The Importance to Maintaining a Healthy Weight

BY DANIELLE GRIBBLE

Owner - Your Fat Loss Coach Obesity has become a serious epidemic over the years. The quality of our lives cannot be measured by our annual salary, but by how we feed and treat our bodies. Reaching and maintaining a healthy weight is extremely important. Obesity can initiate as many as 30 different diseases; some of which include diabetes, coronary disease, cardiovascular disease, certain cancers and osteoarthritis. More than two-thirds of adults in the United States are obese or overweight and spent more than $147 billion dollars in the recent year treating such diseases according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Child obesity is also quickly on the rise. The prevalence of childhood obesity has doubled amongst the ages of 2-5, tripled amongst the ages of 6-11 and more than tripled amongst the ages of 12-19. The only way to gain control on these statistics is through education, lifestyle, dietary and physical activity changes. Knowing your BMI (Body Mass Index) is an essential guide to maintaining a healthy weight based on height and weight. When an individual loses 5-10% of their body fat, some of the benefits include lower blood pressure, sugar and cholesterol levels along with less stress on the cardiovascular and coronary system. Education, changing your lifestyle and eating habits and making a conscious effort are all steps in the right direction towards making a change for not only our lives, but our future generations to come. Lets all become trend setters, not only to look good, but to feel good and live longer, healthier and happier lives.

New country, new language, new customs, new life… How about a new career? How about converting and building a career on what was, I dare say, a hobby? YES! Irwin Cadenas, from Dream Studios, did just that. Arriving to the world of photography seems to be something he did not choose, but instead, it chose HIM. After graduating with a Masters Degree in International Taxes, Irwin worked in the Tax Department of a photo lab. His responsibilities included excessive traveling. His career was on a fast track, but the stress was obvious. While home in Venezuela, he saw an ad for photography classes. Now this was not just any one teaching the classes. This instructor was a well know National Geographic’s photographer by the name of Ana Maria Yanez. She was looking to expand her business by teaching classes. Irwin was looking for a hobby to help him channel his stress. When he expressed interest in taking her course, he also told her about his schedule. They agreed that he would photograph while on his business trips and meet on the weekends to review his work. This opened a whole new set of eyes on the world for Irwin….. an eye that focused through the lens of a camera! Business trips now became an opportunity to photograph in different parts of the globe. One of the most famous cities that welcomed

Irwin to explore the architecture, natural landscape, and the sea of faces was Paris. After all, his job required him to live there one week every three months. In one of his trips, Ana Maria Yanez had given Irwin a task of capturing a story with his photos. One catch: No digital. She required him to purchase an “old fashion” camera and use film. He roamed the streets and captured moments in time, faces of strangers, telling a story. As he shares this story, his face lights up, remembering each click of the camera. With sadness, he tells me the climax of the story: When he arrived in Venezuela and had the rolls developed, they were overexposed! There was nothing on the negatives. All those beautiful moments captured were meant for only him. They live in his mind and come to life when he shares the sad tale. That experience changed him. From that point on… digital is the only photography medium he uses. When Irwin made the decision to leave Venezuela for America, he had a vision… a dream of taking his “hobby” to the next level….a new career. In 2004, he came alive in his new role as an artisan that captures moments with his camera; he realized his vision and opened Dream Studios. The name is quite apropos since he is living his dream. Irwin followed the path common to those that step into the world of photography. His

bread and butter included that of a social event photographer. People sought him out for weddings, baptisms, special events and family portraits. One person took him to the next level. Michel Hamonet was a local magazine editor and publisher. Irwin was brought on board and was responsible for all the photography that accompanied the editorials and stories in the Doral Lifestyle. They say when you break into a new level in your career, the new path takes a life of its own. The experience from the initial magazine has led him to work with numerous other magazines. Is there more to Irwin? As a matter of fact there is; he has a passion for singing which lead him to study opera as a tenor. Every Sunday you can hear Irwin’s beautiful voice at St. Patrick Church in Miami Beach. He gives private piano lessons just for the love of music. So much accomplished… so what is on the horizon for Irwin Cadenas? He is now focusing on Fashion Photography. His surprising success has come to him at every step along the way; the path has cleared before him allowing him the opportunity to spring board to the next level. Know that when Irwin Cadenas points his camera to capture those moments, you will get a commercial look to your photos worthy of a magazine cover.

