So what do sports, golf, fishing, education and community all have in common? The answer is quite simple! Your incredible Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce. Each year the Chamber has a golf tournament to help support education in our community through our very own Education Foundation. This year, we expanded the golf tournament into an entire sports weekend, consisting of dinner, sponsored by Jerry’s Famous Deli, for 250 local elementary and middle school athletes with sports celebrity guest speakers Jay Harris, Ronnie Chalmers, Kelly Schumacher, Gretchen Duffner-Hand and David Sugarman; a golf tournament at the Miami Beach Golf Club, sponsored by Boucher Brothers Management; and a fishing tournament at the Miami Beach Marina, sponsored by Mango’s Tropical Café. The Sports Weekend finale celebration took place at Mango’s, where all Sports Weekend participants were invited to celebrate a successful weekend! The result of all of this fun in the sun was a contribution from the Chamber’s Education Foundation of $10,000 to the City of Miami Beach to help support the IB program at Beach High. The addition of young athletes at the Supper of Champions was our way of bringing our youth to the event. These kids were not only inspired, but also engaged with the sports panel. At the end of the day, it is all about bringing the community together and making this a better place to work, live and play. If these

The Portman/CMC Group, is led by Portman Holdings, Miami architect Ugo Colombo, Cirque du Soleil and Bal Harbour Shops. The Tishman Group/South Beach ACE, is led by Tishman Hotel and Realty, developer Robert Wennett, and Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas. Both teams have assembled an impressive supporting cast of professionals that include Architects, Urban planners, Landscape Architects, Financiers, Traffic Analysts, as well as other consultants to work on the project. In January, both teams were introduced at a public workshop held for the purpose of garnering public input to address concerns and what the public would like to see in the project. The meeting was well attended with over 400 persons showing up to speak and listen. The resounding message from concerned citizens to the developers was to develop a first class facility, not the biggest but the finest, to create a Convention Center Campus that will be in scale with the surrounding community, to provide open green areas for public use, and resolve the problems of parking and traffic in order to minimize the project’s impact to our City. Following this initial meeting, the two teams went about setting meetings with the local HOA’s to seek further input from the neighborhoods immediately surrounding the Convention Center Campus. A public workshop was held on Feb. 27, 2013, followed by a Commission Workshop on Feb. 28, 2013, where the two teams presented their individual master plans providing a first view of what each had designed as their vision for the development of the MBCC. Having attended these meetings, I sat and carefully listened as to how each team had incorporated public input into their respective plan. Both teams showed impressive yet diverse designs. To better understand the difference, it is best to look at a comparison of how each team dealt with the overall development plan, looking at each aspect of the Miami Beach Convention Center plan. Overall Vision: Portman envisions a public square with connectivity to the Botanical Garden, Holocaust Memorial and Sound Scape park. Tishman envisions a Civic plaza with public spaces and a green roof on the convention center with a running track open to public use.
March 7 - 20, 2013
Retail/Entertainment Tishman creates shops around the convention center public square totaling 200,000 square feet and links to Lincoln Road with additional 60,000 – 80,000 square feet of linear retail in 17th Street garage. They would rebuild or renovate the parking over the retail space. Portman would keep with linear retail design only on ground floor of the 17th Street Garage of 60,000 – 80,000 square feet of retail space.
ABOVE: Tishman Site Plan BELOW: Portman Site Plan
Residential Portman would create 350-500 units on the P Lot and on the Washington Avenue side, with the possibility of more on the north side of the MBCC, if ballroom is built on the P Lot. Tishman would build 350-400 units on the P Lot and possibly more on the MBCC north side as well. Parking Tishman provides parking on the North side of MBCC, if the ballroom is built on the P Lot. Portman provides for parking on the North side of MBCC; as well as on the P lot covered by a grass berm to hide the parking. Program Space Portman identifies a total of 1.5 million square feet of program space. Tishman identifies slightly under 1 million square feet of program space.
Convention Center Details Portman proposes the Ballroom placement options on either the P Lot or north side of the building. Proposes 60,000 square feet of ballroom and 100,000 square feet of meeting space. They reorient the exhibit halls to an east/west orientation with the loading docs on the west side of the Convention Center. Do not reorient exhibit halls; stay in existing configuration. Tishman also proposed a 60,000 square foot ballroom and 100,000 square feet of meeting space with the meting rooms being placed in the north west portion of the convention center and the meeting space shared with the proposed hotel.
Hotel Tishman shows an 800-1,000 rooms hotel having 12-17 stories and built on the Jackie Gleason Theatre site with dedicated meeting and ballroom space. 100% privately financed. Portman shows an 800 room hotel having17-20 stories and built on top of the south west corner of MBCC. Hotel meeting and ballroom space would share MBCC space. Finances hotel tower. Gleason Theater Tishman replaces the theatre with a multi-use venue, featuring Cirque and other performances. Portman redevelops and uses the exist-
As one examines the similarities and differences, it is clear that more refinement of the project needs to take place. We have asked the Strategic Group to work with both teams to establish specific cost analysis of the proposed project to ensure maximum return on investment to our city and properly identify the funding sources in detail for the entire project to ensure full transparency of funding. However, equally important will be how each team deals with the overall traffic issue. While traffic studies had not been completed at the time of the workshops, we have asked both teams to take a global view of the collector roads and arterial streets leading to the convention center and provide analyses of traffic flows and potential for integration with an enhanced public transit system. The added amenities to the convention center campus of additional retail, open space and hotel will have a significant impact on the traffic. The successful team will need to resolve these issues as part of their project to be selected.

