Memories of early aviation relived at ‘Wings’ museum

he early days of modern flight were relived by two internationally known aviation aficionados during visits to a “Fly-In Weekend,” Oct. 28-29, hosted by the Wings Over Miami Museum at Kendall-Tamiami Executive Airport. Amanda Wright Lane, grandniece of aviation pioneers Wilbur and Orville Wright, flew from the Wrights’ legendary home in Dayton, OH, as part of a mission she has undertaken to help preserve the Wright name as the world’s originators of manned flight and Dayton as its birthplace. “It all started with my father, a grandson of Lorin, one of the four Wright brothers,” she explained. “After his passing in 1999, for some reason, I changed from a white-knuckler into a love of flying — and I wanted to see that my great-granduncles, Wilbur and Orville, would continue to

Construction underway for new MDC Kendall Campus building BY RICHARD YAGER

The first major addition to Miami-Dade College Kendall Campus in 15 years will serve as a central location for student services and a new home for the MDC Kendall School of Business Administration. Following a Feb. 18 groundbreaking, construction of the $31.8 million five-story building near the east campus entry got underway, May 2, on a one-acre site adjoining the campus’ tennis center. Dr. Lourdes Oroza, Kendall Campus president, said the new building will help serve the campus’ growing population, which has increased 35 percent since 1997. “We are very excited,” she added. “The building will provide better service and new technology for students, as well as accommodate our growth.” Miami-Dade College’s Kendall Campus registered 34,461 students for credit and non-credit courses during the 2011 fall semester. Designed for LEED Gold certification, the approximately 136,000-square-foot structure is scheduled to be completed by October 2012.

Opening the relocated School of Business from its existing building is planned for the 2013 spring semester, according to Gloria Baez, dean of MDC Kendall Administrative Services. Architectural design by Perkins and Will incorporates environmental technologies that include energy-efficient air conditioning, plumbing and water conservation, as well as building construction features and material uses, she said. Kaufman-Lynn is the building’s general contractor. The first three floors of the services building will centralize admissions, registration and financial aid services for new and continuing students and provide 21 new classrooms on the third floor. The fourth floor will become the new home for MDC’s School of Business with a spacious multi-purpose room and classrooms. The fifth floor is designed as a testing center for admissions, placement and similar programs. The Kendall campus is the largest of eight that comprise Miami-Dade College throughout the county with a total registration of 174,000. MDC listed 164,798 students during the 2009-10 academic year.

vehicle access,” he said. “Notification of residency of a convicted sex offender within a community is permissible but should be handled with legal advice to avoid conflict with the Federal Fair Housing Act.” Condominium ownership rights created a brief chuckle when Breitner described a current case involving a Fisher Island resident and his pet parrots. A circuit court will decide legality of an injunction filed against a condominium owner to remove 11 parrots from inside a unit, even though community regulations permit housing pet birds. “The court must decide if complaining owners are entitled to a peaceful night’s sleep when squawking is heard at all hours of the night,” Breitner explained, adding most condominium issues can be settled without court action if condominium boards act judiciously within legal boundaries. “For example, a common occurring problem is what to do about an aging, mentally impaired resident who endangers the security of his neighbors by leaving water running in a bathroom, or a lighted stove.” Noting that involuntary outpatient placement for a 72-hour examination period is provided through the the Florida Mental Health Act of 1971 (also known as the “Baker Act”), Breitner said association officers should not initiate such action until establishing legal authority to act for the association in behalf of unit owners. “When a condominium board knows this may be a potential problem, it should first notify a family member and then report the problem to police before taking any action themselves,” he said. “Otherwise, the association can become liable for a suit that can eventually cost association owners, a result more common than you may think in Florida.” Legislation passed only within the past year now permits condominium boards to directly assess tenants of leased units for unpaid community fees, he noted. Rental leases should be written to require

