The Event of the Year Returns — Art Basel Miami Beach

T

he highly anticipated Art Basel has come to Miami Beach to showcase its prestigious 2010 international art collection to South Florida. The beginning of December is an exciting time for Miami Beach, for it hosts the region’s most exciting cultural event of the year: the largest art fair in the United States. Lovers of art have come together every year since its debut in 2002 to participate in the festivities that Art Basel has to offer. From art galleries to exhibits, parties with international music, featured films, architecture and design displays, there is so much to discover. This year’s Art Basel has an exclusive selection of more than 250 leading art galleries from North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa,

n his beautifully decorated modern office in the Design District, Craig Robins, President of Dacra Development, spoke to the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce about Design Miami and its future plans with Art Basel. Dacra Development was founded in 1987, spearheaded the restoration of Miami Beach Art Deco landmarks and developed projects on Lincoln Road and Española Way. Dacra is responsible for transforming the Miami Design District into the trendy location that we know today – a creative and social center for all genres of art. Craig Robins described the present Design District as a creative laboratory for all of the industries it supports from fashion design and art to food. It is home to over 130 art galleries, showrooms, stores and includes restaurants with world renown chefs. Craig Robins’ initiative to rehabilitate the urban planning of the Miami Design District lead to the creation and inspiration for Design Miami. Design Miami was founded in 2005 at the request of then Art Basel Director Samuel Keller. During this time, Mr. Keller and some of the key art dealers from around the world realized that it was time to create a design event that would complement and be on par with

Art Basel Miami Beach. Since Mr. Robins was already focusing on the cultural expansion of the Design District, the project became a natural extension of Art Basel. The fusion of progressive design and art complemented the goal of raising cultural awareness at this yearly event. Craig Robins explained, ––––––– See

A

s the Andy Williams song goes, “it’s the most wonderful time of the year.” Ok, turkey dinners, excessive parties and presents aside, the best thing about the holiday season is the human spirit. It’s about giving thanks and giving back. When I first started Sudsies more than 15 years ago, I sought out the Chamber as an effort to boost my business. And it did. But my new-found success wasn’t just in the new business contacts I made, but in the guidance provided by key leaders in the organization. I credit a lot of people in the Chamber for their support, but was perhaps most touched by Michael Milberg, fellow Chamber member and executive director of the Mount Sinai Medical Center Foundation. “It is always about the organization. Do the right thing and you will always be successful.” Michael said this to me more than 10 years ago, and the statement has resounded with me ever since. At the time, Michael was Chairman of the Chamber and a very influential figure to me. Luckily, I seemed to capture his attention as well and he appointed me to the Board. He followed up on these words of advice with many more, and his interest and leadership-by-example taught me that it’s not just about promoting your business, but being a genuine part of the community. I hope that you too have had similar figures in your life - the person, or people, to whom you can credit your personal development and ultimate success. And

which will exhibit both 20th and 21st century works of art. Over 2,000 artists have the opportunity to have their art displayed in Miami Beach this week. Known artists and newcomers alike will have their work on display attracting the attention of the entire international art community. Robert Goodman, Florida Representative for Art Basel, said “In addition to the fabulous art that is being shipped in by galleries from all over the world, we anticipate more than a 100 museums from across America to be represented by their Boards during Art Basel Miami Beach.” He continued with, “We already know that there are many celebrities that will be present at this year’s event, Actors Ben Stiller and Sean Penn, along with Julian Lennon and Lance Armstrong, to name a few.” The popularity and size of Art Basel Miami Beach, stretching from South Beach to the Design District, has come to

DESIGN MIAMI,

from page 1 –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– “The Design District was a design neighborhood prior to Art Basel, and it is now a mixture of both art and design as a result of the event.” The evolution of Design Miami’s relationship with Art Basel has brought their exhibit from the Design District, where it was held last year, to Miami Beach adjacent to the Art Basel show in the Convention Center. Despite the perception that Miami Beach and the mainland are not connected, this move is a clear signal that they are. Mr. Robins, a Miami Beach native himself, said that he is very excited about the move to Miami Beach, because it

