Park expansion study gets Souto’s support Commissioner Martinez swears in 2010 WKBA chair, directors E BY RICHARD YAGER
xpansion of Indian Hammocks Park to provide a community center, swimming pool and skate park needs Miami-Dade County Commission action to study potential land acquisitions, according to a Park and Recreation Department spokesperson. Asked to comment because the park lies within his district, Commissioner Javier Souto proposed that such a study include a comprehensive feasibility report on acquisition of the “Haven” property and relocations of adjacent county facilities. The department is seeking to expand the park and is interested in acquiring a portion
of the adjacent “Haven Center” property, said Edith Torres, Parks Department PIO. Preliminary research concerning the acquisition of that property already has been conducted, she added. An assessment of adjacent county-owned properties is required to determine what areas could accommodate new park facilities targeted for $6 million development funding under the Building Better Communities (BBC) bond issue in years 2014 through 2017. A statement from Souto’s aide, Bernardo Escobar, said, “Commissioner Souto would like to sponsor a resolution directing the

iami-Dade Commissioner Joe A. Martinez helped pass the torch to the new chair of the West Kendall Business Association (WKBA), while commending the accomplishments of its most recent leader, during ceremonies on Jan. 28 at Signature Gardens. Commissioner Martinez presented WKBA’s outgoing chair, Jorge F. Peña, with a commendation and praised him for his many years of dedicated service. The commissioner then installed the association’s 2010 board of directors and introduced the new chair, Frank E. Irizarry Jr., of FirstBank Florida. “The residents and business owners in the West Kendall area generate more tax
dollars than what is returned to our area through county services,” said Commissioner Martinez, a resident of West Kendall for more than 20 years. “Yet, this fact does not deter us from wanting to improve and expand our business relations. “Business owners and community leaders have the responsibility of establishing the characteristics for the West Kendall business community to make it more attractive and accommodating to local residents.” West Kendall is one of the fastest growing residential and business communities in Miami-Dade County. As of 2005, the community had more than 4,900 businesses employing over 41,000 people. For information on the West Kendall Business Association, visit online at <www.westkendallbusiness.com>.

EXPANSION, from page 1 –––– mayor or the mayor’s designee to provide a report to the Board of County Commissioners in 90 days identifying alternatives for expanding Kendall Indian Hammocks Park in order to serve the growing needs of the Kendall Community for regional facilities like a community/senior center, a swimming pool and a skate park, while preserving the limited open green space and tree canopy of this park. “The feasibility study should include, but not be limited to exploring the acquisition of the abandoned and derelict former Haven Center Property (which has many unsafe structures that need to be demolished and is currently a health hazard and public nuisance).” Souto’s study proposal would also include “relocation of the Solid Waste Transfer Station, relocation of Parks Department maintenance buildings, reconfiguration of the DHS [Department of Human Services] cottage parcels, reconfiguration of existing surface parking areas to neighboring county or school board-owned property or the acquisition of other parcels adjacent to the park.” A planning and public involvement process for Indian Hammocks Park funded by BBC revenue was completed recently at a cost of approximately $60,000, including a site review, archaeological assessment, and park-planning program, Torres noted.
The aquatic center was one of several new facilities suggested during a Parks Department three-month study that gained initial public support during an Oct. 30, 2008 input session. In a second meeting in March 2009, parents of autistic youngsters and physically challenged adult children urged approval of a swimming pool for therapeutic exercise to assist those afflicted with the debilitating trauma. Disc golf enthusiasts asked that their courses not be taken for future developmental planning. A presentation of proposed planning was made to Kendall’s Community Council 12 in May 2009 by Maria Nardi, section supervisor for Miami-Dade Parks. It included a consultant’s presentation locating a new aquatic center, senior center and dog park in a southeast area of the 105-acre parkland. The proposal led council members to ask for long-range park development planning following an hour’s discussion by more than 100 residents. Council member Angela Vazquez, representing the sub-area where the park is located, asked for a study of adjoining county-owned land that can be acquired for expanding structural facilities rather than building on existing greenscaped areas. Carla Ascencio-Savola wanted potential land acquisition extended to an abandoned county building adjacent to a fire-rescue motor pool, north of the park, while Jorge Garciga recommended a stepped-development program over 15 years for council review.

