Dr. Feldman tells CBBA about new high school BY GARY ALAN RUSE
Some 1,000 expected to find ‘Reason to Run’
D
r. Lawrence S. Feldman, vice chair of the MiamiDade District School Board for the past three years, visited the Oct. 13 meeting of the Cutler Bay Business Association (CBBA) to bring its members up to date on the new Cutler Bay high school. He also mentioned the progress the board had made since its troubled past. “Three years ago we had a lot of problems,” Dr. Feldman said. “We had a $6 billion budget and only $3 billion coming from taxes. We had a board and a superintendent seat that were pretty much in competition with The Days of Our Lives. We had programs that were not part of schools; they were part of helping vendors. Now, three years later, we’re in better shape.” Dr. Feldman credited current school district superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho for his role in improving the system. Centennial Middle School will become the new high school, grades 9-12, with three advanced academies — the iPrep, Environmental Science and Technology, and a baccalaureate academy called the Cambridge Program, in addition to its

‘Unbig’ news: smart cars now on sale in Cutler Bay BY DENIE HARRIS
After taking a hiatus of nearly two years, smart, the quirky, iconic vehicle that created the microcar segment in the U.S. is available for purchase again in MiamiDade County. The return of the smart car has been announced by an “unbig” campaign which is the first part of an extensive marketing platform designed to create broader awareness for the smart car among American consumers. Smart center of Cutler Bay is open for business and is positioned to sell vehicles to clients from Key West to Key Biscayne and beyond. Located within the confines of Mercedes-Benz of Cutler Bay, the smart dealership has all the backings of the Mercedes-Benz machine including sales, service and parts. “It is always exciting to Pete Blackwell launch a new product –––––––––––––––––––

line, especially one as unique as the smart cars,” said Pete Blackwell, general manager of Mercedes-Benz of Cutler Bay. “Adding the smart cars to our Cutler Bay dealership will certainly result in us having something for everyone, from the full lineup of Mercedes-
Benz vehicles to Sprinter cargo and passenger vans to the smart cars.” The distinctive smart product line consists of five fortwo models in the U.S., with pricing starting at $12,490: the gasolinepowered smart fortwo in coupe (in “pure” or “passion” configuration) and cabriolet body styles as well as an all-electric version of both the smart fortwo coupe and
cabriolet. Beyond their eclectic design, the fortwo benefits from a strong emphasis on sustainability, safety and customization. Everything that goes into a smart is about perpetuating the importance of sustainability — from the recycled materials used during manufacturing to its congestion-reducing design and its ability to achieve 41 miles per gallon on the highway (the highest highway mpg of any gasoline non-hybrid). Smart cars, which come equipped with eight airbags and a patented tridion safety cell design, provide a high level of occupant protection and have benefited from the innovative safety technology developed over the years by MercedesBenz. “There are many reasons to drive a smart — affordability, practicality, safety, style and environmentally conscience, just to name a few,” Blackwell concluded. “I encourage everyone to come and take this car for a test drive — you will be amazed!” Smart center of Cutler Bay is located at 10701 SW 211 St., Cutler Bay, within the Mercedes-Benz of Cutler Bay dealership. Luis Nuñez guest artist for ‘Art in the Chamber’
Artist Luis Nuñez talks about his work during the Oct. 19 Homestead City Council meeting. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
BY BEGOÑE CAZALIS
Continuing through the month of November the walls of the Homestead Council Chamber are adorned with captivating paintings of Florida’s natural landscapes by famed local artist Luis Nuñez. Councilman Stephen Shelley, who started the “Art in the Chamber” program, inaugurated the exhibit during the Wednesday, Oct. 19, City Council meeting, and invited the community to visit the council chamber and enjoy Nuñez’ paintings. Nuñez paints en plein air and from his studio in Homestead. He works mostly with oil paints on canvas; his subject matter is varied, from still life to an occasional portrait. However, landscape, nature and wildlife painting is his favorite form of expression. Although he invites the opportunity to paint any landscape anywhere in the world, his heart is in the Florida landscape. His Biscayne Bay, Everglades, Big Cypress
and Florida Keys paintings capture the light, colors and mood of this beautiful and unique part of the world. He has participated in numerous juried exhibitions in the United States. His works are displayed in private collections throughout the United States, Europe, Central America and Australia. He was commissioned by Biscayne National Park to decorate an ornament for the 2007 White House’s Christmas tree, celebrating the U.S. National Park Centennial. In 2010, the Florida Governor selected Nuñez as the state’s featured artist for the Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration in Florida. His paintings also are part of public collections such as the Florida International University Art in Public Places, Biscayne National Park, Miami Dade College, Florida Department of State and the Frost Art Museum. Some of his work may be seen on his website at <www.LNunez.com> and he may be contacted by email at <LuisNunez@LNunez.com>.

