Martha Backer: She got mayor’s ear, action BY RICHARD YAGER f driving SW 104th Street seems easier in West Kendall these days, thank Martha Backer, an active voice in the community’s affairs. Her annoyance with stop-and-go driving along the main east-west connector not only got Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez’s attention but action that has changed traffic signal sequences in her West Kendall neighborhood. Official notification came on Dec. 29 via an email from Robert Williams, interim division chief for the Miami-Dade County Public Works Traffic Signals and Signs Division. The email stated: “Pursuant to your email of Nov. 10, 2008, and subsequent conversation with MiamiDade Public Works (DPW) staff, engineers investigated the traffic signal progression and delays along SW 104th Street between SW MARTHA BACKER 147th and 107th Avenue, concentrating on midday and weekend times of day, and found that timing improvements were warranted and possible. “The newly developed timing patterns were found to improve the flow of traffic through the corridor by an average of 15 percent.” In addition, the DPW found a “signal communication problem” at SW 134th Avenue that prevents that signal light from being coordinated with all others in the corridor, leading to repairs that a contract crew from AT&T promised to fix by “the end of December, after which we expect further delay reduction,” Williams added.

Davis is first female chair of W. Kendall Community Council BY RICHARD YAGER

Backer, who resides on SW 143rd Court, originally emailed Mayor Alvarez that “it seems like I catch every light” on SW 104th Street. Both a former resident and police officer in Kendall, Mayor Alvarez acknowledged that “there is still considerable congestion in the Kendall area…but not easily overcome” due to vehicle overloads and a backlog of maintenance problems, still being solved. Nevertheless, Mayor Alvarez asked for specifics of her traffic headaches along

atricia “Shannen” Davis has been elected the first female chair of West Kendall’s Community Council 11, succeeding Domingo Castillo who held the position for the past two years. Jeff Wander was elected vice chair during an organizational session for 2009 during a non-zoning meeting on Dec. 17. Members Angela Vazquez and Joseph E. Delaney joined Davis and Wander in 4-0 unanimous votes after Castillo recused himself from voting, leaving a minimum quorum of four members to elect new officers because the sixth member, Beatrice Suarez, was not in attendance. The seventh Council 11 seat to be filled by attorney Nelson Diaz has awaited Miami-Dade commissioners’ confirmation of his appointment by Commissioner Joe A. Martinez. Davis began community council service in 2006, serving in an “at large” position designated by Commissioner Martinez prior to her election for a fouryear term when unopposed in Sept. 5, 2006, primary voting. She then became only the second female member on Council 11 since the organization of the unincorporated

SW 104th Street so they could be thoroughly investigated, leading to Williams’ report of recent sequence changes. A member of the board of governors of the Kendall Federation of Homeowner Associations (KFHA), Backer originated a public outcry against widening SW 104th Street to six lanes west of SW 137th Avenue, a project the DPW eventually dropped from a five-year work list. “Sometimes it takes a little piece of sand to be an irritant that gets that oyster to make a pearl,” Backer concluded.

MDX ‘builds in’ job security on the Shula Michael Miller EXECUTIVE EDITOR

AROUND TOWN Bulldozers, cranes and other heavyduty equipment arriving along the east and west right-of-ways of the Shula Expressway signal a major roadway upgrade, north and south of SW 104th Street. It’s all to enhance traffic flow at the intersection of Killian Parkway and SW 107th Avenue, according to Cindy PoloScrantes, a spokesperson for the MiamiDade Expressway Authority. Among the improvements: • An additional lane northbound and southbound on SR 874 (Shula) between SW 120th Street and Killian Parkway. • Widening of Killian Parkway interchange that will include a new threelane westbound exit ramp. • Noise walls extending along the east side of the reconfigured expressway with buffers still to be resolved with neighbors on the west. • Open Road Tolling (ORT) will replace the conventional toll plaza just south of the existing Killian Parkway bridge over the Shula. The project is broken into eight construction phases, with the first to complete most of the noise walls currently planned. The entire project is scheduled for completion by the fall of 2011, one of $184 million in construction contracts during the last four months of 2008. Concludes the MDX: “According to a study by The Washington Economics Group, those contracts translate to 2,658 new jobs locally… a significant stimulus

