Belt-tightening, New Programs and Resources Mark School Year’s Start BY SUPERINTENDENT ALBERTO CARVALHO Miami-Dade County Public Schools
When state funding for a new school year falls drastically short, what’s a Florida school district to do? At Miami-Dade County Public Schools, we are mitigating a $60 million deficit by cutting spending and improving operations, even as we roll out a host of new resources and rigorous academic offerings for students. Not only are our revenues down—by $2.2 billion since 2007—but student enrollment is headed up, posing an all-too-familiar challenge: How to apportion shrinking resources to meet growing demands. Add the tough task of extending substantial learning gains amid shifting standards, and the challenge gets even tougher. The good news: M-DCPS students and staff are up to the challenge, as our track record proves. Student performance is up by several measures, and so are operational efficiencies. The not-so-good news: Our chances of extending these gains diminish with every funding shortfall. We’ve run a five-year marathon on shrinking fuel, and we’ve done it with astonishing skill and speed, but we’re getting closer and closer to hitting the wall. How do we break through?

LEADERSHIP SPOTLIGHT JUSTIN LEVY Florida’s youngest and most diligent entrepreneurs, Justin Levy is no stranger to success. His journey began in Coral Gables at the University of Miami. Levy graduated with three majors within the business school: entrepreneurship, management, and finance—taking a plethora of business classes. Levy did not only take advantage of the wide spectrum of business classes offered, but also sought involvement in the many business resources that UM makes available whether it be clubs, Business Fraternities, Toppel Career Center, the Launch Pad, and even networking with notable professors and other students. His commonly uttered words, “what you put in is what you get out” can be proven by his proactive mentality and his successive accomplishments. While in college, Levy started a number of companies, all using the knowledge he gained from classes and his naturally “business savvy” personality. Among his entrepreneurship ventures, Levy became involved in SEO, or Search Engine Optimization. This interest in internet marketing led to the creation of his rapidly growing, AffordableSEOs.com. The company, based in Miami Beach, FL, focuses on bringing new business through clients’ websites. The services provided include search engine optimization, social media management, pay-per click management, and full web design, building, and development. Levy’s primary objective is to build long lasting business relationships bundled with top quality service. By placing websites on top positions for keywords on Google and other major search engines, AffordableSEOs has positioned itself as one of the leaders in the industry. Although

their strongest client base is South Florida, the company has already grown into two national offices and one global office with more on the horizon. Justin Levy’s early enthusiasm regarding anything business-related was obvious, and the wide range of experience that he obtained in the business world has awarded him with the opportunity of being an active member in the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce. This membership blossomed into even further involvement and responsibility, including the position of Chairman of the Membership Committee and sitting on the Pillar Board of Trustees. Levy looks to be an active member of the Chamber for many years to come.

NEW PROGRAMS, from page 1 ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– of non-school departments – bringing the four-year reduction of central administration to 55% -- and an adoption of the state’s mandated virtual school expansion in senior high schools. At the same time, taxpayers will see a slightly lower tax rate. Increased property values, however, will nevertheless push up the tax bill for the typical homeowner. This budget is student-driven, the district’s workforce and operations timeand battle-tested, and our new initiatives forward-looking. All are targeted to continue promoting student performance and improving both effectiveness and efficiency.
MORE CHOICE, MORE RIGOR To boost the number, scope, and accessibility of our academic offerings, we are introducing 36 new magnet and other choice programs throughout the county this year, from a science, technology, engineering, and math academy at Ben Sheppard Elementary in Hialeah to cutting-edge iPrep academies at four high schools across the community. For more information, visit choice.dadeschools.net.
DIGITAL CONVERGENCE, DIGITAL CONVERSION As technologies and technological industries converge, we must prepare our students to keep up and get ahead. Toward that end, every M-DCPS high school starts this school year with Wi-Fi connectivity hot spots in all of our high schools. Pending approval for our federal e-rate applications, we plan to connect every school by 2013.

