Killian’s ‘Law Team’ strong in Mock Trial Competition

illian Senior High School’s student “Mock Law” team has reason to celebrate, according to Lorraine Silverstein, law studies teacher who has taught 40 years of social studies at the Kendall school, as well as directing the annual “We the People” and “Moot Court” extra-curricular activities. “We had our best Mock Trial finish in years,” said Silverstein, who wanted equal credit extended to the Killian team’s legal advisor, attorney Mitchell Panter of the Panter Panter & Sampredo law firm, as well as her student lawyers. “We’ve rarely had anyone so involved as attorney Panter,” Silverstein said. “Would you believe he even answered a student’s email question at 10 o’clock at night from his seat at a basketball game?” Such devotion by teacher and the attorney-coach gained Killian the highest placement for a public school in the 26th annual countywide Mock Trial Competition, cosponsored by Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the Young Lawyers Section of the Dade County Bar Association. he Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Southern Region Airports Division has named Michael J. Handrahan, manager of the Kendall-Tamiami Executive Airport as its 2009 General Aviation Airport Manager of the Year. That’s when Scoutmaster Fernando Valle had a few words with the boys. “I challenged the Scouts early in the year,” he said. “If we get six Eagles, I’ll take off my hair. If we get one more, I’ll shave my beard, too.” Assistant Scoutmaster Pablo Cianci got into the spirit of things. He told the boys if there were one more boy, an eighth, who completed his Eagle project and was approved by the Board of Review, he also would shave his head. COPPOLA The DentaQuest Foundation is joining with Health Foundation of South Florida, The Children’s Trust, and two Miami community health centers to introduce the new Healthy Smiles in Our Schools program to Bent Tree Elementary School in West Kendall. The goal of Healthy Smiles in Our Schools is to increase the number of children receiving preventive and restorative dental care and to deliver these services in a practical and cost-effective way — at school where the children spend most of their day. The program, which began at Bent Tree on Monday, Mar. 15, will be piloted in 17 other schools in Miami-Dade County in an effort to improve the oral health of South Florida’s children. In December, the DentaQuest Foundation lent its support to Healthy Smiles in Our Schools with two grants, each worth $50,000, awarded to Borinquen Health Care Center and to Community Health of South Florida, which are providing the dental services. The grants allowed the two health centers to purchase portable dental equipment and supplies for this new at-school oral health program. Health Foundation of South Florida provided $69,000 to fund the technical assistance that was needed to implement the program. “Progress in addressing oral health disparities requires the support and engagement of the entire community. Equipped with effective tools and knowledge, community leaders, parents, healthcare providers, educators and the general public can more easily tack-
le oral health problems,” explained Ralph Fuccillo, DentaQuest Foundation president. “Working together, we can bring effective solutions to communities and help children receive the oral health services that are so crucial to their long-term success.” Dental disease, also known as tooth decay, is the most common chronic childhood disease, five times more common than asthma. It also is preventable with proper care. Good oral health is an important part of a child’s overall well being, especially as they and their teeth are developing. The Healthy Smiles in Our Schools program provides dental exams and treatment. These are crucial to identify risks and help prevent more serious problems from occurring such as tooth decay and gum disease. Without regular prevention measures like exams and sealants on molars, dental disease often goes untreated and can result in cavities, pain and infection. Untreated dental disease can interfere with a child’s learning, speech and eating, leading to poor nutrition and problems in school. For the participating health center dental programs, the school-based program is an opportunity to provide necessary preventive care to children in Miami-Dade County and to introduce their families to the health centers for ongoing, comprehensive healthcare. These grants support the mission of the DentaQuest Foundation to strengthen community initiatives and strategies, to strengthen the dental care safety net, to increase access to care for vulnerable children, and ultimately, to improve oral health.

