Memorial Day means a weekend of Fun and a Day of Remembrance
I
t is a national day of remembrance set aside to honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. It is the unofficial start of summer. And, as many local residents know, Memorial Day is also an increasingly popular weekend for visitors to our city. This year will be no different. The city will once again host Memorial Day services to commemorate the sacrifices of our courageous military personnel. In addition, a large number of visitors are expected to once again come to Miami Beach for the holiday weekend, taking advantage of summertime weather. To coordinate and manage the anticipated large influx of visitors, the City of Miami Beach diligently prepares a comprehensive and coordinated Major Events Plan (MEP) – similar to those done for other busy holiday weekends and major event periods, such as spring break, the Super Bowl, and Art Basel Miami Beach. Development of this year’s Memorial Day weekend MEP began months ago.

Letter from the Chair BY JASON LOEB
Chairman, Miami Beach Chamber
To me, education is the most vital component in the development of a community, yet it is the first to suffer from funding cuts and criticism. As the debate on education wages on, I want to focus instead on celebrating this important learning process - and the people committed to serving our youth. Surely, we all can remember that one teacher in our lives who inspired us. His/her work could have sparked a career passion, helped overcome challenges and/or instilled a sense of selfworth. Either way, we grew as people from the remarkable experiences these educators provided us. They laid the foundation for us to move from the academic to business environment, molding us to become independent thinkers, creative visionaries and promising leaders. And hopefully, we’re still learning. Education is the key to securing our city’s next generation of great businessmen and businesswomen and it is an honor to recognize outstanding teachers who have dedicated their lives to this very cause. Each year, the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce’s Education as Business Council announces the Elayne Weisburd Excellence in Education Award designated to a Miami Beach Educator of the Year. This year, Mayor Matti Herrera Bower and Elayne Weisburd bestowed the award to two individuals: Dr. Mercy MacDowell, of Ruth K. Broad Bay Harbor K-8 Center, and Paul Rehage, of Miami Beach Senior High School. I would like to extend my –––––––––––––––––––––––– See

WEEKEND,
COMMUNITYENWSPAPERS.COM
from page 1 –––––––––
“The plan ensures that the right resources are allocated to address the community’s quality of life needs and expectations,” explained Tourism and Cultural Development Director Max Sklar. “This involves coordination between many City departments, as well as organizations outside of the city. That begins well in advance of this weekend.” One of the challenges in planning this MEP is the nature of the weekend. Unlike other MEPs where there are organized events, or even an event organizer, the City does not organize or promote any event, and does not authorize any special events on public property. Miami Beach has become a popular Memorial Day weekend destination through Internet blogs and Websites. In order to plan appropriately, City staff relies on information it obtains from Websites, hotel occupancy estimates and other sources to prepare a strategy to address traffic, pedestrian flow, sanitation and public safety, among other things. “There is nothing more important to us than ensuring the health and safety of our residents and visitors,” said City Manager Jorge M. Gonzalez. “Our geographical limitations mean that we have to be even more prepared to manage a busy weekend like this one.” The MEP calls for enhanced staffing beginning the Thursday before Memorial Day, peaking on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and then scaling back on Monday. More frequent beach and street clean-up. Code officers will ensure compliance with quality of life laws, such as litter, noise and illegal vending. Parking staff will make sure that residential parking remains available and that other illegal parking does not occur. And, police personnel will keep traffic moving and everyone safe. “There is a managed coordination of resources and information throughout the weekend,” continued Sklar. “We are flexible and staffing can be enhanced or scaled back, as needed.” The City’s “management of traffic” (MOT) plan for this weekend is also an important part of the MEP. To facilitate the heavy volume of pedestrians on the popular Ocean Drive, the street will be closed to vehicular traffic from Fifth to 12 streets and 14 to 15 streets beginning at 7:00 a.m. on Friday, May 27, through 7:00 a.m. on Monday, May 30. Access to east/west streets between Ocean Drive and Washington Avenue may also be restricted as some valet ramps will be relocated to these areas, although local residents with the proper zoned parking decals will be allowed to park. No parking will be allowed on either side of Collins