tenants to adhere to community regulations with a stipulation that failure constitutes a “material breach” of the community bylaws, which should take precedence over terms of a written lease. “The best protection for association boards is to make sure any written unit lease is subject to the association by-laws and the declaration of condominium ownership as adopted by the condominium association from the original development interest,” he stated. “Rights traditionally applied to singlefamily homes changed significantly for condominiums ever since shared ownership provisions began posing new legal problems in the late 1960s. Changes occur in state statutes every year, so it’s important for board members to be knowledgeable of recently approved and pending legislation,” Breitner concluded. An entrepreneurial pilot and fervent supporter of the Wings Museum, Botelho delighted “Fly-In” audiences by taking a sturdy, one-seat “14-Bis” replica to the air for short overflights of the airport during the weekend. “I was happy to do so,” beamed Botelho, a part-time Miami resident who is a founder of the Broa Fly-In, an annual fly-in and air show known as the leading aviation fair in Latin America, now planning its 12th annual program, June 22-24, 2012, in Brazil’s Sao Paulo state at the Broa Golf Resort. His dedication to “The Demoiselle Project” led to reconstruction of replicates of the second airplane designed by his countryman, Dumont, as well as books, exhibits and fly-in appearances in which he regularly participates. Botelho’s fervent support of the Wings Museum’s goal to preserve aviation history and co-sponsorship of its latest “Fly-In” led to friendly visits with Lane that brought up a century-long background of both the Paris 1907 flights of the 14-Bis and the Wrights’ epic flights on Dec. 17, 1903, at Kill Devil Hills, NC, the earliest powered flights in the U.S. “As to which came first, it’s no longer a controversy among most aviation people,” said Lane, who noted the original Wright aircraft hangs in the Smithsonian in

Washington, DC, well-recognized as the first to meet the modern definition of flight (i.e., manned, powered, heavier-than-air and fully-controllable). “That particular airplane was known as the ‘03 Flyer’ while the second, known as 05, is on display at a private museum in what is now Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton,” she explained. “There was an 04 but my great-grand uncles dismantled it for parts so many times that it simply became non-existent. Some of those parts probably exist in the 05 aircraft.” Surrounded by model replicas of U.S. aviation history as she relaxed in the Wings Museum lobby, the descendant of Lorin Wright (with Reuchlin, brothers of Orville and Wilbur) said, “I never thought of becoming a spokesperson until I attended a seminar in 2003 and began answering questions about the family and its background. “It’s led to a career of sorts, if only to make sure that the facts are right and the family history is correctly preserved,” added Lane, who serves as trustee for the Wright Family Foundation in Dayton, a charitable fund supporting preservation of aviation history. Since its inception in 1990, the foundation has donated some $1.4 million to 12 aviation-related organizations with Lane serving as her family’s liaison to such organizations as the Dayton Aviation Heritage Commission and the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historic Park. Would she become a pilot, like Botelho? “Oh, I dream about it,” she laughed, “Between raising my own family and board meetings, symposiums to attend and other events, I don’t know if there’ll ever be enough time.”

Captured trio reduces WK burglary activity

A trio of would-be burglars wound up in jail following an on-the-spot investigation by a team of eight Miami-Dade Police Hammocks District detectives and officers, emphasizing a continuing effort to reduce home break-ins in West Kendall. “Home burglaries represent the only area in which we’ve experienced an increase in crime in the district during 2011, up 5 percent as compared to a year ago,” said Capt. Hernan M. Organvidez, acting district commander. Typical of increasing vigilance to stop home burglaries, a special force of Hammocks police answered a call in the 15000 block of SW 115th Terrace on Sept. 26 when a “concerned citizen” reported a dark blue BMW occupied by three males suspiciously “casing the neighborhood.” Responding officers who reached the residence spotted the parked car in a driveway in time to begin questioning one suspect and noticed a damaged yard gate at the home, appearing opened by force. According to a letter of citation, while holding the first suspect, officers saw a sec-

ond emerge from the rear of the residence, calling out in Spanish, “Please don’t arrest me; we were going to burglarize the home but did not get to enter.” A third subject was then corralled after his getaway attempt by leaping a fence. The Hammocks team apprehended all three suspects, securing a screwdriver and gloves from one trying to conceal the items. The investigation and follow-up resulted in three subjects being charged with burglary as well as possible involvement in several home invasions and residential burglaries throughout Miami-Dade County, according to Capt. Organvidez. “Due to the teamwork and dedication to duty, three violent offenders were apprehended, possibly preventing further burglaries within Hammocks District,” he concluded. Special commendations presented by Hammocks Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) chair James Blough as October 2011 Officers of the Month during a CAC meeting on Oct. 26 honored Detectives Devon Dolam, Charles Castillo, Humberto Tabares, Victor Millian, Michael Barrios, Jason Marshall, and Officers Olenka Ryan and Jose DeLeon.