A Full Service Bank and Valued Trustee member of DBC Leadership is a skill many people strive to learn, but few understand what it means. Edgar Moscoso, is a successful Branch Manager, and Vice President of SunTrust; he manages a team that respects his leadership abilities. The team approach is something that has been a way of life for Edgar. When visiting Edgar’s office you will see many appreciation plaques from his involvement coaching athletic teams; scouting and school events; Edgar and Maria lead by example raising their three children with core values that include generosity of spirit. Edgar’s core character has grounded him in a manner that he acknowledges hard work must be balanced with quality family time. His early years were spent on the lime and papaya farm his father owned as a pioneer in the Homestead agricultural circle. Edgar drove the tractor during the summer. Graduation from Southwest High and University of South Florida followed; he met his beautiful wife, Maria and they married and moved back to Miami to raise their family. As a member of the community and in his personal life, Edgar understands the power

Edgar Moscoso - Branch Manager, and Vice President of SunTrust

and value of networking and giving back. He is the face of SunTrust at the DBC and an extremely involved member! Attending DBC events begins with breakfast meetings, but he also participates at events such as the Relay for Life-Doral and the March of Dimes. The DBC connections Edgar has made have led to many unusual stories. For instance, his friend, Raul Pino, GM for the Marriott Villas, approached Edgar with an idea. Edgar’s SunTrust branch is closed on

Saturday/ Sunday, so why not use the bank’s parking lot as additional parking for golfers at the Doral Golf Resort? The proceeds from the parking fees are donated to the Children’s Miracle Network. From this collaboration, “the initial idea” has resulted in donations totaling more than $6,000. These two leaders joined forces to provide a monetary benefit for a noble charity. Talent and dedication are vital elements in having a successful team; there’s 80 years

of combined banking experience providing longevity/ continuity of employees at this SunTrust branch. They know how to cultivate and retain talent to offer the best banking experience and problem solving solutions for their clients. It is this commitment that won the employees of SunTrust the title of “Highest in Customer Satisfaction with Small Business Banking” and 18 “Greenwich Excellence Awards in Small Businesses and Middle Market Banking.” At the Doral Branch of SunTrust you will be greeted by a leader, one exceling in good customer service; one that knows the importance of cultivating a team of talented individuals, but also sees the value of interweaving his professional success with community involvement. SunTrust is a gem of a branch in Doral… come on in and ask to speak with Edgar, see what innovative opportunities he can provide for your personal and business banking needs so you can Live Solid. A Better Dental Experience

A visit to the dentist is unlikely to ever make your list of favorite things to do, but you can make yourself more comfortable by learning how to relax while your there. Going to the dentist isn’t fun, but it doesn’t have to be excrutiating, either. Learn to relax as much as possible before and after your dental experience. • Arrive relaxed calm and on time. Plan your visit with care, be sure to allow plenty of time to arrive. If you are running late or have difficulty getting to your dentist on time you will

naturally be more stressed. A high level of stress can make you irritable and that makes it more difficult to control your level of anxiety. • Try excercising your brain. Don’t just sit in the dentist’s chair thinking about nothing or worse... imagining what might happen. Remember that you can always bring along your mp3 playerand listen to music. Whatever you do, make sure you have something to occupy your mind other than what is going on. • Remember you’re in control. It is important that you let your dentist know how you will signal that you want them to stop because you need a break before the dental treatment can start again. The mere fact that you can control the situation usually helps reduce anxiety and makes the treatment more bearable. PTF Opens New Area; Seussical Students Shine! MIAMI CHRISTIAN

UPDATE BY GLORIA BURNS

Miami Christian School is fortunate to have a very generous group of concerned parents who donate their time to school activities and fundraising. In fact, the MCS Parent Teacher Fellowship provided a remodeled indoor eating area for the elementary students through fundraising events and continues to look for projects to improve and enhance the school. In April, MCS opened the new eating area with a representative from each class cutting a section of a ceremonial ribbon. With that project completed, the PTF plans to tackle yet another renovation for the pre-kinder and elementary school playgrounds. A barbeque kicked off that effort, certainly the first of many activities to come for the organization. • • • • • • • • • •

