2010 City of Homestead Planning and Zoning Board BY ALYNA BELLO

The City of Homestead’s Planning and Zoning Board is an advisory committee to Mayor and Council that reviews and recommends plans and programs for the systematic growth and development of the City. It is the board members responsibility to take into consideration the health, safety, beautification, and welfare of the residents of Homestead. Part of their duties is to review capital improvement programs, comprehensive plan amendments for future land use, land development regulations, and rehabilitation of existing structures all designed to promote and improve the quality of life of the community. The majority of the City board must be Homestead residents and have resided within the City for a minimum of one year prior to their appointment to the board. Two members of the board may be non-residents who own a business located within Homestead city limits, which has been in operation for at least three years. The current board consists of seven, distinguished individuals who have professional backgrounds in architecture, building construction, engineering, and medicine. Mr. Edward Powell is a retired electrical engineer who has been actively involved in Homestead, serving as the Keys Gate Condo President for two years and graduated from the first Homestead’s Citizen Academy. Mr. Daniel Carter is currently a financial advisor for Morgan Stanley Smith Barney and has been a resident of Homestead since 1975. Mr. Carter is also a board member of the Kiwanis of

Homestead/South Dade and the Homestead Soup Kitchen. Mr. Ronald J. Dorris is the business owner of a full service architectural firm that has been located in Homestead for over 25 years. Dr. Jeffrey Raines is a retired faculty member of the University of Miami

Department of Surgery. He is a published author who did numerous studies and research in the field of Cardiovascular Diseases. Dr. Raines has been a Homestead resident for the past seven years. Mr. James Sutton a Homestead resident has over 33 years of professional experience in accounting, purchasing, and

contracting. He is the owner and operator of South Florida Audio Video and the Executive Director for the Everglades Association.

He currently supervises the construction progress of affordable homes by Workforce Development Partnership, Inc. Mr. James Harris owns Harris & Schroeder Builders, Inc. a full-service construction firm located in Homestead specializing in residential, commercial, and remodeling since 1960. Mr. Harris, a third generation builder has worked with his father most of his life and has been an

equal partner since 1987 and the sole owner since 1998. As vacancies occur, residents and the general public are encouraged to submit resumes and file applications for consideration. Once qualified candidates have applied the board members are appointed by the Mayor , subject to the approval of the City Council. Appointments are for two years or until the appointing Mayor leaves office, whichever occurs first. Monthly meetings are held the 2nd Wednesday of every month at 8:30 AM. Meetings are open to the public.

James Archer Smith Park Splash Pad –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– BY ALYNA BELLO

On Wednesday, September 1, 2010, the City of Homestead’s Parks and Recreation reopened the popular splash pad amenity at James Archer Smith Park located at 300 N.W. 12th Street, Homestead, FL 33030. For the past year the water park feature has been undergoing renovations to upgrade the structure and meet new state standards. The splash pad is made up of several ground nozzles that spray water upwards onto the deck, creating a fun play area with no standing water. James Archer Smith Park was officially opened last summer and offers multiple amenities to park patrons. Some of the amenities include a wider walking trail with updated exercise stations, a playground section, pavilions, benches, and two dog

park areas. The park was named after longtime, distinguished Homestead resident, Dr. James Archer Smith who dedicated over 50 years of service to the Homestead community. The new hours of operations for the splash pad will be weekdays from 4 p.m. to sunset and holiday and weekend hours will be from 10 a.m. to sunset. The splash pad is free for all patrons. For the safety and well-being of all guests, there are certain rules and regulations that must be followed when using the splash pad. No animals, food, or glass will be allowed on the deck or the splash pad. Only 10 guests will be allowed at one time on the splash pad and must be wearing bathing suit attire. Chelcee Washington Crowned As Miss Black Homestead Talented Teen USA 2011 BY ALYNA BELLO

