Miami Beach Commission Moves Forward with Convention Center Renovation and Enhancement
Y
BY DANIEL WHALEN
ears of talk are turning into action. On We d n e s d a y, December 12, the Miami Beach Commission voted to continue with the Miami Beach Convention Center renovation and expansion project. This update will help the Convention Center continue to host world-class events such as Art Basel as well as add events to its calendar. The Convention Center was last renovated in 1989, and in recent years has lost convention clients such as Microsoft for lack of adequate technology. The City of Miami Beach is a top 3 destination, but the Convention Center only ranks 30th nationally. The renovation is meant to catapult it back to a viable venue. Current plans for renovation and enhancement would include updates to the building itself, the construction of an adjacent hotel to house event attendees, as well as mixed-use development of the area that will become the 52-acre convention center district. The vision is one of a vibrant, walkable community that is pleasing to Miami Beach residents and fits seamlessly with nearby communities and businesses. The top two teams are accepted, and were selected after close consideration by the commission and the evaluation committee. The finalists are: PortmanCMC and South Beach ACE. PortmanCMC is composed of Portman Holdings, developer of the Peachtree Center in Atlanta, partnered with Miami

The Rosann Sidener Way. It’s not my way; it’s the Beach High Way.” “The Beach High Way is putting kids first,” she continued. “[It] is celebrating diversity. The Beach High Way is to make

Letter from the Chair BY ALAN A. LIPS It’s with great pleasure that I take the opportunity in this message to write about a true community hero. It is not enough that the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce honored Dr. Rosann Sidener at its last Dinner Gala with the esteemed Jan Pfeiffer Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Sidener deserves so much more! For those of you who have not been fortunate enough to have either met Dr. Sidener or followed her career , let me take a moment to educate you. As principal of Beach High, not only did Dr. Sidener improve the graduation rate by more than 25%, but she successfully brought Beach High from a “D” to an “A” school. She created numerous programs enhancing the quality of education and overall experience producing young adults that will be contributing citizens in our great community. No community can exist, let alone thrive, without certain basic elements. A great high school is critical to the long-term success of any community. It creates a sense of loyalty and pride among existing residents and is a magnet for prospective new residents, while at the same time plays a crucial role in shaping the community’s future economic outlook. Our city’s future is brighter as a direct result of Dr. Sidener’s hard work and success at Miami Beach Senior High. One of the Chamber’s mission’s includes improving the quality of life for our residents. We as a Chamber have been committed to education for many years by raising money annually for our education foundation. Our education foundation provides the resources to help support the IB program at Beach High amongst many other local educational initiatives. As a Chamber, we have an obliga––––––––––––––––––––– See

Dr. Sidener has made Miami Beach Senior High School one of the best schools in Miami-Dade County by introducing new programs such as the International Baccalaureate School in March of 2010 and the Scholars Academy. These initiatives have given Beach High a new academic standing, along with a new image after the completion of a lengthy renovation process and incorporation of student uniforms . Dr. Sidener has a passion as an educator, having worked in several institutions in the Miami-Dade County Public School system, with experience ranging from assistant principal and principal in various Miami-Dade communities from West Kendall to Little Havana, Overtown and Miami Beach. Mount Sinai Medical Center welcomes back its tiniest patients Preemie Babies Reunite with Doctors and Nurses who cared for them at the Mount Sinai 17th annual “Preemie” Party On Friday, December 7th, Mount Sinai Medical Center welcomed back more than 100 patients for its 17th annual Preemie Party. This year’s “Under The Sea” themed celebration reunited babies who defied the odds in the Mount Sinai Abess Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and their parents, with the doctors and nurses who cared for them. “This is probably the highlight of my year,” Tony Adams, M.D. chief of the NICU department at Mount Sinai. “It’s a great opportunity to celebrate life.” Mount Sinai neonatologists, Jose Antonio Adams, M.D., and Ignacio Zabaleta, M.D., have worked together at Mount Sinai for more than two decades, taking care of babies from birth to discharge and providing a level of continuity rare in larger NICUs. “Every child is a miracle for us,” said Dr. Zabaleta. “It’s fantastic that God gave us the opportunity to save these little babies.” Among the returning patients, who ranged in age from babies to teenagers, was high school senior Alexis Levy and her parents, Stacy and Adam Levy. Alexis was born in the Mount Sinai NICU 18 years ago after just 29 weeks in the womb, 11 weeks premature, and weighing a little over two pounds. The Levys lived in Davie at the time and drove to

