Budget cutting ‘top priority,’ Sorenson says BY RICHARD YAGER n a wide-ranging discussion of issues, Miami-Dade District Eight Commissioner Katy Sorenson, serving as commission chair for the 2009-10 budget, said her “first priority will be how to maintain county services in the fiscal year ahead despite anticipated revenue reductions. “We’ll know more after the tax roll is delivered June 1 to determine what we can expect property taxes to produce,” she told a Citizen Advisory Committee audience, May 27, at Hammocks Police District station, noting that a revenue decline of 25 percent is anticipated. “Combined with state funding cutbacks, we’ll be facing one of the most difficult periods I’ve ever seen to main-

tain parks, public works and other basic services as we’ve been accustomed to seeing them in the past,” added Sorenson, who was first elected to the county commission in 1994. She said that commercial properties “may have to bear the lion’s share” to make up differences to avoid severe cutbacks in service areas, predicting that the county manager will “wind up providing a smorgasbord of options of who and where to cut back costs.” Named to head the commission budg-

eting committee by commission chair Dennis C. Moss, Sorenson said, “Although I was honored by the appointment, finding new ways to cut costs after two successive years chopping $250 million left us with few choices to further reduce costs. “Even so, we are going to have to find cuts totaling another $250 million or higher, just to keep everything from

BY LEE STEPHENS Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez, Miami-Dade Commission chair Dennis C. Moss, Commissioner Carlos Gimenez and Commissioner Natacha Seijas on May 22 unveiled a new water reclamation pilot plant at the South Dade Wastewater Treatment Plant. Attendees were able to see water that has been processed through various stages of treatment, including micro-filtration, reverse osmosis and disinfection via ultraviolet light and peroxide. “Providing clean water is one of the most basic and important services the county provides,” Mayor Alvarez said. “It is a service that is directly used by residents and visitors each and every day.

That is why projects like the High Level Disinfection at the South Dade Wastewater Treatment Plant are so important to our stewardship of our natural resources.” Miami-Dade County Water and Sewer Department officials also provided an update on the progress of the 14 HighLevel Disinfection projects which will allow large-scale water recycling to take place. The project, which began more than a year ago, is making progress, creating hundreds of construction jobs and protecting the environment. Once this reclaimed water project is complete, it will recharge the county’s groundwater with approximately 23 million gallons of reclaimed water every day.

BUDGET, from page 1 ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– CAMPAIGN, from page 1 –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– trash pickups to park programs operating as they normally do,” she said, noting that budget cuts for two previous fiscal years largely reduced staff. “Now, we face service cuts, having gone as far as we can eliminating personnel.” Proposing salary and wage reductions as one answer, Sorenson said “criticism that the county attorney makes $300,000 must be examined in relation to the private sector which would probably pay close to $500,000 for comparable services.” Asked about a commitment of $351 million in a county bond issue for the new Marlins baseball stadium, Sorenson said she believed “it was a mistake to go ahead in this down economic time,” particularly when “ownership retains stadium naming rights which may well equal their contributed share.” To provide “good news” as balance, Sorenson called attention to the new “Miami-Dade Blue” health insurance program, designed to assist an estimated 600,000 uninsured county individuals, as well as sustaining the county’s Public Health Trust finances that largely accrue to Jackson Memorial Hospital, which

maintains needed services not otherwise available to the indigent. Other observations: Transit: “We can’t do away with the surtax (half-penny sales tax) despite the way funds were used; instead of abolishing the tax, we have to find a ways to better use that resource to continue transportation services so many people depend upon.” Fine arts: “It’s important to continue to find ways to fund cultural and arts programming for our people and community, and, remember, subsidized dollars return up to $25 back for every dollar the county appropriates.” FPL: “We need to review carefully every step the power company proposes for its new reactors at Turkey Point, particularly to what extent development requires digging a new pit that could cause extensive saltwater intrusion into below-ground fresh water systems.” Sorenson concluded her remarks, complimenting CAC members for monitoring neighborhood security with police. “Democracy is not a spectator sport,” she said.