Ms. Chelcee Washington was recently crowned as Miss Black Homestead Talented Teen USA 2011 and will be representing Homestead when she competes for the state title of Miss Black Florida Talented Teen USA 2011 this September. The Miss Black U.S.A. Pageant and Scholarship Foundation, Inc., coordinators of this event, are a community-driven organization committed to providing educational opportunities to outstanding young women of color and recognizing scholastic achievement. Chelcee is an outstanding young role model who believes in education and giving back to the community. She is an 11th grade student who has been attending Miami Palmetto Senior High School for the last two years. This Fall, she will be enrolled in the School for Advanced Studies program at Miami-Dade Community College, Homestead Campus and plans to major in Psychiatry. An ambitious and motivated student, she has been taking advanced placement classes and currently has a grade point average of 4.5. Chelcee is not only hitting the books hard, but is also a well-rounded student that participates in a variety of extracurricular activities. While attending Miami Palmetto Sr. High, she was actively involved in the First Priority Bible Club and was a member of the Palmetto Panthers JV cheerleading squad. She was also a member of the Women of Tomorrow (WOT) club of Palmetto. Her hobbies include cheerleading, dance, gymnastics, and singing; and she enjoys spending time with her friends after school and on the weekends. Chelcee comes from a family with deep roots within Homestead and at an early age learned the importance of giving back. Both of her maternal grandparents, Johnnie Ruth and the late Willie B. Brown, were pioneers and community activists for the Southwest

Community of Homestead. Mr. Brown initiated and coordinated the development of the

Homestead/Florida City Neighborhood Center and the construction of the Phichol Williams Community Center. He also formed the Haitian, Hispanic, African American Coalition and founded both the Annual African Heritage Festival and the Concerned Citizens Progressive Action. Mrs. Brown continues to volunteer through her local church, St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, to help the homeless and those in need, especially during the holidays. Homestead Mayor Steven Bateman wanted to congratulate this bright young lady for all of the accomplishments she has achieved both in and outside of the classroom. Mayor Bateman stated, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Miss Washington is an inspiration to those around her. The City supports her as she pursues this endeavor and we hope that Chelcee brings home the crown. Homestead City Council STEVEN N C.. BATEMAN,, MAYOR Steve Bateman was elected Mayor of the City of Homestead on November 3, 2009 for a two-year term. He is no stranger to Homestead politics and previously served a two-year term as Vice Mayor in 1995 and served as a Councilman from 1997-2004. Prior to his service on the City of Homestead Council, he was Chairman of the City’s Planning and Zoning Board and served on the City’s Code Enforcement Board. Mayor Bateman was born in Miami, FL and moved with his family to Homestead in 1966. He attended Homestead Middle School, South Dade High School and Miami Dade College. Mayor Bateman is the owner and President of Two Brothers Construction, Inc. located in Homestead and has been in business for over 30 years. Mayor Bateman is very active in the community. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Greater Homestead/Florida City Chamber of Commerce, was Chair of the Chamber’s Military Affairs Committee and has been an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Homestead/South Dade since 1982. His civic awards include being named Kiwanian of the year and being awarded a Key to the City in February 2004 for his dedicated service as a public official to the citizens of Homestead. Mayor Bateman and his wife, Donna, have one son, Austin. JUDY Y WALDMAN,, VICE E MAYOR Judy Waldman was first elected to the City Council in November 2001. She was re-elected for an additional 4-year term in November 2005. In November 2009, she was elected Vice Mayor for a two-year term. She is currently holding Council Seat #6. Vice Mayor Waldman grew up in Homestead and graduated from South Dade High School. She attended Miami-Dade College and completed several business courses from the University of Miami. Vice Mayor Waldman is a fulltime licensed Realtor-Associate with Prudential WCI Realty and owns and operates a mortgage investment company. Vice Mayor Waldman is very active in the community and has assisted in fund-raising efforts for many worthwhile organizations. She and her husband, Merv, founded the Little Angels Foundation and she also serves as the Chair of the Board. The awards she has received include the Chamber of Commerce Volunteer of the Year and Athena Awards, the American Business Women’s Association Woman of the Year Award and the In the Company of Women honored her as a 2005 Pioneer. Vice Mayor Waldman and her husband, Merv, have one son and two grandchildren. JON N BURGESS,, COUNCILMAN Jon Burgess was elected to a 4-year term as Councilman of the City of Homestead during the November 2007 election. He holds council seat #2. He attended Western Carolina University. He has lived in South Florida for eighteen years and has called Homestead his home the past nine years. He and his wife, Charelle, have one son, who is two years old. Councilman Burgess has been a professional Coast Guard Certified Boat Captain for nearly 20 years and currently works out of Key Largo. He previously served on the City’s Charter Review Committee and the Eastlake Advisory Committee. WENDY Y LOBOS,, COUNCILWOMAN Wendy Lobos was elected to City Council on November 7, 2007 and along with Councilwoman Nazy Sierra is serving as the first Hispanic women to be elected in the City of Homestead. She was born in Guatemala and lived there until the age of 7. She grew up in Los Angeles, California, attended high school in New York City, and holds a BA in Political Science and Spanish Literature from the State University of New York in Cortland. She also holds a Masters of Business Administration from NSU and is a Continuing Certified Credit Compliance Professional C4P. In 2001, at the age of 26, she chose to settle down and make Homestead home. Outside of the City Council, Councilwoman Lobos is self-employed and works as a financial consultant to different businesses. Her field of expertise is special districts and affordable housing programs. She is also a member of New Beginnings Christian Fellowship where she volunteers as the Church Treasurer.