He is well deserving of this honor.” Handrahan collaborated with local fire and rescue departments to develop an enhanced training program for firstresponders who are not based at or familiar with the airport. Firefighters were trained on critical general aviation aircraft systems and to identify unique conditions inherent at the busy general aviation airports. The result is decreased response times to aviation incidents by mutual aid departments, and a reduced risk of runway incursions. Handrahan worked closely with the communities surrounding KendallTamiami Airport to overcome decades of negative perceptions of and opposition to the airport. The result was development of new approaches to the airport’s runways, and the extension of one of the main runways. He spends considerable time talking with airport operators, tenants, transient
pilots, student pilots and others. Handrahan always is seeking ways to improve airport safety through formal and informal initiatives. He is involved with the Florida aviation community, assisting in hurricane recovery, volunteering with the annual Sun ‘n’ Fun Fly-In in Lakeland and coordinating helicopter operations at the HomesteadMiami Speedway. Handrahan frequently makes presentations to classes at Miami Dade College and Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. Handrahan is a Certified Member of the American Association of Airport Executives, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and Experimental Aircraft Association. He received the award at the MiamiDade County Commission meeting on Mar. 15. The Southern Region is the FAA’s largest, encompassing eight southeastern states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Each school fielded a team of three attorneys with one alternate, and three witnesses with alternates. Scoring was conducted by panels consisting of judges and attorneys, arranged by Zascha Blanco Abbot of the Young Lawyers Section with Robert Brazofsky coordinating schools participation and program materials. “The students trained for several months and worked diligently to present their arguments for both prosecution and defense sides,” Panter said.

They waited until the end of the Court of Honor ceremony during which troop members were awarded with badges and new ranks. “I’d like to thank the boys who took Mr. Valle’s challenge to heart,” said Sam Amador, the troop’s committee chair. “We have 20 Eagle scouts in eight years.” With that, the crowd began chanting “shave the hair, shave the hair!” And amid much laughter, the shearing ceremony began. Jordan Panter, the attorney’s son and now a Duke University freshman, was a member of Killian’s 2009 team that his dad coached a year ago, an experience leading the elder Panter to volunteer for a second year. While Lourdes took the Miami-Dade finals to advance to a state competition, Silverstein said it was Panter’s enthusiasm that inspired the 2010 Killian team to its highest finish in several years, adding, “His enthusiasm and interest, two to three hours after school, week after week, really made a difference for us this year.” The real test, however, is not if a student follows a legal career, Silverstein said. “It’s their ability to stand on their feet, to think, and make a logical and clear statement. First to take the clippers and make the first pass was Michael Valle, the scoutmaster’s son. He also was the first of the group to make Eagle. The new Eagles included Michael Valle, twins Gabriel and Lucas Alcala, Marlon Velez, Derek McIntosh, Evan Burr, Stephen Gomez and Sean Vilar. Anthony Amador, an Eagle from an earlier year helped trim Valle’s hair. “I want these Eagles to know since they cut my hair, I have the right to cut their hair,” Mr. Valle shouted at one point. Naturally the boys denied his claim and the head shaving ceremony went on as parents and Scouts jostled each other for better picture angles. “It was pretty exciting,” Burr said, adding with a laugh, “They had it coming. It was fun to be able to shave their heads!”

