2011...A new Beginning! FROM THE DBC EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S DESK PETE DE LA TORRE
J
anuary 1st is known as the great equalizer. We all have the same opportunities for success. You can accomplish feats never reached before. Your responsibility is to set realistic goals and develop the actions plans necessary to implement immediately. Make sure to share your goals and objectives with a trusted friend, advisor, mentor, etc. and ask them to hold you accountable for the implementation and follow-up you will need. Here’s a thought; Why not shorten your year to 3 months as oppose to 12 months. Create a sense of urgency in your day to day, hour to hour activities. What you’ll find is that you won’t have any time to waste. Once you’ve accomplished the goal, make sure to reward yourself. Along the way, it’s also important that you acknowledge the small victories achieved on the path to the bigger prize. This will keep you motivated. Make sure to remember that 2011, can be a new beginning! Happy New Year!

etting in front of your clients doesn’t have to be expensive. You can create distinctive, economical, interesting concepts that catch your target audience’s eye, will get your business noticed, and impact your bottom line. How do you do this? By creating public relations tactics that highlight your brand, products or services through a unique campaign, such as giving away products, using digital technology, social media, and the Internet to engage potential clients. Here are 10 ways to get you started from Jay Conrad Levinson, accomplished author and brand design expert responsible for helping create brand icons like the Marlboro Man, Tony the Tiger and the Jolly Green Giant. Business cards in books. Find a book at bookstores around your community that relates to your industry or business. Then, insert your business card in each copy. Demo your services. If you’ve got a product or service to sell, offer free demonstrations in stores, libraries, malls or other public places. Be sure to videotape your demonstrations and share them online. Write a free e-book. These days, consumers love anything that’s free, including expert advice. Create a free e-book related to your industry and use it to get the word out about what you do. This will help position you as an expert, giving you credibility. E-mail the book to current clients and potential ones. Distribute the book online, through social media and bookmarking sites. Use human billboards. Hire students and enlist volunteers to stand outside your business strapped with a billboard on their backs. Make

a video and share it online. It’s a great way to get attention and generate buzz. Get an 800-number. Consumers will gravitate toward a business with a catchy 800phone number. Go with the controversy. Pick a hotly debated topic in your industry, pick a side and make it known where you and your business stand. Issue a press release that lets the media know about your position on the issue and reach out to bloggers who are writing about it. Generate some ink. Pay customers to get a temporary tattoo of your brand on a particular body part. For example, if you sell shoes, offer ankle tattoos and if consumers do it, offer a coupon for 30 percent off their next purchase. Alert the media to what you’re doing and you’ll be sure to generate some ink

for employing this technique. Help the needy. Nothing attracts attention like free stuff! Offer free samples of your product or service to a disadvantaged population and let the world know you’re doing it. For example, if you own a hair salon, offer homeless men and women or pregnant teen mothers free haircuts for a day. Feed your clients. Everyone loves a delicious, free meal. Partner with a local eatery and send free food to your clients. Pitch in person. While e-mail, viral videos, and social networks are good online tools, many companies are implementing offline techniques, like face-to-face meetings, to drum up business. Face time with clients is important and if you’re not doing it, you’re making a huge mistake. If you’re targeting a potential new client, grab your laptop and go to their offices to make your pitch in person!

Archbishop Thomas Wenski visits Doral Parish
Archbishop Thomas G. Wenski celebrates holiday mass on December 11. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
On December 11, Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish celebrated the Vigil of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, honored by the presence of His Excellency Thomas G. Wenski, Archbishop of Miami. Parishioners recounted the event as the most beautiful “Vigil of our Lady of Guadalupe” that they had seen to date. In addition, it was the Archbishop’s first visit to the parish as Archbishop of Miami. In the Archbishop’s homily, he reminded the faithful that they must allow Our Lady of Guadalupe to guide them as they overcome all obstacles of secularism, distractions that pull us away from the Lord. He continued by stating that just as St. John the Baptist announced “Prepare the way for the Lord” we prepare the way when we say ‘yes’ to God in Nazareth. From Tepeyac, Our Lady of Guadalupe continues to teach us to say ‘yes’ to the Lord.
At the end of the mass, the Archbishop exhorted parishioners to continue to work hard to find a more permanent worship space, adding in closing remarks: “We are all bearers of good news, like Guadalupe, so that the world we live can come to know the ‘God of Great Truth, One for Whom we live, of the Creator of People…the Lord of Heaven and Earth’.” The Parish has been abundantly blessed by the Archbishop’s support. With the arrival of a new priest, Father Israel Mago, the parish now has a Parish Center located above the Navarro retail store on NW 114 Avenue and 41 Street where the choir and various other ministries can meet and call home. Father Israel and the parish invite all to join for mass at Doral Academy High School, 11100 NW 27th Street. For times and information, tel. 305593-6123.

