Letter from the Chair BY ALAN A. LIPS
I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on my first month as Chairman. What a chamber and what a great experience to be in this new position! I said it before and I will say it again: there is no chamber like the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce. We are so lucky to have such a high-quality group of caring and devoted individuals as our Chamber staff. They work so hard to make sure that every member gets a real and meaningful return on their investment. They ensure that every event goes flawlessly, and they are always available to meet and educate our members on every opportunity available to help create new business and new relationships. Our Quarterly Pillar Breakfast at the Alexander Hotel was better than ever with an informative and educated overview of the incredibly long and complicated election ballot, provided by our dear friend Michael Putney. Everyone in attendance listened carefully to every word and left with a clear understanding of the local political races and the numerous proposed amendments. Thank you, Michael, for your devotion to the highest quality journalism with the most accurate and unbiased opinions on the complicated politics of today! We were also fortunate to have the Women’s Business Council “Breakfast with a View” at the Forge with University of Miami President Donna Shalala. What an asset we have right here in South Florida with such an incredible and high-ranking educational institution! Dr. Shalala’s words were inspirational and many interested guests had the opportunity to ask their questions and share wonderful experiences. ––––––––––––––––––––– See

LEADERSHIP SPOTLIGHT ALAN G. RANDOLPH Alan G. Randolph is a Senior Vice President at SunTrust Bank in Private Wealth Management and has been very fortunate with a successful career in banking, with many of his clients living in the city of Miami Beach. Originally from Enid, Oklahoma, Alan moved to Miami Beach in 1990 after he graduated from the University of Tampa and is currently a North Beach resident. He became part of the rebirth of Miami Beach with the new businesses, hotels and real estate opportunities that began to take shape in the early 1990s. Alan’s passion is volunteering his time for various charities and not-for-profits and giving back to his community. To name a few, he currently serves as the Treasurer of the Bass Museum of Art and is an active board member for the Mount Sinai Medical Center Foundation and the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce, where he served as Chair from 2004 until 2006. Every year, Alan co-chairs the Brunch for the Animals for the Humane Society of Miami – Dade. This year the event was held at Merrick Park, which raised $65,000 through his efforts along with his co-chair and “pet partner in crime,” Amy Zakarin. The spay and neuter problem is of special interest to Alan and he believes that there is a way to save the lives of every cat and dog in Miami Dade County. With his interest in contemporary art, Alan became a minority partner with his good friend, Jeff Lawson, in conceptualizing and creating the UNTITLED. Art
ALAN G. RANDOLPH Fair, which will open on December 3rd. The idea was to engage the Miami Beach LOCAL community with a new international fair that would offer collectors an alternative viewing experience. Randolph and Lawson selected John Keenen and Terrence Riley of respected architecture firm K/R to design a compelling structure that will highlight the prime beachfront location at Ocean Drive and 12th street and create an engaging environment that maximizes the flow of the space. The fair will highlight a mix of established and emerging galleries, representing the most impactful living artists at the forefront of contemporary art.

MOUNT SINAI, from page 1 pared with the same kind of valve surgery done through a breastbone splitting approach. The investigators hypothesized that in COPD patients, a smaller, less traumatic surgery would lead to better results. Minimally invasive valve surgery in these patients increased survival, reduced postoperative complications, and shortened length of hospital stay when compared with traditional median sternotomy surgery. The study was conducted by Orlando Santana, M.D. (Director of Echocardiography Laboratory, Columbia University Division of Cardiology at Mount Sinai Medical Center); Gervasio Lamas, M.D. (Chief, Columbia University Division of Cardiology at Mount Sinai Medical Center); Joseph Lamelas, M.D. (Chief of Cardiac Surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center); Javier Reyna, M.D. and Alexandre M. Benjo, M.D. There were 165 subjects, at least 68 years of age or older, who underwent isolated valve surgery during the analysis period. Of these, 100 underwent minimally invasive surgery and 65 underwent a median sternotomy. All minimally invasive cases were performed by Mount Sinai’s Chief of Cardiac Surgery, Dr. Joseph Lamelas, who has the highest volume of cardiac surgeries

