The Public Weighs In
Letter from the Chair BY ALAN A. LIPS
Attention to details vital in Convention Center development BY COMMISSIONER DEEDE WEITHORN
“If you make a place the residents like, the tourist will love it,” said Jeffrey Sachs as he kicked off the first of several public meetings in which the top two ranking developers for the redevelopment of the Miami Beach Convention Center and City officials were listening and taking notes from the input of the community. Over 200 residents, community leaders, designers, and public officials packed the
two meeting rooms in the Miami Beach Convention Center where it’s very own future was being discussed. Those in attendance shared a common goal to turn our class C convention center into a competing class A venue. To achieve this goal Sachs presented a short list of amenities that may be incorporated as part of the facility which was last renovated in 1989. These include: • 60,000 square feet ballroom • 100,000 sq. ft. breakout meeting space • 800+ room hotel • Replace parking • Include outdoor parking • Compatible public amenities
Clearly residents, who became the protagonists of the meeting, favored the redevelopment of the Convention Center only if it comes without sacrifices or concessions from the public’s quality of life. Many reiterated the idea that a redeveloped Convention Center should offer public benefits to the community making it a facility for both visitors and residents to enjoy. Among the issues taking center stage at the meeting were concerns over traffic and green space. Residents of the neighboring Collins Park, Palm View, Bayshore, and Flamingo Park neighborhoods expressed –––– See

The Miami Beach Chamber is nearly 100 years old – and it is expected that within an organization of such history and stature excellence is cultivated. Last week, we had the incredible opportunity to celebrate the best of the best from our local business talent. The 2013 Champions of Business Awards Luncheon took place on January 29th at the Eden Roc Renaissance Miami Beach. With close to 400 in attendance, the event was a huge success. This year’s event honored Past Chamber Chairman and Sudsies President, Jason Loeb, proprietor of The Forge, Shareef Malnik, and NBA sports agent, David Sugarman of Sugartime Sports, Inc. The honorees received The James McDonnell Outstanding Board of Governor Award, The Aaron B. Perry Innovation in Business Award, and the Small Business of the Year Award, respectively. The luncheon attracted both television and sports celebrities, and all who attended enjoyed the venue, the food, and, of course, the award presentations and the messages delivered by our talented honorees. Once again, to no surprise, the Chamber put on a wonderful event to highlight stars of the local business community and dedicated Miami Beach community members. This event is just one of hundreds hosted by the Chamber each year. Of course, the Miami Beach Chamber is a great way to boost your business and get involved in the community, but what’s even more, you can take advantage of the glamour and brilliance of Miami Beach’s venues! Take the leap and experience the power of membership if you haven’t already! And for all the Chamber members, take advantage of all the fun, practical and business-building benefits that are all part of your Chamber membership! At Your Service, Alan A. Lips

CONVENTION CENTER, from page 1 valid concerns pertaining to traffic congestion. Others used the opportunity to stress the importance of connectivity to other modes of transportation at the redeveloped Convention Center to include bicycle, parking, car sharing, and public transportation facilities. Among the discussions pertaining to traffic flow, many residents pleaded with the development teams to pursue designs which provide self-contained loading docks and parking infrastructure minimizing its impacts to neighboring public venues including the Miami Beach Botanical Garden, the Holocaust Memorial, and SoundScape Park. Environmental sensitivity was among the concerns raised by residents who wish for the Convention Center building to be LEED certified. Equally important, residents stressed the need for green open spaces and their reluctance to the full development of the 52 acre site. Residents made their voices heard loud and clear: quality over quantity; this was especially important for the areas in closer proximity to the perimeter of the residential neighborhoods. Residents deliberated their thoughts on the potential development of the 17th Street Garage, City Hall, and the neighboring Parking Lot. However, no consensus was achieved regarding the Fillmore at Jackie Gleason Theater. While some believe that the site should be incorporated as part of a new 800 room hotel others believe that the building is an iconic part of Miami Beach history. Certainly, this will be an issue for debate and one in which the community’s continued input will be much needed. Perhaps the most acclaimed comment of the evening came from Collins Park Neighborhood Association President Ray Breslin who urged the City government to hold itself to the same level of commitment and compliance that is expected from its private development partners. I

personally could not agree more and will do my part to ensure that the City is realistic in its goals and fulfills every promise made to the public as part of this project. If you missed the meeting it’s not too late to weigh in. You can follow the development process online at www.miamibeachfl.gov or can email your input to MBconventioncenter@miamibeachfl.gov. The next public community meeting is scheduled for February 27th at 6:00 pm in the Convention Center, meeting rooms D235/236. During this meeting, the proposers will present bubble diagrams and rough sketches for the development site plan. The following day, February 28th, the City Commission will give their input on the proposed site plan during a Commission Workshop scheduled for 3:00 pm in the City Commission Chambers at City Hall. As we move forward I hope that you may continue to join us at these meetings where everyone is welcome to join the conversation. Lastly, among those attending the kickoff meeting for the Convention Center development were the applicants for the position of City Manager for the City of Miami Beach. Surely, this will likely be the most important project that the new City Manager will be tasked to oversee and the early observation of the process will prove to be invaluable. Last Thursday, the City Commission narrowed the list of applicants down to three finalists which include: former Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jimmy Morales; Miami’s former Interim & Assistant City Manager Frank Rollason; and, Broward County’s Monica Cepero, an Assistant to the County Administrator. All three finalists bring to the table unique talents and perspectives. I look forward to making a final decision soon so that this community may benefit from the new City Manager’s professional experiences and talents in steering the Convention Center development forward.