Bulldozers level old buildings near park
Structures have been cleared from former Haven property. (The Palace is in background.) ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– BY RICHARD YAGER
Bulldozers have leveled remaining structures on a 22-acre tract at 11300 SW 80 St., site of the former Haven Center community that once aided residents with developmental disabilities. The vacated land lies immediately north of The Palace senior residential community buildings and east of SW 114th Avenue. Sunrise Communities took over administration of the Haven property several years ago when that community closed group facilities housing aged residents with disabilities, according to Margaret Feldman, a spokesperson for Sunrise. “There are no plans for a new development under consideration,” she said. “We only cleared away remaining structures on the
property for safety and security reasons.” Sunrise, a national private, non-profit organization with a 45-year background as a leading provider of disability support services for all ages, is headquartered in Miami at 9040 Sunset Dr. Facilities are located in 16 Florida counties as well as Alabama, Connecticut, Maryland, Tennessee and Virginia. The Haven property adjoins Indian Hammocks Park and other county-held properties to the north, including a Parks Department maintenance and storage yard. Location of the Haven Center and facilities such as operated by the nearby Community Habilitation Center (CHC) of Miami on the county land are permitted uses under deed restrictions when the former farmland was obtained by the county, according to Edith Torres, PIO for the Miami-Dade Parks Department.

From estate homes to office building Michael Miller EXECUTIVE EDITOR
AROUND TOWN For years, overgrown trees surrounded the corner of SW 95th Street and SW 117th Avenue where an architect built a home during the 1960s. Within recent years, a cleared landscape revealed a concretestyled exterior, soon painted with graffiti. In 2006, Community Council 12 heard its Kendall property owner, Alfredo Garcia-Menocal, an abutting resident, ask to build four estate-type homes on that three-acre corner. His application was denied by both the Council and County Commissioners when neighbors protested it would destroy the longtime character of the area. A master planning amendment adopted in 2008 now allows residential areas to become office sites if in a “transitional”
state—meaning, as we understand it, close enough to an established path of existing commercial development that its residential use could be designated for offices under the statute’s specialized parameters. In January, Garcia-Menocal won the Council’s approval for changing the property’s land use for a professional office center. There was no reason to deny it as a permitted use under the new code provision. Now designated as a RU-5A SemiProfessional Office District, the parcel sprouted a “For Sale” sign last week, particularly galling to nearby residents who originally turned down the estate residences and protested the office land use change, as well. However, it’s all within legal bounds as master planning becomes stretched to consider economic realities (on behalf of ownership) while attempting to balance preservation of established neighborhood values. Or so the experts tell us. It’s a story retold time and time again throughout Kendall, along Bird Road east
‘For Sale’ sign springs up on former estate home site.

Community will miss Sorenson’s representation on commission R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY Katy Sorenson recently announced that she will not run for reelection this fall, opening up the race to what will more than likely be a number of candidates running for her seat on the commission dais. We will miss her. Rare are the times I have disagreed with Sorenson’s position on an issue before our illustrious county commission. She has, more often than not, been on the minority side of a debate whether it is the expansion of the UDB (Urban Development Boundary), or the taxpayers financing the Marlins baseball stadium for a team owned by one of the wealthiest members of our community. A strong opposing voice is important. I hope that she will still be in her seat on the commission when the subject of spending $250 million of taxpayer money to put a roof on the football stadium comes up for