Councilwoman Lobos lives in the Villages of Homestead, representing District 3. On City Council, she is the Liaison to ArtSouth and the Fire Pension Board. In 2009, School Board Member Dr. Larry Feldman appointed Councilwoman Lobos to the Miami-Dade School Board Audit Committee. She is a proud graduate of both the basic and advanced Institute of Newly Elected Officials sponsored by the Florida League of Cities. She also completed the Newly Elected Officials Boot Camp, a program sponsored by the National Association of Latino Elected Officials. Councilwoman Lobos is a proud mom to an excellent student and football player who attended Air Base Elementary School and is now a student at Herbert Ammons Middle School. ELVIS S R.. MALDONADO,, COUNCILMAN Elvis Maldonado was elected to a 4-year term as Councilman of Homestead during the November 2009 election. Elvis Maldonado was raised in Homestead since the age of 5. From playing little league baseball, to surviving Hurricane Andrew; the 36 year-old Husband and father of two can attribute many of his memories to our city. As a proven leader in the community, Elvis has been extremely proactive throughout the City of Homestead. His involvement includes education work as an Outreach Counselor with Aspira South Charter School, Homestead Senior High School and Homestead Middle School. Elvis’s involvement includes being a member if the Homestead City Charter Review, being the Chair of the CDD (Community Development District) and President of the Homeowners Association of his community Malibu Bay. As councilman who comes with a diverse leadership background and endeavors, Elvis currently chairs the Homestead Education Committee, Technology and Arts Committee and Business Development Committee. He graduated from Florida Computer and Business Collage in 1998, and in 2007, opened E.R. Techs, A full-service computer technology company, located in Homestead. Outside of serving the Homestead community, Elvis gives back to pre-teens and youth at Alpha and Omega Church by providing real life skills and mentorship. Elvis enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters. STEPHEN N R.. SHELLEY,, COUNCILMAN Councilman Stephen Shelley was elected on November 3, 2009 to represent Council Seat #1, the Northwest Neighborhood Councilman Shelley has been a resident of Homestead since 2004. He was born in Athens, Georgia but spent most of his youth on the west coast of Florida growing up in Largo, Florida. Councilman Shelley obtained a bachelors degree in Business and Economics from the University of Florida and a Juris Doctorate in the field of law from Barry University, completing his last year of legal studies at the University of Miami. Soon after graduating law school in August of 2006, Councilman Shelley opened his own law practice in Downtown Homestead, the Law Office of Stephen R. Shelley, PLLC. Prior to running for City Council, Councilman Shelley was a member of the City of Homestead’s Planning and Zoning Board. He was appointed as a board member in 2005 and in 2009 was promoted to the Vice Chairman of the City’s Planning and Zoning Board Councilman Shelley is also a newlywed. He married his wife, Jenn, in October of 2009 and they soon hope to raise a family in the City of Homestead. Councilman Shelley is also involved in local community activities and associations He is on the Board of Directors and is the treasurer of the Youth Fishing Foundation, a local not for profit 501(c)(3) organization. He sits on the St. Johns School Board and is a member of the Homestead/Florida City Chamber of Commerce in addition to donating his time and pro bono legal services to other local not for profits. Councilman Shelley also sits on the Board for the annual City of Miami Fishing Tournament with the proceeds from the tournament benefiting local children in Miami and South Dade. In 2009, Councilman Shelley created and implemented a youth scholarship program for college bound students, giving away five (5) $1,000 scholarships. The City of Miami Fishing Tournament generated the monies to fund the scholarships. Lastly, Councilman Shelley is an avid outdoorsman who loves to fish, camp and photograph nature.

