ocal dignitaries, including City of Doral Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez, Doral City Council member and Codina Partners President and Chief Operating Officer K. Lawrence Gragg broke ground on the new up to $22 million Doral City Hall. “Today is a day of celebration for the residents of the City of Doral. After a lot of hard work, the City of Doral is on its way to building, not just a City Hall, but a place where the entire community can meet, where cultural events can be held for our residents, and a true home for the City of Doral,” said City of Doral Mayor
Juan Carlos Bermudez. “This accomplishment is another example of why Doral is a premier place to live, work, learn and play.” The City Hall is being developed by CM Doral Development Company, associated with Codina Partners, a boutique real estate investment and development firm built on a foundation of success and propelled by foresight, delivering projects of distinction that stand the test of time. The new three-story, 60,000 square-foot Doral City Hall will be LEED Silver certified and will be built on a 1.8-acre site in the vicinity of Northwest 53rd Terrace and 84th Avenue. It will offer 250

parking spaces in Downtown Doral, a 120-acre mixed-use community destined to become the heart of the City. The construction of the new Doral City Hall was approved unanimously by the Doral City Council on August 11, 2010. The total cost cannot exceed $22 million and the construction of the project could come in below that total. K. Lawrence Gragg, President and Chief Operating Officer, Codina Partners, added, “Over the last three decades we have watched the City of Doral progress one development at a time into a vibrant community that families and businesses from all over the world now call home. Codina Partners is proud to have contributed to this growth with projects like Downtown Doral, honored to be a part
of the city’s future with the delivery of a new Doral City Hall and pleased to continue to develop Doral into one of South Florida’s premier destinations.” Doral City Hall will be the centerpiece of Downtown Doral, a mixed-use development featuring thousands of residential units, more than one million square feet of commercial space and an elementary school. The community, destined to be the heart of the city, will also feature a three-acre public park, landscaped medians and a residential boulevard lined with townhouses complemented by beautiful landscaping, fountains and shade pavilions.

Financial Planning During the Holidays? Aree you ua spenderr orr a saverr during thee holidays? To a lesser or greater degree, we are either savers or spenders. The commercialization of the Holiday season is certainly there to constantly remind us to spend as much as we can. May I suggest that you keep your bearings with your financial condition during these frenzied shopping days. What you have minus what you owe equals what is left over. If the left over is a positive number then you are still on track toward financial stability. How w do o you u approach holidayy giftt giving? sweater in Miami? Perhaps a gift of letting them know how special they are to you and how they make the world a better place would stay in their heart long after the sweater is worn out. As for saving, I suggest that you can be kind to yourself by improving your financial condition by opening or adding to your IRA as a Holiday present to yourself. There’s more excitement in paying down on those credit cards rather than adding to their balances. There’s no one there to say thank you for doing it, but your peace of mind should not need the compliments of others. The road to financial independence is unfortunately the road that is less traveled, especially in the “spending season”. How w willl yourr giftt giving g to o the givee “meaning season”?
May I respectfully suggest that you look beyond your needs and desires to think of a person less fortunate than you. You do not have to think a lot to realize that your life would be happier if you stopped your routine to provide someone some kindness. Then you will have a real gift that no store or online service can provide. Rick Tonkinson is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP™). Daring - above ground, underground and on the ground! 35 Seconds…that’s all the time you have if you are participating in competitive formation skydiving. 35 seconds, as you and your teammates are falling through the air, to create a multitude of shapes and figures…44 shapes in 35 seconds is the current record! Competitive Formation Skydiving has been Mauricio Castrillon’s (Consensus International) passion for the past 20 years. A natural born athlete, Mauricio’s competitiveness surely must have begun growing up as one of six children in Bogota, Columbia. Along with hang gliding as he jumps from high cliffs, Mauricio also loves “the rush” underwater. He scuba dives, which includes the very exciting and many times dangerous, cave diving. He plays competitive tennis and is close to mastering his most recent endeavor snow skiing. The fervor for life manifests itself in the many facets of Mauricio’s personality…each one more interesting than the last. His fascinating life begins in Bogota, Columbia where he graduated with a degree in Computer Systems Engineering from the Universidad de Los Andres. At the age of 22, he began his career with General Motors. At the age of 25, Mauricio moved to Madrid to work with IBM and expanded his academic credentials by attending Instituto de Directivos de Empresas, graduating after three years with a Masters which concentrated in Commercial Sales and Marketing. Mauricio’s work with Fortune 500 companies also includes working with Pfizer Pharmaceuticals at their New York headquarters. While living in New York, Mauricio, not quite ready to stop learning new things, began taking

