he recent announcement that Loehmann’s will open a new retail store at The Palms continues a succession of new major tenants occupying the redevelopment project of Flagler Development Group on the east side of Town and Country Center in Kendall. Side-by-side with a Nordstrom Rack outlet, the two stores are completing exterior construction at 8268 Mills Rd., adjoining a new traffic circle northeast of the Kendall Drive entry road to the center. Loehmann’s has leased 25,699 square feet of space in the nearly 400,000-squarefoot open air development that adjoins an existing lake and former mall area, now anchored by Kohl’s Department Store. An associate at the existing Kendall’s Loehmann’s at B J’s Plaza shopping center 7135 SW 117 Ave., said they were unaware if any decision had been made to maintain or close that store when The Palms store opens.

BY SANDRA G. KRAMER The Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) has announced that Detectives Jose Suarez, Michael Castaneda and Fredy Rojas have been awarded the departmental Exceptional Service Award and selected to share Distinguished Officer of the Month honors for April. Det. Suarez has been a member of the department since 2000; Det. Castaneda since 1989, and Det. Rojas since 1995. They currently are assigned to the Hammocks District’s South Regional Agricultural Patrol Section (APS). On Oct. 26, 2008, at 12:46 a.m., Det. Suarez was on patrol when he drove into the Tom Thumb gas station located at 18400 SW 177 Ave. As he entered the parking lot, he observed a female standing next to a van that was parked on the south side of the gas station. She appeared to be in distress and made several hand gestures toward Det. Suarez indicating that someone had a gun inside the store. She also put her hands in a praying position as if to say, “Please help me! Detective Suarez requested backup and Det. Castaneda arrived within minutes and parked on the north side of the store. He observed the female pointing at a man who had just exited the store and was walking toward her. The subject grabbed the woman’s arm and forcibly walked her to the passenger door and made her get into the van. When the subject walked back to the
store, Det. Suarez stopped him and conducted a pat down for officer safety. While Det. Suarez interviewed the subject, Det. Castaneda approached the van to check on the female’s welfare. She advised that she was being held against her will and the subject had a gun inside the van. When Det. Suarez asked the subject to produce identification, he defied the orders to stop and headed toward the van. Detectives Castaneda and Rojas, who also had responded, quickly intervened and placed the subject in custody. A check of the vehicle revealed a loaded shotgun by the driver’s door. During the investigation, it was revealed that the subject and the female victim had been involved in a relationship, and the victim had broken up with him two weeks earlier. Unhappy with the breakup, he armed himself with a shotgun on the night of Oct. 26, 2008, and kidnapped the victim and her baby, holding them at his residence. The victim advised that the subject beat her and forced her to leave her baby at the home while they went to the gas station. Detectives Suarez and Rojas immediately went to the residence and located the child, who was unharmed. The subject was charged with armed kidnapping and felony battery. In arresting a violent subject without incident, the detectives implemented their training and used teamwork to avert a potentially deadly situation for the victims of a forcible felony.

Capablanca, president/CEO of Union Credit Bank, while waving a common yellow student pencil to illustrate “the more than 16 countries needed to manufacture this simple tool of your dayto-day education.” As inspiration for developing his financial career, Capablanca cited Helen Keller, blind and deaf author who helped pioneer the Braille system, and Juan Trippe, father of Pan American Airways “with a global view ahead of his time, both of whose actions encouraged me to believe the impossible can be done.” Scholarship awards of $1,000 were presented by Tenecia Bradley, dean of students at Miami Dade College’s Kendall campus, in addition to $500 awards from KFHA funds, supported by contributions from Miami-Dade Commissioners Dennis Moss, Katy Sorenson and Javier Souto as well as Miami-Dade School Board member Ana Rivas-Logan. It was the first time that the KFHA has given supplemental scholarships outside of the Miami Dade College support through a program developed by a recently organized Scholarship Committee that included Don Kearns, chairman; Jane Walker, cochair; Frank Cobo and Aster Mohamed — all KFHA board members, under the direction of Miles E. Moss, president. Special thanks were given to Stan Hills, president, and the Metro-Dade Fire Fighters Union for sponsoring the luncheon for an estimated 150 attending. Seniors recognized were Edisha Coard, Corporate Academy South; Maria Urrutia, G. Holmes Braddock; Kiara Redman, John A. Ferguson; Steven A. Cabrera, Miami Killian; Yanely Ruiz, Southwest Miami. Sehrish Ali, a junior at Coral Reef High, joined those receiving $1,500 in KFHA scholarship funds and $50 bank deposit
Loehmann’s also has Miami-Dade locations at 18701 Biscayne Blvd. in Aventura and downtown at 3201 N. Miami Ave. “Loehmann’s is the perfect complement to existing tenants at The Palms at Town and Country,” said Mark Yacovetta, asset management director for TIAACREF Global Real Estate that purchased the 70-acre property formerly owned and managed by the Condina Group. “We continue to seek out retail opportunities that provide value for the community and our clients alike.” Since its founding in 1921, Loehmann’s has occupied a unique position in the fashion industry, best known for its legendary “Back Room” where contemporary designer clothing featured markdowns of up to 65 percent off original pricing, he said. “The Palms at Town and Country remains an attractive destination for retail tenants because of its unique combination of ideal proximity to neighboring residents, ease of access and expansive renovation,” said Michael J. Longmore, senior vice president with Jones Lang LaSalle, realty firm responsible for marketing and leasing. Phase 1 of The Palms includes the existing 292,730-square-foot Town Center

