Proposals sought for development adjoining Metrozoo BY RICHARD YAGER vailability of development proposals for a water park, family entertainment center and hotel to be developed on a 43-acre site adjoining Miami Metrozoo was announced on Jan. 27 by Miami-Dade Commission chair Dennis C. Moss who has shepherded new south Miami-Dade projects since Hurricane Andrew devastated the area in 1992. Solicitation details for RFP 630 currently are under a “Cone of Silence” restriction, but details are available at the Miami-Dade government website for procurement. Recently addressing a West Kendall audience, the commissioner, who was recently elected commission chair, said, “My dreams were threefold — rebuilding southwest Dade no matter how long it took, following Andrew.” “Zoo rebuilding and expansion, planning and building a new cultural center, and new water park and entertainment center at the zoo have been the key projects to realize those objectives for the last 15 years I’ve served on the commission,” Moss said. “Now, we have the opportunity to create our own Universal Studios-type entertainment center district at the doorstep of a world-class zoo.” The request for proposals specifies development construction, operation and maintenance of the water park, but also allows bidding firms to provide technical proposals for both a familystyled vacation entertainment center and hotel on adjoining sites. The concept for a water park design includes attractions and rides, such as a “lazy river” for floating inner tube rides and rafts, a wave and surf pool, an inner

Miami Little Toros show off their winning trophies.
BY GLORIA BURNS The Junior Orange Bowl brought hockey teams from as far away as Tampa and West Palm Beach to participant in the Second Annual JOBC Miami Little Toros Ice Hockey Tournament. An amazingly talented group of players, ranging in age from as young as 5 to 12, made this a very competitive event. Among the competitors were the Golden Wolves from Davie; West Palm Beach Rec All Stars; Florida Eels from Ft. Myers; Junior Panthers from Coral Springs; Miami Little Toros, and Tampa Bay Titans. Played Jan. 16-19 at Kendall Ice Arena, this was the second year for the tournament, a very welcomed and relatively new addition
to the Junior Orange Bowl festival of events. JOBC president Jim Borgmann and JOBC administrative director Mark Pidal credit the success of this event to Joe Tipone, director of the Miami Little Toros, and so many others such as Peter Burgess, a parent volunteer. As with most JOBC events, volunteers are the backbone of any event and the reason a small JOBC staff is able to manage what has become the “world’s largest youth festival.” The Junior Orange Bowl Festival now has activities from as early as September and October through February. Those interested in becoming involved should contact the JOBC offices at 305-662-1210. Information on the festival is available online at <www.jrorangebowl.com>.
Important safety information from Florida City Gas Florida City Gas is proud to provide one of the most efficient, reliable and environmentally friendly energy choices you can make for your home or business. Every day, underground pipelines safely transport natural gas to homes and businesses throughout the area. Florida City Gas is responsible for the maintenance of pipelines in our service territory. As part of our commitment to safety, we meet or exceed state and federal pipeline safety regulations, routinely perform extensive qualitycontrol checks, advise residents how to recognize and prevent natural gas leaks, and work closely with officials to develop emergency response plans.
Pipeline Markers like the one pictured indicate the general area of the pipeline and right-of-way, but not its exact location or depth. They aren’t present in all areas, so it’s important to always call before you dig. If you detect an emergency, call the phone number
on the pipeline marker to contact us. If a right-of-way is adjacent to your property, it’s your responsibility to ensure no new installations of landscaping or physical structures interfere with Florida City Gas’ access to the pipeline, and with our ability to keep the pipeline safe through routine monitoring and maintenance as required by federal or state safety regulations.
Know What’s Below. Call Before You Dig. Excavation work, including digging or plowing around a home or business, is the most common cause of natural gas emergencies. Before digging around your property, state law requires you call 8-1-1, a statewide, toll-free number, to have your utility lines professionally marked. You must call at least three business days before digging, excluding holidays, so underground utility lines can be located and marked—free of charge—before you begin your project.