Avenue from Seventh Street to Espanola Way, as the sidewalks are extended to the parking lanes. “These efforts improve the safety of our visitors and residents,” said Police Chief Carlos Noriega. “After every MEP we meet and discuss what adjustments we should consider that will enhance the resident and visitor experience during the weekend.” A park and ride system using the South Beach Local will be set up at the Miami Beach Convention Center lot at a flat rate of $15. And, as has been customary in previous years, there will be no charge to ride the South Beach Local from 6:00 p.m. Friday, May 27 through Monday, May 30. A key component of the MEP also includes increased communications with the business, residential and tourism communities to share the City’s plan. In addition to community meetings, brochures have been produced and will be provided to visitors with important information and tips. Temporary signage and electronic message boards will provide information on traffic issues and tips on what to do, as well as what not to do, while in the city. The City’s radio station, MBRadio 1670AM will broadcast helpful traffic information for residents and visitors, and the City’s main information number will have a special menu with information ( 305.604.CITY). A key component of the MEP is no doubt the deployment of over 200 Goodwill Ambassadors throughout the weekend. These trained civilian volunteers, all wearing easily identifiable T-shirts, will be on the streets passing out brochures that include a map with useful and important information and tips. “Our Goodwill Ambassadors play an important role in not only providing information to visitors, but in identifying any emerging issues,” explained Noriega. “They are additional eyes and ears that help us make sure everything is ok.” That information, as well as daily reports from the various departments involved in the MEP, is reviewed by the City administration’s executive staff who work the weekend monitoring the execution of the plan. “We have implemented an MEP multiple times, and our process has become a model for other cities when managing these types of high-impact periods,” added Gonzalez. “We are prepared once again this Memorial Day to do whatever we can to reduce – to the extent possible – the impacts of this large number of visitors expected to come to our city. At the end of the day, our desire is for everyone to enjoy all the great things our city has to offer.” FOR INFORMATION ON THE CITY’S MEMORIAL DAY REMEMBRANCE EVENTS, PLEASE VISIT WWW.MIAMIBEACHFL.GOV

CHAMBER STAFF PROFILE: CHANTAL CALLEN GLOOR As Operations Coordinator for the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce, Chantal Gloor works directly with the Chief Operating Officer, Ceci Velasco, and Chief Executive Officer, Jerry Libbin, in preparations for the Executive Board of Governors, Board of Governors and Pillar Board meetings; assisting in the special events, such as the monthly Pillar Reception, Golf Classic Tournament, and the Annual Gala. Chantal also oversees all the interns that come to the Chamber, which consists of students from international schools in Europe such as the Lycee Prive Les Arcades in France and the Kehl University in German to local Universities such as University of Miami, Barry University and Florida International University as well as our Beach High students. She is also the liaison for the Miami Beach News, which includes writing, taking pictures and proofing the bi-weekly newspaper. Chantal Gloor was born and brought up in a beautiful town north of Paris called Lamorlaye, in the L’Oise area of France. She continued her studies at Florida State University (FSU) and from there enrolled in 3 study abroad programs, which furthered her interest in international studies and culture. Her passion for travel brought her to study and live in Valencia Spain, Paris, France, and Panama City, Panama during her college career. After this seminar, she stayed for 2 months and worked with Miami Beach’s Sister City, Fujisawa. In Fujisawa, Chantal was the only Miami Beach resident at the Sister City festival in November of 2009. She resided with a host family so that she could ameliorate her proficiency in the Japanese language. Shortly after returning to the U.S., Chantal started to work for the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce. In October of 2010, a delegation to Shanghai was led by Jerry Libbin, and she quickly rose to the occasion to visit China for a cultural exchange mission and visit to the World Expo. COMMISSIONER’S CORNER National Moment of Remembrance, Memorial Day BY COMMISSIONER DEEDE WEITHORN
On this Memorial Day, May 30th, I invite the residents and visitors of Miami Beach to participate in the National Moment of Remembrance with a minute of silent reflection at 3:00pm. Over the past several years, Miami Beach has forgotten the real meaning of Memorial Day, and so recently the Miami Beach City Commission passed a resolution joining the federal government in honoring the brave Americans who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom. The National Moment of Remembrance was instituted by Congress in 2000 to educate and encourage all Americans to remember the individuals who made the ultimate sacrifice for the United States and the freedoms we cherish. As violent political unrest in so many parts of the world dominates the
daily news, it is important for all Americans to take this opportunity to remember not only the heroes we have lost and those that are fighting today, but their families, who paid the price of loss and the pain of losing a father, a sister, a son. Miami Beach has a long history with the United States Military. During World War II soldiers trained on our beaches and lived in our hotels, the same beach and hotels that currently host tens of thousands of tourists and locals on Memorial Day. As you perhaps enjoy the holiday on one of our beautiful beaches, please take one minute of your time to join the nation in silence at 3:00pm and remember those who have served our nation and to appreciate the freedoms we all sometimes take for granted. Please contact my office for more information about the National Moment of Remembrance and to learn how you can participate this Memorial Day. 305-673-7105 or deede@miamibeachfl.gov.