I must also mention our Pillar Networker at Baoli: I was almost blown away just trying to get there as a result of Hurricane Sandy. Well, Sandy didn’t stop me or 120 other members from coming out and networking and having a great time. We must be doing something right to get that kind of turnout! And of course, we started our Membership Drive on October 1st, with a goal of bringing in 100 new members in three months. We have four teams: Chamber
in Florida and the best cardiac surgical outcomes in Florida, among surgeons who perform the highest volume of complex cases. In this study, when compared to the 65 patients who underwent a traditional median sternotomy, the 100 patients who underwent a minimally invasive valve surgery had significantly better outcomes that resulted in a: Lower percentage of complication rates during procedure (30% vs. 54%) Lower incidence of kidney failure (0% vs. 1.5%) Lower rate of infection (3% vs. 11%) Shorter intensive care unit stay (47 hours v. 73 hours) Shorter hospital stay (6 days vs. 9 days) As many as 27% of patients who need to undergo cardiac surgery have a clinical history of COPD. Overall, the Mount Sinai study results demonstrated that minimally invasive valve surgery is feasible and should be considered for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Mount Sinai Medical Center’s study can be found in the European Journal of CardioThoracic Surgery (2012, pg. 648-652): Outcomes of Minimally Invasive Valve Surgery in Patients With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease For more information on Mount Sinai Medical Center, visit www.msmc.com.. staff, membership committee, Pillar Board and the Board of Governors. Having different teams is the key ingredient: this creates such a healthy, competitive spirit and great comradery amongst the team members. Even greater are the relationships made from the teams! Well, evidently we have great news for the first month. We are only one month into a three month drive and are already 80% there. This is a testament to the great things that this Chamber does, and I encourage everyone to get involved and experience the power of membership.

Holiday Styling Tips BY DANI BERNSTEIN
The holidays are here, and we are all wondering how to look our best. Meeting someone special’s parents for the first time? Want to look fabulous in family photos? How are you going to wear your hair to change it up for the season? I’ve got it all covered, from hair, to makeup, to accessories. If you’re looking to spice up your look with something new, then try a sexy fringe this fall. It is the perfect season here in Miami to experiment with bangs, since you get four months of great weather to grow it out if you regret it! Buying gifts for everyone but yourself is a bad Idea! Buy extensions for a fresh start to the new year and get the longer thicker hair you have always wanted. This holiday season, just as importantly as giving back, let’s not forget to treat ourselves! If you are loving your haircut, try a warm rich new tone to your hair color instead. This fall season, coppers and golds are in! If you love your hair and don’t want to change it at all let’s talk make up. Try a bright lip, a great pick is the Aveda Limited Edition Wild Fuchsia Smoothing Lip Color from the 2012 Fall/Winter Collection. Another personal favorite from the Aveda line is the Rose Blossom Cheek Color. Applying at the upper portion of the cheekbone will give you a pop of color everyone will notice. Short on time? By using three eye shadow shades, you can create a soft smoky
look that no one will forget at this year’s holiday party. 1) Apply lighter color to upper lid and below eyebrow. 2) Apply mid color to the crease of eye, below the orbital bone. 3) Apply darker color with angled brush to upper and lower lash line. 4) Finish by curling lashes and add mascara on the top and bottom. (add liner for more dramatic look/night time event). However, let’s all remember what the main goal is when we apply makeup. We are trying to enhance our natural beauty, not cover it up! That’s why it is so important to find the correct shade of make up for your face. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when at the salon or store. Be playful and creative with your colors: it will make you look and feel young and vibrant. Just remember to choose eye, lip and cheek colors to compliment your skin, eyes and hair. The best advice I can give is to go online and do some research. Choose three pictures that represent the signature look that you are trying to achieve. When you see your stylist, show them the pictures to get an educated opinion on if it will work for you, and in-depth instructions on how to achieve the look. We are here for you, so use us! When it comes to what you wear, I can’t tell you how many times I have spotted fashion victims on the beach guilty of overdoing it. So this Fall/Winter, just choose one statement piece and accessorize around it. It’s the beach: keep it simple!

