Bill Johnson Chosen to Receive Excellence in Tourism Award

Fashion Week Returns to Miami Beach
M
iami Beach International Fashion Week celebrates its 13th anniversary featuring fashion collections by designers from all over the globe. Owned and operated by Sobol-Perry Fashion Productions, Inc., this year’s show will be held from March 3-6, 2011, at the Miami Beach Convention Center. During the past 12 years, Miami Beach International Fashion Week has evolved into the largest international fashion event in the United States, and Miami Beach is proud to be the location for such a globally recognized event. This year’s show will feature designers from all over the world including Italy, Spain, Malaysia, BETH SOBOL Pakistan, Lebanon, Canada, Eastern Europe, the Caribbean, Middle East, the United States and more. Letter from the Chair Recently, I had the pleasure of taking a private tour of the Zappos headquarters in Las Vegas and gaining insight from their team leaders. I had not personally used Zappos’ services (my wife does enough damage in the shoe shopping department), but I knew they were renowned for their customer service. During my visit, I realized that it was way more than customer service for this company, but a true desire to connect with its clientele. One tale described how a Zappos representative spent nearly six hours on the phone with a customer, carefully understanding and addressing her needs to find the perfect shoe for an upcoming occasion. That’s serious care, but one of many examples of the company living up to its mission of providing the best customer service possible. Making it even more astounding is that Zappos is internet-based. The experience reinforced for me that it’s not simply about customer service, but employee service. Mission statements and core values aren’t created because they sound good to investors - they are meant to be enlivened. This includes a core focus on your company’s most important assets: the people. As with any asset, you must invest in them: Training: People do well when they feel confident. Whether new hires or teaching existing personnel new tasks, allot extra time for in-depth training that covers your company culture, job specifics and a variety of

• COMMISSIONER’S CORNER • Miami Beach Becomes More Green BY VICE MAYOR MICHAEL GONGORA
As the Chair of the Sustainability Committee I am extremely proud of the implementation of the City’s Sustainability Plan. When I created the Green Ad Hoc Committee (now referred to as the Sustainability Committee), one of the goals was to create a Sustainability Plan for the City of Miami Beach. One of those goals was reached on January 19, 2011 when the City of Miami Beach passed its Sustainability Plan. This marks an important step towards enhancing the environmental, social and economic health of our community. The passing of the Sustainability Plan also illustrates the great importance of the environment to Miami Beach residents and visitors. I would like to share some of the highlights of the Sustainability Plan. The purpose of the Sustainability Plan is to guide the community to plan and act more sustainably by providing structure to its long-term and short-term resource management and policy decisions. The Sustainability Plan provides structure and focus to existing and future green policies and initiatives. The purpose of the Plan is to improve and preserve our resources, prevent harm to the natural environment, protect human health, and benefit the social, economic, and environmental well being of the community for present and future generations. The objective of the City of Miami Beach’s Sustainability Plan is to assist the City in accomplishing its Key Intended Outcome (KIO) of enhancing environmental sustainability and also guide the Sustainability Committee in its mission. The Plan is comprised of ten (10) Program Areas that are the topics within which to concentrate economic, environmental and social improvement efforts.
THE PROGRAM AREAS INCLUDE: • Green Building & Housing • Solid Waste Management • Water Conservation & Quality • Energy Conservation • Alternative Transportation • Natural Resources & Ecosystem Management • Community Outreach & Civic Participation • Green Procurement • Economic Development & Planning • Air Quality & Climate Change The City of Miami Beach has made progress in regards to sustainable initiatives. Some of the highlights of existing city sustainable initiatives consist of the development of the Stormwater Master Plan, Dune Enhancement Program with volunteers to restore protective dunes, Marine debris removal program by waterway contractor, Ameresco Energy Audit and Performance Contracting that will reduce energy and water consumption by municipal buildings, reduce carbon footprint, reduce energy costs, Green Building voluntary program that allows private entities to save on permit fees while reducing energy, waste, and water use impacts of building infrastructure. In regard to Alternative Transportation, we have created the Atlantic Greenway Network system of recreational corridors and bike paths that support alternative transportation, cleaner air, less congestion, less consumption of fuel and the implementation of the Bike Share program. Lastly, in regard to Solid Waste, the Committee is working on the development of a citywide recycling ordinance that would allow mandate recycling within the City. I would like to personally thank the environmental staff of the City and the members of the Sustainability Committee for their hard work and dedication in creating the Sustainability Plan. I look forward to a great year filled with progress!