Capturing a violent suspect by using careful identification techniques earned Miami-Dade Police Officer Gary Vega honors as Officer of the Month for Kendall District on Oct. 26. Together on Aug. 26 with Sgt. Melissa Peacock, Officer Vega answered an urgent radio dispatch to a battery complaint at an apartment complex. A mother of a 5-yearold reported she had been pushed against a wall in a purse-snatching attempt, complaining that her head and face were struck by the assailant. When her teenage son entered the premises, the suspect left the apartment but was thought to remain in the complex area or depart for a baseball game at Tropical Park with a known friend driving a gold Saab, she told the arriving officers. Knowing those details and using photo IDs and a cellular phone number from a

second investigator, Officer Vega tracked identity of the friend’s vehicle and after an unsuccessful search of the apartment complex, arrived with a team of officers at Tropical Park where the parked Saab was immediately blocked by a police cruiser. Locating the vehicle’s owner, an effort to contact the subject to surrender was unsuccessful. However, by using a confirmed identity Officer Vega obtained by photo IDs and other investigative tools, the subject was apprehended in a crowd at the park. After the suspect was taken into custody, a records check revealed the subject had an extensive history of past robberies, violent crimes against persons and burglaries. For his investigative skills and determination in apprehending an “a violent career criminal,” the citation signed by CAC chair Barry White was presented to Officer Vega during the Kendall Citizens Advisory Committee meeting on Oct. 26.

The Shir Ami Religious School of Temple Judea recently announced it has received accreditation from the National Association of Temple Educators (NATE), a professional association of Reform Jewish Educators. This is the only congregation in MiamiDade County with current NATE (www.natenet.org) accreditation and there are only three other congregations in Florida with current accreditation. “Education, Jewish learning and teamwork are the main focus of staff and clergy,” said Beth Ellen Young, director of education. “This accreditation is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our qualified staff and their love for the children.” Currently, 250 children, ages 5 years to 18, are enrolled in the Shir Ami Religious School of Temple Judea. American Orchid Society moves to Fairchild Garden BY VANESSA VIADERO

Two recognized leaders in conservation, education, and research are joining forces to ensure the perpetuation and appreciation of orchids in North America and throughout the world. The venerable 90-year-old American Orchid Society (AOS) in Palm Beach County, known for its passion for orchids, is moving its international headquarters to Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Coral Gables. “The AOS move and strategic partnership with Fairchild Garden will move the North American center for education and tourism regarding orchids to Miami-Dade County,” said Bruce Greer, president of the board of trustees at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. “We are especially excited about the educational and research opportunities on one campus in Fairchild’s soon-to-be-completed Science Village.” The AOS outstanding collection of rare orchids will be used for teaching and will be displayed in Fairchild Garden’s new 12,500square-foot Clinton Family Conservatory as part of the DiMare Science Village scheduled to open in December 2012. In partnership with the AOS, Fairchild Garden’s annu-

al international Orchid Festival, which celebrates the orchid family with a show in the Garden House and outdoor sales tents by exhibitors, will expand and be greatly enhanced. The enthusiasm for orchids, the largest family of flowering plants, kindled in the 18th Century and has never waned. Effective Use of Social Networking Sites An increasing number of people are hopping on the social networking bandwagon. Whether Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, or the newly minted Google+, this growing trend has the potential to help connect us as never before. Social networking can be useful for advertising, networking, and making your business more accessible in our tech-savvy generation. However, social networking presents many dangers to users. Photos, videos, and even simple messages that are posted and made available to the public can and will be used against you in a court of law. For instance, a public photo of a woman cheerleading while she claims to have severe back pain can be used to disprove her claim of debilitating, chronic pain. Pictures of a person partying and holding drinks can damage the credibility of that person in divorce proceedings or a job interview. The same can be said of publicly posting that your interests and hobbies include illicit activities or frequently “checking in” at bars and clubs. If you do not want the entire world to access your profile, remember to limit the privacy settings. Keep in mind that even information you have marked as “private” is not protected from court-ordered information requests. The safest approach to social networking is to exercise self-restraint. Consider what you post, and monitor what others post about you. Check your social networking profiles regularly to protect yourself. Don’t be afraid to use social networking to expand your business and personal relationships, but remain mindful that anything you post on the internet can become public knowledge very easily.

Ivanna Alfonso adds artistic touch for wedding cakes BY GARY ALAN RUSE

Ivanna Alfonso is a South Florida wedding planner who has brought something new to her work by tapping into her art background. She creates customized bride and groom figures for the tops of wedding cakes. “As a child I was very artistic and creative, always trying to make something or trying to sell something I had made,” Alfonso said. “I was extremely dedicated to using my talents and creative style whenever possible. “This past November, we introduced our custom cake toppers and figures to the public. We started it as an idea and again put our creativity to the test as we spent months perfecting our figures until they were just right.” Rather than generic bride and groom miniature dolls, Alfonso crafts sculptures that are whimsical likenesses of her clients, which adds a personal touch to the cakes. The 24-year-old Alfonso, who lives in Miami Lakes, graduated from high school in 2005, got her AA degree from Miami Dade College, then transferred to Florida International University hoping to become an elementary school teacher. But after a year and a half she decided to try some-

