DBC 5th Annual International Achievement Awards Breakfast his year’s International Achievement Awards Breakfast recognized two leaders impacting the Doral community, Honorable Rick Scott, Governor of Florida, and Florida East Coast Railway. Accepting the International Achievement Award on behalf of Governor Scott, was Manuel A. Mencia, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of International Trade and Business Development for Enterprise Florida, Inc. Thousands across Miami struggle to manage work schedules, parenting responsibilities, and personal lives while also caring for their aging parents. For many, it can seem overwhelming, and the consequence of not striking a good balance can be devastating. According to the National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP, 11 percent of the more than 20 million working Americans who care for aging parents or relatives will take a leave of absence and 10 percent will leave their jobs. Along with missed career opportunities, these caregivers will suffer set backs to wages and retirement income. In addition to financial hardships, working caregivers can experience a full range of health issues. A 2011 study on baby boomers caring for parents from MetLife found that these individuals are more likely to have fair or poor health than those who do not provide care to their parents. Earlier studies have also shown that stress, incidence of heart disease, and depression are all negatively associated with family caregiving. Working caregivers often feel it is all up to them to figure out how to man-

The Mayor’s Message Another Banner Year For Our City BY JUAN CARLOS BERMUDEZ Mayor, City of Doral
AAs we head into December and the holidays and get ready for a new year, I hope this time finds you and you loved ones in good health. This year has been another banner year for our City of Doral. We not only balanced the budget but have very healthy reserves. We move into the new year with exciting projects including our new dog-friendly park, set to come on line in April 2012, the new City Hall/Municipal Center, as well as its adjacent passive park, the first park in our new downtown overlay area. The City was once again named a “Tree City USA” and in 2011 earned the distinction of being a “Playful City USA,” another nationally-recognized distinction. Moreover, a recent independent household survey by the FIU Metropolitan Center of our residents resulted in 95.6% of the residents rating the quality of life in our city as “good/excellent” and 96.4 as recommending Doral as a place to live and work. We did all this and much more without raising taxes and this year, actually lowered the millage rate. One of the things I am most proud of is keeping the promise that we made to you, the constituent, to build a city from scratch without ever raising taxes. We have kept that promise by building a new city and lowering the millage rate from the time it was an unincorporated area of Miami-Dade County,
STAY CONNECTED BY CITY ‘APP’ In an exciting new effort that puts our city at the forefront of technological advances, Doral now has a new ‘app’ for Iphones and I-Pads which can be used to connect with the city, 24-7. The application, known as Doral 311, will allow you to let us know of any important issue instantly. You can now contact any of our departments with a complaint, question or suggestion through this application. Doral televises all Council Meetings, has a new user-friendly web site, a radio station, a quarterly newsletter, and posts all events at local boards outside of our local shopping areas –now, we have this ‘app,’ too, so there’s no reason not to know what’s going on in our city!

Reinvention BY DANA FERNETY
Doral Business Council Executive Director The coming year will bring thoughts of New Year’s resolutions. Perhaps this year is the time to think about a New Year’s reinvention. The ability of somebody to re-imagine their circumstances, or themselves; then implement that transformation is powerful. There are extreme examples such as Lady Gaga to more subtle, but equally powerful, cases such as Frank Gehry. Reinvention is not lying or covering up. It does not include hyping your resume or claiming talents that you don’t have. Reinvention means taking a unique talent, ability, or skill you’ve always had and bringing it to the forefront. In the case of Lady Gaga, talent and drive existed. But, in a world of media saturation, it is a challenge to gain the attention necessary to commercially showcase that talent. Lady Gaga met this challenge with visual images that drew attention, whether in a dress made of meat or a red carpet entrance in an egg. She developed a visual-based image outside the norm. This isn’t a new model – everyone from Alice Cooper to Madonna has taken this route – Lady Gaga is the latest to use it to maximum effect. One might say architect Frank Gehry is at the other end of the spectrum. Until, of course, one considers the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain or the Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. Soft-spoken, reflective, and conservative in dress and manner, Frank Gehry’s personal image belies the visual images he creates. –––––––––––— See

