U

sing information developed by the U.S. Department of Commerce Bureau of Economic Analysis, Mount Sinai Medical Center was responsible for driving an estimated $1.3 billion into the local economy. Mount Sinai’s capital and operational investments increase local expenditures by both individual households and related industries. With more than 3,000 employees, Mount Sinai provides salaries and wages in excess of $200 million and is Miami Beach’s largest employer and the 11th largest private employer in Miami-Dade County. This year alone, the hospital will expend more than $20 million in capital investments to strengthen its facilities and advance technology. Mount Sinai also is moving forward in its transition from paper-based medical records to an Electronic Health Record (EHR) system. This $60 million multiyear project will use the power of information technology to enhance patient care and safety. “Hospitals play a significant role in the

Letter from the Chair BY JASON LOEB

“A rising tide lifts all boats” has always been a favorite mantra of mine. John F. Kennedy coined the phrase in a 1963 speech, and the proverb has echoed ever since as we’ve endured waves of thriving and challenging economies. While its various interpretations have been praised by some and criticized by others, I believe the key to individual success indeed lies in a balanced, supportive community. We’re all business people, but we’re also residents striving for a work-life balance. As professionals, we aim to provide our customers a superior product and experience. In turn, we expect the same in our own daily life events. A desirable society relies upon a cohesive collaboration of organizations, from grocery store trips to tourism offerings. The Chamber is about bringing companies together to meet one another, but to also work together in creating opportunities and experiences unique to this community. Miami Beach boasts a glamorous history and remains high on the local, national and international radar, in part because it’s always evolving. Most recently, this island hotspot has transformed into a well-rounded business, entertainment and cultural mecca with its landmark structures like the Miami Beach Convention Center, New World Symphony Hall and Mount Sinai Medical Center, as well as key events such as Art Basel Miami Beach, Miami Beach International Fashion Week and (fittingly) Miami International Boat Show. Each has grown in great magni-

health care mission and managing our resources, we are able to remain financially stable and make a significant contribution to our community.” In 2009, Mount Sinai provided more than $80 million in charitable and uncompensated care for the uninsured and underinsured. Mount Sinai is reaching out to the community every day to improve public health by providing 4,000 free health screenings, responding to urgent health care needs, such as the H1N1 influenza outbreak, and promoting health education. As a comprehensive academic and research institution, Mount Sinai trains more than 160 residents and fellows in 18 different medical specialties. In cardiology, Mount Sinai’s partnership with New York’s Columbia University provides expanded faculty and learning opportunities. Mount Sinai’s undergraduate medical education program supports more than 325 students from a number of medical schools, including the University of Miami, Florida International University and Nova Southeastern University. Mount Sinai is working to advance medical science and receives funding from the National Institutes of Health to support research in cardiology, oncology, pulmonary, and Alzheimer’s Disease. As Miami Beach’s only hospital, Mount

Sinai’s emergency room is a critical part of the community’s health care infrastructure. Working closely with Fire Rescue, Mount Sinai’s emergency room is backed by the most active cardiac program in South Florida. Part of Miami-Dade’s STEMI (STsegment Elevation Myocardial Infarction) hospital network, Mount Sinai treats heart attack patients within minutes upon arrival. The hospital received accreditation as a certified Emergency Chest Pain Center, one of only two such hospitals in Miami-Dade to achieve this milestone. Mount Sinai has achieved accreditation as a Comprehensive Stroke Center, one of only 16 hospitals in the entire state with this level of care. Using advanced imaging and groundbreaking catheterization techniques, neurointerventional radiologists are able to access tiny, distal veins in the brain and restore blood flow. Mount Sinai has also forged unique collaborative programs with Miami Beach Community Health Centers and Borinquen Health Care Center to assist underserved mothers who cannot afford prenatal and maternal services. Mount Sinai’s Level III Neonatal Intensive Care provides the most advanced care available for high risk deliveries. Mount Sinai’s positive impact is realized in both better physical and economic health for the Miami Beach community and beyond. tude and prestige, fulfilling what a wellheeled traveler values in a global destination and what a resident enjoys in their own backyard. This is all not without relationships. As Miami Beach Chamber members, we have access to a great network and can build upon each other’s achievements. Take Miami Beach Chamber 2010 Annual Meeting at the Ritz-Carlton South Beach. A native of the Miami Beach community, Jason started his career with a few selfservice coin Laundromats 11 years ago. Through Sudsies Dry Cleaners & Laundry, he has revolutionized home pickup and delivery service for dry cleaners in South Florida and now boasts a fleet of vans servicing all of Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. He has implemented his expertise in management and marketing to create an innovative business model and has lent that expertise and leadership to the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce over the past fourteen years. Jason continues to be very involved in the South Florida community as he currently sits on the Executive Committee for Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation, where he is also a Trustee and a nine year member of EO. He

formerly held positions as the President of BNI Miami Beach, Chairman for the City of Miami Beach Zoning Board and Chairman of the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce Pillar Board of Trustees. Jason also served three years on the City of Miami Beach Community Development Advisory Board. “I feel honored at having been chosen for this position by my peers,” says Jason Loeb. “The Chamber is near and dear to my heart and I’m looking forward to leading this organization and its members to a bright and successful future on Miami Beach.” In addition, the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce has put together an outstanding group of industry professionals to lead the organization into 2011. The 2010-2011 Board of Governors is comprised of individuals from a wide variety of businesses in South Florida and across the globe and are dedicated to bringing together local and regional business leaders to enhance business development, to nurture personal and professional relationships, to facilitate the exchange of commerce between members, and to preserve the rich heritage of the dynamic business community that exists in and around Miami and Miami Beach.