courses in journalism, broadcasting and news anchoring. He is a self-proclaimed news junkie. Soon after moving to Miami (to help care for his parents who live here) he enrolled at the University of Miami where he continued to pursue his other passion; journalism. Along with three other professionals in the field, Mauricio currently hosts an Internet radio news show entitled “La Cafetera”. His segment covers world news, primarily how it effects Latin America and our local community. Mauricio was named by Dinero Magazine, a prestigious business magazine in Columbia, as one of the Top 25 Most Successful Columbians abroad. He has an impressive resume of Who’s Who working in MultiNational Corporations. Learning what makes the Fortune 500 companies work smoothly, efficiently and effectively helped set him on his next corporate journey. About four years ago, Mauricio and his brother, Andres opened Consensus International in the states. The company is not a new concept but rather an extension, yet separate entity, of the company that began over 20 years ago in Columbia. Andres, as the technical guru, has worked in the arena of ERP systems (Enterprise Resource Planning) for many years. Mauricio is the marketing and sales professional and together with their team are bringing the powerful tools used by Fortune 500 companies to small to midsize companies. This powerful tool allows a company to control workflow information in order to be “as efficient and effective as possible. The ERP system Consensus International uses is SAP Business One.
Mauricio Castrillon
This system brings best practices from the large companies to you. SAP is known worldwide and Business One has more than proven its worth. Mauricio and Andres work with clients to develop the blueprint for your company’s solutions…working with this solution and making the blue print into something workable for you company. They implement and train the end user. On the personal side, Mauricio met his beautiful wife, Michelle while both worked for Pfizer in New York. Their joy was completed two years ago when they welcomed their adorable daughter, Elena. Mauricio was able to share his adrenaline rush with Michelle only once when she agreed to “just one sky dive”. However, snow skiing is a passion they both enjoy and try to do so several times a year. Currently Mauricio and his siblings share in the care of their elderly parents living in Miami. In sharing stories with this very grounded, all around man, one cannot help but feel as if you are right there…ready to jump off that plane and begin your 35 seconds of... Q

All It Takes is 12 As we quickly approach another holiday season, we’re reminded ever so fondly that another year is coming to an end. Now is the time to start planning the 2011 business strategy. As we prepare for the upcoming 12 months, consider this:

Relationships

Business

of what is completed, which forms a whole, a perfect and harmonious unit.
12.
Vacation & Leisure
• The number twelve is an indicator of great understanding and wisdom.
• It is considered to be the ancient number of completion as it signals the end of childhood and the beginning stages of adulthood.
As business search for growth, it’s important to take the time to prepare the path for great achievements. As the year winds down, it is imperative to set aside 12 days of planning for the 12 months of business in 2011. Start by setting goals based on 12 priority areas:
The goals must have an action plan for implementation and an effective & consistent follow-up system. There must be accountability and an on-going review of progress. The path to the goals will be enlightened by many insights and ideas
that will only be realized through a concerted effort and hard work. Start planning TODAY for an incredible, prosperous, healthy and wealthy 2011! Pete De La Torre Doral Business Council Executive Director
As you go through this exercise, identify the one, most important goal of that priority area. A goal that is specific, measurable and achievable. There are 2 vital steps in making goals a reality -- Implementation and follow-up.