The officers eventually found the assailant in a second floor bedroom lying dead as a result of a self-inflicted wound. Maj. Alexander D. Casas, together with Martinez, praised the officers for responding courageously and skillfully to an unknown situation thereby becoming April’s “Officers of the Month.” “When a cop faces unknown danger, that’s a real test,” said Martinez, who recalled similar circumstances when he served as a police sergeant in the Hammocks District 20 years ago. Joining the ceremony were CAC chair Frank Irizarry, vice chair James Blough, and more than 20 citizen members of the Hammocks District CAC. BANDANA BANDIT ARREST EARNS KENDALL AWARD Kendall District’s newest “Officer of the Month” was honored for his performance, dedication and commitment to the Miami-Dade Police Department for helping capture a wanted felon,
identified by a red bandana worn during sandwich shop robberies. Officer Willie Mackey was singled out for the March 2009 award by coordinating a successful search and capture of a known felon who had twice worn a red bandana over his face during holdups at the Subway sandwich shop, 11281 SW 152 St. When Robbery Bureau Det. Jorge Arana provided Sgt. Alvaro Ortiz information of the named suspect, it was Mackey who helped locate the felon in the Richmond Heights area. The suspect was on probation for robbery, had an extensive criminal past for numerous violent crimes, and was considered “armed and dangerous.” Together with Officers Robin Pinkard, Justin Anglin and Brad Young, Mackey apprehended and searched the suspect without incident or injury, completed by discovery of the red bandana in the suspect’s back pocket. The award to Mackey was made on Apr. 29 by Kendall District Citizen Advisory Committee chair Barry White and Kendall District Commander Maj. Edward Herrera.

