MAYOR MATTI HERRERA BOWER
O
n November 1, 2011, incumbent Matti Herrera Bower won her third term as Mayor of Miami Beach, earning nearly 60% of the vote. This election win marks her final term as Miami Beach Mayor. Mayor Bower won the majority of the votes against three challengers: Steve Berke, Dave Crystal and Laura Rivero Levey. Under her leadership as Mayor, the City has completed a number of incredible projects, such as South Pointe Park, the North Beach Bandshell, SoundScape and Pennsylvania Avenue garage, 1111 Lincoln Road parking and plaza, Fifth and Alton Center, Normandy Shores Clubhouse, a renovated Scott Rakow, and more. In addition, the Mayor led the city’s effort to bring the acclaimed International Baccalaureate program to every child in each Miami Beach public school, through a groundbreaking Education Compact with the school district. And she promoted the tourism industry through the Mayor’s Blue Ribbon Task Force on Tourism, the Gay Business Development Enhancement Committee, and fought for funding for the convention center. Bower won a third term in part because of her platform, which included tackling pension reform, the convention center renovation, and Memorial Day weekend. She was also key on issues such as Port of Miami traffic impacts, affordable housing, and historic preservation. Mayor Bower demonstrates a strong vision, leadership and philanthropic commitment on behalf of the citizens of Miami Beach. As the first woman mayor and first Hispanic mayor, Matti Bower is a driving force for positive change in the city she calls home. She is affectionately known as “the People’s Mayor”.
ommissioner Deede Weithorn won with 65 percent of the vote against first time candidate Maria Meruelo, a real estate agent, in the November Miami Beach Group VI Commissioner elections. Miami Beach Commissioner Weithorn, a CPA who was first elected to the commission in 2007, has advocated for transparency in local government and created the Transparency, Reliability, Accountability Committee (TRAC). As a Certified Public Accountant, who has served on numerous city and civic boards, she has the skills to ensure tax dollars are not wasted. Weithorn has been one of the chief architects of Miami Beach’s “model” budget which over the past few years has been structurally transformed from a one year – reactionary budget to a forward thinking five year comprehensive budget that address both current and long term needs. As a Miami Beach native, Commissioner Weithorn is pleased to continue with dedicated service to her community by emphasizing fiscal responsibility. DEEDE WEITHORN

Letter from the Chair BY JASON LOEB
Chairman, Miami Beach Chamber I couldn’t be happier with the leadership team we currently have in place here at the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce. So I’m continuing my theme of recognizing the outstanding people who have served this organization so incredibly as members and now as great leaders. Incoming Pillar Chair David Sacks is one of those individuals. There couldn’t be a better fit than David to install programs of both greater breadth and depth to this top membership tier. In speaking with him, he’s passionate in continuing to bring in the best speakers in the best venues, and setting the best environment conducive to forging relationships that result in mutual transactions and growth. He’s also committed to providing added value. Much can be learned from the Pillars membership as well. Comprised of owners and executives, fellow Pillars have the opportunity to capture seasoned advice from Miami Beach’s established leaders, as well as fresh perspective from its promising up-and-comers. Combined, this group is our most active and committed in challenging the Chamber to deliver upon its mission. Ultimately, business is social, so why not associate with the best and the brightest this City has to offer? Pillars gives you the exposure and initiatives needed to make this happen. A great group of people requires an even more extraordinary leader. David is that person. I’m confident his personal success and Chamber tenure will enable him to lead in a way that retains our existing members, brings in new professionals and enhances the Pillars experience in a way that expands the revenue stream of Miami Beach and our respective businesses. Expect many exciting happenings come from David within the coming months. In the meantime, his vision is keep the Chamber booming, and make it the best chamber of commerce in Florida, if not the nation. Now that’s thinking big.

Never Pay Another Expensive Repair Again
The $outh Florida Gaming Repor t
The bill has arrived
BY ISADORE HAVENICK
After great anticipation and a wonderful string of top notch dog and pony shows the “Resort Destination Gaming Bill has officially been filed. Everyone from Miami to Tallahassee and everywhere in between will be spending the next several weeks dissecting the bill, telling us everything that is wrong with the bill, while calculating how to either kill or pass the bill. The bill, filed in both the House and Senate, purports to allow a total of three destination resort casinos in MiamiDade and/or Broward counties. The bill brings promises of jobs and increased
tourism from the backers while opponents cite the destruction of moral fiber and the potential heavy toll results may take on existing hotels and restaurants losing out to the mega resorts. Existing pari-mutuels that house slot casinos remain at a 35% tax rate compared from the much more favorable 10% rate the resorts casinos get. Clearly this is an operational inequity that has raised more than just eyebrows. The whole show will be managed by a gaming commission that gets composed through a string of political appointments. Certainly there is a lot to digest in the 140 pages plus document. All we know for sure is the original bill as filed and the final form, if it gets that far, are not likely to resemble each other. There is a lot of plastic surgery to be done if this patient is going to walk the runway in Tallahassee this winter.