LEANER, SMARTER OPERATIONS We know what works. Whether tailoring instruction to meet each student’s needs and abilities, or maximizing operational effectiveness and efficiency, we’ve got the goods. This year we are capitalizing on our strengths as never before, by giving our top principals greater autonomy over their schools and by marketing our most innovative and successful academic programs and business practices to other schools and districts.
21ST CENTURY SCHOOLS Students today must be prepared to succeed in a world very different from the one that existed just 20 years ago. Therein lies perhaps our biggest challenge. With billions in capital-funding cuts, aging and crumbling buildings, a huge maintenance backlog, and technological advances as fast as our imaginations, how do we upgrade our school facilities to meet the urgent needs of our students now in the years ahead? We’re doing it by asking voters November 6th to authorize the issuance of $1.2 billion in general obligation bonds, taking advantage of a rare convergence of conditions—the retiring of the 1988 school bond issue, historically-low borrowing rates, and low construction costs— to give every student a safe, technologicallyadvanced, and comfortable learning environment for generations to come. I’ll be reaching out to business and community leaders in the weeks ahead on how to help us in this crucial endeavor. For more information in the meantime, visit bondsforschools.dadeschools.net.

to lead the organization into 2013. The 2012-2013 Board of Governors is comprised of individuals from a wide variety of businesses in South Florida and across the globe who are dedicated to bringing together local and regional business leaders to enhance business development, to nurture personal and professional relationships, to facilitate the exchange of commerce between members, and to preserve the rich heritage of the dynamic business community that exists in and around Miami and Miami Beach.

City National Bank Repeats its 5-Star Performance The stars continue to shine for City National Bank of Florida (CNB). The community bank, founded in Miami Beach in 1945, recently earned its second consecutive 5-star “superior” rating from Coral Gables-based bank ratings firm BauerFinancial. This is the highest rating Bauer bestows upon banks, and the rating keeps City National Bank on the “Recommended Institutions” list. CNB is one of only seven banks in Florida with over $1 billion in assets to receive the highest rating. And only two banks with assets over $4 billion, including CNB, earned five stars. “Strength and stability have always been trademarks of City National Bank since we first opened on Miami Beach. Maintaining our Superior rating continues to illustrate that,” President and Chief Executive Officer Jorge Gonzalez said. BauerFinancial has been rating the nation’s banks since 1983. The ratings firm utilizes a complex formula that factors in current and historical data to determine the strength of each bank. The rating was based on CNB’s second quarter performance. The bank reported net income of $10.3 million and core earnings of
$14.2 million, continuing a strong record of profitability and growth. Earnings reached $19.8 million while core earnings increased to $27.4 million for the first six months of 2012. CNB continued to increase its lending as loan commitments for the second quarter increased to $233 million from $221 million in the first quarter of 2012, bringing total loan commitments to $454 million. And the bank will keep lending. At current capital levels, City National Bank can support more than $1.5 billion of loan growth. “We are one of the best capitalized institutions in the state and we will continue to use that strength to power our growth for the remainder of 2012, especially in our commercial, real estate and mortgage lending,” Gonzalez said. The 5-star rating continues a banner year for CNB, the fifth-largest financial institution in the state. Earlier this year, the bank was highlighted for having no service complaints in a statewide study. CNB was also named the South Florida Business Journal’s Community Bank of the Year in 2011. The bank has 26 banking centers from Miami-Dade County to the greater Orlando area.

