sla Mujeres, the Island of Women is one of the nine municipalities of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo and has much in common with Miami Beach of old. Located just eight miles across the Bahia de Mujeres (Bay of Women) from Cancun, it is comparable to the relationship that Miami Beach has with the ‘mainland’ which is a short four miles from South
Beach to Downtown Miami. Isla Mujeres is only 5 miles long and half a mile wide at its widest point. The town has a population of only 11,147. Historically, Isla Mujeres is a fishing village; compare that to Miami Beach which has an agricultural origin some 90 years ago. Miami Beach has since grown into a successful tourist destination and an international gateway to commerce. If –––––––––––– See

Letter from the Chair Recently, I lost a good friend of mine. Sean Peart was just 44 years old and leaves behind a loving wife and wonderful family. As I reflect on the good times and many laughs we shared since our high school days, I realize that he has also taught me so much. He had the courage to fight and to live the life. While his future prognosis was scary, he focused on what he could better accomplish today, nurturing his relationships and taking nothing for granted. His attitude made him an inspiration to his friends, family and even those who didn’t know him well. Imagine if we translated this philosophy to our business. Business is scary, with time, money and a lot of harsh externalities involved. Growing our companies seems like a daunting task, but it is the courage to take risks that rewards with big payoffs. Otherwise, we’ll continue on paralyzed - and we may do OK, but never to the level of greatness we really desire. We can muster this needed courage by developing a plan. While it’s important to look towards the future, focus on how today can get you there. Perfect each component of your business before moving onto the next. Unfortunately, there will be bad days, but instead of getting discouraged, remember that each day gives you a whole 24 hours to turn it around. Like my friend, don’t take anything for granted. Celebrate even the small victories to maintain a positive mindset as you continue to simultaneously chip away at capturing the big break. Most importantly, value your staff, supporters, partners, even new contacts and their contributions to your success. Solid businesses aren’t built on transactions, but relationships. Sean was taken much too soon. Yet in his short life, he managed to create an everlasting legacy. In loving memory of him, I urge you to live as he did: love, laugh, fight and simply enjoy the moments.

to empower the less fortunate through his cofounding of Shake-A-Leg Miami, an adaptive water sports center combining education and recreation to annually serve more than 12,000 children and adults with physical, developmental, and economic challenges. According to his biography on the Shake-A-Leg Miami website, Dr. Green’s interest in and commitment to neuroscience and spinal cord rehabilitation originated during medical school, where he was exposed to “the extraordinary courage and integrity of paraplegics who volunteered in the spinal cord injury research laboratory.” On the international front, Dr. Green co-founded Project Medishare for Haiti to help improve the health status of Haiti’s citizens through an integrated, bottom-up, community approach to development. Dr. Green is also cofounder of the University of Miami’s Global Institute for Community Health and Development, a university-wide program focused on improving healthcare and advancing community development
in the Western Hemisphere. Within 24 hours of the earthquake in Haiti, Dr. Green had arrived in Port-auPrince with medical supplies and a small group of physicians who treated hundreds of critically injured Haitians daily. While Dr. Green was in Haiti, his colleagues at the UM Global Institute/Project Medishare and Jackson Memorial Hospital established a massive relief effort and airlifted over 5,000 medical volunteers from around the world along with tons of medical supplies and equipment. The UM Global Institute/Project Medishare field hospital was the only referral center for severe critical care and trauma cases in Haiti. Dr. Green is committed to implementing sustainable capacity building programs in Haiti, which will save millions of lives in the future. Dr. Green has made tangible and inspirational contributions both within South Florida and internationally. The Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce is honored to present the Distinguished Service Award to Dr. Green.

