Citations threatening 72nd Ave. businesses BY RICHARD YAGER ore than 50 small business owners located in an industrial park area off SW 72nd Avenue are appealing to Miami-Dade County Commissioner Carlos A. Gimenez to help solve what he termed “the most complex issue I faced in five years on the Commission. Throughout an IU-2 (industrial-zoned) area south of Bird Road (SW 40th Street) are dozens of small business establishments — including antique shops, crafters of glassware and woven art as well as a potpourri of furniture and specialty galleries, including “the place where I bought a baby’s crib some 20 years ago,” Gimenez recalled. That’s where retailers (many who lease from unit owners) have run afoul of current building codes and fire department regulations. These discrepancies are threatening closures and caused the District 7 commissioner to confer with business people on Dec. 3 at Glades Middle School. “All the good shutting down my business will do is put three families out of work amidst the worst economic times we’ve seen in years,” said business owner Nancy Albert. Warehouse units in the area north of SW 48th Street, which added mezzanine flooring to increase interior space, violate county zoning requiring a business to use not more than 15 percent of its total occupied space for retail purposes. Frustrated business owners appealed to Commissioner Gimenez after several were cited by Martiza Cedano, Fire Department code enforcement officer,

Fast becoming America’s “Third Place,” Beef ‘O’ Brady’s has found a new home in Kendall. Beef ‘O’ Brady’s — a new “community partner” forging close relationships with local schools, sports teams and other organizations — has opened its doors at 10201 Hammocks Blvd., No. 137. Owner Marleny Glomb has brought a family-friendly element to the traditional sports pub concept with multiple TVs, arcade games and a casual dining experience.

BY RICHARD YAGER “kid who grew up in Kendall” is more than excited about Miami Metrozoo’s new “Amazon and Beyond.” Opening of the $50 million exhibit “has been a fantastic experience” for Cindy Castelblanco, public relations manager of Metrozoo, even after seeing it through most of four years of planning and two years of construction. “Everyone who comes here really loves and comments about the diversity of its displays, from the spotted

jaguar ‘Palenque’ to a 300-pound anaconda who just arrived last week,” she said amid last minute preparations for the public opening on Dec. 6. Under Castelblanco’s guidance, members of the press and VIPs got an early look at the new exhibit, roaming displays and observing wildlife in three major areas highlighting Amazon eco-systems, including a make-believe Cloud Forest with misty sprays where giant hummingbirds fly. BY ROBERT HAMILON With Hanukkah approaching, Bet Breira School in Kendall received an unforgettable gift of 20 new computers from the Miami law firm of Bilzin Sumberg Baena Price & Axelrod LLP. “Improving the learning environments for young people in our community has always been a central aspect of our philanthropic mission at Bilzin Sumberg,” said John Sumberg, the firm’s managing partner. “We also understand the important role that technology plays in a child’s education, and that keeping computer systems current can be a heavy burden to many schools. We are donating these computers as another way in which our

firm hopes to affect positive change in the south Florida community,” Sumberg added. “We are delighted and grateful to receive such a generous gift,” said Dr. Francine Hamel, the school’s director. “With the new computers up and running in our computer lab, Bet Breira students have a wonderful opportunity to further enhance their skills using state-of-the-art computer equipment.” Bet Breira School is a Reform Jewish Day School, with students in kindergarten through fifth grade. The preschool at Bet Breira is for children ages 15 month through pre-kindergarten. The school is located at 9400 SW 87 Ave. For more information about Bet Breira School, call 305-595-3008.

the Giants” and the “Atlantic Forest,” introduce newcomers to howler monkeys, giant river otters, a clan of young Orinoco crocodiles, rare tree frog species and oversized fish such as a three-foot paco, swimming in a 50,000gallon aquarium. It is the first such tank to be built at Metrozoo. Special touches to delight kids and adults alike are the realistic miniature hatching crocodile eggs (with live sound) and a pint-sized glassed-in viewing area so kids can watch the crocodiles swim. Tropical flora lovers can examine more than 21,000 plants, surrounded by lush plantings of ginger, kapok, cassia and other rare trees. For Castelblanco, acquainting the public and press about about Metrozoo’s newest exhibit “has been a dream job come true. I always loved animals and hoped some day to be able to work with them.” Now married and living in Coconut Grove, the Lourdes Academy (Class of 1997) graduate studied communications at Florida International University, earning both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees before joining and “seasoning” with two public relations firms. “When I heard of the opening at the zoo, I couldn’t wait to apply for it,” she said. “Earlier, I thought about becoming a vet but just couldn’t hack the medicals, so this couldn’t have turned out

