Dr. Feldman tells CBBA about new high school BY GARY ALAN RUSE

Some 1,000 expected to find ‘Reason to Run’

r. Lawrence S. Feldman, vice chair of the MiamiDade District School Board for the past three years, visited the Oct. 13 meeting of the Cutler Bay Business Association (CBBA) to bring its members up to date on the new Cutler Bay high school. He also mentioned the progress the board had made since its troubled past. “Three years ago we had a lot of problems,” Dr. Feldman said. “We had a $6 billion budget and only $3 billion coming from taxes. We had a board and a superintendent seat that were pretty much in competition with The Days of Our Lives. We had programs that were not part of schools; they were part of helping vendors. Now, three years later, we’re in better shape.” Dr. Feldman credited current school district superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho for his role in improving the system. Centennial Middle School will become the new high school, grades 9-12, with three advanced academies — the iPrep, Environmental Science and Technology, and a baccalaureate academy called the Cambridge Program, in addition to its

Luis Nuñez guest artist for ‘Art in the Chamber’

Continuing through the month of November the walls of the Homestead Council Chamber are adorned with captivating paintings of Florida’s natural landscapes by famed local artist Luis Nuñez. Councilman Stephen Shelley, who started the “Art in the Chamber” program, inaugurated the exhibit during the Wednesday, Oct. 19, City Council meeting, and invited the community to visit the council chamber and enjoy Nuñez’ paintings. Nuñez paints en plein air and from his studio in Homestead. He works mostly with oil paints on canvas; his subject matter is varied, from still life to an occasional portrait. However, landscape, nature and wildlife painting is his favorite form of expression. Although he invites the opportunity to paint any landscape anywhere in the world, his heart is in the Florida landscape. His Biscayne Bay, Everglades, Big Cypress

and Florida Keys paintings capture the light, colors and mood of this beautiful and unique part of the world. He has participated in numerous juried exhibitions in the United States. His works are displayed in private collections throughout the United States, Europe, Central America and Australia. He was commissioned by Biscayne National Park to decorate an ornament for the 2007 White House’s Christmas tree, celebrating the U.S. National Park Centennial. In 2010, the Florida Governor selected Nuñez as the state’s featured artist for the Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration in Florida. His paintings also are part of public collections such as the Florida International University Art in Public Places, Biscayne National Park, Miami Dade College, Florida Department of State and the Frost Art Museum. normal curriculum. The changes will not be just superficial ones. “We are doing massive renovations so that we can accommodate the iPrep stateof-the-art learning,” Dr. Feldman said. “That is a special type of visual as well as academic equipment. We will be doing that in conjunction with the mayor. It is visually different — it is a college campus in a room. It’s something that our kids grew up with, so they should be using that as their classroom, not forcing them to sit in chairs the way we did because that’s what we knew. We now know a different type of learning and teaching. We just have to move faster.” Dr. Feldman, who brought his chief of staff Jackeline Fals and community involvement specialist Erz Munsie with him, said they would be working with the community. He also said that Centennial could be renamed Cutler Bay High School,

if residents want that. He said the school board has a process by which the town could ask for that change. The new school will open its doors in the fall of 2012. “It’s good,” Dr. Feldman said. “I’m very proud of the mayor and the council, and what they’ve done for this particular school. It makes it easy, and makes it so that everyone comes out a winner, especially the kids.” For his part, Mayor Ed MacDougall had high praise for Dr. Feldman and the improved school board. “We’ve found as the council that working with the Miami-Dade County school system, particularly Dr. Feldman, that they have been extremely helpful and cooperative,” Mayor MacDougall said. “I’m looking forward to a partnership which is blossoming, which will help the school system and the residents of Cutler Bay. It’s been an absolute joy to work with the school system. Their accommodating us has been over the top.”