Up-and-Coming Business Leaders Dominate at Competition BY JESSE KIRKPATRICK Senior at Miami Beach Senior High School
Congratulations are in order to Miami Beach Senior High Future Business Leaders of America students, who took home 33 trophies at the District competition. These outstanding students will be travelling to Orlando for the State Leadership Conference and competition at the end of April. Members of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), the world’s largest business student organization, participate in business competition and engage in service projects in the school and community. In order to outperform the competition and make it to States, members must hit the books for their events, which range from Public Speaking to Entrepreneurship, Business Communications to Sports Management. In the weeks before Districts, FBLA members pored over their business textbooks, took practice tests, and practiced solving real-life business problems. Beach High FBLA President Gabriela Lins facilitated the study process by organizing meetings and pairing newer with more senior members to train them in their competitions. “Having the board members assist the competitors with their events played a tremendous role in the success of our chapter this year,” said Lins, who will be competing in the Client Service competition at States. Beach High did achieve impressive success, even in the face of much larger FBLA chapters like Mater Academy and Coral Gables High. Also contributing to Beach High’s accomplishment was the significant crossover from other school clubs and academies. Because the team had experience in debate, they were able to apply their skills to a business situation. “Students who typically would not have wanted to pursue a career in business were able to bring a new perspective and, in the process, learn about the integral role of business in any career,” said Lins. Beach High students also placed first in such competitions as Business Math, Business Communications, Business Procedures, Marketing, and Parliamentary Procedures, among others. FBLA members also have the opportunity to pursue community service projects and submit reports, which are judged and awarded at the State competition. Last year, the Beach High Partnership with Business project placed first at States and moved onto the National competition. This year, Vice President Lucia Rynka, whose team of three placed first in the Management Decision Making competition, is spearheading a partnership with the Bass Museum, along with Miami Beach Senior High art student Allie Perry and a committee of students. The event is called “Art for Heart”, and it will combine entertainment and health into a day fit for the whole family. On February 27, heart-themed works of art created by Beach High art students will be displayed at the Bass Museum, and the top pieces will be awarded. Event-goers will have the opportunity to learn about health and fitness, view student art, explore innovative approaches to fitness like the interactive video game Dance Dance Revolution, and attend a health-themed Bass Museum Family Day. Local health-conscious businesses have provided sponsorships. “Allie and I hope to promote not only the importance of art, but also the necessity of being in good shape and having a healthy heart,” said Rynka. “With art, anything can be taught.”

Life is good, especially in Miami Beach‌..and we are going to prove it. Encouraged by Jason Loeb, Chairman of the Board of Governors and Jerry Libbin, President and CEO of the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce, I will be starting a bi-weekly life style column in this publication with emphasis on the Hospitality Industry. We intend to find what and where locals like to eat, where they like to drink and where they go to enjoy a good cigar. There will be no limitations when it comes to finding the better things in life. Being a strong advocate and supporter of the slow food movement will not deter nor limit our quest to find the best pastrami on rye. Our articles will be more of a report than a critique; sometimes they will have recipes while others a bit of history. We would like them to be informative, entertaining and with the help and input from members of the community, we should even be able to determine the best parking solutions. After writing columns and articles on a weekly basis for over 10 years, the concept of bi-weekly is most appealing, almost as appealing as not owning a restaurant. After taking the food and wine courses in the graduate program at the Florida International University School of Hospitality and at Johnson and Wales, it seemed obvious that opening a restaurant was the way to go. This was a most hum-
bling experience. One that made me really appreciate the people in the industry and their hard work. Both, the weekly columns and running a restaurant are incredible experiences that will not be repeated. Since we are not traveling as much, our visits to my favorite restaurant, Arzak in San Sebastian, Spain will be missed, almost as much as the view from La Pergola in Rome, and the unpretentious simplicity of St. John in London. It seems like it will be a while before we visit the vineyards in Chile during harvest season and get to enjoy the aroma of aging cigar leaves in the Dominican Republic. Traveling with a group of chefs throughout Italy and winning first prize for making the best pizza in Napoli, was not too shabby either. However, not to worry, a few of the locals have already given us some great tips on where to go and what to eat and drink. We are looking forward to visiting a great deli, having succulent stone crabs, tasting the food prepared by celebrity twin chefs, revisiting one of the best “underground� wine cellars in the country and tasting a new twist on the traditional vaca frita. We may not have the view of the Seven Hills of Rome, (for that matter, we do not even have hills), but the views of our ocean and beaches are just as spectacular. You will be reading about all of them soon. I have the feeling that at least from the gastronomical side, it will not be hard to find why life is good in Miami Beach.