OPENINGS FOR THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE PUBLIC HEALTH TRUST Applications are now being accepted for the Board of Trustees of the Public Health Trust of Miami-Dade County, the governing authority for Jackson Health System. All applications must be received by Diane Collins, Acting Division Chief, Clerk of the Board, at 111 NW 1st Street, Suite 17-202, Miami, Florida, 33128 no later than June 3, 2009 by 4:00pm. now,” said William D. Talbert III, CDME, president and CEO of GMCVB. “The deals are incredible at places that attract visitors from around the world. Plus, residents can feel good about strengthening our economy when they spend their dollars locally. Buying, playing and staying local helps retain jobs and expands Greater Miami’s tax base.” The “Buy, Play and Stay Local” program is being supported by a comprehensive marketing campaign that includes radio and newspaper ads, public relations and a dedicated website — <www.MiamiDealsForLocals.com>. Residents are encouraged to check the website regularly for updates on special offers. Among the deals currently being promoted: Miami Spa Month — Nearly 20 of Miami’s premier spas will offer $99 treatments — normally valued at $199 and above — during July. The promotion was so popular last year that it was extended for a second month. Miami Spice Restaurant Month — Upwards of 100 Miami restaurants will offer $23 lunch and $36 dinner prix fixe menus during August and September, an average discount of 30-60 percent off the regular value. Beginning on May 1, the GMCVB launched the first-ever Spring Miami Spice where more than 50 of Miami’s finest restaurants are offering the $23 lunch and $36 dinner prix fixe menus. Spring Miami Spice runs through May 31 and has all the ingredients of the successful Miami Spice summer program, which launched in 2001. Accommodations — More than 50 package deals at a broad range of hotels and resorts throughout Greater

Miami and the Beaches now are available on the website. Special packages range from complimentary nights to special upgrades. Participants in the promotion include Chamber South, Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce, Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce, Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce, Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce and South Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. The concept of “staycations” — where individuals and families stay home and take day trips to local attractions — became popular last spring as the summer travel season approached and gas prices were reaching record highs. With the national economy now in full recession, many people continue to look for ways to cut back on expenses, including travel. “Fortunately for people in Miami, staycations are hardly a hardship,” Talbert noted. There is a spectacular array of options in Greater Miami and the Beaches for planning a fabulous vacation close to home that will help make our economy strong and won’t break the bank.” The Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) is a nonprofit sales and marketing organization with a mission to attract visitors to Greater Miami and the Beaches for leisure, business and conventions. For a vacation guide visit <www.MiamiAndBeaches.com> or call 1-888-76-Miami or 305-447-7777. To reach the GMCVB offices dial 305539-3000. FPL’s Turkey Point reactor scrutinized Michael Miller EXECUTIVE EDITOR

AROUND TOWN We expect that you’ll be reading more about FPL’s plan to add two nuclear reactors at its Turkey Point energy-generating plant. Commissioner Katy Sorenson updated a West Kendall audience last week on the utility’s efforts to expand over the next 12 years, warning the public should continue questioning what they’re told by FPL. Remember how our feisty Comish got ‘stood up’ at a session she organized this spring to have FPL folks answer public concerns? Unit 3 at the plant, that began operation in 1972, went off line in mid-March for refueling when a control rod appeared stuck. Although replaced, it raised serious questions about maintenance when a lead employee quit over the incident. Critics continue to question how long such reactors can safely operate. FPL says once a nuclear plant is operating, it produces electricity at a much lower cost than do other FPL energy sources. The utility has not responded, however, to questions about how much more it spent on fuel each day that Unit 3 was out of service. Commissioner Sorenson’s primary concern is the extent of excavation needed for deeply dug foundations for the giant reactors, possibly unleashing further saltwater intrusion to endanger aquifers that recharge our fresh water supply. Overall impact on the environment, however, remains the most significant concern and deserves constant attention of both press and public. So What’s New in Westchester? Community Council 10 has forwarded its 2009-2010 fiscal budget recommenda-

