Chamber announced a $30,000 grand prize winner of AETNA Voices of Health Award BY TASHA GIUDA
The road to victory for the Miami Beach Education Foundation grew from a small grassroots effort into a city-wide campaign: nearly two months of tireless hard work and 205,000 votes later, the massive outreach efforts finally paid off. On Tuesday, October 30th, representatives from Aetna- one of the nation’s leading diversified health care benefits companies- arrived at the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce Board of Governors meeting to announce the Chamber as the winner of their 2012 Voices of Health Award. Beating 33 other U.S. organizations, the Chamber pulled through at the close of the online voting competition to win the $30,000 grand prize, which will ––––––––––––––––––––––

New Chair Alan A. Lips offers Personal Insight as ‘Expert’ BY JESSICA FUENTES
On October 30th, the Emerging Leadership Council held their monthly “Lunch With an Expert” at Café Avanti. Over 60 business professionals gathered to listen to our new Chairman of the Board, Alan A. Lips, making it one of the most successful lunches of the series. The intimate event was moderated by Past Chair of the Chamber and owner of Miami Fashion Week Aaron Perry. Aaron began Alan’s introduction by stating that “without Alan’s leadership on the Board, this Chamber would not be where it is today.” Together, they make for a truly dynamic duo in and out of the boardroom, so much so that they easily provided listeners with a sense of intimacy and comfort.
Alan Lips was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. Miami Beach was always his favorite place to visit, and ironically he fell in love with a girl during college that was from here. They moved here post-graduation, got married, and now have three beautiful children. He still considers Miami Beach the best place in the world. Alan adds passion and a personal approach to everything that he does. As a partner at Gerson, Preston and Robinson, one of the most successful accounting firms in South Florida, Alan’s area of focus is International Tax. “One way or another, everyone is touched by people coming from South America,” says Lips, adding “they just don’t get the right advice.” Alan distinguishes himself from others by becoming that reliable source who meets
with clients since day one, and builds an effective structure that works personally for their family and business. One of Alan’s primary focuses is giving back to the community. In addition to his leadership in the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce, he co-chaired and established the Young Founders of Mount Sinai Hospital with an interest and goal in providing care to people who cannot afford it. Nevertheless, he made it another success. Our Chairman’s advice to new members: “Join a committee and treat the Chamber as the intimate setting that it is. The Chamber provides the outlet for people to build relation-

Letter from the Chair BY ALAN A. LIPS
I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on my first month as Chairman. What a chamber and what a great experience to be in this new position! I said it before and I will say it again: there is no chamber like the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce. We are so lucky to have such a high-quality group of caring and devoted individuals as our Chamber staff. They work so hard to make sure that every member gets a real and meaningful return on their investment. They ensure that every event goes flawlessly, and they are always available to meet and educate our members on every opportunity available to help create new business and new relationships. Our Quarterly Pillar Breakfast at the Alexander Hotel was better than ever with an informative and educated overview of the incredibly long and complicated election ballot, provided by our dear friend Michael Putney. Everyone in attendance listened carefully to every word and left with a clear understanding of the local political races and the numerous proposed amendments. Thank you, Michael, for your devotion to the highest quality journalism with the most accurate and unbiased opinions on the complicated politics of today! We were also fortunate to have the Business Council Women’s “Breakfast with a View” at the Forge with University of Miami President Donna Shalala. What an asset we have right here in South Florida with such an incredible and high-ranking educational institution! Dr. Shalala’s words were inspirational and many interested guests had the opportunity to ask their questions and share wonderful experiences.