Art Live Fair 2012 — Highlights the ‘art’ in heart
Two of last year’s little fairgoers help make hope blossom –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
Art Live 2012 is a nonprofit, interactive, contemporary “art happening” and fair benefiting Lotus House Women’s Shelter in Miami. During Art Live (previously Wynwood Art Fair) performing artists and exhibitors alike step outside the four walls of their galleries, institutions, and studios to join us in an uplifting coming together of art and community for cause. An “art happening” is a fun, thoughtprovoking, interactive, creative art experience in which artists and fair goers come together to create works of art “live” and spontaneously. “I didn’t know art could be like this!” was the quote of an astonished participant last year. “It is truly breathtaking to watch and be a part of the art,” said another. We like to say - don’t just see art ~ Be It! Artists from Miami and around the county will collaborate to create interactive art performances and works of art that engage, educate, and invite your participa-
tion in extraordinary and exciting ways! This year’s fair will feature more than 50 artists creating works in all different forms of artistic medium. More than a fair, Art Live is a spontaneous “happening” of unprecedented artistic dimension and heart, bringing together contemporary artists and community to cause. Admission proceeds of the fair will benefit the Lotus House Women’s Shelter, providing shelter, sanctuary, education and resources to empower homeless women and children to build safe, secure lives off the streets. Join us in this very special coming together of art and community for cause and make a difference in the lives of women and children in need! The Venetian Islands — Miami Beach’s String of Gems BY ALEKSANDRA MARZEC
While it may be true that the Venetian Islands are technically “artificial” in that they were created by man and not Mother Nature, everyone agrees that the breathtaking waterfront beauty and quality of life here is very real. Idyllically set along the Venetian Causeway that connects the City of Miami to Miami Beach’s South Beach area, the Venetian Islands are comprised of Biscayne Island, San Marco Island, San Marino Island, Di Lido Island, Rivo Alto Island and Belle Isle, as you drive west to east. (There are actually 11 islands total, but only 6 are inhabited). While there were some truly impressive single-family estate properties on Belle Isle when it was first developed – retail pioneer J.C. Penney had a majestic home there – today it is home to some of the Beach area’s most impressive condominium buildings, including the beautiful Nine Island Avenue and Costa Brava. People also travel to Bell Isle from around the world to visit and stay at the world class Standard Hotel, a truly luxurious spa and resort located along the sparkling waters of Biscayne Bay on the north shore of Belle Isle. The other islands are comprised primarily of single-family homes, with a mix of stately, original early Florida architecture and stunning new residential masterpieces. The islands were created to offer residents there some of the most impressive water views in all of South Florida, and the easy access to the open waters of the Atlantic makes it a perfect spot for boaters and fisherman to call home. Originally connected by a wooden bridge, the current Venetian Causeway began construction in 1925, and is currently undergoing a complete refurbishment. Not only does
it provide quick access between Miami’s downtown and the City of Miami Beach, the toll road is also a popular route for joggers, cyclists or those just taking the family dog for a beautiful waterside stroll. The Venetians now represent some of the most desirable and hottest real estate properties in the area, thanks to the availability of condominiums from around $300,000 and up, and truly affordable waterfront homes starting at around $2 million. Here you’ll find everything from a small, 1930’s-era Mediterranean bungalow to a stunning 10,000+ square foot contemporary work of architectural art. The Venetian Islands are home to an eclectic array of residents, including young families, business executives and entrepreneurs, affluent retirees and even worldrenowned celebrities. But the appeal of these waterfront gems to all who live here remains the neighborhood feel that one may not find in other parts of the area. And with the convenience of venues like the American Airlines Arena and Adrienne Arsht Performing Arts Center just off the western tip of the Causeway, to the cosmopolitan class of Miami Beach’s Lincoln Road Mall on the east side, Venetian Isle residents are fortunate to have the best of all worlds just outside their doors. Some have called the Venetian Islands Miami’s best kept secret, as it has generally fallen under the radar of some of this area’s more famous, or infamous in some cases, islands like Star Island and Fisher Island just to the south. And for those who call the Venetians home and others who are looking closely at the prospect of living there, that suits them just fine. Additionally, in July 2012, a Visa Waiver P rogram (VWP) working group was formed to expedite legislation. Now that the working group is established, the two countries can begin to negotiate the various security agreements that must be signed in order to advance Brazil’s entry into VWP. The Department of State will continue to welcome Brazilian visitors by opening new consulates, improving facilities and increasing consular staffing. For the latest updates, visit www.USTravel.org. The visually impaired strike up some fun! Disability Access Committee chairperson David New led a night of fun as the City of Miami Beach Parks & Recreation kicked off its new “Bowling Nights” program for the