debate. I am quite sure she will vote “no” on the question. Katy has a progressive view of where our community should be heading and at the same time she always defends our precious tax dollars from being spent on projects that do not deserve our support. Sorenson announced her plans to join the University of Miami in developing a leadership initiative program that will encourage citizens who show a desire to seek public office. Many qualified citizens — individuals we would like to see as a commissioner or mayor of any of our municipalities, or fill a state or county office — would benefit from the program. The idea of developing a leadership initiative program for public service is exciting. The need surely exists. Commissioner Sorenson is more than qualified to head the program. The University of Miami will be supported financially by the Knight Foundation and the Dade Community Foundation in this endeavor. The idea of breaking into politics in Miami-Dade is daunting. The last candidate to successfully defeat a sitting county commissioner was Sorenson’s success-
–– VIEWPOINT –– ful race against then Commissioner Larry Hawkins 16 years ago. It is considered almost impossible to defeat a sitting commissioner. It seems only “death” or “indictment” can remove a commissioner. Current law permits a sitting county commissioner to run and hold his or her seat forever. Political action groups have been trying to convince voters to support term limits but the incumbents have been successful in defeating this initiative, with the financial help of Miami-Dade’s numerous lobbyists, to hang onto their seats. Sorenson will team with William Green, UM’s dean of undergraduate education, to develop the political support program in January 2011. I am most pleased to see that the University of Miami is expanding into a “local” political development program. In recent years the university has
been nationally recognized for its programs in the international arena. And, as important as a global outlook is concerned, we truly need to look inward at the needs of our local political community. It looks like the partnership of Sorenson and the university will meet that goal. We wish them success. We will miss your vote, Katy Sorenson, on the board of county commissioners. I hope your replacement will hold similar ideals. We appreciate your opinions on this column whether in agreement or disagreement. You can make money at home, but beware Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY In these difficult times, with unemployment reaching record levels, many people are looking for nontraditional ways of securing their income. If you’re having trouble finding a job the conventional way, you may be able to put your skills and hobbies to work and never even leave home. Neda Sharp is a customer service representative for LiveOps. Her office is just down the hall from her kitchen. “I had a traditional job working 9 to 5, commuting to work every day, and I was looking for another way to earn income, she said. What started off as a way to earn extra income is now a full-time job, and Neda rakes in an impressive $150 a day. “It helps tremendously, she said. “That money goes directly to pay bills. West Hayden is the president of LiveOps, where the number of people applying for jobs has jumped 11 percent since last August. He said the company has roughly 20,000 people who take calls from their homes. You don’t have to have a college degree, Hayden said. “We have people that don’t have a formal education at all, but who have an aptitude for talking to people on the phone. LiveOps is just one of dozens of companies that offer work-at-home jobs. Some of them do prefer degrees.
For example, Amy Lyons, a former schoolteacher, now works for tutor.com. She puts in about 10 hours a week, but still makes $500 a month. This company has seen a 35 percent increase in applications in the past four months. There were “no fees, there was no software to purchase,â€? she said. “The only thing I needed was a laptop.â€? Unlike the others, Amy Stewart works full-time, but also earns extra money selling her crafts on Etsy.com. She pays the company a small percentage of her sales and still makes $300 a month. “I wouldn’t have a presence in Europe if I didn’t have an Etsy site that people could get to online,â€? she said. One big bonus for Neda and the others is flexibility while still earning good money from the comfort of home. Neda calls her work a “great opportunity.â€? But it’s important you make sure it’s a legitimate opportunity. Watch out for these red flags: • Companies insisting on hefty fees upfront; • A promise you’ll make thousands of dollars in a week, and • A request for a credit card to secure the job offer. As I’ve said time and time again — never give anyone money upfront for anything — and never share your personal information. Unfortunately, in these difficult times, there are numerous scammers more than willing to take advantage of your misfortunes. Watch Al Sunshine’s “4 Your Moneyâ€? reports Monday-Friday beginning at noon. You may find Al’s blog at <www.cbs4.com/4yourmoney>.