Be considerate with others, obey the law while on the city’s boardwalk and beachwalk BY JOSE SMITH
City Attorney The City’s boardwalk and beachwalk are among our most spectacular recreational amenities. On any given day, we see people jogging, walking or watching the ocean. There are mothers with baby strollers, youngsters with I-pods and elderly on benches reading newspapers. Unfortunately, this small piece of paradise is often tarnished by those inconsiderate few who ignore our laws. Bicycles, Segways and skateboards rapidly squeeze by without regard to people’s safety, often, at high speeds and in close proximity to children and elderly. Unlike the beachwalk, the boardwalk is narrow and congested with little room to maneuver a bicycle. Thus, City Code Section 82-438 makes it “unlawful for any person to operate any wheeled conveyance” on the boardwalk. Even on the beachwalk, where bicycles and skateboards are permitted, Code Section 70-69 requires riders to use caution at all times and particularly when pedestrians are present: “Whenever any person is riding a bicycle, skateboarding, in-line skating, or roller skating, such person shall engage in such activity at a controlled speed which does not endanger the safety of pedestrians or others, shall yield the right-of-way to
any pedestrian, and shall give an audible signal before overtaking and passing such pedestrian.” Because of the risk of serious injury, and the increasing number of complaints, the City is committed to enforcing the law. One of the best things about exercise is that there’s so many different ways to do it. Now, I’m probably dating myself, but one of my passions used to be “Jazzercize,” which I took when “A Chorus Line” was still on Broadway. I used to lose myself in the song “One Singular Sensation,” imagining myself as a showgirl. Believe me, with my five-foot-frame, this will never happen, but, for those few minutes in class, I was a star. The point is this: Dancing not only feels good, it’s terrific exercise as well, so it’s no wonder dance-oriented fitness classes are so popular, no matter what your age or your gender. Well, not quite gender. Dance classes are usually almost all female, but I notice at Equinox South Beach, where I train, the guys are catching on. Here’s the top reasons why dancing is such a good all around exercise: Flexibility. We tend to focus on muscles and strength, but, as I learned from Michelle, my personal trainer at Equinox South Beach, flexibility is a major key to fitness. Dance requires a great range of motion. Most classes begin with a fair amount of stretching, which also enhances flexibility as well. Strength: Lifting barbells isn’t the only way to get strong; dancing builds strength because your muscles are forced to resist your own weight. Many styles of dance also require leaping in the air, and jumping and leaping require the use of major leg muscles. Need more proof that dancers need to be strong? Go see “Black Swan.” Endurance: Dancing builds endurance. Endurance is the ability of muscles to work for increasingly long periods of time without becoming fatigued. What’s particularly great about dancing is that, if you’re just getting in shape, you can start slow and build up. Weight Loss: Dancing burns calories. If you have any doubt, catch the Video Dance Jam Class that’s offered at Equinox. I took this one with J. Marcos, and he put me through such paces that I was sweating up a storm, and having a great time as well.