If you smell gas, act quickly. Although natural gas pipeline incidents are extremely rare, these tips will help
and
Keep the Air Clean
LOOK for blowing dirt or continued bubbling of standing water. LISTEN for a hissing or roaring sound near a natural gas appliance or line. SMELL for the distinctive rotten-egg scent of natural gas. Take action if you detect even a small amount of this odor. LEAVE the area IMMEDIATELY if you detect a natural gas leak. Don’t try to identify the source or stop the leak. CALL Florida City Gas at 888-352-5325 or 911 once you are safely away from the possible leak site. Stay away from the area until a Florida City Gas representative or emergency personnel indicate it is safe to return. REMEMBER while near a possible natural gas leak, do not touch or use anything that may cause a spark. This includes lighters, matches, cigarettes, flashlights, light switches and telephones. Wait until you have left the area to use a cell phone. 1

COLLECTIBLE, from page 1 –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– METROZOO, 1940s Superman comics at 10 cents per copy to $3 and $4 pricing of favored Batman and Spiderman books today. “As a matter of fact, here’s a nice vintage book,” observed Perez, extracting a comic protected by a heavy plastic cover from among dozens of jam-packed shelves lining his shop at 6650 SW 40 St. “Superman, No. 3, published, as the cover says, as Winter 1940. Those first issues were published quarterly, not monthly. Today, it’s worth $4,500,” Perez said, noting his book carries the signature of artist Jerry Schuster and co-author and the girl who first played Lois Lane, Clark Kent’s often-ditched sweetheart. “Comics have become a new American art form,” he reflected, crediting Andy Warhohl’s glamourization of a Campbell’s soup can with starting the trend. “They’re the images of what’s happening today. “Special books like the ObamaSpiderman have a few forerunners, like the lives of Saint Theresa and Pope John the Second, or the murderer Jeffery Dalmer fighting Jesus Christ. “The Theresa only sells at $4 today but the first ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ commands about $2,300,” he said. The tiny shop is a familiar Bird Road landmark, its west-facing outer wall painted with an eye-arresting display of comic book characters that anchor a row of antique, art and furnishings storefronts immediately east of SW 67th Avenue (Ludlam Road). Perez began clerking for Arnold and Maxine Square two years after they opened the store in 1974, then stayed through two ownerships before purchasing the business in 1990, the love of comics staying with him from childhood.
Now, his love of “anything that might be collectible,” has packed the store shelves with an eclectic mix of everything from matchbook covers to monster art. Recently named by “The Best Of” website listing as 2008’s “Best Book Store,” Perez proudly tacked up the citation next to the door that opens on an eye-bewildering display of posters, character busts, masks, stacks of books, and toys barely leaving room for browsers. “There’s probably close to 200,000 items of some sort here, not to mention at least a half-million baseball and collectible gum cards,” he estimates, standing beside a life-size bust of Bela Lugosi in Dracula makeup. Two feet away is a hand-cranked record player with a shellac 78 rpm record of Tommy Dorsey’s Song of India on the turntable. A complete set of Charles Dickens works in 48 volumes, published in 1891, is tucked away on a nearby shelf, carrying a value of $2,300. “One time, I picked up two matchbooks displaying a picture of Mickey Mantle when he owned a Holiday Inn, showing him on the cover, swinging a bat in the barroom,” he recalled. “Those went for a couple of hundred dollars.” His most valuable piece? “That would have to be Spiderman, Number One,” Perez said. It’s valued at $15,000. Like other items worth thousands of dollars, it’s not kept in the store where wandering the premises is a treat for all who cherish America’s pop culture and comic throwaways, as well as those that a charismatic new President have turned into today’s collectible treasures. tube and mat racing water slide, water flow riders, coasters and interactivity play areas. The family center would complement the water park with “indoor challenge” attractions for ice or roller skating, covered kart racing, laser tag games, as well as outdoor children’s rides, skill and chance games, and building blocks. Incorporated within the center would be restaurants with other food and beverage areas dramatized with lighted fountains. A “vacation-styled” hotel is a third option with up to 210 rooms located on 15 acres of the existing parking lot with 23 acres reserved for the water park and family area. Initially, the water park and family center carried development estimates of up to $40 million designed in part to help drive up attendance at Metrozoo which currently hosts some 600,000 visi-
tors annually, according to Miami-Dade Parks Department. An investment of $23-25 million to attract a half-million yearly visitors to a new water park, and a $10 million to $15 million to create an audience of 185,000 annually also were forecast. Commissioner Moss, who also chairs the Zoo Oversight Board, began creating momentum for rebuilding southwest Dade almost immediately after the $30 billion in damages by Hurricane Andrew left whole communities wiped out in Homestead, Florida City, Cutler Ridge and other south Miami-Dade areas. The reopening of an expanded aviary and the 2008 opening of the Amazon and Beyond exhibits were part of Moss’ overall plan to restore and expand Metrozoo. He also has spearheaded the development and initial building at the South Miami-Dade Cultural Center at a 6.39-acre site on SW 211th Street to increase economic and employment opportunities throughout the area.