In other student news, K u n a l Khiyani, was selected as one of only three high school students to work at the University of M i a m i ’ s Miller School of Medicine Summer for Sickle Cell S c i e n c e Natalya Galarza Program. Kunal, a junior, will be assigned a faculty mentor, working in research and earn a stipend for the eight-week program. Participating students in one or more summer sessions are encouraged to make presentations at local or national scientific meetings and may successfully contribute to papers published in peer review journals. Kunal has also been accepted to a National Institute of Health Eye Institute summer internship and the University of Florida’s summer science

training program. • • • • • • • MCS students Natalya Galarza and Bernardo Hevia Lima Meireles received Special Congressional Recognition certificates for participating in “An Artistic Discovery,” the Congressional art competition for high school students. Instructor Charlene Coulter also received a certificate of recognition for her outstanding and invaluable service to the community. • • • • • •

Drama students from elementary to high school grades participated in the production of Seussical, Jr, The Musical,

directed by the very talented Diana Williams. The second musical production Williams directed this school year, it brought standing ovations while showcasing talents of MCS students both on and off stage. In addition to nine students in the chorus, 23 elementary students and 40 drama students entertained the audience with a tale involving famed Dr. Seuss characters. Great performances all around were highlighted by Michael Santiago as Horton the Elephant; David Tamayo, Cat in the Hat; John Ramirez, Jojo; Rebecca Naranjo, Gertrude Mc Fuzz; Alex Rios, Mayzie LaBird; Melissa Gonzalez, Sour Kangaroo; Nina Beam, a ‘scene stealing’ Young Kangaroo; the monkeys, led by David Quintero; bird girls led by Victoria Gonzalez, Hanna Sielk, and Sarah Betancourt. One character who stole the show was Michael Mata as the Elephant Bird, proving the theatrical adage: "There are no small parts; only small actors." All MCS performers fulfilled a traditionalThespian motto: "Act well your part, there all the honor lies"

Train with Intensity Julio G. Anta GET FIT WITH ANTA As a fitness and martial arts instructor, as well as a strength and conditioning coach, I’m often asked “why don’t I see results in my fitness training?” I can truly answer that with just one word: Intensity. Stop making excuses. If you don’t see significant change in your physical self, you are not pushing hard enough. Walk into any gym in the world and you’ll see a few unfit people on a treadmill talking on the phone or with a friend. I recently saw one lady reading a book while working on a thigh adductor machine. If you’re doing anything other than the exercise when working out, you’re not focusing. And if you’re not focused, your workout will not be intense. Intensity is the total effort you put into your workout. Training with intensity is training out of your comfort zone -- giving it all you’ve got, each and every set and rep that you do every day. You must give maximum effort in every workout to lose weight, burn fat, build muscle and see any positive change in your body. I tell my students who think they’ve finished a set of exercises, if a gun was put to their head and told to perform five more reps or they’d be shot, they pump out all five or even 10 more repetitions.

Another example of change with intense training: look at the body of an Olympic sprinter alongside an Olympic marathon runner. The sprinter’s race is short and intense but the marathon runner has to pace himself to jog for hours to complete a grueling 26-mile race. Look at the sprinter’s body, i.e., males with muscular legs, wide shoulders and chiseled abdominals, female sprinters with hard, feminine bodies. Now look at male marathoners with very little muscularity, narrow shoulders and frail-looking bodies, or frail-like women marathoners narrow hipped with slight feminine lines. Such differences mean keeping workouts no longer than an hour, preferably 45 minutes since your testosterone and other hormone levels start dropping after 45 minutes. Testosterone is hormone your body uses to grow muscle. I remember in the late 70’s, ‘Mr. Olympia’ Arnold Schwarzenegger and ‘Cardio Guru’ Richard Simmons guesting on the Tonight Show, both asked why someone should follow their training methods as opposed to another’s. Arnold’s answer: do you want to have a body like me or hair like Richard? So my question to you is: do you want to look like a sprinter or a marathoner? If you answered ‘sprinter,’ cut your workout time. But work with intensity. Julio Anta is the head instructor of Anta’s Fitness and Self Defense in Doral since 1998, Contact him at 30- 599-3649 or via the internet at AntaKungFu.com or fitdef@aol.com

