Roads, parks due for improvements BY RICHARD YAGER est Kendall roads and parks are due for new improvements during the next two years. That was the capsule report of two key MiamiDade County administrators speaking to Community Council 11 during a nonzoning meeting on Apr. 15. More details will be forthcoming, reported Raul A. Pino, chief of the Public Works Department Land Development Division, who said $140,000 has been earmarked for new sidewalks on SW 127th Avenue, SW 136th Street and SW 152nd Avenue, all part of a package of created in part by new federal subsidy programming. Other projects include $1.4 million for improving transit bus stops at various locations and $348,000 to upgrade drainage at four locations (SW 132nd and SW 152nd Avenues, SW 86th and 78th Streets). New DPW projects all will get underway between 2009 and 2011, he said. Continuing traffic snarls on Kendall Drive during six-lane reconstruction work will continue because the Kendall Commons developer at SW 162nd Avenue has delayed a project start, due to the poor economy, Pino noted. Development impact fees are needed to rebuild SW 88th Street in that area, he said. Eric Hansen of Miami-Dade Parks Planning and Research Division, followed a 30-minute “Open Space” presentation with an answer for one key question, sought by council member Ileana Vazquez: When will West Kendall’s new skateboard park open? Groundbreaking for West Wind Lakes project should begin soon with a target

Lawn watering restrictions now permanent BY NUSLY BARAHONA-ALEA he Miami-Dade County Commission on Apr. 7 passed an ordinance making the current landscape irrigation restriction permanent in the county. The policy continues the landscape irrigation restrictions imposed by the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) in April 2007. “We have had these restrictions in place for the past two years and the citizens of Miami-Dade County know the rules,” said District 13 Commissioner Natacha Seijas, sponsor of the ordinance. “Making the restrictions permanent

almart Stores has submitted initial plans for a new “Super Center” in West Kendall, expanding its existing store by 60,000 square feet and enlarging the outdoor garden area. New zoning approvals required to initiate the project would modify restrictions adopted in 1990 when zoning of the 14.01-acre site was changed from GU (Interim District) to BU-1A (Limited Business) to build the existing 117,000-square-foot outlet at 15885 SW 88 St.

Walmart now seeks to change those zoning conditions to redevelop the existing store into a 177,126-squarefoot building including a 12,488square-foot garden area. A public hearing on expansion was deferred from Apr. 2 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 12, at the Kendall Village Center Civic Pavilion, 8625 SW 124 Ave. It is a change of location from Arvida Middle School where West Kendall’s Community Council 12 usually reviews applications as a

7,000 enjoy sun, fun, food at Deering Seafood Festival BY SHEILA STIEGLITZ Festival guests arrived at the historic Deering Estate on bikes, free shuttles and golf carts, some with blankets and chairs, and all eagerly awaiting the opening of the majestic gates. The 7,000 attendees on Mar. 29 hailed from the Florida Keys to Canada, ready to settle in for a glorious, fun-filled day at the fifth annual Deering Seafood Festival. Musicians on steel drums and costumed 14-foot stilt walkers set the mood as festival attendees descended upon the “biggest backyard on Biscayne Bay.” The colorful Bahamian Junkanoo danced their way through the crowd and played on horns, drums and tambourines. When their music stopped, the rhythmic sounds of Bay Roots Reggae Band and the Drums of Polynesia could be heard. Closing out the event was Mr. Nice Guy Band, back by popular demand. “Once again, we were blessed with beautiful weather and our guests were able to explore and enjoy our magnificent ‘Backyard on the Bay’ at their leisure, with all of the fan-fare the
Seafood Festival offers,” said Mary Pettit, festival executive director. “My hat’s off to the festival committee and over 200 volunteers who enthusiastically make this event possible each year, and to our community partners and sponsors. It is with their dedicated support and through their partnerships that the foundation is able to annually host the Seafood Festival,” Pettit said. “The foundation’s mission is two-fold: to raise public awareness of the Deering Estate at Cutler and the many programs it offers throughout the year, and to raise funds to protect, preserve and enhance the estate. We successfully achieved both of our goals, raising over $50,000 in net proceeds while introducing the Deering Estate to over 2,000 first-time visitors.” Under the big top tent, it was standing room only for all five of the celebrity chef demonstrations. A five-star lineup of local fish markets, restaurants and caterers included: Golden Rule Seafood Market, Bizcaya Ritz-Carlton, Imlee Indian Bistro, Fleming, Shibui, Rodbenders, Sports Grill, Harvey’s Smokehouse BBQ, Black