South Florida projected to lose 84,800 jobs in 2009 R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY Only greater New York and Los Angeles will lose more jobs in 2009 than South Florida. Where are we losing jobs and what can we do to reverse the trend? Where do we work in South Florida? We have jobs in banking, newspaper publishing, manufacturing, and government, but the majority of jobs in South Florida revolve around tourism. Try as hard as we do, it is impossible to get away from the fact that we depend upon visitors to South Florida to carry our employment. Tourists come to our shores come for two reasons. One group comes to South Florida for sun, fun, shopping and relaxation. The second group comes to visit our cities for business. Greater Miami is the home to over 1,000 multi-national corporate offices serving South America and the Caribbean, more than any other metro-
politan area in America. Companies such as ExxonMobil, IBM, Burger King, Samsung and Porsche employ thousands of South Floridians and receive thousands of visitors on business from South America every year. Today we are losing business visitors to our shores as the general volume of business declines during our economic turndown. Many South American vacationers are staying home to save money. If we are to save 84,800 jobs we had better find a way to keep our visitors coming. Competition for visitors to the United States is intensifying. New York offers the theater and fine restaurants — it also offers cold weather. Atlanta is pushing its South American business development in an effort to move the business visitor from South Florida to Georgia. South Florida still is in a most competitive position. 1. We are closest to South America. 2. We have more Latin American corporate headquarters than any other city in the U.S. 3. We have the sun and warm temperatures. 4. We have the same shopping stores
VIEWPOINT that grace New York’s Fifth Avenue: Saks, Bonwit Teller, Neiman Marcus, and, yes, we have Walmart. 5. We have entertainment: casinos, fine restaurants, great hotels and something New York and Atlanta cannot duplicate — the combination of sunshine and sandy beaches. We must keep reminding the world that we are here and we want them here. We must put every available dollar into marketing South Florida. Businesses should joint venture with government in inviting South Americans to come and enjoy the many benefits of vacationing in South Florida. Given the choice of trudging though the snow and cold winds of New York, or the warmth of South Florida, seems like an easy decision. However, the world must be kept aware of our benefits or they will quickly forget and only see South Florida from the window of a mile-high jet.
Let’s not forget Northern Europe. They are living in the same snow and cold as New York. Invite them to shop and sun in South Florida and put the cold weather behind them for a few weeks. Our Saks Fifth Avenue is the same Sax Fifth Avenue they have in New York. Let’s scrape together every dollar of bed taxes collected for tourism development. Let’s ask business to kick in matching dollars to keep the image of South Florida in front of every South American and European that has any intentions of visiting America in the near future. Our South Florida life is depending on it!

Economy causing credit card interest rate spike Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY Some of us find ourselves stuck between a rock and a hard place. We’re forced to use our credit cards, but we wonder why our rates have been changing. I spoke with one mother of two who got a shock when she opened her latest credit card bill. One of her cards, which formerly had a limit of $2,500, now has had its limit lowered. In addition, one of her cards with a 7.99 percent interest rate now has a new rate of 25.9 percent. Naturally, that really upset her. So why are our credit card rates and fees going up now? The answer is pretty simple. The banks are facing decreasing profits. And to make more money, they’re raising their fees. And the only way they can make more money is get it from you and me. Here are a few things you may find in your next credit card bill. Check out the fine print to see if your interest rate is changing. Look for extra fees and charges for using “out of network” ATM’s. See if your credit card company is shortening its “grace periods” to give you less time to pay before adding in those expensive “late fees.” Greg McBride, a senior analyst for “Bankrate.Com,” says the banks are being hit with losses from foreclosed mortgages and other investments that have hurt their bottom line. He says that in order to make up for it, they’re tightening up the reins on their credit card customers. That’s why you need to consider paying cash as much as possible and to pay off your balances as soon as you can. Also, use your bank’s ATM’s to avoid “foreign” ATM fees and always look for lower rate cards. We know that the extra fees may be good for the bank’s bottom line, but not for our own. The higher the interest rate, the harder it becomes to pay off those larger balances. For most of us it’s hard enough when the rate is reasonable. Fortunately, help is on the way after Congressional hearings last fall detailed the latest abusive credit card practices facing consumers around the country. In July 2010, new federal consumer protection laws will go into effect that prohibit
many of the abusive practices credit cards companies are getting away with today. In the meantime, you may be wondering what’s the best way of beating them at their own game? For starters, cut up your cards and pay cash. And if you can’t pay cash today, put off the purchase until you can. NEWS YOU CAN USE For years, people have written to Pueblo, CO, to request copies of publications that answered all kinds of consumer questions, from getting a mortgage to setting up a college savings plan to beginning a healthy diet. Happily, all those low-cost or free publications are only a mouse click away at pueblo.gsa.gov. The site offers immediate information when you can’t wait to find out the answers to pressing questions like how to talk to your teen about alcohol or which sunscreen will best protect you on your tropical vacation. The site also offers information on health, education, travel, food, small businesses, cars, computers and federal programs and gives you the opportunity to read online or order a printed copy of the publication. If you don’t have a specific topic in mind to read up on, but want to be an overall educated consumer, check out the Publication of the Week section. You’ll find information on timely issues such as preparing your home for disasters or healthy eating at every age. Pueblo.gsa.gov also features the Consumer Focus, a monthly spotlight on consumer topics that affect your life, such as learning the basics of Web 2.0 or Medicare, written for busy people who don’t have time to dedicate to in-depth reading. For teachers, pueblo.gsa.gov offers free posters to spruce up classroom walls and age appropriate lesson plans to engage students using the valuable information contained on USA.gov and in the Consumer Action Handbook. Students can go on a virtual scavenger hunt where they learn about shopping safely online and protecting their privacy. They also can learn how to file a complaint letter or buy a car. No matter what the consumer question is, pueblo.gsa.gov gives you access to the information you need.