Lips is a partner with the Miami Beach accounting firm of Gerson Preston Robinson & Company handling complex international and local tax matters and financial reporting for significant clients from all over the U.S., South America and throughout the world. Loved by his partners and staff, Lips has served both the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce and the local community as a dynamic leader and friend through his commitment to giving back. Lips has served on various Miami Beach government boards and has been a prominent fundraiser and member of the Board of Trustees at Mount Sinai Medical Center, Miami Beach’s largest employer and South Florida’s premier medical center. “Alan continues the rich tradition of his firm in giving back to his community. As a Chamber Board member, he consistently displayed perseverance, vision and unbridled support in moving the Chamber’s mission forward. Over the years he has balanced his Board responsibilities with his personal abilities to lead, mentor and

befriend Chamber members in to future leaders”, stated Michael Milberg, Executive Director of the Mount Sinai Medical Center Foundation and Past Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce Chair. Lips’ senior partner, Gary Gerson, CPA, is no stranger to the Miami Beach Chamber and has been a prominent leader in our community for many years. Gerson started the GPR accounting firm on Miami Beach in 1959 as a small accounting office and never looked back. Today the firm has three offices with locations in Miami Beach, Brickell and Boca Raton, and has close to 100 employees. In 1997, Gerson was also recognized by the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce for his impact on our local community. His leadership over the years has been extensive including service as the Chairman of the Board of Mount Sinai Medical Center during the 1990’s. The University of Florida named its accounting school, Gary R. Gerson Hall, the only free standing accounting school at a major university in the world. The Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce is proud to have people like Alan Lips and Gary Gerson as contributing members of the Chamber and the community as a whole. Alan will be presented the James McDonnell Award at the Chamber’s Champions of Business Luncheon in January.

Miami Beach High Rock Ensemble: Still Rockin’ the Planet BY JESSE KIRKPATRICK

Senior at Miami Beach Senior High School Under the direction of Doug Burris, the Miami Beach High Rock Ensemble continues to rock 38 years after its establishment in 1972. Combining the experience of senior members and the fresh new talent picked up during the 2010 auditions, the Rock Ensemble is better than ever, and off to a quick start. Just take a look at its recent performances. The group rocked out at “Ability Explosion”, an accessibility awareness event on Miami Beach on October 19th, and traveled up north two days later to perform for the grand opening of SOBE’s own Lime Fresh Mexican Grill in Orlando. Band bookers know by now that any generation of Rock Ensemble can be hired sight unseen. This is because it is well known that Burris takes his role seriously; slackers need not apply. Mr. Burris maintains the reputation of the Rock Ensemble through an incredibly selective audition process, during which prospective members must demonstrate not only instrumental or vocal proficiency, but also a good stage presence and strong character. The result is a group of musicians who will never complain when rehearsals continue late into the night and will practice on their own for hours a day. Though no one can be a member for

more than 4 years, each generation of musicians, engineers and support staff increases the respectability of an already well-established band. This is a situation from which students benefit greatly. Not only are they given the opportunity to be a part of a historically rich band, but members pick up on where 38 yearsworth of musicians have left off. Over the years, the group has procured some regular gigs: Tim Tierney’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration, GRAMMY Career Day, the Bay Harbor Picnic, and countless Miami Beach Senior High school functions. Without the strong history of the Rock Ensemble behind them, members would never have the opportunity to perform at such diverse high-profile venues. Let alone as high school students. As a keyboardist and vocalist for the band myself, I can say that the Rock Ensemble rocks! With a hot new set list, including such classic favorites as The Rolling Stones’ “Sympathy for the Devil” and Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin,” the group appeals especially to the classic at heart. However, those who prefer more modern tunes can groove to such recent hits as KT Tunstall’s “Suddenly I See” and Taylor Swift’s “You Belong with Me”. The Rock Ensemble will be performing at the Miami Music Festival at the Bayfront Amphitheater on November 13th at 12 pm. Go to http://www.rockensemble.com/ and click under “Upcoming Concerts” for more information. You don’t want to miss it!