Miami Beach Chamber welcomes Delegation from Isla Mujeres
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– the Mayor-elect Hugo Sánchez Motalvo of the District of Isla Mujeres is successful in his plans, the portion just north of Cancun will be developed as Ciudad Mujeres, a new city establishment which falls under his jurisdiction. The long strip of the island just north, called Isla Blanca, a key which resembles Key West, is also included as part of the Master Plan development. These plans for transformation brought the Mayor-elect Hugo Sánchez Motalvo to confer with Jason Loeb, the Chairman of the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce, Jerry Libbin the President and CEO of the Chamber who is also a City Commissioner, representatives from Kobi Karp, a Chamber Board member and world renowned architect, Ana Cecilia Velasco, the Chamber’s Chief Operating Officer and Tourism and Hospitality Chairman, Jason Beukema on
business initiatives, infrastructure, tourism and the possibility of exchange missions for businesses on Miami Beach and Isla Mujeres. The leadership suggested that Eco-tourism also be included in the planning as there are portions of the area that have been preserved. The Mayor-elect was accompanied by his political advisor, the Police Chief as well as several business development associates. The success of the mission to Beijing and Shanghai in 2006-2007 by the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce resulted in the launch of a global business access network. The goal is to enhance our international relations through business, education and cultural exchange. The recent meeting with the Mayor-elect of Isla Mujeres is an additional component the Chamber’s global presence.

COMMISSIONER’S CORNER When you Take Water, Give Water UNICEF TAP Project BY COMMISSIONER ED TOBIN
In 2007, the UNICEF Tap Project was born in New York City based on a simple concept: restaurants would ask their patrons to donate $1 or more for the tap water they usually enjoy for f ree and all funds raised would support UNICEF’s efforts to bring clean and accessible water to millions of children around the world. Since its inception in 2007, the UNICEF Tap Project has raised almost $2.5 million in the U.S. and has helped provide clean water for millions of children globally. Now in its fifth year, the award-winning UNICEF Tap Project, a nationwide campaign sponsored by the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, will return during World Water Week, March 20–26. The first program of its kind, the UNICEF Tap Project has become a dynamic movement that affords everyone the opportunity to help provide the world’s children with safe, clean water. Through numerous fundraising and volunteer activities, the UNICEF Tap Project celebrates the clean water we enjoy on a daily basis by encouraging celebrity, restaurant, volunteer, corporate, and government supporters to give this vital resource to children in developing countries. The concept is basic and compelling: “When You Take Water, Give Water.”
Currently, UNICEF works in more than 100 countries around the world to improve access to safe water and sanitation facilities in schools and communities, and to promote safe hygiene practices. In alignment with the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, UNICEF is working with its partners to reduce the number of people without access to safe water and basic sanitation by 50% by 2015, which will also save children at risk from waterborne illnesses - the second highest cause of preventable childhood deaths. It is estimated that 4,200 children die of water- related diseases everyday. UNICEF is proud to commit 90.5% of all collected funds solely towards program support. We are privileged to not have to concern ourselves with the ramifications of not having access to clean water - often taking it for granted. On March 20-26 we have an opportunity, as a City and individuals, to help those around the world that are in need of clean water. One single dollar raised can p rovide a child safe drinking water for 40 days. I urge you to please support the participating restaurants and venues in Miami Beach and South Florida and offer your support the Tap Project. Please visit UNICEF’s website at www.unicefusa.org for additional information on the Tap Project and their many efforts to reduce child mortality worldwide. You can also contact our office at 305-673-7107 for volunteer or registration opportunities.

