iami-Dade Park and Recreation’s Leisure Access Services is hosting the Sixth Annual Family Festival of Arts and Games for children of all abilities, on Saturday, Feb. 28, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Kendall Indian Hammocks Park, 11395 SW 79 St. (near Shelters Nos. 3-5). The free one-day festival will provide children and their families with an opportunity to interact, have fun and experience creative expression through a variety of activities. There will be live musical entertainment by local children’s groups including the Greater Miami Youth Symphony, American Children’s Orchestra, Belen Jazz Band, School of Rock Band and more. Other entertainment provided throughout the day includes puppet shows by RAICES Hispanic Heritage Cultural Arts Center, and dramatizations by local groups such as Creative Children’s Therapy and Miami-Dade Park and Recreation Department’s Leisure Access program participants. The festival also will feature a variety of accessible games and sports, such as sack races, wheelchair and walker races, walk/run races, bicycling, athletic games, carnival booth games, and hulahoop, to name a few. Hammocks District police officer recognized for valor, lifesaving BY SANDRA G. KRAMER The Miami-Dade Police Department has announced that Officer Thomas Kennedy has been awarded the departmental Bronze Medal of Valor and Lifesaving Awards, and selected Distinguished Officer of the Month for February 2009. Officer Kennedy has been a member of the department since 1995, and is assigned to the Hammocks District. On Nov. 7, 2008, at 10:56 a.m., Officer Kennedy was dispatched to 8745 SW 152 Ave. in reference to a female who had been shot. Upon arrival, he found the front door to the residence unlocked and, upon cracking open the door, found Carolina Deoleo lying on the floor in a pool of blood. Officer Kennedy called to her and she said that her husband had shot her. In response

to Officer Kennedy’s query as to her husband’s whereabouts, she said, “He is upstairs.” After assessing the situation, Officer Kennedy entered the residence and dragged Ms. Deoleo to safety. He then took a tactical position between the front door and Ms. Deoleo, and administered first aid until it was safe for Fire Rescue to remove her. Backup Officers Juan Aenlle, Carlos Rodriguez and Raymond Hernandez arrived and took a tactical position behind Officer Kennedy. Noticing children’s pictures on the wall and fearing that there might be additional victims inside, Officer Kennedy re-entered the home with Officers Aenlle, Rodriguez, and Hernandez. They located the subject in the master bathroom, deceased due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Tire Kingdom and Uniroyal Tire support local soccer program BY KRISTY KENNEDY Tire Kingdom and Uniroyal Tire have raised donations of over $1,228 in both funds and equipment for KendallHammocks Soccer. This is thanks to the Uniroyal Soccer Program, a grassroots initiative that annually supports youth soccer all over the country. The program has been a major supporter of youth soccer for the past nine years. Alongside its tire dealers, Uniroyal Tire has donated nearly $11 million in funds, including over 818,000 soccer balls, since 2000. “We were excited to be a part of the soccer program,” said Jose David, store manager of Tire Kingdom in Kendall, 6500 SW 117 Ave. “It’s been a great way to do our part for the community. “It’s a wonderful feeling to support our youth, especially through an organization such as Kendall-Hammocks Soccer. I love seeing everyone who comes in, and the kids are ecstatic when they get the soccer ball,” he added. “We started this program to give some-

As an example, attorney Ronald P. Romeo, who counsels clients on copyright and patents, joined Andrea T. Grant, senior vice president at Executive National Bank on N. Kendall Drive, to relate service specialties at a Feb. 18 session. “I’m an attorney who makes house calls,” Romeo emphasized. “I like to visit clients where they prefer to meet.” Grant, commercial relationship manager, described the newest wrinkles in remote computerized deposit capabilities to eliminate back-and-forth trips to a banking branch. Completing her psychology degree in less than three years, Soccaras “Googled” and boldly wrote five top public relations agencies in South Florida seeking an internship. “The Edelman company, one of the best agencies in the world, gave me the chance to work in public relations for five months,” she said. Now, two years later, she handles public affairs projects for another topnotch Miami firm. Born in the U.S. of Cuban heritage, she grew up near the Lakes of the Meadow, attending Howard Doolin Middle School and G. Holmes Braddock Senior High. Her father, Agustin, and brother, Osvany, 32, are both employed by the county’s Department of Environmental Resources Management (DERM) while her mom, Anna, is a social researcher in South Florida for the University of Michigan. The family now lives in the