Italian Style and Design here in Miami Founded in 2000 by Pino Bisazza, expert art lover and successful businessman in the mosaic sector, Trend, with worldwide headquarters in Vicenza, Italy and U.S. headquarters in Miramar, Florida, is a global manufacturer of precious materials such as glass, enamels and gold mosaic, engineered glass, quartz and granite surfaces. Trend is firmly rooted in the artistic integrity of its Venetian glass foundry, the Angelo Orsoni Furnace. These centuries-old methods and materials take their place alongside the most advanced production at Trend’s manufacturing facility in Sebring, Florida, which provides engineered agglomerates to its discriminating network of dealers and its growing international franchise system of Granite Transformations showrooms In 2005, the Miami Granite Transformations showroom opened, providing residents and businesses in the South Florida market access to Trend products, specifically focused on serving those with Miami or South Beach real estate. One popular example of Trend’s work is the Spear Building, located at Aqua on Allison Island. Aqua on Allison Island is a neighborhood with mid-rise condos and houses, located on an 8.5 acre private island in Miami Beach. In 2003, Trend was brought in to design the façade of the Spear condo building, the sec-
ond mid-rise when entering the island. Although various architects were brought on to design different parts of the building, one common link is that all condos have magnificent views of the water. For this reason, Trend worked with the exterior designer to create a design inspired by rippling waves in a calm ocean sunrise. Trend used various colors from its line including Vitreo, Brillante and Shining to re-create this
motion. A total of 14,055 square foot of glass mosaic sheets were numbered so they could be placed in an exact position, with the proper orientation upon installation. In the busy decade since its founding in 2000, Trend is currently distributing
more than 16 million square feet of glass mosaic tile and more than 8 million square feet of agglomerate surfaces per year. The leadership of Trend Group has worked to assure that the company’s commercial soul is shaped by a deep commitment to environmental concerns and cultural vibrancy. On the one hand, Trend actively supports the contemporary art world, is a leading member of the Intrapresae Collezione Guggenheim Association, and funds the biannual Orsoni Prize for International Mosaic Art. On the other, the company moved early and aggressively to reduce the ecological impact of its processes and products. Production is designed to consume fewer raw materials and energy resources, to recycle otherwise wasted materials, and to increase the natural durability of its inventive applications. Trend is available for all commercial projects, small and large.

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS WINS THE BROAD PRIZE Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) recently was named the winner of The Broad Prize for Urban Education, an annual award that honors urban school districts in the nation that make the greatest progress in raising student achievement. M-DCPS had been recognized as a finalist for the prize a total of five times. The win demonstrates that consistency in goals brings success in life. M-DCPS is a model of success because every student is offered an opportunity to succeed. While it may be difficult to sustain such high levels of achievement, the District will always strive to achieve greater things for our students and community. As a result of the Board’s leadership and the Superintendent’s outstanding management skills, our school district has regained the trust of our community under very difficult economic circumstances. The Broad Prize honors urban school districts that demonstrate the greatest overall performance and improvement in student achievement while reducing the achievement gaps among ethnic groups and between high and low income students. Although 91 percent of M-DCPS students are minority, and nearly three-quarters live in poverty, with 21 percent still learning English, the performance of the District’s African-American and Hispanic students stands out when compared to those in similar districts across the state and nation. The
percentage of our students taking the ACT exam between 2008 and 2011 increased faster than most of their counterparts in urban districts across the nation. Graduation rates for African-American and Hispanic students rose by 14 percentage points. M-DCPS students have outperformed students from many major U.S. cities in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) Trial Urban District Assessment (TUDA) in science, mathematics and reading. The positive results are a testament of the District’s concentrated and bold approach to reading instruction, including summer reading camps; reading interventions in elementary, middle, and senior high schools, as well as an emphasis on reading across disciplines; a focus on guiding middle school students to advanced-level classes, which increases the pipeline to Advanced Placement courses at the high school level; extended learning opportunities through the Links to Learning program, and the Superintendent’s Success Academy. As the 2012 Broad Prize winner, the District will receive $550,000 in college scholarships for graduating seniors. Other finalists each will receive $150,000 in scholarships. The District’s success will boost the mission of uniting our community in support of our schools, which are the repositories of success for students both academically and professionally.