tions to the county, urging infrastructure improvements on Flagler Street between SW 57th Avenue and Florida Turnpike as top priority. More police bike patrols and a comprehensive traffic study throughout the district are two other requests to improve the area adjoining Kendall in the northwest. In the South, our Redland neighbors are looking for more operational funds to support the West Perrine Aquatic Center, purchase of agricultural land development rights and details on BBC bond spending, as well as boosting manpower in the Hammocks District Police “Agricultural Unit,” the “Agri-Cops” described in a recent issue of the Gazette as the security force for 400 acres, more or less, of boondocks and farmlands, south to the Monroe County line. Couldn’t help but enjoy the Herald’s recent story exposing County Commission “Discretionary Fund” accounts. Objectors call them “political pork,” solidifying incumbent seats thru largesse dispensed as “contributions” for their constituencies. Commissioner Rebecca Sosa did that earlier in May with a $5000 check to “help” the Barnes Park’s learn-to-swim program. Such donations are really part of a $9.5 million tax fund allotted to 13 Commission members to use as they see fit in their Districts. Next time you see those big checks handed out, you might ask: Is that your personal money — or my taxes? Thought of the Day: What’s money? A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and goes to bed at night and in between does what he wants to do. — Bob Dylan Richard Yager contributed to this column. Got any tips? South Florida’s Tri-Rail derailed by Florida Legislature R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY We had a good thing going in South Florida. Thousands of cars were kept off the highways as travelers took to the train to commute through Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. Every year more and more travelers took Tri-Rail as their form of transportation. Now, thanks to the Florida Legislature, the trains will run less frequently during the coming year, and the year after, not at all. The Tri-Rail board recently voted to cut service from 50 to 30 train trips a day and to eliminate weekend and holiday runs. Also, without additional funding, the whole operation will be closed down by early 2011. Adding insult to injury the federal government will demand the return of $256 million given the state to add a parallel set of train tracks that was

designed to make the runs more efficient, not having to stop for trains coming in the other direction. Why the cuts in Tri-Rail funding? The answer is simple. Our Florida Legislature would rather cut service, thwarting a positive move in mass transportation, than have the guts to find the money needed to keep the trains rolling. Incredibly the legislature wanted to fund a mid-state, cross-state commuter train that was projected to have a far, far lower ridership than South Florida’s Tri-Rail. Fortunately for Florida taxpayers that move failed in the legislative process. Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, running short on funds to finance their county operations, notified Tri-Rail that they were being forced to cut back on their contributions to the system. With greatly reduced county funding and the absence of state funding in the future, the $9 million funding shortfall places the future of Tri-Rail in doubt. Tri-Rail came into existence in 1989 offering an alternate form of transportation during the reconstruction of Interstate 95. Since 1989 the system has

VIEWPOINT enjoyed ever-increasing use. Ridership has increased from 7,500 a day in 2005 to about 14,000 a day in 2009. Now its future is in doubt. If every rider is forced to use his or her auto for transportation, we will see 14,000 more cars on the road each business day. Miami-Dade and Broward counties recently announced that they will be inaugurating an inter-county bus system as early as this coming January. The buses will run between the counties using the express lanes on Interstate 95. This is both good news and bad news. The good news is that there will be some form of inter-county public transportation. The bad news is that the legislature might use this as an excuse to end discussions on creating a dedicated funding system for Tri-Rail. It is ironic that a recent Miami Herald contained an insert from the county’s Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) telling the community about

“Transportation for a New Century.” The publication tells us that the multimillion-dollar Miami Intermodal Center (MIC), where buses, trains, cabs, car rentals and private cars will all meet to provide easy access to the airport, contains a terminal for Tri-Rail. The transportation hub, currently under construction around the existing Tri-Rail tracks at a cost of $1.7 billion, includes a terminal for Tri-Rail that might not be in existence when the Intermodal Center opens. How poorly our elected officials plan and spend the taxpayers’ money. Anyone want to buy a like-new train?