visually impaired. September 14, 2012 marked the beginning of new fun and excitement for the Department’s Special Populations program. Bowling for this group will take place every second Friday of the month from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Scott Rakow Youth Center, located at 2700 Sheridan Avenue, through December 2012. Participants from the City’s Special Population program as well as members from the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and the “Guild for the Blind” were assisted by the City’s Special Olympics Athletes and the North Shore Margaret M. Swett Social Club members, a group of high functioning developmentally disable adults. Program participants not only had a chance to better their bowling skills, but an opportunity to socialize and have a good time. Bowling ramps were also available for participants who needed a little more assistance to enjoy the game. Nobody cared about high scores, all they knew is that they were having fun and sharing a special time among friends. It was so rewarding to see them enjoy themselves?,
David New and his assistant Allison Slakman –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Fine Art Gallery comes to South of Fifth The Williams McCall Gallery is the first fine art gallery located in the trendy South of Fifth neighborhood and has become a “must visit” destination for art lovers and collectors. The stylishly minimalist gallery represents a diverse roster of local and international artists creating contemporary paintings, works on paper, fine art photography, encaustic collage and assemblage. There is a remarkable selection of Florida-centric work that includes local painter Madeliene Abling who uses her palette knife to create exciting imagery of boats and adult beverages; prominent landscape artist John Dowd who unveils a new body of work entitled In Florida”; and representational oil painter Joan Cobb Marsh who offers several stunning series of Florida including the Port of Miami and the South Pointe Park. Sports artist and former Boston Globe illustrator Larry Johnson who works can be found in the private collections of Oprah Winfrey and Vernon Jordan offers original acrylic paintings of Miami Heat players LeBron James and Dwyane Wade. Other artists include Cuban landscape painter Enrique Flores-Galbis whose current series of paintings grew out of his visit to Cuba after a thirty-five year absence. The resulting collision of memory and fact found its expression in the paintings of Havana streets with their sun struck, salt bit facades buttressed by the resonant, steadfast shadows; National Geographic photographer David Evans who finds hidden beauty in otherworldly landscapes as he often travels the globe with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; and Ernie Bynum, a renowned colorist, who paints images that relate to his past in a way that creates mystery and intrigue. The gallery also represents works by Marty Ittner who creates collages using layers of wax and paper with fragments of ephemera. Not to be missed are the original mono prints of printmaker Taka Maruno whose abstract etchings reflect his early years in suburban Tokyo and the assemblages of sculptor Mike Wright who constructs her pieces from found painted wood. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– See

Launches curated Art Fair with Omar Lopez-Chahoud as inaugural 2012 Creative Director
New York based curator, Omar LopezChahoud, has been appointed as Creative Director of the inaugural edition of UNTITLED. Launching in Miami December 5-9, 2012, UNTITLED. is a curated art fair that will host a focused selection of approximately 50 international galleries whose exhibiting artists will be chosen in conversation with Lopez-Chahoud. Selected works must connect visually or conceptually to one another to create a cogent and cohesive presentation that places emphasis on the viewer’s experience and the contextualization of the works exhibited. Under the creative direction of Omar Lopez-Chahoud, UNTITLED. is implementing key decisions that will differentiate it from the traditional art fair model. A limited selection of exhibitors, works curated by Lopez-Chahoud in conversation with the galleries, a program focused on diversity and conceptual rigor, and a focus on engagement are the hallmarks of this innovative fair. Approximately 50 galleries will be invited to exhibit at the fair, with 20-30% of the booths dedicated to solo projects and the rest limited to 2 or 3-person exhibitions. Lopez-Chahoud’s curatorial direction facilitates focused, cogent connections between otherwise disparate
works and invites collaborative discourse and contextualization. Lopez-Chahoud’s curatorial perspective aims at anchoring a younger generation of artists to the past by presenting some of the most diverse and engaging work by emerging, mid-career and established artists from countries around the world including Europe, Canada, Latin America and the US. Working with venerated architecture firm, K/R, the fair will capitalize on its prime, beachfront location with a custom designed structure that encourages a relaxed, indoor/outdoor experience emphasizing light, space and energy flow. UNTITLED. exhibitors are chosen to participate by process of invitation, rather than selection committee, and based on a process of Lopez-Chahoud communicating very intensely with the galleries to understand their ideas and point of view. “The work for UNTITLED. will keep you engaged — it will transcend trends. Many artists are skeptical of art fairs because of the context. Art fairs need to go in a more clear, interesting direction where artists feel proud to participate. At the end of the day it has to be about the artist.” – Omar Lopez-Chahoud, UNTITLED. Creative Director since 1958.