and from the hospital, every day, twice a day for the 59 days that Alexis was in the NICU. “I wouldn’t have delivered anywhere else,” said mother, Stacy Levy. “Dr. Zabaleta and Dr. Adams were the only two men I wanted treating my child. I was not ready, just because of distance, to cut those men out of my life by any means. I don’t know if I still am. They are household names in our home.” By the time Alexis turned 13, she wanted to find a way to thank the doctors who saved her life. In lieu of presents at her bat mitzvah, she asked her guests to donate money to Mount Sinai’s NICU department. She successfully raised over $4,300. A plaque and photo of her presenting the donation remains displayed in the Mount Sinai NICU to this day. “I want to thank my doctors for everything they did for me, my family and all the other families of preemie babies,” said Alexis. “I’m proof of their amazing work.” Today, Alexis is in the top 10% of her graduating class, a member of her school’s National Honors Society and is preparing to attend college in June. She wants to study
marketing and communications. The Mount Sinai NICU provides the highest level of neonatal care and adheres to stringent medical treatment standards. Compared to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Mount Sinai’s NICU survival rates for low birth
weight babies are above the national average. The annual Mount Sinai Preemie Party is held every December, a symbolic time to reflect on the triumphs of these tiny miracles and to remind everyone that, sometimes, the best gifts come in small packages.

Art Basel 2012 leaves a lasting impression (again) Art Basel entered its second decade in Miami Beach with a display of premier quality works and strong programming across the city The 2012 edition of Art Basel in Miami Beach officially closed on Sunday, December 9th. Praised by critics, exhibitors and visitors as Art Basel’s most serious presentation in Miami Beach to date, its galleries across the board reported consistent sales throughout the week. The show, whose main sponsor is UBS, again attracted 50,000 visitors, generating an attendance of 70,000 over the five show days. Art Basel in Miami Beach was visited by over 130 museum and institution groups from across the world. Renowned private collectors from the Americas, Europe and emerging markets returned, and were joined by new collectors from around the globe. As Art Basel marked its second decade in Miami Beach, more than 250 leading galleries from 31 countries from North America, Latin America, Europe and Asia presented the highest quality of work at the show, underlining its seriousness. Given a particularly strong representation of Modern material at the show, as well as the entry of a dynamic selection of younger galleries – including nine that were newly accepted to the fair from NADA– visitors explored 11 decades and over 110 years of art history within the Miami Beach Convention Center. Additionally, collaborations with local and international partners ensured a diverse and deep program of art events, from Art Basel Conversations and Art Salon to Art Public, Art Video and Art Film, making this edition a celebration of the artists and their galleries. The experience of galleries proved highly positive: Stefania Bortolami of Bortolami Gallery in New York stated that “After the destruction that the gallery experienced from Hurricane Sandy it is significant that we were able to show at Art Basel Miami Beach. All of our efforts were rewarded by meaningful sales at the fair and wonderful exposure for our younger artists.” Alia Fattouh of Lombard Freid Gallery in New York added “I would say that the fair comes at a crucial time for many New York

galleries that have been hit by the hurricane and the flexibility that Art Basel showed in these exceptional circumstances has been particularly appreciated and helpful.” Speaking on behalf of Hauser and Wirth, which spans Zurich, London and New York, Marc Payot praised this year’s event. “At a moment when art fairs are almost too numerous to count, Art Basel Miami Beach stands out in attracting an extraordinary number of museum curators and directors from across the entire United States and around the world. With that in mind, we presented an exhibition-like stand that brought clarity and very high impact to new works by just two artists - Roni Horn and Guillermo Kuitca. We are now engaged in talks about several important institutional projects for both artists. So for Hauser & Wirth, this year’s fair was a major success not only in commercial terms, but also in the opportunity to connect our artists’ with museums internationally.” To learn more about what’s in store for the highly-anticipated 2013 Art Basel, visit www.miamibeach.artbasel.com.