2012 Bentley Continental GT is ‘deliciously decadent’ Ron Beasley LET’S TALK CARS The new 2012 Bentley Continental GT is a deliciously decadent automobile. It is sensual in design, yet powerful and fast enough to handle any challenge on the highway. It is an amazing combination of style, speed and comfort. The original Continental GT coupe was introduced back in 2003 and re-established Bentley as a player in the ultra-luxury twodoor sport sedan market. The new version is an upgrade on the original, with numerous little improvements and subtle changes that all contribute to making a better automobile, but without seriously dating the older original. The changes are subtle and include a more upright grille and LED running lights trimming the main projector beams. Interestingly, Bentley says the primary body panels on the new Continental GT have been fabricated with a new technique that involves heating single sheets of alu-
minum to 950 degrees, then shaping them under high pressure to remove welds and seams, allowing designers to produce much tighter bends and curves. These advanced aluminum Super Forming production techniques allow for a more sculpted body and sharp power lines. The result is a new body with improved aerodynamics that delivers a smoother, quieter and more stable ride at higher speeds. Under the hood, the Continental GT is powered by Bentley’s six-liter, 12-cylinder, twin-turbocharged 567 bhp engine mated to a new Quickshift transmission capable of double downshifts. And, thanks to advanced FlexFuel technology, the engine also can run on both standard unleaded gasoline and sustainable bioethanol (up to E85) or any mix of the two. All this power delivers a 0-60 mph clocking in 4.4 seconds and a top speed of 198 mph. Later this year, an all-new, high-output eight-cylinder engine will be available. It’s an advanced power engine and will deliver a 40 percent reduction in emissions, compared with the W12 engine. Both engines are mated to an all-wheel drive system with a sporty rear-torque bias to minimize understeer during hard cornering, allowing more experienced drivers to control the car’s line and balance with pre-

cise throttle manipulation. On the inside, the cabin is handcrafted, with a bold, sweeping dashboard and instrument panel finished in premium softtouch leather. The distinctive cobra-design seats give added comfort and rear cabin space has been “enhanced.” A new touchscreen 30GB infotainment system includes new advanced satellite navigation with dynamic route guidance, seven-digit postal code entry and Google Map compatibility. Audio systems have the latest wide frequency Balance Mode

Don’t Sir Around — Get Moving! Miss Miami Beach USA/Teen, June 5th BY CHARLOTTE LIBOV
Those who know me know that my favorite time of the day is early morning; I rise at 6:30 a.m. and I head out to the beach, briskly walking the several blocks from my apartment to the Starbucks on Ocean Drive. As I do, I pass by several joggers, as well as a morning yoga class. That’s one of the benefits of living on South Beach – we’re never at a loss for the opportunity to exercise. But not all of us do this – I know that there is an ample bunch of sitters among us on Miami Beach, and I am too often guilty of that as well. Recently, a study published by an American Cancer Society epidemiologist tracked the health of 123,000 men and women over a period of 12 years, and found that the longer of time each day people spent sitting, the more they shortened their lifespan. In fact, the overall death rate was 20 percent higher for men who spent three hours a day sitting or less, and about 40 percent higher for women who spent six hours a day sitting. Reading that, I felt quite smug. “I don’t spend a lot of time sitting around, I thought smugly, upon reading that. But then I reconsidered. “I may not spend a lot of time sitting around, I thought to myself – “But sitting in front of the computer – that’s another story. That’s right—even though I don’t spend my time in front of a TV, I spend at least eight hours a day sitting in front of a computer screen, and probably a lot more than that as well. Factor in surfing the Internet, Facebook and Twitter, and it’s not a pretty story.
Happily, studies also show that the health hazards of inactivity, which include heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and some even some forms of cancer, can be reversed by inactivity. And so, I’ve decided that, based on that eight hours, I will spend twothree hours being active. Over the years, one thing I’ve learned is that variety is important to staying interested in being active and, thanks to our beautiful environment, I have plenty of opportunity to mix it up. So I’ve rededicated myself not only to being active, but also pausing throughout the day – throughout that sitting – to get up and move. My plan is that morning beach walk and then back to the computer until about 10:30 a.m., when it’s off to Equinox South Beach for two morning classes, perhaps Zumba, followed by Kettle Bells, for a mix of cardiac and strength-building activities. And then back to the computer, but up again, to head back to the gym for some cardio on the elliptical trainer. And, after that – well, it’s off to a dance club. This is Miami Beach after all! Mount Sinai hosts 9th Annual International Alzheimer’s Symposium Medical experts from around the world gathered at The Eden Roc Hotel on Friday, April 29 and Saturday, April 30, to discuss the latest breakthroughs in Alzheimer’s Disease treatment and diagnosis at the 9th annual Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) Symposium hosted by Mount Sinai Medical Center. The annual symposium aims to provide a forum for new information and in-depth discussions about advances in research related to the clinical diagnosis and progression of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). This year’s symposium emphasized the early stages of AD and presented results from several longitudinal and cross-sectional studies that explored risk factors, diagnosis and progression of Alzheimer’s, mild cognitive impairment and dementia. Dr. Ranjan Duara, Director of The Mount Sinai Wien Center for Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders and host of the event, stresses the importance of early diagnosis of the disease. “Part of our discussions at this symposium is about determining how doctors can detect the disease in its earliest stages, just like we detect