Point Ocean Grill, Gustos, Paella’s R Us and the Les Seafood Express. Each helped to create a seafood lovers feast by offering everything from fried conch and lobster sliders to gator bites, frog legs and mountains of shrimp that were steamed, fried, or ready to peel and eat. After a well-deserved rest, the festival committee will begin to plan next year’s event. “Mark your calendars for Sunday, Mar. 28, 2010 for the sixth annual Deering Seafood Festival,” Pettit said. “As one of South Florida’s premier family-friendly events, we are looking forward to another great year in 2010!” The Deering Estate at Cutler, a MiamiDade County Park, is located at 16701 SW 72 Ave. This 444-acre natural and archaeological preserve and historic site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and serves as a center for education, culture and recreation. However, groundbreaking for the new 164-acre District Park planned for West Kendall has been “temporarily held up” by negotiations involving a needed canal bridge and a southward extension of SW 157th Avenue to SW 120th Street, Hansen advised. “A Dog Park of four to five acres with a shelter and watering facility is the first project planned in the northeast corner
of the park area,” he said, noting the needed bridge at the current dead-end of SW 157th Avenue in The Hammocks will provide access. With only three members attending, no official actions were taken at the session chaired by Vice Chair Jeff Wander with Vazquez and Joseph E. Delaney present. The next non-zoning session for details on public works and parks projects is scheduled on June 10.

local zoning board. Through Apr. 14, petitions with 214 names had been submitted objecting to the initial plans, according to an MiamiDade Planning and Zoning spokesperson who said most signatures carried home addresses directly north and west of the existing store. According to a Planning and Zoning Department review, approving revised conditions of current zoning will next allow Walmart to submit a detailed site plan, showing any additions to the existing retail building and expansion of the outdoor sales area. A new access driveway off Kendall Drive also is planned. Initial review by the county planners found no objections to two of three changes but recommended denial without prejudice of a variance that would require Walmart to prove its request is due to an unnecessary hardship. Six county departments reviewing the application recorded “No Objection,” including Parks and Recreation, MiamiDade Transit, Fire-Rescue and Police. Public Works said the application did not meet traffic concurrency criteria for an initial development order but generation of an additional 226 daily peak
hour vehicle trips to the area would not exceed acceptable levels of service on area roadways. DPW stipulated FDOT access requirements must be met for a new driveway to SW 88th Street. A review by the Department of Environmental Resources Management (DERM) cautioned that any final development order must meet applicable standards for water and sewer expansion, if required. The school district did not comment on the project. The planning submitted with the application would enlarge the existing premises by demolishing 717 square feet of the current structure and redeveloping a building of 164,638 square feet with an enlarged outdoor Garden Center of 12,488 square feet, an overall increase to 177,126 square feet. Modifications of the original plan were prepared by Kimley-Horn & Associates Inc. and Pb2 Architecture & Engineering, submitted in late 2008 for processing subsequently re-dated Jan. 31, 2009. According to Walmart, 2,622 nationwide Super Centers have been developed for one-stop shopping of grocery and general merchandise under a single roof, averaging 187,000 square feet and employing 350 or more.

Letter to the Editor No Community Redevelopment money being spent on stadium To the Editor: Please tell R. Kenneth Bluh and Community Newspapers’ readers that no Community Redevelopment money is being spent on the Miami Marlins Stadium. None. Not one penny. The ballpark will be paid with a combination of tourist tax dollars, General Obligation Bonds (previously earmarked to renovate the now non-existent Orange Bowl), and $155 million from the team. Miami-Dade County will own the stadium and the land underneath it. The Marlins will pay rent — $2.3 million a year increasing by 2 percent every year for the next 35 years. The ballpark is only one investment in our community. Money is set aside to improve the Miami Beach Convention Center. We’re aggressively investing in the arts and cultural facilities. Our parks, including Metrozoo, have never looked better. We’re also supporting the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau and its international marketing campaign, “Where Worlds Meet” as well as its local marketing campaign, “Miami Begins with Me.” At least three events in the near future — Super Bowl; Pro Bowl, and Pow-Wow, the tourist industry’s premier gathering — will help cushion the impact of the economic downturn. We know our most important industry is tourism. That’s why we continue to invest in all the things that make a community world class. V icki Mallette Communications Director Miami-Dade County