In 2007-2008, we were overloaded with hearings to keep the UDB (Urban Development Boundary) intact. So, if any positive resulted in the subsequent down economic cycles of the past two years, it was the absence of new West Kendall development proposals on CDMP (Comprehensive Development Master Plan) agendas. Then, just last week, up popped a reminder that growth is never a dead issue in this neck of the woods. The Florida Hometown Democracy movement is itching for a fall vote to amend the state constitution on growth management. FHD is the measure spearheaded by Lesley Blackner, a Palm Beach attorney, allowing public referendums to overrule
unpopular growth decisions by county boards. We’ve heard mixed reactions from West Kendall folks about the measure. The ‘ayes’ want empowerment over a MiamiDade Commission that has raised the hackles of environmentalists on UDB matters in recent years. The ‘nays,’ strict constructionists, claim you’ll throw out representative government by favoring a precedentsetting public veto over elected board actions. We tend to favor the latter stand, even though it has gained some questionable looks by associates asking, “Who are YOU for, anyway?� More than 100 organizations are already signed to support a “Yes� vote on Amendment Four while several public officials and chamber types are railing against the measure. So, if you missed the growth issues, just wait campaigning before Just‘tilsopre-election you the statewide November polling. Amendment Four will give us plenty to talkJust (and so write) youabout! Everglades’ water is essential to South Florida’s existence R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY There is little scientific truth to the old saying “Man can live on bread and water alone.” But, try living without water. It cleanses our body; it cleans are clothes; it irrigates our farms. It is basic to our very existence. The source of Southeast Florida’s water is the Everglades. For years, the “River of Grass” has been under attack — first from the government which erroneously dug canals to drain it, to overzealous real estate developers building single-family home subdivisions, to farmers dumping fertilizers into the watershed, and to the community’s general neglect. Florida Gov. Charlie Christ, recognizing the need to purify the waters entering the Everglades, originally proposed and negotiated Florida’s largest land purchase for the acquisition of 181,000 acres of U.S. Sugar Corp’s farmland. The intent is to end sugarcane farming on the land, which
would result in greatly reducing the dumping of phosphorous fertilizers into the Everglades. The idea was conceived during the boom when money was available for any worthy, and sometimes unworthy, projects. The original cost of $1.34 billion has now been reduced to $536 million for the purchase of 72,000 acres of farm and grove land. Let’s step back for a moment and understand the logic behind the purchase. Water flows from the north, down through Lake Okeechobee, through the sugarcane farms into the Everglades. The fertilizers used by the farmers to grow the cane wash down with the flow of water where it contaminates the Everglades. Since the plans original conception, the scarcity of dollars in Tallahassee twice has caused a reduction in its original size and in cost. However, regardless of its downsizing, the concept is correct and the need for its implementation is ongoing. Objectors to the deal, from the very beginning, claim that it is a sweetheart deal for Gov. Crist and U.S. Sugar Corp. Sweetheart deal or not, the purchase is vital to the continued growth of our community and our ever-increasing demand for water. Florida Crystals Corp. and the

–– VIEWPOINT –– Miccosukee Tribe are urging the water management board to kill the deal by not extending the Mar. 31 deadline to complete the purchase. They claim that the agency’s own financial advisors and budget managers predict gushers of red ink and major cuts to existing projects — even without the $45 million in annual debt payments to finance the purchase. The tribe contends that the cost is so prohibitive that if the Water Management District proceeds with the purchase, it will be forced to eliminate or delay other planned Everglades’ restoration projects. Without exception, every environmental group in and outside of Florida endorses the purchase. The Everglades Coalition, made up of Florida’s largest environmental organizations, dismisses the claims that the purchase was designed to enrich U.S. Sugar and that the most critical lands are
not in the purchase. The tribe’s contention that the state doesn’t have the authority to proceed with the sale of bonds to finance the acquisition has been struck down by the courts. Now the only question remaining is will the spending of $536 million to buy the land possibly slow or eliminate other restoration projects. Inasmuch as we don’t have evidence that buying the U.S. Sugar land acquisition will end other projects, the state must continue with the purchase. Are smart phone ‘apps’ smart enough to trust?
Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY From paying bills via the Web, to online purchasing, there’s no denying a technological revolution is taking place that is changing the way we deal with our home finances. First it started with at home computers, then there was the laptop, and now even our cell phones are making it easy to manage our money. But with all of this mobile access to our personal finances the question is, “Are they also making it easier for us potentially to get ripped off?” Smart Phones, whether it’s a Palm, iPhone or Blackberry — or any other variation — are not just for quick phone calls anymore. They’re changing the way we live. Anything can be done on a smart phone, from simple things like emailing, online banking and watching local cable television shows, to more complicated functions such as planning and purchasing vacation packages and ordering a personalized vehicle through your phone. Who even chats on the phone anymore? Texting is the new age of communication. In recent years it has even invented its own code talk. (For example, “brb” means “be right back.”) There now are thousands of mini-programs called “apps” which are available to turn our smart phones into very personal digital assistants. There are apps available for anything you need, from finding a local restaurant, using GPS to track your location and give directions, to an app that lets you know what sales are going on in the stores nearest your home. Kendall resident Miriam Vazquez mentioned that she uses her smart phone to check her finances and keep up with her monthly expenses. “I pay my bills,” she explains. “I pay my Chase and Bank of America cards, because I have them locked. I don’t have to wait to get home or get to work to pay my bills. I can just do it easily wherever I’m at.” But are smart phones smart enough to trust with our family finances? Which raises another important question — if this information is so accessible, who else has access to it? There is an app for that too! If you’re looking for help in managing your money there are financial apps for just about anything, whether its balancing check books, paying bills, tracking investments, even helping get your taxes done. Bank account numbers, passwords, critical private data may conveniently all be in one place, but while they’re easy to use, they’re just as easy to lose. Once this information is stored into your phone, anyone with access to your device potentially could have access to all of this personal information. Luckily, many of these smart phones are equipped with a protection device setting, such as a keypad lock or password protection. It’s a code that you can set and activate under the settings of the phone. Anytime you place the phone down and it’s not in use for a specific allotted time, it goes into sleep mode. In order to re-activate the screen, that code must be punched into the keypad for usage. It’s a good idea to use this security function if you plan on doing any type of personal family financing through your phone. Certified Financial Planner Matt McGrath of Evensky and Katz in Coral Gables says, “The first thing to think of is to ask yourself what you’re doing with your personal information. Who are you divulging it to? Security is going to be the most critical factor to keep in mind, especially with smart phones with Wi-Fi networks. You don’t want to be at a local coffee shop doing your online banking using a Wi-Fi network.” That’s because most public Wi-Fi networks offer limited network security and cyber-thieves can steal your information. And that’s why Miami resident Gloria Suarez is sticking to her plain old, basic cell phone. “I do things the old fashioned way,” she explains. “I still pay my bills with checks. I do use a check cash card at the grocery store, but I’m not technologically advanced.” You also want to make sure you know the financial apps privacy policies. If you upload your financial or tax data, what happens to it and how do you make sure your financial data stays private? Also, be sure to keep backups of your financial programs and all your data just in case the phone breaks, is lost or stolen, or you forgot to charge your phone again. Miami is known for sizzle and spice, making it the perfect locale for South Florida’s first Panchero’s Mexican Grill. Owners Raj Patel and Rudy Puig are no strangers to the hot Miami dining scene but have been on the other end of the spectrum — icy-cold desserts — with four Cold Stone Creamery locations between them. There will be squids for kids at Deering Seafood Festival BY SHEILA STIEGLITZ
The Deering Seafood Festival on the Bay has become one of the community’s most anticipated annual events, not only for offering Florida’s freshest fish and seafood, but also because each year the Deering Estate at Cutler creates something unique that debuts at the event. The valet bike service initiated a few years ago continues to encourage festival goers to go green and cycle to the historic estate, and last year the introduction of the Marine Mobile on Wheels allows children a hands-on opportunity to learn about the local ecosystem, food chain, environment and habitat of the specimens. For this year’s festival on Sunday, Mar. 28, Deering Estate marine biologists braved the myths about the deep dark waters of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea fame, and are presenting the legendary sea creature — the squid. Found in waters all over the world, these cephalopods (animals with heads and feet) are not on the list of endangered species. Under the guidance of the educational and interpretative specialists at the Deering Estate at Cutler, boys and girls who are age 8 and older, have the opportunity to join the Squid Squad to dissect a squid and learn about all its different parts. Yoelly Burgos, staff member and trained marine biologist, explained that the squid produces ink that it cleverly uses for defense against predators. “Kids love this type of activity,” she said. “Through the dissection the kids will find the ink sac and then using a ‘pen’ — a part of the squid’s anatomy that acts like a back bone — they can write with the squid’s ink.” A few weeks ago, in preparation for the event, some of the Deering Estate Foundation board members courageously volunteered to try their hand at dissection.