to the local economy.” Or, as we motorists/taxpayers grit our collective teeth, hurray for job securities as expressway development moves inexorably toward pay-as-you-go driving! EXPLOSIVE HOLIDAY AT CONTINENTAL PARK Continental Park “grape line” tells of several holiday incidents involving what appear to be kid pranks, including a dangerous incident that drew police, as described by one neighbor who heard an explosive device go off on SW 75th Avenue, near 64th Street. “When the police arrived, they determined the device was built by pouring swimming pool acid inside a plastic Coke bottle and adding pellets made from aluminum foil and then screwed close. The chemical reaction that ensued releases hydrogen gas, which, since it has no way to leave the bottle, creates pressure until the bottle explodes. The police indicated that they had seen devices like this in the North Miami area but that this was not common to this area and usually the work of kids.” Responded one neighbor: “What is happening to our quiet area? We had the Christmas lights ripped out of our tree…(and) pulled out to the street. Evidently, someone is playing Scrooge!!” There’s neighborhood trouble brewing in the SW 120th Street area near Kendall-Tamiami Executive Airport where DERM (Department of Environmental Regulation) has apparently permitted removal of fourteen 30-year old canopy trees on SW 105th Street, just east of The Hammocks. Irritated neighbors are waiting to see if they will be replaced…we’ll keep you abreast of developments as officials investigate! Dawn Shirreff of Florida’s “Clean

Water Action” program says Lennar’s Parkland project is both “Economic Nonsense” & “Urban Sprawl”, noting 140 organizations and communities have organized to Hold the (UDB) Line since 2005. “Given Miami-Dade’s water shortages combined with the recession, collapsing housing market and more than $8.5 billion dollars in backlogged infrastructure, it is very clear that moving the UDB is not in the interest of taxpayers,” she declares. Still no word from Lennar about when they plan to revive the southwest mega-project at Krome and SW 136th Street in 2009. All I want for 2009 is peace and prosperity R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY Maybe it was a list for Santa; perhaps it is a list of resolutions for 2009. Whatever we call it, I sincerely hope and pray that we in Miami-Dade County, Florida, and the nation will see a brighter 2009 for all who live in America. Here is my wish list: • From all of us, Democrats and Republicans, please grant president-elect Obama the strength, courage and knowledge to turn our nation around. • Find a resolution for ending the war in Iraq and Afghanistan; bring our men and women home, and end the financial drain on Americans. • Find the dollars to upgrade our medical and psychological services for our returning veterans and those that have served in previous wars. This is the minimum we owe the brave members of our armed services.

• Mend our economy so thousands of unemployed Americans can return to their jobs and feel secure about their futures. • Find a way to slow down the foreclosure process. We must move quickly as every month that passes finds thousands of delinquent homeowners too late for assistance. • Let’s hope that the $700 billion giveaway to financial institutions works and doesn’t end up as an infusion of cash to reward those that made horrible decisions. • May the stock market improve and put the dollars back in our pockets, dollars that we lost over the past year. • Save the health of those that must work past retirement age because of the economic turndown. • Find a way to provide medical assistance to the 40 million Americans who do not have health insurance. • Here at home, resolve our county’s mass transit problems. We need to see a benefit for the extra sales tax dollars we have been paying since 2002. • Find a way to finance the Port of Miami tunnel with a revenue bond issue. We need to get the truck traffic off the

VIEWPOINT downtown streets. • Tourism is the backbone of South Florida’s economy, the driving force behind our employment. Let’s find the dollars to advertise, advertise, advertise in Europe and South America to keep tourists coming and spending in our community. • Help our legislature to find the dollars to support our public schools. Without education we have no future. • Find new sources of revenue in our state such as eliminating many of the sales tax exemptions. • Convince the powers-to-be in Tallahassee that the State of Florida, not some offshore investment group, should receive the financial benefits of Alligator Alley. The dollars that would be received today will long be forgotten in years to come. • Work on our municipal, county and state budgets to find ways to trim the fat

without hurting the citizens of our state. • Try to convince Citizens Property Insurance that it is part of “our” government, the citizens of Florida, and that its function is to serve the community. • Lastly, please find a way to teach some of our misguided elected officials that they are servants of the public and were not elected to further their own personal futures. “Public servant,” after all, means “serving the public!” Please join me in seeking ways to return America to a better place to live, work, raise our families and live out our retirement years in peace and prosperity.