COMMISSIONER’S CORNER BY COMMISSIONER JERRY LIBBIN

For the past two years, I have had the privilege of working with the American Legion Miami Beach Post 85 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3559 to put together our annual Miami Beach Veterans Day Parade and Picnic to honor those who have bravely fought for our country. Last year, the parade included 1,400 participants from 78 businesses, organizations, associations, and schools. We were energized by the many supporters who came out to cheer on our marchers and appreciated the support for our local veterans. This year, our team is working hard to exceed the current expectations. It has been my pleasure to put forth my

time and effort to pay homage to such a worthy cause, but I believe that this should be done as an effort from the entire City of Miami Beach. With the support of my fellow Commissioners, I hope we focus on the mission of the parade and stand together as a city behind our veterans. Just like July 4th, Veterans Day is a day of national celebration and our city should be proud to embrace it and stand as a sponsor of such a worthwhile event. On Thursday, November 11, 2010, this year’s parade will begin at 17th and Washington Avenue at 9:00 in the morning. For those of you who may be interested in marching, please contact me at 305-389-0710. For those interested in watching the parade, gather along the west side of Washington Avenue between Lincoln Road and 11th Street for the best viewing locations. I encourage everyone to come out and honor our Veterans on November 11th.

The VCA: Improving the Miami Beach Experience BY ELSIE HOWARD

Chairman of the Visitor and Convention Authority The Miami Beach Visitors and Convention Authority has been promoting tourism in Miami Beach since 1967, when it was created by Chapter 67-930 of the Laws of Florida and Sections 102-246 through, and including 102-254 of the Code of Miami Beach. The VCA is funded directly through resort taxes, as an independent tourism promotion agency. VCA members are volunteers who are nominated by the Miami Beach Commission and include: Steve Adkins, Debbie Castillo, , Jacque Hertz, Elsie Howard, Jeff Lehman, Micky Steinberg, Keith Menin. Recent past members include Steven Haas, Sidney Goldin, Leslie Zigel, Wendy Hart, and Diego Lowenstein. Members represent the hospitality industry and the community at large. Tourists who visit Miami Beach pay resort taxes – bed taxes, food and beverage taxes as well. The VCA only receives revenue that is generated by tourist taxes, so the VCA invests heavily in events that bring visitors — “heads in beds” — reinvesting in the future of tourism. The VCA receives 5% of the 2% of these resort taxes; The City of Miami Beach retains the rest. IN 200910, the VCA’S investment of $1 million brought over $34 million directly to the City of Miami Beach budget. Many of the events have a special discounted rate for Miami Beach Residents. Last year VCA sponsored 1383 events, created 2377 jobs, filled 28,525 hotel rooms, engaged 4,852,100 overnight visitors, at an average daily hotel rate of $184.10, gen-

erated over 27 billion media impressions and generated over one billion viewers on network and cable television. More than 77, 857 people attended VCA sponsored events; 34 per cent of those attending events were residents, 23 percent were regional visitors and 43 percent were visitors. In good tourist years and in off-years, the VCA has remained committed to investing its budget wisely—in events , yes, but also in brand promotion of the Miami Beach legend — advertising Miami Beach gets for free. And the millions of dollars that result from bed tax revenue goes directly to the bottom line of the City’s budget – holding taxes down, and paying for vital city services. Grants often begin as seed money to first-time events that have the potential to grow, with VCA also providing professional support and advice, building partnerships that are offered to all applicants. The VCA is often “the funding arm of the CMB,” supporting transformative major events and working to keep them here — including Art Basel. Other events, programs and projects launched by the VCA include the Miami Beach way finding signage, local customer service training for the hospitality industry, South Beach Wine and Food, the ING Marathon, Funkshion – Miami Beach Fashion Week, Miami Beach Polo Championships, Miami Beach September Sports Series, South Beach Comedy Festival and ING Marathon. A list of

VCA supported events and projects also includes the Boat Show, Nautica South Beach Triathlon, SwimShow, World Music Conference and Design Miami to name a few. The VCA’s support makes a critical difference for community projects and quality of life programs for residents, including the Chamber of Commerce Guest services, the Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, The Latin Chamber, Shane Watersports, The Miami Beach Police department. The many projects made possible by the VCA in 2009 include the Art Deco art exhibit in MIA, the Egyptian gallery at Bass, Sleepless Nights, the 25/7 Marketing campaign and the essay contests for Miami Beach students. For the past ten years, the VCA annually writes and distributes to city leadership an extensive Program of Work, including a written review and breakdown of all grants funded, as well as an analysis of success and an audited financial statement. It is available to the public, along with grant requirements, on the VCA website The VCA holds an annual strategic planning retreat, reviewing grant format, issues and opportunities and priorities for the year ahead. The VCA’s budget projection is provided by the City and is a projection for the year ahead. Of course, when the VCA funds grants, it is very cautious and fiscally responsible in order to cover the funding of grants outstanding. The VCA only funds grants upon completion, after the