rival its sister event in Switzerland. Each year, Miami Beach hosts and welcomes art collectors, artists, curators, critics, spectators and art enthusiasts from around the world to marvel at the endless beauty that our city and the exhibits have to offer. It’s been hard to miss the pink snails that have sprung up throughout Miami, they are an exciting reminder that Art Basel is near. The pink snail art project by Cracking Art Group has caught the attention of residents and visitors alike. They were formally introduced at the Art Deco Welcome Center, located on Collins and 10th Street, on November 19th and will slowly make their way to Collins Park in front of the Bass Museum before January 3rd. The Convention Center will be open to the public for the expositions on Thursday, December 2nd until Sunday, December 5th from noon to 8 p.m., and Sunday until 6 p.m. Spectators are invited to visit all of the exhibition sites, galleries and art studios located in the Art Deco area, Design District Wynwood, and Downtown Miami. represents progress for Design Miami. He explained that there is now “an unbelievable connection between Miami Beach and the Design District.” According to Craig Robins, “Synergies make all businesses work,” and with the marriage between Art Basel and Design Miami, the inflow of international art collectors and artist has given Miami restaurants and hotels the opportunity to cater to a wide variety of tourists. This time of year brings stiff competition to the restaurant and hotel industry to accommodate to the international art enthusiasts that come to the Miami show every year. Design Miami expanded into Switzerland, where it runs parallel to the original Art Basel in June. The future is very bright for the expansion of Design Miami, and the public is enthusiastic to see all of the upcoming growth that is in store. If I can give you anything this season, I hope it’s the following advice: Business is very much personal. It’s about bringing quality to a relationship, enhancing success by working together and giving back so that the cycle can continue. These words aren’t as glamourous as a new hightech gadget or as fancy as designer duds, but I assure you that, if followed with sincerity, they’ll never lose their novelty. Happy Holidays, Jason Loeb Chairman

Mount Sinai Medical Center Dedicates the Lila and Harold Menowitz Comprehensive Breast Center In a beautiful outdoor ceremony shortly before sunset, Mount Sinai Medical Center paid tribute to Lila and Harold Menowitz by dedicating its comprehensive breast center in their honor on Wednesday, November 10. The dedication took place on Harold Menowitz’s birthday, making it a wonderful tribute to his illustrious life as well as his immense generosity. “For nearly 20 years, Mount Sinai Medical Center has been the beneficiary of Lila and Harold Menowitz’s generosity,” said Steven D. Sonenreich, president and chief executive officer. “The Menowitz’s gift of support provides the funding necessary for Mount Sinai to purchase the newest, most advanced SPECT-CT system available today.” SPECT-CT is an advanced molecular imaging technology that combines the anatomic detail of a high resolution CT scan with the sensitive physiologic detail of

nuclear medicine in a powerful 3-D form. The new GE Discovery NM/CT 670 will allow doctors to visualize both the form and function of disease and allow them to more confidently diagnose and stage cancer. It also will make surgery and radiation therapy much more precise, and it will further enhance patient safety and workflow. “Because of Lila and Harold, we will leap far ahead in the earlier detection and treatment of cancer,” Sonenreich said. “And we are extremely grateful.” A successful real estate developer and investor, specializing in residential and commercial properties in 28 states across the country, Harold Menowitz became a Founder of Mount Sinai in 1991. He later encouraged Lila and his son, Fred, to become Founders, and he endowed his daughter, Carol Penn, granddaughter, Valerie Penn, and his grandson Todd Menowitz as Founders.

In 2007, the Menowitz’s were the honorees of the hospital’s 51ST Annual Founders Ball in recognition of their generosity, and he following year, Mount Sinai named the lobby of its newest medical office building in their honor. The Menowitz’s most recent gift elevates them to the level of Visionary in the Society of Mount Sinai. In addition to naming the comprehensive breast center in their honor, Mount Sinai presented the couple with an elegant Oggetti sculpture, as well as a lovely bouquet of flowers for Lila Menowitz. Surrounded by family, friends and neighbors during the dedication, Harold Menowitz entrusted his son, Fred, with the duty of thanking the hospital and the couple’s well-wishers. “My father and Lila, Lila and Harold Menowitz with family in front of the New Mount Sinai Breast as you well know, have Center that was dedicated to them ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– been extremely pleased with their association nering with the excellent physicians working with Mount Sinai Medical Center here in at the Harold and Lila Comprehensive Breast Miami Beach and the entire Menowitz family Center, many lives will be saved and isn’t that is honored to be able to contribute to their the reason for all the efforts made? Maybe wonderful facility that you have named in someday we will be able to stamp out breast their honor,” he said. “We know that in part- cancer.”