MBVCA Board Member Miami Beach continues to shine brightly for the LGBT Visitor with 2 new offerings geared towards making the destination even more appealing, if that is even possible. New in October are the roll-out of the new Hospitality Program known locally a “Pink Flamingo” and, a new Latin themed celebration called Orgullo! Though, entirely different programs, each offers international appeal and, sets as an objective to distinguish Miami Beach as the premiere global destination for the gay & lesbian traveler. Miami Beach, for years the destination of choice for LGBT travelers looking for a community that welcomes them without reservation, is going the extra step this fall in reaching out to LGBT visitors. The Miami-Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (MDGLCC) and the LGBT Visitor Center on Miami Beach are announcing the launch of the Pink Flamingo Hospitality Program on September 28th. The Pink Flamingo Hospitality Program will be conducted by MDGLCC partner, YES Institute, the industry source for knowledge on gender and orientation. YES institute will provide one-hour educational workshops for hoteliers that address fears and misinformation that lead
to discrimination by using a unique discussion method designed to turn “us vs. them” into just “us,” so no one is seen as an outsider. The first-ever Celebrate ORGULLO, a festival showcasing LGBT Hispanic Pride during Hispanic Heritage Month, took place this weekend on Miami Beach. On Saturday, October 1st 2011, Ocean Drive was the backdrop as thousands of event goers and supporters came out for the fabulous extravaganza of Latin music, entertainment, folkloric groups, dance contest and performances by renowned artists. With an attendance just over 2,600, the event was a great celebration for people from all walks of life. Celebrate Orgullo featured a fun and diverse line-up of performances, dozens of colorful vendor, food and drink pavilions. The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) in partnership with The City of Miami Beach collaborated on building a special pavilion with music, dancing and great prize giveaways. In addition, the interactive station included airbrushed tattoos, photo booth sessions and delicious “granizados” - which were a refreshing treat that helped attendees better appreciate the sunny weather in South Florida.

City of Miami Beach Unanimously Renews Management Contract with Global Spectrum at the Miami Beach Convention Center City of Miami Beach Officials, Finance Committee, and Convention Center Advisory Board voted unanimously to approve a 2-year extension with Global Spectrum to continue providing innovative management, sales, marketing, and operations of the Miami Beach Convention Center (MBCC) and Colony Theatre. “We are pleased to have Global Spectrum managing the Miami Beach Convention Center for the next two years,” boasted City of Miami Beach’s City Manager, Jorge Gonzalez. “Coming into the City, the GS management team committed to enhancing the visitor’s experience and focusing on the Center’s financial bottom line. In both cases they have exceeded everyone’s expectations. Congratulations to John Page, Bob Balsam and the entire Global Spectrum team. “ Global Spectrum was awarded the original contract in October 2008 and within the first fiscal year reduced its operating loss by over $600,000, boasted an electrical savings of over $140,000, and decreased overall expenses by over $1,000,000 over previous management. In three years, Global Spectrum successfully hosted more than 300 events with over 1.5 million attendees and played an integral role in the revitalization and enhancement of the MBCC. “We are very lucky to have Global back for two more years,” said City of Miami Beach Commissioner Jonah Wolfson. “I’ve been pleased with their work and look forward to many more years.” Most recently, major city-wide events at the MBCC in 2010 and 2011 boasted record breaking attendance numbers, internationally and nationally, including; American Academy of Dermatology (19,500+), American Institute of Architects (17,000+), and Society of Critical Care Medicine (5,900+). Most recently, the MBCC welcomed to its first U.S. City, China Sourcing (first China-based show ever at the MBCC) and Global Spectrum secured International Society for Pediatric Adult Diabetes, American Academy of Periodontology, Society of Nuclear Medicine, Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics Conference, and WrestleMania’s Axxxess all on the books for FY 2012. “Our professional team dedicated themselves to enhancing the MBCC every day. And on top of these successes, increased survey scores across the board, including Sales and Marketing, Operations, and Event and Guest Services, resulting in an overall posi-
tive rating increase to over 94 %,” said Global Spectrum’s General Manager at the Miami Beach Convention Center, Bob Balsam. “We are proud to have unanimous support for the City of Miami Beach and look forward to continuing long-lasting partnerships with all of our community partners for years to come.” Upon arrival Global Spectrum instituted a new How YOU Doin’? and guest services program to improve customer service, started an annual client users meeting to increase communication efforts with show organizers, implemented new innovative marketing solutions from an in-house marketing agency, digital signage, and mobile messaging platforms to enhance the attendee experience, developed in-house events and community initiatives, and launched a comprehensive green initiatives program, STEP UP, (Global Spectrum’s Total Environmental Plan) to reduce expenses for the City of Miami Beach. “On behalf of Messe Schweiz, we would like to congratulate Global Spectrum on their tremendous accomplishments at the Miami Beach Convention Center over the last three years,” said René Kamm, CEO of Messe Schweiz. “Our experience with Global Spectrum has been outstanding. MCH has grown Art Basel Miami Beach to four halls and our relationship with the Convention Center and the City of Miami Beach has never been stronger; this would not have been possible without Global’s team at the MBCC.” Global Spectrum (global-spectrum.com) manages the Miami Beach Convention Center and Colony Theatre, as well as more than 100 other public assembly facilities around the world. Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz presents to Miami Beach Chamber’s Women’s Business Council The Women’s Business Council of the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce had this year’s first Lunch with a View event at La Gorce Country Club. Congresswoman Debra Wasserman Schultz was the honored guest being interviewed by award winning author, Ellen Brazer; trainer & coach, Michelle Villalobos; and Women’s Business Council Chair, DeAnne Connolly Graham, Director of Sales & Marketing for Welcome Magazine. No matter the political views of the attendee of this breakfast, the guests agreed that Congresswoman Schultz, the current Chair of the Democratic National Committee, was very engaging and inspiring. The Congresswoman spoke about her early days in politics when her youth, more than her gender, tended to be an obstacle in her being taken seriously. At the age of 26, she became the youngest female legislator for the State of Florida House of Representatives. One of her mentors during those early days was Rep. Peter Deutsch, who encouraged her to run in his race back in 1992. She won 53 percent of the vote, and that was just the beginning of her very successful political career. One of the strong messages Congresswoman Schultz shared was that she knew at a young age that she wanted to pursue a career in public service. This was very beneficial in her gaining the knowledge and valuable experience needed to help advance her career. Another insightful message Congresswoman Schultz portrayed was the power of “sisterhood” and the importance of women supporting, mentoring, and uplifting other women. Especially when most women need to balance the responsibilities of family, career, and time for themselves, this support system is essential. As an example, the Congresswoman could only stay for one hour because she had to leave to pick up her children from school. She shared how she juggles her schedule and will sometimes make other sacrifices necessary so that she can be present for the activities that are important to her children. Wendy Unger, Membership Relations Manager for the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce, said, “I had the opportunity before she reached the podium, thanks to her aide and my friend Laurie Flink to thank her for all she has done for FORCE, Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered, the organization that represents those of us who have the Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer gene mutation. She also is a carrier; and was responsible for seeing that National Hereditary Breast and Ovarian
Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Cancer Week and National Previvor Day are celebrated at the end of September each year.” The attendees were impressed by the Congresswoman’s candor in discussing her personal life and the challenges she faced and continues to face in her career. When asked if she would consider running for President one day, the Congresswoman stated she was concentrating on her very important current responsibilities, but many of the women in the audience are hoping that will be a future goal. Sponsors for the event were: Tropical Survival, an Internet marketing Company and RyanAlexander Interiors, an interior design firm - both women owned businesses and active members of the Women’s Business Council. Rona Rose Witeck with Tropic survival Introduced the interviewers and guests. While Pam DiTomaso, owner of RyanAlexander Interiors spoke about the event’s charity of choice, Ayuda Miami. There were a wide variety of wonderful raffle prizes that helped raise donations for Ayuda. This 5013c non-profit has been helping underserved families throughout Miami since 1977 with educational and empowerment programs for children, teenagers, parents, and the elderly. The delicious and beautiful centerpieces were provided by Iris Nieves, owner of Edible Arrangements on Miami Beach. “I generated some new business by participating in this event”, a jubilant Iris told other Chamber members shortly after the event. Stay tuned for more exciting events from this Women’s Business Council.

AT&T Microsite Shows Local Customers Recent Network Upgrades In response to customer feedback, AT&T has created a hyper-local web site that shows Miami-Fort Lauderdale area customers where wireless network upgrades have been made since the start of the year. Visitors to the “Focus: Miami-Fort Lauderdale” microsite immediately view a map of the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area and are prompted to select the city or county they’re most interested in. The map displays specific network upgrades that AT&T has made in the area in 2011. The enhancements shown on the site include new cell sites, broadband speed upgrades, capacity upgrades, and network connection upgrades. Year-to-date*, AT&T has completed 561 network upgrades in Miami-Dade and Broward counties, including 45 in Miami Beach: 29 capacity upgrades and 16 network connection upgrades. So how do you benefit? By adding extra “lanes of traffic” (additional capacity) and a “bigger pipe” (network connection with fiber line) to the cell sites, you can experience fewer dropped calls, improved service quality and 4G speeds with compatible devices. The local network enhancements are part of AT&T’s efforts to deliver the most advanced mobile broadband experience for customers. Additionally, AT&T invested more than $425 million in its Florida wireless and wireline networks during the first half of 2011.
The “Focus: Miami-Fort Lauderdale” microsite also provides visitors mapped locations and phone number for AT&T stores in their area, and a Wi-Fi Hotspots tab shows Wi-Fi locations, right down to the local coffee shop. Also included on the microsite is a “Did You Know?” section that provides helpful tips and suggestions for smartphone users, such as how to extend the battery life of devices, how to manage data consumption more efficiently, and more. In addition, AT&T has created a dedicated Twitter handle that visitors can follow for upto-date information on what is going on in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area. Tweets from the @ATT_Miami handle are featured on the microsite. All of these sections are updated every Thursday to help AT&T connect with its Miami-Fort Lauderdale customers on a more personal and local level. You can view the “Focus: Miami-Fort Lauderdale” microsite here: http://focus.att.com/miami or directly from most smartphones**. *Data year-to-date as of Oct. 13, 2011. **Microsite optimized for viewing on the following smartphones: iPhone 3G/3GS/4/4S; HTC Inspire; Impulse 4G; LG Thrill; LG Phoenix; BlackBerry Torch; HTC Status; Sony Xperia Play; Samsung Infuse; Samsung Galaxy S II, and Motorola Atrix 2.