The program will aid in directly combating the existing obesity epidemic, as many chronic conditions currently going untreated at local schools are symptoms of being overweight. “This was an awesome community effort that truly demonstrates the power of membership,” said Chamber President and CEO Jerry Libbin. Through the Aetna Voices of Health campaign, which aims to close racial and ethnic health care quality gaps and help people lead healthier lives, the public was able to cast votes from August until October for their favored nominated non-profit organization. The Miami Beach Education Foundation finished in first place with 205,629 votes; coming in at second was the Dallas Mayor’s Youth Fitness Initiative at 168,657 votes. Although still new, this year’s campaign experienced some growth compared to 2011, the year the program was established: last year’s 636,539 total votes grew to 718,354 in 2012. Historically, Miami Beach has always drawn international LGBT travelers, thanks in part to the City’s efforts to ensure guests are safe, comfortable, and most importantly, entertained. Now after two decades of openly welcoming the gay community, Miami Beach has gone beyond just being “LGBT friendly” and is taking extra steps to ensure that the City is the number one vacation spot of choice for the LGBT community. LGBT vacationers are welcomed with a LGBT Visitor Center; the option to stay at the gay traveler boutique hotel, The Lords, which the New York Times deemed “comfortable and welcoming” and a unique walking tour which provides an LGBT history of the City. Miami Beach has even initiated The Pink Flamingo Hospitality program—a LGBT focused hospitality training program created specifically for Miami Beach hotels and resorts to train their employees to generously accommodate gay-friendly travelers. Miami Beach has some of the hottest
LGBT events in the country. Come celebrate LGBT pride all year long at one of the many events happening on Miami Beach this year. Winter Party Festival, Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, Gay Pride Parade, Aqua Girl, Summerfest and White Party Week™ are just a few of the events bringing the World’s LGBT community to Miami Beach. In November White Party Week™ brings action and awareness to Miami Beach. The event began in 1985 to support what is known today as the 501[c](3) nonprofit Care Resource, a community based AIDS service organization rooted in the merger of Health Crisis Network and Community Research Initiative. More than a dozen events round out the White Party Week schedule, making it one of the hottest tickets in Miami Beach. For a complete White Party Week schedule of events, visit www.whiteparty.org. Mount Sinai Medical Center launches lung screening program 90% of lung cancers are curable with early detection Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among both men and women – responsible for more deaths each year than breast, colon and prostate cancer combined. In the U.S., tobacco use still accounts for 87 percent of lung cancer deaths; and, smokers are up to 30 times more likely to develop lung cancer than non-smokers are. However, when diagnosed early, more than 90 percent of lung cancers can be cured with prompt surgical intervention. In an effort to save more lives from this disease, Mount Sinai Medical Center has developed a lung cancer screening program that aims to diagnose lung cancer in its earliest possible stage. Lung cancer in its early stages has no symptoms. Hence, more than 85 percent of men and women diagnosed with lung cancer are found to be in a late stage of the disease with very little chance of being cured. However, low-dose CT lung cancer screenings, available at Mount Sinai, offers greater hope for survival through early detection, especially for high-risk patients. A Computerized Tomography (CT) lung scan is an efficient and painless exam. It combines special X-ray equipment with sophisticated computers to produce multiple images of

your lungs, taken from different angles. Mount Sinai is able to provide a low-dose lung screening because, as a Radiation Safety Provider, we have instituted safeguards to ensure the smallest amount of radiation dose exposure to patients undergoing testing. These safeguards help eliminate
duplicate studies in the future and ensure that you receive the information you need with the least amount of exposure. Recently, the American Association for Thoracic Surgery Task Force for Lung Cancer Screening and Surveillance released clinical guidelines recommending annual lung cancer
screenings with low-dose CT for smokers and former smokers age 55 to 79 with a 30 packyear history, or age 50 with a 20 pack-year history and additional risk factors. “Based on these new guidelines, we are pleased to announce that Mount Sinai Medical Center’s multidisciplinary lung cancer screening program is an opportunity to offer high-risk patients a greater chance of surviving lung cancer,” said Dr. Roy F. Williams, thoracic surgeon with Mount Sinai’s Division of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. Dr. Williams is one of only a few surgeons in the nation with experience in minimally invasive lung surgery, and Mount Sinai is one of a select few hospitals in South Florida offering robotic lung surgery, which requires less time in the hospital and offers a quicker recovery. Mount Sinai’s multidisciplinary approach leads to greater accuracy of diagnosis, consistent clinical results, decreased time to treatment and higher patient satisfaction. To learn more about Mount Sinai’s lung screening program, or to schedule an appointment, please call 305-535-3434 or visit www.msmc.com.