IHOP’s free pancake giveaway to generate funds for charity BY TERRY WILLS
IHOP — one of America’s favorite restaurants for breakfast, lunch and dinner — has announced plans to serve millions of free pancakes again this year in celebration of National Pancake Day on Tuesday, Feb. 23. Planned as a celebration of friends, family and community, IHOP hopes the program will raise $1.75 million for Children’s Miracle Network, an international non-profit organization that supports children’s hospitals, and other worthy local causes. 2010 will mark IHOP’s fifth year celebrating the national event, and the company has set an ambitious goal to raise a cumulative $5 million for charity in the first five years of its free flapjack philanthropic effort. More than 1,400 IHOP restaurants throughout the United States once again will invite guests to enjoy a free short stack of IHOP’s signature buttermilk pancakes from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on National Pancake Day. In return, IHOP guests are asked to donate what they would have paid for the free pancakes, or more, to the Children’s Miracle Network hospital in their community, or another designated local cause. “We are flipping for ‘five in five’ with our 2010 National Pancake Day campaign, and with our guests’ generous support, plan to reach our goal of $5 million in five years,” said Carolyn O’Keefe, IHOP’s sen-
ior vice president, marketing. “IHOP’s franchisees and guests have raised more than $3.25 million to support Children’s Miracle Network and other local charities since we started our National Pancake Day in 2006. The day has become a tradition for families and friends who wish to enjoy great food and great service while helping out a great cause.” Children’s Miracle Network “Miracle Balloons” are being sold for $1 and $5 each, and personalized and displayed at participating IHOP restaurants through Feb. 23. Miracle Balloon sales offer guests another way to show their support of Children’s Miracle Network and contribute to the National Pancake Day fundraising effort. The $5 balloons offer a $5 bounce back offer for guests to enjoy on their next visit to IHOP. In 2009, IHOP gave away three million pancakes and raised nearly $1.5 million in support of Children’s Miracle Network and other local charities, far exceeding its goal to raise $1 million. Since starting its National Pancake Day celebration in 2006, IHOP has given away more than 6.1 million free pancakes to benefit children’s charities — that stacks up more than 53.5 miles high. Informed families to present evening with Joseph Califano BY JOSE BOZA
Informed Families/The Florida Family Partnership is partnering with former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and South Miami Hospital’s Addiction Treatment Center to present an evening of “straight talk,” focusing on keeping children substancefree, with Joseph A. Califano Jr., chair and president of the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University. The event will take place on Thursday, Feb. 18, 7-8:30 p.m., at the Victor E. Clarke Education Center in South Miami Hospital. Califano, former U.S. Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare, started the nation’s first anti-smoking campaign and is the author of the new book How to Raise a Drug-Free Kid: The Straight Dope for Parents. During the event, Califano will share almost 20 years worth of insight and research on what really prevents children from using drugs and alcohol, and will help parents understand that they have the greatest influence on their children’s decision to use drugs and alcohol. The presentation is based on his newly published Simon & Schuster Touchstone/Fireside book, which serves as comprehensive, straightforward, usable guide to keeping children drug free during their formative pre-teen, teen and college years. Along with South Miami Addiction Treatment Center, a part of South Miami Hospital, other sponsors include Baptist Health South Florida and AvMed. Limited seating is available for the event. Topical Antifungals for Ringworm
Rosa Sklavounos “The Trusted Voice”
Your Palmetto Bay Realtor
BY SONIA MARTINEZ, RPH
Ringworm (also known as tinea) is not a worm, but a kind of skin fungus that appears in a round-shaped itchy patch and has gradually outwards spreading borders. You can identify ringworm symptoms if you find circular patches on your skin that are reddish towards the border and paler in the center. Ringworm develops in a moist, tropical climate and exposure to damp soil and infected pets are often responsible for their spread. Ringworm is contagious in nature and if you use personal objects of an infected person, you can develop ringworm symptoms. Over-the-counter (OTC) topical antifungal creams are usually adequate for treatment of ringworm. While newer products containing terbinafine or butenafine are often recommended, older medications such as clotrimazole and miconazole may still be effective, but they may need to be used longer. Creams and solutions usually work better than sprays and powders, and solutions may be preferred for hairy areas. Because the infection usually extends further than the visible rash, it is good to apply the antifungal to the affected area and one to two inches beyond the rash. Terbinafine or butenafine need to be used for at least 1 to 2 weeks and clotri-

Southern comfort food with a twist at Smoke’t The co-owners of Smoke’t Southern Kitchen and Tap in Coral Gables and Town Kitchen and Bar in South Miami, are (l-r) Brandon Lurie, Michael Altman and John Janette.