New regulations should help protect credit card users

Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY Here’s good news for credit card users who have been getting burned by escalating interest rates. The Federal Reserve Board recently approved final rules that would better protect credit card users by prohibiting certain unfair acts or practices and improving the disclosures consumers receive in connection with credit card accounts and other revolving credit plans. The final rules prohibiting certain credit card practices were adopted under the Federal Trade Commission Act, and are being issued concurrently with substantially similar final rules by the Office of Thrift Supervision and the National Credit Union Administration. Among other things, the rules will: • Protect consumers from unexpected interest charges, including increases in the rate during the first year after account opening and increases in the rate charged on pre-existing credit card balances; • Forbid banks from imposing interest charges using the “two-cycle” billing method; • Require that consumers receive a reasonable amount of time to make their credit card payments; • Prohibit the use of payment allocation methods that unfairly maximize interest charges, and • Address sub-prime credit cards by limiting the fees that reduce the amount of available credit. In finalizing the rules on unfair credit card practices, the board carefully considered information obtained through consumer testing and more than 60,000 comment letters received during the comment period. “The revised rules represent the most comprehensive and sweeping reforms ever adopted by the board for credit card accounts,” said Federal Reserve chair Ben S. Bernanke. “These protections will allow consumers to access credit on terms that are fair and more easily understood.” The board also is adopting final rules to revise the disclosures consumers receive in connection with credit card accounts and other revolving credit plans

to ensure that information is provided in a timely manner and in a form that is readily understandable. These rules amend Regulation Z (Truth in Lending) and conclude a comprehensive review of the open-end credit rules. The final rules under Regulation Z require changes to the format, timing, and content requirements for credit card applications and solicitations, and for the disclosures that consumers receive throughout the life of an open-end account. Many of the changes reflect the result of consumer testing conducted on behalf of the board during its review. “Our intent is to increase transparency and fairness in how credit card and deposit accounts operate, thereby enhancing competition and empowering consumers to better manage their accounts and avoid unnecessary costs,” said Federal Reserve governor Randall S. Kroszner. “The rules represent a significant step forward in consumer protection,” he added. “By ensuring fairness and making credit terms easier to understand, these safeguards should allow more consumers to benefit from using credit.” Both of the final rules addressing credit card accounts take effect on July 1, 2010. The board is proposing separately rules to protect consumers that use overdraft services offered by their bank. The rule solicits public comment on proposed amendments to Regulation E (Electronic Fund Transfers) intended to provide consumers a choice regarding their institution’s payment of overdrafts for automated teller machine withdrawals and onetime debit card transactions. The board is proposing two alternative approaches to providing consumer choice, including a proposed requirement that would require institutions to obtain consumers’ affirmative consent (or opt-in) before any overdraft fees or charges may be imposed on consumers’ accounts. The comment period for the Regulation E proposal ends 60 days after publication in the Federal Register . In a related move, the board is adopting final amendments to Regulation DD (Truth in Savings) to address depository institutions’ disclosure practices related to overdraft services. The effective date for the final rules adopted under Regulation DD is Jan. 1, 2010.

Holiday celebrations and gift-giving mean lots of extra waste and recyclables for collection by Miami-Dade County’s waste collection crews and recycling service providers. To help its waste collection and recycling customers manage their waste, the Department of Solid Waste Management (DSWM) offers the following tips: Recycle as much as possible. The county’s single-stream recycling program offers a convenient way to manage extra holiday waste. The program accepts the following: • Glass, aluminum, steel and narrowneck plastic food and beverage containers (e.g., soda, water, juice, milk, eggnog and cider containers). Aluminum and plastic beverage containers can be flattened to save space in the cart. • Paperboard boxes used to package food and beverages such as crackers, cookies, cereal, pasta, soda/juice cans, juice boxes, hot chocolate packets and other convenience foods. Flatten these to maximize space in the recycling cart. • Gift boxes, shoe boxes and corrugated cardboard boxes. Be sure to break down the boxes so that they fit completely inside the cart. • Holiday cards, letters, magazines, store catalogs, gift wrap tubes,

newsprint and packing paper. All of these paper products are acceptable in the county’s expanded single-stream recycling program. Reuse whenever possible. If you are replacing old toys, clothing or household items with new ones or de-cluttering after the holidays, remember the old adage: “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” Gently used books, toys, clothing and household items are always welcomed by local thrift shops or charitable organizations. And donating goods keeps useful items out of the landfill. Pr operly dispose of the r est. What’s left of your waste after you have recycled and reused should fit nicely into the county’s 96-gallon EZGo waste cart. Miami-Dade solid waste customers are reminded that excess garbage will not be picked up from the curbside. Extra bags and waste placed on top of or alongside the cart cannot be collected by the automated waste collection vehicle. DSWM provides curbside waste collection and recycling services to singlefamily residents in the unincorporated service area and local municipalities such as Cutler Bay, Palmetto Bay and Pinecrest. For additional recycling and waste management tips, visit the department’s website at <www.miamidade.gov/dswm>.