A Tribute to Legendary Baseball Coach Skip Bertman BY JOSE SMITH

Miami Beach City Attorney On Friday, November 19, 2010, I was privileged to present a Proclamation and a key to the City of Miami Beach, on behalf of the Mayor and City Commission, to legendary baseball coach Skip Bertman and the Miami Beach High School Senior class of 1970 which celebrated its 40th reunion at the Doral Miami Beach Resort. Skip Bertman was raised in Miami Beach and ran the City’s baseball leagues for nearly 15 years. He coached and taught at Miami Beach Senior High School for 11 years, leading the 1970 baseball team to a state championship. While at Beach High, he was named Florida’s Coach of the Year three times. On a personal note, I first came to know Skip when my parents signed me up for little league at Flamingo park in 1961. While I spoke little English and he spoke no Spanish, we had a common language – baseball. We both understood balls and strikes. He was more than a teacher and coach. He was a father figure, a role model. Once, while pitching in an important Beach High game, I could not get the ball over the plate. I lost my control; poise and confidence. After much counseling, Skip made me read Profiles in Courage by John F. Kennedy. I did. While it did not help my pitching, it made me interested in law and government. And who knows, maybe it had something to do with the choices I made later on. No one has ever had a greater impact on the youth of our community than Skip Bertman. Many residents, and community leaders (me included), can share personal stories about how Skip positively touched

Jose Smith and Coach Bertman ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

their lives. Most would not be where they are today without him. Skip welcomed kids who did not have great talent or natural ability, and through discipline and dedication, made them champions. He embraced diversity at a time when South Florida was not all that progressive. Skip later became assistant head coach at the University of Miami, and head coach at Louisiana State University. During his long and successful career, Skip won numerous national championships. He coached the 1996 U.S. Olympic team which received the bronze medal in Atlanta. He has been inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame. Skip has never forgotten his roots in this community. He returns often and visits with old friends, colleagues and students. The 1970 Beach High class reunion was a special night for me and a testament to a great man.

• COMMISSIONER’S CORNER • Commission Makes $1.2M Ego Bet BY JERRY LIBBIN

At the November 17th City Commission meeting, the Commission approved the Police and Fire pension modifications despite being warned by the pension board’s attorney, Stephen Cypen, that if the Commission approved the changes to the Pension without the vote of the Public, as he believes is a requirement, he will not recognize the changes. Therefore, the City will NOT realize the $1.2 million in savings that are built into our budget for the current year. City Attorney, Jose Smith, repeatedly stated that he did not believe that the vote of the public was necessary, and he recommended that despite the fact that each time (13 times previously) the City made pension changes to the Police and Fire pension plans those modifications were in fact placed on a ballot for the public to decide, that in this case the City did not need to do so. I was the lone dissenting vote to approve the changes without the vote of the public, as I saw this as a battle of EGOS. Everyone agreed with the reductions in benefits and the Police and Fire Unions both agreed to the reductions as well, however, Mayor Bower, and the rest of the Commission (Ed Tobin was absent) supported the Administration’s recommendation to approve the changes without a public referendum. Attorney Cypen had already agreed when I asked him during the meeting if he would recognize the entire savings for this year. If we agreed

to place the item on the ballot in March, when we are already likely to have a special election for a possible recall of Mayor Alvarez, thus the significant expense of a special election (approximately $200,000) would not be borne by Miami Beach residents. When Cypen agreed to this, I suggested that we approve the contracts so that we can start realizing the savings, but that we do so subject to a public referendum as we have always done. I saw absolutely no harm in this, since it is quite likely that the voting public will gladly support a reduction in benefits that will save tax payers $1.2 million in the current year and many more millions of dollars in the future. To my surprise, with Mayor Bower pushing for the Commission to support OUR City Attorney, the motion remained unchanged and it passed 5-1 without my vote. I believe that this was nothing more than a battle of ego between two attorneys, in which the Mayor and Commissioners got caught up in, and which has unnecessarily put $1.2 million at risk. In my opinion, there was little if any downside to placing the item on the ballot in March, which would have guaranteed that the savings of $1.2 million would be recognized for this year. Instead we now will be forced to await the outcome of a challenge by the Pension Board, and the ruling of a Judge on a motion to compel the Pension Board to accept the ruling of the Commission, which City Attorney Smith will file in hopes to force the Pension Board to recognize something that they were willing to recognize if we would have placed the item on the ballot in March.