7 ways to Leverage 60 Seconds BY J. LANCE MEAD AND JEFFREY J. STAY Executive Director BNI N.Y. LLC; Executive Director BNI-Miami Dade, Inc., respectably
People often look at networking as a tired term, but it can be your stepping stone to greater influence, ultimately, referrals. When meeting someone new, here are 7 proven steps to improve your networking ability: 1. INTRODUCE YOURSELF CLEARLY AND CONCISELY Though this may see obvious, it is often overlooked or done poorly. First, say your name and company, and then ask the same from your listener. 2. BE SPECIFIC ABOUT YOUR LINE OF WORK Don’t say, “I’m in computers,” or “I’m in travel.” Instead be specific. For example, “My firm specializes in local area networks for the real estate industry. Or, “We focus on the lowest possible fares for law firms that fly their lawyers on short notice, and we can get them waivers and favors reduce their bottom lines.” 3. ORGANIZE YOUR INTRODUCTION Prepare a 15-second opening statement
that describes what you do. If your product or service is technical or hard to explain, begin with a 15 to 20-second story that illustrates what you do. Stories help create and maintain listener interest. 4. INFORM, DON’T SELL Don’t come on with a sales pitch. When in doubt, remember a low key introduction is always better. 5. BE YOURSELF Not being you can make you look silly, artificial, or worse. Learn what makes people receptive and master that. There is no substitute for authenticity. 6. BE AN AVID LISTENER When someone’s is speaking, it’s tempting to be thinking of your response. But careful listening builds goodWill, trust, and confidence. 7. FOLLOW-UP Always send a personal note to followup your conversations. It is unlikely your listener will need your product or service immediately. But don’t be surprised when they make the call and say “1 really appreciated your note when we met last.” You only have one chance at a first impression. An effective networker can’t afford to waste that opportunity.

Daniel Craig sheds some light on Skyfall BY LAUREN COHEN
There aren’t many sights more surreal than that of Daniel Craig, dressed in a crisp, Bondesque suit, walking toward you. So to then have the opportunity to speak with 007 himself – well, you can imagine what that was like. Most surprising, though, was the realization that Craig has a real sense of humor underneath that slick veneer. It’s that subtle, dry humor that he demonstrated in person that makes “Skyfall,” the latest entry into the 50-year-old James Bond franchise, one of the most fun Bond films yet. I recently sat down with him to discuss the film, the state of the next “Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” movie (“I’m very optimistic that it might possibly happen maybe someday,” he joked), as well as his role in the London Olympics opening ceremony, Bond’s chauvinistic tendencies, and all the immense praise that “Skyfall” has been receiving. This is your second time working with director Sam Mendes, first on “Road to Perdition,” and now on “Skyfall.” What was it like working with Sam again? Did you guys have any communication between those two films? Daniel Craig: Not a great deal. I’d see Sam, you know, here and there. I’d do theatre sometimes and he’d come and see me in that…I saw him at a party and I kind of offered him the job [to direct “Skyfall”], which is not my place to do. One too many drinks. I always thought if it hadn’t worked out I could just blame the booze…It was easy and that conversation that I had with him that night really was the start of it. He was being very complimentary about Casino [Royale], and I wanted to pick his brains as a director – because I knew we were going to start thinking about the next film – and I wanted to pick his brains about what we could do, and how we could make it better, and I had all these ideas and we bounced them off each other a little bit and I kind of sort of said: “Do you want to do it, why don’t you do it?” and so he did. We learn a lot more about the character of James Bond in this movie than we have in previous films – how did you approach that? Craig: You know it’s easy to say now, but I always felt that we could explore him…you read the books, I mean they were written a long time ago so I suppose
MOVIE REVIEW Craig: We love Roger! [laughs] How does it feel to receive such praise from a past Bond actor? Craig: Well it’s very nice; he’s a lovely, lovely man, Roger. He was the first James Bond I ever saw in the cinema so I suppose I have a real affinity to him and a real soft spot for Roger, but he’s also a gentleman. And, you know, I pay him well [laughs].
Daniel Craig in the latest Bond movie Skyfall. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
that kind of in a way they’re dated, but they still stand up as good reads. And Fleming really does explore the characters – there’s a lot of self doubt there, I mean he kills people for a living, it bothers him…I keep saying that no one told me what the rules were, as far as action and adventure movies were concerned. I always thought that you could have a plot, and therefore a character…I never forget I’m playing James Bond, this isn’t a character study. It’s giving somebody who is closed off, letting kind of a little bit go occasionally just so that we see in, and see him knocked down so that we can see him stand back up again. Those things, I think, hopefully, make for just a more enjoyable movie…that’s the thing about an action movie, where you have a hero. The world needs saving at the beginning of the movie, and at the end of the movie he saves the world. I wanted to do a bit more than that. A lot of people have expressed optimism that this could be the first Bond movie to receive a Best Picture nomination. Are you confident in this? Do you think a Bond movie could ever achieve this? Craig: I never would speculate about stuff like that. It’s very nice, one of the nicest things. I can’t lie, when the press started to come out it was a huge relief for me. Because you invest a large part of your life — as did many people — in this film. I knew we had a good film, but who knows how people are going to respond to it. I think that to sort of speculate now would be a little bit jumping the gun. There are
some great movies out there this year, and there are some more movies to come out this year that are going to be good. I hope that people like [cinematographer] Roger Deakins are in the mix somewhere because he’s done such an amazing job, and it would be nice to see him get a nomination, or even [win] one. We spoke with the Bond girls earlier — we’ve actually decided to start calling them “Bond ladies.” Craig: Yes, there you go. We’re moving forward! Can you speak on your two Bond ladies in this film? Craig: Again, with the casting, we couldn’t have done better, or wished to have done better. Both Bérénice and Naomie – as well as Judi, we can’t leave her out of the equation. Naomie was just perfect, I look forward to sort of doing more with Naomie; she’s got the action chops as well as the acting chops. And Bérénice is just so gorgeous and exotic and a wonderful actress and I think in way is kind of an old-fashioned Bond girl but is so much more…I love the fact that Bond stays sort of chauvinistic, I mean I think it’s important that he does. Otherwise it would be kind of lying to say he’s a modern man, he’s not really a modern man. But putting strong women in front him — that makes it exciting, and sexier, I think. Roger Moore was recently quoted as saying that you’ll go down as the “best Bond in history.”
What was it like working with Danny Boyle and the Queen on that short for the London Olympics opening ceremony? Craig: All I can really say is, look, I was very honored to play just a little part in that opening ceremony…it was incredibly moving, the whole opening ceremony and was perfect. But it was very surreal. I was at the palace working with the Queen; it’s not kind of something I ever dreamed I’d ever do. But she was lovely, just very keen to do it and very happy to do it. We laughed a lot. It was very quick, it was kind of over before I could think about it, really…and I had to keep it very secret though, that’s the thing. Are there any things you’ve learned to do in the films that you’ve been able to apply in real life? Craig: I don’t finish work and go skydiving as a hobby, or anything like that, no…Some of the things I do in the movie are good fun to do, but they stay in the movie. I get to drive cars and shoot guns and do all of those things. But, you know, I can’t drive a car like that without getting arrested or shoot a gun like that without getting arrested, so I have to leave them at work. Don’t you think that people would be a little more lenient with you though? Craig: What, if I drove an Aston Martin at 80 mph through Manhattan, shooting a gun? No! The NYPD would just basically throw me inside after tasering me 100 times — with good reason. [laughs] Skyfall opened in theaters everywhere on November 9th.