New Home Design Store features exotic, luxury items BY DAISY OLIVERA Daisy@thedaisycolumn.com www.thedaisycolumn.com
It’s no surprise that Monica Kalpakian’s new store, ETC Miami, has the most gorgeous, unique home accessories and hand-crafted jewelry you could imagine. The Argentinean-born Kalpakian is one of the chicest women in Miami society and is well-known as an art collector. It’s no wonder her exquisite taste (she was wearing Lanvin beautifully that night) is on display on every shelf in the cozy boutique which is ensconced a few steps off Lincoln Road on Jefferson Avenue. The selection, which she searched for around the world, features pieces from Airedelsur by Marcelo Lucini, such as tables, trays, picture frames, pitchers, bowls, candlesticks, and cutlery crafted from exotic, fossilized woods, parchment, natural horn, silver, and semi-precious stones, plus fur throws and candles. She
also introduced jewelry crafted (for men and women) by up-and-coming European and Argentinean artisans, as well as vintage watches and jewelry from the 1920s, 1950s, and 1960s and silver bracelets, which Kalpakian designed herself. The opening party, where champagne flowed all night, drew a choice crowd of VIPs which included former U.S. ambassador to Brussels, Paul Cejas and wife Trudy; Barbara Becker; artists Antoniaa Wright and Ruben Millares; Iran Issa Khan; Susie and Walid Wahab; Dora Puig; Maria & Manuel Millares; Lolo Sudarsky; Susanne Birbragher and Sam Robin. ETC Miami is sure to become the go-to place for any impressive birthday or hostess gift! Kalpakian’s attention to intricate details includes a silk fabric gift-wrap so you never have to attend a party emptyhanded. ETC Miami is located at 1628 Jefferson Avenue, Miami Beach. March Madness Miami Beach Style BY MICKY ROSS STEINBERG
Miami Beach Visitor and Convention Authority Board Member While only certain teams are fortunate enough to participate in the basketball tournament also known as March Madness, all Miami Beach residents are able to take part in the following list of activities that take place in March. Don’t foul out by neglecting to go to any of these worthwhile endeavors; you’re guaranteed to score at any one of these fan favorites: 2011 MIAMI INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL (MARCH 4-13): Just as teams from around the country compete in March Madness, filmmakers from around the world will descend on Miami Beach to showcase some of the best films that you haven’t yet seen. This event, now in its 26th year, will feature more than 100 events like seminars, panels, work-

This halfmarathon starts at Ocean Drive and 10th Street and finishes on the hard-packed sand. If you can’t run 13 miles, you can still be part of the action; there will also be a 5K race and “Kids’ Run.” SOUTH BEACH COMEDY FESTIVAL (MARCH 2-5): The games played on the hard court are intense and are certainly no laughing matter. But there are plenty of laughs to be had at the South Beach Comedy Festival, now in its sixth year. Come see some of the best comedians from around the country as they travel to Miami Beach to entertain you. WINTER PARTY FESTIVAL (MARCH 9-14): When the games have ended and the victor has been crowned, it’s time for fans to celebrate. Have you ever interviewed Dr. Jekyll and hired Mr. Hyde? BY BETTY ROFFWARG
It’s called Human “Resources” for a reason: your employees are the backbone of your company, and each one needs to be the right fit to avoid the “pain” of a mishire or work teams that are not cohesive. This is particularly important in smaller companies, where the cost per employee – as well as the expectations and responsibilities for each employee – is often much greater. According to Betty Roffwarg, President of HR Matters, “It is very difficult to determine a person’s drives and motivations from an interview alone.” In her over 20 years of providing human resource consulting to smaller businesses, Betty knows the value of utilizing the right tools in finding the proverbial “needle in the haystack”: an employee who is the right fit. HR Matters specializes in selection, development and retention of a company’s most important asset – its employees. As savvy business owners know, finding the right people is the first step towards building a successful team. The firm is currently hiring the key staff for Bouygues, the contractor building the new Port of Miami Tunnel, in addition to ongoing and completed searches for a diverse client base and positions. To address the hiring challenge, HR Matters offers its clients a management tool called the P redictive Index® (PI) that measures work-related behaviors and motivating needs of both the position and the candidate to ensure a good match. Many clients use PI for current employees as well to ensure employees are “in the right seats” (Jim Collins, Good to
Great). Coupled with the experience and expertise of HR Matters, the PI gives business owners and management teams the power – and the knowledge – to not only hire effectively, but to motivate, lead and utilize their human resources at an optimum level. Betty will be offering her expertise to our business community with her seminar, “How to Hire So You Don’t Have to Fire”, designed for business owners and hiring managers who want to improve their ability to hire right the first time.