normal curriculum. The changes will not be just superficial ones. “We are doing massive renovations so that we can accommodate the iPrep stateof-the-art learning,” Dr. Feldman said. “That is a special type of visual as well as academic equipment. We will be doing that in conjunction with the mayor. It is visually different — it is a college campus in a room. It’s something that our kids grew up with, so they should be using that as their classroom, not forcing them to sit in chairs the way we did because that’s what we knew. We now know a different type of learning and teaching. We just have to move faster.” Dr. Feldman, who brought his chief of staff Jackeline Fals and community involvement specialist Erz Munsie with him, said they would be working with the community. He also said that Centennial could be renamed Cutler Bay High School,
if residents want that. He said the school board has a process by which the town could ask for that change. The new school will open its doors in the fall of 2012. “It’s good,” Dr. Feldman said. “I’m very proud of the mayor and the council, and what they’ve done for this particular school. It makes it easy, and makes it so that everyone comes out a winner, especially the kids.” For his part, Mayor Ed MacDougall had high praise for Dr. Feldman and the improved school board. “We’ve found as the council that working with the Miami-Dade County school system, particularly Dr. Feldman, that they have been extremely helpful and cooperative,” Mayor MacDougall said. “I’m looking forward to a partnership which is blossoming, which will help the school system and the residents of Cutler Bay. It’s been an absolute joy to work with the school system. Their accommodating us has been over the top.”

Dol-Fit is a fun, upbeat interactive assembly designed to encourage students to become fit through education, physical fitness and positive choices.” For the second year, the Walk-AThon also was an opportunity for the school to raise funds for educational programs that are funded through the PTA in an effort to enhance the students’ educational experience. Rachel Blackburn, a PTA vice president, explained. “We had hopes of doubling both our participation as well as our income from last year,” Blackburn said. “Our participation was just shy of that mark, but the students’ fundraising efforts knocked it out of the park.” Whispering Pines Elementary principal Tamela Brown was pleased with how the Walk-A-Thon turned out this year. “The children were all very enthusi-
astic and energized about the event,” Brown said. “Those that participated really seemed to have enjoyed themselves as well as the many volunteers that provided support.” The Walk-A-Thon, which Espinosa said is now being referred to by many as more of a “sports-a-thon” would not have been nearly as successful without the generous support from Zoo Miami, BJs Wholesale Club, Target, Publix #328, SuperWheels, Palmetto Bay Mini Golf, Miami Science Museum, All Stars Frozen Yogurt, Miami Fitness Gallery, Pepsi Co., Baptist Children’s Diagnostic Center, Jumperoos, My Gym, Integrity Martial Arts, Kendall Collision, S. Goodbye, Andy Rooney; I’m going to miss you BY ERNIE SOCHIN Vice Mayor
One of my favorite TV personalities just turned off his camera and microphone at CBS’ 60 Minutes. I say turned off, because he never used the word retire or leaving but it was his last regular appearance on the famous news show. I speak of course of my idol, Andy Rooney. Why my idol? Because he does exactly what I would love to do, only he actually gets paid for it. He also is quite famous, although he hates it when people call out his name or acknowledge him in public. On that we are different. His last TV comment was: “If you see me in a restaurant, please let me enjoy my meal.” Andy, for 39 years, has been able to say just about anything that crosses his mind and, although he did get into trouble for it on a few occasions, for the most part everyone loved him. What he did best is exactly what I try to do, just take ordinary things that we all experience and talk about it in an amusing manner. When I had my radio show, I did the same thing and actually did get paid for it,
but not very much. Here are just a few of my examples: On a trip to Chicago one time, my permanent traveling companion forgot her little makeup bag. She called my son at home and had him ship it to the hotel via FedEx. Then we had to make an immediate trip to Marshall Fields to buy temporary replacement cosmetics so we could go out that evening. The cost was $185. I began to wonder just how much all these blushes, mascaras, conditioners, eyebrow pens, concealers, moisturizers, pencils, etc. actually cost our family each year. My housemate said, “You really didn’t want to know.” So I took my calculator, spread out all her stuff and added it all up. Then in my intimate wisdom and concern for the welfare of our country, multiplied the total times the number of women in the United States who probably use the same stuff. The figure turned out to be many trillions of dollars. My idea was for women to begin contributing these dollars to the government instead and thereby solving the national debt virtually overnight. Shoes: While preparing for a local TV show that I was doing at the time, I began counting the number of shoes in the female 80 percent of my closet. You must notice that
every shopping mall has more women’s shoe stores than hardware stores for men. There must be a reason. I decided to illustrate this on TV by filming the 80 or so boxes of woman’s shoes compared to the three pairs that I owned: Black, Brown and sneakers. (Okay, I exaggerate a bit.) In my mind, that covers just about any combination of clothes that I might need to match. The owner of these woman’s shoes was quite upset with me for many weeks for allowing
people to see into our personal closet. Maybe she was right, but somehow I think Andy Rooney would have gotten away with it. You see, these are just simple stories that just about anyone can relate to and Andy Rooney did it in a masterful way. I, for one, will really miss him being on every Sunday night. Boy, what I wouldn’t give for a job like that, but then I might have to leave Miami’s Community Newspapers and who would want that? (Please don’t answer.)