Can a security supervisor/muscle car refurbishing junkie/ workaholic/cheerleader find a satisfying career as a General Manager in the hotel corporate world of Marriott? If you suddenly left your home and all of your cherished friends and toys behind when you were thrown into the chaotic days of the Mariel Boat Lift from Matanzas, Cuba you might want to find a safe haven where you could hide for awhile. Not Raul Pino – who at the age of five arrived in the United States with his father and four additional siblings. Mom was left behind and did not join the family for four verrrryyyy long months. Raul’s siblings ages 14, 12, 10 and 9 helped Dad with baby Raul, 5, but everyone had to work! They lived in a converted one car garage with Dad finding work in a factory then as a construction worker. Raul was working with floral arrangements on weekends by the time he was 12 – riding buses alone to a floral shop on 8th street. He attended the local schools - Shenandoah Elementary, Citrus Grove Middle and Miami
A multi-faceted gentleman, Raul Pino High School. While attending Miami High he had the privilege of being selected as one of five Miami High male cheerleaders – a coveted position guaranteeing popularity with the girls. He earned an AA degree in Architectural Engineering from Miami Dade’s Wolfson Campus while working full time. He lost interest in architecture by the time he entered FIU and elected to pursue management courses. He began his long and illustrious career with Marriott Corporation in the 80’s at the Biscayne Bay Marriott as the loss prevention officer on the midnight shift @ $5.25 per hour. He was soon promoted to Dir. of Security and was Employee of the Year in 1988 eventually being promoted to Regional Area Director of Security. He trained as the Manager in Training at the Harbor Beach Marriott in Ft. Lauderdale before being relocated to Orlando handling security for Marriott Hotels in Florida and their Time Share Division in the entire United States. Twenty-one years later of 50-hour work weeks, he has the honor of having worked for Marriott his entire adult life without having been transferred out of the S Florida area– an anomaly in the Marriott Corp. world. Raul is currently the General Manager for the Marriott Vacation Club Villas at Doral. This 141 unit, 2/2 time-share villas can also be rented on a one day or one week interval. 50% of the inventory is utilized as a hotel. Services include the use of the Spa, Golf Courses, Restaurants and pool area of the Doral Resort and Spa. A van is available to drive you from the Villas to the Resort and all charges can be charged back to your room at the Villas – including Marriott Reward Points. Raul married while working in Orlando and they had a son Raul, Jr. , who is currently 16 and attends Braddock Sr. High playing as a defensive end on the football team. Raul
moved back to Miami where his marriage ended but he remained as the custodial parent for Raul, Jr. After his return to Miami, Raul met Daiqueline an elementary school teacher. As he states, “I prayed for the woman of my dreams and after meeting her I proposed within 4 months”. One year later they were married on December 27, 2004. To round out the Pino family, Daiqueline and Raul soon added to their family with the birth of Daniel (now 4 years old) and Rebecca Joy who celebrated her 2nd birthday on December 26th. Raul Pino believes in the networking relationship and even though he does not personally “sell” his philosophy has always been to actively participate in the local networking organization. He joined the DBC in 2006 when recruited by Carlos Ruiz. He is the immediate Past Chair of the Ambassador committee and will soon spearhead the Hospitality Committee with Maria Prado highlighting the City of Doral and surrounding area as a key destination point. Raul was recently honored as a nominee for the 2010 Noche de Honor award presented by TACA Airlines. Four leaders were recognized for their dedication to the South Florida community during the kick-off reception at the sixth annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration at Miami International Mall. The family love to travel, however, what really turns Raul on is refurbishing muscle cars. He has refurbished: two ’68 corvette convertibles along with one ’73 and one ’85 corvette; a ’69 Camaro; two ’72 El Caminos; one ’85 Grand Prix; and one ’69 Chevelle. His refurbished ’69 candy-apple red El Camino sold for $4K. A multi-faceted gentleman – Raul Pino!

