New Year’s fitness resolutions can transform your body and change your life — but if you are like most Americans, it can also be depressing, frustrating and a total failure. Most people make their New Year Resolutions in December or early January yet very few pledge a real commitment to accomplish them. February is the month that most people give up and revert to pre-New Year Resolution lifestyle, and by Valentine’s Day, they’re back eating unhealthy dinners and chocolates. Have you given up on your fitness goals or never got around to starting them? Then why don’t you show real love for yourself and continue or start a functional fitness program to succeed with your original great resolution goals. As I tell my students “Winners Never Quit and Quitters Never Win!” Can you imagine our world today if Thomas Edison, Henry Ford or the Wright Brothers gave up? Give me all the excuses you want, I’m a single parent, stressed out by the economy’s downfall. I’m not 20 years old anymore and I know Miami is the “Fattest City in America” but if rich, successful, focus-driven people like Oprah failed, what can you expect from me? The truth is: none of those reasons are legitimate excuses. Let me break each one down, beginning with being a single parent. Yes, it’s hard but you are the example of health and fitness to your children. Being fit will give you the energy to go that extra mile for yourself and them, too. Instead of eating and being economically-depressed, now more than ever is the time to start a fitness routine and keep your mind occupied with positive thoughts to relieve stress. You can’t control the national economy but you can transform your body and regain your health to help combat your personal depression.

It’s a fact that as you age, your metabolism slows down, you lose endurance and strength and begin loss of flexibility. Yet, advancing years signal the very time when we need to train harder yet smarter to counter the aging process. From 2007 to thru well into 2008, I went from one injury and illness to another but I never quit working out or gave up. As soon as the doctor gave me his okay, I started training by working around the injuries. Now nearing my 52nd birthday, I’m in better shape then I’ve been in years. Four tips I’ve learned and taught to help my students “stay the course”: 1. Make a Commitment: You must take a stand and make sure that you’re fed up with the way you feel and look. Commit to change it. 2. Make Fitness a Priority: Radically change your eating habits and commit to daily exercise. Health and fitness must become a priority in your life. 3. Make a Lifestyle Change: Condition yourself to change and reinforce it suntil it is conditioned. It usually takes three weeks to create a new habit and change your taste buds. Link pleasure to new choices and pain to reviving old habits. Have no doubts in your mind that you will succeed. Believe in yourself and don’t give up. 4. Think Positive and sur round yourself with Positive People: Stay away from negative people. You are the sum of those around you. Keep negative thoughts out of mind. I teach Kung Fu Kids class through a Zig Zigglers “I CAN” program. Be like the bumblebee that happily buzzes around trhe garden (when, aerodynamically, it’s not supposed to fly at all). Stay away from “garbage dump” thinking. (I stay positive by keeping strong to my faith and listening to Anthony Robbins motivational tapes). There. Now you have no excuses to avoid getting in the best shape of your life!