Navy Seals’ Canine Commando Eric Gonzales and friend K9 TIPS Having returned from Afghanistan as a Kennel Master in February 2011, I can offer a sneak peak as to what many may wonder about regarding to the canine that accompanied the Navy Seals during the raid that resulted in the death of Osama Bin Laden. As mentioned in MSN coverage, the SLATE on May 6, 2011 posted beneath the title, “Canine Commando,” …neither the Pentagon nor the White House is talking about the role the dog played in Sunday's operation…” As a Kennel Master I had the privilege of supervising several canine-handler teams which consisted of narcotics and explosive detector dogs. While some contracts require a single-purpose canine -implying that the dog will be used for one purpose only, such as detection -- my contract required training of dual purpose

dogs, the use of detection as well as protection, the latter referring to an ‘apprehension’ or ‘bite dog.’ The military’s “Canine Commandos” are required to go through a training curriculum of several weeks to several months when chosen for the program. Breeds of choice for most military working dogs (MWD) are German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, Dutch Shepherds, and Labrador Retrievers. Labradors are usually singlepurpose performers for detection although exceptions exist. Once a canine breed is selected for training, the dog is required to perform several exercises that include obedience, protection, and detection, before flying ‘into country’ (overseas). These trained dogs are especiallyvaluable because tests have confirmed that detector canines have an 80% success rate compared to man-made detector items (metal detectors, etc.) that have a 50% success rate. Canines also possess a “dual” usage such as an ability to apprehend a bad guy if and when needed. Furthermore, they remain as man’s best friend in many aspects, too numerous to mention. Dislike by our four-legged companions for the Taliban insurgents is subtly

Manage your Financial Condition like a Business

Most working people are employees and they think like employees when it comes to their financial condition. This means their focus is on salary, health insurance, 401k and vacation time. Yes, these benefits do impact your financial condition but it is one-sided. It is on the side of what you have (assets). We suggest that in order to attain financial independence, employees should begin to think and behave as a business owner. A business owner’s focus is not only on what they have but more importantly, what they owe (liabilities). This means accounts payable, which for individuals are items such as credit cards, car loans and mortgages. On this side of the balance sheet, the business owner wants to minimize expenses.

What you have (assets) minus what you owe (liabilities) results in what’s left over (net worth). $1 of assets and $1 of liabilities means $0 in net worth. $1 less in liabilities means you are $1 richer. Many employees with more salary will spend more, so they still have little net worth or financial independence. The car and house they own may be fancier but they may still be broke. Thebook,TheMillionaireNextDoor, describes how a business owner thinks and behaves. It is no secret how to become financially secure. It comes down to not thinking and behaving like an employee when it comes to your financial future. Tonkinson Financial provides hands-on money management for the middle class. increased because the dog is considered a dirty and detestable creature (a ‘demon’ to most). They believe that if they kill themselves as suicide bombers in the presence of the dog, and the dog dies along with them, that they will not inherit the kingdom that promises the many virgins that await them. For this reason many soldiers adopt the stray dogs found throughout the areas they protect. Even though adopting canines may help deter suicide bombers, remote improvised explosive devices (IED’s), roadside bombs and air strike missiles still account for most Taliban attack weapons Deploying a dog into a hostile area presupposes that the canine will find the person or subject in question and apprehend the individual by cornering the subject through intimidation or by actually biting the subject to prevent escape. In the Middle East war fronts, a search for explosives utilized keeping a dog on a long leash averaging 30 feet long. At that distance, manipulating the dog will help to