Arts&CultureUnique Marilyn: Intimate Exposures The Little Lighthouse Foundation hosts Nightmare on the Beach
The ever fascinating life of the iconic actress about whom several hundred books have been written and untold stories still to be heard, was further enhanced by the first time solo museum showing of “The Magic of Marilyn,” a rare collection of 27 photos of Marilyn Monroe by Bruno Bernard, internationally known as “Bernard of Hollywood,” which opened Wednesday, September 12 and will run through the end of November at the World Erotic Art Museum. Appearing at the opening reception was author Susan Bernard whose book “Marilyn: Intimate Exposures,” a lavishly illustrated volume celebrating Monroe’s enduring beauty through photographs by her legendary father, follows six previous books including the best-selling Bernard of Hollywood’s Ultimate Pin-Up Book published by Taschen. Bernard read from her new book and was joined by WEAM Artistic Director Helmut Schuster in a conversation revisiting the 50th anniversary year of Monroe’s passing. Best known for having “discovered” Monroe after they met in 1946 when Bernard invited her to a photo shoot, the enduring professional relationship transformed the then unknown Norma Jean to the iconic sex symbol the world has come to know as Marilyn Monroe. For the first time seen in a museum, the exhibit at WEAM follows the evolution of Monroe’s career through 27 photos, three of which will remain in the museum’s permanent collection. The Magic of Marilyn Born in Berlin in 1912, Bruno Bernard was a student of law and criminal psychology winning his PH D in law and later obtaining an international fellowship to California’s University of Berkley. He had escaped Nazi Germany and came to America alone and penniless. It was in Hollywood when theatrical giant Max Reinhardt opened his theater workshop that Bernard switched professions to study stage and motion picture direction under the tutelage of prominent director William Dieterle. Bernard discovered Marilyn in 1946 when she was still Norma Jean. He gave Norma Jean’s first professional sitting to his good friend Ben Lyons, the head of talent at 20th Century Fox which secured her first screen test and her first motion picture contract. When she appeared on the set of the “Seven Year Itch” in 1954, he took the now unforgettable photo of Marilyn standing over the subway grate in a billowing white dress.
Marilyn stopped everything and in front if the entire cast ran up to him and said “Remember Bernie everything started with you.” An image that remains internationally synonymous with Hollywood and the star who was undisputedly the sex symbol of her time, a 60 ft. high version of this iconic photograph was hung on the exterior of the New York Museum of Modern Art during the “Fame After Photography” exhibit in 1999. That same year, the International Center of Photography listed Bruno’s photo of Marilyn as one of the twenty most unforgettable images in photography. Bernard’s future folio would also include such all time glamour subjects as Elizabeth Taylor, Anita Ekberg, Lili Ct. Cyr, Mara Corday, Jeanne Crain, Brigitte Bardot, Lucille Ball, Marlene Dietrich, Gene Tierney, Janet Leigh, Jayne Mansfield and Julie Newmar. Bruno Bernard died in June, 1987 at the age of 78. Curators of the exhibit are Susan Bernard and Helmut Schuster. The World Erotic Art Museum is located at 1205 Washington Avenue with its adjoining new space located at 235 12th Street. Open Monday through Thursday, 11 A.M. to 10 P.M.; Friday and Saturday, 11 A.M. to Midnight. Tickets are $15. No one under 18 admitted. Further information is available by calling 305-5329336, or via www.weam.com and www.facebook.com/marilyintimateexposures.

