Miami Beach Convention Center set to turn profit for 2012

lobal Spectrum, facility managers of both the Miami Beach Convention Center (MBCC) and the Colony Theatre, is reporting that the MBCC is estimating to end their 2012 Fiscal Year with a final net profit. Final numbers are still being put together but the MBCC estimates a Net Profit of $100,000 against Total Gross Revenues of $18.6 million for the 2012 Fiscal Year, which ran from October 1st, 2011 through September 30th, 2012. A comparative look at those top line numbers reveals significant increases in gross revenue and decreases in total expense over what was budgeted. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––

As I sit at my desk and write my first message, I am truly humbled by the warm welcome I received at the installation last week and so thankful for the incredible opportunity to serve as Chairman of the Board of the best Chamber in the World. It gives me such great pleasure to serve not only this 91 year old organization but also this great community. And I am so excited to have this outlet to communicate with you. Rest assured that I am committed to the ongoing improvement and enhancement of benefits and services to the membership of the MBCC and the community as a whole. How sweet it is to be a part of the greatest chamber in the world (did I say that already?)…the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce. Serving the past 8 years on the Executive Board of Governors has taught me so many real life lessons. I have made the greatest relationships that I could have ever asked for and I have learned so much from them. I have witnessed true leadership advance the mission of this Chamber and it gives me great pleasure to have been part of such success. I am so proud to have worked closely with such visionaries like our Past Chairs Jason Loeb and Aaron Perry. Their ethics, integrity and commitment will be an everlasting impact to our Chamber and community. LEADERSHIP SPOTLIGHT MARIA CHANG MAYER For nearly 20 years, Miami Beach has been home to Maria Chang Mayer. It’s the birthplace of her three daughters (two attend North Beach Elementary and the other, Temple Beth Sholom). Simply stated, Miami Beach has it all for Mayer — high-quality and diverse people who are interesting, talented, and caring, and a real sense of community for her family. Mayer, who moved to South Florida from El Salvador when she was 11, even worked her first paying job in South Florida. As a student at Miami Jackson Senior High School, Mayer’s first job was working as a cashier at Publix during high school summer break. She left the area only to attend college, and, little did she know at the time, to meet her future husband, Emanuel, while studying abroad in Aix-enProvence, France. She graduated with a degree in English from the University of Florida and continued her studies at UF’s Fredric G. Levin College of Law, where she received her J.D., with honors. Although Mayer is a practicing corporate attorney — she’s been with the law firm Carlton Fields since 2007 — she finds herself working in the capacity of a trusted business advisor to her clients, helping them find practicable solutions, and most importantly, helping them make their business dreams come true. “My clients have big ideas and I enjoy guiding them in pursuit of meeting their business goals.” Mayer’s genuine drive to excel in her profession is shared with her work and commitment to the Miami Beach community. “I look up to people who have been involved in our community for decades and who have done so retaining their good name and integrity.” As a Miami Beach leader, Mayer continuously invests her time in the community. Most recently, she was elected to the Board of Directors of the SoBe Institute of Arts, after participating in programs with her children and exuding a natural desire to help children have access to the arts. Music is a big part of the Mayer household — her children

play a variety of instruments and her husband is a seasoned musician. In 2009, she was a candidate for the Miami Beach City Commission. She is a graduate of the City of Miami Beach Leadership Academy and currently serves on the Transportation and Parking Committee for the City of Miami Beach. Her involvement with the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce has been gradually increasing — first as a Pillar member, then as a member of the Chamber’s Pillar Board of Directors and now as a member of the Chamber’s Board of Governors and a member of the Chamber’s Advocacy Committee. Mayer also currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Jewish National Fund, Miami-Dade region. The City of Miami Beach and the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce offer Mayer and her family opportunities they might not otherwise have, including meeting high-quality people from all walks of life who share the same passion and commitment to the betterment of the Miami Beach community. “You only live once,” Mayer said. “To live and work in a community that truly cares offers those who want to make a difference a unique opportunity and I’m fortunate to be a part of the fabric of this community.”