Dol-Fit is a fun, upbeat interactive assembly designed to encourage students to become fit through education, physical fitness and positive choices.” For the second year, the Walk-AThon also was an opportunity for the school to raise funds for educational programs that are funded through the PTA in an effort to enhance the students’ educational experience. Rachel Blackburn, a PTA vice president, explained. “We had hopes of doubling both our participation as well as our income from last year,” Blackburn said. “Our participation was just shy of that mark, but the students’ fundraising efforts knocked it out of the park.” Whispering Pines Elementary principal Tamela Brown was pleased with how the Walk-A-Thon turned out this year. “The children were all very enthusi-

The “Reason to Run” 5K run/walk is the brainchild of avid marathoners and training partners Linda Martinez and Lisette Zamora. Both women have participated in a number of fundraising events for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. “Finding cures for pediatric cancers took on a special meaning for my family four years ago when my then 5-year-old nephew was diagnosed with a brain tumor,” said Martinez, event organizer. “Through the work of dedicated doctors and nurses, he is winning his fight. “But the fact remains that cancer is the No. 1 disease killer of children, and the treatments currently available often negatively impact the quality of life for those who survive. Events such as this one will help fund lifesaving research while raising awareness that there is still much work to be done.”

After the run/walk, participants will be invited to enter the Deering property for a post-race event that will include a raffle, music, food, drinks, bounce-houses and other entertainment in the family area. All participants will be entered automatically to win one of many raffle prizes. Those wishing to enter, but not run, can make a donation or purchase a raffle ticket for $5. Goodbye, Andy Rooney; I’m going to miss you BY ERNIE SOCHIN Vice Mayor

One of my favorite TV personalities just turned off his camera and microphone at CBS’ 60 Minutes. I say turned off, because he never used the word retire or leaving but it was his last regular appearance on the famous news show. I speak of course of my idol, Andy Rooney. Why my idol? Because he does exactly what I would love to do, only he actually gets paid for it. He also is quite famous, although he hates it when people call out his name or acknowledge him in public. On that we are different. His last TV comment was: “If you see me in a restaurant, please let me enjoy my meal.” Andy, for 39 years, has been able to say just about anything that crosses his mind and, although he did get into trouble for it on a few occasions, for the most part everyone loved him. What he did best is exactly what I try to do, just take ordinary things that we all experience and talk about it in an amusing manner. When I had my radio show, I did the same thing and actually did get paid for it,

but not very much. Here are just a few of my examples: On a trip to Chicago one time, my permanent traveling companion forgot her little makeup bag. She called my son at home and had him ship it to the hotel via FedEx. Then we had to make an immediate trip to Marshall Fields to buy temporary replacement cosmetics so we could go out that evening. The cost was $185. I began to wonder just how much all these blushes, mascaras, conditioners, eyebrow pens, concealers, moisturizers, pencils, etc. actually cost our family each year. My housemate said, “You really didn’t want to know.” So I took my calculator, spread out all her stuff and added it all up. Then in my intimate wisdom and concern for the welfare of our country, multiplied the total times the number of women in the United States who probably use the same stuff. The figure turned out to be many trillions of dollars. My idea was for women to begin contributing these dollars to the government instead and thereby solving the national debt virtually overnight. Shoes: While preparing for a local TV show that I was doing at the time, I began counting the number of shoes in the female 80 percent of my closet. You must notice that

every shopping mall has more women’s shoe stores than hardware stores for men. There must be a reason. I decided to illustrate this on TV by filming the 80 or so boxes of woman’s shoes compared to the three pairs that I owned: Black, Brown and sneakers. (Okay, I exaggerate a bit.) In my mind, that covers just about any combination of clothes that I might need to match. The owner of these woman’s shoes was quite upset with me for many weeks for allowing

people to see into our personal closet. Maybe she was right, but somehow I think Andy Rooney would have gotten away with it. You see, these are just simple stories that just about anyone can relate to and Andy Rooney did it in a masterful way. I, for one, will really miss him being on every Sunday night. Boy, what I wouldn’t give for a job like that, but then I might have to leave Miami’s Community Newspapers and who would want that? (Please don’t answer.)