Can you hear conversations, but not understand the words clearly? Does it sound like others are mumbling? This could be the first indication of hearing loss. As people begin to lose their hearing, volume does not necessarily decrease, like lowering a radio. It actually feels more like listening through a broken speaker, where you can hear but not understand what was said. To make matters worse we may lose more volume in some frequencies than others causing conversations to sound muffled and difficult to follow. Dr. Joseph K. In spite of bank failure, FDIC keeps it ‘business as usual’

Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY The headlines are going to scare a lot of people: “Florida’s biggest bank fails, triggering the biggest U.S. banking failure of the year. Coral Gables-based BankUnited was taken over by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) and a new private investment group has taken its place. According to the Treasury Department, BankUnited failed because of the growing number of defaults on its adjustable rate mortgages. This didn’t come as a surprise, though. Since last year, BankUnited has been on a watch list of troubled banks and was the subject of numerous legal orders from federal banking regulators. The takeover is going to cost the FDIC’s bank guarantee fund some $4.9 billion, and its insurance fund is reportedly depleted by

about 60 percent from its 34 bank takeovers this year. We’re now on a 15-year record pace for bank failures. What does this mean for you and me? For most people, it will be “business as usual. The FDIC is guaranteeing that your deposits are safe up-to-the-coverage limits. However, it also is a brutal reminder that our banks are still reeling from the mortgage mess of allowing consumers to buy properties they couldn’t afford. In BankUnited’s case, they found themselves at “ground zero for one of the foreclosure capitals of the country. They tried finding new investors to raise enough money to stay in business, but they finally just ran out of time. Bankruptcy is a perfectly legitimate way to stop foreclosures and repossessions, put an end to lawsuits, protect paychecks from garnishments and regain control of your life. When filing for bankruptcy, it must be filed correctly in order to for it be successful. It is important to consult a bankruptcy attorney or debt relief lawyer in your area to ensure that you fully understand your options regarding bankruptcy and whether this is the best decision for your financial future. Personal bankruptcy is filed either as a Chapter 7 or a Chapter 13: Chapter 7—Liquidation—wipes out most of your debts and in return, you may have to give up some of your property. If you are considering a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy and you are behind in your mortgage, make certain that you first reach a loan modification/loan workout or refinance with your lender. In the Chapter 7 Bankruptcy there will not be a loan modification option of your existing mortgage and, therefore, if you stop paying your mortgage you could lose your home. Your homestead is exempt. However, it can be foreclosed on if you do not pay. Chapter 13–Reorganization— enables you to pay off all or a portion of your debts during a three to five year period, yet does not require you to give up any of your assets to pay creditors. As long as you keep making payments, creditors will not bother you for payment or continue the foreclosure against your property. In the Chapter 13 Bankruptcy you can save your house.

The following is a list of facts you should know about filing bankruptcy: • Bankruptcy is a matter of public record. • A credit counseling course and financial management course are required. • Creditors will be prohibited from contacting you concerning your debt. • Florida law will exempt certain assets. • You may suffer some discrimination in future employment opportunities. • A stigma may still be attached to filing bankruptcy. • A record of filing for bankruptcy may remain on your credit profile for up to 10 years. • By eliminating your debt in Chapter 7 or making payments in a Chapter 13, you will immediately improve your credit score. In the midst of an economic crisis, please try not to forget the importance of life and your priorities. I have clients who are falling apart not only financially, but also emotionally and physically. Saving your home is not the only solution. A job is needed that can pay for the revised monthly payment. Activities to stimulate good health and family events to create memorable moments with children, family and friends are a must. Take all the necessary steps to preserve what is important to you by taking advantage all of your options. There are options available for you. And, more continue to come with evolving federal and state laws. Know your rights and know your options. Call an attorney today to guide you towards stabilizing your life. Kendall’s London Square BY ROSALYNN SALINAS TotalBank, one of the strongest and largest community banks in South Florida, continues its expansion strategy with the grand opening of its newest branch, located at 13400 SW 120 St. in West Kendall. The branch represents the institution’s 15th location, further increasing TotalBank’s footprint across Miami-Dade County. The new location is TotalBank’s second in Kendall and is part of the 450,000-square-foot London Square shopping center. The branch will feature conveniences such as ample parking, drive-through services, and state-of-the-art facilities. Led by an experienced all-star team, the branch is fully staffed to offer a full range of personalized products and services to individuals and businesses. As part of the grand