better for me. “I just love it here because you get to work in such a great environment, too,” added Castelblanco who serves as the zoo’s secondary bilingual spokesperson to communications director Ron Magill. She also edits and writes the monthly Toucan Talk newsletter and liaisons with local and national print and broadcast media, among her marketing responsibilities. Her only regret in moving from Kendall where she lived since age 5: “I couldn’t take my beagle, Lucy, with me, so she stayed at my former home with my parents (Sylvia and Manuel Castelblanco, residents off SW 120th Street).” “Yes, Global Amazonia and the Brazilian press came here for the previews,” she added, even while finding time to give Family magazine publisher Janet Jupiter of South Miami a special first-hand tour of the exhibit during preview week. Miami Metrozoo houses more than 1,200 wild animals and, located on 740 acres with over 80 major exhibit areas, is the only subtropical zoo in the U.S. Located at 12400 SW 152 St., Miami Metrozoo is open every day of the year, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with adult admission of $15.95; children, $11.95; special year-around resident, Miami-Dade employee and group visitor rates. due to “life-safety” issues uncovered during inspections of existing mezzanine construction. Cedeno explained that adoption in 2001 of a National Fire Protection Association code modified storage use of mezzanine areas with added regulations for stairways and handrails, as well as standards that conform to existing Building Department codes not covered by permitting when the warehouses were built more than 35 years ago. Asked “who blew the whistle on this,” Charles Danger. Miam-Dade Building Department director, said, “It all came about when someone applied for a retail license for a vacant unit there. When denied on the basis of the 15 percent retail use, the applicant hired an attorney to find out why existing businesses were permitted to exist. That’s when building issues surfaced on top of the fire safety code non-compliance.” A Comprehensive Development Master Plan amendment as a first step to permit extended retail uses or change the IU-2 zoning “can involve months even

without knowing the outcome $500 daily fines for already-issued fire code violations will involve,” noted Ralph Gilbert, county zoning inspections supervisor. Faced with the mélange of retail, wholesale and other uses created in relation to building and fire codes, Commissioner Gimenez concluded, “So many issues are involved. We have to first research the entire matter, beginning with the county attorney to see if we can forestall closures until a plan can be determined to answer the problems involved. “We can’t and won’t change what laws require,” Gimenez added. “But we will do everything legally possible to keep your doors open in the face of the multiple complexities that current codes necessarily involve for lease-holders and owners.” He promised a second meeting within 30 days to report on an initial investigation of forestalling citations and potential CDMP revision as a long-range solution, according to Reuben Arias, aide to the commissioner.

Citing the 1989 book The Great Good Place by Ray Oldenburg, Glomb has signed on for a “way of life” by opening “The Third Place” of Kendall. In the book, Oldenburg says people typically consider home as the “first” place in their lives, work as the “second,” followed by the “third” place where they go to enjoy a “playful” atmosphere that is less serious than the previous two environments. All of this fits what Beef ‘O’ Brady’s has become known for in nearly 250 communities nationwide. “The ‘Third Place’ is where people go to let loose among friends,” Glomb said. “Everything that Beef’s has been about over the past two decades has centered around community relationships and the neighborhood. “We’re the place for families, local sports groups and church organizations to meet. We’re the place people feel comfortable going to. That’s why Beef’s is a strong contender to become America’s ‘Third Place.’” Beef ‘O’ Brady’s of Kendall features large screen TVs, complemented by smaller screens strategically placed for viewing from anywhere in the restau-

rant. It also features interactive video games for children and a menu offering Buffalo wings, chicken fingers, salads, a variety of sandwiches and burgers as well as select desserts. “We plan to become an integral part of the Kendall community,” Glomb said. “Already, we have created ties with the community through sponsorship of local sporting organizations and we are eager to expand our involvement. Customers who come into our Beef ‘O’ Brady’s will immediately feel at home. Every Beef’s tells a story about their community, and we are no different.” Ironically, despite what its name implies, Beef ‘O’ Brady’s is best known for its Buffalo chicken wings. Originally, the chain’s menu featured beef and a variety of sandwiches. Later, founder Jim Mellody added his own recipe for Buffalo chicken wings, making the restaurant an even “hotter” place to eat. In fact, his sauce is bottled under a private label and sold on the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s website. For more information, visit online at <www.beefobradys.com>.

