Curves, colors, shapes, surfaces, Movement, Fluidity…what’s Victor’s angle?

Doral Business Council 2011

Member Profile

What comes to mind? For Victor Gimenez, owner of GMV Graphics & Signs Inc., it is his medium for creativity. Those elements are the cornerstone of his passion for his business. How did this Civil Engineering graduate of University of Miami discover his artistic side? The best part of which includes a pair of metallic wings and a helicopter….. but that comes later on in the story. Creativity can take many forms and expressions. For Victor, a Miami native, born of Cuban parents, his educational journey is as diverse as his interests. While at U of M he pursued his insatiable interests in Business, Art History, Motion Picture Production, Mathematics and History - graduating with a Civil Engineering degree. Certainly a broad spectrum of classes that represents his level of curiosity and intellect. This thirst for knowledge also launched his adventurous “Summer in Europe” where he visited 19 cities spanning 7 countries. By now you have gathered that Victor is not your typical Engineer. After graduation, Victor worked for several companies in his field. It was while working for Bostic Steel that the seed was planted which eventually led him to pursue venturing into his own business; an entrepreneur is born! Remember we mentioned metallic wings and a helicopter? It was during his employment at Bostic Steel that he accomplished this next engineering and story-telling moment. Take a look at The Jade, a condominium high-rise on Brickell Avenue the next time you are downtown. The wings way up at the top of the building are placed in that position because of his creative imagination and cleverness. As the project was being designed, it looked intricate, but if it could be pulled off, it would leave a great architectural mark on the Brickell Avenue skyline. After carefully

Photo courtesy: Dream Studio Victor Gimenez

analyzing the schematics, drawings, and logistics, Victor priced out the options of getting the metallic wings on top of the high-rise. A helicopter was within the project’s price range and Victor’s ingenuity accomplished the goal in hand, while giving him a heck of a story to convey! This accomplishment introduced him to the world of light manufacturing…. In 2009, Victor decided to go for his dream and opened GMV Graphics & Signs Inc. When you enter his showroom, look around and you’ll see many pictures

personally photographed by Victor during his travels; landscapes, unique angles, unusual subjects and creative use of light. On the walls are unique signs that offer ideas for you to consider. One important thing to remember, even though we are taught “not to judge a book by it’s cover,” in the world of graphics and signs, that is exactly how you make the first impression. Just having the sign is not enough, WHAT it looks like and HOW it captures your eye is key. Victor often works with clients that may have a vision and a concept but needs someone with his vast experience to tweak it and perfect the project. Successful entrepreneurs all have goals and Victor is no exception. Over the next few years, Victor will strive to achieve one of them; being the local vendor of choice for four to five Franchisors. His role with the Franchisors would be to complete the entire signage package; ie: from design (if needed) and manufacture of their signage and company logo, inside and outside signage to their vehicle raps and/or trade-show displays. The direction Victor has chosen to accomplish his goal is as detailed as the goal, however, Victor believes in relationship building through networking. He is an active member and an Ambassador for the Doral Business Council (DBC), as well as an active member of the Doral Chapter of BNI. Victor is not all work and no play. He enjoys traveling, reading, is a history buff and loves to cook. When asked to name some of the Franchisors on his wish list, three quickly came to mind: Pizza Fusion, Church’s Chicken and Einstein Bagels. Having an affinity for creativity gives GMV Graphics & Signs Inc. an edge over its competitors. Remember….“A Business with No Sign, Means a Sign of No Business” and Victor’s job is to “Get You Noticed.”

• Fitness & Defense • Shaolin Kung Fu: History of the Art

BY NANCY EAGLETON

Julio G. Anta GET FIT WITH ANTA There are numerous accounts and legends of the origins and history of the Shaolin Temple. Most martial arts and action movies today showcase Shaolin Kung Fu, and if you watched the new Karate Kid movie, “Kung Fu Panda,” you witnessed Shaolin Kung Fu. Most likely you learned of the Shaolin Temple through the Chop Sokey Kung Fu movies and the Kung Fu TV series of the 70’s. Some of that was truthful but story lines are fictional. There were indeed 36 Chambers that a monk would have to successfully complete before exiting the temple and graduating. In the Kung Fu TV movie and series, young Cain picked up the burning urn between his forearms to engrave the tiger and dragon. In reality that scene is authentic; however, in actuality, engravings on the forearms were both dragons. The legendary Shaolin Temple (Sil Lum in Cantonese) was also known as the “Number One Temple under Heaven” due to those incredible fighting monks. The Chinese characters for Shaolin translate to “Youthful Forrest” or “Youthful Gathering.” Shaolin is the mother of all Asian martial arts (Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Jiu Jitsu, etc.). Kung Fu went from mainland China to the island of Okinawa and later to Japan in the early 1900’s where it was called “karate,” originally translated as “Chinese hands.”

Shaolin is translated to the Japanese language as Shorin-ji. Shorin-ji Karate came from Shaolin Kung Fu. The Indian monk Bodhidharma also known as Damo traveled to the Shaolin Temple to teach monks internal exercises for health, yet he was not the originator of Shaolin Kung Fu. Thousands of years before Damo’s visit there were already fighting arts in China. Shaolin is part of the rich history of China. The Shaolin Temple was a place where numerous martial artists, including fugitives, hid from the authorities, met and shared their martial arts systems with different styles and weapons put to the test before doing battle. You could say that Shaolin was the first mixed martial arts arena. Numerous other styles of Kung Fu originated in the Southern Shaolin Temple including Hung Gar (of which I’m a Master, and Wing Chung, popularized by Bruce Lee). There are five family styles that came from the Southern Shaolin Temple: Hung, Lau, Choy, Li and Mok. These family kung fu systems continued the Shaolin tradition as rebels fighting the Ching Dynasty. The Southern Shaolin Temple taught monks the five “Animal” styles of fighting which were developed carefully as the monks observed and imitated the moves of the Tiger, Crane, Snake, Leopard and a mythical Dragon. From the Tiger we learn tenacity and acquire power; from the Crane, to evade and strike vital points; the Dragon teaches wisdom, the Snake, patience and flexibility, and the Leopard, speed and power. Julio Anta, head instructor of Anta’s Fitness and Self Defense, has been teaching martial arts and fitness classes in Doral for over 13 years. Contact him at 305-599-3649; on line at www.antakungfu.com; or by Email at fitdef@aol.com.

Located off the Palmetto Expressway at N.W. 25th Street, AAAA Universe offers flat screen televisions, plasmas, home theater and audio systems, mobile audio systems, cameras and camcorders, appliances and small appliances. “We opened our retail showroom about three months ago,” said Dipak Patel, owner of the family owned and operated business. “We carry all of the top brands, such as LG, Sharp, Toshiba, JVC, Panasonic and Frigidaire, to name a few.” AAAA World, the firm’s wholesale division, continues to fill thousands of consumer electronics orders for domestic and international wholesalers and retailers daily.