opening festivities, TotalBank will be offering exclusive promotions to West Kendall branch customers for a limited time. “The opening of our second branch in Kendall represents our continued growth and the solid position we have maintained in the South Florida business and residential community for more than 35 years,” said Bill Heffernan, CEO of TotalBank. “We feel a strong commitment to our customers and our goal is to continue to grow and meet the financial needs of the growing Kendall community.” Headquartered in Miami, TotalBank is one of the strongest, and largest, community banks in South Florida, with more than $2 billion in assets and 15 locations throughout Miami-Dade County. The Transportation Trust – Moving Forward The Citizens’ Independent Transportation Trust (Transportation Trust) is the oversight board created as part of the half-cent sales surtax and the People’s Transportation Plan approved by the voters of Miami-Dade County in 2002. Since the passage of the Plan there have been significant improvements to our public transportation system and roadways. These include the addition of millions of miles of new bus routes, the purchase of more than 262 new buses and the funding of 21 municipal shuttle bus systems throughout the County — from Coral Gables to Aventura to Hialeah. More than 173,000 senior citizens and veterans ride public transportation for free under the Golden Passport and Patriot Passport programs.

Honorable Anna Ward, Ph.D.

The first leg of the Metrorail system expansion will break ground this May. This $525 million project — the Miami Intermodal Center/Earlington Heights Connector — will bring Metrorail to Miami International Airport. A new fleet of railcars and Metromover cars are also being purchased. In the transportation area, more than 390 miles of roadways have been improved. A new Advanced Traffic Management System that will ease traffic congestion throughout our community is currently being installed. Traffic circles have been constructed and school safety crossing zones have been improved.

There is, however, much yet to be done. There has been great concern over promises made and the ability to fund those projects. The Trust shares these concerns. The Trust is also encouraged and applauds the candor, honesty and quality of the discussion occurring within Miami-Dade County and the community. Recent events and dialogue sponsored by Mayor Carlos Alvarez; Commission Chair Dennis C. Moss; Transit, Infrastructure and Roads Committee Chair Barbara J. Jordan; the entire County Commission and County Manager George M. Burgess are all positive developments.

The Transportation Trust is an important participant and partner in working with Miami-Dade County and the community as we produce results — not only to meet the current pressing needs of the transit system, but also to develop creative funding solutions that will continue the expansion of critically-needed transit corridor improvements. The Trust currently has three Board positions available. We invite interested members of the community to apply for nomination to the Trust so that you can become part of the solution to our transportation needs. BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD In today’s economy, people are looking for ways to turn unused items they have in their homes into moneymaking treasure. One way of doing that is by selling off unused gold jewelry. Some companies have gold owners send them the gold items in specially market envelopes and then give them a quote. But Countrywide Gold Buyers is different — it buys the gold on the spot. Countywide Gold Buyers has kiosks at Dadeland Mall, Miami International Mall and a store at The Falls Shopping Center, with plans for additional locations. Edwin Carrion, the company’s chief financial officer, who will oversee the Miami locations, and company president Luis Junco explained what they do. “We’re looking for used, broken and outdated gold jewelry,” Carrion said. “We buy gold, silver and platinum.” Because of the state of the economy, Carrion and Junco recognize there is a need for people to make money. “We recycle your gold for cash,” Carrion said. “Everybody is doing the ‘green’ thing, but they are forgetting to recycle the most precious metals, which are gold, silver and platinum.” Junco said this is a new market they are exploring while helping people who need cash. “Our two goals are to help the community and help the environment,” he says. “We’re not a pawn shop. We provide a safe, secure environment for people to come and sell their jewelry.” Countrywide Gold Buyers works directly with refineries where the jewelry is melted down for resale to jewelers. They weigh and test the jewelry, cutlery