What will I-95 express lanes cost in safety? Michael Miller EXECUTIVE EDITOR

AROUND TOWN No one asked us but “express laning” northbound I-95 is one of the worst solutions to solve traffic gridlock at the expense of safety in Miami-Dade County. The crying need for speed at any cost will surely cause severe injuries or someone’s life, most likely an innocent driver and/or passengers in adjoining nonspeed lanes. How much time is ‘saved’ by an extra 10 miles-per-hour, anyway? And for what dire purpose? The continuing mindless public demand for raising speed limits on limited access expressways favors speeding instead of safety. It has become more important to see how fast a gas-guzzling SUV can go without a citation than (Lord help us!) be a few minutes late. Of course, our own speed limit formula causes most folks to brand us with ‘old fogey’ thinking: urban expressways limited to 50 miles per hour, suburban x-ways at 60 mph with 65-80 speeds permissible north of Yeehaw Junction. Experts can then spend their time determining urban-suburban boundaries instead of how many flashing signs and plastic posts to buy and maintain while Florida Highway Patrol reduces the trauma of pulling mangled bodies from wrecked cars. Between cellphone addicts, road

ragers and motorcycle racers, we’ve about had it with driving the city expressways, despite the MDX and Turnpike efforts to keep them safely driveable. You can’t legislate the lunatics who demand whatever speeds they think they can drive without risking a citation. “Express laning” only capitulates to the lunacy of making faster more preferable than safety, no matter what the price Bird Road ‘Rumbles’ Folks who have Bird Road as their Kendall ‘Main Street’ are getting their fill of headlines this year. Bird Road Steering Committee for improving the streetscape between the Palmetto X-way and Turnpike meets again December 10 to review rezoning plans (2-4 p.m. at West Dade Regional Library, 9445 Coral Way). Commissioner Javier Souto working with MDX officialdom to see what can be done to prevent the necessity of extra lanes at the Bird entrance to Tropical Park, making it difficult for seniors as well as dangerous for kids. The same Palmetto widening project has litigation threatened for Bird Road area north of 72nd Avenue area due to miscommunication over where buffers would be placed in the neighborhood as noise buffers. Now we’re advised that longtime taxpaying business folks in the ‘Antique and Craft District’ south of Bird are getting cited for fire hazards and non-compliance with building codes. Commissioner Carlos Gimenez has stepped up to try to find a solution to a

mixture of fire-building-and-zoning issues in what he described as a “chicken and egg” dilemma but as an ex-Fire Chief, who better to take on the job? As one of Kendall’s busiest commercial areas, equal to Kendall Drive, Bird Drive is now getting the attention it deserves to shape its future as a major county ‘corridor’ after so many years of just ‘growing like Topsy,’ as we used to say. Commissioner Katy Sorenson stepped in at the last minute as planning advanced for the Killian Library at S.W. 87th Avenue and Killian Parkway before the County Commission on December 4. Vacating the current zoning for estate building was necessary to permit the project’s go-ahead. Instead, the Commission voted to defer action to take a second look at alternatives to rezoning the area before building permits get issued. We’re advised that the HarumAlvarez family in southeast Kendall has “finally settled in” after an 18-month project by Enid and Albert H-A. to redesign and rebuild their digs in an older, tropical hammock area of Kendall off S.W. 98th Terrace. As Kendall’s unofficial historian, HarumAlvarez is justifiably proud of the ‘green’ features built into the new residence which has been praised for its environmental projects. A celebration with friends December 18 will mark the conclusion of 18 months’ construction. The many improvements can be seen at h t t p : / / g a l l e r y. m e . c o m / s m a l l co#100148. You can get a reduced admission of $3 per ticket to tour the new “Amazon