Lincoln MKT crossover upgraded, refined for 2013 Grant Miller CAR CORNER With three-row seating for up to eight people, the Lincoln MKT full-size crossover utility vehicle is perfect for the on-the-go family. For 2013, the MKT looks lower and wider, and has been given a new grille, front fascia and new wheel designs, all aimed at making it more recognizable as part of the Lincoln family. The MKT also has a much improved ride, sharper handling, better fuel economy and new safety technologies including rear inflatable seat belts. Continuously Controlled Damping (CCD) is fitted to the new MKT when it is equipped with the optional 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine. The adjustable suspension gives the vehicle a balance of ride comfort and handling, and CCD is constantly tuning and refining the ride quality in all road conditions. It reads the road surface and continuously adjusts the suspension in real time within the three selectable ranges – Sport, Normal and Comfort.
The standard engine for the 2013 MKT is a more powerful and efficient 3.7-liter V-6 that includes twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT). The ability to vary camshaft timing to optimize the opening and closing of intake and exhaust valves increases the engine’s power and efficiency. Horsepower is hiked to 303, a 10 percent increase that also brings improved fuel economy to 17/25 mpg. A twin-turbo 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine is also available. It delivers V-8 performance with the fuel economy of a V-6. The gasoline turbo direct-injected (GTDI) engine produces 365 hp at 5,700 rpm and was named one Ward’s “10 Best Engines” when it was introduced in 2010. The MKT offers two versions of the sixspeed SelectShift Automatic transmission, both with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The 3.7-liter Ti-VCT V-6 uses the 6F-50, and the more powerful 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 gets the heavy-duty 6F-55. This transmission has high-energy friction materials, a larger ring gear and a specific torque converter that optimize the 6F-55 to handle the high-torque output of the twinturbo 3.5-liter. These gearboxes offer the driver a choice between fully automatic operation and manual control. Unlike some competitive transmissions, SelectShift won’t second guess the driver with an override shift.
2013 Lincoln MKT has a new grille, front fascia and new wheel designs. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
The manual control is truly controlled by the driver. All-wheel drive is standard with the twinturbo 3.5-liter V-6. In good weather over smooth roads at modest speeds – when AWD is not needed – the system intelligently routes power only to the front wheels to improve fuel efficiency. When driver input or road conditions (such as on rain-slicked or snowcovered roads) indicate that slip might occur, the system sends power to the rear wheels to help prevent tire slip from happening in the first place
A myriad of inputs enables the computercontrolled system to identify and immediately react – in as little as 16 milliseconds – to changing road conditions and driver demands. The amount of torque sent to the rear axle varies depending on road conditions and dynamic needs. Base price on the Lincoln MKT is $45,285. Grant Miller is the publisher of Community Newspapers. The $outh Florida Gaming Repor t
Recap and Reach Out BY ISADORE HAVENICK
The recently concluded elections included a question to the voters in Palm Beach and Lee Counties as to whether or not they wished to approve slot machines at pari-mutuel facilities [dog tracks] located within their respective counties. In both cases the measure passed quite convincingly. The rationale behind these measures was that they would limit the installation of slot machines to these two specific locations, would be entirely financed with-
out any public or government funding, and would be a major sources of both construction and full time jobs. The voter approval sends a strong message to Tallahassee that a comprehensive gaming plan must be developed for the state and that the public is very much in favor of certain types of gaming at prescribed locations. As the writer of this column I am able to get the facts out to the citizens of Miami Beach. I am also interested in getting feedback from Miami Beach residents as to their views on gaming inside and outside of our city borders. I look forward to more interaction with the community and to getting a better handle on the gaming future of our city, county, and state.