JetStream services over 250 member companies in Miami Dade County as well as Puerto Rico. JetStream has stepped out of the box by personally scheduling visits to local corporations offering their services as an
What is a credit union: Credit Unions, like banks, are financial institutions providing many services to their depositors. Credit Unions emphasize consumer deposits and loan services. Banks emphasize business accounts and trust services. The key philosophy behind credit unions - they are community-based institutions that operate as non-profits. Member driven, credit unions encourage people to save and promote thrift allowing its members to use money wisely. Their Board of Directors is comprised of volunteer or elected members who participate in major financial decisions and elections. When you bank at your local credit union, members of the credit union own the institution and if you’re a member, the institution is owned, in part, by you.
Therefore, a credit union issued credit card is in essence, working for you. Credit Unions usually finance small community development projects and try to keep money within the community. When doing business with a credit union their profits are returned to their members in the form of lower loan interest rates and higher dividends. Because credit unions tend to be smaller and cater to a select group of people, there is more personalization between the staff and the members. While selecting a credit union isn’t for everyone, it’s definitely something you should consider. See what service and opportunities JetStream Credit Union can offer you, your company, and your employees. How To Feel Comfortable About Your Investment Decisions By Rick Tonkinson
Certified Financial Planner CFP®
After 18 years of being a money manager, I have consistently heard how many people do not feel comfortable with their investment decisions. Have you ever second-guessed the investment decisions you have made? Do words like foolish, dumb, wrong, confused, guess, uncertain, frustrated, and overwhelmed describe your feelings? You are not alone in feeling uncomfortable about decisions you have made. Would you like to feel better about your investment decisions? If the answer is yes, then here are some basic steps to consider: Determine if You are a Saver or an Investor If you need guaranteed stability, then you are a saver. When the stock market is positive, many people say that they want to invest and that they are an “investor.” They say that they can tolerate the volatility of the stock market and that their investment time horizon is long term (greater than 10 years). Then 2008 comes along and the stock market (S&P 500) drops 34% and the “investors” now are running for safety as “savers”. Their long-term time horizon has decreased from 10 years to 10 minutes and the risk tolerance has decreased from moderate to minimal. You need to be honest with yourself as to what degree you are a saver or an investor. This is a personal decision that in a perfect world should not be influenced by your family, friends or coworkers. There are investments for savers and investments for investors. Before you select from the thousand of choices, decide what will make you sleep at
night. Don’t rely on a sales rep to tell you what your investment profile is because the sales rep may adjust your profile to fit the suitability of the investment they are trying to sell you.
Focus on the Purpose of Your Investment Do you need to put money away for a rainy day? Make a “To Do List” of items that you want the money to attain such as vacation, education or wedding. Give each item a specific cost such as $5,000 for a vacation. Determine which item motivates you to attain it. Motivation that is ratcheted up is called passion. If you find a passion for an item, that will be your top priority. How quickly you want to attain the item will help determine what investment to consider. Again decide on the specific purpose of the money and then consider your options. Be Realistic with what You have to Invest As an “investor,” you need to accept that you are prepared to lose part or all of your investment. If this risk is not comfortable for you, then you are a saver. There are times when people have borrowed on the equity of their home and invest in the stock market because the potential gains offset the risk of losing their home. People make reckless decisions so that they can attain the item they want quicker than what is realistic. Plan so that if it takes a year to attain an item, you give yourself two years to attain it. If you attain the item in one year, that’s good but don’t beat yourself up if you don’t make your deadline. The important thing is to keep working toward what you want. • Fitness & Defense • Resolve to Keep Resolutions in ‘11 Julio G. Anta GET FIT WITH ANTA Forget the Resolutions this year and finally get results. It’s that time of year again when most Americans start to make (or live up to) a list of “resolutions” for the New Year. I’m sure that you know the top resolution of each year. Most Americans (our readers among them) seek a better quality of life by adopting a healthier lifestyle and losing weight. Yet, 68% of Americans continue to be overweight, with 33.8% classified as obese. Why is it we keep making the same resolution, year after year, yet see no results? It’s because resolutions only require words. Results only happen through action and a lifestyle change. My wish for my students this year is to train hard, be the best that they can be and never give up on their goals and dreams. At our martial arts and fitness center classes, we chant “Quitting is a is a Four- Letter Word” and “Winners Never Quit and Quitters Never Win!” We teach children to set goals, not to give up until achieved, so that as adults, they will not start yo-yo dieting, only to fail in their quest to live fit. Now, after the holidays, is the best time to change your lifestyle and finally succeed in your health and fitness goals.
Research shows that 85% of those who gain weight during the holiday season will not lose it. That means if you gain five pounds every year for the holidays in five years, you will have gained 25 pounds. (And most will gain more than five!). Obesity is a national epidemic. At Anta’s Fitness and Self Defense our goal for the last 12-plus years has been to stop the obesity epidemic through our fitness programs. To succeed this year, and change your lifestyle, you must make a commitment and be accountable. How do you do this? Write it on a piece of paper, put it up on your refrigerator or give it to a friend or family member. Stay away from negative people who tell you that you will fail, encourage junk food treating or missing workout or fitness class. Find a fun fitness workout that you will enjoy. You can also enter our “Doral Fitness Challenge,” free for all Pilates, Muay Thai Kickboxing, Piloxing and Xtreme Functional Fitness class members. In an effort to celebrate National Healthy Weight Week on January 16-22, we’re also offering a free week of training at my studio: Anta’s Fitness and Self Defense. In 2010, we were blessed with the most successful year since starting our martial arts and fitness classes in Doral in 1998. We are pumped up for an even more successful 2011 and we are wish you the most successful year ever in 2010. Julio Anta, owner of Anta’s Fitness and Self Defense in Doral since 1998, can be reached. at 305 599-3649, via the internet at DoralFitnessChallenge.com and fitdef@aol.com.