Y-BALE Program Sweeps Florida North Pointe YMCA Miami Florida
In July, AT&T in Florida unveiled a statewide summer program called “Youth for Broadband Awareness Literacy & Education” (Y-BALE) to increase broadband awareness among youth from non-urban communities. AT&T held Y-BALE seminars at several summer camp programs bringing relevant "hands-on" training in computer technology to the youth and young adults. In creating Y-BALE, AT&T’s goal was to educate Florida’s youth on the value of wireless broadband in their communities by utilizing technology through a variety of media components including television, radio, web streaming and face-to-face ed-
ucation. Access to these media components in non-urban communities will be enhanced through AT&T’s proposed acquisition of T-Mobile. Each Y-BALE seminar culminated with participants producing mobile-phone recorded videos ranging from 30-60 seconds. Messages prepared by the participants included topics such as the effects of cyber-bullying and the value and necessity of a good education. A small group of community stakeholders judged each video and awarded prizes for first, second and third place. By the end of the summer, the program reached more than 700 students.

Miami Beach Arts Gala: Supporting the Local Arts
Nearly 300 people turned out for the 2nd Annual Miami Beach Arts Gala at the Miami Beach Convention Center on October 22nd. The Gala paid tribute to locally-based Arts luminaries Mary Luft, Lifetime Achievement Award recipient; George Neary, Cultural Arts Champion; and Neisen Kasdin, Visionary Award recipient. Proceeds from the event will be utilized by the Miami Beach Cultural Arts Council to award grants to local performing arts organizations. The ballroom at the Miami Beach Convention Center was transformed into a spectacular setting, complete with a “Liberati Dinner Reception” featuring artwork by Lou Lou Davila Hagopian, large projection screens and elegant décor. Even the dinner menu reflected the arts theme, and Executive Chef Jonathan Barnett outdid himself with whimsical, arts-themed monikers such as “The Bard in Miami” and “I ART Miami Beach,” a dessert that included heart-shaped angel cake, raspberry marmalade, white chocolate panache and “I ART Miami Beach” written in chocolate across the plate. Glenna Milberg, of WPLG-TV, was the emcee for the evening, and guests were treated to a variety of performances, beginning with the Debbie Orta Ensemble during the reception and two 2010 Arts Gala grant recipients Octavio Campos and Pioneer Winter. Grammy Award winner Felipe Lamoglia and his New Dimensions in Afro-Cuban Beats regaled the crowd, featuring piano virtuoso David Siegel,
followed by 13 year-old pianist Angel Perez from SoBe Arts and vocalist Shane Tanner from the Miami Beach Stage Door Theatre. Hugo Moro, resident artist at ArtCenter South Florida on Lincoln Road, created beautiful original sculptures that were presented to each of the honorees. “The Miami Beach Arts Gala showcases what a large role the arts play in the City of Miami Beach and places the spotlight on how we can continue developing our cultural arts programs,” said Ray Breslin, Chair of the Miami Beach Arts Gala. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity of honoring our biggest supporters of the South Florida arts community year after year and, at the same time, raise money for local arts groups that need it most.” A grassroots, volunteer-driven event, the Miami Beach Arts Gala Committee was comprised of Bob Balsam, Laura Bruney, Kimberly Chmura, Harvey J. Burstein, Sharon Kersten, Jeffrey Rugg, Nick Tierno, Bruce Townsend and Merle Weiss. Sponsors for the event were Centerplate, KCC Productions, Black Eyed Susans, Botran Rum, Delaplaine Champagne, Juan Carlos Zaldivar, Prestige A/V, Global Spectrum and Steinway Piano Gallery of Coral Gables. On the heels of the success of the event, plans are already underway for the Third Annual Miami Beach Arts Gala!

MOUNT SINAI COMPREHENSIVE CANCER CENTER HOSTS 8TH ANNUAL LADIES’ SPA DAY FOR CANCER PATIENTS
On October 18th, The Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Center hosted its 8th annual Ladies’ Spa Day. Approximately 60 women attended the event, all of whom are current cancer patients receiving treatment at Mount Sinai or cancer survivors. The women enjoyed a day of pampering and relaxation while also being provided with helpful information to manage their cancer.
Free services included manicures, massages, facials, hair styling and make-up application. In addition, attendees were invited to participate in free energy therapy, meditation and yoga sessions. Information on healthy eating and integrative medicine were also presented by Mike Cusnir, M.D., oncologist at Mount Sinai. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, bedazzled bras were hung
around the room and later modeled in a special fashion show presented by Nordstrom. Among the survivors at this event was Dulce Hill, who was diagnosed with liver cancer a year ago and was originally told she had just two months to live. “These types of treatments are what make you want to keep on going because I feel very good inside and very full of life. So, I want to look on the out-
side the way I feel on the inside and show that world that I’m still here and I’m alive,” said Hill. A special appearance and motivational speeches by Miss Florida 2011, Lissette Garcia, and Mrs. Florida 2009, Teresa Sheffield, empowered many of the women to realize that confidence and beauty, truly come from within.