Check your paychecks: There’s new tax savings
Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY It is all part of the latest economic stimulus plans to get people spending again. You don’t have to do anything special if you qualify. But you better start paying more attention to your paychecks to make sure you don’t get hit with a bigger tax bill next year. Financial Planner Matt McGrath says, “The ideas behind this is to give consumers a little bit of extra money.” Extra money in your paychecks means you can start spending a little more each month. On Apr. 1, Federal Income Tax withholding rates were lowered. Companies began withdrawing fewer taxes from your paycheck. Qualifying workers will see about an extra $65 a month. During tax season 2010, you’ll notice an extra tax credit of about $400, up to about $800 for two-income families filing joint returns. As usual, there are some limitations: You cannot earn more than $95,000 as a single wage earner or have a combined family income of more than $190,000. The White House believes more than
7 million Florida families will qualify, adding an extra $3.5 billion into our local economy. “The extra money is intentionally being distributed over the long run to avoid giving financially strapped consumers too much money at once,” McGrath adds. If you don’t start seeing any extra money in your next few paychecks, contact your company’s payroll department. You also should contact your tax advisor to see how many extra takehome pay will affect your tax bill next year. Even though you may qualify for the new tax credits and the extra take-home pay, you may still want to go back to your old withholding rate so you won’t owe Uncle Sam too much money next year. If you work two jobs, then check your combined withholding. Make sure each employer doesn’t give you too much extra money at the end of the month because you may owe more on your taxes than you can afford. Here’s more information from the IRS if you’re really in need of more details: <www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=204521,00.htm> and <www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/n1036.pdf>.

School chorus to stage production of Go West
MEDICAL ONCOLOGY Personalized Care in Medical Oncology Chemotherapy, if necessary, may be given in my clinic, the new Homestead Hospital Outpatient Center or Regional Cancer Programs without leaving the area.
BOARD CERTIFIED Students at Bowman Foster Ashe Elementary will present a performance of Go West, highlighting the country’s westward expansion in the 1800s. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
BY ROBERT HAMILTON Students in the Bowman Foster Ashe Elementary School Chorus will stage performances of Go West on Wednesday, May 6, 9 a.m. and 7 p.m., at the school, 6601 SW 152 Ave. Admission is free, but any donations for the school will be accepted. As part of an ongoing initiative to link the school’s music program to the larger ideas and issues of the country, the Spectacular Stars will feature this production. This new play enables the students to discover an untold world of America’s Westward Expansion, the Homestead Act and modes of transportation to the West. Through this musical journey, some students will be reinforcing what they are learning in their history and social studies classes. For others it will be the first time
they learn about America’s Westward Expansion. The musical message is that the riches of the West were found not only in gold but in wide-open spaces, waving fields of grain, owning your own land and fresh starts on life. The play is set in the 1800s. Gold has been discovered in the hills of California and land is given away to settlers willing to make a fresh start in the newly explored regions of the American West. Cowpokes and miners, farmers and trappers, gamblers and adventurers of all kinds are making their way west to chase the promise of the American Dream. For additional information about the performances, contact Victor de Diego at 305-386-6667 or by email at <vdediego@dadeschools.net>.