‘Wine On Harvest Moon’ an evening in the Andes BY SHEILA STIEGLITZ
While clouds hid the harvest moon, guests found much to enjoy at the Deering Estate Foundation’s “Taste, Tango and Toast the Andes,” a celebration of the fine food, fine wine and fine art of Chile and Argentina. The signature mid-October fundraiser marked the 10th annual “Wine On Harvest Moon” presented by South BMW. Proceeds from the evening benefit the foundation’s mission to preserve, protect and enhance the historic estate for present and future generations. During the past several months, Chile’s Consul General Juan Luis Nilo and his dedicated staff at Pro Chile helped Deering Estate Foundation director Mary Pettit and her committee create a true Andean experience that included musicians playing pan flutes and guitars, and traditionally costumed folk dancers. With a glass and plate in hand, partygoers headed for the many food and wine tasting stations throughout the Stone House and Richmond Cottage. Their greatest challenge was where to begin to feast? If they craved something from the sea, Sawa’s Chef Jouven Jean presented a tuna tartar; Sugarcane’s Chef Timon Ballo created a Chilean spiced salmon with pumpkin puree;
Pictured (l-r) are Palmetto Bay Councilmember Joan Lindsay; Councilmember Howard Tendrich, event chair, and Mayor Shelley Stanczyk.
Red Fish Grill’s Chef Greg True served poached shrimp with chickpea fritters, and Paella Party offered up its popular specialty. If meat was what the guests desired, they headed to Smith & Wollensky’s station for filet mignon on gaulettes; Catering Concepts served skewers of Gaucho Brochette Carne Trio; Creative Taste prepared steak sliders; The Local offered braised short ribs; Rincon Argentino presented empanadas and chorizo,
and Ana Capri had an assortment of pasta. For a sweet ending, the Bakehouse at Whole Foods Market Coral Gables catered the desserts. Culinary students from Johnson & Wales University assisted all of the presenting food and wine sponsors. The wine tastings, presented by Crown Wine & Spirits, were exceptional, not only for the variety and quality of wines poured, but also because of the winemakers and winery

Woman speaks to students about growing up in Pakistan BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD
Nighat (Niki) Naseer was thrilled to come to America in 1974. She grew up in Pakistan, one of six daughters who needed to be married. When Naseer and her sisters were born, her father said they were each a blessing from God, but the relatives commiserated because women were seen as a burden. “Thank God there is America for us,” Naseer said. She still visits her homeland to see her family but she is very grateful to be able to return to Miami and the freedoms she has here as a woman. “Even though I have a lot of property back home, I don’t think I can go back and live there,” Naseer said. “It’s very unsafe, especially for Western people.” She has written a book, called Golden Bangles, Hidden Tears, about her experiences growing up in a country that still oppresses women. While the book has been written and professionally edited, she’s still looking for an agent and a publisher. One of Naseer’s purposes in writing the book was to honor her father, who, she said, died because of the pressures of the culture. In an arranged marriage, Naseer was wed to her cousin, who was studying at Miami Dade College’s North Campus. After years of working several jobs at a time, the Naseers saved enough money to purchase a Dunkin Donuts franchise. Over time, they owned many. “We bought the first store in PerrineCutler Ridge in 1983,” she said. At one point they owned the Dunkin Donuts on Kendall Drive just west of 117th Avenue, Kendall Drive and 137th Avenue, in Suniland and Country Walk. She sold the business several years after her husband, Muhammad Naseer, died suddenly. “I wrote in the book, he died for Dunkin Donuts,” she said. “So many we bought and sold. Wherever we go, people called him Dunkin man.” Naseer and her family worked hard at the stores and achieved the American dream, which was quite a contrast from her life in Pakistan. “I had a horrible life until age of 20,” she said. “I describe myself as a Pakistani Cinderella. My husband showed me how

to live a free life.” She describes her life in her book and she goes before school children to talk about how women are treated in Pakistan. “In my country, women don’t have the right to breathe,” she said. Naseer said her sister was beaten every day by her husband because he wanted money from Nasser’s family. Her second sister was almost killed by her husband. “I wanted to go to school when I turned 15,” she said. “I asked my mother please let me go to college for one year. God was on my side. I went for four years. Then the misery started.” The misery came from rejections by potential suitors. She was the third in line to get married but the suitors would pick her younger sisters to court. At one point, things were so bad, she attempted suicide but luckily her mother took her to the hospital. Her mother covered her face for fear that suitors would not want her. Eventually, her cousin asked to marry her and she joined him in America. Naseer goes to schools all over South Florida to give students an idea of how life is in another country. “I tell students, ‘open your eyes,’” she said.