CHAMPIONS OF BUSINESS, from page 1 Jerry Libbin, Miami Beach Chamber President and CEO, set the stage for the event, stating, “Today’s luncheon continues the Miami Beach tradition to recognize the accomplishments of outstanding business professionals who continue to strengthen the foundation of the community at large.” The first award, The James McDonnell Outstanding Board of Governors Award, was introduced by Stu Blumberg, a past Chamber Chairman. Mr. Blumberg described this award’s inspiration, “James McDonnell was a rare breed. His love and his passion for this community are unparalleled…Jim was the conscience of this Chamber.” Michael Milberg, another past Chamber Chairman, introduced Mr. Loeb and presented him the award in an engaging and interactive speech, calling him “Mr. Marketing” and highlighting his unmatched energy, enthusiasm and dedication to the Miami Beach community and the Chamber. Mr. Loeb took the stage to accept the award, thanking his wife Marni, his Sudsies team, the Miami Beach Chamber team and the other honorees. He challenged the audience to make Miami Beach an even better place this year, exclaiming, “Make it your home, make it the best place to be!” Current Miami Beach Chamber Chairman Alan Lips, described the qualifications for the next award, The Small Business of the Year Award, “This award honors members of the Chamber who started off with an idea, made it a reality, took it to the next level and raised the image of Miami Beach at the same time.” Ronnie Chalmers, Director of Basketball Operation at the University of Kansas, introduced David Sugarman, this year’s recipient. Mr. Chalmers explained that Mr. Sugarman has the “right attitude,” and that, “His attitude is simple. He wants to help people. He overcomes problems by defining, anticipating, evaluating and embracing the problem as potential.” David Sugarman, President and Founder of Sugartime Sports, Inc., took the stage to accept his award, congratulating the day’s other honorees and thanking Coach Chalmers, his family, his staff and all in attendance. He went on to say, “The one thing that I put everything into—my heart my beliefs, my time, my energy, my money, my connections and my health— all of it, I am standing here receiving an award and that means it’s all worth it.” Alan Lips described the next award,
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
stating, “The Aaron Perry innovation in business award was created to address the historical significance of innovation in business and the positive effect of the Chamber in our community as well as the accomplishments of our past Chairman, Aaron Perry.” This year’s recipient was Shareef Malnik, proprietor of The Forge and Miami Beach native. Mr. Malnik accepted the award, congratulated the other honorees and thanked Alan Lips, Jerry Libbin, his family and Gabrielle Anwar, who led an intimate question and answer chat with Mr. Malnik. The chat underlined Mr. Malnik’s deep roots in Miami Beach, including his father’s opening of The Forge in 1968. Mr. Malnik stressed the importance of individuality and the myopia of competition, saying “The better the health is of Miami Beach and Miami-Dade County, the better the health is of all of our business…We’re investing in a city of the future.” Ms. Anwar closed the conversations, stating simply, “You are an inspiration, not only as a business owner, but as a man.” Chamber Chairman Alan Lips served as the event’s master of ceremonies, highlighting the Chamber’s longevity, now at nearly 100 years old. He also thanked David Siguaw, Director of Sales and Marketing at the Eden Roc Renaissance Miami Beach, for the location sponsorship and his team’s impeccable execution. Rosary Plana Falero, represented Title Sponsor, BankUnited, and congratulated honorees and outlined the bank’s 2012 success, planned expansion, local roots and dedication to the Miami Beach community. AT&T Florida’s Maria Johnston congratulated honorees, and spoke of the importance of telecommunications upgrades emphasizing AT&T’s commitment to the best for its customers. Ms. Johnston closed with a call to the audience’s conscience, “Please don’t text and drive, it saves lives.” To no surprise, this year’s Champions of Business Awards Luncheon was again a raving success. Honorees, speakers and guests all enjoyed the event’s delicious cuisine, beautiful setting, exciting occasion and great company. The luncheon honored valued and successful Miami Beach community members, contributing to the Miami Beach Chamber’s mission to promote business development and highlight the benefits of a thriving business community.