locate the ink sac and the two hearts. “These activities provide just a mere glimpse in to the fun and interactive educa-
tional components that are part of the award winning programs that the estate delivers to students and campers everyday throughout the year,” said Mary Pettit, director of the Deering Estate Foundation. “We are delighted to showcase them at the Seafood Festival each year to raise public awareness. Not only is there the most delicious seafood, entertainment and much to see and do for the entire family at the festival, one also goes away having learned a little more about our South Florida environment, native habitats and biodiversity.” Dissection may not be for everyone, so there still is plenty to do at the upcoming Seafood festival. Top local restaurants, caterers and seafood markets prepare a dazzling array of the freshest catch. Steel drums, on-going musical entertainment, and costumed Bahamian Junkanoo dancers create a magical island celebration. Under the big top tent there are cooking demos with South Florida celebrity chefs: Clay Conley (Azul); Sean Bernal (Oceanaire); Damian Gilchrist (Ocean Reef Club), and Michael Bennett (Bimini Boatyard), and include food samples and wine tastings. Some of the other activities include an Artists’ Village, pontoon boat rides to Chicken Key; nature hikes and tours of the historic homes. St. Thomas Lutheran Church in Palmetto Bay will host its 15th annual Seder dinner to recognize the significance of the Jewish Passover tradition in Christianity. Church sewing club works to clothe children of Haiti BY GARY ALAN RUSE
Members of the Charity Circle of the United Methodist Women have found a way to take an enjoyable hobby, their talents and effort, and put them to good use to help the children of Haiti in the aftermath of the January earthquake. Working in the Social Hall of the Kendall United Methodist Church, 7600 SW 104 St., for many hours every Thursday, the women bring their sewing machines and fabric and skillfully craft bright, colorful clothing for little girls and boys who have little or none of their own to wear in the shattered cities of Haiti. So far they have made at least 200 dresses and 500 baby blankets, as well as shorts for boys. There are now 15 women working on the project, but it started with a group of five who knew each other through the Viking Sewing Machine Gallery inside JoAnn Fabrics at the Greenery Mall in Kendall. Palmetto Bay resident Hellen Ventimiglia, who manages the Gallery and is an avid seamstress herself, got the ball rolling. “I was making dresses for my granddaughters, and I thought, I think I know some kids in Haiti that could use some like that,” Ventimiglia said. “It’s tough to see them on TV in their dirty clothes, or without clothes, just in rags. We figured this will, at least, cheer them up.” Since they are acquainted with medical personnel from Jackson Memorial Hospital and the University of Miami, they believe they have the perfect conduit for the donated dresses and things. “We’re sending them over there with some doctors and nurses who are going there because that way we’re sure the clothes will get put on the kids who need them,” Ventimiglia said. “Most of the baby blankets will go to the hospitals there where they have babies being born whose

parents have no clothes for them at all.” In addition to the things they’ve made, they also have obtained more than 1,000 pairs of underwear, using donations from others and the help of their church. For the women of the group, it’s not work, it’s a labor of love. “Over the years I’ve worked a lot with Haitian co-workers, and they are incredibly beautiful people,” Amalia “Molly” Gonzalez said. “Having been through Hurricane Andrew, when I saw what they
went through in Haiti, which was 10 times worse, it really broke my heart. “I admire their people and I wanted to help, what little we could. This is something we could do. I have a friend whose niece is an orthopedic surgeon who went down there to work, and the stories she brought back were heartbreaking.” Yvonne Emmanuelli echoed that sentiment and the desire to contribute her time and effort. “I’ve been sewing with Viking Gallery
for a number of years — I have their machines — and when Hellen told us that we were going to help Haiti doing these dresses, I immediately volunteered, as well as my friends,” Emmanuelli explained. “This has been the best therapy that we can do, working with our friends and knowing that we’re doing something good for people that really need it.” Bernadine Smith, another veteran seamstress, also was attracted to the project because of the tremendous need and her ability to contribute. “When you see what’s going on down in Haiti you feel very helpless and you want to do something, and this is something that we can do,” Smith said. “And it’s an ongoing thing we can keep doing. It’s something I can give back. I’ve been sewing for a long time, over 60 years. I learned from my grandmother.” While they’ve been gathering up enough garments to send down to the kids, the women made an impressive display of their efforts by hanging the dresses everywhere in the church’s main chapel, and draping the baby blankets over the front panels before the pews. The effect was so striking that it prompted a rash of other donations from non-sewing members of the church. One woman in the group has inspired her friends by doing what she can to help, putting edgings on blankets or sewing ribbons on a dress, even though she is afflicted with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). Despite being unable to talk and remember certain things, she shows up every Thursday with a smile on her face, ready to help. And if they tune in one day soon and see some Haitian kids on TV who are wearing clothes they recognize as being ones they made? “It will make us feel it was all worthwhile,” Ventimiglia said.