Nearly 20-million people attended more than 11,000 events in Global Spectrum venues last year. American Heart Association unites for a cause The American Heart Association painted Miami Beach red on Thursday, October 20th with its annual “Miami Red Dress Fashion Show” during Fukshion’s Fall Fashion Week. The event, which celebrated fashion, philanthropy and culture all in the name of women’s heart health, was held at The Setai Hotel. Fashionable guests mingled, sipped on “Ruby Red Martinis” courtesy of Bacardi and supported the national cause “Go Red for Women” throughout the evening. The program began with a warm welcome from Jonathan Babicka, co-founder of MOMMS Foundation and owner of Primp Salon & Hair Extension Boutique. The boutique was the local presenting sponsor of the show. Lissette Gonzalez, meteorologist at CBS4, served as the Mistress of Ceremonies and model. Vilma Medio, Director of Marketing, South Market for Tenet Healthcare Corporation, thanked the crowd of over 400 people for supporting such a wonderful cause. Guests were treated to a musical performance from Ruben Campbell, singer, actor and founder of Music For Your Heart Foundation, before hearing from the mother of a 5-year-old girl who was born with a heart defect, yet is thriving due to the work of the American Heart Association. Local celebrities who participated in the Miami Red Dress Fashion Show included Monica Fonseca, Natalia Jimenez, Danna Garcia, Candella Ferro, Adriana de Moura and more. The fashion show featured an eclectic assortment of red dresses and swimsuits from renowned designers: Laundry by Shelli Segal and Jantzen by Perry Ellis International, Oscar de la Renta, Donna Karan, Nicole Miller, Gustavo Cadile, Angel Sanchez, Silvia Tcherassi, Diego Binetti, Victoria Lopez Castro, Fisico by Cristina Ferrari, Ever After, Koam Designs, Sarahi House of Fashion, Custo Barcelona, LAVUK and the Project Runway Latin

KEEPING THE COMMUNITY CONNECTION Douglas Elliman Florida does its share
Douglas Elliman Florida volunteers, armed in green bags and rubber gloves, clean up their “Adopted Beach” ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
Preserving a neighborhood’s beauty and character together with a thriving community is an essential backdrop for “bricks and mortar” real estate transactions. For local brokerage Douglas Elliman Florida, that translates into dedicated community involvement and various volunteer efforts by its agents. “Green corporate policies reflect our concern for the overall health of the community” says Vanessa Grout President and CEO Douglas Elliman Florida, which is headquartered in the iconic 1111 Lincoln Road Herzog & de Meuron building. Their office offers environmental features designed to conserve water usage and electricity and recycle waste. “We also reduce the company’s carbon footprint by running a paperless operation,” she notes. Continuing the green theme, Douglas Elliman’s focus on real estate in South Florida coastal communities is backed up by hands-on efforts. For example, early one Saturday morning last July, a group of enthusiastic Douglas Elliman Florida volunteers, armed with green bin bags, rubber gloves and a positive attitude, arrived on their “adopted” beach between South Pointe Drive and Third Street. They spent several hours clearing trash and debris from the sand as part of their Adopt-A-Beach partnership with the City of Miami Beach and ECOMB (Environmental Coalition of Miami and the Beaches), recognized as Miami’s preeminent green organization. The clean-ups are scheduled on a quarterly basis, with the next one taking place on November 19th. The brokerage is also actively involved in historic preservation. In fact, they are the only real estate company in South Florida with the endorsement of the Miami Design Preservation League (MDPL), which fiercely guards the integrity of the area’s historic properties. Douglas Elliman agents Lori Bakkum and Nate Miller are at the forefront of this cause, with Bakkum serving as a board mem-
ber for the MDPL. In this role, she helps organize the annual Art Deco weekend. Additionally, both agents head up the Retro Home Miami division (within Douglas Elliman), which matches buyers and sellers of distinctive Mediterranean Revival, Art Deco and Miami Modern properties in Miami Beach’s historic district. “We deal with people who appreciate the character and architectural details of historic properties, whether it’s a $100,000 studio or a $5 million waterfront estate “says Bakkum. “They love such features as tropical relief mantels, sconces and the original terrazzo and wood floors.” Other agents serve the community through service organizations such as the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce. Madeleine Romanello, a Douglas Elliman Florida BrokerAssociate, has been a Pillar member since 2004 and now chairs the Chamber’s Real Estate Council. This valuable resource for members of the local real estate community offers programs on current issues and educational seminars (open to the public) on cuttingedge trends in real estate and financing. Romanello has spearheaded events including “Making your condo healthy for Freddie and Fannie” and “Foreign Buyers in Miami: what you need to know.” She is now working with the Chamber Real Estate Council on their January event, which will focus on responsible development for Miami Beach. Other leading community and charitable organizations benefit from Douglas Elliman Florida’s presence in South Florida, often discreetly and without fanfare. They include The Consequences Charity and the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce’s Education Foundation. In addition, Douglas Elliman Florida is a ULI Title Sponsor for the Young Leader Division of the Urban Land Institute, Southeast Florida/Caribbean and a Title Sponsor for the Ocean Drive 5K Run held every March.