Mark Wahlberg on his new film Broken City, bodybuilding and Transformers 4 BY LAUREN COHEN
Mark Wahlberg is a busy, busy man. He has the much-anticipated Michael Bay film, “Pain & Gain” — which he filmed in Miami with The Rock — coming out this April; “2 Guns” co-starring Denzel Washington being released this summer; as well as the true-story Navy SEAL flick “Lone Survivor” slated for some time this year. But before all that comes the slick political-thriller “Broken City.” In “Broken City,” Wahlberg plays Billy Taggart, an excop-turned-private eye who’s hired by the city’s mayor (Russell Crowe) to follow his cheating wife (Catherine Zeta-Jones). While speaking with Wahlberg, it was evident that he’s been passionate about this project since the second he started reading the script – so passionate, in fact, that he decided not only to star in it, but to produce as well. During our discussion, the Bostonnative also touched on his illustrious career, his propensity for playing cops, and the status of “Ted 2” and “Transformers 4.” Q: So how did you get involved with this project? Wahlberg: Allen Hughes, the director, had called me and asked if I had read the script – I was aware of the script but I hadn’t read it yet. So I read it right away, we met up and I said, ‘okay let’s do it…but not only do I want to act in it, but I want to produce it and I want to do it independently, because I don’t think it’ll be easy to do a movie like this under the watchful eye of a studio.’…I think maintaining creative control was far more valuable in the end. Q: The cast is incredible – Russell Crowe, Catherine Zeta Jones, Jeffrey Wright. Was it hard to get such big name actors on board? Wahlberg: You see the cast that we got because of the material. The script was so well written, and because we did it independently we weren’t really able to pay everybody what they would normally get paid. But they wanted to be involved because they loved the parts. Q: You’ve played a cop a few times throughout your career. What is it that draws you to these kinds of roles? Wahlberg: Well, a lot of movies are cops and crooks, good guys and bad guys. When I talk about the kind of movies that I compare them to — “Serpico” and “Chinatown” — these are the movies that I grew up watching…guys like [Humphrey] Bogart, James Cagney, Robert Ryan, Edward G. Robinson –
MOVIE REVIEW Bill Monahan, who wrote “The Departed,” is now writing the screenplay for us; it’s something that we have the rights to. I’m producing and I’m going to play John. We’ll shoot it here in Miami. It’s about the cocaine trade…and the rise of Miami, pretty much, while the rest of the country was damn near in a recession. Q: I love how you can go from acting to producing. Are you going to work on more television shows? Wahlberg: Yeah! Oh yeah. We start shooting two Docu-Series next weekend – both in Boston. One for the History Channel and one for A&E. We’re shooting two new pilots for HBO this spring, back for more “Boardwalk Empire.” We’ve got a pilot at ABC, a pilot at Fox, and a pilot at NBC. And other various movies at various stages of development.