Short Sale: What is it? Do I have that option? BY DANIA S. FERNANDEZ, ESQ. Attorney at Law
Many homeowners are in distress with their mortgages. Dealing with a foreclosure and/or negotiating a loan modification is a common situation throughout South Florida. A short sale may be a viable option for those who have had enough and want to simply move on.
Here is basic and useful information regarding short sales: 1. What is a short sale? A short sale is an alternative to foreclosure where the lender/bank agrees to accept a sale price on your property that is less than what is owe on the loan. If you want to sell your home and you have no equity and owe more than it is worth, it will need to be through a short sale process. 2. When should I consider a short sale? This depends on your particular situation. If you wish you could just walk away from your house, then a short sale is appropriate. If what you need is more time, whether to find a better job or save money, then wait and do not sell your house yet. Many homeowners unable to pay their mortgage believe that they need to leave their home immediately. Keep in mind that once you leave your home you will either be living with someone else or you will have to rent. Do not forget that to rent you will probably have to pay first and last months’ rent plus a security deposit. A better plan is often to stay in your home and try to work out a loan modification as you simultaneously defend your foreclosure. Only you can decide if you want to fight for the home you have worked so hard for. 3. Where do I find buyers for a short sale? A common problem with short sales is finding a buyer. You need a Realtor who is knowledgeable about short sales and can market your home
to quickly find a buyer. Most attorneys work with a Realtor who is well-versed in the short sale process. Contact your attorney and get a referral for a Realtor. It will make a huge difference. 4. Do I need an attorney? An attorney will negotiate the short sale transaction. A short sale is processed much like a loan modification. The attorney will prepare all documentation and negotiate a deal with the lender/bank. In addition, you need to make certain the lender/bank waives its right to a deficiency judgment against you. A deficiency judgment is when the lender/bank pursues its right to come after you for the difference of what they agreed to allow the home to be sold for and what you owed to them. 5. What will I have to pay? The Realtor’s commissions are paid at closing by the lender/bank. An attorney may have an initial processing fee and may negotiate their fees with the lender/bank. In every short sale, time is a major factor; therefore it is best that the process be handled by an experienced professional. If a short sale is not processed correctly it could take longer to get an approval and eventually you may lose the potential buyer. There is a timeline for every alternative and every homeowner should be clear as to what step to take first. Whether it is a loan modification, foreclosure defense, short sale, deed in lieu of foreclosure or bankruptcy, each alternative is going to be specific to your individual case. Don’t be a homeowner who abandons their home prematurely! There are many viable alternatives. My initial consultation is free and many attorneys do the same. Dumb is better? That is what net neutrality advocates would have us believe. Their basic belief is that broadband networks should be pipes that indifferently pass information packets from one location to another, allowing content providers and customers equal opportunity to do whatever they want. Who could be against that? People interested in innovation and customer welfare. Remember Al Gore calling the Internet the Information Super Highway? The metaphor wasn’t and isn’t perfect, but it is instructive. Suppose we applied net neutrality to our transportation system – there would be no high occupancy vehicle lanes during rush hour, no car only lanes on interstates, and no toll road as an alternative to I-95 in South Florida. Transportation would be more costly and provide less value. Forcing net neutrality would have similar results. Time sensitive information, such as stock market transactions, would wait in line behind football game highlights. Financial dealings that would benefit from extra security would be given no better treatment than a Twitter from Taylor Swift’s E! interview. If you are thinking that it sounds like net neutrality restricts innovation and hurts customers, you’re right. Our research has shown that net neutrality limits innovation, contrary to the claims of the net neutrality proponents. How can this be? Imagine a one dimensional network – one that does noth-