and Beyond” exhibit at Metrozoo that opened to the public on December 6. Just call the Zoological Society of Florida (305-255-5551) for information or visit www.zsf.org for additional details about a spectacular Disney-like transformation of zoo acreage into a Brazilian landscape, well worth the visit if only to see that handsome jaguar Palenque and a nearby nest of crocodiles, sharing the carefully-manicured landscape. Things are changing so quickly in Kendall, it’s hard to keep up with them. Unless you drive Kendall Drive regularly (with an eye to the landscape), you may have missed Michael’s Restaurant, converted from a Sunoco gas station, being taken down after barely a year’s existence at the Shula X-way.interchange west of S.W. 94th Avenue. And a Navarro Drug Store conversion of a familiar Discount Drug across the street, also shuttered. Then someone asks “Did you see that Spec’s Records” had vacated their store at Kendall and S.W. 117th Avenue? No, really, we hadn’t…but as Commissioner Sorenson pointed out, we do notice too many “For Let” placards in neighborhood shoppng center windows, all signs of current economic times. Thought for the Day: Common sense is instinct. Enough of it is genius. — George Bernard Shaw Richard Yager contributed to this column. Got any tips? Educational system makes it too easy not to learn R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY I received a call from a young student in her sophomore year at Miami Dade College who had a lot to say after reading last week’s column “Connecting Classes to Careers.” Her opening remarks were “Why don’t we just require students to stay in school until they graduate? And, enforce it!” The basic thrust of her conversation was that our school system makes it too easy for a student not to attend school. “Ever see those little roadside signs ‘GED in 60 days’?” GED, she reminded me stands for General Education Development. “It’s a cheap, quick substitute for a secondary education,” she explained. “You don’t learn much with the GED! And don’t let them tell you that getting a fast

Flu Vaccine Available

high school diploma over the Internet in an acceptable substitute for four years in classroom education.” “Why would an employer ever accept a GED when he is looking for an employee with a basic education?” I asked. “Just about everyone does. Public community colleges will even let you in with only a GED,” was her response. “Quit school on your 16th birthday, or for that matter just stop going to school whenever, and then go for a quickie GED and you can say you have completed high school,” she told me. “It just burns me up that I spent night after night cramming for exams so I could graduate with good grades only to find myself sitting next to a GED’er in my class at Miami Dade. You talk about schools motivating students!” She went on to say that “if you really want an education you can get one in a public high school. But you must really want it! Very few [schools] will motivate you to achieve. That’s the way it is. Run them through and get

VIEWPOINT on to the next kid!” Somehow we must figure out how to make a student want an education. We spend virtually no time with career awareness programs. Students are expected, I assume, to know what’s out there as far as earning a living is concerned. Our youth must be made aware of the benefit of attending a college or a tech school that will prepare them for far better paying jobs than working at a supermarket as a bagboy and hoping that something better may come along in the future. The young lady on the phone was thankful for the fact that her Cuban parents fought to come to the United States. Their drive to seek a better life for their children was the force behind their daughter’s desire for a high school

education and preparation for an undergraduate degree. The goal for this young lady is to keep earning good grades at Miami Dade, and then earn a scholarship to the University of Miami or FIU. She knows where she is going. She is family- and self-motivated. Many kids don’t have that benefit. Somehow we must find the way to keep our kids in school. We must create an atmosphere that motivates our children to see the long-term benefits of an education.

Task force established to combat illegal agricultural area dumping BY DIANA C. PEREZ The Miami-Dade County Commission on Dec. 2 approved a resolution sponsored by Commissioner Dennis C. Moss creating an Illegal Dumping in the Agricultural Area Task Force. “Illegal dumping in Miami-Dade County’s agricultural area is a serious issue that merits immediate attention,” said Commission chair-elect Moss. “The property owners in the agricultural area face an undue burden once illegal dumping occurs on the right-of-way adjacent to their farms, nurseries, groves and residences.” The task force will be comprised of impacted property owners and representatives from county departments, agencies, and organizations. I just received this email from a viewer and I thought I would pass it along: It asked, “Why did we bail out the banks, when all they have done is turned around and increased the credit card percentages to the max. My card went from a 12 percent to 29 percent just because I was a day late. Why doesn’t this government go after these banks? When I explained that I couldn’t afford to pay what they were asking, but I was willing to pay a certain amount, they stated that they could do nothing about it. “The coldness of these banks doesn’t merit them getting bailed out. That is why most customers just go into bankruptcy! It’s not that they don’t want to pay; it’s just that what they are asking, most people don’t even make in a week.” The message is probably similar to what you or a friend may be experiencing. During good times, the banks flooded us with credit card applications. And admittedly, we probably opened way too many credit card accounts than we should have. However, the banks probably sent out way too many applications than they should have. Overwhelming credit card debt doesn’t happen overnight and isn’t an accident. The banks are just as guilty for purveying loose credit standards to credit-addicted consumers who can’t stop ringing up more debt than they can afford. So why are the banks suddenly adding on all these extra charges… and why isn’t anything being done about it? First and foremost, the banks are losing billions of dollars because they loaned money to people they shouldn’t have. They’re looking to boost their earnings as much as possible and we’re the only ones they can hit with bigger bills. Second, the rules governing how credit cards are regulated are still in the banks’ favor. Consequently, consumers