State overrules moving UDB Michael Miller EXECUTIVE EDITOR
AROUND TOWN In case you missed it, County Commission’s decisions to move the Urban Development Boundary in Kendall for two commercial developments were shot down last week by an administrative judge’s over-rule in Tallahassee. Both the Lowe’s Superstore on SW 8th Street and the 40-acre plot on Kendall Drive near SW 167 Avenue had received official blessing for commercial development despite loud objections voiced at land use hearings. Those who turned out in droves to voice UDB-movement opposition for the Parkland ‘Mega-Development’ off Krome Avenue near SW 136th Street had hoped that turndown would force Lennar and Century Homebuilders to postpone more public fireworks that waste a lot of time at taxpayer expense, especially in a stilldeclining housing market. Nevertheless, insiders indicate development interests will be back with new proposals by fall of this year, including resurrection of “Parkland 18,” a gimmick designation to underscore project approval still means construction is nearly a decade distant in 2018. Didn’t Abe tell us about fooling the people some of the time? Busy Agenda for East Kendall Community Council at its non-zoning meeting Wednesday, May 20, includes voting on resolutions to develop a senior center as part of the expansion of Indian Parks Hammock and expand its territory. Approving a guided busway project, a review of the Downtown Kendall urban
center planning and adoption of standards of U. S. Green Council building as a special project of Council member Jose Garciga are also on the docket. Session starts at 6:30 p.m. in the meeting room of Kendall Branch Library, 9101 SW 97th Avenue. New Turnpike construction projects in southwest Dade from US 1 to Allapattah Road; SW 216th Street to Southwest 152nd Street and Kendall Drive to SW 56th Street are designed to widen shoulders on ramps at Campbell Drive, Biscayne Drive, Tallahassee Road and Allapattah Road interchanges. One project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2009 but the rest will take until summer 2010 at a combined cost of $14.4 million, so watch your cornering, folks. It’s downright costly. Among blooming programs at area high schools: a Veterinarian Academy at Felix Varela Senior High School in West Kendall is becoming a full magnet schoolwithin-a-school program and is scheduled to serve 125 students when the fall term opens. The far western high school also is planning to open a global studies magnet for an additional 75 students who will enroll in August. Finally, Eddie Guzman of the faculty was named 2009 Mathematics Teacher of the Year, and Daniel Vinot Social Studies Teacher of the Year, all part of “good news” from Schools Supt. Alberto M. Carvalho who comments that positives often are lost in press coverage of schools during recent KFHA appearance. Legislature let us down in our time of need R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY The frontpage headline in the Miami Herald read: “Tallahassee scorecard: 1 new tax, little reform.” It is just another confirmation that our elected officials are neglecting their responsibilities to the people of Florida. Sales tax and real estate tax revenues are down. Tourism, and its related income, is down. Yet, our educational system needs greater support. Sick children are waiting for assistance. Where to find the money is the question. Our legislators headed to Tallahassee at the beginning of the recently ended session all fired up to find ways to shore up the state’s sagging revenues. Our hopes were soon shattered when we realized that it was back to the same old ways of running our state. The legislature’s concept is to spend little time looking for revenues to cover expenses and concentrate on looking for
excuses to justify cutting back on spending. The heck with our kids; just forget public transportation needs, and let parents find the money to send their kids to college. For years we have been trying to take cars off the road. South Florida’s commuter rail line, Tri-Rail, has grown in ridership every year. Tens of thousands of drivers have parked their cars and taken the train connecting Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties. Yet, our legislators have denied them the needed revenue to continue running. Cutbacks in scheduling are imminent. Condo owners are waking up in the morning to no electricity, no cable, and sometimes no telephone service, because their condo associations are out of money. Banks, owning foreclosed properties, are not required to pay maintenance fees, so there is no money to pay the condo’s bills. We need a law requiring banks to pay maintenance fees as long as they own the property. The proposed bill died in committee. School systems across the state do not have the funds to maintain and build needed schools. Rather than develop the needed funds, our legislature is giving county school boards the “authority” to increase their millage, collecting money
phone & internet under

$
VIEWPOINT from local homeowners. Tallahassee is dumping on the school boards. The legislators hope we will get angry at our schools and not at them. The cost of college tuition is going up 15 percent, and the Bright Futures scholarship program that has helped thousands of students pay for their education is in trouble. The program is short of money. The legislature should have reviewed the income limits placed on parents and would have found that many families don’t need the program as they could well afford to send their kids to college. The result is many needy students will not receive assistance. A program reform was ignored by Tallahassee. How did Tallahassee resolve the budget shortage? First they did something that should have happened years ago; they increased the sales tax on cigarettes by a dollar. Then, they raided trust fund accounts. They used the federal government’s $3 billion plus stimulus to cover

the state’s budget deficit. While the stimulus is only for two years, the budget items are ongoing. So, what will happen in two years? They barely reviewed sales tax exemptions. More than likely, lobbyists for various interests pressured legislators with the threat of losing campaign contributions, so tax exemption reform died in committee. Our elected officials in Tallahassee did find a few new sources of revenue, increasing fees. Watch out if you go fishing, buy a license plate, build an addition to your home, use a state or county park, or end up going to court. Another failed legislative session.