Association, the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce and the Miami Beach Convention Center Advisory Board. Developers, architects and investors have been vying since January to design and plan the project. Special thanks to Miami Beach Mayor Matti Bower and Interim City Manager Kathie Brooks for their leadership in achieving this important first step. Of the eight teams that submitted bids, two teams will now move on to meet with the community, craft development plans and propose financing. A first community meeting with the developers is expected next month. Each team likely has about six months before the next City Commission vote on which has the best proposal, at which time designs and funding plans will be clearer. GMCVB Staff Works to Assure Greater Miami and the Beaches is One of Two Finalists Vying to Host the 2017 World Outgames Greater Miami and the Beaches has been selected as one of two finalists to host the 2017 World Outgames. The other finalist is Reykjavik, Iceland. No U.S. city has ever hosted a World Outgames. GMCVB Associate Vice President of Cultural Tourism George Neary and GMCVB Senior Vice President of Convention Sales Barry Moskowitz joined a coalition of civic leaders with extensive backgrounds in community events who banded together to submit the bid for Greater Miami and the Beaches. The 13 members of the Miami Beach-Miami Sports & Cultural League, Inc., are active members in the South Florida LGBT community with widespread expertise in human rights, cultural and sporting events, activities and organizations. The World Outgames is sponsored by the Gay and Lesbian International Sport Association and takes place every four years in a different global city. Previous hosts have been Montreal and Copenhagen with the 2013 games slated for July and August 2013 in Antwerp, Belgium. Outgames are open to all who wish to participate, without regard to sexual orientation, and all competitions are arranged according to the skill level of the athletes. Cultural and human rights components make the event a well-rounded experience for athletes and non-athletes alike.
KNIGHT FOUNDATION GRANT FUNDS PERFORMANCES AT MIA On December 3, 2012, Miami International Airport (MIA) was named one of 34 winners in the 2012 Knight Arts Challenge Miami, sponsored by the Knight Foundation. MIA was chosen from more than 1,100 applications to receive a $40,000 grant that will help fund music performances inside the airport through 2014. The new program will provide passengers with musical flavors from South Florida and around the world, with the first performance planned for early 2013. The performances will be incorporated into a larger program at MIA that features visual art exhibitions ranging from fine art to cultural projects focused on global issues. The Miami-Dade Aviation Department has already partnered with the Knight Foundation to organize more than 60 “Random Acts of Culture” (unexpected performances by musicians and dancers in plain clothes) at the airport since December 2011.

TIPS FOR THE HOLIDAY... market info and techno gadgets
BY ALEKSANDRA MARZEC
Are you in the market for a new home? Have you thought about purchasing land and building your dream home or possibly taking on a major tear-down/rebuild renovation? Rising costs could play an important consideration in your decision. This past year’s new home construction ended with a robust rebound since the housing slump, with lumber and cement costs rising considerably. According to the Associated General Contractors of America, the cost of interior walls for new homes has increased between November of 2011 and November 2012 significantly to 14%. Suppliers of drywall prices have notified the building industry that prices may jump an additional 30% in 2013. The cost pressure is coming from suppliers and labor, which will in turn, create a price increase to cover the costs. This trend began in 2012 and will be on the upswing in 2013. In addition to the cost increases the gain in prices is also affected by the home construction industry’s attempt to rebuild profit margins. Profits were at an all time low and businesses are now trying to regain their margins. The benefits of purchasing existing inventory are unmatchable. The beauty of Miami Beach and the varied options for luxury living are exceptional. The waterfront and ocean inlet areas provide a broad range of beautiful condominiums - The Portofino Towers ... Murano and Portofino, the ICON, The Murano Grande, The Apogee, The Continuum buildings I and II... are just a few of the treasures of the South Beach waterfront. Another very unusual and exciting option is the Porsche Design Tower Miami: “Defining a new paradigm, Porsche Design has been an important key player in shaping and defining new trends for four decades, now Porsche Design is applying their sophistication in design into setting a new paradigm in luxury living. Renowned developer Michael and Gil Dezer of Dezer Development has teamed up with Porsche Design to craft a masterpiece of luxury oceanfront real estate that is not only raising the bar as to what ‘luxury living’ entails but also completely redefining the standards by which other competitors are measured. The result of this collaboration is an exceptional architectural concept that has not been seen and a first of its kind. A combination of timeless architecture lines with Porsche Design’s roots in automotive engi-
neering. In every residence’s design concept, car elevators play a central role. The idea: seamless transition between outer world and living environment. For expectations that go beyond exclusivity. An exclusive collection of 132 oceanfront sky residences; consisting of flats and doubleheight layouts, expansive living balconies with sweeping Ocean and Intracostal vistas. Floor-to-ceiling glass throughout and every imaginable luxury within.” Interested in a single family home? The incredible range of unique architecture from Art Deco, Streamline Modern, and Nautical Modern to Mediterranean Revival and Eclectic mid century Tudor style … so much incredible character and history to choose from in your next home purchase. Making your list and checking it twice … ? You better watch the market as luxury homes are selling fast - prices are on the rise as availability shrinks in numbers. Add technology tools to your list. There are many new technologies available to realtors today. MagicPlan enables the smart phone camera to create floor plans, calculate dimensions, arrange the rooms on a grid and send to contacts. Videloicious provides video shooting and editing capabilities that include narrations, captions and slide shows. 360 Panorama shoots pictures at specific intervals and combines into one file. The $outh Florida Gaming Report Happy New Year BY ISADORE HAVENICK
This column will take a break from our usual subject matter to wish everyone a very happy and healthy New Year, and to bestow some awards upon a few “deserving” organizations. THE THANK YOU AWARD goes to the Miami Heat for putting a championship team on the floor for the fans of Miami, and more importantly for conducting their operations with class and dignity. From the ownership to the front office to the coaching staff to every player that puts on a Heat uniform this is a team that makes Miami proud on and off the basketball court. This is a team that looks, acts, and feels like a cohesive unit on the floor and through the constant civic involvement of the players and coaching staff. Bravo!
THE NO THANK YOU AWARD goes to the Miami Marlins for conning an entire city and selling us a bogus bill of goods. Three quarters of the way through their inaugural season in a taxpayer financed stadium, the Marlin organization pulled the financial plug. The team was not playing well for a variety of reasons, but the team that will take the field in 2013 is an insult to this community. Individually every player will give you one-hundred percent effort every day, but the ownership team has provided the fans with little firepower to compete. The few top line players left have, for the most part, publically asked to be traded. It is a sad state of circumstances, and a beautiful new stadium will look and feel like an empty box for most of the 81 games scheduled to be played at Marlins Park next season. On most days, fans of the visiting team will outnumber the hometown fans. Season ticket holders and sponsors alike were duped by a sales pitch that sounded, and in the end was, too good to be true.