aren’t getting much protection from local or federal regulations. Third, it wasn’t an accident that it all happened to begin with. The financial services industries are still spending lots of money lobbying Congress and state legislatures for the weakest rules possible to protect their bottom line. As you might imagine, very few highpaid lobbyists wine and dine Congress in order to promote tougher consumer protection laws. As a result, Congress basically has been ignoring most taxpayers. Instead, they’ve been concentrating on ways to better protect their campaign contributions. Congress held hearings earlier this year to overhaul the credit card industry. Lawmakers heard consumers’ pleas for help. The hearings resulted in a lot of demands for tighter consumer protection laws. Unfortunately, because of lobbying from the industry, coupled with record losses out of country’s biggest banks, nothing was done. All we got was a lot of talk, but no real action. As the new administration comes into office along with the new Congress, this issue may again be pushed to the back of the bus. There are a lot of bigger problems facing us all. But credit-challenged consumers need to be heard too. We need to remind our elected officials that credit card reform also needs to be a major priority. As President-elect Barack Obama suggested, “Let’s help Main Street, not just Wall Street.” Doing nothing just helps the banks keep their abusive practices that got us in this mess in the first place. One Final Thought: Banks are getting billions of public tax dollars in bailout funds, and they’re probably using much of the money lobbying Congress against stronger consumer protection laws. Why isn’t Congress or anyone else limiting exactly how our bailout dollars are being used? Are we getting hit with abusive credit card rates at the same time our tax dollars are being use to lobby against us? There’s certainly something wrong with that proposition.

Charity golf tournament to benefit autism groups BY LISSA TORRES The Fifth Annual Wicho’s on the Green Golf Tournament scheduled for Friday, Dec. 12, at Don Shula’s Golf Club, 7601 Miami Lakes Dr. (NW 154th Street), will benefit Carpe Diem Academia along with two important organizations — the Autism Society, Miami-Dade Chapter, and UM-NSU CARD (University of Miami and Nova Southeastern University Center for Autism & Related Disabilities). Registration and lunch are at 11 a.m. with tee-off at noon. Both benefiting organizations focus on helping children and families directly affected with autism, a lifelong neurological disorder, which is currently one of the most common developmental disorders in the world. Every year, not only does this charity golf tournament bring together community members interested in supporting a good cause, but it also creates awareness and offers education regarding the organizations it is highlighting.

Some of the ways which the tournament has to raise funds is by tee signs, running ads in the program and/or purchasing raffle tickets. Tee signs are $250 each and full-page ads for the program are $175. This year there will be a raffle to win a Smart Car; a limited number of raffle tickets are $200 and there is a one-in-150 chance of winning. Shopping event to raise funds for Liga Contra el Cancer BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD Maggie Maceiras and Georgette Hoyo are hoping enough people will want to mix shopping with the need to help those who suffer from cancer. The best friends are conducting a fundraising event titled “Shop for the Liga’s First Annual Holiday Bazaar” on Tuesday, Dec. 16, at the Coco Plum Women’s Club, 1375 Sunset Dr. “We are having 40 vendors and six artists,” Maceiras said.” It’s like a secret sale boutique.” The sale, which benefits Liga Contra el Cancer (League Against Cancer), will offer clothing, accessories, home goods, candles, and children’s gifts. “We have someone who will be having a wine tasting and someone with cigars,” she said. “There is something for everyone on your shopping list.” The event also will have a number of speakers who will give short talks while everyone shops. Those who attend can take part in a raffle with some great prizes. A portion of the proceeds from the vendors will be donated to the League. This is the second time organizers have put together this type of event. The first one, in October, was quite successful. “It was a lot of fun,” Maceiras said. “And more than anything, it was fun to see that it was so successful.” She said she went to sleep the night before the October event worrying that no one was going to attend. “At 8 a.m. we opened the doors and until 3 p.m. it was non-stop,” she said. “It was awesome.” It was so awesome that they raised $5,000. And the feedback from those who attended was such that they wanted to try again, but this time, instead of donating the funds to breast cancer research, they switched to the Liga Contra el Cancer (League Against Cancer). The vendors also were in favor of doing a second sale. “People wait to the last minute for Christmas shopping,” Maceiras said. “It’s for a great cause. If you went once and you had a good time and it was a good experience, you’ll tell your friends.” They chose La Liga because they