or even gold teeth in front of the customer. “We actually show the prices to the customer,” Junco said. “People come in and say this is 10-carat gold and we tell them ‘no,’ it’s 18 carats and pay them for 18 carats.” Plus, National Gold Buyers will not pull that trick where they see a valuable piece and lowball the customer and then turn around and resell it for a huge profit. Carrion said if a customer comes in with antique pieces that could be more valuable “as is” instead of buying the piece and melting it down, they’ll suggest the owner try selling the pieces at antique shows or look for other places where they will get the value they deserve. “We tell them what it’s worth,” Junco said. “We are fair. We do what we do because we want people to trust us. Not many people know about jewelry. We don’t resell anything. We are not estate brokers.” Junco and Carrion said they want the public to understand they are not like pawnbrokers who buy jewelry for far less than its value. They post their prices and weigh the jewelry in front of the customers. And they give the customer a check right on the spot. They also report everything they buy to the police, which is why they require identification from sellers. Clients can make money. Carrion said the average customer sells $800 to $1,000 in gold items. And those hosting a gold party at National Gold Buyers can make even more. “We’ll close the store and we’ll purchase the gold and you get 10 percent of the sales,” Carrion said. “You can come here and drink some wine and eat some cheese.” For more information, call 305-4676694 or visit online at <www.bringgoldgetcash.com>.

Commissioner Moss honors CRHS basketball champions

Pictured (l-r) are Coral Reef High coach Gaston “Chachi” Rodriguez; Miami-Dade County Commission chair Dennis C. Moss, and Coral Reef Barracudas Basketball team members Steven Lopez, Jerron Granberry and Brandon Vickers. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

BY LEE STEPHENS Members of the Coral Reef High School boys’ basketball team are still celebrating their recent state championship and Miami-Dade County Commission chair Dennis C. Moss recognized the winning coach and team on May 21 in the Miami-Dade County Commission chambers. In early March, the Coral Reef Barracudas came from behind and defeated Orlando Olympia in Lakeland with a final score of 69-60. In addition, Coral Reef’s boys basketball team made history by becoming the first school from the south Miami-Dade area to win a boys basketball championship in 50 years. Sports is not the only thing on which Coral Reef High prides itself. The school is very big on academics.

“It’s amazing how dedicated they are both to their basketball and their class work,” said second-year coach Gaston “Chachi” Rodriguez. “I’ll have kids that are getting A’s and B’s, and they’ll still be stressing about doing better.” Only a handful of teammates from Coral Reef were able to take part in the presentation at the County Commission chambers. More than a dozen had to remain at school due to final exams and end of the year commitments. Commissioner Moss saw to it that each member of the team was recognized and given a Certificate of Appreciation for his efforts. “I am proud of these young men who are committed to both academics and athletics,” Moss said. “I’m sure this is just the beginning of great things for each one of them. Keep up the good work.”

Your emergency portable TV may not work after hurricane BY HAL FELDMAN We entered another South Florida hurricane season on June 1. We all know the drill; we’ve done it countless times before. Prepare the shutters, check the generators, get fuel and make sure you have plenty of fresh batteries for the flashlights and your emergency portable TV. But this year, fresh batteries for the TV likely won’t be enough. Most of us will need a fresh TV too. On June 12, 2009, the FCC and U.S. Government requirement to have all broadcast television stations permanently shut down their analog signals goes into effect. This means most TV sets that are not using cable or satellite boxes simply will stop working. More importantly, nearly all of the portable TV sets people have packed away for emergency use become instantly defunct. So, if you are used to huddling around your battery-powered emergency TV to watch news reporters flap in the breeze as they tell you about the latest hurricane damage, you’ll need to buy a new set that has a digital tuner (ATSC). Otherwise, it’ll just be you and the radio. And for those who do have satellite or cable plugged into an analog TV; don’t forget that should (or more likely, when) the cable or satellite feed goes out, you are in the same boat. Nothing but snow to keep you company as the winds howl outside. The reason for the analog shut down is clear — or more accurately high-def. It is the ATSC digital signal that is capable of producing beautiful, high-resolution HDTV images on our ever-expansive flatscreen TVs. It’s the future of all TV. During the past two years, all broadcast television stations have been dual broadcasting their