Andriola owns the award winning restaurant Timo in Sunny Isles Beach. Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce Women’s Business Council Women, Wine & Cheese All Getting “Better With Age” BY KATHLEEN HARRIS HICKS
On Tuesday, February 1, 2011, The Women’s Business Council of the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce presented an evening entitled “Better With Age” at the De Rodriguez Ocean Restaurant in the Hilton Bentley Hotel. The event had a wine & cheese tasting theme, along with a panel discussion featuring three inspiring and trailblazing women, all of whom have become “better with age”. The esteemed panel included: Joy Malakoff, Senior Vice President, BankUnited, and Past Chair, Board of Governors, Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce (1993-96); Constance Collins Margulies, Founder of The Sundari Foundation, Inc. and the Lotus House Shelter for Women; Jeanne Westphal, President, Jeanne Westphal Associates, and Former Director, Hospitality Institute, Miami-Dade College International Hospitality Center. Ms. Westphal is also a former U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Tourism in the Carter Administration (1977-80). The discussion was moderated by DeAnne Connolly Graham, Director of Sales & Marketing, Welcome & Bienvenidos Visitor Magazines, and Incoming Chair of the Women’s Business Council. The evening began with the wine and cheese tasting reception in the first hour, poolside. The refreshments were provided by Leticia de Mello Bueno of Gastronomisti, in conjunction with the restaurant; all arrangements were handled with a fine touch by Irene D’Auria, the Events Coordinator for the establishment and Women’s Business Council member. The sunset backdrop provided a serene, South Beach “glow” to the gathering. Ms. Malakoff shared her experience of attending Radcliffe College in Massachusetts, then returning to Florida to marry and start a family, and later entering the workforce after graduating from the University of Miami, having raised young children. The “balancing act” that this undertaking required – working in the banking field, surrounded predominantly by male colleagues, and maintaining a family structure – may have been challenging at times, however it was clear that she finds joy in her work, helping customers in the banking arena. Ms. Margulies recounted her experience working in the corporate world, then finding her true calling as the founder of the Lotus House Shelter for Women. She is now living her passion through creating and operating a resource center that assists homeless women and children with transitional housing and support services. Ms. Westphal recalled traveling around the world, working diligently to promote tourism to the United States. She spoke of her rich experiences, partaking in the cultures of the various countries she was fortunate to have lived in. She gained numerous longlasting friendships and learned to work with “the boys” in a mostly male-dominated environment. The panelists were asked a variety of questions on topics related to their personal and professional growth. They were able to look back on their experiences at this time in their lives, and take stock of their present circumstances, while realizing that their work is far from done. All three ladies attested to how their current endeavors invigorate them and fuel their desire to keep going and achieve more. “Better With Age” was indeed an inspiring, educational experience for all attendees, and set a high bar for future programming to be produced by the Women’s Business Council. This event was presented in collaboration with the Miami Beach Commission for Women, with the goal of reaching out to women in our local community who would benefit from the valuable information presented in this format.

The winners of the “Architectural History of Miami Beach Photo Essay Contest” were officially announced on February 1, 2011 by Miami Beach Commissioner Jonah Wolfson. Commissioner Wolfson awarded prizes in the 1st through 5th grade category to J avier Menendez Vaz, North Beach Elementary, 1st Place; in Grades 6th through 8th: 1st Place – Josefina Luiz, Fienberg Fisher K-8 Center; 2nd Place – Maria Camila Cisneros, Nautilus Middle School; 3rd Placee – Everton Brown, Fienberg Fisher K-8 Center; in Grades 9th through 12th: 1st Place – Kira Feldman, Miami Beach Senior High School. The architectural theme was suggested by Miami Beach Mayor, Matti Bower who continues to be a strong public advocate for the unique architecture of Miami Beach. Students were asked to create a “photo essay” that describes a style of architecture
in Miami Beach, explaining why it is their favorite, and either why the particular building was important to Miami Beach or what made it special to the student. The student then identified a building or building element that best exemplified this architectural style. Their submissions were accompanied by three images, and included a narrative; elementary students were allowed to submit color drawings instead of photos. Prizes were provided by the Park Central Hotel, Jungle Island, Boucher Brothers Management, and The Hotel of South Beach. All prizes were donated by tourism partners of the In-Card, an initiative of the Mayor’s Blue Ribbon Task Force on Tourism that was launched by the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce early last year offering special values for both residents and tourists. Chef Emeril Lagasse has named Tim Doolittle to lead the kitchen as chef de cuisine at Emeril’s Miami Beach – the South Beach outpost of his namesake restaurant. ‘Miami-Dade miracle’ could vanish with more school funding cuts... BY ALBERTO CARVALHO