Getting to Know Eli Panell DBC Chairman 2012 In 2012 2012, Eli Panell will lead the Doral Business Council (DBC). Eli has been involved with the DBC for the past five years. He is a passionate and interesting young man who grew up in Puerto Rico and moved to Miami in his early 20’s after his wife, then girlfriend, found a job in Ft. Lauderdale. He has been in Miami for the past 11 years and considers Miami to be his home. Before finishing law school, Eli worked almost seven years as a tax accountant for Grant Thornton and later for PricewaterhouseCoopers. In 2011, Eli was awarded a Master of Laws in Taxation (LL.M. in taxation) from the University of Alabama School of Law. In 2005, Eli was awarded a Juris Doctor degree from Florida International University College of Law, Miami, Florida. Prior to that, he received a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting from the University of Puerto Rico. Although his experience as a tax accountant was gratifying, he knew he wanted more. So, in 2006 he opened his law firm in Doral where he is the managing member of Panell Law Firm, LLC. Panell Law is known as a business, tax and planning law firm. The company’s vision is to help find practical solutions for businesses and families, which focuses only on planning and protection. “We are a team of pragmatic, rational and mindful advisors who are always determined to find the proper plan of action and solution for each one of our clients. it’s helping our clients learn how to run their business with tax and legal efficiency or how to properly protect their spouse and children in case of an emergency, we are always there for them,” Eli said. On his off time, Eli enjoys playing tennis because it allows him to get a workout with the added value of competition. His other favorite weekend pass time is reading a good book and watching movies. For several years he contributed his time to working with children with disabilities. Because he’s been finishing his Masters
during the past two years, while working full time, he hasn’t had a lot of free time for volunteering. However, he has been actively involved with the DBC, donating hundreds of hours as the Finance Chairman for two years and as the Treasurer this year. What does it mean to Eli to have been elected the 2012 DBC Chairman? “It means I will have an opportunity to give back to the community that adopted me as their own since day one,” he said. “It is a very humbling experience and I hope I can live up to the standards and expectations of the position,” Eli added. In 2012, Eli hopes he can help each one of the members understand that the opportunities at the DBC are endless. His 3 main goals are: To grow the memberships, to implement top-notch programs and events, and to create a DBC Foundation. “The DBC belongs to the members – every milestone we reach is the achievement of our members,” said Eli. “Hope to see you at our next event!” he added.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, from page 5 ––––––––––––——————————————————————————————— In the documentary, “Sketches of Frank Gehry,” Gehry describes a dinner with the president of the Rouse Company, for whom Gehry had just completed a mall project called Santa Monica Place. The dinner was at Gehry’s home and the Rouse president was taken by the visual creativity exhibited by the home’s design. He questioned Gehry, “If you like this (Gehry’s home), you can’t possibly like that (Santa Monica Place).” “Well,” Gehry replied, “You’re right, I don’t.” “So, why’d you do it?” asked the Rouse president. “I gotta make a living,” Gehry replied. “Stop it!” demanded the Rouse president, “Stop it right now.” And Gehry did. Gehry described the feeling as one of “jumping off a cliff. Even with all the stress of it, it made me so very happy.” Jim Collins, in his book “Good to Great,” captures the most important quality of this transformation. Collins defines that quality as the “Three Circles of the Hedgehog Concept.” ‘Hedgehog’ is the “one big thing” or core activity of a company (or your talent/skill). Julio G. Anta GET FIT WITH ANTA The holiday season is an exciting and special time for every member of the family young and old. Our homes, cars, stores and malls are jam-packed with gifts, decorations and the holiday spirit. We celebrate at parties with friends, family and co-workers, filled with expectations of warmth and good times, perhaps for a vacation to celebrate with family or friends. Unfortunately, it’s also a season when the average American will gain 7 pounds, least of our holiday problems. While preparing for Christmas shopping, the common thief is also readying to ruin and steal your Christmas joy. Since starting to write for the Doral Tribune in 1999, I’ve alternated articles on adult and child fitness, Halloween safety and treats, Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners and holiday crime prevention. This year, here’s my list of holiday weightmaintenance and crime safety tips to help keep your holiday a happy one. STAY ‘HOLIDAY’ SAFE • Plan and go shopping with others • Never carry large sums of cash. (Use credit, check or debit card). • Stay in a well-lit area. • Men should keep wallets in their front pocket; women should zip purses closed