Farm Bureau honors family, installs officers at meeting BY THERESA A. SMITH

Dade County Farm Bureau honored the Kenneth St. Germain Family as “Farm Family of the Year” during its annual membership meeting luncheon on Oct. 5 at the Redland Golf and Country Club. Miami-Dade County Commissioner Lynda Bell performed the installation of officers and directors ceremony, and immediate past president Larry Dunagan was honored. Farm Bureau announced Alice Pena as president and Jessica Borek as treasurer. Ivonne Alexander recommitted to the office of president-elect, and Phil Marraccini as secretary. George Butler also will continue to serve as second vice president. Pena presented Miami-Dade County Commissioners Lynda Bell and Javier Souto with Ag Advocate awards for their favorable consideration of agriculture in the recent budget process. Miami-Dade agricultural manager Charles LaPradd provided a “State of the County in Agriculture” address and Andrew Walmsley of Florida Farm Bureau updated the Farm Bureau membership with

Jessica Borek, chair of the Women’s Committee presented past-chair Carolann Swanson with the Women’s Leadership Award for her years of dedication and leadership with the Women’s Committee. Debbie Zimmerman of U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen’s office presented outgoing president Larry Dunagan with an American Flag that was flown over nation’s Capitol, and delivered a special message from the congresswoman to Dunagan. Dade County Farm Bureau represents more than 3,200 members, over 700 of whom are actively involved in agribusiness and represent over 900 agricultural operations. ‘Wine On Harvest Moon’ an evening in the Andes BY SHEILA STIEGLITZ

While clouds hid the harvest moon, guests found much to enjoy at the Deering Estate Foundation’s “Taste, Tango and Toast the Andes,” a celebration of the fine food, fine wine and fine art of Chile and Argentina. The signature mid-October fundraiser marked the 10th annual “Wine On Harvest Moon” presented by South BMW. Proceeds from the evening benefit the foundation’s mission to preserve, protect and enhance the historic estate for present and future generations. If they craved something from the sea, Sawa’s Chef Jouven Jean presented a tuna tartar; Sugarcane’s Chef Timon Ballo created a Chilean spiced salmon with pumpkin puree;

Woman speaks to students about growing up in Pakistan BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD

Nighat (Niki) Naseer was thrilled to come to America in 1974. She grew up in Pakistan, one of six daughters who needed to be married. When Naseer and her sisters were born, her father said they were each a blessing from God, but the relatives commiserated because women were seen as a burden. “Thank God there is America for us,” Naseer said. She still visits her homeland to see her family but she is very grateful to be able to return to Miami and the freedoms she has here as a woman. “Even though I have a lot of property back home, I don’t think I can go back and live there,” Naseer said. “It’s very unsafe, especially for Western people.” She has written a book, called Golden Bangles, Hidden Tears, about her experiences growing up in a country that still oppresses women. While the book has been written and professionally edited, she’s still looking for an agent and a publisher. One of Naseer’s purposes in writing the book was to honor her father, who, she said, died because of the pressures of the culture. In an arranged marriage, Naseer was wed to her cousin, who was studying at Miami Dade College’s North Campus. After years of working several jobs at a time, the Naseers saved enough money to purchase a Dunkin Donuts franchise. Over time, they owned many. “We bought the first store in PerrineCutler Ridge in 1983,” she said. At one point they owned the Dunkin Donuts on Kendall Drive just west of 117th Avenue, Kendall Drive and 137th Avenue, in Suniland and Country Walk. She sold the business several years after her husband, Muhammad Naseer, died suddenly. “I wrote in the book, he died for Dunkin Donuts,” she said. “So many we bought and sold. Wherever we go, people called him Dunkin man.” Naseer and her family worked hard at the stores and achieved the American dream, which was quite a contrast from her life in Pakistan. “I had a horrible life until age of 20,” she said. “I describe myself as a Pakistani Cinderella. My husband showed me how