Lago Mar area of Kendall. Transferring her early interest in teaching to sociology and then public affairs now seems to be a natural progression, Sarah said. “It all gets back to enjoying working with people. At first, I thought I wanted to be a teacher, then turned to sociology. “After graduation, I attended Salamanca University, northwest of Madrid, the oldest University in Spain. With communications majors from FIU and UM as my classmates, public relations grew very strong with me as a new career. “I thought the Australian post sounded like the perfect opportunity,” she declared. “I first thought of going to Canada, but that’s too cold, and I’ve been dreaming of living in Australia for over a year — maybe because it’s so far away and uniquely different. “Then, when this contest presented itself, it seemed too good to be true,” she added, writing her own press release titled “Miami Local Applies for Best Job in the World.” “That’s exactly what I put in my contest video entry,” she said. “I’ve a passion for being an adventurous person who needs to experience the most from life.”

Does CSX Rail have a role to play in Kendall roadways? Michael Miller EXECUTIVE EDITOR

AROUND TOWN The MDX (Miami-Dade Expressway Authority) is exploring creation of new transportation corridors that could be designated for a future expansion of SR 836 (Dolphin Expressway). One parallels the CSX freight route extending from West Dade rock pits east to the southerly side of Miami International Airport. By using its right-of-way, the door could open for extension of SR 836 all the way to Krome Avenue and south to a point near Metrozoo which would help break grid locking traffic patterns stifling ordinary travel throughout the southwest area. Says one knowledgeable observer: “It’s all a ploy to play into the hands of Lennar and other big developers who want to break the UDB in southwest Dade. Watch how the Commission handles the next vote on Parkland!” CSX Rail system continues to be a factor along the west side of SR 874 (Shula Expressway) where construction is underway to expand the Killian Parkway interchange (SW 104th Street). Folks in that area are awaiting word to see if a buffer for their back yards can be erected on the adjoining CSX right-of-way to reduce traffic grit, noise, and pollution, much like new 12-foot walls will protect east side homeowners.

Many would like to see the CSX discontinue service on one of its lightlyused southwestern freight lines to help into chart a course for expressway building and managed bus routes that would not create high-cost land takings nor create new safety hazards. Palmetto X-way widening in the Bird Road area continues to be a hot potato with the Miller-Sunset Homeowners Association meeting with Florida Department of Transportation honchos to iron out differences over the ineffectiveness of a proposed 5’9” fence as a backyard barrier that would do little to screen the neighborhoods from traffic. FDOT officials have advised residents to view the area of Florida Turnpike parallel to SW 118th Avenue, ending at Kendall Regional Hospital, as a potential solution. Real estate price-watching discloses a 102-acre tract fronting portions of the south side of Kendall Drive, east from the Krome intersection. Asking price is $13 million (or $2.93 per square foot). To our knowledge, that’s the last major undeveloped parcel of land on the south side of Kendall Drive, west of Old Cutler Road. How time (and territory) flies! Commissioner brings some sense to stadium financing R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY Feb. 13 was to be the final vote approving the building of a baseball stadium for Jeffrey Loria, millionaire owner of the Florida Marlins. Miami City Commissioner Marc Sarnoff injected some common sense into the commission meeting when he made a simple statement and asked an even simpler question. If the building of a stadium will materially increase the value of the team franchise, shouldn’t both the City of Miami and Miami-Dade County have some financial guarantee that if the franchise is sold, at an enhanced profit, the city and the county would get their money back? A baseball franchise without a stadium of its own, without all the fringe benefits, has one value. A franchise with the ability to profit from sky boxes, restaurants, naming rights, etc. will have a far greater value.

Commissioner Sarnoff’s logic is simple. If taxpayer money will make the franchise more valuable, then the taxpayer should benefit if the team is ever sold. I can’t remember anyone bringing up that thought before. It is so simple, it is so logical; not one penny of taxpayer money should go into financing the ballpark without Sarnoff’s proposed guarantees. Sarnoff said if the City of Miami spends $94 million building a parking garage for the team, and this increases the value of the franchise, he wants the city to get its money back if the franchise is sold. I like that! Obviously, that concept should be expanded to cover the taxpayers’ dollars that the county, ever so generous, is just dying to give to the Marlins franchise’s owner. Of course, the question should be expanded to ask: If the baseball franchise is so financially enhanced, why isn’t the ballpark being financed by Loria, instead of our financially strapped community? That way, he wouldn’t have to share the profits at a future date. Sarnoff is being made out to look like the “bad guy” in the whole proposition.