The grants were awarded in several categories: Development Opportunities, Initiatives, Major One Time Special Events, Special Events Recurring, Special Projects Recurring, and Tourism Partnerships. Included in the Tourism Partnership category were local key programs, including the Miami Beach Watersports Center, the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce’s Miami Beach Guest, The Miami Beach Latin Chamber of Commerce Tourist Hospitality Center, and The Customer and You - Certificate Program in Service. Based on past successes, the MBVCA awarded grants again this year to Art Basel Miami Beach, the 26th Anniversary of Muscle Beach/ White Party, the ING Miami Marathon and Half Marathon and Tropical 5K, the 2010-2011 Orange Bowl Football Game and Ancillary Events and Design Miami. The Future Business Leaders of America organization at Miami Beach Senior High combines community service and business education to prepare students for the real world. Competing in such events as Public Speaking, Accounting, Entrepreneurship, and Global Business, FBLA members learn about the ethical, managerial and entrepreneurial skills necessary to one day run their own successful businesses. However, FBLA does not merely teach its members accounting and marketing skills; three Beach High FBLA vice presidents are also in charge of initiating and executing service projects, which compete against similar projects at the State and National level each year. FBLA vice presidents carried out a number of successful service projects last year. As vice president, I led a committee of students in a project focused on nutrition and fitness with fellow VP Lyssa Goldberg. Partnering with such businesses as Whole Foods Market, Subway, Jamba Juice, and Noobie Games allowed us to hold a successful Health and Fitness expo at Nautilus Middle School, while simultaneously teaching FBLA members about business procedure through real-life experience. Another Vice President, Isabella Mongalo, taught kids about career opportunities through a trip to Wannado City and a booth at the Miami Beach Educational Expo last year. Both

projects placed within the top three at the State Leadership Conference in Orlando, and therefore went on to compete at Nationals in Nashville. This year’s vice presidents will be engaging in a new round of service projects. Jordan Madrigal, junior, is working on a project that involves teaching the elderly how to use computers. According to Madrigal, “The project focuses on seniorstudent cooperation, computer usage, and instructing techniques.” Based in the Beach High media center, these hour-anda-half classes will help keep the elderly up to date and technologically savvy. Lucia Rynka, sophomore, will be partnering with The Bass Museum of Art, “promoting their status” in the Miami Beach community. Rynka plans to use the marketing and promotional strategies that she has learned as an FBLA member to increase awareness of all that the museum has to offer, especially among Beach High students. Other projects are still in planning, but one vice president has her eye on dental health. Beach High has a strong history in FBLA, consistently receiving the Gold Seal Chapter award, which recognizes “outstanding Florida charters that have actively participated in projects and programs identified with the goals of FBLA.” FBLA is one of Beach High’s most successful organizations; last year, membership was well above 100 students. FBLA members will be competing in the District competition in January. Here, students will take objective tests and participate in speaking events, in hopes of placing highly enough to make it to States. The National Leadership conference will be held in Orlando this summer.

Why Hiring a Public Adjuster Makes Sense When Hurricane Wilma damaged an apartment complex in Lauderdale Lakes in 2005, the insurer initially paid $200,000. But after engaging a public adjuster to review the actual losses and handle the claims process, the insurer eventually paid out $4.285 million. In Miami, Orlando, Tampa, Naples and throughout Florida, the story is the same: hiring a licensed public adjuster results in a substantially larger claim payment. In fact, a 2009 survey by the State of Florida found that there was a 747 percent increase when an adjuster was hired at the start of the claims process. Why is there such a large difference? The answer is simple: a public adjuster represents business owners, condominium associations and homeowners – not the insurer. It’s like hiring a tax lawyer or accountant who can advise you on the best course of action and act as your profesDaniel Odess, sional advocate, rather President of East Coast Public than asking the Internal Adjusters, Inc. Revenue Service (IRS) to –––––––––––––––––––––– do you a favor and audit

your return! Most owners are as unfamiliar with the intricacies of a typical insurance policy as they are with the Internal Revenue Code. It’s important to understand that a public adjuster can help you at a time when you are most vulnerable – in the hours and days after a loss to your busi-