Volunteers of the Art of Living Foundation will launch a weeklong initiative to create a “Violence-Free, StressFree America.” The American Institute of Stress reports that “stress” is the No. 1 health problem that the United States faces, and that stress levels have escalated in adults, children, teenagers, and the elderly alike. What makes this issue more alarming is that, according to several studies, individual stress is the key cause of violence in society. This may be evident in the increase in domestic violence and the number of road rage incidences. No stranger to high-pressure situations, Miami resident Somya Khurana was a resident doctor at a local hospital working long hours, when she found out about the Art of Living course. “I was successful in my career but with the pressure to succeed I was stressed about maintaining that success and so I was unable to enjoy that success. A friend recommended the Art of Living course, a workshop that deals with stress relief and increasing energy levels through breathing techniques and practical wisdom. “It changed my life,” said Khurana, who is now practicing pediatric medicine. “I have a practical and easy technique to get rid of stress on a daily basis as well as increase my mental clarity and energy levels to endure long working hours.” From Feb. 17 to Feb. 24, more than 120 cities across the United States will join hands to combat the vicious cycle of stress and violence through the “StressFree, Violence-Free Society” campaign. This historic venture is being spearheaded by volunteers of the Art of Living Foundation and will feature the Art of Living course, a program that has been taught to and changed more than 25 million lives in 140 countries. Participants in this course will learn unique breathing techniques designed to reduce individual stress and, consequently, decreasing violence while increasing energy levels and human values in society. The cornerstone of the Art of Living course is a rhythmic breathing technique called the “Sudarshan Kriya,” developed in 1981 by Art of Living Founder, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. The technique is based on the yogic principle
that the breath possesses specific rhythms that can be used to naturally detoxify and energize the body. Independent studies of the Sudarshan Kriya have demonstrated its ability to lower cortisol (the “stress hormone”) and cholesterol, and to provide relief from depression and other symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder such as insomnia, fear, anxiety and grief. Volunteer-based, the Art of Living Foundation is an international, nonprofit, non-governmental organization that has brought trauma relief, conflict resolution and peace initiatives to more than 300 million people worldwide, many of them in areas devastated by war and natural disasters, including victims of Hurricane Katrina and 9-11. Sri Sri, who founded the Art of Living Foundation, launched the “ViolenceFree, Stress-Free America” campaign in

Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC. Then U.S. Senator (now Vice President) Joseph Biden, who opened the event, said, “The Art of Living Foundation…has an incredible, actually incredible, following that cuts through all religions, cultures and backgrounds — a very, very difficult thing to do in today’s world.” It is a foundation that is here to uplift society and serve all of humanity by strengthening the individual. In the mid 1950s, a 7-year-old, crushed by the classic symptoms of dyslexia, was the catalyst that sent Frances McGlannan to the Coco Plum Women’s Club Library in Coral Gables, looking for answers. Serendipity intervened when she found Dr. Samuel Orton’s original text. There in print was recognition of the unusual dyslexic symptoms observed, plus a rationale. For eight years following the discovery of Orton’s text, McGlannan continued her quest for answers through research, observation, years of tutoring at the University of Miami Reading Clinic, as well as the study of European professional journals. Her diligence resulted in the following: • The development of new multisensory teaching methods with an added associative component; • Adaptation of methods used to teach the blind and the deaf to teaching dyslexics; • Production of a linguistic curriculum, commercially unavailable at the time; • Establishment of an academically successful school with a unique scheduling system for the delivery of individualized teaching methods for each student; • Proof that multisensory techniques also can be used effectively in a group setting, and • Demonstrating that the dyslexic child can achieve success. McGlannan’s goal was to meet the needs of every child in each subject, in an ungraded program, rather than the lockstep approach of traditional education. With this goal in mind, McGlannan School was founded in 1964 by successfully adapting specific multisensory techniques and methods, previously reserved for the blind and deaf, to teach the dyslexic child. By 1966, McGlannan’s successful achievement of educating dyslexic children caught the interest of Norman Cousins, world-renowned political journalist and professor. As a result, an interview in New York City was arranged followed by a cover story in the Saturday Review focusing on the dyslexic teaching methods at McGlannan School. This soon was followed by additional articles describing the school in Time, Newsweek
The school maintains an exceptional staff of highly educated and certified instructors dedicated to academic success. and several other diverse publications. During the 1980s, reflecting the ethnic diversity in Florida, emphasis was placed on disseminating information to Central America, South America and the Caribbean. Articles about dyslexia and McGlannan teaching methods appeared in Buenhogar (Spanish version of Good Housekeeping), Vanidades (similar to Vogue), and on Spanish television documentaries in South America. An in-house training program for teachers from these countries was instituted. Today, with Frances McGlannan still at its helm, McGlannan School remains in full operation as a researchbased and academically rigorous education facility. An accredited private school, McGlannan serves students from ages 6 to 14 years, possessing average through superior intellectual ability, who are challenged by dyslexia and other forms of specific language learning difficulties. The school maintains an exceptional staff of highly educated and certified instructors dedicated to academic success. Each teacher is trained and educated in the effective use of McGlannan School’s specific multisensory educational methods and strategies for use in the classroom and in the reading clinic. At McGlannan School, academics are emphasized along with respect for each child’s dignity and the enhancement of self-esteem through positive reinforcement. By individualizing the proven methods and strategies, McGlannan’s continued goal is to accommodate each child’s learning style, in order to systematically and successively approximate the academics of local prominent schools for the purpose of future mainstreaming. McGlannan School is located at 10770 SW 84 St. in Kendall. For more information visit the website at <www.mcglannanschool.com>.