delivery of receipts and audited accounts from the grant recipients. Of course the Board continues to be vigilant, concerned about global economic conditions, possible flight disruptions, weather (those dreaded storms), crime and terrorism. All meetings are held “in the sunshine” and the VCA welcomes city residents and leaders at all meetings, which are ‘noticed’ in the newspaper. The VCA ‘s Board members as well as executive Director, Grisette Roque Marcos, and Eileen de la Cuesta, who staff VCA activities, also provide leadership in community collaborations – including the City , the MB Police Department, the Chambers of Commerce, Shane Watersports, the CAC , the Hotel & Restaurant Association, the MB Convention Center, the Chamber of Commerce, the Miami Beach hospitality high school programs and the marketing committee of the GMCVB.. Working as a team, together with community leaders, the VCA provides leadership and support for the Mayor’s Blue Ribbon Task Force on Tourism, established to take action in the face of a tourism economic slowdown. This Taskforce generated the InCard, the Shop Miami Beach Banners, the “For your protection” signage, the beautification of the east end of Lincoln Road, the essay contest for Miami Beach schoolchildren and more. Members and staff of the Miami Beach VCA are proud of their sustained collaborative vision, fiscal responsibility, strategic commitment, community involvement and city leadership, their public service that continues to make a major difference in the quality of life for residents and visitors to one of the world’s most fabulous cities.

LEADERSHIP SPOTLIGHT

Advocacy Council Chairman

AARON TANDY

Like a number of our community leaders, Aaron Tandy is a transplant to Miami Beach, having only arrived in South Florida twelve years ago from New York. However, given the number of hours Aaron devotes to improving Miami Beach and the active connections he has made, some people could be forgiven for thinking that he was a life-long resident. In his short time, Aaron has distinguished himself as an active resident of the Beach, participating most recently on the Mayor’s Blue Ribbon Task Force to

improve the community and spearheading the Chamber of Commerce’s discussions with the Florida Department of Transportation regarding changes to be made to major projects with the potential to impact the Beach. Recently Aaron was recognized for his community involvement with the James McDonnell Award from the Chamber of Chamber of Commerce, recognizing his active participation as a member of the Executive Board and Board of Governors over the past five years. With the strong support and backing of his partners at the lawfirm of Gunster Yoakley & Stewart, P.A., where he practices complex commercial litigation out of their Miami office, Aaron has devoted time to a number of community organizations while also being a father to three school age children (Harrison, Jonathon and Catherine) and a devoted husband to Heidi Howard Tandy. Since coming to the Miami office ten years ago, Aaron has steadily garnered a reputation for calm and reasoned counsel among fellow lawyers, as well as bringing insightful and thoughtful solutions to resolving business conflicts. While Aaron enjoys courtroom work, having decided to become a lawyer after reading and watching To Kill a Mocking Bird, he shares Gunster’s philosophy that counsel’s role is to find positive and effective approaches to achieving client goals.

Create a Lasting Legacy for Your Children and Grandchildren BY MICHAEL S. GOLDBERG Senior Vice President, Miami Beach Market Executive Gibraltar Private Bank & Trust

In my role as a Private Banker in Miami Beach, I’ve found that when clients reach a certain age and level of success, their focus begins to shift to their legacy. What will your family look like three, five, even ten generations from now? Will they be connected, competent, compassionate people? Will the wealth you generated still exist to support their dreams? Patriarchs and matriarchs of successful families have an important responsibility to help their children and grandchildren learn how to manage the family wealth well. While this may sound contradictory, studies show that one of the best ways to prevent losing family wealth is to give a certain portion of it away. Aside from the tax benefits, which are substantial, family philanthropy can serve as a structure for teaching children and grandchildren not only the business skills needed to be successful, but also the core values that the family holds dear. According to a recent study on families that have remained successful for four generations past the wealth creator, key characteristics shared by these “legacy families” include: 1) a recognition of their good fortune, and 2) a deep understanding of the responsibility to give back. Children and grandchildren of legacy families are not simply taught, but expected to develop the ability to handle the responsibilities of wealth, effectively use the opportunities

that have been provided to them, and become productive members of their communities. When devising a family philanthropy plan, it is important to involve all generations of the family, especially the little ones. Let them help select charities and, more importantly, help deliver the donation, be it a check, goods, or your time. There are two common vehicles successful families us to manage their giving - Donor Advised Funds and Family Foundations. Both have pros and cons depending upon the dollar amount the family gives each year and the intention of the funds. Like all charitable exercises, the biggest beneficiaries of family philanthropic efforts are the families themselves. With the right people in place, family philanthropy strengthens the family bonds and values in such a manner that research says will better position the family for future success — which is the best legacy any of us can hope to leave. Born and raised in Miami Beach, Mr. Goldberg started his career in 1989 in the Barnett Bank Management Training program. He is an active community leader and serves on the Boards of the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce and Mt. Sinai Medical Center Foundation. He is also a member of the Young Founders of Mt. Sinai Medical Center. He is Chairman of the Pillar Trustee Board of the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce. Gibraltar Private’s Miami Beach Relationship Office is located in the Sheridan Center 400 Arthur Godfrey Road (41st Street), Suite 506. For more information, call (305) 468-4160.