Multi-event tournament raises money for JCC scholarships
These women enjoy a game of Mah Jongg during a past Alper JCC’s Grand Tournament. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
BY SHEILA STIEGLITZ Seventeen years ago the idea of the Alper JCC conducting a multi-event tournament to raise funds was a somewhat novel idea. Since that time, sports tournaments have become a popular and profitable means to a fundraising end, but according to golf course personnel and event caterers, the current economy has forced many scheduled tournaments to be cancelled. Now in its 17th year, the JCC Grand Tournament is thriving due to the generosity of numerous caring sponsors, business owners and participants who support the event as a way to give back to the community. “I think that the reason that the Alper JCC has such strong sponsor support and player backing is that moneys raised by the Grand Tournament directly provide scholarships for children and senior citizens,” said Mindy Finkelman, event coordinator. “We haven’t seen this much community spirit since Hurricane Andrew with people coming out to help one another.” Each year, the Alper JCC has provided more than $200,000 in scholarships to supplement individual and family needs. Many people with limited financial resources depend upon these scholarships to help them participate in JCC programs such as preschool, after school care, summer camp, special needs and senior adult activities. This direct link to how the proceeds are spent is one reason Jackson South Community Hospital again has agreed to
be the title sponsor. This year other named sponsors are Humana for Mah Jongg compeition and CarePlus for tennis. The event began at the Alper JCC on Sunday, Apr. 19, with men’s tennis, to be followed by women’s tennis and Mah Jongg on Monday, Apr. 27. The Golf Tournament takes place on Thursday, May 7, at the beautiful Crandon Golf Club at Key Biscayne, a course known for its breathtaking views of the bay. There are putting contests, and select holes where players participate in poker golf games, and contests for the longest-drive, and closest-to-pin. Any golfer who shoots a hole-in-one gets a 36month lease on a Cadillac CTS provided by Williamson Cadillac Hummer. With multi-tournament events there is something for every interest, and friendly competition for all, it’s no wonder why the community comes out to support the JCC Grand Tournament. Throughout each season, the symphony brings stunning guest artists to Miami, showcasing virtuoso talent drawn from all corners of the globe. The Miami Symphony Orchestra also takes its music beyond its principal concert halls, performing at Art Basel and venues such as Carnegie Hall. The dancers of Karen Peterson and Dancers have been staging an annual spring performance for the past 19 years, but what sets them apart from others in the community is that many of them perform in wheelchairs; they’re disabled. Among the disabilities these dancers have effectively subdued, at least for the sake of dancing, are autism, cerebral palsy, learning disabilities and being confined to a wheelchair. In the past, this show was performed at the New World School of the Arts theater in downtown Miami and, at one point, Florida Pictured are Jennifer Smallwood and John Beauregard performing a scene I n t e r n a t i o n a l from Mano a Mano. Author to mark 25 years of The House on Mango Street BY JEN MARSHALL This year marks the 25th anniversary of the publication of Sandra Cisneros’ now-classic novel of childhood and selfdiscovery, The House on Mango Street. The House on Mango Street gave permission to a whole new generation of Latina and other women writers to write honestly about their lives and it remains one of the most important books written by an American woman to date. Cisneros is the recipient of numerous awards for her writing, including a Lannan Literary Award and an American Book Award as well as fellowships from the N a t i o n a l Endowment of the Arts and the M a c A r t h u r Foundation. Starting a new company may be a daunting task for some, but not for the brother and sister team of Dr. Joseph K. Duran and Yvette Duran Someillan. They combined their vast knowledge and experience in the field of Audiology and hearing aids and embarked on a new business venture. Before receiving a doctorate degree in Audiology at the University of South Florida, Joseph Duran started his work with hearing loss and hearing aids at a very young age at Caribe Hearing Aids in Miami. While studying at Miami Dade College he worked as a Hearing Instrument Specialist and realized his passion for the field. He felt the need to continue his studies and found that Audiology, encompassing hearing and balance disorders, brought him the satisfaction he was looking for. It afforded him the opportunity to not only help patients with hearing loss, but also those suffering from dizziness, vertigo, and imbalance. Joseph had the opportunity to sharpen his skills as an audiologist at the University of Miami Ear Institute. His sister Yvette, who also started working at Caribe Hearing Aids at a young age, “did not think I would spend most of my life in this industry.” But while studying Accounting at Florida International University (FIU) she also studied for and received a license to sell and dispense hearing aids. After graduating from FIU she decided to continue working at Caribe and applied her accounting knowledge to the administrative side of the business. Naturally, when the Duran’s decided to open their own business, New Generation Hearing Centers, in January of this year, they divided the responsibilities. Yvette is in charge of operations, while Joseph attends to their patients. Both married with children, they believe that owning their own business allows them to continue their careers while, at the same time affording them time to spend with their families. Together, the team has accumulated 30 years of experience in both Audiology and the Hearing Aid industry, making them well prepared when they opened the doors of their new office at 3431 SW 107th Avenue in Miami, Florida in January 2009. Choosing a place to start was not a problem. Joseph and Yvette both grew up in this area of Miami. They both went to Rockway Elementary, and while Yvette continued her education at St. Brendan High School, Joseph attended Belen Jesuit Preparatory School. Born of Cuban parents, Dr. Duran and his sister Yvette are fluent in Spanish and English. “This is our home, we know the people and we understand their needs”, commented Joseph Duran, 32, Co-President and Director of Audiology of New Generation Hearing Centers. Although Dr. Duran does not specialize in children under the age of ten, he has patients up to the age of 106. Recently, he had to look for solutions for a
patient who suddenly (within seconds) lost his hearing in one ear because of a displaced shot while cleaning a firearm. Another patient lost hearing in one ear while scuba diving. “Luckily he came to see me right away, so I was able to have him begin treatment with an Otolaryngologist getting him on the road to recovery,” stated Dr. Duran. Based on their years of involvement with the sale of hearing instruments, the Duran’s have been able to keep their finger on the pulse of any and all new technological advancements in their field. They are able to empathize with their patients and understand how hearing loss, when untreated, can lead to other health related problems such as stress, fatigue, decreased self-confidence, and in extreme cases, depression.
The transition from analog to digital technology in the last 10 years has completely changed the menu for hearing aids. “Now our patients have more options,” affirmed Yvette Duran Someillan, 38, CoPresident and Director of Operations of New Generation Hearing Centers. Since the appearance of digital hearing aids, open fittings, and Bluetooth compatibility (technology that allows for cordless communication between hearing aids and cell phone or other electronic devices), many people with hearing difficulties feel more comfortable wearing them. Digital hearing aids, in comparison with analog systems, are extremely flexible in terms of programming. Since they come equipped with computer chips, environmental sounds can be adjusted automatically. Wearing a hearing aid is no longer cumbersome or a nuisance, hearing aids are now discreet and can be fit to suit any lifestyle. “That has allowed me to offer made-to-order hearing aids to my patients,” explained Dr. Duran. For example, one of his patients is a teacher and reported difficulty hearing the students sitting in the last row of his class. Dr. Duran programmed his hearing aids to allow this patient to hear those students by simply pressing a button. When not in class, the patient only has to touch the same button again for the hearing aid to function properly in other situations. New Generation Hearing Centers offers a wide range of hearing aid types and styles with prices starting at $500. Most of the hearing aid cost is generally paid for by the patient since most insurance plans will only cover a portion of the total price. More advanced models begin at $1,300. A majority of the hearing aids available have been designed by large manufacturers, one of them being well-known, Swiss-made Phonak Hearing Instruments. It is because of the many years in the field of audiology that both Dr. Duran and his sister felt secure in their ability to achieve success with this business venture, even in this unstable economy. The Durans said…“We believe we are giving a much needed service in an area we know and love”.