Mayfair Antique Market brings European flavor to the Grove BY ROBERT HAMILTON Productions SUD, the promoters behind the highly successful Lincoln Road Antiques and Collectibles Market, are bringing an indoor/outdoor antique show for a three-day weekend gathering every month to Coconut Grove’s MayfairShoppes. The Mayfair Antique show will have high-end antique dealers set-up inside the shopping center on Grand Avenue with an added attraction of tented vendors on the sidewalks of the Grove. This event revives a long running tradition of Grove indoor antique shows, which ended when the Convention Center closed two years ago. Future dates are: Feb. 13-15, Mar. 1315, Apr. 13-15 and May 8-9. Before there was a South Beach, Coconut Grove was the place to go to hang out, shop, dine and walk around any day or night. Home to the Coconut Grove Playhouse and funky shops, bars and cafes, it attracted free spirits of all ages looking for a bit of a bohemian experience. In the past few years, merchants and landlords have been recasting the Grove’s image using carefully themed events that appeal to that free spirit but draw in new and old shoppers looking for good times without being overwhelmed. “The Grove is holding its own against South Beach with events like the Mayfair Antiques Market,” said Steve LaCotta, president of the Grove Merchants Association. “In the last year we expanded our November Mad Hatter Art Festival, Taste of the Grove, SAIL regatta event and added Family Days and Sundays in the Grove to bring back street life and provide good quality entertainment and attractions for shoppers and visitors. We are drawing traffic from all market segments including tourists and are stimulating our core retail businesses.” The idea for the show is a collaborative effort among LaCotta, Coconut Grove Chamber president Lili Donnes and Productions SUD. The owners at Mayfair have provided additional support and encouragement.
“Events in the Grove have helped bring in crowds and add a fun element the district has been known for in the past,” said Ron Jakubisin of Mayfair. “Retailers are telling us they are also seeing more Europeans coming into their stores because they like the Grove atmosphere, so the Mayfair Antiques Market will also appeal to that market as well as anyone looking for an interesting way to spend a weekend afternoon or day.” The Antique Market will be the second weekend of every month. Dealers will set up early Friday morning and be open until 5 p.m. on Sundays. There will be free admission during the first season. Visitors will be able to stroll through a treasure trove of high–end antique paintings, furnishings, clothing, jewelry, objets d’art, collectibles and more in the indoor show, and then go outside to the lively collectibles market set up in tents along the Promenade and in nooks and crannies all over. “We have booked many dealers who used to exhibit at Coconut Grove Convention Center shows so people who have missed those dealers over the past two years will be happy to see them again,” said Tony Angione of Productions SUD. “The response from dealers has been exceptional, we are fully booked and are gong to expand for the February show.” Previous Grove antique shows attracted 4,000-5,000 people over three days and Angione expects similar traffic. “Visitors will also have the added benefit of being able to stroll around the Grove and get a bite or shop,” he added. A schedule of the Mayfair Antique Market is available at <www.antiquecollectiblemarket.com>. Potential dealers are asked to call 305-673-4991 for exhibit details and fees. Convenient parking is on-site in Mayfair garages or on the streets and lots in the Grove. The Mayfair Antiques Market is at 2911 Grand Ave. on the corner of the Promenade pedestrian mall between the two Mayfair buildings. For more information, the public can call 305-448-1700.