New Hyundai Veloster is a three-door coupe with sass Ron Beasley LET’S TALK CARS Hyundai recently introduced a nifty new car to the U.S. market called the Veloster; it’s a compact three-door coupe with all the latest technology and it’s targeted at younger consumers. Veloster combines the style of a coupe and the functionality of a hatchback, while incorporating a third conventionally hinged side door on the passenger side for safe, ready egress or access to the rear seat. The rear door handle is cleverly hidden to maintain the coupe design. The sporty, sleek design should have great appeal to high school and college age buyers. Veloster’s unique design was inspired by today’s high-performance sport motorcycles. With distinctive black A-pillars, the car’s window glass has the look of a motorcycle helmet visor. Up front an aggressive form of Hyundai’s signature hexagonal front grille dominates, along with hood scoop detailing and unique LED position lights. Optional
packages add a chrome grille surround, piano black highlights, fog lights and a massive panoramic sunroof. In profile, Veloster has Hyundai’s “Fluidic Sculpture” character lines, muscular wheel arches, body color door handles and mirrors, and wraparound headlights and taillights. Seventeen-inch alloy wheels are standard and two types of 18-inch wheels are available. The rear has a distinctive glass hatch, dual centered chrome exhaust tips and a black lower fascia that complements the front. On the inside, the center stack and controls resemble a sport bike fuel tank and incorporate an available push-button starter. The air vents are inspired by motorcycle tailpipes, while the floor console resembles the seat of a bike. There are numerous interior metallic accents, with alloy pedals and a leatherwrapped steering wheel and shift knob also available. Under the hood, Veloster is powered by an all-new 1.6-liter GDI Gamma engine paired with either Hyundai’s six-speed manual transmission or the company’s first EcoShift dual-clutch transmission. Either way, the combination delivers a fuel-sipping 40 mpg on the highway. The all-new Gamma 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine is the smallest Hyundai engine to use Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI). GDI tech-

nology helps deliver highway fuel economy of 40 mpg, lower emissions and higher reliability. Through the use of GDI, the Gamma 1.6-liter engine delivers a peak output of 138 hp at 6,300 rpm and maximum torque of 123 pounds-feet at 4,850 rpm. The new engine features Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing, an electronic throttle control, a roller timing chain, variable induction and innovative anti-friction coatings such as CrN Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) coating and Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coating. Veloster comes standard with Hyundai’s Blue Link telematics system, a multi-func-
tion seven-inch touch-screen display, Pandora Internet radio capability, Gracenote display technology with voice recognition, video game console connectivity with 115volt power outlet, and Bluetooth hands-free phone system with voice recognition. Pricing for the 2012 Hyundai Veloster starts at $17,300. Ron Beasley is the automotive editor for Miami’s Community Newspapers. Colleges Now Required to Offer Net Cost Calculators BY PETER RATZAN
In the modern college era, many schools strategically use DISCOUNTING as a marketing tool. Therefore, there’s often a big difference between the sticker price of college — tuition, fees, books, room and board — and the net price, or what you actually will be expected to pay through your college savings or excess income (best case) or savings and loans (worst case). In fact, just over 80% of incoming freshman will get some sort of break off the sticker price. Those of you who have been long-time readers know that I’ve been saying and proving this for my clients for years. Thankfully, those of you who haven’t, no longer have to take my word for it. As of Saturday, courtesy of a federal law passed in 2008, all colleges will now be required to add ‘net cost’ pricing calculators to their websites. The calculators will provide parents with an estimate of their family’s expected net price (total costs minus the average amount in grants or scholarships that their student may receive). No question this is a good start as an early planning tool, but it’s definitely not perfect. Here’s why. 1. Not all calculators are created equal. Some colleges are using the template created by the US Dept of Education. It asks only nine questions, including how many children the family has in college, family income, and whether the student is married or has dependents. Problem: These nine questions are all that the government is requiring colleges to ask, but there are 100 questions on the FAFSA and dozens of other factors that can seriously affect a family’s expected contribution (EFC). Those inputs can be as benign as your highest level education to as complex as how to value your business, personal & student assets. There are at least 575 colleges that engaged Student Aid Services, a private company, to provide them with much more involved versions of the calculator. Given the disparity, it’s difficult to get a reliable result and/or to make a true comparison nationwide. 2. Net Price is NOT necessarily the Net Cost To You. I agree with Mark Kantrowitz of FinAid.org who cautions that many calculators figure the net to you after including student and parent loans. That’s risky. Not all schools dole out financial aid equally. Some have no or low loan policies and will offer more grants (which you don’t have to pay back), whereas others offer loans. Though at first glance the net cost may look
the same, if the school is discounting its price with student loans, the long-term costs can be astronomical. Make sure that you know which schools on your list are loan averse. 3. The Results Are Not Guaranteed For Four Years. The calculators will give you an ‘estimate’ of what you might pay for the first year ONLY. Your circumstances, the school’s and the federal government’s change year-to-year. Some schools will ‘front load’ grants to induce a prospect to come. You have to re-apply for financial aid every year, and therefore it’s very important to know the financial history of a particular school to anticipate whether your costs could go up in future years. 4. They Do Not Really Account For Merit Discounts. The calculators work best when determining need-based financial aid awards, but they are less accurate when factoring how merit scholarships (awarded by the Institution) can reduce the cost of college. Although the most selective schools like the Ivies only offer need-based grants, many other good, but less competive institutions and even great public universities looking for out-of-state applicants to boost their net revenues — will give desirable applicants incentives (in the form of scholarships) to enroll. Why? Aside for the aforementioned bump in net revenue for publics, schools are very concerned about their yield (% of accepted applicants who enroll). Positioning your student to apply to schools that are interested in having them attend should be an important consideration in the Admissions process. Since merit is fairly subjective, the net calculators will do little to inform those decisions. Overall, the calculators can be useful as guides to families engaged in early college financial planning and as a starting point for parents to make arrangements to cover the balance. They are not, however, set in stone. Much can be done to help you afford a college of your child’s choice. It’s best to take action early, but even if you have a 12th grader, you still have a very small window opportunity. If this is you, I don’t know what your waiting for. Early decision apps are due next week, regular decision at the end of December and financial aid apps open on Jan 1. Your action now can mean you will have the money this Spring to reward your child’s hard work by affording his college dreams.