The free event will feature lots of great activities for dogs and their owners. Activities include a “Best Dressed” contest for a chance to win a $100 gift certificate from Pet Supermarket; a “Best Tricks” contest and an “Agility” contest, conducted by recognized dog training experts Canine Counselors, each for a chance to win a $100 gift certificate from Canine Counselors. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the photos will benefit the Parks Foundation of Miami-Dade. The family friendly event also will feature a bounce house for kids, food trucks, and pet supplies and information booths. If you don’t own a dog and would like one, the Miami-Dade Animal Services Department will
be on-site with several adorable pooches available for pet adoptions. Pet Supermarket is the department’s Premier Partner of Miami-Dade Dog Parks and has hosted several events throughout the year at all five county canine facilities, providing dog and park patrons an enhanced dog park experience. The 6.5-acre West Kendall District dog park is divided into two areas, one for larger dogs weighing over 35 pounds and one for smaller dogs weighing less than 35 pounds. Both areas feature dog play equipment for fun and exercise, such as tire jumps, a paws table, and others. There are dog comfort stations with doggy drinking fountains and water sprays, pooper scoopers to keep the areas clean, and a fabric shade canopy. Also at this site is an information kiosk, park benches, picnic areas, a public restroom facility and parking. A walkway connects all areas of the dog park and makes it ADA accessible.

The Dr. Gilbert Porter Elementary in West Kendall recently received a National School of Distinction status from the Schools Fight Hunger program. The school donated 1,062 pounds of food to help the hungry in the community. Fewer than 2,000 schools nationwide earned this level of distinction in the 2010-11 school year. The National School of Distinction status is awarded to schools that demonstrate notable enthusiasm, creativity or dedication in getting involved with the hunger cause. Whether its activating students around a school-wide food drive, organizing volunteers for a local pantry or food bank, or cultivating a school garden to provide fresh produce for the cause, schools all across the country have been playing a larger and larger role in helping to fight hunger nationwide. “The students, staff and families of our School of Distinction schools should be very proud of their efforts and the impact they’re
making on the hunger cause,” said Tim Sullivan, Schools Fight Hunger founder. “Of course, the short-term results are impressive, but we also love to see how our next generation of leaders are getting active in their communities at such a young age. In a day when so much news about our kids and our schools seems so negative, these schools and these students are well worth celebrating.” Complete details about the Dr. Gilbert Porter Elementary 2010-11 efforts, as well as details about all 2011 honorees, can be found on the “Schools Fighting” profile pages at <www.schoolsfighthunger.org>. The Schools Fight Hunger program itself is a 2-year-old initiative focused on connecting schools nationwide with the hunger cause, helping those schools fight hunger most effectively, celebrating the good work of schools and students and inspiring our next generation of leaders on the value of service. Local schools looking to get involved, get help or report their own good hunger-fighting work, can learn more at <www.schoolsfighthunger.org>.

‘New’ whitefly species spreads through parts of South Florida BY RICHARD YAGER
A new whitefly species is defoliating tropical landscapes from plants to stately palms throughout Kendall and other areas of Miami-Dade County. One of 75 species found in Florida, it is identified as the “Gumbo Limbo Spiraling Whitefly” by Catharine Mannion, a specialist at the University of Florida’s Tropical Research and Education Center in Homestead. “These small, winged insects belonging to the Order of Hemiptera [aphids, scales and mealy bugs] typically feed on the underside of leaves with needle-like mouthparts,” she reported in a recent bulletin. An ominous warning that concluded: “Whiteflies can seriously injure host plants by sucking nutrients, causing wilting, yellowing, stunting, leaf drop, or even death.” According to Mannion, the first MiamiDade whitefly was collected in March 2009 from a Miami-Dade gumbo limbo tree, becoming the first report of the insect in the continental U.S. About three times larger than other common whiteflies, the new species, believed to have originated in Central America, has spread from gumbo limbo to black olive, copperleaf, Brazilian pepper, cocoplum, wax myrtle, live oak, mango and several palm tree varieties, including areca and coconut palms. “Since the initial find, there were numerous reports in Miami-Dade County, but now it has already spread into other South Florida areas outside Miami-Dade,” Mannion said, emphasizing the “Spiraling Whitefly” species is not the same creature as the “Ficus Whitefly” that causes defoliation and branch dieback of Florida ficus trees. The extent of the gumbo limbo invasion was estimated to effect up to 120,000 trees in landscaped areas alone in county parks, according to Joe Maguire, the department’s
Pictured are a healthy olive tree leaf (right) and whitefly-devastated example (left). –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
natural areas manager. Maguire said the whitefly invasion had spread widely in Matheson Hammock where part of its 80 acres has large stands of mahogany and gumbo limbo trees. “This current gumbo limbo whitefly species is proving much more harmful to a wide range of plants and trees than the ficus tree whitefly in 2009,” Maguire said. “Even then, it proved extremely expensive ($50-$100 per tree) to provide insecticide extermination measures throughout all areas of county parks.” Without any budget funds available for the new infestation, Maguire said it appears there is “little that can be done for the current infestation other than wait out the natural cycle of survival.” Joseph Flores, a pest and lawn specialist for Kendall’s “One Two Trees” at 7256 SW 42 Terr., established in 1984, concurs. “We are now finding the insect from as far south as Key West to Broward County,” he said. “As far as I know, the first discov-
ery was along the Miami River. It then spread to Miami Beach, Coral Gables, Coconut Grove and Pinecrest. It began to show up only in gumbo limbo trees, but now it’s spread to different tropical plantings, including palm trees.
“Three of five calls we currently answer ask for inspections and treatment of whitefly infestation,” Flores added. “Treatments involving injections of the Arbor Jet system are the best to save the tree.” Do-it-yourself chemical applications ($5.95 or $15.95 at a home supply store) are not as effective as injection because any application mix needs careful measurement. “Homeowners can do more harm than good if they apply the wrong proportions,” Flores said. His firm has contracted for treatments as high as $2,000 with quarterly re-injections that can run up to $500. “I am very concerned; have it on my palm trees,” said Martha Backer who led a tree-saving project in West Kendall on SW 104th Street. “Black gunky stuff on the underside, and my avocado trees have had little white specks flying around for over a year since I saw them up by the Hammock’s Police Station. “Also, you’ll see them up by the gumbo limbo trees lining SW 104th Street. So, yes, we have them in this neck of the woods.”
Distracted Driving Using your cell phone while driving, even using a hands-free device, can delay your reaction time as much as driving with a blood alcohol level of the legal limit .08%. Using your cell phone while driving limits brain activity related to the operation of the vehicle by over a third. As a result, the use of a handheld device while driving quadruples your chance of suffering a serious car accident and related injuries. Distracted driving leads to almost 20% of fatal crashes each year. At the start of 2011, text messaging while driving was illegal in 30 states. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers in America. Those fatalities are not solely due to alcohol consumption or failure to wear a seat belt. There are several common distractions for teen drivers. First, cell phone use is a key culprit in many of these tragedies. Texting or operating a smartphone while driving detracts from the driver’s focus on the road. Another factor often cited in these accidents is the number of passengers in the vehicle. The more passengers in the car, the more the driver’s awareness declines. Late-night driving is an additional factor in driver distraction and risk, because fatigue is more likely and a higher percentage of drivers are under the influence of drugs or alcohol late at night.
Panter’s Pointers for safe driving: 1. Always wear your seat belt. 2. Never text while driving. 3. If you must use your cell phone, use a hands-free device. 4. Avoid late-night driving whenever possible. “Let our Family Help you and your Family.”