could see the direct results of how the money is spent. “Everything goes to the patient,” she said. “The League has a clinic. They take patients who have no other recourse. They check everything to make sure you qualify. They give them chemo.” While she has nothing against giving money to research, she and her friend decided on supporting the Liga because it is a local organization. “We feel the money is going to help someone,” she said. “We’ve seen family members go through cancer. We feel it would be better to help the family directly. Cancer is such an unforgiving disease.” Maceiras said the clinic goes through $75,000 in medications each Wednesday, when they do the chemo. “This year they’ve seen a tremendous decrease in donations,” she said. “People who would donate $10,000 are giving $4,000.” The sale will start at 8 a.m. and run to 7:30 p.m. Raffle tickets will be available for $1 each. Volunteers walk, run to benefit S. Florida Transplant Community BY INGRID VEGA Avid walkers and runners laced up their sneakers on Sunday, Nov. 16, in an outreach effort to educate the community about the importance of organ donation with Transplant Foundation’s third annual 5K Miracle Walk/Run at Miami’s Metrozoo. More than 700 participants from across the county, including 25 transplant recipients, joined forces to take this special walk on the wild side “Miracle Walk/Run this year fulfilled our mission to the transplant community in what has been our biggest turnout yet,” said Melissa ChediakWetzel, special events manager for the Transplant Foundation. “Funds raised from this event benefit the local transplant community by providing education, research and assisting patients in financial need,” Since it’s inception in 1987 the Transplant Foundation has brightened the lives of more than 5,000 transplant patients and families by granting special requests that help ease many of the burdens associated with the transplantation process. CBS 4 Morning/Noon News anchor and Miami native Cynthia Demos kicked off the walk alongside Melissa Chediak-Wetzel. Participants enjoyed a healthy breakfast provided by Whole Foods; welcome greetings from Miami-Dade District 9 Commissioner Dennis Moss and District 12 Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz as well as free massages stations sponsored by Keiser University. In addition the Florida Panther Ice Dancers were present to cheer the run-

Her son, Brenner Logan, 3, a liver transplant recipient, cheered his mom while she crossed the finish line in 24 minutes. “I am greatly appreciative of the Transplant Foundation,” Kristen Logan said. “Our lives were forever changed when this journey began and on the day my son received his gift of life. We all have to do what we can to help out this great cause and assist those families during the transplant experience.” 2008 Miracle Walk sponsors included SeaDream Yacht Club, Remedy Intelligent Staffing, Roche Pharmaceuticals, Perry Ellis International, BioScrip Pharmacy, Walgreens Co., Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, Dan Goldstein PA, Chroniscript Pharmacy, Bank of Miami, Keiser University, Whole Foods, Popeye’s Chicken, Carvel, Cookies by Design, European Corner, and Ragaman Power Drink. Volkswagen CC blends sports car with sedan Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS Volkswagen has hit a home run with the all-new CC; it’s an outstanding automobile that should solidify VW’s new position as the world’s third largest automobile manufacturer behind GM and Toyota. The new CC — formerly the Passat — is a nice blend of sports car dynamics and the comfort of a sedan, sleekly designed in a very sophisticated package. We liked what we saw from the moment we set eyes on the car, even more so after taking it for a highway spin. Aesthetically, the CC is a beautiful car. It has a bold face with a large VW logo and a cross-strut chrome grille, rides on 17- or 18-inch multi-spoke wheels (there are four designs to choose from) and has a dramatic roofline that sweeps to the rear, with frameless doors and flowing lines. The mid-level beltline visually connects the front wheel wells to the taillights.