Kendall Regional earns ASA’s Bronze Achievement Award BY PETER JUDE Kendall Regional Medical Center (KRMC) has received the American Stroke Association’s (ASA) Get With The Guidelines–Stroke (GWTG–Stroke) Bronze Performance Achievement Award. The award recognizes KRMC’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of stroke care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations. “With a stroke, time lost is brain lost, and the GWTG–Stroke Bronze Performance Achievement Award addresses the important element of time,” said Mauricio Sirvent, Kendall Regional CEO. KRMC has developed a comprehensive system for rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients admitted to the emergency department. This includes always being equipped to provide brain imaging scans, having neurologists available to conduct patient evaluations and using clot-busting medications when appropriate. To receive the GWTG–Stroke Bronze Performance Achievement Award, Kendall Regional consistently followed the treatment guidelines in the GWTG–Stroke program for 90 days. These include aggressive use of medications like tPA, antithrombotics, anticoagulation therapy, DVT prophylaxis, cholesterol reducing drugs, and smoking cessation. The 90-day evaluation period is the first in an ongoing selfevaluation by the hospital to continually reach the 85 percent compliance level needed to sustain this award. “The American Stroke Association commends Kendall Regional Medical Center for its success in implementing standards of care and protocols,” said Lee H. Schwamm, MD, national Get With The Guidelines Steering Committee member and director of the acute stroke services at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

“The full implementation of acute care and secondary prevention recommendations and guidelines is a critical step in saving the lives and improving outcomes of stroke patients,” he added. GWTG–Stroke uses the “teachable moment,” the time soon after a patient has had a stroke, when they are most likely to listen to and follow their healthcare professionals’ guidance. Studies demonstrate that patients who are taught how to manage their risk factors while still in the hospital reduce their risk of a second stroke. Through GWTG–Stroke, customized patient education materials are made available at the point of discharge, based on patients’ individual risk profiles. The take-away materials are written in an easy-to-understand format and are available in English and Spanish. In addition, the GWTG Patient Management Tool provides access to up-to-date cardiovascular and stroke science at the point of care. “The time is right for Kendall Regional Medical Center to be focused on improving the quality of stroke care by implementing GWTG–Stroke. The number of acute ischemic stroke patients eligible for treatment is expected to grow over the next decade due to increasing stroke incidence and a large aging population,” Sirvent said. According to the American Stroke Association, each year approximately 700,000 people suffer a stroke — 500,000 are first attacks and 200,000 are recurrent attacks. Of stroke survivors, 21 percent of men and 24 percent of women die within a year, and for those aged 65 and older, the percentage is even higher. Kendall Regional Medical Center is a 412-bed, full-service hospital providing the residents of southwest Miami-Dade County with 24-hour comprehensive medical, surgical and diagnostic services, as well as a wide range of patient and community services. Miami Killian Cougarettes chosen to perform in Rose Bowl Parade BY DEBBIE LAFERTY ASBILL Nine senior members of Miami Killian High School’s Cougarettes — Valeria Alvarez, Nicole Garmel, Taisha Henriquez, Katy Hernandez, Karry Pomes, Brittney Rohan, Natalie Rosa, Lianet Sardui and Danielle Shea — were selected by Bands of America to participate with the national Honor Band in the 2009 Tournament of Roses Parade on Jan. 1 in Pasadena, CA. The young ladies were selected from among hundreds of applicants across the nation for membership in this prestigious honors ensemble. “We are honored with this great opportunity of representing our school and community,” said Pomes, captain, and Rosa, co-captain. “We love being part of the Cougarettes and we’ll definitely make them proud.” The Marching Cougar Band director is John Bixby. “I’m very proud of these young ladies; this year’s Cougarettes won superior awards and helped lead the marching band in obtaining the Grand Champion Marching Band award,” Bixby said. “I will watch them in the Rose Bowl Parade with prestigious honor.”