Author Massie back with new book, Catherine The Great BY GISELLE-MARIE ROIG
The Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Peter the Great, Nicholas and Alexandra, and The Romanovs returns with the longawaited, extraordinary biography, Catherine The Great (Random House; on sale Nov. 8). It has been 30 years since Robert K. Massie’s last major biography of a Russian leader, and years of research have gone into the mammoth task of recreating Catherine the Great’s remarkable life — a life of coups, plots, murders, regicide; of lovers, affairs, marital neglect; of intersections with Voltaire, Diderot, Mozart, Frederick the Great, Potemkin and dozens of other remarkable figures. Born Sophia of Anhalt-Zerbst, an unwanted female child of lesser Prussian nobility, Catherine was neglected by her parents, who hoped to marry her young and see her deposited far away in a rural castle. A series of coincidences led Empress Elizabeth of Russia to send for young Catherine as a prospective bride for the tsar-to-be, Peter — a fidgety, unhappy 16year-old still playing with toy soldiers on his bed. Catherine and her mother set off in the dead of winter for St. Petersburg, wrapped in furs in horse-drawn sleds, with no idea that the teenage girl would soon experience a meteoric rise to power — an ascent that will ultimately see her become a pivotal figure of the Enlightenment era, and one of the most powerful and influential women who ever lived. Catherine The Great’s range of influence is unparalleled: • She corresponded regularly with the French philosophers Diderot, d’Alembert, and especially Voltaire — all influenced her greatly, both personally and politically. • She was a pioneer in public health,
building orphanages and becoming the first royal anywhere in Europe or Russia to be inoculated for smallpox, putting an end to fears and superstitions and saving millions of lives through her example. • She applied the principles of the Enlightenment to a new Russian constitution, The Nakaz, and institutes the Legislative Commission, nine years before Thomas Jefferson wrote the American Declaration of Independence and 22 years before Louis XVI’s summons to the Estates-General. • She acquired art collections containing pieces by Caravaggio, Rubens, Rembrandt, and a vast collection of British-owned art, cementing her as Europe’s foremost collector. During her reign, she amassed almost four thousand paintings and built a palace to house her collection — now known as the Hermitage Museum, one of the oldest and largest museums in the world. • She oversaw the building of the Russian navy and the wars to expand Russia down to the Black Sea and into the Ottoman Empire, opening up Russian com-