Winter 2010 Florida’s constitution is clear: It is the State’s “paramount duty” to provide all Florida children a “uniform” and “high quality” system of free public schools that allows students to obtain a “high quality” education. Recent history, however, is contradictory if equally clear: The State has steadily shifted its burden for this Constitutional mandate from Tallahassee to Florida’s 67 school boards and the communities—and taxpayers—they serve. Huge revenue losses from the ongoing global recession have only worsened the strain on Miami-Dade and other communities. At Miami-Dade County Public Schools, we have weathered the crisis by slashing budgets and streamlining operations even while raising academic standards and improving student performance. We have done it through a combination of smart planning and tough choices, guided by a values-based budget that puts our students’ best interest first. Some have dubbed our success “the Miami-Dade miracle,” but if state trends continue, our short-term miracle could vanish in the long-term. Without stable and adequate funding, the future of our students and our community’s economy will be at risk. When the Florida Legislature convenes in March, it must act boldly to keep Florida’s and Miami-Dade’s public education systems from suffering additional cuts that ultimately would threaten the state’s and county’s economies. This may sound like a doomsday scenario, but it is no exaggeration. We have known for some time that funding holes, now plugged by stopgaps, will turn to chasms this year once the stopgaps stop and only huge gaps remain. At risk is a potential shortfall of up to $266 million in funding to Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) for the 2011-2012 school year. We at M-DCPS are presenting the legislature an urgent agenda of smart measures to avert this catastrophe and address key budget and other issues: MAINTAIN LEVEL FUNDING FROM STATE Chronic funding shortfalls from the
state have forced M-DCPS to slash nearly half a billon dollars from its budget since 2007-2008. Through greater efficiencies and a laser focus on the classroom, we have managed to balance our budget; cut central administration and support services by more than 40 percent, with M-DCPS now ranking among the leanest districts in the state; boosted reserves by more than $125 million; avoided employee layoffs; and raised student test scores dramatically. We cannot cut further without impacting programs and still maintain the high quality of education our students now receive. The state must maintain its current level of funding or risk undermining the district’s longterm stability and improvement. To maintain level funding, the state must replace federal stimulus monies currently in school district funding. Since 2009 the state has plugged M-DCPS funding holes totaling $246 million in part with stimulus funds through the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Those funds will dry up come June. Tallahassee must replace those funds with state revenue. ELIMINATE PENALTIES RELATED TO CLASS-SIZE REDUCTION COMPLIANCE Voters amended the state constitution in 2002 to require the state to bring class sizes to acceptable levels. The state has passed the onus to local school districts without fully funding it, even hitting districts with harsh financial penalties should they fall short of compliance. Tallahassee must eliminate these penalties until it gives districts full funding to meet the mandate. Avoid the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;If Onlyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Syndrome When Preparing for College BY PETER RATZAN
Far too often (especially at this time of year) I hear from parents who have come to see me, either at a workshop or in my office, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Gee, if only I had known about you a year or two agoâ&#x20AC;?. These are good folks who could have implemented strategies to better position their child for merit and need-based financial assistance, or were the recipient of misguided advice from their childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s guidance counselor and never even considered some truly excellent, but lesser-known, schools that would have been both a better fit and more generous with merit and financial aid. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important that you and your child get an early start on the college process, as in 10th or 11th grade. Waiting until the summer before 12th grade, or even in the fall when application deadlines are approaching, may not only result in a bad fit college for your child, but it may also cost a family thousands of dollars (this is no exaggeration). The FAFSA and CSS Profile applications will look at the prior yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s income when evaluating your financial aid eligibility, so if your child is currently an 11th grader then you are â&#x20AC;&#x153;on the clockâ&#x20AC;? now, until December 2011. The sooner you take action, the better your chances of getting a more generous financial aid award because you can avoid the â&#x20AC;&#x153;lookbackâ&#x20AC;? period. Throughout the country and around South Florida, students are under tremendous pressure to do well on the SAT or ACT, to keep their grades up, to get involved in extra-curricular activities, and to complete their community service requirements. This pressure comes from within, it comes from peers, teachers and counselors, and it comes from parents. Meanwhile, parents are lying awake at night feeling the pressure of the impending college expense, often imploring their kids to search for scholarships to ease the burden. But private scholarships only represent about 2-3% of the $150 billion total amount of money available. The bulk of the money is in the need-based financial
aid system, which is available to â&#x20AC;&#x153;forgotten middle classâ&#x20AC;? families earning over $100,000 per year. This is where you as parents can and should take action on your own so that whatever college your child chooses can be affordable. You donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to have that dreaded conversation in April of 12th grade, explaining to your child that you cannot afford to send them to Top Choice U. The good news for 10th and 11th grade parents is that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m holding a free workshop on this subject on Wednesday, March 23, at 6:30 pm at the Pinecrest Community Center in Pinecrest.