LEGENDARY ARCHITECT ZAHA HADID RELEASES FIRST DETAILED RENDERINGS OF HER PARKING GARAGE DESIGN AT COLLINS PARK
Architect Zaha Hadid chosen by the City of Miami Beach to design its newest parking garage at Collins Park, has released the first renderings of her plan for the garage. Collins Park, a neighborhood that’s home to the Miami City Ballet, the Bass Museum, the City Library as well as the Gansevoort, W and Setai luxury hotels is also just blocks away from the Miami Beach Convention Center, the Frank Gehry -designed New World Center and the popular automobile-free Lincoln Road Mall. “The city [of Miami Beach] commissioned several studies for how to improve infrastructure and residential mobility,” Hadid notes on her website. “One of the conclusions was to provide additional parking both strategically and creatively.” The garage will be built on two existing surface parking lots, behind the Miami Beach Library and the Miami City Ballet, crossing above Liberty Avenue, which will become a pedestrian walkway for the width of that block. A large covered plaza to the east of the new pedestrian street and 20,000 square feet of retail to the west are to be supported by five levels of parking. Consistently sought-after, Hadid was the architect of the Aquatic Center for the 2012 London Olympics, the Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center, and has designed major building structures for BMW and around the world in Barcelona, Abu Dhabi and Cardiff, England. Hadid, the first woman to win the Pritzker Architecture Prize - the profession’s highest honor - joins the growing list of world
renowned architects who have gained international attention and are referred to as “Starchitects,” who have designed and overseen construction of new parking garages in the City of Miami Beach. Parking garages on Miami Beach have become more than a group of parking spaces. Some have become destinations within themselves and have attained iconic status. In a city that hosts the biggest art fair in the world and where every building has the potential to be a work of art, Hadid’s garage and those of other world recognized architects, have fit in brilliantly in a creatively sophisticated environment like Miami Beach. Miami Beach’s parking garages have received world-wide media attention and have become tourist attractions themselves. They include the Frank-Gehry designed, city-owned, Pennsylvania Avenue Garage; Herzog de Meuron’s minimalist, edgy space at 1111 Lincoln Road; Arquitectonica’s Ballet Valet Garage at 7th Street and Collins Avenue as well as their newest design in Sunset Harbour, which is currently under construction; Enrique Norton’s newly designed parking garage at 16th Street and Drexel Avenue; and Perkins and Will’s recent City Center Garage Project at 18th Street and Meridian Avenue. Hadid’s new design is expected to continue to raise the bar for garages worldwide. The City of Miami Beach is currently working with Hadid to determine commencement dates for the garage’s construction.

Advice for getting through a divorce BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ
Divorce Coach
I am totally confused. I have been married for 12 years and for many reasons, I am contemplating divorce. How do I know if I’m leaving for the right reasons? Let’s talk about the reasons you would stay. There are many reasons why people stay married: finances, familiarity, kids, guilt, fear, maintaining the extended family and friends, avoiding the pain of divorce, security, love, religion and appearances. Some of these are healthy reasons to stay and some not so much. Look at each of these and be honest with yourself how they factor into your decision. But to me, one of the most important questions that few people ask is the following, “By staying in this marriage, what am I modeling to my children regarding marriage, respect and relationships?” What are the messages that you are sending that they will base their future relationships on? I am getting divorced and we are set for mediation. I have to admit, I was the one that had an affair that ended our 20-year marriage. I am so guilt ridden that I am tempted to bypass alimony. My attorney is livid with me and keeps reminding me to think of the future. What are your thoughts? I think you need to heed your attorney’s advice. I understand why you would have guilt but bear in mind, it takes 2 to make a marriage and it takes 2 to break a marriage. Both of you have responsibility here for the breakdown of the marriage. Not knowing if you were a stay at home wife or your financial status, I would question how you plan on living through your Golden Years? Come up with an equitable distribution and don’t let your guilt cloud your judgment. Once that Marital Settlement Agreement is signed, sealed and delivered, it is costly and