Arts and Culture Council (PRE)view and (RE)view Describing Labor at the Wolfsonian Museum
BY JUDY HOLM
Describing Labor is a thought-provoking, emotionally-charged art exhibition commissioned by The Wo l f s o n i a n - F l o r i d a International University in Miami Beach Florida, created by artist Esther Shalev-Gerz. Occupying the entire seventh floor of the museum, the project actually begins in the elevator; with the background voice of museum founder Mitchell Wolfson contributing to the experience of “describing labor.” The exhibition is brilliantly constructed, creating direct and relevant contemporary content that links to the heritage of the museum as well as to the historical place of manual labor around the globe- from the period of 1885 to 1945. Shalev-Gerz theorizes that this period of time, roughly beginning with the industrial revolution and ending after the Second World War, was the last time that laborers were conveyed and depicted as prominent subjects of art, and with the emotion of “heroism.” At the core of the exhibition are art objects relating to the figure of laborers during that stretch of time. Approximately forty pieces of art –ranging from paintings and prints to sculptures and photographs (mostly belonging to the private collection of the Wolfsonian), were carefully selected by Shalev-Gerz as the integral layer for the exhibition. She then recruited twenty-four people from the art industry as participants. These artists, curators and professors were each asked to choose one of the pieces, based on their personal connection and artistic bias. Subsequently, the participants were asked to locate a place to photograph their selection within the massive archives of the museum, which stores over 100,000 objects. The final photograph of each art work renders each

piece indelibly connected to its surrounding framework, and to its unique curatorcreating a link of the historical art work and depiction of labor with the present. These twenty-four photographs, shot with depth and detail, in predominantly dark setting, create the next layer of the exhibition. The individual works are also presented as an ensemble, on one wall within the museum. The contrast between the framed images in a freeform collage displayed a stark white wall and each image ensconced in a powerful photographic dark frame is one of the brilliant aspects of the exhibition. As alluded to in the title of the exhibition, the project contains layers and subtle messages formatting the depiction of the theme. Each of the twenty four participants is individually interviewed and discusses the theme of labor as well as the reason for the selec-
tion of their piece. The interviews are shot at close range with a black background, and run in a video loop side-by-side with another image scanning in detail their individually selected work of art. The juxtaposition of the voice and expression of the individual
participant with the intentionally discordant view of the art work perhaps reiterates the idea that “describing labor” is not merely a simple answer derived from the presence of its objects. Each resulting tableau depicts an entire story about the participants’ interpretation of the theme – choosing different aspects and emotions connected to labor. Social injustice and disparity, subjugation, heroism, monotony, stoicism, solemnity, power and strength are just some of the emotions evoked in the exhibition. The observer may reflect on how and why the concept and practice of labor have shifted so dramatically over time. As Shalev-Gerz points out, we are now visually flooded with the faces of politicians, celebrities and athletes, but the visualization of those who create objects has all but disappeared from art and from prominent media. Museum Director, Cathy Leff muses, “Describing Labor insists that the luster of things does not lie hidden beneath the patina of time; rather, the patina itself holds latent meanings awaiting activation.” The relationship between words and images is integral to the exhibition. In discussing the work with assistant curator Matthew Abbess, he draws attention to the concept of art “speaking to us.” How and why different people see art in a certain light, and respond viscerally from their own experiences and historical perspective is often what connects us to history, or a physical object or image. Describing Labor shares with the viewers a panoply of ideas, strong visual images, and with intellectual stimulation and exploration of the theme of labor, it challenges the audience to consider the changing role and voice of labor over time, and how people today relate to the past. The exhibition which debuted during the week of Art Basel Miami Beach on December 3, 2012 will remain open to the public through April 19, 2013.