merce and tipping the balance of power in the region to Russia’s favor. • To discourage infanticide among unmarried and impoverished mothers, she established with her own funds a foundling hospital…the anonymity of the mother was assured by a system of baskets, pulleys and bells. When a bell was rung in the street, a basket was lowered from an upper storey, the unwanted baby put in, and the basket was raised. All children, legitimate or illegitimate, from any class, were accepted,
cared for, and educated. • She had 12 lovers: The first three, Saltykov, Poniatowski, and Gregory Orlov, before she reached the throne at 33, the other nine during her 34 years as empress. Of the twelve, she loved five: Poniatowsky, Orlov, Potemkin, Zavadovsky, and Alexander Lanskoy. For another three — Saltykov, Alexander Rimsky-Korsakov, and Alexander Mamonov — she felt passion. Three others — Vasilchikov, Simon Zorich and Alexander Yermolov — were quickly chosen and quickly discarded. The 12th and last, Platon Zubov, was in a category of his own. • She ruled Russia for a full three decades. Urgently readable and absolutely absorbing, Catherine The Great is the work of a master of narrative history, who in Catherine has found some of the greatest subject matter imaginable. Drawing from her explicit diaries and thousands of letters, Robert Massie has created a landmark work of history, bringing to life not only this singular woman, but an entire nation in the throes of extraordinary change. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Robert K. Massie, who will be in Miami on Nov. 19 for the Miami Book Fair International, was born in Lexington, KY, and studied American Studies at Yale and modern European history at Oxford, which he attended as a Rhodes Scholar. He was president of the Authors Guild from 1987 to 1991. His other previous books include, Nicholas and Alexandra, Peter the Great (for which he won a Pulitzer Prize for biography), The Romanovs: The Final Chapter; Dreadnought: Britain, Germany, and the Coming of the Great War, and Castles of Steel: Britain, Germany, and the Winning of the Great War at Sea.

Diamonette rents tents, party supplies for events big, small BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD
If you’re not a professional party planner, planning a special event such as a 25th anniversary party or a big holiday bash can be stressful. One of the hardest parts is trying to figure out what needs to be rented. How many tables and chairs? Is a tent needed? And what about those pans that keep food warm? Can you get them in the same place as the chairs? That is where the professionals at Diamonette can help. The company has been in business since 1987 and is so good at what it does that it is hired by major corporations, festivals and Super Bowl committees to handle party rentals. Best of all, Diamonette owners have not forgotten where they came from. The owners — Carlos Melendez, president; Steve Calderon, vice president, and David Calderon, vice president of sales — consider a family party as important as a corporate event and they make sure the quality is there for the average consumer as well as the Orange Bowl Festival. Diamonette also is looking to expand into the school market. They already work with a number of private and public schools, but are interested in doing more school special events. “We have our feet firmly on the ground,”
Steve Calderon said. “We have the mentality of a mom and pop store. We have the reliability. We are innovative. And we continue with the same passion and energy we had when we started in 1987.” While Diamonette has a website that lists everything it rents and a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section, Steve said it is better for someone who is planning a party to call in. “We are skilled in assisting people with their special event,” David said. “We know our equipment and we know how it functions.” Not only that, but there often are specials that customers only can learn about if they call or come in. Walk-ins are encouraged. The Doral warehouse, 11091 NW 27 St., has a showroom and there are specialists waiting to guide customers through their services and available rentals. Diamonette Party Rental was founded in 1987 by Melendez and Steve Calderon. Melendez had a party store on SW 117th Avenue and Sunset Drive and Calderon was interested in investing. “He liked the rental aspect of the business,” Melendez said. They started in a 1,600-square-foot warehouse and over the years they have become the

largest full-service party rental company in Miami-Dade. Today, they are occupying 65,000 square feet in a warehouse in Doral with room to expand. Diamonette employs 80 to 100 people year-round and up to 180 in season. They work with the Orange Bowl Committee, Super Bowl, Sun Life Stadium, Coconut Grove Arts Festival, South Miami Arts Festival, Boat Show and other major events. But they want everyone to know they don’t want to work only with the big parties; they want to work with everyone. “This business is all service oriented,” Melendez said. They take pride in making sure that everything they rent is in perfect condition, that plates, glasses and cutlery are clean and spotless when they are sent to an event. “We are only as good as our last event,” Steve said. “Our philosophy is that we have to get a base hit every time at the plate. We are on time delivery. We deliver what we say we will.” Melendez said that philosophy is instilled in all of the employees, which helps to make sure the customer gets a great experience when working with Diamonette. How To Feel Comfortable About App created by and for college Your Investment Decisions students launched at local ‘U’s By Rick Tonkinson
CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM
After 18 years of being a money manager, I have consistently heard how many people do not feel comfortable with their investment decisions. Have you ever second-guessed the investment decisions you have made? Do words like foolish, dumb, wrong, confused, guess, uncertain, frustrated, and overwhelmed describe your feelings? You are not alone in feeling uncomfortable about decisions you have made. Would you like to feel better about your investment decisions? If the answer is yes, then here are some basic steps to consider: Determine if You are a Saver or an Investor If you need guaranteed stability, then you are a saver. When the stock market is positive, many people say that they want to invest and that they are an “investor.” They say that they can tolerate the volatility of the stock market and that their investment time horizon is long term (greater than 10 years). Then 2008 comes along and the stock market (S&P 500) drops 34% and the “investors” now are running for safety as “savers”. Their long-term time horizon has decreased from 10 years to 10 minutes and the risk tolerance has decreased from moderate to minimal. You need to be honest with yourself as to what degree you are a saver or an investor. This is a personal decision that in a perfect world should not be influenced by your family, friends or coworkers.
There are investments for savers and investments for investors. Before you select from the thousand of choices, decide what will make you sleep at night. Don’t rely on a sales rep to tell you what your investment profile is because the sales rep may adjust your profile to fit the suitability of the investment they are trying to sell you.
Focus on the Purpose of Your Investment Do you need to put money away for a rainy day? Make a “To Do List” of items that you want the money to attain such as vacation, education or wedding. Give each item a specific cost such as $5,000 for a vacation. Determine which item motivates you to attain it. Motivation that is ratcheted up is called passion. If you find a passion for an item, that will be your top priority. How quickly you want to attain the item will help determine what investment to consider. Again decide on the specific purpose of the money and then consider your options. Be Realistic with what You have to Invest As an “investor,” you need to accept that you are prepared to lose part or all of your investment. If this risk is not comfortable for you, then you are a saver. There are times when people have borrowed on the equity of their home and invest in the stock market because the potential gains offset the risk of losing their home. People make reckless decisions so that they can attain the item they want quicker than what is realistic. Plan so that if it takes a year to attain an item, you give yourself two years to attain it. If you attain the item in one year, that’s good but don’t beat yourself up if you don’t make your deadline. The important thing is to keep working toward what you want.