City of Homestead Mayor Steven Bateman, Vice-Mayor Judy Waldman, and City Council leaders along with the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) staff presented nine families close to $100,000 in grant money to improve their homes. The goals of these programs are to improve the quality of life for homeowners and residents, bring properties up to current building code, improve and upgrade the appearance of the area, and facilitate and encourage redevelopment activity in the area. The Residential and Landscaping Grant Programs were developed to provide low and moderate Income, singlefamily residents with the financial assistance needed to make necessary home improvements and enhance the appearance of their houses. The Residential grant program was divided into two categories, the Emergency Home Repair Grant and the Residential Façade Improvement Grant. Qualified applicants can be provided up to $10,000 per residence. Through the Emergency Home Repair Grant funding is provided for emergency repairs in order to make their home a safe, secure, and sanitary place. By creating this program it has allowed Homestead residents to be able to bring their properties up to current building codes, to improve the well-being of the homeowners, preserve the quality of the neighborhoods, and maintain property values. The other

Residential Façade Improvement Grant is for the improvement of the exterior portion of the residence. Some of these improvements are: exterior painting (exterior paint colors shall be from the approved City of Homestead color palette), exterior door or window replacement, installation of a privacy fence and minor landscaping improvements. Through the Landscape grant, residents will be able to receive up to $5,000 to assist in the installation or improvement of their landscaping. The program will not reimburse an owner for work previously done, already underway, or work with a current permit. All improvements must comply with the City of Homestead’s Landscape Code and must be maintained in accordance with the City’s landscaping maintenance standards. All three grants are limited to one time per residence for the life of the program, require no matching funds, and do not need to be paid back. Out of the three, qualified applicants can only receive two grants, one residential and one landscaping. The grant funding is available on a “first come, first qualified, first served” basis. City of Homestead hires new CRA Director BY ALYNA BELLO

After months of interviewing qualified applicants, the City of Homestead has selected Mr. Jordan W. Leonard as Director of its Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA). The CRA is responsible for the revitalization of the Community Redevelopment Area, a specific area within Homestead city limits. This department implements strategies and programs to promote community development and undertake projects that enhance both residential and commercial property values. Mr. Leonard, a native Floridian, has over ten years of political, economic, and governmental experience within the South Florida area. With public sector posts in the Florida House of Representatives, MiamiDade County’s Task Force on Urban Economic Revitalization and several local municipalities including the Village of El Portal and the City of Opa-locka, Mr. Leonard has earned a positive reputation for implementing new programs and accomplishing difficult tasks, such as the Red Light Camera Program and lowering water and sewer rates for residents. In addition to working in government, Mr. Leonard has also worked for two Fortune 50 companies in the financial services sector and currently holds three securities licenses. Within the community, Mr. Leonard has volunteered his time by serving on numerous boards, committee’s and organizations. Mr. Leonard also currently serves as a Councilman in the Town of Bay Harbor Islands. Mr. Leonard has a Bachelors of Science degree in political science and history from Florida State University. City of Homestead Awarded Distinguished Budget Presentation Award BY FRANK MAY

The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) based out of Chicago, Illinois recently awarded the City of Homestead the GFOA’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its 20092010 Annual Operating and Capital budget. This is the second, consecutive year that the City of Homestead receives this award and represents a significant achievement. It reflects the commitment of the Mayor, City Council, and staff to meet the highest principals of governmental budgeting. In order for the City to receive this budget award, employees had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. The guidelines are created to evaluate how well an entity’s budget serves as: policy document, financial plan, operations guide, and communications device. Budget documents must be rated “proficient” in all four categories, and the fourteen mandatory criteria within those categories, to receive this award. When a distinguished Budget Presentation Award is granted, a Certificate of Recognition for Budget Presentation is also presented to the individual or departments as being primarily responsible for having achieved this award. This has been presented to