and carry them strapped across the chest. • Carry keys in your hand when going to your car. • Lock your gifts and packages in the trunk of your car. (Hide packages with a cloth cover in a “trunk-less” SUV or wagon. • Wear appropriate clothing and shoes for easy walking or running. • Only use ATMs located inside a store, mall or well-lighted location. • Beware of strangers approaching you for any reason. (This is the season for conartists who try to distract you, intending to grab your money, belongings or even your children). • Trust your intuitions. If you feel you’re being followed to your car, turn around and walk back to the store or mall. Ask a security guard to escort you to your car. STAY HOLIDAY FIT • Continue fitness workouts during the holidays. If you’re not working out, start today! If you are, work extra hard and be consistent to burn those extra calories. • Eat healthy foods before a feast or party. You’ll be fuller and less inclined to overeat or sample desserts. • Drink lots of water, before, during and after a big holiday meal to help you feel (and stay) fuller. • Walk after big meals to burn away extra calories. • For maximum results, work out with functional exercise routines and to see results work out with intensity. BY GLORIA BURNS Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons bring opportunities for giving and sharing like few other holidays. During this time, Miami Christian School is most grateful for its corporate and individual donors who help the school provide students with a

to Florida, sponsored by the Friedman Foundation for Educational Choice to research school choice and the effect on private schools. While staying at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, the group met with the Florida State Commissioner of Education, Gerardd Robinson, former Governor Jebb Bushh and various Florida legislators. Electing to visit Miami Christian School for a tour, the group also met with Woodyy Gentry,, Drr.Terii Logan and Dr. Lorenaa Morrison. Taking center stage during the Christmas season is a collection for Suni Home Orphanage in India with whom students maintain a year-to-year relationship. Before Sunil’s Home’s “Mama”” Lynnn Bauer returns for her next visit there (in early January), students have been collecting new underwear garments as well as seeds for the home’s organic garden, something they started after learning about MCS student garden. * In other news, MCS recently hosted legislators from Tennessee, Indiana and Oklahoma who were on a fact-finding trip
The MCS Library and the National Honor Society hosted “Read Under The Stars” for students on the campus. Younger students enjoyed snacks and beverages while listening to honors students read books aloud during evening hours. Parents also participated with their students. * On the cultural front, National Hispanic Heritage Day was celebrated in great style at MCS. Mariachis led an oncampus parade of students who dressed in the costumes of their national origin. Presentations and a feast of foods from various countries rounded out the festivities. In addition, Freedom Day was observed on campus with a parade and rally. A human American Flag comprised of elementary and middle school students highlighted that event with band and choral

BY Y GLORIA A BURNS More than 1,250 families in need had a turkey on their tables this Thanksgiving, thanks to the Luigi Boria Foundation. Doral City Councilman Luigi Boria and his family with generous hearts and grateful for their own many blessings wanted to share. So when Boria was elected to the Doral City Council, he decided to donate his entire salary to create the Luigi Boria Foundation as a 501c-3 non-profit with the goal of using its funds to help the less fortunate in the community. A man of great faith, Boria led more than 60 volunteers in prayer before beginning the turkey distribution at J.C. Bermudez Park Nov. 20, one of three days the turkeys were given to needy families.
On that day when unexpected numbers arrived and turkeys ran out, Boria made a trip to a local market, purchasing another dozen birds to make sure no family-in-need went home empty handed. “Families of the GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club May Van Sickle Children’s ‘Free’ Dental Clinic, serving all of Miami Dade County, are extremely grateful for this generous gift to our community,” noted Ralph Rivera who volunteered his time Nov. 20 while his wife, Dr. Iris Torres-Rivera, Clinic Director, was volunteering at SMARTRIDE. . As a volunteer the same day, this writer was privileged to experience this outpouring of goodwill, a truly an inspiring way to kick off the holiday season and one that all volunteers will long remember.