Making your property healthy for Freddie and Fannie! On Tuesday, March 1st, the Real Estate Council of the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce, Chaired by Melissa Rubin of Platinum Properties International, presented a panel of experts who educated the participants on the value of qualifying buildings for FHA loans. The breakfast, held at The Alexander All-Suites Oceanfront Resort, was open to the public. Currently, there are approximately 1400 condos for sale in Miami Beach within FHA loan limits but only a handful of buildings in Miami Beach are FHA approved! Madeleine Romanello of Douglas Elliman Florida and Sherry Roberts of South Beach Boutique Realty, and members of the Council, brought key questions to the panel in order to bring clarity to a somewhat convoluted issue. Marc Halpern of Halpern & Associates, identified the requirements to qualify of an Association in terms of budget reserves, litigations, and control from the developer to the Association. James Marx, Attorney Partner of Blass, Frankel and Marx, P.A. gave an overview of the Condo Distress Act. Mark R. Gerstle, C.P.A. founding partner of Gerstle, Rosen & Goldenberg P.A., provided detailed information for Associations wanting to work toward qualification, including

Not only did the panelists provide expertise in regards to the issue of FHA approvals, they fielded questions that address what Real Estate professionals see as obstacles to obtaining the FHA approvals. This panel discussion is the first of a series of panels which will be presented to industry professionals by the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce’s Real Estate Council. “The Real Estate industry impacts so many Miami Beach Residents. It is the goal of the council to improve our city by being advocates for those issues that impact Miami Beach.” Stated Melissa Rubin.. “The Real Estate Council has done a great job of taking on important issues and initiatives facing the local economy to make Miami a better place to live.” said Chairman of the Board, Jason Loeb. Under Jason Loeb’s leadership the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce has initiated a variety of programs to assist business growth in this economy.

New and Improved Shelborne
Shelborne Hotel Entrance
Guest bedroom at the Shelborne
South Beach is bracing itself for the new Shelborne South Beach – a multi-million dollar renovation that will transform this famous Art Deco landmark as it turns 70 years old. The newly completed guest lobby just opened and the lobby sushi bar Zama is set to open next month offering Beach Bento Boxes to go. The Shelborne’s glamorous history is tightly woven in the fabric of Miami Beach, and this Art Deco gem continues to reinvent itself without departing from its original splendor and old world charm. The hotel remains a part of the family lineage as Keith Menin oversees the renovation process. Keith plans on making the new Shelborne as appealing to locals as it will be to visitors. The best hotels reflect the local culture and embrace the area’s ethos, thus Keith wants to make the Shelborne the perfect place to start a day at the beach or a night on the town. By the end of summer The Shelborne will debut its signature new restaurant, Vesper, that will feature a hidden private dining room and new American Menu. Chef Mario Tolentino, winner of Food Network’s Chopped, will create a fresh and innovative menu inspired by youthful trends. A dramatic new entrance will feature an
Art Deco Porte Cochere that will recreate the rings of light on the overhang that previously greeted guests 70 years ago. Now LED technology will allow the lights to pulsate and change colors. An infinity pool with an expanded beauty deck will engage the Shelborne’s guests. The upper sun deck with a topless sunbathing area is connected by a cat walk for dramatic entrances, and includes a large communal rainbow outdoor shower. The new Shelborne South Beach will be the first ocean front hotel in South Beach to completely open and clear the space between the pool and the beach creating stunning unobstructed views. Hotels in the 1940s popularized this feature, however in the last 10 years the beach front hotels created large hedges and fences behind their pools. The open space will allow the public to easily access the new pool side snack bar. “Lucy”s Cantina Royale” will offer cheap chic food & drinks for hungry locals and visitors.