Chamber Delegation Travels to Shanghai to Use Art Deco as Basis for Marketing Campaign Everyone knows that Miami Beach is famous for its Art Deco Architecture. But did you know that Shanghai, China’s most renowned city, has the greatest collection of Art Deco Architecture in Asia? A delegation from the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce led by its President and CEO, Jerry Libbin, recently visited Shanghai to forge new relationships using Art Deco Architecture as a catalyst to attract Chinese tourists. The plan is to bring a photography exhibition comparing the Art Deco Architecture of Shanghai and Miami Beach (currently on display at the Miami International Airport) to Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport, thereby generating additional press and exchanges. Jerry Libbin, who is also a Miami Beach Commissioner said, “By using one of unique assets-our historic architecture-we can create a tale of two cities that is newsworthy.” The Art Deco Architectural exchange is the brainchild of Miami Beach preservationists Don and Nina Worth, who began the program to link the two cities in 2005. In 2007, they worked with Deke Erh, the first freelance photographer in all of China, who grew to treasure the Art Deco buildings of Shanghai and is documenting its ever-changing cityscape. Together they created the photography exhibit “Art Deco in Shanghai and Miami Beach” - 100 large scale photographs (50 of each city) - funded by Goldman Properties, LLC –as part of Art Deco Weekend 2007 themed, “East Meets West: Art Deco From Shanghai to Miami.” A delegation of 23 Chinese administrators, city planners and high level officials, had the opportunity to see and experience how Miami Beach uses the Art Deco historic district as an economic engine generating tourism. We are pleased to report that five years later there are many more “historic plaques” and renovated art deco buildings like the Peace Hotel and districts like Xian Tian Di where old buildings have been retrofitted to create

high end stores and restaurants so successful that to Xian Tian Di is now a verb! Commissioner Libbin originally contributed to this initiative when he led a previous delegation to Shanghai. During this trip, the delegation visited with Deke Erh in their exchange in the fall of 2007, and was able to convince Hutchison Whampoa, a Hong Kong based conglomerate with active real estate interests in Shanghai, to provide partial funding for a book based on the photography exhibit. A true collaboration, “Art Deco in Shanghai and Miami Beach” documents all the magnificent photographs with historical text written by Deke’s partner on 20 books and legendary expatriate, Tess Johnston. Tess led the delegation on a remarkable historical tour through the Jewish section of old Shanghai which culminated at the Jewish Refugees Museum, formerly the Ohel Moishe Synagogue, a truly moving experience. In 2008, the exhibit was shown at the Hutchison Whampoa Art Gallery in Shanghai. Currently, through the efforts of Jerry Libbin, the exhibit is in the North Terminal at Miami International Airport, where it is seen by approximately 50,000 people a day. “Now that we have placed the exhibit in a high traffic location in Miami, we will ask the Chinese to reciprocate and locate the exhibit in Shanghai as well,” said Libbin. While in Shanghai, the delegation met with Chinese officials to discuss cultural exchange and tourism marketing opportunities, toured the extraordinary 2010 World Expo, and traveled to Zhu Jia Jiao, one of Shanghai’s famous “water towns.” Perhaps the biggest booster of this initiative is the Chinese photographer Deke Erh, who

pioneered transforming a dilapidated munitions factory into the Taiking Lu Arts and Crafts District in Shanghai. Erh is a big Art Deco fan and has visited Miami Beach a total of nine times. “Miami Beach and Shanghai, though different in size, have much in common” he says. “They are international cities and have a shared heritage of unique architecture. We should try to grow the bonds between our two cities.” Erh has contacts with the Shanghai Government and at the Pudong International Airport and hopes to bring the exhibit there. Because there are two sets of prints, the exhibit can be displayed simultaneously in Miami Beach and Shanghai, generat-

ing a foundation for additional press. At a meeting at Deke’s gallery, Commissioner Jerry Libbin and George Neary, VP of Cultural Tourism representing the Greater Miami Visitors and Convention Bureau (GMCVB), agreed to work with Deke to develop a proposal for the Mayor of Shanghai. The potential for tourism from China is enormous, noted Rolano Aedo, Senior VP of GMCVB, who also joined the delegation on the trip. China is just beginning to open up for foreign travel, but in addition to a growing number of billionaires, they have a large middle class-almost 400 million people-who would like to travel. While in Shanghai, Aedo and Libbin met with an editor of the Chinese edition of Travel and Leisure Magazine to discuss the initiative. “We are thrilled that Goldman Properties had the foresight to originally sponsor this project and that it has continued to evolve”, said Libbin. “That’s the way we can make progress in Miami Beach, if everyone works together.”