ness or property. And since public adjusters are compensated on a contingency basis, there is no upfront cost for their services. Once you engage a public adjuster, you can expect to receive expert advice about what you are entitled to under Florida law and your policy. The public adjuster can also help you with the business planning process by advising on the likely size of a settlement and when that money is likely to arrive. A public adjuster can also bring in a contractor, engineer or other building professional to help determine the accurate damage to your property ensuring a fair compensation. Ultimately, a public adjuster’s goal is to achieve a final settlement that is accurate and fair. It may take several months to accomplish that goal, but compared with the insurer’s initial offer, the end result is likely to be substantially higher. Daniel Odess, President of East Coast Public Adjusters, Inc. will be on site at the Fort Lauderdale Home Design & Remodeling Show to further explain how a public adjuster can help make sense of your insurance policy before you need it. The event will take place on Saturday, December 4, 2010 at 1:00pm at the Broward County Convention Center located at 1950 Eisenhower Boulevard Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33316. Port of Miami Access Tunnel Team to Launch Operation 305 Providing Local Business Contracting Opportunities New program gets underway with Contractor & Supplier Expo on December 1st Operation 305, a new initiative to include local small businesses in the million-dollar Port of Miami Access Tunnel project, will kick off with the Contractor & Supplier Expo on Wednesday, December 1, 2010,, from 7:30 to 10 a.m. at the Port of Miami’s Terminal J. Hosted by Miami Access Tunnel, LLC (MAT), a private concessionaire selected by the state to build and maintain the tunnel, the expo will educate contractors about exciting business opportunities with the project. Registration is $25.00 per person ($35.00 on day of event), includes a continental breakfast, and is open to all small and mid-size business owners and/or their representatives. A portion of the Expo’s proceeds will benefit Miami Children’s Museum. Participants can pre-register online at TunnelOperation305.com; the deadline for pre-registration is November 26, 2010. “The tunnel is one of the largest infrastructure projects ever undertaken by MiamiDade County,” said Christopher Hodgkins, vice president of the MAT Team. “Hosting this expo is the first step in ensuring we

boost the local economy and create jobs right in our own backyard.” Port of Miami Access Tunnel is a public/private partnership including Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), Miami-Dade County, City of Miami and concessionaire Miami Access Tunnel, a private consortium including Paris-based equity partner Meridiam Infrastructure Fund and construction partner Bouygues Civil Works of Florida. The Port of Miami is Miami-Dade County’s second leading economic generator and provides 81,800 jobs, $5 billion in wages and $12 billion in economic output, according to a 2006 study conducted by the Washington Economic Group. Nearly 5,500 large trucks and buses travel to and from the Port of Miami through downtown streets each weekday. Existing truck and bus routes restrict the port’s ability to grow, drive up costs, present safety hazards, and limit redevelopment in the northern portion of Miami’s Central Business District. “The finished tunnel will be a major step

toward preparing our port for the future,” continued Hodgkins. “As the port prepares for growth, it is important increasing numbers of locally-owned and -operated firms join the more than 50 businesses already given contracts so we all see financial growth together.” The Port of Miami Tunnel will provide direct connections between the seaport, I395 and I-95, create an alternative to the port’s existing bridge, improve traffic safety in downtown Miami by removing cargo trucks from already congested streets, and facilitate ongoing and future development plans in and around downtown. Celebrate Art Basel Miami Beach with ‘Breakfast in the Park’ and current exhibitions and events

Each year, in celebration of Art Basel Miami Beach, The Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University hosts an official Art Basel sponsored event, Breakfast in the Park and participates in fairs across town. This year's Breakfast in the Park will take place on Sunday, December 5, 2010 from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Also taking place during this event will be a small celebration for The Frost Art Museum's second anniversary in its new space, which opened to the public in 2008. Over the years, Breakfast in the Park has grown to draw hundreds of art enthusiasts, patrons, collectors, gallery owners and artists from around the world, many of whom are visiting Miami Beach for the most prestigious art show in the United States, Art Basel. Each year a noted sculptor is invited to speak. Guests enjoy a complimentary outdoor breakfast, informal lecture and guided tours of The Sculpture Park as well as the exhibitions in The Frost Art Museum. Now in its eighth year, Breakfast in the Park will feature an informal lecture by Enrique Martínez Celaya, whose works consists of paintings, sculpture, photography, poetry, and prose. Martínez Celaya's work directly reflects his personal experience with a diversity of fields. His work is often characterized by solitary and autobiographical figures seemingly displaced in surreal and symbolic landscapes. Through his background in science, Martínez Celaya investigates the interaction between modern science and the subconscious is his work. In addition to its participation with Art Basel, The Frost Art Museum has partnered with Art Miami, Red Dot, Art Asia, Pulse Art Fair, Aqua Art Fair, SCOPE and the Sagamore for its annual brunch.