to live a free life.” She describes her life in her book and she goes before school children to talk about how women are treated in Pakistan. “In my country, women don’t have the right to breathe,” she said. Naseer said her sister was beaten every day by her husband because he wanted money from Nasser’s family. Her second sister was almost killed by her husband. “I wanted to go to school when I turned 15,” she said. “I asked my mother please let me go to college for one year. God was on my side. I went for four years. Then the misery started.” The misery came from rejections by potential suitors. She was the third in line to get married but the suitors would pick her younger sisters to court. At one point, things were so bad, she attempted suicide but luckily her mother took her to the hospital. Her mother covered her face for fear that suitors would not want her. Eventually, her cousin asked to marry her and she joined him in America. Naseer goes to schools all over South Florida to give students an idea of how life is in another country. “I tell students, ‘open your eyes,’” she said.

There are dog comfort stations with doggy drinking fountains and water sprays, pooper scoopers to keep the areas clean, and a fabric shade canopy. The Dr. Gilbert Porter Elementary in West Kendall recently received a National School of Distinction status from the Schools Fight Hunger program. The Falls 15th Annual “Miracle on 136th Street” Holiday Parade will be marching its way into South Florida on Saturday, Nov. 19, beginning at 4 p.m., to kick off the most wonderful time of the year. Jennifer Stone, most widely recognized for her role as Harper Finkle (Selena Gomez’s best friend) on Disney’s Wizards of Waverly Place, will be headlining as this year’s celebrity grand marshal. The celebration will include Santa’s first appearance of the season, along with internationally recognized costume characters, marching bands, motorcycles, clowns, vin-

‘New’ whitefly species spreads through parts of South Florida BY RICHARD YAGER

A new whitefly species is defoliating tropical landscapes from plants to stately palms throughout Kendall and other areas of Miami-Dade County. One of 75 species found in Florida, it is identified as the “Gumbo Limbo Spiraling Whitefly” by Catharine Mannion, a specialist at the University of Florida’s Tropical Research and Education Center in Homestead. “These small, winged insects belonging to the Order of Hemiptera [aphids, scales and mealy bugs] typically feed on the underside of leaves with needle-like mouthparts,” she reported in a recent bulletin. An ominous warning that concluded: “Whiteflies can seriously injure host plants by sucking nutrients, causing wilting, yellowing, stunting, leaf drop, or even death.” According to Mannion, the first MiamiDade whitefly was collected in March 2009 from a Miami-Dade gumbo limbo tree, becoming the first report of the insect in the continental U.S. About three times larger than other common whiteflies, the new species, believed to have originated in Central America, has spread from gumbo limbo to black olive, copperleaf, Brazilian pepper, cocoplum, wax myrtle, live oak, mango and several palm tree varieties, including areca and coconut palms. “Since the initial find, there were numerous reports in Miami-Dade County, but now it has already spread into other South Florida areas outside Miami-Dade,” Mannion said, emphasizing the “Spiraling Whitefly” species is not the same creature as the “Ficus Whitefly” that causes defoliation and branch dieback of Florida ficus trees. The extent of the gumbo limbo invasion was estimated to effect up to 120,000 trees in landscaped areas alone in county parks, according to Joe Maguire, the department’s

natural areas manager. Maguire said the whitefly invasion had spread widely in Matheson Hammock where part of its 80 acres has large stands of mahogany and gumbo limbo trees. “This current gumbo limbo whitefly species is proving much more harmful to a wide range of plants and trees than the ficus tree whitefly in 2009,” Maguire said. “Even then, it proved extremely expensive ($50-$100 per tree) to provide insecticide extermination measures throughout all areas of county parks.” Without any budget funds available for the new infestation, Maguire said it appears there is “little that can be done for the current infestation other than wait out the natural cycle of survival.” Joseph Flores, a pest and lawn specialist for Kendall’s “One Two Trees” at 7256 SW 42 Terr., established in 1984, concurs. “We are now finding the insect from as far south as Key West to Broward County,” he said. “As far as I know, the first discov-

ery was along the Miami River. It then spread to Miami Beach, Coral Gables, Coconut Grove and Pinecrest. It began to show up only in gumbo limbo trees, but now it’s spread to different tropical plantings, including palm trees.