Imagine the yellow school bus so covered with ads that we smack right into the back of one, our attention diverted by 3D, strobe-lit, hologram movie ads, flashing, pulsing lights for caffeine-laden power drinks, logoencrusted sportswear, and other trinkets and trash we sell to move our economy. It’s the American way! All supposedly G-rated, although what passes for G in our overly sexualized consumerism makes the letter blush like a scarlet A. Still, our schools are so cashstrapped from the decrease in funding to public education that school boards are putting out the for-sale sign themselves. No space need be uncovered. Will students pay any attention to the work teachers place on white boards, smart boards, or, in a few impoverished public schools, chalk boards, when bells and whistles from advertisers compete for their attention? It is not philanthropy that drives companies into our schools. It’s
the thrill of a captive audience, an audience that will have no Parental Control button to screen what’s seen in a school, an audience that is just learning to think about the the credibility of a source, an audience that, by age and maturity, will believe what is placed before them. One does not challenge authority until enough learning has taken place. We will abandon four-year olds and fourteen-year-olds to the hands of advertisers. I suppose the next step is to make each teacher responsible for selling enough advertising to “endow” their position. A sort of commission sales requirement to add to the idea of “pay-for-performance.” It’s not surprising that the hallowed halls of our schools will be turned into the inside of a casino, where the lights are low, there are no windows or clocks so that no one knows whether it’s night or day, and flashing, strobing lights, bells and whistles convince even the losers they’ve won. Lock up your children, folks. Throw them an iPad, a Twinkie, and a bottle of water and call it home schooling. You might not be there, but it could be a safer space than school. The United Teachers of Dade represents 35,000 teachers and school support personnel in MDCPS. The commercialization of the Holiday season is certainly there to constantly remind us to spend as much as we can. May I suggest that you keep your bearings with your financial condition during these frenzied shopping days. What you have minus what you owe equals what is Rick Tonkinson left over. If the left over is a positive number then you are still on track toward financial stability. How w doo youu approachh holidayy giftt giving? In terms of gifts, does the person you are buying for really need another sweater in Miami? Perhaps a gift of letting them know how special they are to you and how they make the world a better place would stay in their heart long after the sweater is worn out. As for saving, I suggest that you can be kind to yourself by improving your financial condition by opening or adding to your IRA as a Holiday present to yourself. There’s more excitement in paying down on those credit cards rather than adding to their balances. There’s no one there to say thank you for doing it, but your peace of mind should not need the compliments of others. The road to financial independence is unfortunately the road that is less traveled, especially in the “spending season”. How w willl yourr giftt givingg givee “meaningg too thee season”? May I respectfully suggest that you look beyond your needs and desires to think of a person less fortunate than you. You do not have to think a lot to realize that your life would be happier if you stopped your routine to provide someone some kindness. Then you will have a real gift that no store or online service can provide. The beginning of the New Year is always filled with great anticipation, hope and determination. We typically begin fired up and are ready to conquer the world. We tell ourselves this will be the year I will “finally” reach my goals. Sadly though, by January 31st, we revert back to our old ways of not doing the things we need to do to be successful and again frustration sets in. The good news is that this doesn’t have to happen. 2012 can be the turning point for you as long as you get off to a fast start. January 1st is known as the great equalizer. Everyone starts at zero. You have a golden opportunity to accomplish feats you’ve never reached before. Your responsibility is to set realistic goals and develop the actions plans necessary to implement immediately. The best favor you can do yourself is to share your goals and objectives with a trusted friend, advisor, mentor, etc. and ask them to hold you accountable for the implementation and follow-up you will need. Here’s a thought; Why not shorten your year to 3 months as oppose to 12 months. Create a sense of urgency in your day to day, hour to hour activities. What you’ll find is that you won’t have any time to waste. Once you’ve accomplished the goal, make sure to reward yourself. Along the way, it’s also important that you acknowledge the small victories achieved on the path to the bigger prize. This will keep you motivated. As you move forward, I suggest you follow a process that will serve as a blueprint to accomplishing all the goals you’ve

Football Finals, Finally! Tips for Tailgating Family and Friends gather together before the big game, grill up some burgers and have some fun. Add 100,000 swirling, tipsy, fans to the mix and things get a bit dicey. Everyone likes to party and have a good time, but being prepared to handle the pre-game partying and party goers will keep you safe, and assure your spot in the parking lot for the next game. If you’re grilling, make sure the raw meat is kept in a separate container from the food you’ll be eating without cooking. Keep mayonnaise, potato salad and other sides spoiled by heat, refrigerated. Most importantly, wash your hands, and makes sure your kids wash theirs too! If you’re bringing friends or kids with you, you must be ready to reunite with them if they wander off. Make sure you designate a meeting spot, if your separated from them, before the festivities begin. You can check the stadiums website before heading over. The website may have some handy information regarding lost children, security and other safety regulations. Be Cool. Be careful, exercise restraint in expressing your devotion for your team, or the sport generally. In September a Wales fan died after a clash between rival fans at Wembley. The stadium may seem safe, but there are extreme instances of tragedy, when caution is not exercised. A father fell from a stadium balcony trying to catch a ball, this summer.