thing different, changed her major and currently is finishing her degree in Hospitality Management and Event Planning. But she already has launched her Oh My Gosh! Weddings and Events business and Custom Cake Toppers. “I originally opened the business in 2008,” Alfonso said. “Both my sisters got married only one month apart, it was difficult to plan two weddings on a budget; every planner we looked at was extremely expensive and did not offer the packages we thought were helpful. After my sisters’ weddings I realized how much I enjoyed planning and helping them plan the most important day of their lives.” Cassandra Lopez of Coral Gables was one of Alfonso’s clients, and thought the artist’s little figures were great. “Ivanna’s custom wedding cake toppers are the perfect way to personalize yourself as a new couple,” Lopez said. “I was so happy to see how she brought our relationship to life by creating exact mini replicas of my husband and I. Needless to say our wedding cake was a real treat!” Alfonso’s handmade products also are on eBay, Etsy and on her own website, and have been sold all over the country as well as Canada, Denmark and Australia. She also plans quinces, sweet 16s, birthdays, baby and bridal showers, graduations and other types of events. In connection with National Adoption Month in November, Family Resource Center of South Florida Inc. (FRC), one of the state’s leading child welfare organizations, is spreading awareness about the benefits of public adoption. Throughout November, FRC is offering its top tips for navigating the public adoption process, along with accounts from families who have successfully adopted in this manner. As communities continue to struggle amid a long-lasting recession, Florida has seen a significant rise in reports of child abuse and neglect. According to the Department of Children and Families, monthly child abuse investigations in Miami-Dade during 2011 have gone up 22.2 percent over the 2010 numbers. As a result, more children and families are being referred for services, resulting in some of these children ultimately becoming available for public adoption. Throughout November, FRC will continue its important work in protecting the welfare of neglected and abused children and helping to facilitate public adoptions in South Florida. FRC also is working hard to “demystify” the public adoption process by offering top tips for families seeking to adopt children. On any given day there are approximately 800 children available for adoption in the state of Florida. Public adoption offers many benefits to those wishing to adopt children and helps provide a safe haven to the most vulnerable children in the foster care system. In addition to offering individuals and couples facing infertility or other roadblocks a path to creating a family, some of the benefits to public adoption include: state covered court costs, 100 per-

cent paid tuition for children who attend an in-state college or university, financial subsidies, and medical benefits for children who have special needs. FRC’s core mission is to rehabilitate and keep families together. However, of the approximately 1,000 children served annually, one-third will become free for adoption. A forever home is one the most important and rewarding gifts a person can give. Studies consistently show that the success rate of children who have been adopted increases dramatically compared to those who remain in foster care. Reports continue to surface nationwide about the impact of the weak economy and the rise in child abuse and neglect cases. Florida is no exception to this trend. With one of the highest unemployment rates in the country, Florida’s children are suffering. In the past year, FRC saw a 35 percent increase in the number of children being referred for services because of documented abuse or neglect. “There is a definite correlation between the state of the economy and the welfare of our children,” said Dr. Oren Wunderman, FRC executive director. “As parents are faced with joblessness, loss of income, and extended periods of stress, children are sometimes left to bear the brunt of these pressure cooker-like situations. Unfortunately for some of these children, reunification with their biological parents will not be possible.” This year FRC completed 48 adoptions, exceeding the goal of 40 set forth by Our Kids. On Friday, Nov. 18 (10 a.m.-3 p.m.) at the Miami Children’s Museum, FRC, Our Kids, and other area child welfare agencies will celebrate National Adoption Day by completing several youth adoptions and brining families together to mark this special day.

Donate a dog sweater to keep shelter dogs warm this winter BY KATHY LABRADA

The Miami-Dade County Animal Services Department (ASD) in coordination with the Miami-Dade County Public Library System (MDPLS) will be hosting a sweater drive for shelter dogs beginning Nov. 15 and continuing through Dec. 15. In preparation for dropping temperatures and the upcoming winter season, ASD is seeking donations of sweaters to keep shelter dogs warm and comfortable. Drop off new and gently used dog sweaters at any MDPLS branch library. Frankie’s Pizza: Still doing it the old fashioned way BY NANCY EAGLETON