Want to get fit? Ride a bike BY CHARLOTTE LIBOV
Miami Beach is fast becoming the Mecca of the biking world, which is great news for us here, because riding is great for your health. When it comes to health, here’s a rundown on what biking does for you: • Builds strength and muscle tone — Most people think that cycling just strengthens the legs, but it actually involves the entire body. • Builds stamina • Improves cardiovascular fitness • Burns calories — Steady cycling burns approximately 300 calories per hour, so 30 minutes of cycling can burn 11 pounds of fat in a year. • Increased balance and flexibility • Releases stress Given our great weather and fantastic scenery, biking has always been popular here, but it’s going to grow even more so, thanks to the advent of Deco Bike, the city’s nifty new “bike-and-go” set-up. But we’ve also got great bike shops, and fitness clubs for indoor cycling too. So here are ways to get your biking fix: Deco Bike: No doubt you’ve been seeing bright colored kiosks springing up everywhere. They are for “Deco Bike,” the program enables you to get a monthly pass online to use one of the basic, silver bikes that will be parked at the there. Then, you ride it to your destination, like a bar, café, or even to work, and just drop it off at the nearest kiosk when you reach you destination. This program, modeled
on successful projects in Europe, is designed to please both tourists and locals. Local Bike Shops: Fritz’s Skate, Bike & Surf can sell or rent you the bike of your dreams, and also help you accessorize it as well. This great local place has mountain, road, single-speed, comfort bikes, and even unicycles, which are a great way to get noticed on the beach! Fitness Club cycling: Need to perk up your fitness, but it’s raining or just too hot to ride outdoors. You can get the same health benefits indoors, and, in a way, even more, because a cycling route can provide you with the hills that our flat terrain doesn’t provide. Also, some clubs have special cycling events; at Equinox South Beach, for instance, Andreas Heuser leads outdoor bike rides. Charlotte Libov’s writing on Miami Beach appears in many places, including AOL City’s Best Miami and Florida Travel + Life and AOL City’s Best Miami. She is also the author of five books, including “The Woman’s Heart Book,” which was made into the groundbreaking PBS documentary “Women’s Hearts at Risk.” She speaks both nationally and locally on the topic of preventing heart disease in women. In doing business — Events Matters Collins Canal Clean Up BY VALERIE RASKEN
Events help businesses seeking to personalize their local presence, brand their identity, and engage in positive community outreach. When done effectively, businesses that participate in events are positioned apart from their competitors, leaving a lasting impression in their markets. The Emerging Leadership Council of the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce, whose mission is to work to promote, encourage and generate relationships through strategic introductions in addition to their leadership roles, coordinated a panel of industry leaders last month to discuss how to grow business through hosting your own events, the value of partnering with charities, seeking corporate sponsors and how to save money by participating in existing events that speak to your target audience. The Events Matters panel was composed of Jacquie O’Malley, Group VP of Development, United Way; Sabrina Badeaux, Owner, Chez Badeaux Salon; Caterina Falcone, Marketing Director, Miami New Times; and Felipe Basulto, TD Bank all industry leaders who shared their personal successes in utilizing events to advance their businesses. Each provided a unique perspective on Events as a way to build traffic, promote a cause, or find marketing exposure.
Help ECOMB volunteers, the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce, Collins Park Neighborhood Association and the City of Miami Beach cleanup the shorelines of Collins Canal, Miami Beach. Gemma on Lincoln Road ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
This seminar was held at Gemma Lounge on Lincoln Road and attended by well over 70 people. Each panelist was able to answer questions about their individual businesses and the important of events and marketing from their own perspective. Whether a big non-profit, small business owner, media outlet, or a corporate entity, it is important for each business to not only sponsor events, but host and partner with other businesses in the community and the attendees were able to get an insider’s perspective on the why and how to do so effectively. The event was successfully Chaired by Alexis Guillen from the Miami New Times with support from David Wrubel, CPA, and Brenda Vargas, AXA Financial Advisors and Chair of the Emerging Leadership Council. Gemma Lounge, as special event venue, graciously hosted the event which was catered by Centerplate. The Emerging Leadership Council develops and presents a series of “Matters” seminars to assist businesses with educational opportunities by industry leaders which are held throughout the year.