Layaway offers an alternative for holiday season shopping
Al Sunshine CBS MONEY WATCH “I spend more, and I’m spending more than last year,” sighs Theresa Rodriguez as she walks through the shopping aisles of her neighborhood superstore. Like so many other careful shoppers, Theresa has to save money. But she also has to make sure she has gotten all the holiday presents she can afford for her family. So this year, she is starting early and putting it all on layaway. That way she can spread out her payments. “I like it because it gives me the opportunity to pay little by little,” she said. “Sometimes you just don’t have enough money.” Local retailers tell me they expect layaways to be a lot more popular this year, but some local consumers tell me they are still not sure how it really works. They say layaway is a little more complicated because of the recordkeeping. They say it is all computerized now and some plans also are accessible online to their customers. Adrian Fernandez manages the Coral Gables Sears store. “Things are a little bit tough,” he explained. “However, it does allow the customer to use a different payment plan other than credit cards to actually make a purchase.” Shoppers still have to be careful to understand how layaway plans work. Consumer World’s Edgar Dworksy says he
believes layaway can be a great tool for keeping spending in check and spreading out payments. But he warns, you have to do the math and factor in additives like extra layaway fees. “You can only buy certain items,” he explained. “You either can or cannot buy on line. You have to make a minimum deposit. There will be a certain penalty if you cancel and that fee varies from store to store.” Theresa Rodriguez hopes to have her latest layaways all paid off over the next few weeks — or at least prior to the holidays. She also will be happy if all the bills will be paid by then. “If I don’t have to worry at the last minute, that’ll be great!” To make sure layaway shopping is right for you, go over any contracts and understand all the fine print. Ask about the store’s policy if something is on sale and marked down. Can you lock in the lowest price? You also need to check about cancellation charges or deadlines that dictate how long you can extend your purchase before having to pay it off. Hyundai Genesis gets new Tau V-8 engine option Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS Since its launch in 2008, the Hyundai Genesis sedan has captured honors from just about every automotive association in the country — including the Miami-based Southern Automotive Media Association — and it continues to draw rave reviews with the 2012 model. Hyundai engineers keep improving the beautifully styled car, this year adding new direct injection technology to the standard Lambda V-6 engine, a new eight-speed automatic transmission and enhanced chassis tuning. They have even added a new power option, a 5.0-liter direct injection Tau V-8 engine available on the 5.0 R-Spec model. The new Tau V-8 is the most powerful Hyundai engine ever, producing 429 hp at 6,400 rpm and 376 pounds-feet of torque at 5,000 rpm, and the cylinder bore was increased for a total displacement of 5.0 liters. At the same time, direct injection technology has been added to dramatically increase
power and torque, while reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Compression ratio has been increased from 10.4 to 11.5:1 for greater efficiency and output. The Tau also has a revised bedplate for improved block rigidity and less noise, as well as camshaft carriers and a roller timing chain to improve valvetrain stability. This new V-8 still offers all of the premium engine technology from the 4.6-liter V-8, including Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (D-CVVT), a tuned variable induction system, and low-friction diamond-like coatings (DLC) on piston skirts, rings and tappets. Even with these power increases, fuel economy is 16/25 mpg, almost matching the 4.6liter engine (17/26 mpg). The Tau 5.0-liter V-8 is mated to a new eight-speed transmission. This new Hyundaideveloped transmission adds two more ratios for better acceleration, shifting smoothness and efficiency over the old six-speed gearbox. All eight-speed transmissions include SHIFTRONIC manual shift capability and this new eight-speed transmission is the first offered by a non-luxury branded manufacturer. cise adjustments minimize the compromises between handling precision and ride comfort. In addition, body roll control for the 3.8 model is enhanced with a larger rear stabilizer bar, while diameter increasing from 17 mm to 18 mm. Braking also is improved with rotor size on the 3.8 model increasing from 12.6 inches to 13 inches and the addition of higher performance four-piston brake calipers, and the 4.6 model front brake rotors increasing from 13 inches to 13.6 inches for better fade resistance.