PUTNEY, from page 1 ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Putney expressed his enthusiasm for the vice-presidential debates by saying, “It was excellent, and if I had a choice to watch the debate or Monday Night Football, I would choose the debate.” Putney continued by discussing the presidential candidates, and commented that President Obama recently spoke at the University of Miami, where he was in very good form, engaging and aggressive. However, he should have been more aggressive when 70 million Americans were watching the first of three presidential debates when compared to his opponent, Mitt Romney, ‘who was on his game” as Putney put it during the debate. Currently, Romney is up by 7 points in the state of Florida. “We as a community are so lucky to have Michael Putney providing us with the true facts and what is really going on in local, state, national and worldwide politics.” Said Chairman Alan Lips, Gerson, Preston, Robinson & Company, P.A. “His integrity, honesty and moral character set an example for the media community globally. I always look forward with excitement to hear what Michael has to say on all issues! And what an incredible and unbiased education you can get from him with so few words!” Putney highlighted a recent poll by the Wall Street Journal which concluded that 11% of American’s were not firmly committed to one candidate over another. He informed the business leaders at the Chamber’s Breakfast that this year’s ballot is 12 pages, as a result of the full length versions of the constitutional amendments that will appear on November 6th. Putney recommended that residents should vote via absentee ballot to avoid the long lines and have sufficient time to deliberate on the longer ballot issues. “We were more than pleased to have Michael Putney as our Keynote Speaker”
said Pillar Board Chairman, David Sacks, Esq. of Pathman Lewis, LLP. “Michael’s brings a depth of political expertise to the South Florida Community truly providing us with a well informed electorate. He is South Florida’s version of the late Tim Russert and I always count on his reports to be the most credible and balanced – we were lucky to have him speak to our Chamber.” Putney noted the other political races for the Senate seat between Senator Bill Nelson and Connie Mac, and Congressional races for the District 23 seat between Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Karen Harrington, along with District 26 seat between Congressman David Rivera and Joe Garcia. He also shared his views on the political environment in Miami Beach with the search for a new City Manager and the renovations of the Miami Beach Convention Center, along with the $1.2 billion bond issue for the public school system. “Michael Putney shared a variety of views on the national and local political scene that were received exceptionally well by the diverse crowd at the Chamber’s Pillar Breakfast” said Jerry Libbin, President & CEO of the Miami Beach Chamber. Putney recognized his good friends in the crowd such as Chairman Alan A. Lips, Senior Vice Chair Aaron Perry and Senator Gwen Margolis, who was the first woman president of the Florida Senate. “For a period in my life, I lived on Pine tree Drive” said Michael Putney during his closing remarks. “I have fond feelings for Miami Beach, it’s a great community because of the people in it and because of its Chamber of Commerce.” The event sponsored by TD Bank, attracted over 100 Miami Beach Pillar Trustee Members, which make up the highest tier of membership for the organization, to support Michael Putney’s speech.

As is the case with the vast majority of Convention Centers across the country, the MBCC had forecasted a Net Loss of $990,000. This included budgeted net revenue of $6.9 million against expense forecasted at $7.89 million accounting for the budgeted net loss. The MBCC’s actual gross revenue topped the forecasted revenue by $400,000 while reducing the budgeted total expense by $690,000. “The financial numbers we are seeing as we close out our year are the result of the hard work of so many in this community”, said GM Bob Balsam. “Our Global Spectrum team, in close partnership with the City of Miami Beach, the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau and along with the many Chambers, Associations and local organizations all contributed in ending our year by reaching a very uncommon and extremely exciting final result.” Convention Centers are typically facilities that project a loss but ultimately result in a positive economic impact through creating major revenues in the surrounding community for everyone from major hotels and restaurants down to the many smaller family-owned local businesses. “We are proud to represent the City of Miami Beach as facility managers of the MBCC” said Balsam. “We look forward to

In October, the MBCC hosts in two major city-wide conventions that will create a tremendous amount of economic impact for the City of Miami Beach and MiamiDade County as a whole. The Association for Financial Professionals Annual Conference visits the MBCC from October 14-17th, featuring many distinguished speakers, 125 educational sessions and over 250 exhibitors. The following week, the MBCC hosts yet another city-wide event with Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics’ Annual Conference from October 22 – 26th, an event that will bring together medical professionals from all over the world. “We’re delighted to be kicking off the new fiscal year in October with two major conventions at the Miami Beach Convention Center,” says William D. Two-day, 170 mile Trans-Florida 3County Ride Seeks to Add to $1.6 mil. Raised for Sylvester in Past Two Years
The Miami Dolphins announced that the third annual Dolphins Cycling Challenge (DCC), a two-day, 170-mile trans-Florida charity cycling event to benefit Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, will take place on November 3-4, 2012. This major community initiative is a collaborative effort between the Miami Dolphins and the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, with proceeds going to directly to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. “Steve Ross and the Miami Dolphins are thrilled to be a part of this cornerstone philanthropic initiative for a third consecutive year,” said Dolphins CEO Mike Dee. “South Florida is a world-class community deserving of a world-class cancer center. We hope Sylvester can continue growing its footprint and positively impacting those in our community who face the challenges associated with this insidious disease.” The Dolphins Cycling Challenge is a tricounty charity cycling event founded by the Dolphins to increase cancer awareness, encourage healthy hobbies, and raise funds for UM’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, which has facilities in Miami, Kendall, and Deerfield Beach. In its second year, the DCC was an enormous success, attracting more than 800 riders and raising more than $1,070,000 for cancer research

Jarrard Goodwin, M.D., Chief Medical Officer of Sylvester and co-leader of “Team Sylvester,” said it “was a very special experience to ride with so many of my colleagues and patients through the three counties where Sylvester has a strong presence. I know the moral and financial support of our patients and friends will motivate us again this year.” Joining Team Sylvester in 2012 is the
newly appointed Director of Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, Stephen D. Nimer, M.D., who is eager to take part in the signature community fundraising event for the cancer center. “We work in teams at Sylvester to find new therapies and bring hope to patients and families. The Dolphins Cycling Challenge,” said Nimer, “similarly brings teams together to work toward our common goal: fighting cancer.” Michael Mandich, whose father and Dolphins great Jim “Mad Dog” Mandich was treated at Sylvester, has been a vocal supporter of the DCC since its inception and rode the full 170 miles last year, work-
ing with the DCC to unveil the “88 Mad Dog Lane Water Stop” in honor of his father. “The DCC is near and dear to the Mandich Family, especially to my father. The inclusion of the 88 Mad Dog Lane Water Stop cements his imprint on this event, which has limitless potential for the South Florida community.” On the first day of the ride, entrants will have three options: (1) a 100-mile-long “Century Ride” from Sun Life Stadium to West Palm Beach, during which cyclists will travel through the City of Miami over the MacArthur Causeway to Miami Beach and then up Ocean Drive/AIA to enjoy an end-of-the-ride celebration at CityPlace; (2) a Miami ride starting at Sun Life Stadium that gives riders the opportunity to take in 30 miles of South Florida scenery before ending up back at the Miami Beach Marina; and (3) a 30-mile Palm Beach Loop that provides riders with the greatest vistas West Palm Beach has to offer. The second day features two unique routes, both of which give riders the opportunity to traverse a secured portion of I-595 before entering Sun Life Stadium: (1) a 70mile ride from CityPlace in West Palm Beach to Sun Life Stadium; and (2) a 30mile ride from Ft. Lauderdale to Sun Life Stadium. All Day 2 riders will enter Sun Life Stadium through the players’ tunnel and join an on-field Finish Line Celebration. For child and pre-teen riders, Dolphins Cycling Challenge will offer various courses set-up on the grounds of Sun Life Stadium.

ABOUT THE SYLVESTER COMPREHENSIVE CANCER CENTER Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine opened in 1992 to provide comprehensive cancer services and today serves as the hub for cancerrelated research, diagnosis, and treatment at UHealth—University of Miami Health System. Sylvester handles 1,300 inpatient admissions annually, performs more than 2,400 surgical procedures, and treats more than 4,400 new cancer patients. All Sylvester cancer specialists are on the faculty of the Miller School of Medicine, South Florida’s only academic medical center. In addition, Sylvester physicians and scientists are engaged in approximately 200 clinical trials and receive $55 million annually in research grants. Gaming Questions BY ISADORE HAVENICK
There is one very specific question on the ballot in Palm Beach and Lee County at this u p c o m i n g November election. In Palm Beach voters will be asked to decide if slot machines should be allowed at the Palm Beach Kennel Club. In Lee County voters will decide if slot machines should be permitted at the Naples-Ft. Myers Dog Track. In both instances voters know that slot machines will be limited to only these specific facilities, and in both instances the passage of the measure does not guarantee installation of the machines. In fact the Florida Attorney
General has opined that the results are essentially meaningless, and it would take an act of the Florida Legislature to allow for gaming at either one of the two facilities in question. This raises two interesting points. First of all if voters decide an issue, shouldn’t that be a mandate to follow the wishes of the people? If voters want slots at a specific location in Palm Beach or Lee County then install them. Conversely, if the people vote against the machines then honor their request. Is it not the job of the legislature to implement the will of the people? Secondly how would the voters on Miami Beach react to a measure that specifically details exactly where slot machines can be installed and restricts their presence to only this location? Some day we might find out.

EV Charging Station now available on Miami Beach Electric vehicle (EV) charging has arrived in Miami Beach! EV owners can now charge their cars at the City of Miami Beach’s parking garage located at 1301 Collins Avenue. Four EV dedicated parking spaces are available there and are the first EV charging stations open to the public on Miami Beach; however, the Fontainebleau Miami Beach has a charging station available for hotel visitors driving electric vehicles. Miami Beach is a city that’s serious about sustainability, introducing a city-wide car sharing service back in January and other environmental and energy saving initiatives over the last few years. Hertz on Demand car sharing, pay-as-yougo service offers an economical, convenient and socially conscious alternative to car ownership. Residents and tourists alike can sign up online and reserve cars which can be picked up from one of Hertz On Demand’s conveniently located hubs. Miami Beach was the first city in Florida to introduce a car sharing program. DECOBIKE is the City’s bike sharing and rental program, encouraging visitors and residents to explore Miami Beach via bike. This green mode of transportation allows riders to
check out and return available bikes from stations located thorough Miami Beach. Both hourly rentals and membership programs are available. In addition to the bike and car sharing programs, the city offers a Hybrid/Low emission vehicle incentive program for vehicles with an EPA Smartway rating of 6 or greater, as well as street legal electric vehicles, and mandatory citywide recycling. The City is putting its money where its mouth is, investing in a citywide energy audit with partner Ameresco to identify green practices that will save the City money in the long run. A geo-thermal chiller system is already underway to provide energy-efficient service to City buildings. In addition, the City’s approach to new projects includes sustainable initiatives, such as the use of saltwater-tolerant paspalum sod on the City’s world-class golf courses, and ensuring that the tennis courts at the Flamingo Park Tennis Center use the latest in eco-friendly technology. The new Fast-Dry courts will decrease water conservation by 50% on an annual basis by using a patented advance subsurface irrigation system instead of the traditional system currently in place.

Chalk Ping Pong & Billiards Lounge presents PINK PONG, an October benefit for Breast Cancer Awareness On Friday, October 5th, Chalk Ping Pong & Billiards launched, PINK PONG, the first of a series of October events benefiting various Breast Cancer Organizations. South Florida women work to raise awareness of Rett Syndrome

UPDATES ON THE SEARCH FOR MEDICAL MIRACLES The history of medicine can be seen in people working hand-inhand with scientists to raise awareness on the search for medical miracles, so here are some latest dispatches from the front. Although I’ve been a health writer for nearly two decades now, I must confess I was ignorant about Rett Syndrome, that is until I met Gisel Gonzalez, of Miami, and learned about her sweet little girl Gia. Although Gia appeared normal at birth, as she grew, her development slowed and Gisel, or Gigi, as she is known, began searching for

an explanation. Doctors gave her several, but when Gia was three-and-a-half, she learned the truth; her beloved baby had been born with Rett syndrome. Rett is a dreaded diagnosis. This rare neurological disorder is seen only in girls because boy babies who inherit it do not survive. But survival is not necessarily a blessing; girls with Rett syndrome fail to develop in almost every meaningful way; they can’t talk, and they lack muscle tone and, hence, motor skills. They may also develop seizures, uncoordinated breathing and social anxiety. It is a devastating diagnosis, but Gigi and her sister, Teri Rios, of Fort Lauderdale, are not giving up home. Instead, they are forming a nonprofit organization called “God’s Innocent Angels,” to raise awareness of Rett Syndrome and ultimately build a center to help other families. On Oct. 13, they held a lavish Circus-based fundraiser at Briza on the Bay, but their efforts continue year around, so visit their web page, Gods Innocent Angels, at www.godsinnocentangels.org, where you’ll also find a link for more information on Rett syndrome. LOOKING FOR CURES FOR PARALYSIS Speaking of medical miracles, those that come from the laboratory can be amazing, and today came news that the Nobel Prize for Medicine has gone to two scientists whose work are enabling researchers to “turn back time,” and fashion new cells to help cure disease. As the Wall Street journal put it, “The ability to pull off this trick-the biological equivalent of turning back time-ranks as one of the more head-spinning feats of modern science.” No one is happier to hear this news than our own Sabrina Cohen, who just

2013 Chrysler 300 SRT8 is for drivers who want excitement Grant Miller Car Corner The 2013 Chrysler 300 SRT8 is one good looking car. Everywhere I went during my week of test-driving the car, people asked me what it was all about. With its aggressive styling and glossy black wheels, this sedan simply demands attention. The Chrysler 300 SRT8 sedan is targeted at customers that want excitement, but don’t want to sacrifice comfort and innovative features usually found on a luxury car. With head turning designs inside and out, the 300 SRT8 has an excellent combination of luxury, power and handling. Performance numbers include 0-60 mph acceleration in the high four-second range; quarter mile in high 12-second range; 0-1000 mph in less than 16 seconds, top speed of 175 mph and stopping power from 60-0 mph in 120 feet. Under the hood of the 2013 Chrysler 300 SRT8, the 6.4-liter HEMI V-8 delivers 470 hp and 470 pounds-feet of torque. The high torque output delivers incredible standing
starts and straight-line performance, while performance-tuned motor mounts improve idle stability and ride control at any speed. An active intake manifold and high-lift camshaft with cam phasing provides maximum lowend torque while optimizing high-end power. On the highway, up to 23 mpg is achieved by use of an active valve exhaust system that allows the standard Fuel Saver Technology (four-cylinder mode) to engage over a wide rpm range. The active exhaust system also allows for straight-through mid and rear mufflers for a throaty exhaust note under engine load. The five-speed automatic transmission is controlled through standard steering wheelmounted paddle shifters or the center-console mounted Auto Stick, allowing for a choice of shifting on both the road and the racetrack. Both methods give drivers the ability to manually select specific gears on the transmission. New for 2013 is an improved adaptive damping suspension (ADS) system that is expanded to three modes and tuned specifically for the Chrysler 300 SRT8 to offer a comfortable ride on the street, yet easily switched to handle on-track conditions. In “Auto” mode, a wide range of on-road and driver inputs – such as vehicle speed, steering angle, steering speed, brake torque, throttle position and longitudinal/lateral/vertical

accelerations – automatically tune the suspension for specific conditions. In “Sport” mode, the damping system rebound and compression is locked to a higher damping rate. Drivers can easily choose between settings with a press of a button on the center stack to quickly change the shock damping characteristics from “Auto” for everyday commuting to “Sport” for more spirited driving situations. In “Track” mode, the higher damping rates
combine with a performance shifting and gear holding feature that allows the driver full shift control when using the steering wheel mounted paddle controls or AutoStick. Taken 2: A Review
Liam Neeson and his particular set of skills are back in ‘Taken 2’ ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– BY LAUREN COHEN
To say that “Taken 2” it’s “more of the same” would be a gross understatement. Carbon copy is more like it. But then, there are quite a few differences between “Taken 2” and its predecessor. While Taken was far-fetched, it boasted the considerable claim of having turned the then 56-year-old Liam Neeson into an action star seemingly overnight. Taken 2, however, relies solely on our love of Neeson to carry it every single step of the way. Instead of being labeled as just far-fetched, this sequel falls into the realm of absurdity. There couldn’t possibly be more plot holes, or a more glaring lack of logic throughout. What made the first so good was that it took a simple storyline, and totally got the audience on board; we never stopped feeling the urgency of the situation. Now, I still don’t buy that Bryan (Liam Neeson) would have ever, ever found his daughter in the Albanian sex ring she was kidnapped into. Not in a million years. But hey, that’s why we go to the movies, right? It’s pure escapism. In the case of “Taken,” it’s escapism that resulted in a truly stellar and memorable action flick. But when it comes to “Taken 2,” it’ll take some strong suspension of disbelief to get you on board – but surprisingly, if you’re a big enough fan of the original (and really, who else is seeing this but fans?), and you go in expecting the train wreck that this absolutely should be – I daresay you’ll come out of it rather entertained. “Taken 2” opens with a funeral; the mass funeral for some of the Albanians that Bryan
killed while searching for his daughter, to be exact. And now the families of the deceased want revenge. No matter that those men were kidnapping and selling women into sex slavery; their families are mourning and they want Bryan to feel their pain. Cut back to Los Angeles. Now Bryan and his family are trying to get on with their lives. Kim (Maggie Grace) has a boyfriend and is working on finally getting her driver’s license. Kim’s mom, Lenore (Famke Janssen), is now separated from her second husband; and Bryan – well, he still has those particular set of skills, and he’s not afraid to use them. In an attempt to try and put their painful past behind them, Kim and Lenore join Bryan on a trip to Istanbul, where those seeking vengeance are waiting for them. Even the most oblivious person could tell you that there’s absolutely no reason for “Taken 2” to exist. The plot is a mess, the dialogue is laughable, and Neeson never looks nearly as roughed up as he should considering what he’s been through…but really, it’s almost so bad it’s good. Watching Bryan call his daughter while multiple guns are being pointed at him – just to have him make another phone call that reminds everyone of their favorite scene from the first movie – and to have him utter the line: “Your mother and I…are going to be taken” (come on, you know they were just itching to force that title word in there!), is actually some nonsensical, silly fun. Throw in watching Kim jump from rooftop to rooftop while throwing grenades — and when a movie is as brazenly, in-your-face preposterous as that…can you really hate it as much as you probably should? Mount Sinai Heart Institute to transmit live coronary intervention case at international conference

TCT is the world’s largest educational meeting specializing in interventional cardiovascular medicine. Mount Sinai Medical Center will broadcast a complex coronary intervention procedure in front of an international audience at this year’s Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) conference, which will be held for the first time ever in Miami Beach, Florida. Mount Sinai’s case will be one of 20 transmissions, broadcast in highdefinition, from around the world that will be featured at the medical conference. TCT 2012 is the annual Scientific Symposium of the Cardiovascular Research Foundation and co-sponsored by the American College of Cardiology. This has never been more important as cardiovascular disease remains one of the most significant health risks for people around the world. Now in its 24th year, TCT brings state-ofthe-art techniques and training to interventional cardiologists around the world. In addition to research presentations, TCT selects the top centers in the world to broadcast live cases, which provide a step-by-step approach to basic and advanced interventions, as well as new techniques to improve care for patients with cardiovascular disease. Dr. Nirat Beohar, Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at the Mount
Sinai Heart Institute, will be performing a complex interventional coronary procedure for the live broadcast. Dr. Beohar has devoted his career to the use and development of catheter-based therapies for the treatment of heart disease. He has extensive expertise in performing multivessel coronary interventions that generally require coronary bypass, even for calcified left main coronary disease, and treats “holes in the heart” without open surgery. He is also among a select group of physicians experienced in utilizing transradial percutaneous coronary intervention to open obstructed coronary arteries. In this procedure, he accesses the heart through a small incision in the wrist, rather than using the traditional means of reaching the heart through the femoral artery located near the groin. “Our goal is to take care of each patient in the safest and least traumatic way that will provide the most durable and best results,” Dr. Beohar explains. Advancements in the area of interventional cardiology can be lifesaving, such as in the event of a heart attack. Celebrating 100 years of the Collins Canal The Collins Canal Centennial Celebration on Saturday November 3rd, marks 100 years since the opening of the Collins Canal. The all-day family event is hosted by the Miami Design Preservation League, Collins Park Neighborhood Association, the City of Miami Beach and SOBE Arts and is taking place at The Bandshell on 2100 Washington Ave. In case of rain, the event will move to the 21st street recreation center next door. The celebration begins at 10 a.m. and ends about 6:30 p.m. It features musical performances, food trucks, various activities for children, and historic walking tours of the Collins Canal and Collins Park neighborhood provided by the Miami Design Preservation League. Miami Beach pioneer John Collins created the canal in 1912 in order to move his avocado crops across Miami Beach since it was not connected to mainland then. Keeping with the theme of the canal’s history, a class on growing and maintaining avocado trees is being taught in the Miami Beach Botanical Garden at 10 a.m. that day. City Commissioner Jorge Exposito is also presenting a proclamation commemorating 100 years of history. Attendees are encouraged to dress in period costume and arrive in canoes, kayaks and paddleboards. They are discouraged, however, to enter the canal with motorized boats. “The canal really got Miami Beach started,” said Carolyn Klepser, freelance historic researcher who is assisting in the planning of the upcoming event. This is the first of several 100-year celebrations
that the city of Miami Beach is preparing, including the City’s 100th birthday in 2015. The all-day event is free for all attendees. Artist Herbert Hofer created the Collins Canal poster. Miami Ad School students Lindsey Mills and Jesse Abbott created flyers for the event.