“Three of five calls we currently answer ask for inspections and treatment of whitefly infestation,” Flores added. “Treatments involving injections of the Arbor Jet system are the best to save the tree.” Do-it-yourself chemical applications ($5.95 or $15.95 at a home supply store) are not as effective as injection because any application mix needs careful measurement. “Homeowners can do more harm than good if they apply the wrong proportions,” Flores said. His firm has contracted for treatments as high as $2,000 with quarterly re-injections that can run up to $500. “I am very concerned; have it on my palm trees,” said Martha Backer who led a tree-saving project in West Kendall on SW 104th Street. “Black gunky stuff on the underside, and my avocado trees have had little white specks flying around for over a year since I saw them up by the Hammock’s Police Station. “Also, you’ll see them up by the gumbo limbo trees lining SW 104th Street. So, yes, we have them in this neck of the woods.”

Texting or operating a smartphone while driving detracts from the driver’s focus on the road. Another factor often cited in these accidents is the number of passengers in the vehicle. The more passengers in the car, the more the driver’s awareness declines. Late-night driving is an additional factor in driver distraction and risk, because fatigue is more likely and a higher percentage of drivers are under the influence of drugs or alcohol late at night.

City of Hope will celebrate cultural, historic and medical milestones in “An Evening with Lucie Arnaz” to benefit the institution’s world-renowned bone marrow transplantation program. Take Stock in Children — a statewide non-profit organization with a 16-year history of breaking the cycle of poverty by providing scholarships, mentors and hope — will present its inaugural “Strides For Education” 5K Walk/Run around the state on Saturday, Nov. 19. The event is designed to help raise awareness and funds for Florida’s lowincome and at-risk youth who wish to pursue a college education. If you’re not a professional party planner, planning a special event such as a 25th anniversary party or a big holiday bash can be stressful. One of the hardest parts is trying to figure out what needs to be rented. How many tables and chairs? Is a tent needed? And what about those pans that keep food warm? Can you get them in the same place as the chairs? That is where the professionals at Diamonette can help. After 18 years of being a money manager, I have consistently heard how many people do not feel comfortable with their investment decisions. Have you ever second-guessed the investment decisions you have made? Do words like foolish, dumb, wrong, confused, guess, uncertain, frustrated, and overwhelmed describe your feelings? You are not alone in feeling uncomfortable about decisions you have made. Would you like to feel better about your investment decisions? If the answer is yes, then here are some basic steps to consider: Determine if You are a Saver or an Investor If you need guaranteed stability, then you are a saver. When the stock market is positive, many people say that they want to invest and that they are an “investor.” They say that they can tolerate the volatility of the stock market and that their investment time horizon is long term (greater than 10 years). Then 2008 comes along and the stock market (S&P 500) drops 34% and the “investors” now are running for safety as “savers”. Their long-term time horizon has decreased from 10 years to 10 minutes and the risk tolerance has decreased from moderate to minimal. You need to be honest with yourself as to what degree you are a saver or an investor. This is a personal decision that in a perfect world should not be influenced by your family, friends or coworkers.

There are investments for savers and investments for investors. Before you select from the thousand of choices, decide what will make you sleep at night. Don’t rely on a sales rep to tell you what your investment profile is because the sales rep may adjust your profile to fit the suitability of the investment they are trying to sell you.