VW GTI: A hatchback that’s sporty, affordable Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS The 2009 Volkswagen GTI is a hatchback that offers good looks and sporty performance at an affordable price. With a starting price of $22,990, the newest GTI has all the refinement and technology usually found on vehicles that cost much more. The GTI is offered in either two- or four-door form. It’s nicely styled, with a large, black honeycomb grille that has a defining red strip outlining the radiator. The GTI badge is positioned at the front of the car on the passenger’s side. The honeycomb design of the grille is carried to the lower front fascia with halogen fog lights. Higher up at the intersection of the hood and fender, the headlight housings incorporate high-intensity gas-discharge Xenon headlights. Distinctive
bumpers, widened black sill panels and darkened headlight housings highlight the exterior. Larger 18-inch alloy wheels and a sunroof are available options. The heart of the GTI’s performance comes from its 2.0-liter FSI turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a 200 hp 16-valve DOHC gasoline powerplant, with a high compression ratio and maintenance-free hydraulic lifters for smooth operation. The advanced and compact “pocket rocket” engine incorporates a fully electronic management system and includes drive-by-wire throttle control and FSI direct injection for optimal fuel delivery, all serving to increase power and improve efficiency, while reducing emissions. When combined with a standard sixspeed manual transmission, the GTI clocks 0-60 mph in 7.2 seconds and has an electronically governed top speed of 130 mph. With the six-speed manual transmission, the GTI delivers an EPAestimated 31 mpg on the highway and 21 mpg in the city. With the optional automatic DSG transmission, the GTI clocks 0-60 mph in 6.9 seconds and gets 22/29 mpg.
Volkswagen GTI has large, black honeycomb grille design that carries over to the lower front fascia.
The dual-clutch DSG transmission is one of the GTI’s technical highlights. It utilizes direct shifting that automatically engages and disengages gears without the need for a clutch pedal. A computer engages one clutch on the next gear that’s needed, just as it releases the other clutch from the previous gear. The shifts are seamless and happen without the power loss associated with a traditional clutched shift. Launch Control, combined with the DSG transmission, helps get the GTI off the line a little faster. The Launch Control program allows the engine to rev before the first clutch is engaged.
The DSG with Volkswagen Tiptronic lets drivers shift gears up and down with a tap of the gearshift selector or fingeroperated shiftpaddles on the steering wheel.