high cholesterol in people’s blood and start treating high cholesterol whether or not patients have any symptoms. The same goes for treating Alzheimer’s early so we can prevent the disease from escalating. “ International experts from the United
States, Australia, France, England, Canada, and Netherlands gave presentations on various topics related to Alzheimer’s diagnosis, treatment and research. This year’s keynote speakers were Dr. Christopher Rowe, Director of Medicine from the University of Melbourne, Australia whose presentation was titled “Early Diagnosis of AD – Now and the Future”, and Dr. Bruno Dubois, Professor at the Federation de Neurologie Hospital de la Salpetriere in Paris, France whose presentation was titled “Rationale for Prodromal and Preclinical AD Criteria”. Doctors also participated and exchanged ideas in three mini-symposiums: Risk Factor for Progression from Normal Aging to MCI and Dementia; Studies in Preclinical AD: Diagnosis and Progression; and Studies

in Prodromal AD: Diagnosis and Risk for Progression. Unless ways are found to prevent Alzheimer’s or delay its onset, it is projected that 13 million people in the U.S. will have Alzheimer’s Disease by 2050. Since the development of criteria for AD twentyfive years ago, major advances in our understanding of the biology and early clinical features of AD have led to improvement in clinical assessments which have enabled clinicians to diagnose an earlier stage of the illness, mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The Mount Sinai Wien Center for Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders along with Dr. Duara will continue to host this annual symposium so physicians from all over the world will have a forum to present research and discuss ideas that can provide a greater understanding of the clinical diagnosis, progression and treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease. About Mount Sinai Medical Center’s Wien Center for Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders Founded in 1986, The Wien Center for Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders was the first center in Florida to become an Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (ADRC). The Wien Center seeks an end to Alzheimer’s disease and similar disorders through research, diagnosis, education and treatment and is actively conducting more than 21 research studies and clinical trials about Alzheimer’s and other memory disorders. The Wien Center has garnered prestigious recognition by consistently being ranked a medical specialty leader in U.S.News & World Report’s list of America’s Best Hospitals. The Wien Center’s medical specialists have treated more than 5,000 memory disorder patients with a multi-faceted approach, utilizing expertise in diagnostic imaging, psychiatry, neurology genetics and geriatrics.

Elevators, Entrepreneurship and Excellence! BY JESSE KIRKPATRICK Senior at Miami Beach Senior High School
The Future Business Leaders of America State Leadership Conference, which took place from April 25 to 28, brought drama, excitement, and a great deal of success; 17 Miami Beach Senior High members came home with medals, plaques, and four-foot trophies. Of these, 11 placed highly enough to compete at the National level over the summer. The FBLA State Leadership Conference, much like Districts, is an opportunity for FBLA members to study up on a field relating to business and compete against other highly motivated high school students. The only difference is that this time, all competitors come in having already placed in the top tier at Districts. Competitions consist of written tests, presentations in front of judges, or a combination of the two. The following Beach High students placed at States: • Lyssa Goldberg: 2nd place, Business Communication • Daniel Cohen: 2nd place, Business Math • Rachel Coller: 2nd place, Business Procedures • Alix Braun: 1st place, Business Procedures • Rachel Coller: 4th place, Community Service Project • Esteban Valencia: 4th place, Cyber Security • David Abusiewiez: 2nd place, Introduction to Technology Concepts • Gabriela Lins and Jesse Kirkpatrick: 3rd place, Roger H. Stubing Local Chapter Annual Business Report • Joseph Coto, Lucia Rynka, and Jesse Kirkpatrick: 1st place, Management Decision Making • Julietta Rodrigo: 1st place, Kurt S. Thomson Award for Marketing
• Lucia Rynka: 3rd place, Partnership with Business Project • Gabriela Lins and Willy Chertman: 1st place, Emerging Business Issues • Nadine Goldberg, Jason Albert, Maya Sperkacz, and Gabriela Gerinska: 3rd place, Parliamentary Procedures Nadine Goldberg, junior, scored the highest in the state in the Parliamentary Procedures written test, and should have therefore been named the State Parliamentarian. However, because of an unpublicized change in FBLA bylaws this year, the position was awarded to someone else. Goldberg has been named District 25 Parliamentarian. The successful State conference was not without drama. As FBLA chapters from more than 20 Florida Districts filled the Orlando Rosen Center to capacity (and beyond), the hotel proved unable to accommodate the mass influx of thousands of high school students. Beach High FBLA suffered the consequences. On the first night, after testing had concluded for the day, the conference came to a shuddering halt for Beach High. Twentythree people, crammed like sardines into an elevator, became lodged between floors when the over-capacity elevator shut down. Almost all of the victims were Beach High students. Many jokingly suspected sabotage by rival FBLA chapter Mater Academy. However, the drama was only beginning. After firefighters successfully pried the doors open and everyone piled out, one Beach High student began to experience stress-induced hypertension, and paramedics were summoned. When the student finally retired to his hotel room for the night, Beach High FBLA adviser Jennifer Russell made sure to put all raucous noisemakers in their place in order to keep the hallways noise-free. This year, the National Leadership Conference will also be held in Orlando from June 28 to July 1. Fire Rescue had better get ready.