DBC 1st Annual Healthcare Fair The first annual DBC International Health Fair was a huge success. This “open to the public” informative and stimulating event took place at Miami International Mall center court, on Saturday October 23rd, 2010 with Baptist Health South Florida generously acting as the presenting sponsor. The purpose of the health fair was to promote The City of Doral as an international health care destination and encourage the audience to take measures on improving their overall health. Over 25,000 people visited the mall during the afternoon and took advantage of the free health screenings and educational material
that was available. Prominent healthcare professionals Dr. Alejandro Badia, Badia Hand to Shoulder Center, and Dr. Louis Fernandez, Institute for Cardiovascular Disease, were on site to provide their medical expertise and answer the audience’s questions. Table sponsors had the opportunity to showcase their health care products and services. The DBC would like to thank the following sponsors of this event for their participation in the healthcare fair: Badia Hand to Shoulder Center; Centurion Chiropractic Center; College of Business and Technology;

Another Sensational Accomplishment for the DBC Woman’s Alliance Group Benefiting A Safe Haven for Newborns and sponsored by Palmetto General Hospital, the Woman’s Alliance Group clearly scored large at this year’s event held Thursday, October 7th at the InterContinental Hotel Doral Miami. All of the WAG Committee Members and Volunteers along with The 2010 Woman’s Alliance Group Chair, Maria Prado, of Miami International Mall; and Co-Chairs Linda Leal of Security Management Innovations and Teri Soriano from Intercontinental Hotels Group are to be highly congratulated on setting a new attendance record with over 200 members and guests present. “How fabulous” and “what fun” was heard most often as the guests perused the 48 auction items generously donated by supporters with the auction proceeds benefitting this year’s charitable choice, A Safe Haven For Newborns. Founded by Nick Silverio after his wife’s tragic death, A Safe Haven for Newborns was created with the ultimate goal of eliminating infant abandonment in Florida through education, prevention and statewide community involvement. They maintain a 24/7 toll-free multi-
lingual referral help line assisting people (mostly women) in distress or crisis. Their mission is to save babies in danger of abandonment and preserve the health and future of their mothers and fathers. Close to $8,000 was collected for this organization and will be presented to Nick Silverio at the next DBC breakfast meeting in November. Diana Gonzalez of NBC 6 generously donated her time to act as Mistress of Ceremonies enlightening the audience with various news events. Miami-Dade State Attorney, Katherine Fernandez Rundle was the guest speaker talking to members and guests about “Women Leaders of Today and Tomorrow”. Their precious time is graciously appreciated. Platinum sponsor, Palmetto General Hospital featured Dr . Nuria Lawson, General Surgeon who took the time to inform us about breast cancer and the importance of early detection and screening. Informational tables were spread throughout the room showcasing products and services by generous gold sponsors Miami International Mall and Logistical Outsourcing, as well as silver sponsors Esserman Motors, Regis H/R, InterContinental Hotel

Group, CMA Enterprises, Forever Smile Dentistry, Rick Tonkinson & Associates and US Century Bank . Community Newspapers, Dreams Studio, Logistical Outsourcing, Arts of Flowers and CAO Chocolates all donated inkind contributions while Tradewinds Power, Lenys Klumpp, Airtech Air Conditioning and Coral Gables Women’s Club contributed as Table Sponsors. The 2nd Annual Woman’s Alliance Group Luncheon was triumphant for another reason - YOU - YOUR ATTENDANCE - and YOUR Auction purchases. THANK YOU - to all who contributed and to those who attended. Miami Christian School Receives Makeover BY GLORIA BURNS
Thanks to the generosity of the folks at Brickman Group, one of the nation's largest landscape design and build and horticultural services companies, Miami Christian School has undergone a major face lift at its campus. During Brickman Group’s community service day on October 15, a dozen managers and crew arrived early in the morning with trucks, equipment, and hundreds of plants, shrubs and trees. By noon, they had transformed the area leading up to the front office as well as the triangle area in the parking lot into lovely landscaped sites with great curb appeal. They will be coming back to periodically check on the progress of the newly planted sections and fertilize. For Brickman employees, community service day is an annual way to give back to the many communities in which they provide services and is something they all look forward to every year. Following their morning of hard work, groups working a various locations throughout the region met for a great picnic and thanked for their service. Among the many helping out at Miami Christian were Don Simmons and Mark Sheme.