On Oct. 25, 2011, FPL and Zoo Miami celebrated the unveiling of the first solar array installed on the zoo grounds, located in the Amazon & Beyond exhibit on top of the trellis area in the main plaza. Part of FPL’s Next Generation Solar Education Station program, the solar array is a donation from Florida Power & Light Company and the result of a partnership with Zoo Miami and the Zoological Society of Florida to expand the zoo’s green initiatives. The Zoo Miami Next Generation Solar Education Station features operational solar panels similar to those in service at FPL’s DeSoto Next Generation Energy Center in Arcadia, Fla. The array of photovoltaic panels converts sunlight directly into electricity, producing on average 617 kWh of energy a month, which represents significant savings to the Zoo’s energy costs. The solar array will also provide school groups and other visitors to the zoo with a hands-on tool to learn about renewable energy. “For the leaders of tomorrow, solar and
other clean forms of renewable energy will be a major part of everyday life,” said Manny J. Rodriguez, regional director of external affairs for FPL. “In addition to providing real energy savings for the zoo, the solar array also serves as a science learning tool visitors can enjoy year-round.” “Zoo Miami is a leader in conservation and we see it fitting to partner with FPL in this very exciting project. We are proud and very fortunate to have this partnership with FPL in our efforts to become sustainability leaders among our peers in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums,” said Eric Stephens, Zoo Miami Director. Zoological Society of Florida President & CEO Benjamin H. Pingree applauds this project and is thrilled to know that FPL is helping the zoo further its conservation efforts. “The solar array will produce enough power to run a computer, dishwasher, microwave oven, refrigerator, television, water heater, clothes washer and dryer all at the same time for one month!”

‘Bizability’ proves that disability is no handicap to success
BY CHARLOTTE LIBOV
Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce members were taken down flights of stairs after the World Trade Center was struck, sent hurtling down ski slopes at record speeds, and learned what it felt like to design the interior of a house without the use of sight when they attended “BizAbility,” the luncheon co-hosted by the Chamber and Ability Explosion recently. The program, which was designed to showcase the capabilities of people who are disabled, was the brainchild of R. David New, a Chamber member and blind entrepreneur, who chose the speakers to demonstrate that anyone is capable of succeeding in business, despite whatever disability they may have. “As human beings, we all have challenges that we may face and overcome. Today, we hear from three extraordinary people who have also been successful, despite the challenges they face in their life,” said New to the Chamber members, who packed the room at Morton’s Steakhouse on Collins Avenue. The first speaker was Michael Hingson, who made his way down 78 flights of Tower One with his guide dog, Roselle, by his side, and wrote a New York Times bestseller, “Thunder Dog: A Blind Man, His Guide Dog, and The Triumph Of Trust at Ground Zero” about the experience. Hingson was not surprised when, at the luncheon, many audience members murmured in disbelief about his accomplishments, but he turned the tables on them, to convince them that he was not only able to climb down the 78 flights but that, in actuality, he was the most qualified person to accomplish it. Being blind meant, Hingson noted, that “I had put a lot of time into learning my way around Tower One, and I knew the layout of the building and what to do in an emergency,” he explained. And so, when the planes hit the Twin Towers, and everyone finally realized they needed to evacuate, it was Hingson who took the lead in Tower One, helping others to safety. But, on the 30th floor, a firefighter stopped him, and insisted on getting him assistance. Hingson tried to beg off, but the firefighter was insistent, and, while he talked, petted Hingson’s dog, Roselle, in the process. (Something you never do when a guide dog is working). Finally, Hingson was able to convince the firefighter that all was well and so the firefighter gave Roselle a final pat, the dog responded with a kiss, and the firefighter continued making his way up into the doomed tower. “Roselle’s kiss was the last unconditional act of love that that firefighter ever got,” Hingson said. Hingson uses his story of Tower One to stress the fact that, in some circumstances, the abilities of blind people can exceed those who are sighted, and he chided the audience for underestimated them. “You can see, but only
in the light. You’re light dependent. You can only manage because Thomas Edison fixed things up for you,” he told the Chamber members. “Just because blind people cannot see does not mean they don’t have vision. I have as much vision as any of you, but unfortunately, people don’t realize it,” he added, stressing his play on words. RECORD-SETTING SPEED SKIING Becoming blind at the age of three didn’t stop Michael May from becoming an inventor, and entrepreneur, working for the CIA, raising a family, and becoming a star athlete, setting the world speed skiing record for a totally blind person and winning six Paralympics skiing records. He also made headlines when he underwent a revolutionary stem cell procedure to regain part of his sight, a mixed success. He is the subject of a book, “Crashing Through - A True Story of Risk, Adventure, and the Man Who Dared to See,” which is to be made into a movie. Still, the biggest obstacles May faced did
not come from his lack of sight, but from the people who tried to keep him from reaching his goals. One time, he recalled, he was all set to compete against sighted skiers in speed stating, but, at the last minute, the resort where he was staying was notified that their insurance would be revoked, “If you let that blind man leave the starting gate.” One of the people at the resort pointed out that May could easily take off from a few feet below the starting gate, comply with the edict of the insurance company, and get to ski. That helped prove May’s point that, no matter what your disability is, “There is always a way to work around it,” and, once you find it, you are as capable as anyone else. THE BLIND DESIGNER French-born Eric Brun-Sanglard, who, known as Eric B. is the face behind his com-