Welcome Miami Beach’s Running Season! BY CHARLOTTE LIBOV
The change in the weather always means that it’s finally the perfect season to go for a run, and there’s no better way to do that than in participating, and training for the upcoming Live Ultimate event on Dec. 15 right here on Miami Beach. This event, now also held in Los Angeles and San Francisco, has it’s roots here, when Miami Beach resident Marc Wachter established it as the “Ocean Beach Run” as a way to bring his friends together a fun run. Last year, the Live Ultimate event attracted some 2,000 people, and this year, at least 3,000, and perhaps even 4,000 are expected, says Brian Huberty, the event’s chief running officer. A key to Live Ultimate’s popularity is variety. The traditional 5K walk/run, which takes runners along Ocean Drive, remains the cornerstone of the event. But this year, a quarter marathon, has been added, Huberty and Geoff Bagshaw, Equinox’s area group fitness manager for Florida,
will lead them. They will be held which takes runners by the Miami Beach Golf Course. In addition, there’s also an opportunity for teams to participate, and even a Kid’s Dash for children ages two to 10. The day will also include a festive postevent party at Nikki Beach, where trophies and ribbons will be awarded. “South Florida is saturated with marathons and 5K’s, so we added the quarter marathon as an exciting new distance that incorporates a 5K and a 10K as well,” says Hubert. Live Ultimate is the first running event in South Florida to hold a quarter marathon, and is probably among the first in the state as well, he noted. Also, just the word “marathon” connotes prestige and will provide participants with bragging rights around the water cooler on Monday morning, he noted. It’s also a great way to get ready for the Miami ING marathon and half-marathon on Jan. 27, 2013. Live Ultimate is also a fundraiser, and will benefit charities including the Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign, a national initiative to end child hunger by 2015. But it’s not only the run that gives you

the opportunity to get fit; Live Ultimate’s sponsoring partner, Equinox, is holding two free training sessions prior to the event, on Wednesday, Nov. 14, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.
Huberty and Equinox Group Fitness Manager Geoff Bagshaw will lead the training sessions, along with two female running experts. For more information, call Equinox at 305-673-1172 or visit Live Ultimate’s website or Facebook page.