Located on the Art South campus in Homestead, Atala offers an arts-based Montessori curriculum. More than 240 persons attended the event. The unique curriculum of Atala Montessori has attracted numerous students, especially in light of public schools closing music, art, and drama departments nationwide. “As a co-founder and a grandparent of an Atala student, I am proud of the richness of the program we are offering. We have experienced artists onboard to teach various art forms in all of our classrooms, and all this is in addition to our traditional Montessori education,” says Lower Elementary Director Patricia Howarth, who has been a Montessori teacher for over 30 years. Atala Montessori serves children from

18 months of age through 6th grade. In addition to a traditional Montessori education, the curriculum includes art, music, computers, science, agriculture, and physical education, a Spanish immersion classroom, and a wide variety of after-school activities including guitar lessons, singing, painting, drama, and martial arts. BY ALYNA BELLO On Tuesday, August 03, 2010, Councilman Jimmie L. Williams, the Homestead Police Department, and the South Dade Weed and Seed organization along with local residents joined communities from around the nation to participate in the “27th Annual National Night Out” (NNO) campaign. NNO is a unique crime/drug prevention event that brings together residents, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials to focus on crime awareness and strengthen police-community partnerships. Homestead residents wanted to send a message to criminals letting them know that the community is proactive, organized, and fighting back. This year’s theme was “Let’s Give Crime a Going Away Party.” Organizers began with a rally at Roby George Park and both guest speakers, Councilman Williams and Homestead Police Captain Angela Washington, stressed the importance of community involvement. Councilman Williams stated, “If we do not take a stand, we will fall for anything. We need to take back what is ours, which is

our community. We need your help, without it we cannot do this. We must give our support to our law enforcement officers and build a partnership between the community and the police. Homestead resident Phyllis Horn suggested creating a neighborhood crime watch in the Southwest section to get residents to be vigilant and involved in making their neighborhood a safer area for their children. Ms. Horn explained, “It’s not about being a snitch, but your brother’s keeper.” Over 35 parents and students marched with police officers throughout their neighborhood holding signs and blowing whistles. The Homestead Police Department’s Community Policing and K-9 Units were giving out information, answering questions, and interacting with the crowd. Throughout the years, NNO has proven to be an effective, inexpensive and enjoyable program to generate support and participation in local anticrime programs. The City of Homestead and the Homestead Police Department are committed to providing a safe environment, free of crime and drug use, for law-abiding citizens to live, work, and raise their families.

City of Homestead officials help local organizations prepare students in need for the upcoming school year BY ALYNA BELLO Homestead City leaders came together to show their support and help local organizations in their efforts to get underprivileged students ready for the new school year. On Friday, August 6, 2010, City of Homestead Councilman and Education Chair Elvis Maldonado joined forces with the Start Off Smart and Weed and Seed organizations to get students ready for the new school year. Families lined up at the Phichol Williams Center to receive colorful backpacks filled with essential school supplies. Backpacks were divided into two categories for elementary and high school students. The Homestead Education Committee donated backpacks and school supplies such as paper, folders, pens, pencils. Over 200 backpacks were donated by the Children’s Trust and with the help of grant money and donations an additional 700 backpacks were purchased. In total, over 900 book bags were given to students. Councilman Maldonado stated, “It’s great to see these students will be able to start off the year with the tools they need and not

Mayor Steven Bateman and Vice-Mayor Judy Waldman donated essential school supplies to be included in the backpacks. ViceMayor Waldman and Councilman Maldonado attended the event. Over 400 children received backpacks, school supplies, and stuffed animals. At the end of the two backpack giveaways, Cipriano Garza, Executive Director of the Title I Migrant Education Program, thanked Mayor and Council and volunteers that came to help and were committed to making this a successful event. One of the migrant parents emotionally thanked the organizers and volunteers for such a wonderful experience. Vice-Mayor Judy Waldman stated, “The services that are being provided by Kids 4 Kids and the Migrant Education Program will leave a lasting imprint on these children and their families. Public School System Opens Homestead Medical Academy for Science and Technology (MAST) BY FRANK MAY