pany, “The Blind Designer.” He was the successful creative director behind perfume advertising clients such Chanel and Dior until 1995, when an eye disease robbed him of his eyesight, leaving him in despair. “I thought my life would never be the same,” he said. It turned out he was right, but to his surprise, he said, “It’s much better now.” At the time he lost his sight, he was in the middle of remodeling his house. He decided to keep up with the project, learning to recognize different textures by touch, became attuned to his home’s sounds and echoes, distinguish building materials through scent. But his biggest discovery came when he discovered, now that he was blind, his other senses went into play, and he could even feel the energy of the house. “I realized there was a room in my house that I had never felt good in. When I lost my sight, and spent time in, I realized it needed an opening. That’s when I realized what energy was. And that’s when I realized my blindness could be an asset,” he said. Finished with the project, Brun-Sanglard put the house on the market and it was snapped up. The same thing happened, again and again, and his housing design business was born. Nowadays, he travels the world, and appears on television, talking about his methods. “Now, I realize that everything is possible. You can turn a handicap into an asset,” he said. David Bernard, CBS-TV Miami’s chief meteorologist, hosted the program, and Lisa Campbell interpreted it in American Sign Language. Another highlight was the giving out of awards to the following leaders: Florida Senator Gwen Margolis for her advocacy effort on behalf of people with disabilities. Dr. Eddy Blanco of VH Pharmacy for his use of technology in making audible prescription pill bottles available for the disabled. The Marriot Call Center for their leadership in training and employing the disabled. And yet there was still more to come, as, at the end, popular Miami Beach vocalist Maryel Epps bought the program to a fitting close by taking the stage to serenade David New with the song, “Wind Beneath My Wings.”

The Solera System
Page 37
Mendiola@USGourmet.US Many of us are lucky to have friends who stimulate and challenge our thinking. While many may call them “strange”, we find they are usually the ones we learn from the most. One of my many “strange” friends, an avid believer in the Silva Method, started to explain the power of energized water as she learned it from Laura Silva, daughter of Jose Silva, founder of the above named method. A lot of what she said made sense: a drop of water from the ocean has the same characteristics as the whole ocean; tests with Ohmmeters have shown an increase in the energy levels of those drinking energized water and the scientifically proven fact that water has “memory” (it remembers the energies of substances it comes in contact with). Seems like Ms. Silva also discusses how over time, non-energized water will become energized once it remains in contact with energized water, no matter the difference in volume. One way she teaches her students to reap the benefits without much trouble, is by adding energized water to the bottom of the regular office water cooler or dispenser before the container is replaced, which energizes all the water in the container and benefits all who drink it. Those of us familiar with the Solera Process are quick to accept this concept since we have been using it for years to “age” liquids such as wines, brandies, beer, rums, tequila, scotch and vinegars. The solera method was first used for aging Sherry in the mid 19th century, but it is believed to have been developed way before then. Since no better records have been found, it is basically accepted that the method started with Sherries in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain.
For at least two hundred years we have been blending older with younger so that the younger will acquire some of the characteristics of the older, enhancing quality and flavors. The transferred product mixes with the older product so the “aging process” is accelerated. No matter how small the amount of product left on the containers, once you add the new product, almost immediately the blend will show traces that are much older than what would be the average. A simplified version of how the solera process works in the Sherry industry, which is basically the same for all the others is that you have a set of barrels at the lowest level called the Solera (where the name of the process comes from) and has the oldest product. Immediately on top of the Solera, are the Criaderas, the set of barrels with the second oldest product and then another Criadera with the next to the oldest product and so on until you reach the youngest or newest. It is usually kept to about four tears. Usually on a yearly basis, the oldest barrels at the bottom, those that make up the solera, are tapped for part of their content and bottled. Then those barrels are refilled from the next oldest barrels, the Criadera above, and those in succession are refilled from the next oldest until the reaching the youngest which is refilled with the new product. It is important to realize that no barrel is ever completely drained. Among the many products that use the solera process are other wines such as some non-vintage Champagnes, Madeiras, Marsalas, Muscats and Ports. Glenfiddich has a 15 year old scotch product that uses the method while Balsamic vinegars and Spanish brandies have been using it for many years. It seems like out of the new entries using the process most effectively are the rums. Zacapa, one of the world’s best rums, only uses the solera system for their creations. When we look at a Zacapa bottle, we find
that it reads Ron Zacapa and right underneath still in bold letters, Solera 23 or whatever the oldest part of the blend is. Another great rum we thoroughly enjoy is the Santa Teresa 1796 Antiguo de Solera, which refers to the system right on the name and uses rums aged between 4 and 35 years in the blend. Thanks to the system, both of these rums are spectacular. During the conversation with our friend about the Silva Method, we were told how one of the exercises taught by Laura Silva is
how to energize water. Needless to say, the first thing that came to mind was whether we can start a new trend of energized wines? While my friend agreed that it could be done and contacting Laura Silva to verify was not out of the question, she recognized and suggested that I do what I am going to do any way, which is to research the Silva Method, start and learn to appreciate energized water and at least for now, stick to regular wine. My “strange” friend knows me well.