‘Case Solved!’ with Crossroads Investigations The highly effective detective agency BY BARI AUERBACH
Imagine being able to harness the expertise of investigative professionals formerly with the CIA, White House National Security Council, the U.S. Department of State, the the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force. Our Mission: To proactively enrich and elevate the importance and success of arts and culture within the City of Miami Beach.
ART CONFAB ‘Focusing on the Basics...’ Question & Answer session with Jeff Lawson Jeff Lawson, producer of art fairs, sat down with me to discuss his latest creation: the launch of UNTITLED, our first beachfront art fair and a new take on the art fair model. SM: There is great buzz in the air about UNTITLED. Tell me how this fair grew from your original intent to what we’ll see during Art Basel week? JL: Well, for years we have been thinking about it and finally saw an opportunity about two years ago. The overall artistic direction went to Omar LopezChahoud, who hand-selected about 45 galleries. SM: This art fair model is different– seems like a good collective came together…tell me how that happened. JL: We were all in a dialogue together. We saw the show as a very cohesive, very specific, heavily edited one…Omar took care of the selection process, K/R (Architectural Firm) created the space. SM: With previous art fairs and especially now with UNTITLED., what do you see as the one key success factor?” JL: It’s as simple as paying attention to the Art. I think in order to stand out you have to go back to basics focusing on great art and great architecture.
SM: I like that! But what took us so long? Why hasn’t this happened already?! JL: Ha! …not sure. SM: Were there any obstacles in bringing an art fair like this to the city and more specifically to the actual beach?! JL: We are dealing with more factors this time but the city has been incredibly supportive. Ocean Drive Association has been awesome. Jerry Libbin, Alan Randolph and everyone. It’s been a real delight. SM: Will the public sense a theme to this show? JL: Definitely. Yes. But the full artistic control was given over to Omar so that’s all I will say. We gave him tools….and yes we had a collective vision but it’s truly Omar and his vision. And K&R too-I really give them credit! SM: I can tell you really respect K/R’s aesthetic—tell us why K/R was so pivotal to this project? JL: Simply speaking, they really understand the art business. In addition they have revolutionized how a temporary structure is built. SM: What can we expect from you in the future? JL: I plan to start working on the format for 2013 but I don’t have a specific agenda yet.
JEFF LAWSON
SM: In other words, your plans are to keep it fresh? JL: That’s the goal! SM: I know you started construction today, what’s your gut feeling at this very moment? JL: Really excited...all the way from the city to the collectors to galleries to artists and to Omar-- everybody feels that they are doing something interesting. We look forward to many more years. I feel confident that we put together something unique and impactful.

Wearable Art and Luxury Costuming Collection a r t i n sp i r e s fa s h i o n Paradox Designs is pleased to introduce its latest foray into the art and fashion industry, a Wearable Art and Luxury Costuming Collection for artists, collectors and festival goers. This new venture is the brainchild of owner and sole proprietor of Paradox Designs, Bridgette Morphew. As an avid collector of wearable art and a known fixture at many art and music festivals she saw the need for something new in fashion, and special event costuming. The vision of this project is a platform for artists to showcase their wearable art. The line will include art pieces commissioned especially for this new collection, as well as pieces that have been handpicked because of their rarity and artistry. Artists that have produced artwear to Madonna, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, and many other celebrities will be creating a capsule collection for this new Paradox Designs Wearable Art Collective.
This concept belongs to Bridgette Morphew, who started Paradox Designs eight years ago, inspired by her love of amazing details from fashion history that are sometimes forgotten. She opened the doors of Paradox Designs, the leading vintage design studio in New York City, with one goal: to “inspire fashion,” as she herself put it. After building a network of the best designers in New York, she has expanded to Paris, London, Milan, Sydney and every other fashion capital with a team of experts and buyers shopping year-round to source the most unique vintage items from every fashion era. With the intention of bringing the wearable fashion world into the world of art, this new collection will be showcased at a pre-launch party this December in Miami during Art Basel, in conjunction with many high profile events during the week. Sure to be a unique shopping and gallery experi-
ence, this exhibit will have incredible artworks of Adam Pollina, Dina Knapp, Erik Halley, Kate Raudenbush, Azusa Dannohara, Londa Bead, Cedric Claquieze, Masha Pekurovsky, and others. This new endeavor is sure to reap success, with the power of a worldwide team of buyers, stylists, and agents behind it. This collection will be the new direction for the studio - that of innovative, one of a kind wearable art that mixes the techniques and structure of fashion with the abstract beauty of art. Bigfoot Sculpture Seeks Permanent Footprint in Miami International sculptor promotes cultural awareness and tolerance through his art BY IDAN ZARESKI
One of the first big events of the art season on Miami Beach will take place on November 27th when the Bigfoot sculpture is unveiled at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden to visitors and media. Immersed in the natural pond at the entrance of the Gardens, artist Idan Zareski’s dazzling and impactful Bigfoot sculpture dramatically greets every visitor to the Garden. A “world traveler,” Bigfoot, Zareski says, was created as a clarion call for hope and unity around the world. To date, the Bigfoot sculpture has been experienced by art lovers on three continents but hopes to make its permanent home on Miami Beach. Zareski’s Bigfoot sculpture was born out of his passion for encouraging cultural awareness and tolerance around the globe, “Bigfoot’s huge feet are like the roots of our past, our anchor to this small fragile Earth; reminding us that we are all from the same small planet. His relaxed attitude and the appearance of contemplation that emanate from Bigfoot is a testimony that no matter our race or color, where we live and who we are, we are all an intrinsic element of the planet.” Bigfoot’s current home is the Miami Beach Botanical Garden (MBBG) but the sculpture is seeking a permanent home at a private residence, public venue or cultural/governmental institution. The Garden often serves as a venue for visual and performing arts and is a popular tourist destination. The Garden creates environmental education programs for children and adults, preserves green space and promotes green living. Cindy Brown, the newly appointed Executive Director of the MBBG, is an advocate of the sculpture and says its current presence at the Garden is a boon for Beach residents, “the collaboration between Bigfoot and the MBBG works well together, and benefits visitors, sponsors and residents of Miami Beach,” says Brown. Bigfoot’s team is actively working with art consultants and private entities to raise awareness about the sculpture and market it to art enthusiasts. To find out more, con-