A Miami author is offering up fresh, money-making resolution ideas for the new year, especially designed for women. While many are struggling with the current economy, Pamela Haack, author of Unlimited Layers: A Recipe for Turning Passions into Profits, is teaching women how to make resolutions that will turn a profit in 2011. “Typical diet resolutions are fine, but money-making resolutions can be lifechanging, particularly in the current economic crisis, said Haack. “In fact, women entrepreneurs will play a substantial role in creating a new economy. Projections from numerous organizations support her claim. According to the National Association of Women Business Owners, womenowned businesses are hiring and investing in spite of uncertain economic times and
current data projections from organizations, such as The Guardian Life Small Business Research Institute, project that future job growth will be created primarily by women-owned businesses. Haack suggests that women make a resolution to create a new income stream in 2011, and she shows them how. “Many people can turn an idea into a moneymaker but they don’t know where to begin, Haack noted. Since many women may lack start-up capital to build a small business, she teaches no-cost or low-cost avenues to create a new stream of income. “Women are often amazed when they learn that they have the ability turn an idea into income, explained Haack, a Doral Colony resident for the past four years. “Deciding to do exactly that in 2011 is one powerful resolution. Author Haack provides money-making tips, entrepreneurial ideas and training seminars for women at www.unlimitedlayers.com and can be reached by Email at pamela@pamelahaack.com.

Miami Dade College (MDC) and International Solidarity for Human Rights (ISHR), along with Miami city officials and dignitaries, unveiled a 16-foot creation of Uruguayan artist Mauro Arbiza, on December 10. The sculpture entitled “Elevacion’ is inspired by Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: “Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression” at MDC InterAmerican
Campus in Little Havana. The event also marked the start of the Route to Human Rights, a multi-media project spearheaded by ISHR that will place art created by local and international artists at 30 locations throughout Florida. Each of the pieces will represent a different article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights with “ the Route” beginning and ending at MDC.

