Raise Your Hands to Stop Diabetes BY CLAUDIA DIAZ-GONZALEZ

Manager, Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes-South Florida, Key Markets East American Diabetes Association

November is Diabetes Awareness Month. With nearly 26 million children and adults in America living with diabetes, and another 79 million at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes, the disease is taking a devastating physical, emotional and financial toll on our country. Yet, most Americans don’t consider diabetes a serious matter. They feel it is someone else’s responsibility; someone else’s problem. Recent numbers by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention paint a desperate situation of where we are at, and where we are headed: • Every 17 seconds, someone is diagnosed with diabetes. • Diabetes kills more people each year than breast cancer and AIDS combined. • Recent estimates project that as many as 1 in 3 American adults will have diabetes in 2050 unless we take steps to Stop Diabetes. Now is the time to act. Become Involved in American Diabetes Month® 2011 November is American Diabetes Month, a time to rally individuals, communities and families to Join the MillionsSM in the movement to Stop Diabetes®. This year, the American Diabetes Association is asking individuals to take a pledge and raise their hand to Stop Diabetes. –––––See

Dimensional Leadership BY DANA FERNETY

Doral Business Council Executive Director Sometimes I’m asked about my leadership philosophy. I’ve read very good books about management and leadership by Jim Collins and Malcolm Gladwell. I’ve read biographies of great leaders including Winston Churchill and Abraham Lincoln. I’ve been mentored by what I consider to be great leaders as well. I try to incorporate elements of their leadership styles in my approach to leadership at the Doral Business Council. But, one of the most important lessons I learned about leadership came from a museum tour. In 2009, I was fortunate enough to tour the Louvre Museum in Paris. The Louvre, built as a palace, holds much of the world’s best known paintings, sculptures, and artifacts – all well documented in thousands of art and history books. But, I discovered something special in that historic palace – the ceiling! The murals and carvings on the ceilings are a treasure that many overlook. They are not discussed in the audio guides nor listed in the catalogs; yet there they are. They are as spectacular as much that hangs on the walls. I venture to guess that this art is overlooked by over 70% of Louvre visitors simply because they fail to look up! There is a valuable lesson here for leaders. Management isn’t simply about what you’ve done (what is behind you) or what you plan to do (what is ahead of you). It is also about what is around you right now (up, down, left, and right). How deep is your research into the challenges facing your organization? Once you’ve defined the issue you must get to know it from all sides. How do –––––––––––— See

Member Profile

In the Beginning

Often you hear about the first…DBC breakfast, After Hours, Chairperson, but what happened afterwards? Surely everyone has driven by the triangular building on the corner of 41st Street and 97th Avenue and has seen that The Corradino Group’s office is housed in this unique building. What you probably don’t know is that the Corradino Group is a pillar trustee of the Doral Business Council (DBC), a pioneer and believer of the organization when it was being formed. Joe Corradino was one of the original board members and the second Chairperson of the DBC. A resident and current Vice-Mayor of the Village of Pine Crest, Joe has always kept close ties with Doral and the reason why he felt it was right to get involved with the DBC. Joe believes that by volunteering in the community in any capacity, one can improve its overall quality of life. Much of his time, from his youth until today, has been in community service. Since his arrival to South Florida in 1996, Joe has

Joe Corradino Partner The Corradine Group

been involved with several organizations, staying true to his philosophy about community involvement. However, Joe is known for his

professional success. A professional Urban Planner, Joe is a partner in The Corradino Group, a family-owned planning and engineering firm established by his father in 1970. Joe has first-hand experience with what it takes to make a successful community. His specialty has been working with South Florida municipalities in growth management, traffic impact analysis, transportation master plans, transit planning, concurrency management and comprehensive planning. Joe has won nearly a dozen awards for his work in the past several years. Today, the DBC can proudly say that the Corradino Group has been a member for 7 years. And although he’s extremely busy at work and his role as an elected official keeps his schedule packed, Joe still plays an active role as a supporter and advisor of the DBC. The next time you drive by the Corradino Group’s building, you’ll know a little more about who works in this iconic building in Doral.

Head Restraints or Head Rests? It is not a head rest... The head restraint in a vehicle does not help you rest your head, as a matter of fact it helps you not to break your neck in case of a collision. It is always attached to the top of the car seat. They are only good and effective when properly positioned. Where should they be? It is the head restraint that will reduce neck injuries in case of a collision, and so it is important to have your head aligned with the headrest, but not the neck alone, as this would be extremely dangerous in case of collision. Most cars have manually-adjustable head restraints, but they all have to be 27.5 inches above the seat reference point by law. How do you adjust them? But how should these restraints be adjusted? According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, to be effective, the top of the restraint should lie somewhere between the top of your ears and the top of your head. If the restraint articulates for horizontal adjustment, it should be placed so that it’s as close to your head as possible, without pushing your head forward or causing the height of the restraint to drop. The position of your seatback is also important - less is better when it comes to reclining. A more upright seatback means that the head restraint will likely be in a safer position - one that’s closer to your head. “Let our Family Help you and your Family.”

