hree schools in the City of Doral have received the Florida Department of Education’s most prestigious award for community involvement, the 2008-2009 “Five Star School Award.” Recognized at a School Board meeting September 23 were John I. Smith Elementary, Eugenia B. Thomas Elementary, and Doral Middle School, three of 20 Miami-Dade County schools winning the state honors. The award, created by the Commissioner’s Community Involvement Council, is annually presented to schools demonstrating exemplary community involvement. To earn recognition, schools must document 100% of established achievement criteria in business partnerships, family involvement, volunteerism, student community service, and school advisory councils.

The award, created by the Commissioner’s Community Involvement Council, is annually presented to schools demonstrating exemplary community involvement. Each “Five Star” school complied and submitted portfolios to document how they model excellence through community involvement, earning “Five Star” banners whose display reminds students of the importance of partnering and how it directly affects student achievement. “It was an honor to receive this award for the second time,” noted Gwendolyln C. Hines, Principal of Smith Elementary. “We’re look ing forward to receiving it again for the 2009-2010 school year.”

Adoption of 3,300 trees will grace the homes of Doral and nearby residents, thanks to a successful “Adopt-A-Tree” event hosted by Miami-Dade County Department of Environmental Management (DERM) and the City of Doral at J.C. Bermudez Park. Hundreds of homeowners interested in beautifying and contributing to the health of the environment took advantage of securing up to two free non-citrus trees to plant in their homes while offered instructions on planting and care. Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez has made the beautification of Doral one of his top priorities, resulting in Doral’s

recognition as “Tree City USA” in 2008 and a fitting home for DERM’s Adopt-ATree event in 2009. “We are very pleased with the outcome of the event. We know that the residents of Doral care about their city and about the environment,” Mayor Bermudez said. “The great turnout for this event plus the feedback I received from people who attended proves our love for our city and the value of taking steps to preserve its beauty.” For more information, contact Christina Baguer, Public Information Officer for the City of Doral at christina.baguer@cityofdoral.com.

How do you leave Hialeah? Ask Jennine Capo Crucet, born at Hialeah Hospital to Cuban parents who eventually moved to the Palm Springs North area after the birth of her sister. Now, her debut book, How to Leave Hialeah, has won Crucet the prestigious Iowa Short Fiction Award, making her the first Hispanic to win the prize in its 40-year history. Raised in a predominantly workingclass neighborhoods, the voices of this “steamy section of Miami shout out to us from rowdy all-night funerals and kitchens full of platanos and croquettes and lechon ribs, from domino tables and cigar factories, glitter-purple Buicks, private homes of santeras and fights on front lawns, crowded expressways and canals,” describes Book News of the University of Iowa Press. “What a joy it is to read the work of a writer who has a powerful voice, a sense of humor, and a feeling for local histories,” comments author/critic Charles Baxter. “Jennine Capó Crucet’s stories start with Cuban American neighborhoods and cultures and then sail off into the direction of the great themes: love, familial bonds, aging, and death. And resurrection. This is a wonderful collection.” Miami Herald critic Ariel Gonzalez concludes that Crucet is “a fresh voice in American fiction... she will bear watching.” Born to Cuban exile parents and raised in Miami, her writing has appeared in Ploughshares, the Southern Review, the Northwest Review, and other magazines. She is the recipient of a Bread Loaf Scholarship and has been a finalist for the Missouri Review Editors’ Prize and the University of California, Irvine, Chicano/Latino Literary Prize. A self-described fan of the MiamiDade Public Library System and the baseball Marlins, Crucet attended Hialeah’s Palm Springs North Elementary School (until 1992) and graduated from American High School (Class of ‘99) before leaving Miami’s third biggest city to graduate from Cornell University. After completing a graduate degree in creative writing, she married in her hometown in 2006. The Crucet family still lives in Palm Springs North and Jennine still consid-