THE FUTURE IS NOW: Educate Yourself on LongTerm Care Insurance BY RICHARD HERMAN
My good friend and client Bruce had good intentions of taking care of his ailing 80-year-old father who came to live with him. After all, Bruce is a teacher and has summers off; however, after three sleepless nights while trying to provide care for his dad, Bruce hired help. Seven years and $600,000 later his father passed and during that process Bruce came to clearly understand that even though his health was excellent , one day it would change and the last thing he wanted to do was burden his daughter and spend down his life savings as his father had done. At age 51, Bruce decided to buy long term care insurance. Understanding LTC insurance is like learning a new language. There are moving parts and decisions to make. In general, you can think of it as buying a pool of money or leveraged dollars. Over a thirty year time frame Bruce will have paid $51,000 in premiums and will have a benefit worth $820,000. He hopes he will “waste” every premium dollar and never need long term care, but just in case, he now has a plan for his future, which has also bought him peace of mind. My goal is to EDUCATE my clients and that is what I did with Bruce. I guided him through this difficult process, and helped him realize that because one’s health can change in the blink of an eye, there is a real need to formulate a backup plan today. I worked with Bruce in a unique way using state of the art software and an easy to use screen sharing program to educate him on the issues and definitions of LTC insurance. Once we completed that process I
showed him all the insurance companies available to him in his state. Every insurance company selling LTC insurance appeared on his computer screen, from the least to the most expensive .Last of all, I explained to him how the benefits differed among the different companies. I completed this whole process with Bruce without ever entering his home. When his policy was approved, I delivered it to him. So you may ask, was Bruce the right age to buy LTC insurance? Absolutely! The younger you are and the better your health, the lower the premiums. My youngest client is 38 but most of my clients bought their insurance in their mid-40s to mid-50s. If you wait too long certain health conditions become uninsurable. I must admit that it was well over a year after his father’s death that Bruce bought his policy. The next year his 80-year-old aunt passed, but in addition, his 45-year-old sister was diagnosed with breast cancer and also passed that year. Any lingering notion of denial, of believing that he will never need care, quickly left his mind. Our health does change without warning. My good friend truly had a difficult year. I ask you to put on your “business hat” and look at all the assets that you have accumulated over your lifetime as YOUR business. Long term care is the greatest risk you will face down the road. Does it make sense to protect against this risk? Richard Herman has been in the insurance business for 30 years and has specialized in LTC for 15 years. He can be reached at (413) 519-1786 or richard.herman@ltc-associates.com.

Advice for getting through a divorce BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ My ex-husband is always calling me on his weekend with the kids complaining that the kids are not doing chores at his house, talking back to him, etc. I have tried in the past to have us work together on “house rules” so we are consistent in both households but it hasn’t worked. I’m tired of him calling me and demanding that I step in and do something. What can I do? What you can do is tell your ex that on his weekends he needs to handle his household issues with the children. As with anything that has to be conveyed, do it nicely, but firmly. Realistically, him bringing you into the mix to “do something” actually takes the power away from him as a parent. That is between him and his children. I’m not talking about major issues when the two of you should be on the same page, but the day-to-day “stuff” can frustrate any parent. When he has the children, that is your time to give your mind and nerves a break and to rejuvenate so upon their return you are refreshed and on your game. My ex has taken to picking and choosing what he will and will not follow through on according to my MSA. What can I do, I’m getting overwhelmed and frustrated, not to mention exceedingly angry. This was an agreement we both agreed to. Welcome to the real world. Lesson #1 in the divorce game is whatever you both agreed to doesn’t necessarily translate into following it. My suggestions are as follows: 1) Take a deep breath and don’t let this consume you, because it can if you let it and, quite frankly, that is probably what he wants. 2) When he doesn’t follow through on something, send him an email with the infraction listed in the subject and in a very business like fashion, address the infraction referencing the page and paragraph that clearly outlines his obligation from the MSA. 3) Create
a folder on your desktop for these emails so they are all in one place. 4) The least expensive way to resolve this would be to mediate; but if he is unwilling, I would suggest seeking legal counsel to discuss your options. Just remember that divorce is not fair on many different levels and you can lose a lot of happiness trying to make it so. My ex has moved on rather quickly and it appears that he hasn’t missed a beat. His business is flourishing, his mistress has moved in with him, they travel all the time and, oh yeah, he got a new car. Meanwhile, I have to start all over and am struggling in every aspect of my life. When is it going to be my time? I hear you and I understand. You, my dear, hold that answer and no one else. Your time starts when you decide it starts. Stop looking over the fence in his backyard and put that energy and focus on your Plan B. First step is to change your thoughts from that of a victim to that of a warrior. You can make a better way for yourself but it begins with one simple thing — your mindset. Change that and brace yourself for an amazing ride. Note to Self: My life begins with me and no one else. I have the power to direct my destiny.