Robocalls are disturbing our lifestyle BY MARTIN MENDIOLA
US Gourmet Mendiola@USGourmet.US Writing a lifestyle column is fun: we concentrate mostly on food, wine, cigars and all things pleasurable. In essence it deals with the pursuit of our individual happiness which regretfully every once in a while someone decides to disturb. It is worst when the intrusion happens within the sanctity of your home, when you get repeated uninvited telephone calls for the sole purpose of promoting or selling a person, an item or a thing. These calls impact our chosen way of life and could be covered in a lifestyle column. Back when we referred to the prefix of telephone numbers in Miami as Franklyn or Plaza, most telephone calls were welcomed. They were usually from relatives or friends inquiring about our well being or the latest news and/or gossip that had not yet hit the main radio or television news hour. Soon after, as we became more sophisticated and our telephone numbers increased in size, telemarketers started their quest to make our lives miserable. For a period of time you could almost count on receiving a sales call as you were getting ready to sit at the dinner table. The selling of timeshares became almost synonymous with those uninvited calls that ruined your evening. We probably received more of those calls here in Florida than anywhere else in the country. For this reason, Florida became one of the first if not the first state in the nation to pass legislation regulating telemarketers. Eventually, our state legislators passed the Florida Do Not Call Program. For a $10 fee, Florida residents who do not wish to receive sales calls may have their numbers on this list managed by the Florida Division of Consumer Services. A most useful tool when used properly is the robocall. A robocall is a telephone call from an automated source that delivers a prerecorded message to a large number of people. The city of Coral Gables uses it properly to alert its residents of emergencies or when there is a missing elderly person or child. It is used improperly by politicians during campaigns to deliver the same message to the same person several times in a few hours. This is an intrusion in our lives, privacy and lifestyle. Within the last two weeks of this heated campaign in Miami Dade County, we have heard several stories from residents who have received more than 45 calls over a three day period from basically three candidates. We have heard about a family eager-
ly awaiting an emergency call and receiving consecutive political robocalls that only aggravated the situation. These calls are out of control and need to be regulated. While not fully understanding the Florida Do Not Call Statute, there seems to be something wrong. According to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Division of Consumer Services web page http://www.800helpfla.com/nosales.html , there are some exemptions to the law. These exemptions as stated on the site are based in that “some solicitations calls are not “telephonic sales calls” as defined in the statute because they typically are not selling a product or service”. I believe most of us would consider these political robocalls as inconvenient and obnoxious as telemarketing sales pitches. With these political calls, someone is selling a product and service that should not qualify for the exemption of a “political candidate and political parties seeking donations”. The purpose of the Florida Do Not Call Program is to prevent a sales person from harassing and disturbing residents, which is what these political robocalls are doing. Florida legislators who created and can amend this law should examine their political colleagues’ tactics and close this annoying loophole, for they are disturbing our lifestyle.

High water bills? Do you ever hear the toilet run when there is no one in the bathroom?
You either have ghosts or a water leak.