On view during the week of Art Basel Miami Beach are:

EMBRACING MODERNITY: VENEZUELAN GEOMETRIC ABSTRACTION THAT RUNS THROUGH JANUARY 2, 2011 This exhibition presents a historical overview of the origins of the country's abstract movement, focusing on its early development dating from the late 1940's to the 1970's. The selection of works from private collections and foundations included in the exhibit document an important period of Venezuela's art history which was instrumental in the development of Modern Art in the Americas. Paintings, sculptures, and installations, illustrate the development of Venezuelan Geometric Abstraction and Kinetic Art, and introduce many artists who contributed to the development of movement in Venezuela, unknown to the American public. The show curated by Francine Birbragher-Rozencwaig and Maria Carlota Perez features works by Carlos Cruz-Diez, Gertrude Goldschmidt (GEGO), Mateo Manaure, Alejandro Otero and Jesús Rafael Soto, among others. ALSO ON VIEW IS LA HABANA MODERNA IN THE WOLFSONIAN TEACHING GALLERY AT THE FROST ART MUSEUM. Havana is the focus of a new exhibition in the Wolfsonian Teaching Gallery at the Frost Art Museum on view in the fall of 2010. By presenting a variety of materials from the collection of The WolfsonianFlorida International University (magazines, photography, architectural drawings, tourist ephemera, and other media), it explores how international commercial and cultural links contributed to the emergence of a modern identity for the city in the decades before the Cuban Revolution. The exhibition is made

possible by financial support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. This exhibition runs through January 9, 2011

SEQUENTIA, XAVIER CORTADA'S SOLO EXHIBIT AT THE FROST ART MUSEUM Explores the sequence of events that make up life on the planet from the molecular to the monumental. The title of the exhibit also references a series of actions Cortada will set in motion to create a unique strand of DNA. The artist will work with a molecular biologist to synthesize an actual DNA strand made from a sequence generated by museum visitors using Cortada's art. This exhibition runs through January 2, 2011 RABLACI: METÁFORAS DEL HOMBRE CONTEMPORÁNEO IN THE SCULPTURE PARK AT FIU Nature forms a substantial part in the representation of this series of works of sculpture which show the character of Rablaci's artistic universe. These large-scale, bronze orange tree sculptures concentrate on the importance of recognizable signs and myths of natural landscapes, using an artistic language which allows for the complementarity of the figurative and the abstract, the formal and the informal, and where folds and lines can be compatible concepts in their convulsive sculptural development. This exhibition is on view December 1, 2010 through January 26, 2010. FROM OLD TO NEW Is an intriguing exhibition that features works attributed to Masters such as Ferdinand Bol, and large-scale works attributed to Peter Paul Rubens and Jacob Jordaens opposite contemporary works by Lydia Rubio, Frances Trombly & Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova and Carlos

Estevez. The juxtaposition of new and old objects work seemlessly in the visual aesthetics of masterpieces. This exhibition is ongoing. FLORIDA ARTISTS SERIES: SELECTIONS FROM ANOMIE 1492-2006 BY ARNOLD MESCHES Throughout his 65-year career as an artist and professor, Arnold Mesches has woven many narratives into lush and virtuosic paintings. The ANOMIE series, paintings and collages that included overt and subtle references to the overlapping histories and multi-cultural aspects of life, encompassed postmodern concepts with old master techniques and structures. In these works, large canvases of cinematic proportions, nothing is overt, images move and mingle freely through time, find their place conceptually, independent of actualities. In a broader sense, they are the conceptual admixtures of reality and the surreal Mesches has been striving for over these many years of painting and activism. This series incorporated pertinent, often disparate, historical and personal images. It seems to be a summation of Mesches' collected views on the world's madness and inconsistencies, on beauty and ugliness, evil and justice, on life over death. Mesches has exhibited extensively throughout the United States and abroad, most recently at PS1 Contemporary, the Museum of Modern Art affiliate. His works are included in the collections of such distinguished institutions as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery, the Whitney Museum and the Hirshhorn Museum. Mr. Mesches has recently been awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Florida in Gainesville. On view through December 5, 2010.