On the inside, there’s a sophisticated four-passenger interior, with four ergonomically formed sport seats positioned to sit low and offer strong lateral support. The split folding rear seats are separated by a center roll-top fold-down console. A leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter are standard, as are chrome finished dials and brushed aluminum trim on the Luxury and both VR6 models. As for power, there’s a choice of an inline four cylinder or a V-6. The Sport and Luxury models come with VW’s 2.0T turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine with an intercooler and double overhead camshafts. The advanced four-valve per cylinder powerplant also is equipped with variable valve timing and a direct-injection fuel delivery system, both of which contribute to optimum fuel efficiency. Mated with either a six-speed manual (Sport only) or six-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic, the 2.0T delivers 200 hp and 207 pounds-feet of torque. It clocks 0-60 mph in a respectable 6.9 seconds with the manual gearbox (21/31 mpg) and 7.4 seconds with the automatic (19/29 mpg). For even more power, the VR6 Sport

Volkswagen CC has a sleek design with a cross-strut chrome grille, frameless doors and a midlevel beltline that connects the front wheel wells to the taillights.

and VR6 4Motion models come with a 24valve 3.6-liter DOHC V-6 — a refined version of Volkswagen’s famous narrow-angle engine with cylinder banks that create a “V” angle of just 10.6 degrees resulting in a more compact powerplant. This engine also has variable valve timing, variable intake lengths and direct-injection technologies, and is mated to a six-speed automatic with Tiptronic and delivers 280 hp and 265 pounds-feet of torque. It clocks 0-

60 mph in 6.6-seconds and gets 18 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. Base price on the Volkswagen CC with the 2.0T and a manual transmission is $26,790.

Kids Party raises $300K to aid diabetes research BY NATASHA NORRIS More than 1,000 local children and adults enjoyed an “Around the World” adventure on Nov. 23, without even leaving Miami. Kids Party for a Cure, presented by the Lexi Bayview Residences and Amy and Scott Greenwald, offered food, entertainment and activities from each of eight featured regions of the globe. The fun-filled evening at the Hilton Miami Downtown raised nearly $300,000 for the cure-focused research underway at the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI). according to co-chairs Barbara and Dennis Amoils, David and Carol Walker and the Greenwalds. “Once again, I am awestruck with the generosity of the volunteers, committee members, and donors, along with the capabilities of the DRI Foundation special events team,” said David Walker, who also was a longtime chair for Feast Among the Grapes, another event that benefited the DRI. “Having the kids there made it feel so much more important to me,” he added. “As a diabetic, with the potential for my children to contract the disease, I was much more acutely aware of the generational impact that we are facing. The DRI certainly is the Best Hope for a Cure.” Upon arrival, “travelers” received a passport, which was stamped at the entrance to each destination. Cuddly lemurs, kinkajous (honey bears), wallabies (small kangaroos) and marmoset monkeys, provided by Safari Edventures, welcomed guests as they entered Africa to the beat of tribal drums. Hula dancers lured them into Hawaii, where colorful leis and frozen “mocktails” were plentiful. Moving on to USA’s mainland, the rodeo took first place for many chil-

dren, who may have had more fun falling off the mechanical bulls than staying on them. In Australia, robo-surfing offered similar thrills. The scent from an enormous pan of paella encouraged guests to enter the Latin Quarter, and to reach the pyramids of ancient Egypt, the brave walked a tightrope over the Nile River. In Asia, a pagoda provided backdrop to the hilarious scene of children sumo-wrestling in huge body suits. European cafés in France and Italy offered a place for families to rest and recharge for another lap around the action-packed venue. Some of the delicious food were provided by: Five Guys Burgers & Fries, Exquisite Catering By Robert, Donut Divas, Chef David Schwadron Catering & Event Design, Papa Johns, Salad Creations, CrepeMaker, Tania’s Table, Perricone’s Marketplace and Café, Lyon & Lyon, The Produce Connection, and Jennifer’s Homemade. Adult thirsts were quenched by wines courtesy of Cupcake Vineyard and specialty drinks courtesy of Tommy Bahama Rum and Tequila Milagro. Additionally, 40 strolling entertainers from ABC Circus constantly circulated, amazing kids with magic, balloon art, stilt walking, juggling, and much more. The tunes of DJ Irie kept guests moving, as they tried to imitate the steps of a myriad international dancers. On-stage performers included martial artists, contortionists, acrobats and fire-eaters. A high-flying aerialist attracted eyes to the ceiling, and face painting, airbrush tattoos and hair beading brought attentions back down to earth. When the clock struck 7 p.m., a Mardi Gras style conga line of performers