Students in several Florida universities can now sell, trade, barter and buy everything from books to bikes via their smartphones, thanks to a new mobile phone application created by students, for students and introduced by Net Element, a technology services provider and Internet publisher. The Yapik app, introduced in September as a pilot at Florida International University (FIU), University of Florida (UF), and the University of Miami (UM), is slated to launch in 12 other schools in January and nationwide in July 2012. As the first location-based mobile commerce application catering specifically to college students, Yapik offers a new, easier way for students to find and barter goods and services within the context of the campus experience. Conceptualized by UM student Sabina Kaplan and University of South Florida (USF) graduate Cristina Dominguez, the app enables students to buy or sell products nearby, chat with other students, view content feeds, create profiles and lists of “favorite” friends. “I got the idea to create Yapik as a college student at UM, because I knew firsthand that in college life, you have to get what you need, quickly, easily and at the right price, or you’ll be left behind,” said Kaplan, Yapik’s founder and current University of Miami student. “College students love their smartphones and love to banter, barter, and buy. Yapik is the perfect college app for this. Yapik is your campus connection in the palm of your hand.” Armando Ibarra, Yapik’s product manager, a 2006 Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) graduate, added, “We are very excited to be launching an innovative social e-commerce platform in the

Sir Pizza official pizza at new Marlins Ballpark BY MICHELLE VEGA
Rene Prats and his partners at Sir Pizza recently announced the signing of the Miami Marlins as a franchisee in a 10-year deal at the new Marlins Ballpark. As part of the franchise agreement, Sir Pizza will operate two stands in the Promenade Level, one in the Legends Level and one in the Vista area. With this move, Sir Pizza continues its expansion and presence in South Florida. During the past year, Sir Pizza has grown to include 10 locations in Miami-Dade and Broward as well as a Mobile Truck. Three more locations are slated to open in 2011. “We are very pleased to be bringing two winning teams together for this joint marketing effort,” said Prats, Sir Pizza South Florida CEO. “We at Sir Pizza are longtime fans and supporters of the Marlins. We’ve waited a long time for a ballpark in this town,
and we’re excited to be part of this new era in Marlins’ history. We look forward to a successful partnership over the next 10 years and beyond.” As the new Marlins Ballpark continues to transform the Miami skyline, the Marlins franchise has been forging deals with vendors to supply food at the site. The overall mission for the Marlins is to offer superior quality food that represents all the wonderful flavors and tastes that make up this multicultural community. Sir Pizza is one of those unique tastes. “We are very pleased to announce a partnership with Sir Pizza,” said David Samson, Marlins president. “Pizza is a critical component of the ballpark experience and Sir Pizza is the best. The quality is first class and will be enjoyed by Miami Marlins fans for decades to come.” For more information about Sir Pizza visit the website at <www.sirpizzarestaurants.com>.
Construction is underway at one of the concession stands where they will sell Sir Pizza at the new Marlins Ballpark. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Dental American Group opens its fifth location in West Kendall
Magic City Casino unveils musical lineup for coming concert season BY SANDRA M. RODRIGUEZ
(From left to right) Dr. Sonia Tavares, Anita Gonzalez, Dr. Roxanna Guzman, Zully Rodriguez, Yulaisis Rieumont, Lety Herrera, Dr. Marielba Maniglia, Manuel Gonzalez, Administrator Dental American Group, Dr. Lilian Gonzalez, Owner Dental American Group, Mary Scott Russell, President Chamber South, Nidia Espinoza, Arabellys Jimenez and Sofia Machin –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
BY SUSAN SMITH Twenty years ago Dr. Lilian Gonzalez took a good look around the dental practice community in South Florida and observed the service and delivery of dental care needed a deep cleaning. Dr. Gonzalez determined that opening up her own practice with a comprehensive focus and concentrated patient service orientation was the solution. Today, Dr. Gonzalez, her team of associate dentists and staff are celebrating the grand opening of their fifth Dental American Group location in West Kendall. “We are here today to celebrate the vision of Dr. Gonzalez to better serve the dental needs of South Florida as we embark upon establishing our fifth location,” said Operations Manager for Dental American Group Mariella Gomez-Lowman at the new location’s recent ribbon cutting event. “We have been so successful because of our excellent service and exceptional patient care. This is why the practice is thriving, because not only do we make our patients feel totally comfortable but we also offer specialty care so patient referrals are unnecessary and all of our patient’s treatment needs can be performed right here at our office,” continued Ms. Gomez-Lowman. In addition to standard general dentistry, the team at Dental American Group also offers a wide range of specialty care solutions such as orthodontics, periodontics, endodontics, dental implants, oral surgery, pediatric and cosmetic dentistry. True to the practice’s mission of patient
comfort, education and quality dentistry, the Dental American Group offers state of the art technology such as digital radiographs, thus reducing the patient’s exposure to radiation by up to 90% compared to conventional film X-rays. Chair-side computers and intra-oral cameras allow doctors, dental assistants and hygienist to visually demonstrate to the patient what is happening in their particular situation, making it easier to impart critical information and understanding to the patient and reduce stress and anxiety about their particular condition. Dr. Gonzalez says, “The most important priority in our office is the patient, always the patient. Listening to their concerns, making them comfortable and resolving their dental problem is ultimately what it is all about. We want them to leave our office relieved and confident again, with an assurance that they can count on us. We also want them to feel like they are part of our family.” “We offer financing without interest and work with each individual situation. We do comprehensive exams for first time visits so we include not just diagnostics but screenings for other conditions such as oral cancer for example. Dental health is an essential part of one’s overall good health and this type of treatment plan is critical to restore the confidence and beauty of a healthy smile,” adds Dr. Gonzalez. From a complex restoration to a simple annual cleaning, the calming and inviting atmosphere, state of the art technology and competent friendly staff at Dental American Group can help anyone win back that toothy grin.