Focus on the Purpose of Your Investment Do you need to put money away for a rainy day? Make a “To Do List” of items that you want the money to attain such as vacation, education or wedding. Give each item a specific cost such as $5,000 for a vacation. Determine which item motivates you to attain it. Motivation that is ratcheted up is called passion. If you find a passion for an item, that will be your top priority. How quickly you want to attain the item will help determine what investment to consider. Again decide on the specific purpose of the money and then consider your options. Be Realistic with what You have to Invest As an “investor,” you need to accept that you are prepared to lose part or all of your investment. If this risk is not comfortable for you, then you are a saver. There are times when people have borrowed on the equity of their home and invest in the stock market because the potential gains offset the risk of losing their home. People make reckless decisions so that they can attain the item they want quicker than what is realistic. Plan so that if it takes a year to attain an item, you give yourself two years to attain it. If you attain the item in one year, that’s good but don’t beat yourself up if you don’t make your deadline. The important thing is to keep working toward what you want.

Students in several Florida universities can now sell, trade, barter and buy everything from books to bikes via their smartphones, thanks to a new mobile phone application created by students, for students and introduced by Net Element, a technology services provider and Internet publisher. The Yapik app, introduced in September as a pilot at Florida International University (FIU), University of Florida (UF), and the University of Miami (UM), is slated to launch in 12 other schools in January and nationwide in July 2012. As the first location-based mobile commerce application catering specifically to college students, Yapik offers a new, easier way for students to find and barter goods and services within the context of the campus experience. Conceptualized by UM student Sabina Kaplan and University of South Florida (USF) graduate Cristina Dominguez, the app enables students to buy or sell products nearby, chat with other students, view content feeds, create profiles and lists of “favorite” friends. “I got the idea to create Yapik as a college student at UM, because I knew firsthand that in college life, you have to get what you need, quickly, easily and at the right price, or you’ll be left behind,” said Kaplan, Yapik’s founder and current University of Miami student. “College students love their smartphones and love to banter, barter, and buy. New Hyundai Veloster is a three-door coupe with sass Ron Beasley LET’S TALK CARS Hyundai recently introduced a nifty new car to the U.S. market called the Veloster; it’s a compact three-door coupe with all the latest technology and it’s targeted at younger consumers. Veloster combines the style of a coupe and the functionality of a hatchback, while incorporating a third conventionally hinged side door on the passenger side for safe, ready egress or access to the rear seat. The rear door handle is cleverly hidden to maintain the coupe design. The sporty, sleek design should have great appeal to high school and college age buyers. Veloster’s unique design was inspired by today’s high-performance sport motorcycles. With distinctive black A-pillars, the car’s window glass has the look of a motorcycle helmet visor. Up front an aggressive form of Hyundai’s signature hexagonal front grille dominates, along with hood scoop detailing and unique LED position lights. Optional

packages add a chrome grille surround, piano black highlights, fog lights and a massive panoramic sunroof. In profile, Veloster has Hyundai’s “Fluidic Sculpture” character lines, muscular wheel arches, body color door handles and mirrors, and wraparound headlights and taillights. Seventeen-inch alloy wheels are standard and two types of 18-inch wheels are available. The rear has a distinctive glass hatch, dual centered chrome exhaust tips and a black lower fascia that complements the front. On the inside, the center stack and controls resemble a sport bike fuel tank and incorporate an available push-button starter. The air vents are inspired by motorcycle tailpipes, while the floor console resembles the seat of a bike. There are numerous interior metallic accents, with alloy pedals and a leatherwrapped steering wheel and shift knob also available. Under the hood, Veloster is powered by an all-new 1.6-liter GDI Gamma engine paired with either Hyundai’s six-speed manual transmission or the company’s first EcoShift dual-clutch transmission. Either way, the combination delivers a fuel-sipping 40 mpg on the highway. The all-new Gamma 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine is the smallest Hyundai engine to use Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI). GDI tech-