Douglas Orr Plumbing offers some sage advice to home and business owners who may suspect a water leak after a spike in their water bill. The cause can often be hard to find. It could be a cracked pipe behind the wall or in the floor, a toilet running, an outside hose bibb dripping or an underground pipe leaking into the earth. So what do you do when you think you may have a leak? Douglas Orr Plumbing suggests you turn off all of the water outlets inside and outside your home. Go to the water meter outside and see if the meter is moving. If it is not moving, you are usually good. If it is moving you probably have a leak or running water. If you can locate the leak and fix it yourself, great! If not, do yourself a favor and contact a professional licensed and insured plumbing company. Too many times you hear about property owners getting scammed from fly-by-night service companies or unlicensed contractors. Do not let someone come into your house and begin knocking holes in the wall because they think they know where the leak is. Remember, water travels and takes the path of least resistance. Just because you see water coming from a particular place it doesn’t mean that is where the source of the leak is. Before hiring a plumbing company, do your homework. Technology has put the world at our fingertips. Research companies on the internet and see who you are dealing with. Go to sites where you can read unbiased reviews. Below is an unbiased review that was posted on April 14, 2011. It came from Angie’s List, an online publication homeowners pay for to view service company’s reviews. Luckily this homeowner had the sense to do their research and get a 2nd opinion. It reads:
“Douglas Orr Plumbing and Angie's list just saved me $7,411. I had called a local plumbing company because my water bill shot up to $999.12 a quarter. This plumbing company came out, spent a few minutes and said a leak was between the house and meter somewhere, because the meter kept turning when the house main was turned off. They said it would cost "between $6,000 and $8,000 to replace the whole line, because it could not be repaired. He never looked to see where a leak was, as he said it all had to be replaced anyways, which meant digging up the asphalt drive and some trees. I told him I would need a written price, he seemed aggravated by that and said he would have to charge me extra for an estimate. He just wrote $8,000 on an invoice and said it was not guaranteed as it would cost more if they had trouble. They charged me for the visit and left. I then joined Angie's list just to get a second opinion, and found that Douglas Orr Plumbing had very good reviews from customers, so I made an appointment. They came on time, as agreed, looked for and found a leak in the copper line near the meter, dug it out and fixed it all in one visit at a charge of $589.00. Exactly $7,411 less than the other plumbing company’s "nonguaranteed" price. Douglas Orr Plumbing, Inc. was very knowledgeable, professional and everything about their service was first rate. He just left, and I sat down to write this review. There is no question about who I would and would not call next time.” For more information on Douglas Orr Plumbing, go online to www.orrplumbing.com or call 1-800-DOUG ORR.

Making Sense of Reform amid the Changing Tide of Healthcare Currently representing one-sixth of our economy in the United States, healthcare is front and center stage in the public consciousness. And just past the one-year anniversary of President Obama’s signing of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act on March 23, 2010, the health system reform debate rages on. Not since the enactment of Medicare under President Lyndon Johnson over 45 years ago, has there been such broad change to our healthcare system. Critics, who question the constitutionality of the mandate requiring most Americans to buy health insurance, continue to encourage lawmakers and the courts to invalidate the law. Many Americans are still at a loss for understanding the new law as well as how it can benefit them. Skepticism regarding the reform law abounds with many expressing concern over patient protection/ privacy and data breaches. Others believe reform will be far too costly, particularly at a time when Curt Rosner our country is struggling with debt. Many also feel that the law, consisting of 2,400plus pages, is overly complex. Some provisions of the healthcare reform law will not go into effect until a later date. Yet, we are Todd Demel already beginning to see changes to a system characterized as dysfunctional which excludes many throughout the country from obtaining health insurance. Supporters emphasize the gains made under the initial provisions of healthcare reform: Chronically ill patients no longer need to worry about lifetime limits on health benefits. Insurance plans are now required to pay for annual physicals and essential preventive care. Young adults can now remain on their parents’ health insurance policies until age 26. And, insurance companies can no longer revoke policies after a patient becomes ill. Other changes include providing health insurance tax credits to small businesses, investing new resources in fighting healthcare fraud, rebuilding the primary care workforce through financial incentives, and funding wellness programs. Effective January 1, 2012, healthcare
reform law also encourages integrated health systems through the formation of ‘Accountable Care Organizations’ (ACOS). The theory is that within these provider groups, doctors can better coordinate patient care, improve quality, and reduce unnecessary duplication of services. Doctors will be incentivized to reduce costs and can share in the savings achieved. The reform law also establishes a timeline beginning in 2011 to institute a series of rules that reduce paperwork and bring about an electronic exchange of health information. Physician practices that adopt electronic medical records (EMR) will receive incentives that help to defray part of the costs. It is hoped that through this change administrative burdens, costs, and medical errors will be reduced. Our healthcare system has been described as fragmented and inefficient. By moving our traditional fee-for-service system towards a model that links payments to evidence-based outcomes, quality should improve and result in reduced costs. But these changes can only come about as the result of a paradigm shift in healthcare delivery. Ultimately, the vision of reform consists of healthcare providers working together towards common goals. A culmination of dynamic professionals, MF Healthcare Solutions is dedicated to serving healthcare providers with revenue and expense management, strategic planning, and business advisory services. What to do when diets fail… Diets don’t work and that is not your fault. The truth of the matter is that there is a r e a l problem with diets and it’s not Danielle Gribble, Owner your fault when the diet fails. The core reason why we cannot lose weight, or why the weight is regained after losing it over a short period of time is physiological. Both diets and exercise will not release the problem area, fat reserves or reshape the body. We have all experienced fear of what the scale will say when we step onto it to check our weight. There is that uneasy feeling