Mark Wahlberg in Broken City –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– those were the kind of guys that I grew up play, and that I’ve continued to grow as watching with my dad. So those are the an actor and that I’m kind of now steerkind of movies that really kind of pique ing my own ship. But one of the ones that my interest. I’m probably most excited about is playing John Roberts, who was the subject of Q: You’re a very good athlete. I think it’s the “Cocaine Cowboys” documentary. impressive how you change physically for your roles. How do you go about doing that? Wahlberg: This year was the most Honesty • Integrity • Values • Respect • Knowledge • Ethics crazy year for me. I walked into a production meeting, and Allen was a little With roots in Miami close to half a century deep, freaked out by my physical appearance. GPR is one of South Florida’s leading full service And he asked if I could get as thin as possible for the movie. So I just started runaccounting firms with a global and innovative ning and playing basketball and started accounting approach. boxing again. So I got down to 165 pounds, and then I did “Pain & Gain” like 8 to 10 weeks after, and I had to get as big as I possibly could – playing a body builder – so I got up to 212 pounds. Then within 30 days I had to get back down to 180 to do “Two Guns” with Denzel. And then two weeks after that I was immersed in Navy SEAL training to play Marcus Luttrell in “Lone Survivor.” So that was what my year was like.
Q: Can you tell us anything about “Transformers 4” or “Ted 2”? Wahlberg: I could tell you that we’re doing “Transformers” starting at the end of May, and then “Ted” in September. You know I can’t give you too many story points or Michael will not be happy. But I can tell you that I’m very excited, obviously I had a great working relationship with Michael on “Pain and Gain.” Q: What would be your dream role? Wahlberg: Oh, I don’t know. You know, I’m just so appreciative of the opportunities I’ve had, the roles I’ve been able to

Miami City Ballet announces Program III: The Masters featuring Symphonic Dances by Alexei Ratmansky Miami City Ballet, Florida’s internationally acclaimed company, will present the repertory premiere of choreographer Alexei Ratmansky’s Symphonic Dances, a work commissioned by Miami City Ballet. The ballet will be performed (February 22-24) at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts in West Palm Beach before continuing on to the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale (March 1-3) and the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami (March 810). Symphonic Dances is the closing ballet for Miami City Ballet’s Program III: The Masters – which also features two masterworks by George Balanchine: the dramatic La Valse and the thrilling Tschaikovsky Pas de Deux — plus his enchanting The Steadfast Tin Soldier. Ratmansky, the Artist-in-Residence at American Ballet Theatre, was recently hailed by The New Yorker as “the man who is remaking ballet.” Commissioned by Miami City Ballet, Symphonic Dances had its world premiere as a Miami City Ballet one-night only gala event on March 1, 2012 with the renowned The Cleveland Orchestra at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts to much critical acclaim. The music Ratmansky chose to work with is Sergei Rachmaninoff’s final important work, his large-scale Symphonic Dances of 1941 – a work whose turbulent energy and deep emotion perfectly complement the dance qualities for which the company is famous. “There is no real story,” said Ratmansky. “I want the audience to leave with the images and feelings that the movement gives them.” Yet, again and again, the audience senses that there are hidden stories, conflicts and resolutions, propelling the large cast through the piece’s three gripping sections.
“Alexei Ratmansky’s Symphonic Dances is electrifying,” raved The Miami Herald. “A dramatic and physical whirlwind. Haunting and intoxicating. Tumultuously beautiful. A cheering, to-thebalconies standing ovation.” In George Balanchine’s La Valse, the stage is a dark and mysterious ballroom in which thirty-four dancers waltz in flowing romantic tutus to the gripping music of Maurice Ravel. It contains many dramatic elements that culminate with the appearance of a dark figure of Death who claims the life of a woman in white as the horrified on-lookers swirl about her upraised body. Meanwhile, in Balanchine’s The Steadfast Tin Soldier, set to the music of George Bizet, a tin soldier courts a lovely paper doll, gives her his heart, and then stands helplessly by as a draft of wind carries her into the fireplace. All that remains to be rescued from the fire is his heart, which he recovers and takes back with him to his stoic watching. Tschaikovsky Pas de Deux, set to the “lost music” from Swan Lake, Act III, features eight and a half minutes of Balanchine’s signature traits: his surprises, his complexities, his challenging quirks and combinations. Balanchine called it “a display piece based on the music and the maximum gifts of virtuoso performers.” Its dazzle suggests the best of Broadway. The Opus One Orchestra, under the direction of Principal Conductor Gary Sheldon, returns once again, thanks to a generous grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation as part of its Knight Arts Challenge. Tickets are now on sale by calling the Miami City Ballet Box Office at 305-9297010, toll-free 877-929-7010 or online at www.miamicityballet.org. The $outh Florida Gaming Report
Tribal Power BY ISADORE HAVENICK
All around the country, Indian gaming has been steadily gaining momentum and fostering large paydays for tribal members. Florida is no exception to this pattern. We have two tribes that operate gaming in Miami-Dade and Broward County. The Miccosukee tribe has a hotel, golf course, and slot casino operation out in western Dade County. The Seminole tribe operates many gaming venues, such as the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, which is the best known. The Miccosukee tribe operates without a compact with the State of Florida and pays no taxes. The Seminole tribe has a compact with the State of Florida that pays in excess of $200 million into the state’s
tax coffers. The Seminole compact has two major parts to it. One deals primarily with the game of blackjack, granting an exclusive state wide on this and like kind games. The other portion of the compact gives the Seminole tribe exclusivity on a specific class of slot machines outside of both counties. The two elements of the compact have terms of five and 20 years respectively. With the blackjack portion of the compact set to expire in 2014, the governor and legislature both have concerns that the tax revenues to the state from gaming interests do not contract. The simple question they face is whether to renew the blackjack portion of the existing compact or to risk losing the revenue and hopefully broker a better deal with the collection of pari-mutuel facilities statewide. This could potentially lead to more revenue and significant job creation around the state. Is a tribe in the hand worth a dozen pari-mutuels in the bush?