• Fitness & Defense • Humility Now’s Friday Feast Aids the Homeless
Julio G. Anta GET FIT WITH ANTA Thanksgiving is a holiday set aside to thank God for our many blessings. Yet while others celebrate, at least 700,000 people live on the streets every night. In Miami-Dade County alone, approximately 5,000 are homeless. Numerous organizations bless the less fortunate on Thanksgiving Day with food baskets and gifts but few feed, clothe and spend time with the homeless. I believe that we are blessed to be a blessing, so what better way is there to celebrate Thanksgiving than to bless those less fortunate than ourselves. In martial arts and fitness, we teach our students to be thankful for what they have and that it is better to give than to receive. We encourage them to do random acts of kindness and provide for the less fortunate. Now, for the second year, my center will partner with the homeless advocacy organization, “Humility Now” for their “Black Friday Feast” on November 26, the day after Thanksgiving. This event will feed and clothe the homeless in downtown Miami will take place at the Park West area, beginning at 11 a.m. Also partnering with us is the church I attend, Iglesia Casa de Alabanza of Doral, 180 Church of Doral and Christ Fellowship Church.
“Humility Now” was birthed from the vision of my son, Julio D. Anta who at 16 started feeding the homeless with a friend from the church he then attended at the time. When denied of making it a regular event at his church, Julio continued to feed the homeless using his own money, and last year, at age 19, decided to start Humility Now, a non-profit organization based on the idea that true humility counts others more significant than yourself. Today, Humility Now works with numerous churches, community groups and people just like you to make a diference in this world. In just one year, Humility Now has held such events as a Thanksgiving BBQ & Clothing Drive and an Adoption Program for Christmas. Earlier this year, it stopped the City of Miami from making it illegal to feed the homeless! For those who are too busy to make it to their volunteer events, Humility Now sells T-shirts. For every Tshirt sold, one is given to the homeless. (The shirts are available at http://humilitynow.storenvy.com). If interested in more information about the event, including donating time or resources, please email info@humilitynow.com. …and don’t forget to thank God for your many blessings. Here’s wishing you a great Thanksgiving in 2010! Julio Anta is a fitness and martial arts instructor and owner of Anta’s Fitness and Self Defense in Doral since 1998. For information, tel. 305- 599-3649 or visit the Internet at AntaKungFu.com.

1980’s Begins New Growth, First Planned Communities The following material is based on an article From Everglades to Industrial Center to Hometown, originally written by Cindy Rodriguez Pereira, and can be accessed on the Cty of Doral web site Ed. Note. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Part 2 (1980-2000) By the early '80s, Doral started to experience the first spurts of growth when Alfred's and Doris' grandson, Bill developed Doral Estates, a community followed by a joint venture with Lennar Homes that would build Doral Park with an 18-hole golf course, just southwest of the already-famous Doral Resort and Blue Monster PGA tournament site. Both communities were named after the Doral Hotel, a trend that was to be repeated many more times as the area began to expand. Younger families started flooding into the immediate area northwest of Miami International Airport but had to travel to purchase even the most basic essentials, because there were no stores - or schools or parks. Although the majority of the original homes were investment properties or second homes, the early fulltime residents believed that the quality of life and the low housing costs far exceeded the lack of amenities and started coming together as a community. Traffic problems were nonexistent, except for the occasional escaped cow. There were more farms with cows, horses and chickens than people along NW 107 Avenue; NW 87 Avenue was just two lanes and NW 41 Street ended at NW 104 Avenue. From 1983-85, the county imposed a building moratorium for the area to protect its well fields. Once the ban was lifted, Doral experienced tremendous growth. The West Dade Federation of Homeowner Associations was formed in 1989 under the leadership of Morgan Levy to stand strong against any propos-
HISTORY OF DORAL als that threatened the community's welfare. As a result of those efforts, a police station instead of a jail was built, higher development standards were implemented, and more lighting, roads and landscaping appeared in the area. Incorporation began in earnest in 1995 with the realization that residents were paying a very high price for services received; they wanted more services at a reasonable cost. The County met the first attempt at incorporation with a year's deferral. Doral was then classified as a "donor community," meaning that the taxes paid were more than the cost of operations within its service areas. With the deferal, incorporation efforts intensified even more. The County was allowing unchecked growth that was detrimental to the residents. In 1996, the first election of a Community Council was held and soonto-be County Commissioner Jose "Pepe" Cancio, Sr., Mario Pita and Barbara B. Thomas were elected to Council seats while three other members were appointed. The Council met every month to work on different projects and to address the needs of the community. During the 1990’s, Miami International Airport’s hub for Central and South American import and export business grew quickly with an explosion of commercial warehousing development speared by The Codina Group in such projects as Airport West providing millions of square feet of space for cargo storage and transfers. At the same time, importation of flowers became a major industry, attracting a new employment base and heightened cargo transports. (Part 3 to conclude next month)