VIEWPOINT Stadium supporters ask, “How dare Sarnoff suggest a contract modification at the last moment, a plan that was all but approved by our elected officials?” I ask, “Why was the final game plan designed by our county administrators, only provided the county and city commissioners two days before they were to vote?” After hours of wrangling, the Miami City Commission put off the “final” vote until Mar. 12. County commissioners sat in their offices all afternoon waiting to see what the city would do. Finally, as the sun set, they ended their vigil and went home. This gives opponents of the plan, those commissioners with common sense who feel that even if it’s logical to finance the stadium with taxpayer money, that this is not the time to do it. Commissioners must find a way to end this whole idea of

spending $1.9 billion of taxpayer money to finance a building for a privately owned, for profit, business. Interestingly, the Concert Association of Florida just filed for bankruptcy and is closing its doors as ticket sales are so poor that they can’t cover the cost of bringing an array of concerts to the community. What makes Jeffrey Loria, the few thousand loyal team fans and our elected officials think that there is sufficient discretionary money in the community to increase ticket sales with a new stadium?

Tax season: Need advice? Beware of tax prep scams

However, before you spend hundreds of dollars for high-priced tax advice, remember: there are IRS-certified volunteers ready to help. Unfortunately, tax season also is a season for fraud and tax scams. The Florida Attorney General’s Office is besieged by complaints about fraudulent tax preparers each year, along with the usual array of issues about identity theft and fraudulent charities. The attorney general advises consumers to ask about service fees up front and avoid tax preparers who claim they can obtain larger refunds than anyone else. “As tax season approaches and Floridians get ready to file for tax returns, scams begin to develop and con artists begin looking for ways to take

advantage of people,” said Attorney General Bill McCollum. Protect yourself from becoming a victim of fraud by educating yourself prior to preparing your taxes. To avoid being scammed by a non-legitimate tax preparer, consumers should get the credentials of the tax preparer and ask if he or she belongs to a state board or bar association that requires continuing education. The Attorney General’s Office also recommends that consumers shop around for quotes and ask tax preparers if they will represent consumers who are audited or pay any audit-related fees. Only attorneys, certified public accountants (CPAs) and enrolled agents can represent taxpayers before the IRS in any matter — including audits, collections and appeals. To avoid online tax scams never give out personal identification information to anyone who is soliciting money. Do not respond to emails asking for information relating to refunds. The IRS’s website is the only legitimate source for checking on refund status. To file complaints about tax-related scams and any other types of fraud, call the Attorney General’s Fraud Hotline at 1-866-966-7226, or file a complaint online at <www.myfloridalegal.com>.

Gulliver’s MS girls basketball team finishes perfect season BY BAY PROBY Gulliver’s Girls Middle School Basketball Team won 14 straight games en route to its second undefeated season in the past three years, making the 2008-09 accomplishment particularly noteworthy. “In what was supposed to be a transition year for the team — with only two starters returning — the season turned out to be very special,” said girls basketball coach Ebony Rhodes. “We want to thank the entire team for all of their hard work and their families for their support.” Gulliver opened the season with a dominating 30-13 victory at Key Largo School, a traditionally tough opponent. Gulliver beat Ransom, 27-23, in double overtime. “Ransom had beaten Gulliver both times last year, so the Gulliver team wanted this win in the worst way,“ said girls basketball coach Matt Telepman. “Ransom held a 14-9 lead with less than five seconds to play when Adrienne Cassel banked a three-pointer to send the game into overtime. Daniella Fuertes won the game in the second overtime when she rebounded her missed second foul shot jumper to seal one of the most intense and exciting games in Gulliver Girls Middle School Basketball history.” The team played its best basketball of the season in the SFMSC tournament, dominating Miami Country Day School, 36-11, and then defeating Ransom in the championship game, 31-13. Melanie Brooks was the tournament MVP and was joined by teammate Stephanie Rubin as All-Tournament team members. Ransom girls knew they could spoil Gulliver’s dreams of a perfect season with a win. The defensive battle was back and forth all game. With the score tied at 11-11, Melanie Brooks was fouled and went to the charity stripe for what would be her two most important foul shots of her young career. Brooks had shot just over 17 percent for the year from the foul line, but knocked down both shots, and the Raiders hung on for a 13-11 victory. Isa Granados, who did not join the team until the third game of the season, figured prominently in the team’s suc-

cess. She finished third in scoring. Granados was joined by Brooks, Campbell, Rubin and Cassel as three-year players for the team, having been members in the sixth and seventh grade as well. Cara and Tesi Zito, seventh grade twins, started several games together, contributing excellent defensive efforts. Other team members were eighth grader Brittany Schrager, seventh graders Meaghan Sylver and Emily Kirsner, and sixth graders Emily Deutsch, Claire Hebb, Madeline Fine and Rylee Hollub. THE CAPITAL, TALLAHASSEE, FEBRUARY 3, 2009 - A top official at the state Office of Insurance Regulation said Tuesday night that regulators believe the private insurance market could absorb potentially all of the 900,000-plus property insurance policies that would be shed if State Farm were allowed to pull out of Florida as it has proposed to do. State Farm has proposed a twoyear pull out, and company officials told a House Insurance Committee Tuesday that they couldn't say precisely what might be able to change the company's mind, given its precarious financial situation. The company was recently turned down by state regulators for a 47 percent rate increase and company officials told legislators that it can't bear any more losses in the property market in Florida, given the state's hurricane record, regulatory environment and a recent increase in the amount of discounts that customers can get for stormhardening their homes.

THE MIAMI HERALD, JANUARY 27, 2009 - Saying its finances are weakened, State Farm's Florida unit wants to get out of the business of property insurance in the state. The company, Florida’s largest private insurer of homes and condos with 1.2 million policies, wants to keep only auto insurance, it said in a statement. Other State Farm units would still sell life, health and other financial services, it said in a statement. Under State Farm’s proposal, it would phase out of the property insurance business over two years, giving existing customers time to find new coverage. If State Farm’s plan is approved by state insurance regulators, that means it will no longer write the full range of property policies, including homeowners, condo, renters, boaters, mobile home, business property, commercial liability and commercial marine. How to Select a Fitness Center BY JOE TALENT Everyone is different. People of different ages with different body types will require different fitness training and conditioning. Let your fitness goals guide your search. Before you select a gym, decide on your fitness goals. No one fitness club or piece of equipment is the perfect fit for every fitness need. Figure out what you need to work on. If your goal is maintaining healthy heart you may want to focus on aerobic fitness. If you are targeting that “magazine style” body you may want to focus on strength training or it may be just improving your tennis game. Look for a facility that will allow you to pursue your goal. If you want to focus on weight training, then you may not care whether a swimming pool is available. If you prefer to work out on exercise equipment, a wide assortment of exercise classes won’t be as important to you. Having your fitness level assessed by an exercise or medical professional also can help you decide what areas need work. He or she may be able to suggest specific activities that will help you, such as yoga or stretching classes to increase your flexibility. If you still aren’t sure of your fitness goals, consider joining an all-purpose facility with a large variety of classes and equipment to explore your exercise options. Keep these factors in mind as you sort through the options: Location: Is the health club or fitness center near your home or work? Choose a facility that isn’t too far out of the way of your daily activities. You’ll be less likely to make the excuse, “But it’s too far away.” Hours: Many fitness centers open early and close late to give early bird or late-night exercisers some flexibility. Check with the facility you’re looking into to make sure it will be open at the times you plan to exercise. Envir onment: Is the health club clean? Check out the equipment, floors and locker room. Also consider the overall atmosphere — is this somewhere you’ll enjoy spending time? Equipment: Does the facility have the equipment you’re interested in using? How much equipment is out of order? Too many “Out of order” signs might be a clue to poor maintenance. Does the facility offer activities and equipment suited for your unique health needs? For example, if you have arthritis, an aquatic aerobics class in an indoor or

You might also want to check with your local Better Business Bureau before entering into any contract with the club. Find out if any complaints have been registered against the facility. It’s up to you to follow through. It is not enough to join a gym. You must put in the work to reap the health benefits. Pop Art of Debbie Richman on exhibition at Alper JCC BY SHEILA STIEGLITZ The Futernick Family Art Gallery at the Alper JCC continues to provide a rich variety of exciting exhibits featuring local and national talent. On Thursday, Feb. 26, the center hosts an opening reception for the exhibit, “Debbie Richman: Pop Art – Judaic and Secular.” Richman is a Dallas artist whose signature style is defined by bold contrasting colors, unusual perspectives and design elements that create energy and excitement. “Most of my work integrates a single three-dimensional object into the composition providing a unique depth and ‘I Spy’ conversation,” Richman explained. The artist has been influenced

strongly by the colors used in Van Gogh’s paintings, the boldness of Jasper Johns’ compositions, and the Pop Art of Andy Warhol. Richman then reinterprets traditional Jewish holiday symbols and everyday themes in a Pop Art style and creates a unique, contemporary perspective that has strong graphic elements. The work of Debbie Richman has gained national recognition and is in private collections around the United States. The Miami Bach Society’s award-winning Tropical Baroque Music Festival, celebrating its 10th year, will take place beginning Feb. 28 and continue through Mar. 7 in venues throughout Coral Gables. This year, the event will feature musicians from Italy, Spain, Belgium, France, Germany and the United States. It also will include post-concert receptions given by three members of Miami’s consular corps, those of Spain, Italy and Germany as well the active participation of the consuls general of France and Belgium. The Miami Bach Society recently elected retired German diplomat Dr. Volker Anding as chair of its board of directors. His enthusiastic participation in the Society’s activities has focused attention on the diplomatic importance of culture in general and music in particular. Through a mutual appreciation of beauty, both visual and aural, cultural events bind countries together even when their political goals may differ. Anding — a cellist with the Alhambra Orchestra, a member of several not-forprofit boards of directors, as well as a consultant for European and South

American business organizations — has inspired community interest in the international importance of the arts in the South Florida. His experience as former German Ambassador both to Panama and Uruguay as well as Consul General here in Miami has proven invaluable not only to the Miami Bach Society but also to the Miami-Dade community at large. The international ensembles being welcomed by Dr. Anding and the Bach Society are Fuoco e Cenere of France, Jordi Savall and Ie Concert des Nations from Spain, Italy’s Zefiro, Oltremontano of Belgium, and the Thomas Gabriel Trio from Germany. They will be joined by the Miami Bach Society’s Chamber Orchestra and Ex Umbris of New York to complete the roster. Tickets range from $5 for college and graduate students, (those students 18 and under will be admitted free of charge) to $50 for preferred seating to the Jordi Savall performance. Mercedes-Benz SLK roadster restyled for 2009 Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS Mercedes-Benz designers, not wanting to spoil a good thing but apparently trying to improve on perfection, have given the popular SLK coupe/roadster a facelift for the 2009 model year. The SLK, with a retractable hardtop that goes up or down in just 22 seconds, has been given a re-designed front end, one with a stronger influence from the world of Formula 1 racing, and a revised rear apron that incorporates an air diffuser and unique trapezoidal exhaust pipes. In the cockpit, the SLK has newly designed chronometer-type gauges with aluminum accents, a new three-spoke steering wheel, revised climate control buttons and push-pull window controls. There are also features such as a new audio system with an in-dash six-disc CD/DVD changer and a Bluetooth interface that allows a cellular phone still in a

pocket or purse to be operated through the car’s audio system. The SLK is available with a new optional multimedia package that includes a Harmon/Kardon premium audio system, GPS navigation with a larger display, a voice control system, an SD memory card slot and a hard drive for storing music and GPS navigation maps. Forty-two percent of the SLK’s unibody is made of high-strength steel alloy and the entire body shell is zinc-coated for long-term corrosion protection. It also has a long-lasting scratch-resistant clearcoat paint job. Three models make up the 2009 SLK line, including the SLK300 powered by a 228 hp 3.0 liter V-6; the SLK350, this year with a 300 hp version of the popular 3.5-liter V-6, and the high-performance SLK55 AMG with a 355-hp V-8. Both the SLK300 and SLK350 use advanced V-6 engine technology that includes four valves per cylinder and variable valve timing. Other high-tech engine features include tumble flaps that increase gas mileage by creating more turbulence in the intake passages at part throttle. All three SLK models come with a new direct-steer system with a variable-ratio rack gearing that allows for impressive on-

center steering feel with even higher responsiveness beyond the first five degrees of steering angle. Direct steer minimizes steering during cornering and in low-speed maneuvers such as parking. The SLK350 can be ordered with a Sport package that includes AMG body styling, sport suspension, steering-wheel gearshift paddles and 18-inch AMG wheels. The Sport package includes AMG’s automatic “throttle-blipping” feature for virtually jolt-free downshifting,

which reduces load-change handling response, and for motorsports-minded drivers, improves braking before turn-in. Our test car for the week was the SLK350 (18/26 mpg) that had a base price of $49,950.