Ricardo Rodriguez, Killian principal added his praise. “The Killian Marching Cougar Band and the Cougarettes are the best musical talent here in South Florida and I’m proud to have the honor of watching this group of talented ladies in the Rose Bowl Parade representing our school.” The BOA Honor Band is a 300-piece national ensemble with winds, percussion and a flag and dance team. George N. Parks, director of the University of Massachusetts Minuteman Marching Band, and an all-star staff will direct the band. Bands of America is a program of Music for All, one of the nation’s largest and most influential organization’s in support of active music-making. The Cougarettes Color Guard performers earned the opportunity to spend a week in Southern California, where they had rehearsals, performed at the Tournament of Roses Bandfest and Disneyland, participated in special activities as well as a featured appearance in the world-famous parade. “To be selected for this unique opportunity is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for these students,” said Scott McCormick, Bands of America president

Florida author to discuss his book, The First Hollywood BY TINA MENDITTO Florida author and former Miami resident Shawn Bean will be at Books and Books in Coral Gables on Saturday, Jan. 10, 7 p.m., to discuss The First Hollywood, a historical non-fiction account that showcases one of show business’ bestkept secrets: it was Jacksonville, FL, not Hollywood, CA, that served as America’s original film capital. Immediately following the intimate discussion and book signing, there will be a free, al fresco screening of Cecil B. DeMille’s The Greatest Show on Earth in the Books & Books courtyard located at 265 Aragon Ave. The Café at Books & Books will be open for dinner and drinks following the author’s discussion and book signing. For additional information, call 305442-4408 or visit online at <www.booksandbooks.com>. The First Hollywood remains a top seller on Amazon.com and has been featured on CNN, USA Today, The Hollywood Reporter, Florida Travel + Life, MIAMI Magazine, Orlando Magazine, and Florida International Magazine among others. Published by the University Press of Florida, the book’s release marks the 100th anniversary of the first film ever made in Florida — Love in the Everglades, 1908. The First Hollywood explores the story of Jacksonville as a turn-of-the-century film town that once drew industry elite and wide-eyed hucksters like a cinematic Gold Rush. In fact, from 1909 to 1926 approximately 300 films were produced in Jacksonville. However, when the famed Hollywood sign was built into the hills of Los Angeles in 1923, it marked the rise of one film capital and the fall of another.

Community Invited to YMCA Family Fitness Challenge

- By Julian Castro, Membership and Fitness Director, South Dade Family Branch, YMCA of Greater Miami

As part of the YMCA Family Fitness Challenge, families will submit photos of themselves engaged in healthy activities together.

W

ith tough economic times surrounding us, families are getting back to basics and concentrating on what is most important, their general well-being. Parents must increasingly find economical ways for the family to socialize, stay entertained and be together. They also must ensure that their children are staying healthy and active, while finding ways to reduce their own stress levels. The YMCA is here to HELP with our newly launched Be Healthy, Be Together, Belong! campaign aimed at families who are seeking ways to stay connected, and be healthy in spirit, mind and body all year long. A large component of this will be the YMCA Family Fitness Challenge, a free 12-week program open to the community where families participate and have fun TOGETHER. The YMCA Family Fitness Challenge kicks-off January 17th with a free Family Fun Day, Fitness Carnival and Open House. The South Dade Family YMCA event takes place from 11 am – 4 pm; and the Homestead Family YMCA event takes place from 12 noon to 5 pm. The kick-off starts with a Pep Rally, followed by family activities such as basketball games, fitness obstacle courses, field relays and MORE! Each family member will collect a chip for each completed activity. The first 50 families to complete all activities and collect their chips will receive a YMCA gift bag! The Family Fitness Challenge is free and open to everyone, both YMCA members and the general community. Registration will take place at the kick-off events, so please join us! The next 12 weeks will feature special themes along with a different family activity every week. Families earn points based on participation in daily exercise.

We’ll look to our YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility, and use the honor system! Points also will be awarded based on weekly family photos you’ll take as you complete your family activity for the week. Week 1 ( Jan 17 – Jan 23): Families invited to register at the YMCA branches in South Dade and Homestead, and have a fitness evaluation by the YMCA wellness staff. This week’s Family Photo Activity is “Family Pantry Raid.” It’s your chance to get rid of the junk food! Week 2 ( Jan 24 – Jan 30): This week’s Family Photo Activity is “Two TV/Computer-Free Nights,” where your family spends time together, eating dinner as a family with the TV and computer turned off! Week 3 ( Jan 31 – Feb 6): The Family Photo Activity for this week is “Family Road Trip,” where your family takes a photo of a short trip together to the beach, a local park, or even for a walk around the neighborhood. Week 4 (Feb 7 – Feb 13): Give your family a special valentine for this week’s Family Photo Activity with “Family Cooking,” where you prepare a meal together, and have everyone join in. Week 5: (Feb 14 – Feb 20): Come and take your family’s picture at the YMCA for a Free Family Fun Day with lots of activities to enjoy together! Week 6 (Feb 21 – Feb 27): Take a photo of your family volunteering. Participate in a food drive, beach cleanup, or other community activity that you can do together. Week 7 (Feb 28 – Mar 6): It’s “Family Movie Night.” Take a photo of your family watching a movie on TV or DVD, or out at the theater. Week 8 (Mar 7 – Mar 13): Time to check up on that pantry with another “Family Pantry Raid.” Did you keep the junk food to a minimum? This week take pictures of 2 healthy family meals. Week 9 (Mar 14 – Mar 20): Photograph your family engaged in a 30-minute cardio activity. You can walk, bike or take a cardio class together. Or jump rope, play football in the yard or any other activity that gets your heart pumping! Week 10 (Mar 21 – Mar 27): “Family Chores” are a great way to be active around the house. Photograph family members mowing the lawn, cleaning the house or even doing laundry. Week 11 (Apr 3 – Apr 10): Have a “Family Walk/Run” and take photos along the way. Week 12 (Apr 11 – 15): The YMCA Family Fitness