ers Miami her home even though she recently moved to Los Angeles to continue a writing career with her husband and their adopted pit bull. Crucet’s striking debut collection may do for Miami what Edward P. Jones does for Washington, D.C., and what James Joyce did for Dublin, observes Book News, “expand(ing) our ideas and our expectations of the city by exposing its tough but vulnerable underbelly.” Crucet’s writing is shaped by the people and landscapes of South Florida and by the stories of Cuba told by her parents and abuelos. Her own stories are informed by her experiences as a Cuban American woman living within and without her community, ready to leave and ready to return, “ready to mourn everything.” “This is definitely a young writer to watch for, sassy, smart, with an unerring ear for a community’s voices, its losses, its over-the-top telenovela extravagances, and its poignant struggles to understand itself in a new land. I was glad not to have to leave Hialeah right away, but to stay long enough to hear its many stories as told by a gifted writer like Jennine Capó Crucet” concludes Julia Alvarez, author of How the García Girls Lost Their Accents, In the Time of the Butterflies, and Return to Sender How to Leave Hialeah, published on September 1, is available for sale at bookstores or directly from the University of Iowa Press by phone at 800-621-2736 or online at <www.uiowapress.org>.

Cheery classroom awaits youngsters up to six at Montessori –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Now beginning its fifth year, the Petersen Montessori Academy of Doral provides a collection of learner-led strategies to build independent thinkers and motiviated learners, according to its founder, Melanie Peterson Jacocks, M. S. Planning future expansion into elementary educational levels, the Academy currently enrolls children in ages from six months through six years, located in Suite 150 at 10395 NW 41st Street. The first and only Montessori School in Doral, Ms. Petersen Jacocks stresses a focus on the ‘whole child,’ noting that “while traditional programs are more concerned about abilities and achievement, Montessori programs focus on the child’s development in four areas: cognitive, psychological, social, and spiritual. “To best serve your child in these development areas, Montessori groups children in age brackets of three years,” she explained. “This is a more natural way of learning and allows stronger relationships to form between teachers, parents and children.” The Montessori method includes learner-led strategies to build independent thinking and motivated learning that is student-driven while fostering teamwork and leadership skills, she said. Classes help children to learn grace, courtesy and conflict resolution, valuing the depth of each child’s experiences and providing uninterrupted workshop time, assessed internally and through observation.

Melanie Petersen Jacocks trained under Beverly McGhee of Alexander Montessori School in 2000 and has since earned her Early Childhood Credential from the American Montessori Society, her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Master of Science in Montessori Elementary, both from BarryUniversity. • Fitness & Defense • Anta’s Martial Arts, Hollywood Video join for a safe Hallowe’en

Julio G. Anta GET FIT WITH ANTA Hollywood video manager Steven Almodovar and I have a common concern. We have a burden to help keep all kids in Doral safe this Hallowe’en, so we’ve joined forces to sponsor a Hallowe’en party and safety workshop. As a child, Hallowe’en was my favorite holiday (after Christmas). Yet as an adult, safety and self defense instructor, as well as a former law enforcement officer, Hallowe’en has become my most feared holiday of the year. And it has become the most dangerous day of the year for children. We will have a free community service Hallowe’en Party on Wednesday, October 28, with a costume contest, treats, and martial arts demonstrations to help your child learn how to stay safe this Hallowe’en — before Halloween night, so all kids can learn how to stay safe that evening. For more information on a safe and fun-filled Hallowe’en Party, call me at 305-599-3649. Meanwhile, here are some Hallowe’en safety tips. • Never ‘trick or treat’ alone, and do it while it’s still light • Wear a costume making it easy for you to walk • Carry a flashlight, and use retroreflective tape on your costume • Walk with the road to your right (if

there’s no sidewalk) • Only go out with a parent, big brother or sister, or a group of children • Never go inside a strange house to receive candy • Use face makeup instead of mask to retain vision. • If you must wear a mask, take it off before crossing the street • Cross only at street corners, not between parked cars. • Get home before sorting, checking and enjoying your treats. Both Steven and I want you to have a safe Hallowe’en! We look forward to see ing you at Hollywood Video and Anta’s Hallowe’en Party.