The Miami-Dade Public School System has created an extraordinary medical magnet school opportunity for incoming 9th graders for the 2010 school year. The Gateway Environmental K-8 Learning Center will be the temporary site of Miami-Dade County Public School System’s MAST @ Homestead Medical Magnet school. The program’s eventual home in 2011 will be the old Homestead Hospital which will undergo substantial renovation to accept the new program and its participants. MAST, an acronym for Medical Academy for Science and Technology, is a full magnet school offering three advanced biomedical, pharmaceutical services, and physical therapy strands; preparing students for those high-demand careers. The Biomedical strand will be available in the 2011school year. Students will participate in an interdisciplinary approach to medical/health science, technology, mathemat-

ics and language arts. Students will enroll in college-level courses through a dualenrollment program and will participate in internships with medical/healthcare professionals in their chosen strand. The program’s ultimate goal is to prepare students for the eventual transition from school to work. Applications are currently being accepted for incoming 9th-grade students. We were told that the nose would be fine, but she still has a bump that she did not have before. What should we do? Alex

Dear Alex, Most hits to the nose do not result in a permanent injury. Of those that do, most involve a fracture of the nasal bones. This is usually treated with what is called a closed reduction of the frac-

ture. This is essentially putting the bone back in place, and can sometimes be done in the office under local anesthesia. Occasionally, even though there is no bone fracture, a small Photo by Ella Woodson bump can develop on the bridge. This is basically a bony callus that forms on the nasal bones. My recommendation is to observe it for at least two months. If it does not resolve by then, she will need surgery if she wants the bump gone.

City of Hire Head Hunter for City Manager Search BY ALYNA BELLO

The City of Homestead will hire a head hunter to select their next City Manager after the resignation of former City Manager Sergio Purrinos. Julio Brea is Acting City Manager until a permanent City Manager is hired. Vice Mayor Judy Waldman, Management Review Committee Chairperson, is coordinating the effort to recruit and select the new City Manager. Mrs. Waldman believes that a formal selection process including the engagement of a head hunter is the best way to proceed. “There is a great deal of interest in the City Manager position. A formal and arms length recruitment process conducted by a consultant will ensure the highest quality applicants for the City. I expect a short list of three to five applicants from which the City Council will choose,” said Waldman. The firm that the City will be using, Colin Baenziger & Associates, was highly recommended and has great experience in public sector executive personnel recruitment. The cost for the head hunter’s activities will be $21,000. “I consider the head hunter’s fee as money well spent. Homestead is a small City. We simply don’t have the in-house resources to properly handle this,” said Waldman. According to the consultant’s timetable the new City Manager will be selected on

or about December 6th. Vice Mayor Waldman wants the recruitment fast-tracked and a City Manager on the ground as soon as possible. “I want the Council to hire a new City Manager before the end of the year,” said Waldman.

Sir Pizza adds new locations in South Florida BY LEE STEPHENS

The Sir Pizza restaurant chain is planning to open 20 new locations in South Florida in the next 18 months. The Miami-based company, which already has locations in Key Biscayne, Coral Gables, Pinecrest and Sunset, recently opened the first restaurant in the expansion plan, a West Kendall eatery at 12562 SW 120th St. operated under franchise agreement by Ernesto Fernandez and Marcelo Chopa. Later this month, Sir Pizza will open its first Broward County outlet with a restaurant in Coral Springs at the Walk Shopping Center on University Drive. Veteran restaurateur Rene Prats, the Sir Pizza South Florida CEO and franchisor, said the new restaurants mark the first phase of an expansion program that will see the company open 20 restaurants in Miami-Dade and Broward by the end of 2011. He said future Sir Pizza locations are planned for Aventura, Davie, Doral, downtown and midtown Miami, Flagler

Street, Hialeah, Homestead, Miramar, North Miami Beach, Palmetto Bay, Pembroke Pines, South Beach, West Dade and Weston. “Sir Pizza has long been known as a destination for family fun that offers ‘good to the very edge’ pizza, subs, salads, pastas, chicken wings and desserts,” said Prats. “We look forward to serving our guests a great dining experience.” Agustin and Betty Duarte opened a Sir Pizza restaurant in Coral Gables after being culinary fans of the original Sir Pizza on Key Biscayne. The Coral Gables restaurant was an immediate success and locations in Pinecrest and on Sunset Drive quickly followed. I did not grow up being a Gator. In truth, I was a Buckeye who hailed from the border town of Toledo, OH. My childhood was typically Midwestern and one weekend each November, friendships and family relationships were put aside for college football and a rivalry for the ages — Woody Hayes’ Ohio State Buckeyes versus Bo Schembechler’s Michigan Wolverines. Today, the last weekend in November means a very different type of rivalry, one that I have personally experienced many times since over I first became a Gator. At times, the final outcome of these games resulted in extreme bliss, while others ended with months-long despair. I first became a Gator when I went to summer orientation in Gainesville in July 1986. I had just graduated from Eau Gallie High School in Melbourne, FL, and had applied to attend only one school — the University of Florida. At the time, this choice had more to do with where my friends were going to school than my own desire to attend UF. Little did I know that the two-day break from my summer job at Little Ceasar’s Pizza would change my life and my view of the world forever. I had never set foot on a college campus as impressive and majestic as UF, and memories of that moment still come flooding back today as if it just happened moments ago. My arrival in the fall of 1986 as a newly minted freshman at Hume Hall was just the beginning of my love affair with my alma