Humberto Benitez Works on Display at MDC West In collaboration with the City of Doral and the city’s Chamber of Arts and Culture, of the City of Doral, Miami Dade College (MDC) West is presenting an exhibition of Humberto Benitez’s work beginning Friday, Oct. 22 through November 12. “Social Fridayâ€? trolley riders attended the exhibition opening at 8:30 p.m. on October 22 for the initial viewing of the display, entitled “Our Identity.â€? “MDC West is proud to continue presenting artistic and cultural activities for the community in collaboration with the City of Doral,â€? said Dr. JosĂŠ A. Vicente, MDC West President. Benitez’s work is presented in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Born in the town of Guanajay in Cuba’s province of Pinar del Rio, he began painting as a child with red clay soil and charcoal, opening a new world of shades and blending techniques. Today, his vibrant creations have been acquired by international corporations and private collectors. His art appears in many forms, including art painted on instruments, murals in a luxurious cruise ship and Mangos Tropical CafĂŠ, art for magazines and official festival posters, and much more. In addition, Benitez is a percussionist who plays bongos and triple congas. The West Gallery, 3800 NW 115th Avenue, was the first stop in the October 22 trolley tour that included area hotels, restaurants and entertainment venues as part of the weekly “Social Fridays.â€?

Foundation Hosts Seminar To Reduce Feline Numbers BY YELANY RODRIGUEZ
While most of us love them, an overpopulation of strays and feral cats created a free seminar hosted October 16 by the Octavio Feline Foundation – all to train lay folks how to effectively trap, neuter and return the untamed to an appropriate abode. The class took place at Miami-Dade Animal Services, 7401 NW 74 Street where guests learned tips and tricks from Silvia M. Valles, President and Founder of the
Tools of the neutering trade at seminar
Octavio Feline Foundation, a non-profit organization created to help control cat overpopulation. Valles lectured on “TNR” (Trap, Neuter, and Return), a program that provides low cost medical care for cat caretakers and educates the public about the importance of spaying/neutering their pets. “There are several low-cost spay/neuter clinics/programs in our community but not many people are able bring cats in, not because they don't want to do it but basically because they don't know how to do it,” said Valles. Seminar-educated cat lovers were told the step-by-step instructions of a successful TNR, beginning with the trapping of feral cats with humane traps. Captured cats are next taken (in the trap) to a veterinary clinic for sterilization (castration of males, called ‘neutering’) and ovariohysterectomy (removal of ovaries and uterus) of females, called ‘spaying.’ After the procedure, cats are marked so that they can be easily identified as a sterilized feral, usually by cropping the pointed end of the left ear or cutting a notch at the

tip or on the side of the ear, instructed Valles, adding that “Outreach is imperative to Trap-Neuter-Return programs being successful. The community needs to know this program is available in order to take advantage of it.” Workshops, like the one held by Octavio Feline Foundation, are also a great place to
hear concerns from the community and work together to resolve any issues,” said Elizabeth Parowski, Communications Manager for “Alley Cat Allies.” With events like “National Feral Cat Day” and TNR 101 classes, cat advocates hope to transform and develop communities to protect and improve the lives of cats, she said.