difficult to get it changed. You both had lessons to learn in this marriage, learn them and move on. My soon to be ex is adamant that I have everything out of the house by the day the divorce is final. I am working, trying to find an apartment and stressed to the max, I just think he could be more flexible. Well, could he choose to be more flexible? Yes, but I have to say it is probably in both of your best interests to have everything that you agreed on that is yours out by D Day. I can’t tell you the number of times I have heard exes complain about not getting their things after the divorce is final. People can become bitter after the divorce and even though they had the best intentions prior, human nature takes over after the first alimony check goes out. My suggestion is to bite the bullet, get your things out even if that means a month in storage and make a clean break. Note to Self: I will keep things in perspective as that is for my highest good Debbie’s Library – The Other Life by Ellen Meister (This is not a self-help book. Other cardiac surgery programs claim they’re #1. We actually are. Many cardiac surgery programs claim to be number one. The Heart Institute at Palmetto General Hospital actually is. It’s not just an eye-catching line. We are #1 in Florida for Cardiac Surgery according to HealthGrades, the country’s largest healthcare ratings organization. This same independent source also named us one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Surgery. This designation is based on analysis of our results up to 180 days after surgery. When compared to all other Florida hospitals, we had the best outcomes. We are very proud to have achieved this remarkable success after only five years and we want our community to know they can trust their hearts to the only true #1.

Moldovan travel show host gets first taste of Miami BY TASHA GIUDA Miami Beach is no stranger to European tourism: 32.4% of greater Miami’s 10 million annual visitors hail from our neighbor across the ocean. Despite this significant statistic, many are not so familiar with tourists from Moldova, most likely due to its standing as one of Europe’s poorest nations. It is a rare treat for Moldovans to be able to venture out of their home’s landlocked location between Romania and Ukraine. Beautiful and unassuming, 28-year-old Aliona Mirosnicenco is one of these privileged few. Director of media and production at Moldova’s Radio Alla and host of her own weekly travel show featuring international tourism destinations, Aliona, who goes by Ellen Green in the states, enables her Baltic States audience to live vicariously through her travels. She holds the dream job of many: professional jetsetter. “For Russians and Romanians who’d love to visit this sunny paradise, most think Miami is just beach and nightlife, but I wanted to look deeper and discover new things,” said Green. With a mere month to explore her new territory, she quickly put her all-inclusive Miami venue and attraction pass to proper use, exiting the beach in search of Miami’s lesser-known art and culture scene. Villa Vizcaya, the ancient Spanish Monastery in North Miami, the Museum of Science, Butterfly World, the Metro Zoo, and the Seaquarium are some of Green’s favorite locales crossed off of her endless checklist. Citing Miami and Miami Dade as perfect destinations for the adventurous Florida traveler, Green has already caused quite a stir. “I have, to date, sent several articles overseas already, writing about my experiences in Miami and Florida; the response has been absolutely terrific. Many people from all over the Baltic area have been flooding me with comments and questions, representing for the first time potential vacationers that are truly finding out very important information on this citynot just the beach or its night life, but also areas of interest that they would never find in an article or video.” “The Ellen Green Travel Show” is broadcast every Saturday morning on cable television and radio, with videos produced in countless top destinations such as Spain, Italy, Greece, England, and France. Not bad for a girl who started “just for fun,” moving her way up from art manager at a music nightclub to a radio DJ for a new station, then on to London School of Radio and Television, prompting her to launch her own show that is now in its third successful year. The show’s frequent vacation
traveler program is always seeking new destinations in order to discover new points of interest to educate listeners and viewers prior to venturing out on their own. While it is true that Green is a naturalborn communicator exuding charisma, do not ask her which destination is her favorite. “It is too difficult to choose!” she exclaims. “I like Greece, France, Italy, Spain and of course when you go for short periods each opens up its own unique adventure, so it’s hard to tell my favorite. London is among my favorite because it is very cultured, with so many different nationalities and architectural points. Florida is my favorite right now because I’m still here and exploring. Greece, which I visited in Spring time, makes my top 3.” The many disparities between life and culture in Moldova and the United States continually intrigue Green. The large immigrant population within the states, particularly in Florida, fosters a tremenGreen enables her Baltic States audience to live vicariously through her travels. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