BY MARIE GUMA-DIAZ Two hundred years after the birth of famed naturalist and father of the modern evolutionary theory, Charles Darwin, his ideas are still inspiring new forms of scientific and artistic innovation. Dr. Richard Milner, a physical and cultural anthropologist, author of the Encyclopedia of Evolution and regular contributor to Natural History magazine, has created a one-man musical performance, Charles Darwin: Live and in Concert, that is entertaining audiences the world over. In commemoration of Darwin’s 200th birthday, on Feb. 16 at 6 p.m., Milner will bring his musical production to the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science at 4600 Rickenbacker Causeway (next to the Miami Seaquarium). The event is free to the public. Victorian naturalist Charles Darwin is brought to life by Richard Milner in a one-man musical filled with witty original songs, science, and madness. An author of award-winning books on Darwin and evolution, Milner’s unique lyrics have delighted audiences from
Germany to Australia. He appears as Darwin, Thomas Henry Huxley, A. R. Wallace, and Stephen Jay Gould, belts out a blues for the 1925 Scopes “Monkey Trial,” and somehow Maurice Chevalier and Jimmy Durante also get into the act. Darwin Day is an international celebration of the life and scientific accomplishments of Charles Darwin. The year 2009 marks the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of his groundbreaking On the Origin of Species. This presentation is sponsored by Ocean Research and Education Foundation, in partnership with the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science at the University of Miami. For more information, contact Laura Bracken at 305-421-4207 or by email at <lbracken@rsmas.miami.edu>. Founded in the 1940s, the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science has grown into one of the world’s premier marine and atmospheric research institutions. New family show opens at zoo’s Amazon and Beyond BY CINDY CASTELBLANCO Miami Metrozoo’s new theme area Amazon and Beyond now features an exciting 20-minute interactive show called Quetzal’s World for children and families. With an original script, Quetzal’s World begins with a costumed storyteller who plays the role of the Quetzal, a resplendent, near-threatened bird that has been revered as sacred by the Aztecs and Mayans for centuries, and admired as a symbol of beauty and freedom. The audience is transported to a magical time and place through stories and songs where an ecological mystery has occurred. By helping to solve the mystery, audience members learn about tropical American ecology and animal adaptations. Quetzal’s World incorporates concepts such as predation, defense, and the theme of adaptation, all within the ethical context of conservation. The performance is followed by the opportunity for audience members to ask questions and handle props and animal biological artifacts. “Our main goal for Quetzal’s World is to create an innovative and engaging theater experience for family audiences,” said Nestor Rodriguez, Zoological Society of Florida president and CEO. “We wish to provide teachers and students with an interactive education program that will enliven their tropical American curriculum through exploration of that region’s cultures and wildlife. “We also want to enhance all audiences’ knowledge of the relationships among plants, animals and people, and the conservation issues that threaten the rich biodiversity of tropical America. We want to promote awareness that our individual actions can make a difference in conservation, and that collectively, we can make a big impact both here at home and in tropical America.” Quetzal’s World is performed twice daily, 10:30 and 11:15 a.m., on weekdays and at 11:15 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. on weekends and holidays at Amazon and Beyond’s main stage. The show is made possible by a grant of $103,000 from the Institute of Museum and Library

Services (IMLS). Miami Metrozoo is the only zoo in Florida to receive funding from IMLS this year and one of only five zoos in the nation. IMLS grants support to institutions that wish to improve the understanding and appreciation of its educational programs. Miami Metrozoo, rated one of the top 10 zoos in the U.S. by Tripadvisor.com in 2008, houses more than 1,200 animals in a setting that approximates the animals’ natural habitats and provides visitors the feel of a safari. Large open air exhibits, a children’s zoo, tram rides, family cycles, a monorail and interactive exhibits make Miami Metrozoo, also named one of America’s Best Zoos and the “No. 1 Zoo for Pachyderms” in 2008 by The Intrepid Traveler, a unique experience for visitors of all ages. Romance in a Can Film Fest coming to Miami BY BRUCE BOBBINS Carice van Houten — the acclaimed Dutch film star who is currently starring opposite Tom Cruise in the hit movie Valkyrie and who electrified audiences as the German Jewish resistance fighter Rachel Stein in the 2007 film Black Book — will be the special guest during the Third Annual “Romance in a Can” (RIAC) Film Festival, presented by Eurocinema, Feb. 6-15, at indoor and outdoor venues throughout the Greater Miami area. Twenty-one independent first-run foreign feature films — featuring such international stars as Van Houten, as well as Juliette Binoche, Julie Delpy, Giancarlo Giannini, Derek Jacobi, Tovah Feldshuh, and Irène Jacob, and representing 15 countries — will make their big screen premieres on U.S. soil during the 10-day event, the only festival of romantic films in the U.S. The program also will include a tribute to the legendary Polish director, writer and actor Krzysztof Kieslowski, and a short film competition for film students from Europe and Miami area high schools. The program opens at the tropical Art Deco Raleigh Hotel in Miami Beach and closes at the legendary Barnacle State Park in Coconut Grove. RIAC — established by Red Chemistry Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the work of independent European filmmakers — pairs screenings of feature-length European films making their domestic debuts and the short film competition with an array of special events, while raising funds for youth arts programs. The award-winning short film will be purchased by Eurocinema for airing on its TV channel. Eurocinema is the first and only TV channel dedicated solely to pre-