Some tips on avoiding the latest cyber-scams
Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY It turns out that Florida is now No. 3 in the country for complaints about cyberscams. We’re also one of the top states for cyber-scammers according to the latest national computer fraud figures. If you have an email account on your home or office computer, you know it doesn’t take long to be choked by all the bogus offers and special deals. By using emails from banks and credit card companies, scammers are targeting consumers, asking them to verify account information. Secret Service agent Matt Eddins, a cyber-crime investigator, said it’s a very big problem that continues to grow. Agent Eddins said many of the latest scams begin with the following statements: “There’s a problem with your account. We’re doing an
audit to make sure everything is good, so tell us again your account number.” In 2008, cyber-scam victims lost more than $264 million, averaging about $931 in each scam. That’s up some $25 million from 2007. The top scams include ones that arise from undelivered products, Internet auction fraud and credit card identity theft. The criminals are getting more and more tech savvy, learning how to take it to the next step. The feds also are turning it up a notch, however. They’re telling consumers how to avoid getting ripped off through a series of computer-fraud warning videos, which can be found online at <www.onguardonline.gov/>. If you receive an email or anything asking for personal identifiers, Eddins recommends that you seriously consider whether it could be a scam. Blackberry and iPhone users also should remember to take security measures before submitting any personal banking or credit card information. BY LORENA GUERRA-MACIAS Commissioner Joe A. Martinez and students from the Heritage School made reading a priority on Friday, Apr. 24, at the Kendale Lakes Library. The children joined the commissioner as he read In the Tall, Tall Grass by Denise Fleming, laughing and pretending to be all the small critters who live outdoors. The story time was conducted in honor of National Library Week, an annual celebration of the contributions of our nation’s libraries and librarians. Although the American Library Association officially observed the week from Apr. 12 to 18, Miami-Dade Public
Library System decided to extend the event until Apr. 29. During this time, community leaders read to children at various libraries around the county and patrons enjoyed special programs at their local branches. “With the popularity of the Internet and other technologies, sometimes children don’t realize that one of the best resources they have for information and recreation is the library, Commissioner Martinez said. “This event is a way to remind them of the great things their local library branch can offer. For more information on events happening near your library, visit the Miami-Dade Public Library System’s website at <www.mdpls.org>.

More than 700 celebrate at CCHS Anniversary Gala
Pictured (l-r) are John Lynskey (Class of ’78 and current CCHS teacher), Br. Kevin Handibode (CCHS president) and Br. Eugene Trzecieski (longtime CCHS teacher). BY CRISTINA CRUZ More than 700 people attended the Christopher Columbus High School (CCHS) 50th Anniversary Gala at the Doral Golf Resort and Spa on the evening of Apr. 4. Among the attendees were hundreds of alumni from the past five decades, current and past faculty members, and current and alumni parents. The night was all about socializing, dancing, reminiscing and fun, but most of all it was about celebrating Columbus’ rich history and tradition for excellence. Several former CCHS principals and many other former and present faculty members attended including Br. Hugh Andrew, Br. Edmund Sheehan, Br. Patrick
McNamara, Br. Patrick McNulty and Dr. Manuel Guerra who celebrated his 92nd birthday that night. A video was played that contained archival photographs and heartfelt interviews from many alumni and teachers who also were present at the gala including: Carter Burrus and John Roche (former teachers), alumni Carlos Gimenez, Bob Linfors, Pedro “Joe” Greer, Rafael Penalver, and the Mas Brothers (Jorge, Juan Carlos, and Jose), as well as Marist Brothers Kevin Handibode and Michael Brady. The video is now available for purchase through the school’s website along with the CCHS history book, titled 50 Years Exploring, that was written by Br. Eugene and John Lynskey (Class of ’78).

A breast imaging center of excellence awarded by the American College of Radiology We accept most major insurance plans.
Luis Cocco teaches traditional and Olympic style Tae Kwon Do at Hero Martial Arts, located at 17049 S. Dixie Hwy. “We have something for everyone,” Cocco said. “We start at age 3 and we go all the way up. Right now my range is from 3 to 50.” The school already has an expansive schedule and can accommodate more adults. “We have six classes a day,” he said. “We also offer a few classes Saturday mornings and I’m offering a women’s only self defense class twice a week in the mornings, on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:15 to 10:15.” Cocco is a sixth degree black belt. “Black belts in Tae Kwon Do go to ninth degree. Fourth is like a master’s degree, fifth is like a doctorate,” he said. Cocco has taught physical education and martial arts at several community centers, including the Dave and Mary Alper Jewish Community Center in Kendall, for the past 10-12 years. He also has worked at private schools such as Temple Samu-El, Temple Beth Am and Bet Breira. In fact, he was the aftercare director at Bet Breira for several years. At the same time he is running his own school, Cocco is working on a degree in exceptional student education. He only has about a year to go before graduation. Although it has been a struggle juggling college classes and opening his gym, he said he loves having his own school. “The school is incredible. We offer a lot of services. I have 34 classes a week.
We do different fundraisers, and different charitable events. We do competitions. Our kids continue to excel. We’re trying to prepare for the Junior Olympics and U.S. Nationals.” Tae Kwon Do is an official Olympic sport and those who place in the top four at the nationals can go to the Olympic team trials or to the Pan American Games or the World Championships. “Our kids are gearing up and preparing,” he said. “We have a great group and a great program.” While they are not yet ready, going to the nationals is the eventual goal. He has a number of students who are close to a black belt now and next year he expects to have several students who could be eligible for U.S. Nationals. At the same time Cocco works with kids who could go on to the Olympics, he also teaches martial arts to special needs students. “We have one class dedicated on Saturdays to special needs students,” he said. “If I have an autistic child, depending on what level of autism, he may be able to participate in my regular program. “At the end of the day, martial arts is what I do and what I love to do, and what I will do. I’m not going to stop running my school,” he said, adding that at the same time, he loves working with special needs kids. “The class on Saturdays is by nature very small. It’s something I love to do; if we can get more kids enrolled, we might be able to dedicate a few more hours a week.” For more information about Hero Martial Arts, call 305-232-4376.