2013 Dodge Challenger Rallye Redline is a ‘muscle car’ with attitude Grant Miller CAR CORNER The 2013 Dodge Challenger is a lot of fun to drive and it really turns heads as you pass other cars on the expressway. This is a muscle car that will draw you in with its refined handling and ride, and its spacious interior makes it comfortable to drive. Our test car for the week was the new Challenger Rallye Redline model, which is based on the Challenger SXT Plus. It is distinguished by twin hood scoops and a signature triple stripe down the center of the hood, roof and deck lid. A body-color decklid spoiler adds to the performance look. Filling the wheelwells are 20-inch black chrome wheels with a Redline Red lip and inner backbone for a one-of-a-kind look. Performance P245/45R20 tires provide greater contact with the road and a lower sidewall profile for improved steering precision and handling. Challenger Rallye Redline’s seating for five is wrapped in premium Nappa leather in Dark Slate Gray or Radar Red, and
includes heated front performance seats. The Rallye Redline is available in four exterior colors — Bullet Silver Metallic, Granite Crystal Pearl, Bright White and Pitch Black. The Redline has a track-tuned performance suspension to deliver excellent handling. A more responsive 3.06:1 rear-axle ratio and die-cast zinc steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters add to the performance package. The Rallye Redline features the Super Sport Group as standard equipment and includes a performance-tuned suspension with firmer front and rear monotube shocks, and a larger front and a rear sway bar to add to the cornering capabilities. A performancetuned steering calibration delivers 25 percent quicker steering and 20 percent heavier on-center feel, while larger performance disc brakes replace the standard set. Rallye Redline also includes a huge amount of standard equipment, including: Uconnect handsfree phone, six Boston Acoustic Speakers with 276-watt amplifier, premium Nappa leather faced seats, heated front seats, SiriusXM Radio with 12-month subscription, fog lamps, dual exhausts, automatic temperature control, power sixway driver’s seat, cruise control, electronic stability control (ESC), Keyless Enter-N-

Go, and six standard airbags. All Challenger SXT, SXT Plus and Rallye Redline models come standard with the Dodge 305 hp 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine with a cold-air induction system and dual exhausts from the headers back to the exhaust tips. Challenger R/T, R/T Plus and R/T Classic models come with the legendary 375 hp 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 mated to with the Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual
transmission. The result is 0-60 mph in the mid five-second range. Pricing on the 2013 Dodge Challenger ranges from $25,795 to $43,775. Grant Miller is the publisher of Community Newspapers. He may be contacted by calling 305-662-2277 or by addressing email to <Grant@CommunityNewspapers.com>.

One-Stop Shop Recycling Drop-Off Station For Electronic Waste, Batteries, Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs and all other recyclables.
WHAT: ECOMB HAS JUST MADE IT A LOT EASIER FOR EVERYONE TO RECYCLE! The Environmental Coalition of Miami & the Beaches, ECOMB, in partnership with the City of Miami Beach, eTronic eWaste (www.etronicewaste.com), EcoBatt (www.ecobatt.net) and Smart At Bulbs (www.smartatbulbs.com) is pleased to announce the opening of Miami-Dade County’s first One-Stop Shop Recycling Drop-Off Station for all types of electronic waste, batteries and compact fluorescent light bulbs at its new Miami Beach Center for the Environment. The Center also accepts all other types of Single Stream Recyclables - glass, plastic, metal, paper, cardboard, magazines, junk mail, phone books, etc - for those businesses and residents that do not have a recycling program, thanks to an agreement established between the City of Miami Beach and our local waste haulers: Choice Recycling, General Hauling, Waste Management and WSI. With ECOMB in the “hood”, it’s now easy to be part of the green movement. All you have to do is call ECOMB’s office or stop by to visit us. WHY: Because the average American throws out seven and a half pounds of trash each day! And it all ends up in landfills, where it just sits, compacted, buried, taking up
space ... forever. Recycling is important because it helps keep our resources plentiful, not only for us but for our future generations: our children, grandchildren, and so on ... The $outh Florida Gaming Report Legislature stirring the gaming pot BY ISADORE HAVENICK
Once again the Florida legislature has set its eyes on the convoluted Florida gaming industry. A request for proposal (RFP) has been issued as the legislative branch undertakes a comprehensive study of gambling in the sunshine state. This will be interesting for several reasons. Firstly, the State has to find an unbiased reputable firm to put together this study over the next several months. This is a tall task, as virtually every “reputable” company has done, or is doing, work for casino industry members. There are inherent conflicts of interests brewing as the outcome of this study is designed to determine the fate of current and future participants in the Florida gaming industry.
This includes the deep-pocketed giants like the Seminole Tribe of Florida, Malaysian powerhouse Genting, and Sheldon Adelson’s Las Vegas Sands. There are billions of future profits at risk. Good luck with this search. Once a firm is selected, they will examine every aspect of the current market. This includes tribal gaming, racinos in Dade and Broward County, pari-mutuels around the state, and the silent, ever growing arcades and internet cafes. This will be a study that defines the future of Florida in the gaming industry. Too many residents and legislators are in denial over our gaming presence. The industry has been replete with piecemeal legislation. It is time to chart a logical path that maximizes job creation and revenues to the state, while holding the participants accountable through sensible regulations.