senting foreign films to U.S. and North American audiences. It is available in some 25 million homes via Time Warner, Cablevision, Charter, DISH and DIRECTV, among other cable and satellite systems. Van Houten will participate in three programs during the film festival: A red carpet event honoring Dutch cinema and showcasing the U.S. big screen premiere of Love is All, in which she stars, on Friday, Feb. 13; a special Valentine’s Day event on Saturday, Feb. 14, and the closing night festivities on Sunday, Feb. 15. “We are honored that Carice van Houten will be our special guest this year,” said Isabelle Landman, executive director of Red Chemistry. “She has already captivated audiences in her native country with her magnificent and award-winning work on both the small and big screens. “Now, with Valkyrie and Black Book, as well as high-profile roles in such upcoming Hollywood pictures as Body of Lies, Repossession Mambo, and Vivaldi, her allure and beauty is electrifying American audiences. Indeed, she is classy, romantic, and glamorous — just like the films we will be showing throughout Romance in a Can. And preserving romance during Valentine’s week, far away from the war and violence, is the mission of this festival.” In addition to Love is All, which currently is being shown on the Eurocinema TV channel, other films making their U.S. big screen premieres include Forever (from Italy) with Giannini; Bye Bye Blackbird (from Luxembourg) with Jacobi; Love Life (from Germany and Israel) with Feldshuh, and three films Blue, White, and Red (from Poland), each directed by Kieslowski and starring, respectively, Binoche, Delpy, and Jacob.
Carice van Houten is co-star of Valkyrie and star of Black Book.
Other countries being represented at the festival are France, Spain, Switzerland, Belgium, Hungary, Russia, Estonia, and Finland. “We are so pleased to offer this Valentine’s Day present for lovers of European cinema throughout South Florida and across the country,” said Sebastien Perioche, founder and CEO of Eurocinema. “Not only will this festival be home to great award-
winning European films making their domestic debuts, but it will also be a fun and exciting atmosphere and a place where people want to be…like the ‘Art Basel’ of the film festival world.” For more information visit online at <www.eurocinema.com> or <www.romanceinacan.com>.

Miami Civic Music Association launches its 2008-09 season BY ROBERT HAMILTON The Miami Civic Music Association will present the 11th Annual Piano Gala on Feb. 15, at 4 p.m., featuring pianists Rosalina G. Sackstein, Paul Posnak, Tian Ying and Dennis Kam. This and other Miami Civic Music Association concerts will be in Gusman Concert Hall, 1314 Miller Dr. on the University of Miami’s Coral Gables campus. The concert will be dedicated to the memory of the composer and concert pianist Mana-Zucca, who was a prominent member of Miami’s music world for many years. Also appearing will be pianists Jose Ignacio Diaz Ysomar Granados, Laura Keith, Diana Limeres, Alejandro Mendez, Maria Beatriz Sellek, Leila Torres and Megan Walsh — all graduates from the Frost School of Music who are now performing professionally. Rosalina G. Sackstein and her daughter, flutist Rosy Sackstein, will perform a Mana-Zucca composition dedicated to her daughter. She and her grandchildren — Andrew, Matthew and Alina Roitstein, and Danielle and David Sackstein — will present a special arrangement of Eliseo Grenet’s Cuban classic, Drume Negrita. All proceeds from this concert will benefit the Rosalina G. Sackstein Piano Scholarship Fund at the Frost School of Music. Other programs for the season include: The Conjunto Iberico Cello Octet returns to the series with a performance on Sunday, Mar. 15, at 4 p.m. The group, conducted by Elias Arizcuren, is based in Amsterdam and is composed of eight young cellists from
around Europe. Their programs feature works by composers from Spain such as Turina, Rodrigo and Granados as well as pieces by contemporary composers who have written works especially for the Octet. This time they will be joined by mezzosoprano Elena Gragera from Spain. On Saturday, Mar. 28, at 8 p.m., pianist Paul Posnak from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami; Jules Eskin, principal cellist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and Ethan Sloane, clarinet and professor of woodwinds at Boston University, will come together for an evening of chamber music. The trio’s performance at Festival Miami 2002 was praised by critics as one of the highlights of the event. Pianist Daniel Lessner will perform Sunday, May 3, at 4 p.m. Lessner, a Miami native now based in Los Angeles, was an audience favorite in his last recital for Civic two years ago. In addition to his performing career he is a successful composer for television and films. His recent South American tour received critical acclaim. Lessner performs frequently in the Los Angeles area. His April 2008 performance of Bach’s Goldberg Variations at Chapin Hall, Williams College was praised for “individuality” and “freshness of interpretation.” He was invited to return to South America in October 2008 to perform Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto at Teatro Oriente in Santiago, Chile. Tickets are $30 general admission. Student tickets are available at the door. Call 305-271-8449 for additional information.