avoid injury or death if an IED or trip wire is disrupted. The canine is required to alert a handler passively, simply coming to a sitting position when it smells an explosive component. Unfortunately, many are detonated by a remote control or controller; thus, the further a handler is distanced from the dog, the better chance there is of surviving serious injury or death. Besides basic commands (sit, come, heel, etc.) granted, dogs sent to apprehend a fleeing subject are trained to have obedience take precedence when confronted with that possibility. The need to control is paramount to assure maximum success for the team and to best safeguard both dog and handler from injuries or even death in critical situations requiring instant decisions. At Regions Security Services the Client is Heard, Understood & Acknowledged BY SUSAN SMITH Carlos Rivero Junior is a distinguished servicedisabled veteran w h o served in both Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom military initiatives when a “line of duty” injury forced him into early separation. Yet Rivero turned his personal tragedy into a success story by utilizing his vast security experience while on the ground overseas to launch Regions Security Services; a prominent young security company servicing the Miami Dade and Broward communities. Boasting over 10 years experience in the security industry, the mission behind Regions Security Services is to provide superior security services in the most cost effective manner while customizing a plan to address the needs of each particular client and simultaneously take care of them with the best customer service possible. Some of the many industries the company serves are aviation, real estate, healthcare, residential, government, hospitality, educational, retail and financial. Licensed Community Association Manager Jackie Perez says of Mr. Rivero and his team: “he takes care of my communities that I manage. I have to say from dealing with many security companies that they are outstandingly efficient, very professional and consummately communicative which is critical for the over 385 homes we serve.” Evaluating clients’ needs and goals to develop a unique plan to address them is paramount to the success of any security initiative according to Rivero. The Regions Security Strategy Plan is about articulating an overall vision of preparedness for clients; identifying the goals that will make their vision a reality. “I take great care to protect my family so I know first hand how important it is to protect your loved ones and that is the same care I take with my clients; their properties and their family or staff,” says Mr. Rivero.

Rivero adds that unlike other security companies Regions Security invests a tremendous amount of time in training his team, providing tailored services to each client, and responding immediately to concerns that may arise. Jon Simpkins of Land and Sea Equipment Corporation says “if you really want to know who Carlos Rivero is follow him around on one of his 15 hour days. He is a well seasoned security professional. He is the motivating force that supports the services that his company provides through quality training with his security officers. He gets the job done!” After separating from the military Rivero became a security officer for one of the largest security firms in the world, moving up the ladder quickly and garnering invaluable experience from his previous positions before becoming founder and CEO of Regions Security Services. “While I was stationed overseas I provided security to the base. Although certainly the dynamic there is unlike the private sector work I do now, there is a type of awareness and discipline applicable in any scenario that I apply to my work today” explained Rivero. Rivero holds a Community Association Managers Certification, CPR and First Aid Certification, numerous security licenses and he is a member of the American Society for Industrial Security. During his military service he received the Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Expeditionary Medal, Army Physical Fitness Badge and the Army Achievement Medal. Regions Security Services is the solution for companies and individuals seeking quality and affordable security investment alternatives with a fresh innovative common sense approach to problem solve for the client. Ready for Hurricane Season: Pass it on. By Curtis Sommerhoff, Director, Miami-Dade Department of Emergency Management Nothing concerns emergency responders more than complacency. In the minds of too many people, disasters are events that happen elsewhere. We watch tsunamis, earthquakes, floods, fires, tornadoes and terrorist attacks occur in far-off places around the world, never believing they will impact us. Admittedly, even the experts will tell you that disasters are lowprobability events. In South Florida, the threat of hurricanes is real. When we in Miami-Dade Emergency Management prepare, plan, strategize and exercise for hurricanes, we are gearing up for an event that is not only possible, but likely. We live in hurricane country. Since 1900, MiamiDade County has been at least indirectly impacted by a hurricane an average of every 4 years. It has been precisely six years since Hurricanes Wilma and Katrina tested our community’s ability to prepare, respond and recover. Simple math will tell you it could very well be our time – again – this year. While forecasts have improved, lessons have been learned, and new rules give us more lead-time when a hurricane threatens, nothing can reduce damage and save lives like personal preparedness. Before and during each hurricane season, emergency managers begin beating the preparedness drum urging residents to compile their hurricane supply kit and make an

Curtis Sommerhoff emergency plan. We hold news conferences, distribute hurricane guides (call 3-1-1 to get yours) and preach the gospel of preparedness in an effort to reach, teach and motivate the public. We will continue to do so. However, as it turns out, the most powerful preparedness spokespersons are not government agencies, but members of our public. A recent national study shows that when average people share what they have done to prepare with neighbors and friends who have not done much, it motivates further preparedness. So toss aside musings about the weather when in the company of friends, neighbors and colleagues. Instead, start a conversation about hurricane preparedness. Get a kit, make a plan, be informed, and most importantly, pass it on. For more information on hurricane preparedness, go to www.miamidade.gov/hurricane or www.readysouthflorida.org.