Wolfsonian exhibit Describing Labor: A New Dialogue Esther ShalevGerz
BY SONIA MELAMED
One a recent afternoon in November, I sat down with Matthew Abess, assistant curator at The Wolfsonian museum, hoping to better understand their new exhibit, Describing Labor. Like the opening of a Russian doll set, the show was revealed to me slowly and successively, with meaning resting inside of meaning. Through the help of an unfolding dialogue, the artist, Esther Shalev-Gerz, invites us to explore the bond between an experience and the telling one gives to that experience. At first, the idea that an artist would do rigorous research on the depiction of the working figure from the late nineteenth century to the Great Depression and through both World Wars (and why that portrayal later receded from our collective consciousness) seemed substantive enough for an art exhibit. In fact, the museum’s art collection on the subject is so extensive– from an Arthur Waagen bronze sculpture in 1889 to a Harry Sternberg silkscreen from the 1930’s- I felt content to bask in the beauty of the art and stop there. However, through new works of video, audio and photography, Describing Labor pushes us to explore the transitional quality of time
Harry Sternberg Steel, 1937, USA. Silkscreen The Wolfsonian– Florida International University, Miami Beach, FL The Mitchell Wolfson, Jr. Collection
and our capacity to see and describe. On that afternoon, like Alice in Wonderland, I felt “curiouser and curiouser!” as I listened to Abess describe the contours of the show. In Describing Labor, the people, places and things “appear partial, pliable and provisional.” Shalev-Gerz brings us an experience that eludes articulation— a visual/audio presentation inside a fundamental question that asks what are we really feeling when confronted with an image? Describing Labor is on view from December 3, 2012 to April 7, 2013 at The Wolfsonian- 1001 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach.

Migguel Anggelo’s Strings + Stories electrified the audience at The New World Center Thursday night in the Sun Trust Pavilion of the New World Center marked the premier of Strings + Stories, a dynamic musical art performance by Migguel Anggelo, presented by David Stark and Jupiter Moons Productions. This was a truly exceptional evening where the artist, backed by an incredible string ensemble, took the audience on an emotional journey through his animated and imaginative personality. Combining pop and poetic songwriting with incredible singing, acting, and dancing, the sold out audience was brought to their feet for a 10 minute standing ovation at the conclusion of the performance. This audience knows quality, too, as it was filled with such cultural notables as Bonnie Clearwater (Director of Museum of Contemporary Art), Cathy Leff (Director of The Wolfsonian-FIU), Claudio Corsi (Grammy nominated singer/songwriter), Michele Oka Doner (artist and designer), Elaiza Irizarry (Executive Director of the Miami Theater Center), and Christopher Coleman (Internationally recognized interior designer). At age 13, this Venezuelan actor, singer, and dancer made his stage debut as Pinocchio in the Venezuelan tour of the original Broadway musical Pinocchio directed by Levy Russell. He went on to perform in the musical Fedora also directed by Russell; Grupo Theja’s XL – 1953; Javier Vidal’s Marilyn; The Last Passion; Tierra Magica Compania’s Playing Broadway; and starred as the young Nick in the Latin American tour of FAME, The Musical. He trained for eleven years in classical ballet and studied opera at The Conservatory of Music in Cologne, Germany. Migguel Anggelo’s training clearly delivered this triumphant evening, and his ability to hit such a range of notes – low and high made it hard to believe that all of them were sung by the same man. The amount of energy delivered by each individual on the stage was simply magical. The string ensemble seemed to feed off of Migguel’s animated personality, which brought the passion of each song to the next level. The back-up singers created a feeling of intimacy and added an element of theatrics while they danced cheek to cheek to the artist’s rendition of the classic bolero “Piensa En Mi.” With the use of props and costumes,