Ronnie Brown, Dan Carpenter and Channing Crowder host Fins and Kids Publix Shopping Spree Ronnie Brown, Dan Carpenter, Channing Crowder along with 30 current players, alumni and cheerleaders hosted the Fins and Kids Publix Shopping Spree at a Publix location in downtown Fort Lauderdale. “We are fortunate and blessed to be in the situation that we are in because we have the opportunity to help other people,” said Brown. “This is a good way to give back and makes someone else’s holiday memorable. It says a lot of the character of the Dolphins organization and Publix to help people that are less fortunate. Holidays are about giving. I am excited that we are helping the community and making someone’s holiday season more cheerful.” Members of the Miami Dolphins gave 100 underprivileged children from MiamiDade and Broward County Public Schools a $100 gift certificate to shop for a Thanksgiving dinner for their loved ones. Current players, cheerleaders and alumni shopped with the children and helped them select the items for their Thanksgiving Dinners. Miami-Dade students were selected from Riverside

Supermarkets, Miami Division. “It’s relaxed, they get to eat, they can bring their family and a lot of them brought their spouses and their kids. The cheerleaders are involved, the alumni, so it really brings everybody together.” - DOLPHINS -

Cadillac Escalade Hybrid delivers technology, luxury Ron Beasley LET’S TALK CARS Cadillac has added a Platinum model to the Escalade Hybrid lineup and bills it as “the most technically advanced large luxury SUV yet.” As the world’s first large luxury hybrid SUV, the big Escalade delivers 20 miles per gallon around town, a 50 percent improvement over the non-hybrid model. Both the Escalade Hybrid and Platinum Hybrid are available in 2WD and 4WD configurations. The 2WD model can tow up to 5,800 pounds and the 4WD version slightly less at 5,600 pounds. The hybrid models include just about all of the standard comfort and convenience features that are standard on an Escalade, including an eight-inch touch-screen navigation system that displays performance readouts of the hybrid system. The 2010 Escalade Platinum Hybrid has a nice package of luxury, style and technology, including a distinctive front fascia and grille,

unique 22-inch wheels, Magnetic Ride Control technology, LED headlights and a DVD entertainment system with screens integrated in the front-seat headrests. Magnetic Ride Control is GM’s fastreacting suspension system and gives the Escalade Platinum Hybrid more precise body motion control. It is a real-time damping system that “reads” the road in one-millisecond intervals. It replaces conventional shocks with electronically controlled shocks filled with a synthetic fluid containing tiny iron particles. Under the presence of a magnetic charge, the iron particles align to provide damping resistance almost instantly. The LED headlights emulate the characteristics of natural daylight much more closely than traditional auto lighting. LEDs are environmentally friendly, with a usable life more than 20 times longer than traditional halogen bulbs. Inside the Escalade Platinum is the latest example of Cadillac’s return to handcrafted luxury detail. The instrument panel, center storage console and door trim are wrapped and stitched by hand. They feature decorative French seams that have an elegant, tailored look and feel. Materials include rich leather on the instrument panel, with

unique wood inlays and aluminum trim. Aniline leather is unique to the Escalade Platinum and is used to trim the first and second row seats. Contrasting-color stitching is used on the French seams for a distinctive, luxurious appearance. The seatbacks feature embroidered Cadillac wreath and crest insignias. The leather-covered seats are comfortable and convenient, and the power fold-and-tumble second-row seat allows easier access to the third-row seat. Additional standard interior features include Platinum-specific door sills and floor mats; a heated steering wheel; heated

and cooled cupholders, and a power liftgate that opens and closes with the touch of a button. Also, the DVD entertainment system adds screens integrated into each frontseat headrest, in addition to the existing roof-mounted screen. Base price on the 2010 Cadillac Escalade Platinum is $88,140. Ron Beasley is the automotive editor for Miami’s Community Newspapers. He may be contacted by calling 305-662-2277, ext. 261, or by addressing email correspondence to <LetsTalkCars@aol.com>.