A Great Weekend for FIU students
BY MARTIN MENDIOLA
US Gourmet Mendiola@USGourmet.US Wow, what a great weekend! With Bobby, Rachel, Anne and Giada in town, there was excitement everywhere you went. Fans full of energy and enthusiasm flocked to the streets hoping to catch a glimpse of their favorite celebrity chefs. Everyone had his or her own expectations as to what would happen when meeting their favorite Food Network star. Even my wife, kept telling me how upon meeting Bobby Flay she was going to let him know that she “really learned to cook from watching his shows ever since he first started on TV. I do not think that is the whole truth, for even
FIU STUDENTS assisting CENTERPLATE –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
Executive Chef Jonathan Barnett, Miami Beach Convention Center for Centerplate
thought his recipes are simple and easy to make, she always thought he was somewhat cute. Little does she know that I do not mind since I am the one reaping the benefits of her most improved cooking skills. Thanks Bobby. There were many enjoyable events throughout the weekend and while the tasting tents are not among my favorites (I believe you really need a special appreciation for heat and sand), this event turned out to be a most enjoyable party. There were lots of old friends and many new ones, all having fun and enjoying the many different products available. One of the most interesting new products on display was the Agave Nectars, considered a sweeter and healthier alternative to sugar. With the many pending health issues concerning sugar, I am sure more will be said about this product in the near future. Within the compound, there also was the very special Experience Italy Pavillion. The excellent aged Grana Padano PDO cheeses
found here accompanied by the Regaleali Nero d’Avola from the Sicilian Tasca D’Almerita Agricultural Estate, made leaving this tent extremely difficult. When you add the great food from TiramisU and the wines from Pio Cesare, Antinori and Speri among others, leaving became almost impossible. If not for the pork belly and tamarind sauce, we saw the chefs from Barbados prepare at the Miami Beach Convention Center kitchen for the show, we would have been happy to stay in this one place. As much enthusiasm as the celebrity chefs brought to town, they were not even close to the enthusiasm displayed by Marco, Elie, Roger and Jeannie in the Miami Beach Convention Center kitchen. They were part of the over 250 hospitality students from Florida International University who were chopping onions, dry rubbing meats and marinating shrimps alongside the celebrity chefs. Supervised by Chef Michael Moran, Lead Chef Instructor at Florida International
University the students were busy and motivated. Along with Chef Moran and overlooking the whole operation, was Executive Chef Jonathan Barnett whose dedicated staff manages the kitchen operations at the Miami Beach Convention Center for Centerplate the largest hospitality partner to many sports stadiums and convention centers. Many of the students agreed that before their turn, Chef Barnett should become the next Food Network Superstar, for he is knowledgeable, funny and everyone felt he would make a good TV personality. Another plus is that he quickly recognized that nothing could be done without Marcia Brooks, his Executive Sous Chef. As good as the South Beach Wine and Food Festival is and as much as everyone enjoys, the very best thing it brings to town, is the exposure it offers the FIU students. What a great opportunity for these young people and future Food Network stars!