New Hyundai Veloster is a three-door coupe with sass Ron Beasley LET’S TALK CARS Hyundai recently introduced a nifty new car to the U.S. market called the Veloster; it’s a compact three-door coupe with all the latest technology and it’s targeted at younger consumers. Veloster combines the style of a coupe and the functionality of a hatchback, while incorporating a third conventionally hinged side door on the passenger side for safe, ready egress or access to the rear seat. The rear door handle is cleverly hidden to maintain the coupe design. The sporty, sleek design should have great appeal to high school and college age buyers. Veloster’s unique design was inspired by today’s high-performance sport motorcycles. With distinctive black A-pillars, the car’s window glass has the look of a motorcycle helmet visor. Up front an aggressive form of Hyundai’s signature hexagonal front grille dominates, along with hood scoop detailing and unique LED position lights. Optional
packages add a chrome grille surround, piano black highlights, fog lights and a massive panoramic sunroof. In profile, Veloster has Hyundai’s “Fluidic Sculpture” character lines, muscular wheel arches, body color door handles and mirrors, and wraparound headlights and taillights. Seventeen-inch alloy wheels are standard and two types of 18-inch wheels are available. The rear has a distinctive glass hatch, dual centered chrome exhaust tips and a black lower fascia that complements the front. On the inside, the center stack and controls resemble a sport bike fuel tank and incorporate an available push-button starter. The air vents are inspired by motorcycle tailpipes, while the floor console resembles the seat of a bike. There are numerous interior metallic accents, with alloy pedals and a leatherwrapped steering wheel and shift knob also available. Under the hood, Veloster is powered by an all-new 1.6-liter GDI Gamma engine paired with either Hyundai’s six-speed manual transmission or the company’s first EcoShift dual-clutch transmission. Either way, the combination delivers a fuel-sipping 40 mpg on the highway. The all-new Gamma 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine is the smallest Hyundai engine to use Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI). GDI tech-
Veloster design was inspired by highperformance sport motorcycles, with window glass resembling a motorcycle helmet visor.
nology helps deliver highway fuel economy of 40 mpg, lower emissions and higher reliability. Through the use of GDI, the Gamma 1.6-liter engine delivers a peak output of 138 hp at 6,300 rpm and maximum torque of 123 pounds-feet at 4,850 rpm. The new engine features Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing, an electronic throttle control, a roller timing chain, variable induction and innovative anti-friction coatings such as CrN Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) coating and Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coating. Veloster comes standard with Hyundai’s Blue Link telematics system, a multi-func-
tion seven-inch touch-screen display, Pandora Internet radio capability, Gracenote display technology with voice recognition, video game console connectivity with 115volt power outlet, and Bluetooth hands-free phone system with voice recognition. Pricing for the 2012 Hyundai Veloster starts at $17,300. Ron Beasley is the automotive editor for Miami’s Community Newspapers.