New year brings thoughts of love to Cauley Square BY SHERRY MILLER The New Year brings new vibrations that fill the air with love and especially at Cauley Square Historic Railroad Village in South Miami Dade County. The 10-acre historic railroad village site is the last of its type in the state of Florida and one of the last in the entire United States. “Visitors come from around the world to experience the history of this country here in the Village,” said Frances Varela, owner and operator of Cauley Square. “There’s just no place like it,” continued the petite business woman who has transformed and preserved the historic site from hurricane devastation to total refurbishment throughout the flowering grounds and lush tropical foliage. South Florida’s public television station, WLRN, recently showcased the property as one of the foremost attractions of the area. The cottages, grounds, historic red train caboose, statued fountains, patio’s and cobble-stoned pathways make unique, one-of-a-kind photographic backgrounds for brides, families, travelers or romantic couples. This Valentine’s Day, Saturday, Feb. 14, from 6 to 10 p.m., both the Tea Room and the Village Chalet restaurants will be serving special menus by candlelight and roses with appropriate background music. Cost for dinner is around $100 per couple (plus tax and gratuity) and includes appetizer, dessert
The cottages, grounds, historic red train caboose, statued fountains, patio’s and cobblestoned pathways make unique, one-of-a-kind photographic backgrounds for brides, families, travelers or romantic couples. and a bottle of wine. Some 20 Cottage Shops adjacent to the restaurants will be exhibiting Valentine gifts that will make yesterday’s memories today’s treasures. Cauley Square Historic Railroad Village is open to the public with free parking Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. Shops are closed on Mondays. The Tea Room and the Village Chalet restaurants are open seven days a week with “Happy Hour” every second Friday of each month from 7 to 10 p.m. with live music. Cauley Square is located at 22400 Old Dixie Hwy. in Goulds. For information, call direct to 305258-3543 or visit online at <www.cauleysquare.com>. For Valentine’s dinner reservations at the Tea Room, call 305-258-0044, and the Village Chalet, call 305-258-8900.

Saab 9-3 lineup sees minor changes for 2009 Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS The Saab 9-3 lineup was given a major exterior redesign in the 2008 model year and there is little visible change for 2009. The Saab 9-3 model range includes the 9-3 Sport Sedan, 9-3 SportCombi and 9-3 Convertible in 2.0T and Aero models. A new “Aero-look” exterior appearance package is an option for 2.0T Sport models, while other new enhancements include interior trim, roof rail and wheel changes, as well as new standard OnStar 8.0 hardware that enables Turn-by-Turn Navigation and Bluetooth hands-free calling. The Saab 9-3 models incorporate design cues of the Aero X Concept, including the powerful front end, larger grille with smaller side grilles and a semi-overwrapping hood. The headlights wrap around the fenders to the flanks and accommodate the
Xenon cornering headlamps (standard on the Aero), which adjust horizontally in conjunction with the steering for greater visibility. The headlight design and monochromatic doors and bumpers give the 9-3 a sleeker, cleaner and faster look. SportCombi models have a more aerodynamic roof-rail design, while matte chrome-finish roof rails are available on the Aero SportCombi. Sport Sedan buyers can choose an Aerotype appearance and performance package that includes dual bright-finish tailpipes, sport-bolstered seats, metallic interior decor, upgraded brakes, a sporttuned chassis and new sportier 17-inch five-spoke alloy wheels. All Aero FWD Convertibles and XWD-equipped 9-3 models have the new alloy wheels. Eighteeninch wheels with performance-rated tires are an option on Aero XWD models. Saab’s XWD (cross-wheel-drive) technology has been added as an option on the 2.0T Sport Sedan and SportCombi models and a more powerful 280 hp engine is standard on all V-6 Aero models. Originally available in 2008 only on the V-6-equipped Turbo X or Aero Sport Sedan and SportCombi models,
Saab 9-3 Aero sedan has larger grille, an overwrapping hood and headlights that wrap around the fenders.
the Haldex Gen 4 XWD system gives more functionality to four-cylinder 2.0T (turbocharged) models. The 9-3 2.0T models equipped with XWD technology are available with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission and feature a more comfortfocused chassis setting. Saab’s XWD cross-wheel-drive is an active-on-demand system that is activated only when required, minimizing the impact on fuel economy while giving the car a sure-footed dynamic feel. It’s
designed to optimize vehicle handling and stability in all driving conditions. This all-wheel-drive system includes two innovative features: Pre-emptive engagement of the rear wheels to optimize traction at the start, and an electronically controlled rear limited-slip differential.