Charitable giving offers tax benefits John Molkentin MONEY MATTERS Through charitable gift giving, you can show appreciation to charities you admire while receiving tax savings and other benefits. To help you start thinking about developing a strategy, here is some general information about philanthropic gift-giving. Giving to charities — Most charitable gifts also provide you with a current year income tax deduction. There are several types of charitable beneficiaries, including public charities, pooled income funds, private foundations, donor-advised funds and Charitable Remainder Trusts. Charitable remainder tr usts — One effective and popular choice for individuals who wish to leave a lasting legacy to their favorite charity, but also reap vari-
ous financial benefits, is the charitable remainder trust. In exchange for a future gift to charity, the charitable remainder trust provides you with several major tax and economic benefits. A charitable remainder trust allows you to: • Defer capital gains taxes • Increase diversification and cash flow • Receive a current-year federal income tax deduction • Reduce future estate tax liabilities Remember, a charitable remainder trust is irrevocable. Assets in the trust eventually pass to charity, not to your family. You should work with your tax and legal advisors so that a charitable remainder trust, or any other gift-giving strategy, fits into your overall estate plan. If it does, you could potentially enjoy significant tax and economic benefits, as well as leave a lasting legacy to your favorite charity.

Wine event raises funds for the Family Resource Center
Pictured at the Wine and Food Tasting are (l-r) Tony Bayona, Marianne Perkins, Drew Kern and Matthew Ladd. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
BY BETH COHEN In honor of Child Abuse Awareness Month, Crown Wine & Spirits near The Falls recently hosted a Wine and Food Tasting event to raise funds and friends for the Family Resource Center of South Florida, a leading child welfare agency in Miami. The event raised awareness about child abuse and neglect, and encouraged the support of children and families in need. More than 40 people attended the tasting that included approximately 20 different wines, four tables featuring a spirit with appropriate “mixers,” artisan cheeses, meats and the like. Ernie Dalvisio, a Crown Wine & Spirits chef, gave a cooking demonstration and a wine connoisseur was at each table to educate attendees about each featured wine. One of the highlights of the night was
prominent Miami attorney Mark Tobin, who introduced his own line of fine wines from Mattebella Vineyards. The wine label currently produces three wines, two red and one white. A fourth wine, a French provencial style rosé, will be introduced in the summer of 2009. The Family Resource Center is driven by the principle that nothing is more fundamental to a community than the safety and well being of its children. Its goal is to prevent and change dysfunctional parent/ child interaction patterns, promote positive self-concepts, and build healthy relationships to prevent child abuse and neglect through family support, crisis intervention, housing location, family preservation, parent education and counseling. For more information about the Family Resource Center, visit online at <www.frcflorida.org>.

Jimmy Johnson finds second home in Florida Keys BY ROBERT HAMILTON The Big Chill (now aptly called Jimmy Johnson’s Big Chill at Fisherman’s Cove) is sporting an inviting new theme to entice both residents and tourists alike: “Come Chill Out with JJ.” “The convenience of having a place to play just a few miles or so from where I sleep was a perfect find,” Johnson said. “And not only that, they’re allowing me to make it even more perfect.” With the championship coach’s astute input, The Big Chill is now undergoing big improvements. The new Jimmy Johnson’s Big Chill is emerging with enhanced indoor/outdoor waterfront dining, JJ’s Sports Bar, Raw Bar, Tiki Bar and a Pool and Cabana Club. This open-to-the-public waterfront dining and entertainment facility is having its grand opening party on Memorial Day weekend starting on Friday, May 22, through Monday, May 25, with JJ and friends in attendance, of course. On Friday night, Jimmy will be hosting a poolside VIP party event with his friends. During the off-season when Johnson is not chatting it up on Sundays for Fox Sports, he’ll be putting on his flip flops, berthing his boat, and entertaining his friends somewhere within the confines of the Big Chill at Fisherman’s Cove. In addition to the Big Chill, Jimmy Johnson’s Fisherman’s Cove is an exclusive Private Residence Club located on the property. The club is offering exclusive deeded ownership in six luxurious $2-plus-million threebedroom residences to a total of only 48 fortunate own-