The more things change, the more they stay the same — at least at Frankie’s Pizza, Miami’s oldest pizza shop. Frank and Doreen Pasquarella came from Ohio and opened Original Frankie’s Famous Pizza in South Miami in 1955. Two years later, they moved their pizza shop to a small grocery store located on Bird Road, flanked by farms, dirt roads and the Everglades. Nearly 55 years later, the scenery around Frankie’s Pizza has changed dramatically, but thanks to Frankie’s daughters Renee and Roxanne Pasquarella — who were born in Miami, raised in their dad’s pizza shop and now run the family business — the recipe for success has remained the same: Make the “world’s finest Italian pizza” and treat everyone like family. “Frankie’s Pizza has been in a time capsule. Our pizza has always been square, like our name, Pasquarella,” Roxanne pointed out. “And just like my dad did, we still place a free, hot slice of pizza on top of every box so our customers can enjoy it on the way home. Frankie was such a visionary.” To honor Pasquarella and his vision, the section of Bird Road in front of the pizza shop was named “Frank Pasquarella Way” in 2010, a fitting tribute to a man who often said, “It’s my way or the highway.” Another tribute to Pasquarella is the 45-minute documentary made about him, titled “Following Frank: Saucy Intonation’s of Miami’s Pizza King.” The documentary along with vintage Frankie’s T-shirts, caps and baby onsies are sold in the shop and online. Just like Frankie did, pizzas always are made to order and made from scratch. The sisters revealed that each day the dough is handmade, the tomatoes are ground, the sauce is cooked for three hours and the fresh cheese is grated.

“It’s labor intensive and more expensive to produce pizzas this way, but our customers would say that it’s well worth it,” Renee said. For those who grew up eating Frankie’s pizza but have migrated, Frankie’s satisfies its faraway fans by shipping its famous half-baked pizzas all over the U.S. Halfbaked pizzas are frozen, packed and shipped, and can be baked in the oven or cooked on the grill. Locals grab half-baked pizzas to keep in their freezers so they can enjoy a piping hot Frankie’s pizza at any time. “Our customers send half-baked pizzas to their kids in college and order them for family reunions, birthdays, anniversaries and football games,” Roxanne said. “It’s all about nostalgia and good family memories.” Speaking of family, Roxanne’s son Christopher is a third generation Frankie’s family member serving fourth generation Frankie’s Fanatics. Frankie’s recently lost “family member,” Jerry Dovin, who had worked at the pizza shop for 28 years. He passed away in August after battling skin cancer for two years. “He was a Vietnam vet and our Irish brother,” Roxanne said. “He is greatly missed.” Frankie’s Pizza has been ranked as one of the top pizzerias in the city and has won numerous awards over the years. As the sisters say, a Frankie’s pizza is best piping hot, right out of the oven. As part of the department’s effort to make services and information more accessible to the public, Miami-Dade Animal Services, 7401 NW 74 St., is launching its new online service at <www.miamidade.gov/animals/licenses.asp> that enables pet owners to check their pet’s account for license and vaccine expiration date, as well as for account contact and pet information. “Only 7 percent (1,612) of the 22,789 dogs and cats brought to the shelter last year were reunited with their owners,” said Alex Muñoz, Animal Services director. “We hope to accomplish two goals with the new online service — provide pet owners with convenient access to their account and the opportunity to advise us if account information is obsolete and requires to be updated, and

enable the public to reunite lost pets, wearing a tag, by identifying and contacting the pet owner. “All one needs is the license number to conduct the search. Accurate contact information is crucial in the reunification of pets with their families,” Muñoz added. “The new online service furthers the department’s mission to reunite lost pets with their families or find lifelong homes for as many animals as possible.” Pet owners are encouraged to visit the website to ensure their account is up to date. Testosterone Therapy for Erectile Dysfunction

Hypogonadism (low serum testosterone) is commonly associated with erectile dysfunction (ED). Testosterone-replacement therapy (TRT) may be useful (and even preferable to drugs such as Viagra® that are classified as “PDE-5 inhibitors”) in treating men with ED who have diminished libido or other sexual symptoms or when non-sexual symptoms such as depressed mood, decreased sense of vitality, and increased fatigue also exist. Addition of testosterone may improve the action of PDE-5 inhibitors in men with low or lownormal testosterone levels and erectile dysfunction who have not responded to PDE-5 inhibitors alone. The health benefits of TRT also include improvements in body composition, bone density, cognition, and sense of well-being. Thus, there may be good reasons to use TRT as first-line therapy for the man with ED. Concerns regarding prostatic and cardiovascular risks of TRT have not been supported by the literature. Nevertheless, men receiving TRT must be monitored at regular intervals with digital rectal examination and blood tests.