Challenge is drawing to a close, so it’s time to check in at the Y for a new wellness assessment to see how you did. April 18: Final Celebration and YMCA Healthy Kids Day. Come to the YMCA for a free day of games and healthy activities for families. Awards will be presented to the Family Fitness Challenge Winners, with a grand prize of a 6-month YMCA family membership. I hope you will join us for the YMCA Family Fitness Challenge. Families of all sizes and ages are welcome. (from singles to families to seniors). Make the YMCA part of your family this year.

More than 60 people came out to the Homestead Family YMCA’s Workout-BeforeYou-Pig-Out Family Event on Thanksgiving morning.

Nissan Frontier tweaks design, adds PRO-4X model Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS The Nissan Frontier is a pickup that’s been designed and built for people who want a truck that’s good for both work and play. For 2009, Nissan engineers have tweaked the overall design of the Frontier, adding a new front fascia grille and headlight design, and new 16- and 18-inch wheels. At the same time, a new off-road model — the PRO-4X — has been added to the lineup, along with new crew cab packages that include popular optional equipment that would cost a lot more if purchased separately. The Frontier has excellent acceleration, towing capacity and off-road ability thanks to the 4.0-liter DOHC V-6 that produces 261 hp and 281 pounds-feet of torque. It’s the same VQ engine series that’s used in Nissan’s 350Z, Maxima, Altima, Murano and Quest, but it’s specif-

ically tuned for a truck. The V-6 also gets good fuel efficiency at 17/21 mpg. A 2.5liter, 152 hp DOHC inline four-cylinder engine also is available on the base King Cab 4x2 model. Three transmissions are available — a five-speed automatic, a six-speed manual and a five-speed manual (on King Cab four-cylinder models). Frontier 4x4 models include a shift-on-the-fly four-wheel drive system with 2WD/4H/4LO modes operated by an electronically controlled part-time transfer case. As for styling, the Frontier has many of the full-size Nissan Titan’s features, including the angled strut grille, large bumpers, short front and rear overhangs and large geometric fender flares. It also shares Titan’s suspension layout and many component designs, including the all-steel double-wishbone front suspension and solid axle rear suspension, with over-slung leaf springs and a long suspension stroke for optimized off-road performance. Again this year, Frontier offers Crew Cab SE and LE Long Bed models (the beds are more than 13 inches longer). The Long Bed models have the roomy interior of the Crew Cab, plus the usable bed space of the King Cab. Both the King

The Nissan Frontier has an angled strut grille, large bumpers and large geometric fender flares.

Cab and Crew Cab models offer a factoryapplied, spray-on bed liner and the Utilitrack tie-down system that provides excellent cargo hauling flexibility through the use of five special “C” cross-section rails mounted in the bed. The PRO-4X off-road is the all-new model for 2009 and it comes with such performance enhancements as Bilstein high-pressure shock absorbers, additional skid plates on the oil pan and transfer case, an electronic rear differential locker, 2- or 4-wheel limited-slip and unique machine-finished 16-inch aluminum-alloy off-road wheels with large BFGoodrich P265/75R16 Rugged Trail tires.

Inside, the PRO-4X has a distinctive leather-appointed, red-stitched shifter knob and steering wheel, a chrome accent ring around the white-faced meter gauges, and a trip computer. All PRO-4Xs have a body-colored grille and bumpers, outside mirrors and door handles, and fog lamps. Our test vehicle was a Frontier 4x2 LE with a base price of $27,040.