ing but carry information from point to point, which is how the old Internet has worked. What kinds of content providers flourish in that context? Those big enough to distribute their software across the net and those whose software takes advantage of the great bandwidth that they don’t have to pay for. Now suppose that the network can offer enhancements that improve customers’ experiences. Content providers whose sites would not benefit from such enhancements could ignore the offering. But there will be some content providers who could improve their services by buying the enhancements, such as priority packet delivery. These sites become better without net neutrality and offer customers more service. In other words, there is more innovation and greater customer welfare without net neutrality than with it. Today’s successful Internet sites face great competition if we move beyond net neutrality principles. That probably explains why they are net neutrality’s strongest advocates. But moving beyond a dumb network is better for customers, sites that find new opportunities and networks. It should be no surprise that dumb isn’t better. In an innovation driven economy, restrictions don’t make us better. They hold us back. * The authors are Dr. Mark A. Transit officials hit streets to promote commuter savings For the next six to eight weeks, officials with Miami-Dade Transit (MDT) and South Florida Commuter Services will be visiting local businesses to provide information on transit programs and services that could reduce employees’ commuting costs by more than $100 a month. The transit teams will visit businesses in the downtown Miami, Brickell and Civic Center areas, where they will present information on MDT’s Corporate Discount Program and on the new I-95 DadeBroward Express commuter bus route. Information also will be provided on the Emergency Ride Home Program, which provides commuters in Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Martin and St. Lucie counties that carpool, vanpool, ride transit, bike or walk three or more days a week, with six free taxi cab vouchers a year to use in the event of an unexpected emergency or unscheduled overtime. A screening to identify children who may be candidates for surgery will take place on Saturday, May 22, at Baptist Children’s Hospital, 8900 N. Kendall Dr. The surgeries will take place on Saturday, June 12. Types of facial deformities that an be corrected include cleft palates, cleft lips, scars, tumors, burns, port wine birthmarks and congenital hand deformities. To be eligible, patients must meet certain surgical and financial criteria. Patients must be 18 years old or younger and residents of Miami-Dade or Monroe counties. They also must present documentation substantiating their parents’ or guardian’s previous 12-month gross income.

Miami Seaquarium will host its annual Easter Egg Hunt Celebration on Easter Weekend, Friday, Apr. 2, through Sunday, Apr 4. The annual event is South Florida’s favorite Easter Egg Hunt Celebration and features continuous Easter Egg Hunts between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. as well as a smaller “Lil’ Hoppers Zone” for toddlers. Miami Dade College to present a unique musical performance BY SUE ARROWSMITH
The Arts and Philosophy Department at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Wolfson Campus will present an oddball ensemble — tenor saxophone, marimba (and wood block), electric guitar, and piano — on Sunday, Mar. 28. The concert, titled “Obsession!,” will include a performance of Louis Andriessen’s mind-bending piece Hout (Wood), among other compositions, starting at 3 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Miami, 400 Biscayne Blvd. Written in 1991, this entertaining work is a fast canon with entrances at the 16th note, each musician chasing the leader in riffs that sound like Bach gone mad. Dutch composer Andriessen is the Netherland’s most important living composer. His music often is didactic, and a common theme is perseverance. Hout is one of the most challenging works for the guitar, marimba, and saxophone. “Obsession!” moves from meditative to caffeinated, and features fresh sounds in