BY NANCY EAGLETON
It was chilly outside, but smokin’ hot inside at the January grand opening of Smoke’t Southern Kitchen and Tap, located on S. Dixie Highway (US1) in the former JJ’s Diner space in Coral Gables. Co-owners Brandon Lurie, John Janette and Michael Altman, of the highly successful Town Kitchen and Bar in South Miami, opened their second neighborhood dining spot, giving locals a hip, down-to-earth setting where they can meet friends, watch sporting events and enjoy Southern eats that will satisfy every taste bud and budget. “The menu was really important to us,” said Altman who serves as executive chef. “We wanted to offer our customers sophisticated Southern food, which until now didn’t exist in this area. “After hundreds of tastings, we developed many Southern-inspired delicacies for our menu such as barbecue pork sushi rolls filled with coleslaw and served with a homemade spicy barbecue dipping sauce, pepper jack cheese-filled hushpuppies, and of course, ribs, brisket, and other items from the in-house smoker.” Smoke’t Southern Kitchen and Tap specializes in Southern pit barbecue, showcasing various regional flavors from the U.S. Order up the Texas style beef brisket, Kansas City baby back ribs, Memphis style dry rub spare ribs or Carolina pulled pork — all served with their award winning barbecue sauce. Traditional Southern foods such as deepfried chicken, brussel sprouts, okra and tomatoes, country fried steak, cornbread, mashed potatoes, fried catfish and berry cobblers will satisfy every comfort-food craving. The delicious eats may be down home, but the restaurant’s style and ambience is hip and

Great pedestrian energy comes from the surrounding offices, downtown South Miami and the University of Miami.” If you visited Smoke’t during its first month open, you probably noticed the stage. The music plays when the weekend rolls in. Get “unplugged” every Thursday at 8 p.m.; rock to the house deejay every Friday night at 10 p.m., and get “wired” for the work week Sundays at 8 p.m. Smoke’t features a full liquor bar with a large bourbon and signature drink menu, 12 beers on tap and over 50 bottled beer choices, as well as a savvy wine program. Look for Smoke’t to introduce Reggae Brunch and College Night sometime soon. “This area needed a hip, comfortable place for locals to meet with friends and neighbors, watch the game and enjoy excellent food and drinks, all served by a staff who recognizes them and makes them feel comfortable,” Janette said. “The response so far has been tremendous.” Smoke’t Southern Kitchen and Tap is located at 1450 S. Dixie Hwy. in Coral Gables and is open daily for lunch at 11:30 a.m., with dinner service beginning 5:30 p.m. The restaurant closes at 10 p.m. Sunday through Tuesday and 11 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.

Robert M. Heuer to be honored with 25th anniversary tribute BY JUSTIN MOSS
Robert M. Heuer, Florida Grand Opera general director and CEO, will be honored on Thursday, Feb. 25, with a Tribute Concert in the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami Dade County’s Sanford and Dolores Ziff Ballet Opera House, followed by a black-tie dinner on the Lynn Wolfson Stage, in celebration of his 25th anniversary as general director of Florida Grand Opera. Lynn Wolfson, arts philanthropist and director emeritus of Florida Grand Opera, is honorary chair of the Robert M. Heuer 25th Anniversary Tribute Concert and Dinner Committee and a major benefactor of the event. Jane A. Robinson, FGO board chair, and Dr. Morton J. Robinson, a member of the board of directors, are event chairs. Florida Grand Opera, founded in 1941, has been led by only three general directors in its 69 year history of continuous programming: founding general director Arturo di Filippi, Robert Herman, and Heuer, who assumed the leadership role in 1985, following six years with the company as director of production and, later, assistant general director. Under Heuer’s leadership, the company, then known as Greater Miami Opera Association, merged with the Opera Guild Inc. of Fort Lauderdale in 1994 to create Florida Grand Opera, which enabled the company to present its mainstage productions in both Miami and Fort Lauderdale. In 2006 Miami performances moved from Dade County Auditorium, where they had been given since 1951, to the Sanford and Dolores Ziff Ballet Opera House in the new Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami Dade County. Seaquarium announces stingray exhibit and free annual passes
Miami Seaquarium has opened its interactive stingray exhibit. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– BY MICHELLE PALOMINO
Florida residents have something to cheer about during the month of February as the free annual pass promotion at Miami Seaquarium returns. In addition, the park has unveiled its new interactive stingray exhibit that allows guests the opportunity to feel the gentle glide of Southern and Cownose stingrays across their fingers. The free annual pass is available to Florida residents with the purchase of a one day general admission ticket through Feb. 28. The pass allows guests to visit the park as often as they wish through Dec. 31, including the extremely popular Easter Egg Hunts, Splashtacular Summer Events, Monster Splash Halloween Bash and Winter Nights & Lights. The pass has no blackout dates and is not combinable with any other offer or discount. The interactive stingray exhibit is included with general admission to the park. “Miami Seaquarium is always looking
for new ways to entertain and educate our guests, while giving them affordable options to visit us throughout the year,” said Andrew Hertz, general manager of Miami Seaquarium. “Increasingly our guests have told us that they want to interact with our animals,” he said. “Our guests have been able to get up close and personal with our dolphins for several years, we are pleased that now we can introduce another interactive experience at Miami Seaquarium.” The Free Annual Pass also provides discounts on Miami Seaquarium education and camp programs, dolphin interaction programs at Dolphin Harbor, park merchandise and much more. Miami Seaquarium Annual Pass Holders also receive a 20 percent discount on general admission to other South Florida attractions. General admission to Miami Seaquarium is $37.95 and $27.95 for children (ages 39). More information on Miami Seaquarium is available online at <www.miamiseaquarium.com>.