in the pit of our stomach before the scale reveals those numbers we so dreadfully don’t want to see. Once that number appears, the feeling of failure arises because we’ve tried so hard to stick to a diet that only makes us feel hungry and tired. Although the results on the scale don’t reflect what we really want to see, we still cling onto the hopes of losing weight, only to become more frustrated with ourselves. For most of us, we’ve done repeated diets and have successfully lost 10 lb, 30 lb or more, but have regained the weight back that we lost in a short period of time. Some people may have lost weight but cannot seem to lose those remaining pounds in those problematic areas that simply won’t come off. The answer lies within one gland in our bodies which is the hypothalamus. It is essentially the brain of the brain which controls weight, your metabolism and hunger. When the hypothalamus gland is off balance or turned off, the fat you ingest becomes stored fat in the areas of your body that you are finding hard to lose. You are unable to utilize this fat as energy because your body does not have access to stored fat. As a result, dieting only addresses the symptoms but does not
address or correct the underlying problem. When you diet, you lose fluid, normal fat and muscle. With some diets, you can lose both fat and too much muscle. Dieting often starves the body. When the hypothalamus is functioning properly, the fat you eat is processed as normal fat which is “good fat” and used as energy for the body. The only way to lose abnormal fat (stored fat) is to reset your metabolism so your body will function effectively. You will then lose abnormal fat, reshape your body, are less hungry and have higher energy levels. Your body will then burn stored fat as energy and reset your body’s metabolism to a more balanced healthy system. Resetting the hypothalamus gland is the only way to have permanent weight loss. Achieving permanent weight loss is not as impossible as you think. The only way to reset your hypothalamus is through the use of hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in conjunction with a diet protocol for a period of no less than three weeks. hCG is a natural water based hormone that helps the hypothalamus gland control your metobalic rate. Once you reset your hypothalamus, you will then be able to eat moderately without feeling the need to overeat. Your hypothalamus will no longer be off balance and your body will function normally, burning normal fat as energy to where you will be able to maintain your new healthier weight. The coaches at Your Fat Loss Coach are experts on the Dr. Simeons protocol which involves hCG. We are a wellness company that has combined our own methods and therapies to fully educate our clients on the safe, proper way to effectively lose weight and keep it off. This is NOT a diet, but a life changing experience to reshape your body and live a healthier life style. Author Carolina Garcia-Aguilera celebrates daughter’s wedding BY DAISY OLIVERA
www.thedaisycolumn.com Renowned novelist, Carolina GarciaAguilera, gave her oldest daughter, Sarah Wright, away in a high-profile, low-key, very chic wedding to Andrea Macario on May 7. The awardwinning author, who has penned eight novels and a myriad of other works, is a long-time Miami Beach resident. GarciaAguilera walked her daughter down the aisle at St. Francis de Sales church. The bride, an attorney, is Cuban-American; the groom was born in Italy and is an executive with Nokia now based in Berlin, Germany. The maid of honor was the bride’s sister Antonia Wright; bridesmaids were Gabriella and Leila Wright and Sara Macario. The La Piaggia private beach club on South Pointe Drive was the perfect setting for the elegant afternoon reception. The pool terrace was a beautiful sea of mandarin orange umbrellas, bright yellow bistro chairs and tables draped in crisp
white with centerpieces of white hydrangeas and roses in lush greens. The bride wore a pale peach silk and white Chantilly lace cocktail length dress. Instead of a veil, she wore her Cuban great-grandmother Sarah Johnson de Aguilera’s, Harry Winston diamond clips in her hair. A delightful touch at the beachy reception: a carefully arranged table of cellophane-wrapped white flip-flops in all sizes; white frame sunglasses and white paper fans! In no time, we were all traipsing through the sand in our new footgear and later, dancing madly. The whole vibe reminded of weddings I’d attended or seen in New England including Caroline Kennedy’s Hyannis port reception. The lavish menu was created by the La Piaggia chef and the four-tier, decadent, rum wedding cake with delicate seashell motif came from the iconic Edda’s Cake Designs. The groom’s parents, Cesare and Ana Macario came from Italy along with another 40 friends and family. Other guests came from New York, England, Mexico, the Bahamas, France, Germany, Finland, India, Argentina, the Czech Republic and more. They included writers Tom Austin and Brian Antoni; film and television producer, Tom Gorai of the NBC show, Outsourced; celebrity makeup artist Kim Doh; producer Pat San Pedro; artist Rafael Vadia. Free Consultation A Law Firm Dedicated to Protecting Florida’s Families
Generate a consistent stream of referrals by networking strategically BY ADAM MAX
Director of Training, BNI Miami-Dade
Most Business Owners, Entrepreneurs, and In-trepreneurs struggle with time management and the challenge of how to balance their personal time with their work time. Maintaining a continual stream of referrals is known to be an important element of maintaining business success but the common challenge is where to find the time to network – effectively. The answer is actually rather simple. You don’t have to attend every possible networking event to generate a constant stream of referrals; you just have to be effective in a select few organizations that are well suited to reaching your prospects. Effective networkers combine several types of networks strategically in order to maximize their results while investing a reasonable amount of time. Here are five types of networks you should combine to maximize your referrals. CASUAL CONTACT NETWORKS Chambers of Commerce embrace participants from various overlapping professions without restrictions on the number of people represented in any profession. They offer informal mixers, panel discussions, and committees/councils engaged in community issues. Their networking events are mostly informal offering participants the opportunity to connect with a vast array of local professionals. STRONG CONTACT NETWORKS These small yet powerful groups meet weekly for the primary purpose of exchanging referrals. Membership is usually limited to one representative from each professional category, allowing participants to become the resident expert in their field for other members to refer business to. These groups require a greater commitment from their membership and often meet weekly, following a structured agenda, including the passing of referrals. This accelerates the relationships to the point of mutual trust – which is the most important aspect of referral generation. A good example of this type of organization is BNI, a group in founded in 1985 that is now the largest Referral Network of its kind and is found in 47 countries.