Shanghai, through the eyes of Miami Beach Chamber’s President & CEO, Jerry Libbin, was none other than extraordinary. The goal of the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce is to promote positive business relations with Chamber members and to explore the options the world has to offer. A delegation of twenty-three Miami Beach residents left the sunshine state on a journey en route for the luminous skyline of Shanghai, to seize cultural and business exchange. The itinerary included VIP access to the 2010 World Expo including the pavilions of Germany, Mexico, Israel, China, ‘Unpack London’, and the U.S.A., all of which promoted the Expo’s theme of “Better City, Better Life.” The World Expo was completed in May of 2010 to last until October 31st, which attracted over 70 million visitors. Each country’s pavilion showcased their cultural background, business relationship with China, and each country’s efforts to become more environmentally friendly through education and innovative technology. Along with the two day tours of the World Expo, exclusive meetings were set with the Port of Shanghai; a day trip was organized to the “Venice of China” a town called Zhujiajoa, an hour and a half outside of Shanghai; city tours of the historic districts of Shanghai with renowned Tess Johnston were organized by Jerry Libbin along with positive meetings with Travel and Leisure Magazine. The delegation was treated to exclusive conferences and tours that are not normally easily accessible. The Chamber’s dedication to promoting

business with China and Jerry Libbin’s persistent effort and relationships provided the delegation with a culturally rich experience. With tourism on the rise in China, the possibilities for Miami Beach businesses are endless. And vice versa, studies have shown that by the year 2020, 100 million Chinese tourists will come to the United States, and what better to place to visit than Miami Beach! The delegation scheduled strategic meetings with Chinese businesses in order to appeal to Miami businesses and ensure that these individuals will be part of the 100 million tourists. A welcome dinner was arranged by Jerry Libbin with Executive Vice President, Wang Xiaoshu, of the Shanghai People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries in order to further strengthen relations with this important organization. Of course, all work and no play would not be a fair assessment of the trip. The delegation was fortunate to explore the city thoroughly with an extensive tour of the Shanghai Jewish historic area, Art Deco District, and Buddhist Temples where rubbing the Jade Buddha’s belly for prosperity was a must! Along with plenty of art galleries, a visit to the Shanghai museums, night time boat rides on the Huangpu River, and walking along the Bund and fashion district of Xian Tian Di. The most useful Mandarin phrase used was “Xie Xie,” which means “Thank You,” for the delegation was thankful to be welcomed by such a vibrant and globally renowned city. Shanghai is a magical city, and through the opportunity with the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce, a lifetime full of memories.

that after being America’s most renowned ballet superstar during his own dance career, Villella could be so cheeky! After the performance, VIPs gathered in the Peacock Room for a champagne and dessert reception to celebrate the company’s glorious start of their 25th anniversary season and Toby Lerner Ansin’s 70th birthday. In June of this year, the Toby Lerner Ansin Scholarship was established by the Ansin family to honor both of those important milestones. My congratulations to my dear friends Toby and Edward. I was thrilled to be there! Miami City Ballet, which has been based in Miami Beach since its start, is now recognized as an internationally acclaimed cultural treasure with 50 dancers, a multi-million dollar budget, and prestigious ballet school with an enrollment of over 300 students.

daisy@thedaisycolumn.com The opening night performance of Miami City Ballet’s highly anticipated 25th season at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts was filled with exciting surprises. MCB’s glamorous founder Tobyy Lerner Ansin was honored onstage by Edwardd Villella, MCB Founding Artistic Director and CEO, for her vision and support during these 25 years and MCB’s live Opus One Orchestra, under the baton of maestro Garyy Sheldon, was back after a two-year hiatus. The excitement continued with the company premiere of Jerome Robbins’ “Fanfare”, George Balanchine’s “Bugaku” and his signature “Theme & Variations” (Balanchine’s tribute to Imperial Russian ballet). All were performed to perfection. I never tire of anything Balanchine. Choreography that has such geometric precision yet is so elegant and graceful. Sigh. And from the front row, well, it just does not get any better.

“Fanfare” first premiered on the night of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation in 1953 — a playful take on Benjamin Britten’s “The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra.” It

was especially chosen to welcome the orchestra back to the ballet. Villella returned to the stage for every performance of “Fanfare” as the Narrator. Who knew

Commencing on the morning of November 11th at 9:00, the parade will bring participants south on Washington Avenue from 17th Street to 11th Street, where the parade will turn west before entering Flamingo Park. The best location for viewing this year’s parade will be on the west of Washington Avenue between Lincoln Road and 11th Street from 9:00 to 9:45 am. The wreath laying ceremony and 21-gun salute at Flamingo Park will begin at approximately 10:00 am following the parade. A moment of silence will be observed at 10:30 am in honor of the First World War Armistice

Day Tradition. Captain Mark Causey of the Miami Beach Police Department has received approval from the Pentagon for a fighter jet “flyover” during the ceremony. Immediately following, Commissioner Libbin will be hosting a picnic for the parade participants. Commissioner Libbin has made it his mission to revive the Veterans Day festivities, adding the picnic for all parade participants to enjoy. His outreach to schools, organizations and businesses to drum up marchers has been met with tremendous response with over 80 diverse groups participating this year. “Commissioner Libbin has really helped to reorganize the parade to a greater honor for our Veterans,” says annual parade organizer and Vice Commander of the American Legion Miami Beach Post, David Patlack. “He is bringing in students and a plan that makes this the best Veterans Day on Miami Beach ever.” Looking forward to the parade, Commissioner Libbin comments, “The men

The Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce is Exploding with Ability! BY R. DAVID NEW

The First Annual Biz-Ability Luncheon, “Where Ability Means Business”, took place on October 22nd at BLT Steak at the Betsy Hotel on Miami Beach. The luncheon was a part of Ability Explosion 2010. The purpose is to celebrate the abilities of people with disabilities while promoting technology to improve accessibility for the entire community. The Chamber sponsored this event and let there be no mistake, they got down to serious business. The premise of the event was to showcase three extraordinary individuals who have been successful in business despite what society says it means to have a disability. Virginia Jacko, President and CEO of the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind, Sabrina Cohen of SABCO Productions and Jack Barnes of VITAS Healthcare Corporation were given time to speak about their personal experience and then answer questions relating to their struggles and their successes. Dozens of members of the business community were provided insights by the presentations as a scrumptious lunch was

the guests with lots of goodies including certificates from Sudsies Dry Cleaners. Ren’ee Rentmeester and Vision World Foundation were also on hand filming a new episode of “Cooking without Looking” and taped segments of the luncheon as part of their nationally syndicated show. Special thanks to Jason Loeb, the new Chairman of the Chamber for sponsoring, Ceci Velasco of the Chamber for orchestrating the questions and panel with great aplomb and to Commissioner Jerry Libbin for opening up the event with inspirational words for all who were in attendance.

More than 300 people turned out for the Miami Beach Arts Gala: A Celebration of the Arts, a grassroots effort to provide needed funding for the arts. Thanks to an outpouring of support from the community, the event raised $60,000, which will be utilized by the Miami Beach Cultural Arts Council to award grants to local performing arts organizations. The Arts Gala paid tribute to locally-based Arts luminaries Judy Drucker, Lifetime Achievement Award recipient; Michael Tilson Thomas, Visionary Award recipient; and Dr. Sanford L. and Dolores Ziff, Cultural Arts Champions. The ballroom at the Miami Beach Convention Center was transformed into a

spectacular setting, complete with three performance stages, large projection screens and elegant décor. Even the dinner menu reflected the arts theme, with whimsical, arts-themed monikers such as “Klangfarbenmelodie” (Tone-color-melody distributed amongst instruments) for the dessert, which was served on plates made from vinyl record albums. Guests were treated to a variety of performances, including music by Baby B Strings, a trio comprised of violin, viola and cello during the cocktail reception, Oriente, a lively collage of Cuban, Brazilian, southern Blues and Jazz. Side stages featured members of three diverse dance troupes: Pioneer Winter Collective, Dance Now! Ensemble and Miami Contemporary Dance Company.

Even the centerpieces that graced the tables reflected the evening’s arts theme, as they were created by art students from Miami’s Terra Environmental Research Institute, an eco-friendly prototype for schools to come. The students used dried tree branches to create twig sculptures for each table. Spearheaded by Commissioner Jerry Libbin with Gala co-chairs Bob Goodman and Harvey J. Burstein, the Gala committee included representatives from arts organizations, tourism and allied industries – all dedicated to preserving Miami Beach’s rich legacy of showcasing the best talent the City has to offer. “It is heartwarming to see how the community came together to support something that is such an integral part of our identity as a Cultural Arts Mecca,” says Jerry Libbin.

Sponsors for the event were Miami Beach Convention Center, Centerplate, Logistics Management, Prestige AV, Waste Management, New World Symphony, City of Miami Beach, Greenberg Traurig Law, Ladenberg Thalman Financial Services, Collins Park Neighborhood Assoc., GMCVB, Gutierrez & Associates, Magic City Casino, Catalina, Boucher Brothers Management, Shore Club/Mondrian, Beach Towing, Tremont Towing, Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce, Opium Group, Eden Restaurant, W Hotel, Gansevoort, and Eden Restaurant. On the heels of the success of the event, plans are already underway for the Second Annual Miami Beach Arts Gala!

Bldg.18, H-Space, bldg 18, 50 Moganshan Road, Shanghai How long is the validity of an exhibition, 10 years or longer? 10 years ago, it was in the millennial 2000 that Chinese contemporary art reached its new start. In that autumn, three budding young artists, Yang Fudong, Yang Zhenzhong and Xu Zhen, launched their group exhibition in Shanghai, known as Useful Life 2000. The remarkable success of this exhibition brings them to the spotlight of the Chinese contemporary art, even the world stage. Today, decade after the exhibition, they will “revalidate” it again, which is Useful Life 2010. In these years, three novas have evolved to the elite of Chinese contemporary art. Meanwhile, the contemporary art faces a different context in china from the former era. Now these three artists decide to make an extension of the useful life, and brand new works will be shown. All these works will indicate the maturity, the introspection and the track of their art, especially their firm attitude. ShanghART is looking forward to meet you in this autumn and see the beginning of the new useful life. Gallery and Exhibit information: ShanghART Gallery website, http://www.shanghartgallery.com