Chris Bohjalian to discuss his latest novel, Secrets of Eden BY SARAH BREIVOGEL From New York Times bestselling novelist Chris Bohjalian comes Secrets of Eden, a story of shattered faith, intimate secrets, and the delicate nature of sacrifice. With book after book, Bohjalian continues to garner widespread critical acclaim for his realistic and provocative writing. Over the years, he has brought to life midwives, foster children, animal-rights activists, and the homeless — while illuminating the communities they live in and the complicated choices they face. Set in contemporary New England, Bohjalian’s latest novel, Secrets of Eden (Shaye Areheart Books, Feb. 2, 2010), shines the light on the issue of domestic violence. Written with Chris’ elegant, page-turning prose, the book builds to the sort of ending that left millions of readers of The Double Bind and Midwives speechless and stunned — and hungry for his next novel. While many of Bohjalian’s novels are issues oriented, Secrets of Eden is the first to emerge from readers’ responses to one of his previous works. The origins of this narrative came from stories Bohjalian heard from women across the country who had read The Once again, Bohjalian has given us a rivDouble Bind and wanted eting page-turner in which nothing is to know how he had precisely what it seems. 2010 Terrain is GMC’s all-new crossover SUV Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS The all-new 2010 GMC Terrain has a lot to get excited about. It’s a five-passenger crossover SUV with distinctive styling, and some new technology to deliver better gas mileage. The Terrain rides on a 112.5-inch wheelbase and has a four-wheel independent suspension system, with wide front and rear tracks for a better ride and handling. A new 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with direct injection powers the Terrain and it gets an impressive 32 mpg on the highway. Maximum fuel economy is achieved in part with an “eco” mode activated by pressing a button on the console. A 3.0-liter DOHC 264 hp direct-injected V-6 engine is another option. Both engines are mated to sixspeed automatic transmissions and frontwheel-drive and all-wheel-drive models are offered in SLE and SLT trim levels. The Terrain is easy on the eyes with a balanced, athletic stance. It has angular sur-
faces and muscular fender flares, with a strong front-end characterized by squaredoff edges and a three-element grille accented by a chrome surround and projectorbeam headlamps mounted in large, rectangular housings. On the inside, the Terrain interior is comfortable and luxurious, with contrasting stitching and materials that create a quality look throughout the cabin. A floating center stack is highlighted by ambient lighting and houses the comfort and convenience controls. The Terrain also has an abundance of storage space, with numerous compartments suitable for a variety of items, including an oversized glove box, a closed storage area in the instrument panel above the center stack, another under the center armrest that is large enough for a laptop computer and two-tier storage in the doors. The seats are comfortable and the standard MultiFlex sliding rear seat can be moved fore or aft almost eight inches for more passenger comfort or greater rear cargo capacity. The 60/40-split rear seatback offers additional configurations for passengers and cargo. There also are four auxiliary power outlets in the rear cargo area. The Terrain comes with a lengthy list of