Incorporation in 2003 Establishes New City The following material is based on an article From the Everglades to Industrial Center to Hometown originally written by Cindy Rodriguez Prereira and can be viewed on the City of Doral web site. – Editor’s Note. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Incorporation of the City of Doral began in 1996 with the first election of a Community Council representing the stillunincorporated area. Soon-to-be County Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Cancio, Sr., Mario Pita and Barbara B. Thomas were elected to Council seats while three other members were appointed. The Council began meeting monthly to work on different projects and address community needs. In 2002, the Governor appointed Cancio to fill a vacated Commission seat. Doral residents hoped his appointment would be the impetus to bring the community closer to incorporation, and Cancio did not let his community down. Cancio first named Juan Carlos Bermudez as his replacement to the Community Council but after initially declining that offer, he ran for the seat and was elected. At the time, Bermudez was president of One Doral, a civic organization formed to counteract the perceived influence of the West Dade Federation on the Council. The Miami Herald reported that Bermudez intended to create a transparent government in Doral by bringing a balance to the table. One Doral and the West Dade Federation were instrumental in the incorporation process. In January 2003, following a seven year battle, 85% of the voters in Doral voted in favor of incorporation. At long last, they had their own new city with a local government and more service for their tax dollars. In June of the same year, 92% voted to accept the City Charter and elected their first Mayor and City Council to include Mayor Bermudez, Vice Mayor Pete Cabrera, and Council Members Mike DiPietro, Sandra Ruiz, and Robert Van Name. In August, the City Council took their oath of office. Through its new charter, the city operates under a Mayor-Council-Manager form of government with policy making and leg-
HISTORY OF DORAL islative authority vested in a governing council, consisting of the mayor and four other council members. The Council, which is elected at large, is responsible among other things, for passing ordinances and resolutions, adopting the annual budget, appointing the City Manager, City Clerk and City Attorney. The City Manager is responsible for carrying out the policies and ordinances of the Council, for overseeing the daily operations of the government, and for appointing the heads of various departments. The city offers a wide range of services through its departments including the Office of the City Manager, Office of the City Clerk, Finance Department, Community Development Department, Public Works Department, Parks and Recreation Department, and Police Department. In 2002, the KSL Hotel Corporation, the company now operating Doral Golf Resort & Spa, filed a lawsuit against Hotel Intercontinental for using Doral in its name. They also wanted the new City to pay $1,000 a month for 22 years for use of the name Doral. The elected officials went to bat and the Resort agreed not to charge for the name usage. The Hotel also reached an agreement and changed its name to Intercontinental at Doral Miami. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 20,438 but a 2009 U.S. Census estimate placed the city population at 46,000, making it one of the fastest growing cities in Miami-Dade County. For a city of its size, Doral has a large number of shops, financial institutions and businesses, especially importers and exporters, primarily because of its proximity to the Miami International Airport. In 2008, Fortune Small Business and CNN Money ranked Doral as 51 on a list of 100 cities with the best mix of business advantages and lifestyle appeal. The City of Doral has come a very long way in just 15 years and now attracts positive attention from Fortune 100 corporations, mom-and-pop businesses, young families and retirees alike.

Pet Supermarket, a family-owned pet superstore headquartered in Broward County, has become the Premier Partner of MiamiDade Park and Recreation Dog Parks. The sponsorship agreement includes all County dog parks and Pet Supermarket stores located within the Miami-Dade County line. Resources from both organizations will be leveraged to provide dog and park patrons an enhanced Dog Park experience with promotions and exciting special events. Pet Supermarket hosted a pet fair December 4 during the Grand Opening of Haulover Park’s new Dog Park, located at 10800 Collins Avenue in Miami Beach, giving away $50 gift card each hour and free gifts, dog treats, and raffled a gift basket of pet supplies. “Pet Supermarket is very proud and excited to join in this partnership,” said Steve Feinberg, Vice-President of Merchandise and Marketing for Pet Supermarket. “We strongly believe it is important for families to have secure and safe places to visit with their pets, and that a healthy lifestyle adds to the wellbeing and quality of life for both pets and their owners. “We intend to provide some entertaining events this year and we hope the entire
Miami-Dade community joins in the fun,” added Feinberg. “This is a perfect example of how Miami Dade Parks has engaged our local businesses in public/private partnerships that make a difference in our community,” said Jack Kardys, Director of Miami-Dade Park and Recreation Department. “Pet Supermarket’s desire to be a good corporate citizen and sponsor our dog parks will be a tremendous win for the pet owners in our community—the benefits of having a family-owned organization that loves animals and provides for their every need will provide great opportunities for those who use our parks,” he said. Miami-Dade Parks provides various sponsorship and partnership opportunities for corporations and individuals through MiamiDade Park’s Adopt-a-Park program. For information, tel. Donna Peyton at 305-7557804. Pet Supermarket is headquartered in Sunrise with each of more than 100 stores offers more than 8,000 pet products, including those online, Miami-Dade Parks is the third largest county park system in the United States, consisting of 263 parks and covering more than 12,848 acres.