dous mix of various cultures in everything from food to fashion. “Fashion weeks and shows in the USA are full of influence of different countries’ cultures; in Europe, they’re more conservative, especially in Italy or France. It’s good- exciting.” She also notes the warmer climate effect, identifying Floridians as “smiley, positive sun people,” compared to Russians’ more serious demeanor in the wake of dark, freezing 1 degree weather. Despite long distance, Green’s family remains her biggest support system. They are always the first to read and critique her articles, providing her with energy and
inspiration to keep her on track. With an Olympic swimmer brother who is also currently in the U.S., international traveling seems to be in the bloodline. Green is quick to thank all who have made her trip to the states possible, ranging from Disney World Director of Sales and Marketing Europe Todd Heiden, to Miami hosts and Chamber members Laurence Branchetti and Barbara Knaub, to Florida Senator Marco Rubio. The first political figure who stepped forward to promote goodwill and tourism in the Baltic States, Senator Rubio provided crucial help in endorsing her trip to the U.S. and making possible the very first video and tourist attraction information to be delivered in Russian and Romanian. “Like so many travelers I have always had a dream to discover and explore places on our beautiful planet,” said Green. “I felt it was time to explore the tropical paradise that I had only read about. Finally my dreams have come true: the people, the cli-
mate and food, and the culture are absolutely fantastic. Floridians are truly blessed with this huge playground available to them daily.” According to Green, a new airline service will be flying direct from Moscow to Miami starting this month. The frequency of flights from the Baltic area and Moscow has increased dramatically, with the large population of Russians residing in the Sunny Isles area drawing many visitors into South Florida. With additional support from the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce, Department of Tourism, and Miami Beach Convention and Visitors Center, an influx of Moldovans and Romanians could be in near sight. All of Green’s experiences in the Miami and Florida area will be televised and promoted throughout the coming months as “A Trip to Remember”; be sure to check out her take on Miami, as well as future exciting travels, at Radio Alla online.

Miami’s Grammy-nominated choir begins season at all-time high As Seraphic Fire begins their 11th Season, the professional choral ensemble is riding an all-time high. Against a bleak backdrop of failing arts organizations nationwide, Seraphic Fire is entering the new season with a record number of subscribers, a newly-signed record distribution deal, and the optimistic energy of an organization on the rise. Seraphic Fire’s 10th Anniversary Season brought with it a series of celebrated achievements — most notably the ensembles two 2012 Grammy nominations, making it the only choir in North and South America to be nominated. With the national spotlight suddenly upon the ensemble, Seraphic Fire went on to close the performance year with more sold-out concerts than ever before. Continuing this meteoric rise, Seraphic Fire is emerging from its highestgrossing summer to date. Additionally, this past August, Seraphic Fire’s independent recording label, Seraphic Fire Media, closed a global distribution deal with Naxos of America, the nation’s leader in classical music distribution. The deal will grant Seraphic Fire com-
plete artistic control over future projects while placing the ensemble’s albums in brick-and-mortar stores around the world and online across all digital platforms. Seraphic Fire’s 2012-2013 season began this past September with a tour across the Midwest. Highly anticipated—and even sold out—performances to audiences in Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania were received eagerly. To open the regular season, Seraphic Fire will present Simple Gifts, a celebration of refreshingly simple Americana. The beautifully sincere music of Aaron Copland, declared “the American composer” by The New York Times, and his contemporaries, will be on stunning display as Seraphic Fire departs on an incredible season. The concert, entitled Simple Gifts will be performed at St. Jude Melkite Church on Wednesday, October 17 at 7:30pm; First United Methodist Church of Coral Gables on Saturday, October 19, at 8:00pm; and at Miami Beach Community Church on Sunday, October 20, at 4:00pm. Tickets and information are available at 305-2859060 or SeraphicFire.org .