Migguel transformed and embodied his song’s characters and the ensemble joined in on this transformation with every pluck, strum, and tap of their instrument. One of the evening’s highlights, Migguel’s cover of Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” a lilting, reinterpretation of longing was delivered with such passion that the audience seemed to slowly snuggle up to that special someone they arrived with. Migguel’s performance of his song “Donde Estará Matisse?” was as charming live as it is in his music video. The audience was able to join Migguel in his tale of encounters with artists such as Rembrandt, Cézanne, and Édith Piaf. Strings + Stories was a delight to watch and left the audience hoping that this performance marks more to come. Migguel Anggelo is certainly one to watch!

The $outh Florida Gaming Repor t Feedback Wanted BY ISADORE HAVENICK
For over a year now I have been trying to inform residents of Miami Beach about the goings on in the South Florida gaming arena. Much has happened and there is much more to come. The annual “push” for more gaming will be a topic for discussion at the upcoming legislative session. As a beach resident I share the concerns of other’s as to the impact additional gaming will have on us. Will a land based casino in Miami have a devastating effect upon our busi-
ness community? Are we better off with gaming on the Beach? Can we fight off all the mega-casino operators with an eye on Miami? It is expected the 2013 legislature will appoint a gaming panel to study the current situation statewide and make recommendations to the full legislature. The most important information I would like to solicit from you are your opinions. Please send me your comments on gaming and any other related topics to miamibeachgaming@gmail.com . What truly matters most is what the residents and business owners feel will enhance the lifestyle and the viability of living and working on Miami Beach. The two go hand in hand. I look forward to reading your observations and answering any questions you might have.

Barton G. Celebrates 10th Anniversary
Miami Beach is known for its “hidden treasures” and the location of one of the best was easy to spot last week, as hundreds of foodies, notables, celebs and others crowded into the West Avenue location of “Barton G. The Restaurant” to celebrate owner Barton G. Weiss’s 10th anniversary, and also tour his new party venue, “UpTop at Barton G.,” an elaborate terrace overlooking the garden at his signature spot. But the big news is that Weiss is opening a new similarly named restaurant in Los Angeles in January, bringing the number of restaurants to four. The West Coast “Barton G.” will join the Miami Beach location, along with Prelude by Barton G. in the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, and the Dining Room at the Villa (formerly the Versace Mansion). Also at the event, City of Miami Beach Commissioner Michael Gongora presented Weiss with a proclamation, showing the city’s appreciation for his culinary, hotelier and event wizardry.