Bike lanes and beachwalks pave the way for Miami Beach’s growth and expansion Infrastructure improvements are taking place all over Miami Beach in a bid to continually upgrade and improve the city for residents and visitors alike. It is a construction geek’s dream, dozens of ongoing projects dotting the Miami Beach landscape and bringing new life to streets, parks, main thoroughfares, tennis courts, piers, parking garages, bridges and tunnels. Over the past, and next few months, these are just a few of the improvement projects that have been completed or are underway in the city: The City of Miami Beach commission has approved a $4.9 million construction project with the Weitz Company to build a pier at South Pointe Park, the southernmost park in Miami Beach, with views of Fisher Island and an outpost of famous steak eatery, Smith & Wollensky. Construction will begin in January 2013 and will take one year. A shared bicycle and pedestrian path is under construction and will run adjacent to the Collins Canal along Dade Boulevard from the Venetian Causeway to the Beachwalk at 21st St. and Collins Avenue. The path will link ritzy Venetian Causeway, home to the Standard Hotel and million dollar homes, to the tourist heavy, walk-friendly Collins Avenue where visitors can find the W and Setai hotels, the Bass Museum and beautiful Collins Park. Enhanced landscaping will include a concrete jersey-style barrier wall covered in vines, which will soften and ‘green’ the appearance of the barrier. Miami Beach has opened its first robotic parking garage at 1826 Collins Avenue. The robotic garage is one of the first in the country. Cars disappear and reappear from its automated metal doors in the first robotic garage in Southeast Florida. A three level storefront will provide retail space. The Lincoln Lane North Project, a bid to develop two or three city-owned parking lots to the north of world-famous Lincoln Road, will soon be in the hands of developers as the city moves ahead with plans to build out the street. Lincoln Road can benefit from the additional lots as the pedestrian-only thoroughfare is the new home of H&M, Forever 21 and popular restaurants including Shake Shack, Serendipity and 5 Napkin Grill among many other retailers and eateries.
Two firms are currently competing to win a contract for a one billion dollar redevelopment of the Miami Beach Convention Center and surrounding area. The new site will include condos, shops, parks, office towers and restaurants on 52 acres in the heart of South Beach. The Convention Center already hosts the international Art Basel Miami Beach fair but expects even more high-profile events after the redevelopment. Plus these additional improvements p rojects are underway or have been recently completed: Last November the City completed a renovation of the North Beach Bandshell Facility. The scope included structural repairs, expansion of the backstage facilities, acoustical upgrades, electrical and lighting improvements, and stage extension. An ideal venue for cultural and communal events, the Bandshell is now home to the city’s Food Truck Festival, movie nights, and community fairs. Future plans for the Bandshell include landscape and lighting upgrades, as well as walkway improvements. South Courts at Flamingo Park Holtz Tennis Center: This project includes the reconstruction of 17 clay courts, a new tennis center and new lighting and drainage. The estimated completion date is summer 2013. Zaha Hadid Garage: This world-renowned architect has agreed to join her other starchitect colleagues in designing and building a parking garage for Miami Beach. Kayak Launch at Pine Tree Park: Construction is underway of a kayak launching area and associated shoreline improvements with a walkway for the public park. The work consists of specialized marine construction including dredging and earthworks to create a sloped kayak launch area. Sunset Harbor Garage: Recently built parking garage in the booming Sunset Harbor neighborhood with hip retailers and restaurants inhabiting its lower spaces.