mater. I was reminded on a daily basis that my growing passion for UF was a mixture of many things: dedicated faculty, opportunities for involvement, game days, passionate peers, food at all hours of the day and night, and the good old orange and blue, tried and true. It did not take long to know that my experience as a Gator would transcend my own expectations and lead me higher and farther than I ever hoped. My education prepared me well enough that I am comfortable in both the boardroom and the classroom. There is no challenge too great that I cannot rise up to and face head on. There are no obstacles too great. My UF education has given me this confidence and I am eternally grateful. And so, that is why I choose to give back in a meaningful way. I show my loyalty through my life membership and involvement in the University of Florida Alumni Association, by making a financial gift to my alma mater, and by reminding all who I come into contact with in my role as Coral Gables Chamber president and community leader that I am a loyal Gator. This year, I am proud to serve as president of the University of Florida Alumni Association, representing 350,000 loyal Gators around the globe. Collectively known as the Gator Nation, this group of dedicated alumni represents the finest graduates any university could ever offer. It is an honor and privilege to serve as their leader. You can save on those monthly car payments Al Sunshine CBS MONEY WATCH Record low interest rates may be boosting mortgage refinancing, but it turns out that those low rates can help you lower your monthly car payments too. Josh Mungavin told me that he just cut his monthly car payments by about $41 a month. “Money’s cheap now at the banks,” he said. “It’s a perfect time to consider refinancing your car.” The Evensky & Katz financial planner was paying $242 a month on his car, but he recently found cheaper rates on the Internet at the Pentagon Credit Union. As a result, he was able to get a new loan and cut his payments down to about $200 with a new interest rate under 3 percent. “I read a lot of financial blogs and look for deals,” Mungavin said. “I found the Pentagon Credit Union offering 2.99 percent auto loans, which is the cheapest I could find on the market.” I took a look at the numbers. One prospective shopper was three years into a five-year loan that she took out at 8 pecent. She still owed $16,600, and she’s currently paying about $499 a month. She just found a 6.5 percent loan, which she could extend for another five years and end up paying just $346 monthly. But the extra term of the loan would add another $2,800 to her final costs. And that’s something most lenders won’t tell you unless you run the numbers yourself.

And that’s the problem. While finding cheaper auto loans may sound good at first, you still have to be careful about extra fees or extended terms. Unlike a home mortgage, financial planners say as long as you don’t have to pay anything up front, cutting your interest rates by just a point or two can save big bucks on auto loans. “There really isn’t a threshold of how many points you should save on interest rates,” Josh added. “Just be careful about extending the payments when applying for a new loan.” Financial planner Charles Sachs has another money-saving tip that should also be considered. He suggests considering the lowest monthly payment you can find, even if means extending the terms of the loan to several more years. But he says you can beat the bank by still paying your original loan payments. In other words, you should try to pay down your loan as much as possible each month. That way, you’ll still have the ability to just pay the minimum payment if you need to. By paying a little extra each month, you’ll not only pay off your loan sooner, but you’ll also cut the amount of money the bank earns on your interest payments, and cut your overall financing costs at the same time. Don’t forget — you not only want to look for the cheapest rates, but you also want to ask about any extra re-financing fees you may be charged up front. Also be careful not to pay anything extra before being assured in writing that you actually qualify for a new loan.

It was a sea of red and white, the school colors, as old friends reunited, reminisced, laughed and recalled memories of a time when life was much easier. Many members of the undefeated football team were on hand for the

event, including class president Shelby Lee and vice president Joe Taylor, the quarterback and fullback of the State Championship team.