ers — complete with waterfront resort amenities, including The Big Chill — for a fraction of the price, approximately $299,000. Jimmy Johnson’s Fisherman’s Cove is
making vacation home ownership irresistible again. Owners enjoy virtually unlimited vacations in the unique private residences, subject only to the club’s generous and flexible reservation policies. And residents will have exclusive use of their own boat to go fishing, diving, or sunset cruising. Digital Capital International Sales Group, exclusive sales and marketing partner for Fisherman’s Cove, is very excited about the change. “I believe the establishment will quickly become a destination for years to come; there is nothing like it in the Florida Keys,” said Phil Perko, president. They not only welcome Johnson’s hands-on participation in the redesign of Fisherman’s Cove and The Big Chill, but his invaluable aid in greeting potential Fisherman’s Cove owners and Big Chill customers whenever he is at the resort. “Our owners loved the place before, but now with Jimmy they love it more. He brings an enormous amount of positive energy that is contagious to everyone around him,” said Rich Cipriano, vice president and broker. For sales information, call Cipriano at 305 608-1690 or send email to <ciprianor@digitalcapitalgroup.com>. VW Routan is derived from Chrysler Town & Country Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS Volkswagen’s new 2009 Routan is a chip off the old Chrysler block. It’s VW’s first minivan since the ill-fated EuroVan six years ago and is derived from Chrysler’s Town & Country vehicle, with some notable adaptations — it has a different interior, a Volkswagen exterior and a stiffer suspension. The seven-passenger Routan should appeal to American families, even though it lacks some of the features offered in the Town & Country. For example, the popular Stow ’n Go and Swivel ’n Go seating have been eliminated in the Routan because VW designers opted to make them plusher and more comfortable; thus they don’t fit into the floorboard storage areas. However, the third-row seats do fold into the floor, and the second-row seats can be
removed to create a flat load floor and good hauling space. The Routan is offered in three models — S starting at $24,700, SE at $29,600 and SEL at $33,200 — with two engine choices, both from Chrysler: a 197 hp, 3.8-liter V-6 and a 253 hp, 4.0liter V-6. The 3.8 engine (16/23 mpg) provides a nice urban driving experience, while the 4.0 engine (17/25 mpg) has a bit more power and is better suited for highway driving. Both engines are mated to a standard six-speed automatic transmission. The Routan is easily identified as a Volkswagen by the stylized front grille and large VW logo, and other exterior treatments. The interior is comfortable and detailed, with quality materials, beautiful textures and rich colors. And there are many functional features, including a conversation mirror, rear seat entertainment system with two nine-inch screens for second and third row passengers, touch screen navigation with 30 GB JoyBox Multi-Media Entertainment system, dual power sliding doors with power windows, power fold third-row seating and 13 cup hold-

ers. Remote keyless entry with remote vehicle start system is an option, and there are standard 12V power outlets and an available 115V AC outlet for powering up phones, MP3 players and game consoles. Routan also comes with many safety features, including standard front and side curtain airbags. Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP) — standard on all 2009 Volkswagens — and
hydraulic brake assist add an extra level of safety to the Routan. Also available are High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights for improved visibility and an ultrasonic rear-park assist.
Ron Beasley is the automotive editor for Miami’s Community Newspapers. He may be contacted by calling 305-662-2277, ext. 261, or by addressing email correspondence to <LetsTalkCars@aol.com>.
Can you hear conversations, but not understand the words clearly? Does it sound like others are mumbling? This could be the first indication of hearing loss. As people begin to lose their hearing, volume does not necessarily decrease, like lowering a radio. It actually feels more like listening through a broken speaker, where you can hear but not understand what was said. To make matters worse we may lose more volume in some frequencies than others causing conversations to sound muffled and difficult to follow. Dr. Joseph K. Duran can help you understand your hearing loss and determine if hearing aids are right for you. Select the most appropriate technology for your lifestyle with the help of our exclusive “Choice Fitting Program “. Our program takes into account the for main factors that go into selecting the right hearing aid for your needs:
