Annual Meeting 2013: A Successful Year Review & More to Come BY DANIEL WHALEN

n October 17, 2013, the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce celebrated its Annual Meeting, held at the beautiful Fontainebleau Miami Beach, a landmark of our beloved community and primary sponsor of the event as a long-time Chamber member. Hundreds of members came together to celebrate the Chamber’s accomplishments and welcome new members and leaders featuring City National Bank, a corporate emeritus member of the Chamber, as the presenting sponsor of the event. The guests enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres before

Chairman Alan Lips addressed the crowd, presenting a slideshow of the past year’s accomplishments as well as the events for the coming year. Headline events to come include an expanded Gala at the Fontainebleau and the 2nd Annual Sports Weekend. The takeaway from this year’s presentation was clear; the past year has been filled with success, yet the coming year promises to be even better! The Chamber’s Annual Meeting provides a unique opportunity for members to share their success and growth of the previous year and connect with the possibility of new business prospects. Furthermore, the incoming Board of Governors and Pillar Board members are installed and sworn in at the Annual Meeting. Following

Alan Lips’ remarks, Dori Foster-Morales, Esq., an attorney at Foster-Morales Sockel-Stone Law firm, led the incoming board members in reciting their oath of office. Chairman of the Board, Alan Lips, has one more year of service, however, DeAnne Connolly Graham, President of ROI Media Consultants, Inc., was sworn in as the incoming Chair of the Pillar Board of Trustees. The evening continued with a performance by the talented vocalist, Mary Figueroa, of Miami Beach Senior High School. Guests were slow to leave as they enjoyed the productive networking, delicious food and complimentary drinks, graciously provided by the sponsor, the Fontainebleau Miami Beach. Congratulations to the Chamber for a successful year!

Letter from the Chair BY ALAN A. LIPS

There is no better place in the world to be right now than in Miami Beach. Our city has so much to offer from fun in the sun, beautiful beaches, the greatest hotels, fantastic dining, outstanding shopping, to the most impressive arts and culture community. Why would anyone go anywhere else? And we are so blessed to have what I believe is truly the greatest chamber in the world. I have been so fortunate to serve as your chair for the year and it has been an incredible experience, both professionally and personally. I have made so many meaningful relationships from my involvement in our dynamic chamber for so many years and it never stops Now, in my leadership role, I am so proud of the Chamber’s accomplishments. Outside of providing great service to our membership and creating the best environment for the magic to happen, we continue to grow, produce more opportunities and give so much back to our great community. At the end of the day, it is all about community. Each year with our success we have been able to expand funding to our Miami Beach Chamber Education Foundation which provides greater support year after year to the city for the International Baccalaureate program. On top of that, with the support of our Executive Board, the chamber won the Aetna Voices for Health competition for $30,000, financial support of the program by the affected municipal-

nificance of international buyers in the market. This year’s theme, “Selling Miami to the World – The Diverse Faces of Today’s Buyers,” focused on the future of Miami’s buyers. The boom in the South Florida real estate market, in combination with the slowing economies in Latin America, has pushed the local real estate community to look towards the future of Miami as a “global city” and ask where the new wave of buyers will come from. “The Real Estate Luncheon was a huge success that brought the entire South Florida real estate community together to discuss the future of our city,” said Madeleine Romanello, broker-associate at ONE Sotheby’s International Realty and immediate Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce Real Estate Council Past Chair. “I am excited to be a part of this young city that is filled with great architecture and lifestyle, and is rapidly expanding into a global international player.” The panel discussion highlighted the

growth in diversity of international buyers as well as the affect it will have on how the real estate industry designs, builds and markets properties in Miami. The panel included local real estate experts: Borges + Associates’ President and CEO, Reinaldo Borges; Miami-Dade County’s Chief Economist, Dr. Robert Cruz; Miami Association of Realtors’ Senior Vice President of Public Relations and International, Lynda Fernandez; and Condo Vultures Realty LLC’s Owner and Broker, Peter Zalewski. The panel discussion and Q&A was moderated by CBS4 anchor Rick Folbaum. Following the luncheon, McKafka Development Group hosted a special brokers meeting on their new project, The Crimson-Waterfront Residences. As Miami’s real estate community continues to grow and attract diverse buyers, the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce’s Real Estate Council looks forward to celebrating even more accomplishments at next year’s Real Estate Luncheon.

South Beach Happenings Now is the Time for South Beach South Beach, Miami has a lot to offer year-round. Strong Latin American roots paired with European sophistication make South Beach exotic and unique. Add a splash of classic Art Deco architecture, a fabulous historic district and a thriving art scene and you have a recipe for deliciousness that would appeal to anyone’s tastes. If you’ve always wanted to check out South Beach, then this is the time to see it at its best. Balmy temperatures combined with exciting events make October the time to see the real South Beach. In October, the Hess Select South Beach Seafood Festival featured an all-day eating event. For a mere $25 you can taste signature seafood dishes from 10 different chefs. Dishes included stone crab, paella, seafood chowder, lobster ravioli, tuna, shrimp, octopus, oysters, mussels, squid and scallops. Add a refreshing cocktail and you’ve found the perfect way to spend a day in South Beach. October also features the 56th year of Oktoberfest in Miami. Not only is this the longest continuous running Oktoberfest in North America, it is also one of the most entertaining. German culture, music, dancing, food and, of course, beer are all part of the fun during the last two weekends of October. When you celebrate in South Beach there’s no need to drive. South Beach boasts a walking score of 88, a transit score off 99 and a bike score of 85. Once you visit the area you’ll want to live here. Contact Sandra at www.SandrasTeam.com to access her team of Miami real estate experts. Yet another reason to contemplate life in Miami is the boom in the condominium market. The price range for Miami Beach condominiums continues to hold at impressive highs due to the flood of foreign and domestic investment. Developers like Matteo Cornali are feeding the frenzy for condos by converting apartments into Italian Masterpieces like Essenza in South Beach at 1410 Euclid. Another gem is the condo located in the Flamingo-Lummus at 740 Meridian, West Ave 1419. Call Sandra at 305-877-4453 for a viewing or more information. She can help you uncover those hidden gems for you while

the market is still affordable. Miami’s core is alive and well too. The Brickell CityCentre project will be adding an 80-story, mixed-used tower to phase one, already under construction. This massive project already includes a luxury shopping center, two residential towers, a hotel, apartments, offices and a wellness center. The fact that investors are pouring their money into Miami confirms that now’s the time to buy here. If you’re looking for something upscale, you missed the sale of the landmark sale of the famed Versace Mansion. The Ocean Drive estate, officially dubbed Casa Casuarina, fetched $41.5 million at auction, beating out Donald Trump in the process. The mansion has 10 bedrooms, 11 bathrooms and an observatory. The new owners are expected to operate the mansion as a hotel and don’t worry – there are plenty of other palaces still left to buy. The $outh Florida Gaming Report Entertainment Options BY ISADORE HAVENICK

There are so many entertainment options for us here in South Florida. Here is a short list of musical performers slated to be in town over the next two months: • Bret Michaels • Cheap Trick • Lynyrd Skynyrd • Exposé • Three Dog Night • Kansas • Sammy Hagar • Cyndi Lauper • John Fogerty • Alice Cooper

What do all these performers have in common? There are a litany of possible answers, but I’m sure the one I was searching for might have eluded most of you. All the performers listed above will be appearing at a local casino, specifically either The Hard Rock or The Magic City Casino. For those of us growing up in the ’70s and ’80s certain acts define us and without these casino stages we would have no way to relive our high school and college memories. These performers have seen a career rebirth due to the growing number of casinos springing up around the country hungry for entertainment that fits the demands of the baby boomer generation. While the gaming issue will continue to be hotly debated over the coming months, don’t dismiss the great ancillary entertainment it sends our way.

Four generations of physicians at Mount Sinai Mount Sinai Medical Center is proud to have four generations of doctors from the same family who collectively have practiced at the hospital for more than half a century. The late Dr. Jonas Unger began practicing at Mount Sinai when it was located in the old Nautilus Hotel and paved the way for three generations of surgeons that would follow his son, Dr. Harold Unger; grandson, Dr. Stephen Unger; and great grandson, Dr. Joshua Unger. “The Unger family has made a tremendous contribution to Mount Sinai, virtually since its inception,” said Steven D. Sonenreich, president and CEO of Mount Sinai. “Each generation in this family has chosen to pursue a career in medicine at Mount Sinai – and our patients are the true beneficiaries of their decision.” After graduating from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York, Harold began his practice of general surgery at Mount Sinai in 1955 – just six years after the hospital opened its doors in 1949. Shortly after his arrival, Harold helped initiate Mount Sinai’s vascular surgery program, a milestone in the hospital’s history. “This phase of my career was most exciting because we were doing procedures never done at Mount Sinai before,” he said. Harold also was performing a number of radical and partial mastectomies at a time when breast augmentation surgery was becoming popular. It occurred to him that it would make sense to try doing a breast implant at the same time as the mastectomy, sparing the patient physical disfigurement. As such, doctors performed Mount Sinai’s first immediate reconstruction surgery – a procedure commonly practiced today. In 1982, Harold’s son, Stephen, joined the family practice and went on to be named chair of the department of surgery in 2009. Stephen helped establish minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery at Mount Sinai in 1989,

and he was active in setting up a series of training programs to teach the technique to other surgeons in the community. He was one of the first surgeons at Mount Sinai to perform numerous laparoscopic procedures, including gallbladder removal, the treatment of bile duct stones and the placement of peritoneal dialysis catheters. In addition, Stephen has a special interest in increasing the efficiency of dialysis. He has spent the last 15 years developing new approaches to creating and preserving arteriovenous fistulas that maximize the amount of blood cleansed during dialysis treatments. Continuing the family’s legacy, Stephen’s son, Joshua, joined Stephen’s practice in August 2013, becoming the third generation in the Unger family to practice surgery at Mount Sinai and the fourth generation of Unger physicians at the medical center. “I am very proud of the tradition established by my great-grandfather and my grandfather when he opened his practice at Mount Sinai in 1955,” Joshua said. “I hope to continue what I perceive to be the practice’s ultimate dedication to patient care and the highest standards of professional and surgical excellence.” Like his father, Joshua graduated from Duke University Medical School, where he completed a comprehensive fellowship in vascular surgery. His surgical interests include carotid disease, advanced hemodialysis access, advanced lower extremity bypass, endovascular treatment of aneurysms and peripheral arterial disease. Reflecting on this latest development in the Unger family tree, Stephen said, “I now understand the pride that my father felt when I joined his practice in 1982.” For more information on the surgical practice of Drs. Stephen and Joshua Unger, and their associate Dr. Jennifer Davies, call 305674-CARE (2273) or visit www.msmc.com.

Dr. Harold Unger (seated), with his son, Dr. Stephen Unger (right), and grandson, Dr. Joshua Unger. Harold Unger’s father, the late Dr. Jonas Unger, was the first physician in the Unger family to practice at Mount Sinai Medical Center and paved the way for three generations that would follow. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

2014 GMC Sierra is more aerodynamic and efficient Grant Miller CAR CORNER The all-new GMC Sierra may not be a groundbreaking new design, but it is an improvement on the beloved pickup truck. Engineers made changes in the handling — the steering is quicker and more accurate — and the new fuel-saving engine is virtually silent. In addition to the new exterior look, there are three all-new EcoTec3 engines to choose from, an updated cabin with available next-generation IntelliLink connectivity and many other features especially designed for truck owners. The 2014 Sierra has new aerodynamic measures that benefit fuel efficiency and reduce wind noise. Updated mirrors that reduce wind turbulence, triple-sealed inlaid doors, as well as roof and tailgate design features all help air to flow smoothly and quietly over the Sierra body. Updates to the pickup truck’s body and chassis are designed to improve ride and handling, comfort and capability. The fully

boxed frame uses high-strength steel and hydroforming to give it more strength and rigidity with less weight. New cab structures incorporate high-strength steel in the A-pillars, B-pillars, roof rails and rocker panels, while ultra-high-strength steel segments of the rocker panels provide added protection for shallow offset crashes. Sierra’s aluminum hood saves about 17 pounds, while to the rear a roll-formed box is stronger, lighter and more durable than a traditional stamped steel box. Sierra uses aluminum for some suspension components for additional rigidity and weight saving, and new lightweight wheels are paired with low-rolling-resistance tires. Sierra’s engine selection has been updated for 2014 with increased power, torque and fuel efficiency. New 4.3-liter 285 hp V-6, 5.3-liter 355 hp V-8 and 6.2-liter 420 hp V-8 powertrains are offered, all from a shared EcoTec3 engine family. Each engine has standard direct injection, continuously variable valve timing and Active Fuel Management, that seamlessly switches to four cylinders during light-load driving. All three engines use lightweight aluminum blocks and heads and are mated with durable six-speed automatic transmissions. A “cruise grade braking” feature down-shifts the transmission on downgrades to reduce brake wear. All V-8 models use new, larger

9.5- and 9.76-inch rear axles with the strength to accommodate the engines’ higher output. On the inside, Sierra’s all-new cabin has premium materials, attention to detail and purposeful technology. New soft-touch materials and available aluminum trim line an interior focused on usable and productive space. Sierra has an upright instrument panel designed for visibility and accessibility. Knobs and buttons are large, legible and within reach. All knobs are coated using a rubber-over-mold technology, so they’re easy to grip even through gloves.

A new instrument cluster on all models features six gauges with an available centrally located, 4.2-inch color Driver Information Center with vehicle status information, a trip computer and other information, such as radio and navigation. The MSRP on the 2014 GMC Sierra ranges from: $32,805 to $52,500. Grant Miller is the publisher of Community Newspapers. Giant Motors Auto Body & Paint closing doors after 60 years For more than 60 years, generations of Miami Beach residents have relied on GIANT MOTORS AUTO PAINT & BODY to repair everything from minor dings to major collision damage. On November 1, owner Richard May will close the shop’s doors for the last time. The late Dave May purchased Giant Motors Auto Body & Paint in the midfifties, looking to establish roots in Miami

Beach, as well as a legacy to pass on to his son. In 1980, twenty-five-year-old Richard May started working with his father, who retired ten years later. On January 5, 1998, Richard and his wife Marcelle, another Miami Beach native, bought the shop. Richard developed a thriving business by building strong ties to the community, paying close attention to detail, and providing excellent customer service. Through the years, he repaired cars for the children and grandchildren of some of his father’s original customers. When Giant Motors first opened, the neighborhood was filled with body shops, tow companies, small apartment units, and city vehicles. In the past few years, the Sunset Harbour area has become one of the hottest emerging neighborhoods in Dade County. Giant Motors is now surrounded by upscale shops, restaurants, salons, workout venues, and a city-owned public parking garage facility, which offers 460 parking spaces. Although Richard was not actively looking to sell, he was frequently approached by investors and developers that were interested in purchasing the property. He turned them all away, until

Harbour,” said Richard May. “It is bittersweet to close our doors after so many years. We are grateful to all of our customers who have been so loyal to Giant Motors.”

“MVP” will stand for Most Valuable Presenter when the 4th annual AT&T Young Stars Showcase presented by Northwestern Mutual/ Laser Financial Group wows the audience at the Aventura Arts and Cultural Center on Sunday, December 8. The super spectacular event coinciding with the Aventura Marketing Council’s gala 25th anniversary celebration will mark Northwestern Mutual/ Laser Financial Group’s “three-peat” philanthropic effort to help showcase the talent of sensational young singers destined to be future stars. Assuming a lead sponsorship role second years running highlights Northwestern Mutual/ Laser Financial Group’s commitment to community outreach initiatives – a goal cheered on by Jordan Laser, managing director of the Laser Financial Group with Northwestern Mutual in Aventura. Sharing “impressive stats,” Laser attributes the company’s success to the drive to

deliver superior financial value to clients. Northwestern Mutual, the nation’s largest direct provider of individual life insurance, has earned the industry’s best possible insurance and financial strength ratings from all four major rating agencies; has been recognized as the “World’s Most Admired” life insurance company in a

First Class Parking Meets Event Parking Needs As the humidity dies down and the rain tapers off, the weather in South Florida is unmatched. Miami Beach’s peak season is in full-swing, and this means one thing — events. Residents and tourists alike take advantage. For residents, a party at the family abode is a great way to celebrate the cooler weather. A successful home get-together requires consideration and planning for various elements. One of which that is often forgotten until it is too late for is parking. For residents in areas with limited parking, it is tempting to park along residential streets and “create” parking spaces as needed; however, this can lead to steep fines from the City of Miami Beach parking enforcement of sometimes more than $100 per vehicle in violation. First Class Parking has the solution to your parking woes. With years of experience focused exclusively on valet service, First Class Parking can provide parking solutions for any event — from relatively small home

events to major conventions. After all, they provide parking for the Miami Beach Convention Center, Art Basel, Lincoln Road, and various condominiums throughout South Florida. Don’t jeopardize your guests’ or clients’ vehicles with unreliable service providers or put them at risk for fines or towing with illegal parking. Parking regulations within the City of Miami Beach are complex, but First Class Parking’s knowledge of the code requirements allows them to provide the best, most economical solution to parking, all with the utmost professionalism and expediency. They are true to owner Jorge Zuluaga’s vision that parking should always be First Class. Annual event raises more than $375,000 for Go Red For Women Campaign Hundreds of community leaders celebrated women’s heart health at The Westin Beach Resort & Spa Fort Lauderdale on September 27th at the 8th Annual Go Red For Women Celebration, Luncheon, and Love Your Heart Workshops. With donations still coming in, over $375,000 has been raised for American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women movement, a campaign to raise awareness about heart disease, the No. 1 killer of women. This year, the campaign celebrated its 10th anniversary. Heart disease affects one in every three women across the United States. However, only one in five women believes that heart disease is her greatest health threat. “Since the inception of Go Red For Women, more than 627,000 women’s lives have been saved from cardiovascular diseases, that’s 330 lives saved per day,” said Gabrielle Finley-Hazle, CEO of Florida Medical Center and the event chair. “I am very pleased to have led the fundraising efforts this year knowing that the money raised will help fund research, education and community programs that will continue to benefit women all over the world.“ The celebration included educational workshops and an interactive boutique by local sponsors, followed by a heart-healthy lunch-

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission urges all users to lower their water heaters to 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

Although natural gas pipeline incidents are uncommon, these tips will help you identify a possible leak and know what to do.

Carbon Monoxide

LISTEN for a hissing or roaring sound near a natural gas appliance or line.

Incomplete combustion of any fuel – produces carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is poisonous and has no odor, taste or color. Carbon monoxide detectors are helpful, but they are no substitute for using equipment safely. This includes having it inspected once a year by a certified contractor.

Appliance Safety According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency: • It’s important that you have your furnace inspected by a qualified specialist. • Be sure all furnace controls and emergency shutoffs are in proper working condition. • Keep trash and other combustible material away from your air heating and water heating systems.

LOOK for blowing dirt or continued bubbling of standing water.

SMELL for the distinctive rotten-egg scent of natural gas. Take action if you detect even a small amount of this odor. LEAVE the area IMMEDIATELY if you detect a natural gas leak. Don’t try to identify the source or stop the leak. CALL Florida City Gas at 888.352.5325 or 911 once you are safely away from the possible leak site. Stay away from the area until a Florida City Gas representative or emergency personnel indicate it is safe to return. REMEMBER while near a possible natural gas leak, do not touch or use anything that may cause a spark. This includes lighters, matches, cigarettes, flashlights, light switches and telephones. Wait until you have left the area to use a cell phone. For more information, visit floridacitygas.com/safety or call 800.9937546.

Italian Designer Sportswear Line Opens First U.S. Store in Miami Beach The first U.S. outpost of internationally acclaimed Italian sportswear brand Aeronautica Militare has officially landed in South Beach. To celebrate the occasion, members of the Miami Beach and ItalianAmerican communities were transported to Italy during a Prosecco and espressoinfused reception on Friday, October 4th. Arriving guests were greeted by The Honorable Adolfo Barattolo, Consul General of Italy in Miami, and sprays of balloons in the ‘tricolors’ of red, green and white which were later removed revealing the Aeronautica Militare logo on the store’s 20-foot composed of riveted steel. The event was produced in association with the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce, the Italian Consulate in Miami, the Italian Trade Commission,

the Italy-American Chamber of Commerce Southeast and The Murry Agency. Aeronautica Militare, an Italian fashion line inspired by the heritage of the Italian Air Force, includes collections for men, women and children and showcases leatherwear, sportswear, outerwear and fashion accessories all featuring the authentic insignia of the Italian Air Force. The use of the insignia and that of the Italian Air Force’s acrobatic flying squadron, Frecce Tricolori, are made possible through an exclusive licensing agreement between the Italian government and Aeronautica Militare’s owner, Cristiano Sperotto.