programming in both analog (NTSC) and digital (ATSC) formats to accommodate viewers during the transition. The June 12 analog shutoff is the next logical step in the move to HDTV. While there are many benefits to the digital signal, the lack of backwards compatibility is a huge drawback, especially for Floridians during hurricanes. For the uninformed, our next weather event could be a rude awakening. That’s why, as a technology consultant, I felt it important to write this article. It is important to know that this potential “communication emergency” is real. Thankfully, the solution is simple. Buying a new emergency ATSC portable television is not an expensive proposition. At around $100, it’s pretty much a nobrainer. I have seen and recommend buying either the Haier 7-inch portable TV (Model HLT71) or the Coby 8-inch portable TV (Model TF-TV891). Both are sold through Amazon.com (use this link http://tinyurl.com/hurricaneTVs). In addition to the new portable TV, you also may want to consider an external HDTV antenna. Based on my research in the areas of Pinecrest and Palmetto Bay, digital broadcast reception is marginal with the use of a basic indoor antenna and may require something beyond the included telescoping antenna. Either a roof antenna or a passive indoor antenna such as the Terk HDTVi are good choices. Even though amplified antennae typically yield better reception, I suggest you don’t buy one for your hurricane supplies. If the power is out, you are out of luck.

2009 Nissan Maxima luxury sport sedan has all-new identity Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS The all-new 2009 Nissan Maxima is the seventh generation of the luxury sport sedan and it just may be the best one yet. The Maxima rides on Nissan’s popular D Platform, the same FWD underpinning that was introduced with the hot-selling Altima. However, the chassis has been “enhanced” with the use of aluminum suspension links, revised suspension, new technology shocks, a lower engine mounting and a new Xtronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), all of which contribute to minimal torque steer and much better handling As for design, the new Maxima no longer resembles its sibling Altima, but does look a lot like Nissan’s new GT-R super sports car. It has a short nose and deck, a long sloping roof, deeply sculpted fenders and a wider front and rear track. Wraparound upturned headlights and a wide grille combine with a large bumper

opening and a bulging hood. The design flows through deep-waisted rear fenders and into a high trunk lid. New L-shaped LED taillights with side marker bulbs accent the rear. The sporty look is accented further by 18-inch (or available 19-inch) aluminum alloy wheels and low-profile performance tires. The new Maxima is available in two models, the 3.5 S and 3.5 SV, both powered by an enhanced 3.5-liter VQ-series 290-hp V-6 engine (19/26 mpg). The revised engine has a modular design with microfinished crank journals and cam lobes, molybdenum coated lightweight pistons, a resin intake collector, digital knock control, six individual coils (one per spark plug) and a cross-flow coolant pattern. It also has a Continuously Variable Valve Timing Control System (CVTCS), a variable induction system, a silent timing chain and an electronically controlled throttle. It all adds up to more horsepower and torque for quicker acceleration. The 3.5 SV models add leatherappointed sport seats, an advanced Bose premium audio system with nine speakers, HomeLink, fog lights and outside mirrors with turn signal indicators. Several option packages are offered,

including the Sport Package with sporttuned suspension, 19-inch wheels, rear spoiler, High Intensity Discharge (HID) Xenon headlights, heated outside mirrors with reverse tilt-down features, automatic entry/exit system with two-driver memory, heated front seats and steering wheel, paddle shifters, metallic link trim, Bluetooth, Satellite Radio and premium leather-appointed seats. The Premium Package includes a dualpanel moonroof with rear roof window and front and rear power retractable sunshades, heated outside mirrors with reverse tilt-down features, automatic entry/exit system with two-driver memo-

ry, heated front seats and steering wheel, paddle shifters, premium leather-appointed seats, eucalyptus wood-tone trim, 7.0inch color monitor and rearview monitor. This new 2009 Nissan Maxima should compete very well in a class that includes the Chrysler 300, Cadillac CTS, Acura TL, Infiniti G35 and Toyota Avalon. Base price is $29,290 on the 3.5S and $31,900 on the 3.5SV.