Miami Christian School students gather to pray and shine in fall sports MIAMI CHRISTIAN

UPDATE BY GLORIA BURNS

Students and staff at Miami Christian School once again participated in the See You at the Pole event, an annual gathering of Christian students of all ages at a flagpole in front of their local school for prayer during the early morning before school starts. The American SYATP events occur on every fourth Wednesday of September. This annual gathering begun in 1990, and has since grown by word of mouth, announcements at youth rallies and churches, and the internet. In fact, See You at the Pole meetings now occur internationally. Fall sports are always competitive and great fun for the student athletes at Miami Christian School and volleyball has become a favorite for the girls. In fact, the MCS Varsity Girls’ volleyball team just completed an undefeated season and lost only a single set the entire season. The junior varsity and middle school volleyball teams had a good run this season as well. In other sports, the bowling team came in 5th in the Tamiami Youth Fair Tournament during which MCS freshman, Alexander Yaniz was the top scorer. Yaniz was subsequently named The Miami Herald Athlete of the Week as a result of his great performance during that tournament. To round out the Falls Sports competitions, the Football team is experiencing a winning season, and the Cross Country team looks to conclude its season as well. Teen Valley Trip in October is always something students enjoy and this year was no exception. This high school wide trip to

Teen Valley Ranch in North Carolina gave the young people an opportunity to experience cooler weather and great activities such as hiking, horseback riding, hayrides, bonfires, games and athletic activities at the campgrounds. Of course, daily chapel services and delicious camp food also enhanced their time in the mountains. MCS is always looking for creative ways to educate and entertain and bringing in community leaders to discuss their professions serves that dual purpose. After a week visits from various community leaders from policemen and nurses to firemen and others, students finished off the week by dressing up in the attire of their desired future occupation. Nova Southeastern University’s Fischler School of Education and Human Services and its Hispanic Advisory Board present the Cervantes O u t s t a n d i n g Educator Awards each year as part of the Hispanic Heritage Festival. Ortet was honored during a gala reception, October 20, at High School students on Grandfather Mountain on Teen Trip in October: Left the Miami Airport to right: Kevin Iszler, D J Penate, Michael Santiago, Sarah Betancourt, Hilton. Ortet has Victoria Garcia, Lizette Vinas, and Brian Berkley

How To Feel Comfortable About Your Investment Decisions By Rick Tonkinson

CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM

After 18 years of being a money manager, I have consistently heard how many people do not feel comfortable with their investment decisions. Have you ever second-guessed the investment decisions you have made? Do words like foolish, dumb, wrong, confused, guess, uncertain, frustrated, and overwhelmed describe your feelings? You are not alone in feeling uncomfortable about decisions you have made. Would you like to feel better about your investment decisions? If the answer is yes, then here are some basic steps to consider: Determine if You are a Saver or an Investor If you need guaranteed stability, then you are a saver. When the stock market is positive, many people say that they want to invest and that they are an “investor.” They say that they can tolerate the volatility of the stock market and that their investment time horizon is long term (greater than 10 years). Then 2008 comes along and the stock market (S&P 500) drops 34% and the “investors” now are running for safety as “savers”. Their long-term time horizon has decreased from 10 years to 10 minutes and the risk tolerance has decreased from moderate to minimal. You need to be honest with yourself as to what degree you are a saver or an investor. This is a personal decision that in a perfect world should not be influenced by your family, friends or coworkers.

There are investments for savers and investments for investors. Before you select from the thousand of choices, decide what will make you sleep at night. Don’t rely on a sales rep to tell you what your investment profile is because the sales rep may adjust your profile to fit the suitability of the investment they are trying to sell you.

Focus on the Purpose of Your Investment Do you need to put money away for a rainy day? Make a “To Do List” of items that you want the money to attain such as vacation, education or wedding. Give each item a specific cost such as $5,000 for a vacation. Determine which item motivates you to attain it. Motivation that is ratcheted up is called passion. If you find a passion for an item, that will be your top priority. How quickly you want to attain the item will help determine what investment to consider. Again decide on the specific purpose of the money and then consider your options. Be Realistic with what You have to Invest As an “investor,” you need to accept that you are prepared to lose part or all of your investment. If this risk is not comfortable for you, then you are a saver. There are times when people have borrowed on the equity of their home and invest in the stock market because the potential gains offset the risk of losing their home. People make reckless decisions so that they can attain the item they want quicker than what is realistic. Plan so that if it takes a year to attain an item, you give yourself two years to attain it. If you attain the item in one year, that’s good but don’t beat yourself up if you don’t make your deadline. The important thing is to keep working toward what you want.