Camillus Dry Cleaner’s Clothing Drive No matter the square footage of our homes, there’s always one room that never seems to be big enough...the closet. Fashionista or not, we’ve all faced closet battles, dodging falling hangers, scouring for a shoe’s mate and balancing towering sweater stacks before quickly squeezing the doors closed. For those with closets threatening to explode, I have good news: your favorite area dry cleaners are now making garment purging that much easier. Sudsies.com Dry Cleaners and Laundry, Sir Galloway Dry Cleaners and Rey’s Cleaners have partnered with Camillus House to collect wears for distribution to local individuals and families in need. Getting involved is easy. All three cleaners distribute specialty collection bags to patrons to fill with gently used clothing, shoes and accessories. These bags can be returned to any of the five Sir Galloway and 23 Rey’s Cleaners locations across Miami, or can be picked up directly from your home, condominium or office via Sudsies’ complimentary dry cleaning pick-up and delivery service. The cleaners then hand over your donations over to Camillus House, where they are sorted and given to their new owners. One of the few with a pristine closet?... I encourage you to join our cause in ensuring that every Miamian has clothes on his/her back. The initiative is ongoing, so even those who get a late start on Spring cleaning can still participate. Communities are built on people - help-
ing one another creates a positive environment in which everybody can live and thrive. By giving straight from your heart (and closet), you are providing someone a little more confidence as they strive to regain a stable home and life. It’s a simple garment to you, but is a school shirt for a child, an interview suit for a critical job opportunity or a much-needed pair of shoes for bare feet. ABOUT SUDSIES DRY CLEANERS & LAUNDRY Based on Miami Beach, Sudsies is fullservice dry cleaning company dedicated to clean clothes, clean service and a clean environment. An industry pioneer for South Florida home pick-up and delivery services, the Sudsies fleet of bubbly, blue and yellow vans offer prompt service to every nook and corner across the tri-county area, while a team of highly-trained specialists care for garments and customers with a smile. The vast range of services includes ecological dry cleaning and laundry processes, alterations and tailoring, clothing restoration, bridal gown storage or alteration and knowledge of specialty items such as couture garments. At Sudsies, customers look and feel their best, while sister company Rugsies Carpet & Drapery ensures customers live in the best with on-site home or office cleaning for carpets, drapes furniture and other home items. A Day Of Fun For Teenagers with Cerebral Palsy A Day of Fun was held on March 3rd at Bayside Marketplace. The event was co-sponsored by Thriller Miami Speedboat Tours and Hard Rock Cafe for ambulatory teenagers with Cerbral Palsy. The kids had an opportunity to experience a thrilling speedboat ride that many never had ever done. They were accompanied by a guardian. The smiles on the kids faces became contagious. It is so wonderful to give these kids opportunities that they rarely get. Then it was off to Hard Rock Cafe where Gonzalo Del Rio was kind enough to provide lunch for our group. I believe it is so important to give back to our community and provide events to help children of special needs. A challenge goes out to other attractions
to provide “fun days for these special kids. Thanks also goes to George Hall & Charles Keith from Thriller Miami for providing time on Thriller Miami for the children. Lisa White and Jessica Dominguez were so nice to work with at the United Cerbral Palsy Association. Another recognition goes to the Miami Chamber of Commerce for their tremendous support of this project. Ira Strickman Director of Marketing Thriller Miami

Beach High to Rock the Big Apple BY JESSE KIRKPATRICK
Senior at Miami Beach Senior High School “There’s no other group like it in high school.” The Miami Beach Senior High Rock Ensemble has built up quite a legacy in its 39 years, and Director Doug Burris is certainly proud. “It’s good music,” Burris said, “performed by talented kids who really like to do what they’re doing.” The Rock Ensemble plays a varied but consistently rockin’ mix of classic and contemporary tunes at an array of venues. The group can be seen performing at community awareness events, private parties, pep rallies, and public concerts. The band functions on a rotation cycle, with new freshman members replacing graduating seniors each year. Therefore, the Ensemble still keeps a young and fresh vibe decades after its 1972 establishment. Because of the long and rich history behind the band, members take pride in what they do and truly respect the reputation of their group — and its legendary director. Burris started the band in 1972, and has since been its sole director. In April 2010, the Rock Ensemble traveled to Las Vegas and received a gold medal at the Heritage Music Festival. Following last year’s success, the group is planning a trip to New York this April for a second go at the Heritage gold. The group will be competing against bands from across the country. Planning a trip to a city like New York takes money, and these public high school students are struggling to put the funds together. “The trip will cost ‘mucho’ bucks,” said Burris. More specifically, 30 grand. This figure includes airfare, festival registra-
tion, touring costs, and instrument rentals. Though it would have been cool to stay at The Plaza, money constraints have limited options to the budget chains in the Newark Airport environs. In order to raise money for the trip, the Rock Ensemble held its 2nd Annual Dinner Concert on February 25. The event featured both the Rock Ensemble and the Guitar Quartet, and brought in over one thousand dollars. “[The members] were excited about performing,” said Burris. “It was a magical night of music.” As of now, the group has raised 15 thousand dollars, but future gigs will help to alleviate the remaining costs. The Ensemble will be entertaining at a private St. Patrick’s Day Party on March 12th, as well as the annual Bay Harbor Picnic on the 27th from 1 to 5 pm. The group is also looking to perform at various public venues. Come check them out! “I’m excited about this year’s group,” said Burris. “The music feels good.”