Mount Sinai Medical Center Hosts 11th Annual International Alzheimer’s Symposium
Dr. Ranjan Duara of Mount Sinai presents Marilyn Girsh with a plaque at the 11th annual MCI Symposium.
Medical experts from around the world gathered to discuss the latest breakthroughs in Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis and treatment during the 11th Annual Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) Symposium, hosted by The Wien Center for Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders at Mount Sinai Medical Center. The symposium, held on January 19th and 20th at the Miami Beach Resort and Spa, provided a forum for new information and in-depth discussions about upcoming clinical trials and advances in research related to the clinical diagnosis and progression of Alzheimer’s disease. This symposium is especially significant as current clinical research to find a cure for Alzheimer’s focuses on patients with MCI. People with MCI have more memory problems than others their age, but their symptoms are not as severe as the symptoms seen in people with Alzheimer’s disease. However, patients with MCI have a greater potential of developing Alzheimer’s. The earliest possible diagnosis can lead to pharmacological treatment and non-pharmacological interventions to slow the progression of the disease. Twenty-five distinguished neurological experts from areas around the world – including Sweden, Australia and Netherlands, as well as U.S. cities such as Miami, Chicago, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Phoenix, Boston, Philadelphia, Berkeley, Atlanta and more – presented the latest information on the earliest stages of cognitive decline. In addition, the symposium featured keynote speeches by two distinguished experts. Todd Golde, M.D., PhD, director of the University of Florida’s Center for Translational Research in Neurodegenerative Disease, delivered a presentation titled, “Solving the Dilemma of Treatment Versus Prevention Strategies for Alzheimer’s Disease.” Eric Reiman, M.D.,
executive director of the Banner Alzheimer’s Institute, addressed “Launching the Era of Alzheimer’s Prevention Research”. This year’s event also featured the 2nd Annual Early Alzheimer’s Diagnostic and Treatment Workshop, which explored how newly developed diagnostic tests can be used successfully in the early diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer’s. The symposium also included the 1st Annual MCI Public Education Forum, which gave members of the community the opportunity to interact in a panel discussion with medical experts. The MCI Symposium began in 2003 under the direction of Ranjan Duara, M.D., medical director of the Wien Center. Thanks to the generosity of Marilyn “Lynn” Girsh, the Wien Center will receive financial support to continue the symposium for the next 20 years. “I was very impressed with the work that Dr. Duara is doing at the Wien Center,” said Girsh. “And I especially appreciated the idea of an international symposium bringing researchers together to share their findings and discuss new ideas on treating Alzheimer’s. If there is any possibility of finding a cure, I would like to do what I can to help.” Unless new treatment options are found to prevent Alzheimer’s or delay its onset, it is projected that 13 million people in the U.S. will have the disease by 2050. Since the development of criteria for Alzheimer’s 25 years ago, major advances in understanding of the biology and early clinical features of the disease have led to improvement in clinical assessments. “Our goal is to continue hosting the symposium to help researchers gain a greater understanding of Alzheimer’s and eventually discover new treatment options that will delay, prevent or cure the disease,” Dr. Duara said.