Mount Sinai to host free webinar on preventive treatment for Alzheimer’s disease The Wien Center for Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders at Mount Sinai Medical Center will host a free, interactive webinar to discuss preventive treatments for Alzheimer’s disease. The online symposium will take place on Friday, November 30th at 1:00PM. The forum should be of special interest to individuals who are at risk of developing Alzheimer’s or who have family members with memory-related concerns. The webinar will feature a panel discussion with three international experts in Alzheimer’s disease: Dr. Jessica Langbaum, research scientist with the Banner Alzheimer’s Institute and Associate Director of the Alzheimer’s Prevention Initiative; Dr. Andy Saykin, Director of Indiana University’s Center for Neuroimaging; and Dr. Susan Landau, research scientist at the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute at the University of California, Berkeley. The experts will discuss symptoms of Alzheimer’s, why effective treatment needs to begin early and clinical trials set to begin in 2013 that will examine prevention of the disease. Participants will also have an opportunity to participate in an ample question and answer session.
Dr. Ranjan Duara, Director of the Mount Sinai Wien Center for Alzheimer’s Disease, will moderate the free webinar on preventive treatments Alzheimer’s disease.
Dr. Ranjan Duara, Director of The Mount Sinai Wien Center for Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders will host and moderate the event. “Part of our discussions at this symposium will be about how we can determine when the disease in its earliest
stages, just like we detect high cholesterol in people’s blood and start treating high cholesterol whether or not patients have any symptoms. The same goes for treating Alzheimer’s early so we can prevent the disease from escalating. “ The webinar is a pre-cursor to the 11th
annual Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) Symposium to be held on Miami Beach in January. International experts in the fields of neurology, neuropsychology, psychiatry, geriatrics and neuropathology will gather to explore risk factors, diagnosis and progression of Alzheimer’s, and aims to provide a forum for new information and indepth discussions about advances in research related to the clinical diagnosis and progression of the disease. Unless ways are found to prevent Alzheimer’s disease or delay its onset, it is projected that 13 million people in the U.S. will have Alzheimer’s Disease by 2050. Since the development of criteria for the disease twenty-five years ago, major advances in our understanding of the biology and early clinical features of Alzheimer’s have led to improvement in clinical assessments which have enabled clinicians to diagnose an earlier stage of the illness. To register for this free webinar taking place at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 30th, visit www.mcisymposium.org/webinar. 42nd Annual Miami International Auto Show Introduces New Features to Big Crowds The Miami International Auto Show (MIAS) has been a November tradition here in South Florida for more than 40 years, giving car enthusiasts a first look at the newest models of many of the top manufacturers. Previously named the South Florida International Auto Show, it will be known going forward as the Miami International Auto Show. The new name was just a small part of all the changes and innovations that show organizers introduced at this year’s version. While there were still plenty of new car models and favorite brands represented at this year’s show, there was also a newer blend of technology, education and exhibits with models that represent car owners’ specific lifestyles and preferences. One of the biggest changes that attendees noticed while walking through the event was the emphasis put on technology and social interaction. For the first time, MIAS gave patrons an opportunity to interact with the show and other patrons via Twitter and Instagram while relaxing and charging their phones in the Social Media Lounge. “The Social Media Lounge illustrates our special attention to technology, video content and social media this year,” said Rick Baker, Auto Show Manager. “We’ve modernized the look of the show, provided digital floor plans, installed Twitter screens all over and otherwise enabled the use of smart devices among visitors who get scattered. It’s communication on another level.” MIAS also put a focus on the fast-grow-
The Miami Beach International Auto Show introduced several new elements during this year’s event. Pictured above is the entrance to the Eco Experience, a portion of the show focused on some of the latest alternative fuel models. Attendees were able to learn more about and even test drive some of these vehicles. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
ing environmentally conscious segment of the Auto Industry with the introduction of the Eco Experience exhibit. Alternative fuel vehicles have become a bigger focus and more affordable option for consumers during the last few years and those interested in these vehicles were able to get a closer look and take a ride in some of the best electric vehicles the industry has to offer. MIAS also made it convenient for current owners of EV cars by offering free parking and charging stations. South Florida, with its year-round warm weather, is a perfect location to own and
enjoy a convertible. With that in mind, MIAS created a special exhibit called Topless in Miami that showcased many of the best convertible models available today, in a bright and sunny beach themed setting distinct to South Florida. Attendees were able to get up close to convertibles such as the Mercedes SLS AMG Roadster, the 500C Gucci Edition Fiat, and the XKRS Italian Racing Jaguar, just to name a few. Fans of classic models were not disappointed either. MIAS also introduced the Havana Classics display at this year’s event. The Havana Classics section fea-
tured a unique group of antique cars from the 1950s. The featured car in this nostalgic exhibit was a 1956 Chrysler Windsor Newport but included many other favorite classics that celebrated the Cuban culture that is such a big part of South Florida. The Miami International Auto Show is the first major auto exhibition of the season and is produced by the South Florida Automobile Dealers Association, a fourcounty group of 190 new car dealers from The Keys to the Palm Beaches. The 43rd edition of the Miami International Auto Show will be held November 8-17, 2013.