modern modes. Other pieces include Steve Reich’s Clapping Music; music of birds: Olivier Messiaen’s Le Merle Noir, and Somei Satoh’s Birds in Warped Time II, and Arvo Pärt’s hypnotic Spiegel im Spiegel. The concert will begin with Pastorale, music composed by Louis Andriessen’s father, Hendrik Andriessen. All of this music was written between 1941 and 1991. Featured musicians include flutist Ebonee Thomas, violinist Megan McClendan, saxophonist Matt Vashlishan, guitarist Aaron Lebos, percussionist Sergio Carreno, and pianist Alan Ngim. These versatile musicians also can be heard performing with the New World Symphony, Miami Children’s Chorus and The Delray Quartet, as well as at Churchill’s Pub, the Arsht Center and internationally. Members of the ensemble also teach at MDC, New World School of the Arts and the University of Miami. This performance is free to the public. FIU to hold arts, culture lovers auction fundraiser BY JESSICA RODRIGUEZ
Florida International University’s College of Architecture + The Arts presents the first annual Arts, Design and Culture Awards and Benefit on Mar. 25, 6 p.m., in the Westin Colonnade in Coral Gables. An auction will take place that includes incredible travel packages planned especially for art and culture enthusiasts to popular locations around the world. Guest will enjoy cocktails, a sit-down dinner, a performance by the FIU Amernet String Quartet, and a live auction that benefits student scholarships and academic programs at FIU. Following the auction, an award ceremony will be held to honor long-time FIU supporter Ambassador Paul L. Cejas for his generous commitment and contributions to the College of Architecture + The Arts. Amb. Cejas served as U.S. Ambassador to Belgium from 1998 to 2001. Upon his return to the U.S., he resumed responsibilities as chair and CEO of PLC Investments Inc., a wholly owned company that manages family investments in real estate, equities and venture capital projects. He has been a business and civic leader in the South Florida community for more than 30 years. Cejas has maintained an extensive involvement in the area of community and public service. The FIU School of Architecture Building is named in his honor. The auction will include travel packages like an “Art Lovers Tour to Europe” with round-trip airfare for two, hotel-stays, deluxe high-speed train-ride, an intimate tour of the Louvre, a cruise down the Seine River, and an architectural boat tour through Amsterdam’s canals. The “Adventure in Argentina” package includes round-trip airfare for two, hotelstay in Iguazu Falls, a visit to the famous Now Serving
Evita Balcony, and a stage performance in the newly renovated Teatro Colon Opera House. Also being auctioned off is a “Dancing with the Stars” package that includes round-trip airfare for two to New York City, a hotel-stay at the Millennium Broadway, a limousine ride, private dance lessons with hit-series Dancing With the Stars professional dancer Maksim Chmerkovskiy, a Broadway show, Water Club access, Tribeca Grill dinner for two, and a special architectural tour around Manhattan. LET’S TALK CARS The Audi TT made its debut as a concept car in 1995 and consumer reaction was so strong that Audi brought to market as a hatchback coupe for the 2000 model year. It has been a barnstorming success from the start. For 2010, you can get the TT in both Coupe and Roadster models. Named after the Tourist Trophy auto race on the Isle of Man, the Audi TT is not quite a sports car and not quite a sport coupe or roadster; it’s more of a two-seat GT. The Coupe does have two rear seats, but they’re not much good for carrying people unless they’re small children. The TT was redesigned for the 2008 model year and represents the second generation of the sporty little vehicle. Although slightly larger, this second generation doesn’t stray far from the classic lines of its predecessor. The general look is the same, although character lines are crisper and the
nose has Audi’s now signature single-frame grille. Although longer and wider than the first TT, this latest version is lighter by almost 200 pounds in the case of the roadster, thanks to increased use of aluminum in the body structure. It also has a more powerful four-cylinder engine. Two trim levels — a 2.0T (200 hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine with frontwheel drive) and a 3.2 Quattro (250 hp V-6 with all-wheel drive) — are offered in a choice of hatchback coupe and roadster body styles. Transmission choices include a six-speed manual and a six-speed S-tronic twin-clutch sequential transmission that offers the ease of an automatic combined with the quick response of a manual. On the road, the 2.0T is more agile through the curves because it has less weight on the front tires, while the 3.2 Quattro has more power on straightaway and a more aggressive engine and exhaust sound. The TT has the low-slung look and feel of a sports car, but the personality is closer to a luxury sport coupe. From the side, there’s a look of poise and speed, with large fender arches housing stylish wheel options. The Coupe has a long, arching
