GT Roadster were the two other entrants in the Exotic Convertible category. At the same time, the BMW M3 Convertible won the trophy in the 2013 Best Luxury Convertible class. It was challenged closely by the Audi A5, the Infiniti G37 IPL and the Mercedes Benz E-Class convertibles. In the Full-Size Convertible Class, the Chrysler 200 Limited won top honors. It was closely followed in the balloting by the BMW 135is and the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara 4x4. “We are truly honored that the members of SAMA have chosen the Chrysler 200 Convertible as the ‘Best Full-size Convertible’ at the third annual ‘Topless in Miam’ event,” said Saad Chehab, president

and CEO, Chrysler Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. “The Chrysler 200 Convertible is packed with an exceptional level of standard content, exquisite style and a dynamic, openair driving experience, at a surprising value.” In the Performance Convertible category, the Nissan 370Z Roadster Tour was judged the best in the category, with the Chevrolet Camaro 2SS and Ford Mustang GT finishing closely behind in very tight voting. In the Small Convertible category, the Fiat 500 once again found favor with SAMA voters as they judged the little Italian car the best for the third consecutive year, the Abarth Cabrio model winning the trophy this year. The Volkswagen Beetle, Mazda MX-5 Miata and Smart EV were runners-up for the Small Convertible trophy. “We want to thank SAMA for recognizing

BMW adds hybrid model to popular 3 Series Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS BMW has added a long-awaited hybrid model to the popular BMW3 Series sport sedan lineup. The design of the new model — ActiveHybrid 3 — is typical BMW, with the hint of a wedge shape underlining the sporty character. The silhouette even reflects the sedan’s balance and the even distribution of weight between the front and rear wheels, while the extra flaring around the rear wheel arches denotes the rear wheel drive. But it’s the hybrid technology that makes this car stand out. The ActiveHybrid 3 blends BMW’s responsive TwinPower Turbo 3.0liter inline 6-cylinder engine mated to an eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission with an electric motor powered by a high-voltage battery. Together the inline 6 and electric motor combine for 335 hp and 332 pound-feet of torque. The powertrain sends combined power to the rear wheels.

The ActiveHybrid 3 is the second hybrid BMW model — after the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 — to use an inline 6-cylinder engine. The engine has won the international “Engine of the Year” award two years in a row. The six-cylinder powerplant’s TwinPower Turbo technology uses a twinscroll turbocharger, High Precision Direct Injection and variable valve timing. It all serves to improve response and rev ability, as well as refinement and efficiency, while an aluminum crankcase helps reduce weight. The ActiveHybrid 3’s electric motor is impressive. It develops a maximum 55 hp and supports all-electric operation around town. It also helps deliver instant acceleration without any lag time and, like all electric motors, develops full torque from a standing start. The motor can drive the sedan emissions free for speeds up to 45 mph for 2.5 miles. The motor is compactly located in the automatic transmission housing and connected to the transmission by a clutch, its operating temperature controlled by the engine cooling system. The motor is powered by a 96-cell lithium-ion high-voltage battery housed under the trunk between the wheels. The battery, developed specifically for the ActiveHybrid 3, is encased in a special high-strength

housing positioned between the wheel arches in the trunk and is uniquely cooled by a system integrated into the car’s air conditioning cooling circuit. The design and location of the battery provides optimal protection for it and helps ensure a well-balanced weight distribution. The internal combustion engine is only started when the driver requires more power; it is then engaged automatically. Its performance can be boosted by the electric motor to provide extra power when acceler-

ating. Under combined ICE/electric power, the ActiveHybrid 3 delivers a 0-60 clocking of 5.3 seconds and a governed top speed of 155 mph. The BMW ActiveHybrid 3 has an MSRP of $50,195. Ron Beasley is the automotive editor for Miami’s Community Newspapers. He may be contacted by calling 305-662-2277, ext. 261, or by addressing email correspondence to <LetsTalkCars@aol.com>.