The Diabetes Research Institute, a center of excellence at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, is a recognized world leader in cure-focused research. Since its inception in the early 1970s, the DRI has made significant contributions to the field of diabetes research, pioneering many of the techniques used in islet transplantation. From innovations in islet isolation and transplant procedures to advances in cell biology and immunology, the DRI is now harnessing the power of emerging technologies to develop new cell-based therapies to restore insulin production. For the millions of families already affected by diabetes who are looking to the world of science for answers, the Diabetes Research Institute is the best hope for a cure.

Cook It Like A Native! will tempt your tastebuds and features beautiful color photography, taken by awardwinning photographer Robin Hill, of the historic sites the Villagers have helped to restore or preserve through grant funding. Some new restorations included are Pinecrest Gardens entrance cottage to the (former) Parrot Jungle and the Mini Train located at Virginia Beach on Key Biscayne. The book includes more than 200 recipes contributed by Villagers members who come from every section of Miami-Dade County. The recipes

Pictured (l-r) are Villagers Cookbook Committee chairs Kendra Brennan, Lisa Chaffin and Kathleen Slesnick Kauffman.

include appetizers, salads, breads, pastas, entrees and desserts. All the proceeds for sales of the cookbook will go towards the organization’s mission for restoration of Dade County’s historic sites and scholarships to students who are entering the field of historic preservation. The Cookbook Committee chairs —

Kathleen Slesnick Kauffman of South Miami, Kendra Brennan of Coconut Grove, and Lisa Chaffin of Pinecrest — and committee members have worked diligently to create this Miami heirloom cookbook as a keepsake of the “Past for the Future.” For more information, send email to <info@thevillagers.org>.

Natalia Woodsworth of Starbucks Coffee Company (left) passes out Starbucks gift cards during the Tree Lot Takeover on Dec. 1. Starbucks purchased 200 Christmas trees from the Boys & Girls Club Hank Klein Center in Coconut Grove and gave them to the first 200 families to arrive at the tree lot. This event launched Starbucks Holiday initiative, “12 Days of Cheer, which is a series of random acts of kindness at various spots in the South Florida community. The Tree Lot Takeover made the season a little brighter for the free tree recipients, and the addition of complimentary hot chocolate, a performance by the Arts and Minds High School Christmas Choir and a surprise visit from Santa Claus turned the event into a celebration that truly kicked off the holiday season.

This Holiday Season, Dolphin Mall presents its second annual Pet Nights. Pet owners are invited to bring their cats and dogs to visit with Santa on Wednesday evenings from 7:30 to 9 p.m. on Dec. 10 and 17 at “The Snow Globes Featuring The Polar Express” located second floor Ramblas. Visitors can choose from the same stateof-the art digital photographs offered during the traditional photos with Santa. New this year, Shutterfly, the Internetbased social expression and personal publishing service, is providing an innovative digital photo option. Customers who purchase one of the deluxe photo packages will receive their pictures on a portable, reusable 128 MB flash drive along with a $25 Shutterfly “Create-It Card,” so they can easily turn their photos

into unique gifts like photo books, greeting cards and prints. Pet owners will receive a free bowl with the purchase of a photo package, while supplies last. Pets must be up-to-date on their shots and must either be on a leash or carried in a lightweight, portable pet carrier with harness. For heart attacks, time is muscle. Balloon Angioplasty 101 with Dan Krauthamer, M.D.

W

hen you were a kid, a doctor might have given you a balloon for braving a scary procedure. Now, we’ve found a different way to use balloons, and it could save your life. “To restore blood flow to the heart muscles after a heart attack and prevent damage, interventional cardiologists perform balloon angioplasty with coronary stenting. A small tube is inserted into the blocked blood vessel, and a tiny balloon and stent are used to open the vessel and restore blood flow. The sooner the procedure is performed, the more heart muscle can be saved. “The American Heart Association recommends angioplasty for heart attack patients within 90 minutes of arrival in the emergency room to prevent permanent damage to the heart. Physicians at South Miami’s Heart Attack Unit are available 24/7, and perform angioplasty consistently under 60 minutes. That’s good news for you and your heart.” — Dan Krauthamer, M.D. Board-certified interventional cardiologist