SoHo House Group opens club-hotel on Miami Beach BY RON BEASLEY

Nick Jones started the SoHo House Group in London 16 years ago. In that short span, it has become one of the hottest private club and hotel operations in the international marketplace. Jones, 47, now has 25,000 members worldwide in his SoHo House Club, four clubs in London, another in the countryside of England, one each in New York and Los Angeles, and with the recent opening of the SoHo Beach Club, one in Miami Beach. All are private members’ clubs — a membership costs $1,500 a year. They also double as public hotels, meaning that even if you aren’t a member, you can still get a room at the oceanfront inn, but it just will cost you a little more. “It’s an international club, so around the world we have a load of members and they buy one membership and it allows them to go into any of the houses (clubs) they want, Jones said. “You don’t have to be a member to stay in the hotel room, there’s just a different rate; there’s a member’s rate and a non-member’s rate. Jones and his SoHo House Group bought the aging Sovereign Hotel, 4385 Collins Ave., a year ago and refurbished it from top to bottom. “We wanted a beachside property in America, Jones said. “But we wanted a location where our New York members could fly down to and have fun on a weekend. So we’ve taken this hotel built in 1942 and refurbished the whole thing. Every bedroom has been re-done; everything is brand new; we’ve even built a tower on it. “The restaurant is Cecconi’s; it’s open 24 hours, very affordable and open to the public. You can go in there and have a pizza and a glass of wine or you can get a full-blown meal. We also have the Cowshed Spa on the premises, a rooftop swimming pool, a large pool on the

ground, a gymnasium, a cinema and big events programming. Jones said he purposely chose to buy a hotel located north of South Beach for very specific reasons. “We prefer this end of the beach, he said. “We prefer the actual beach; it’s smaller and the hotel is much nearer the ocean than if we were located right down on South Beach. And it’s quieter; it’s much busier down there. Jones adds that he thinks Miami is a perfect fit for his SoHo House Group because the population here is young, hip and creative. “We love the community here in Miami, he said. “Our membership base is very creative. It’s very much made up of film, media, fashion — that sort. It’s very much the basis of where our membership comes from. And that’s here in abundance in Miami, so we have a great local membership base. And, besides, 50 rooms shouldn’t be too difficult to fill. For more information, call 786-5077900 or go online to <www.sohobeachhouse.com>.

Lexus HS 250hp is world’s first hybrid-only luxury vehicle Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS The first thing you notice when you drive the new Lexus HS 250h is how quiet it is. Push the blue start button on the dashboard and it’s almost impossible to discern that the motor has powered up. And that’s just the beginning of all the new technology you’ll find on this remarkable automobile. The HS 250h went on sale in the U.S. a little over a year ago and it quickly has become known as the world’s first dedicated luxury hybrid, with its innovative engineering, intelligent design, roomy interior and maneuverability. It also maximizes fuel economy and uses the most ecologically advanced materials. For 2011, the Lexus HS 250h is available in standard and premium models and has a combined EPA fuel economy rating of 35 mpg — 35 mpg city and 34 mpg on the highway — on regular gasoline, a 74 percent better city rating than the average nearluxury sedan.

This Lexus hybrid uses a high-efficiency four-cylinder Atkinson-cycle twin-cam gas engine with four valves per cylinder and Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence (the first four-cylinder ever used in a Lexus) mated to the Lexus Hybrid Drive system. The engine has a high compression ratio and peak output equals 147 hp. In combination with the hybrid drive motor the system generates 187 hp. One of the keys to lower fuel consumption involves heat and, much like the Lexus RX 450h, the HS uses an Exhaust Heat Recovery System that captures exhaust gas heat to speed engine coolant warm up and allow the hybrid system to stop the engine earlier and more often in the driving cycle when it’s not needed, such as in city driving. Using a two-motor hybrid system, the HS 250h uses a 141 hp drive motor that combines with the gas engine. A second motor in the hybrid system serves as both the engine starter and generator to charge the hybrid battery pack. The HS 250h clocks 0-60 mph in a not-toshabby 8.4 seconds and is very responsive in highway passing situations, thanks to the instant torque of the electric motor and the ECVT’s ability to quickly find the best gear ratio.

Lexus HS 250h has forward positioned A-pillars that give it a sleek, aerodynamic shape and a silhouette line that flows smoothly from front to rear. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

As for styling, the HS 250h has a taller profile and the A-pillars are positioned more forward to give it a sleek, aerodynamic shape and a silhouette line that flows smoothly from front to rear. Up front, the grille is set low without openings for a smooth airflow over the hood. An air inlet below the grille cools the hybrid system and a larger one lower in the fascia cools

the engine and radiator. Base price on the 2011 Lexus HS 250h is $36,970.