CIVIC ORGANIZATIONS Charitable Organizations, Service Clubs, and Non-Profit organizations focus on giving back to the local community and/or on a specific cause. Serving in one of these organizations allows participants to connect with local leaders in the community who share a common passion. Although they are not focused on networking, their common passion is a natural trigger for developing long term relationships. KNOWLEDGE NETWORKS Business Associations participants are most commonly comprised of professionals in the same business or general industry. They provide an opportunity for ongoing education in their specific industry, as well as a place to form strategic partnerships with professionals in a position to drive each-other business. These are also great avenues for practicing Co-opetition which is one of the most strategic forms of business networking, allowing competing professionals find a way to cooperate by focusing on specific areas of expertise in which to refer each other. ONLINE NETWORKS Social Media is a force that cannot be ignored, and when used correctly, the vast array of online networks provide a great way to generate business. LinkedIn offers the opportunity to connect and recommend professionals from around the globe, as well as many groups professionals can join in order to share ideas, build relationships, and generate business. Facebook, Twitter, and others are also valuable tools when used correctly. Online etiquette is something you must adhere to if you wish to achieve results, and each online network has its own acceptable uses. As a starting point I suggest you create an account and read the site instructions. Then tap into your local chambers and associations for training on the effective use of online networking. Ask your relationships where they network and then attend some events with them. Then ask questions of the organizations’ representatives and select the ones that best suit you. Remember, it’s not how much you network, it’s how effective you are.
Adam Max is the Director of Training for BNI Miami Dade - the #1 rated franchise of BNI, the world’s largest Business Referral Organization, and a Pillar Board member at the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce.

The Race is On... Ready, Set, Go! BY JACQUE HERTZ Miami Beach Visitor and Convention Authority Board Member
The meteorologists from all the local stations predicted that, once again, we would have a glorious weekend on Miami Beach and all those living on its sunny shores were happy. So too were the promoters of the local marathon(s) to be held through the paved and lushly planted streets of our beautiful city. The hour is early and the sun has not yet begun to show its rays above the calm blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean, but there is another sea, not of water, that is creating a stir… the sea of anxious persons ready to participate and endure the exhilarating experience of a marathon – a run of endurance – a run of commitment. Over the years Miami Beach has been host to a variety of marathons such as the Nautica South Beach Triathlon, the 13.1 Marathon Miami Beach and the ING Miami Marathon/Half Marathon/Tropical 5K. The Miami Beach Visitor and Convention Authority (MBVCA) has been a supporter of these events from their inception, believing in the cause and mission of the events as well as how the impact of its success would highlight the qualities offered in our beautiful city. With national and international recognition being achieved through years of hard work and excellent promotion, Miami Beach is privileged to be the host city of these major events that not only showcase the natural beauty of our city, but also enhance the goal of our national figures to promote good physical education and a commitment of the encouragement of our nation for a healthier lifestyle. Events such as these started with a dream and now have become anticipated events bringing people from around our nation and the world to participate. So too is the
national and international publicity through television, the internet, radio, newspapers and magazines. But the MBVCA has not stopped with just the racing through the scenic streets of the City. It has over the past years broadened its horizon and taken a different type race to the sandy shores. Yes, a race on the beach. But that race is unique as you do not see the normal two legged racers but rather magnificent fourlegged horses and, their race is called Beach Polo. This is a race not only requiring the stamina and endurance of the horses, but also the skill and accuracy of their riders. Now you ask yourself how polo can be played on our pristine beaches and I will extend an invitation to you to pack a picnic lunch and spread your blanket on the beach peering over the arena. This year six international teams from around the world competed for the “La Martina Trophy” as well as an additional eight international women’s teams who traveled to Miami Beach to compete in this exciting event. You have seen polo played on the manicured lawns in England or in West Palm Beach, but never on the sandy shores of Miami Beach where there is such excitement in the air as the polo players mount their horses. Two goals are at each end of the field and the matches are amazing to watch. I believe that even the horses know just how special the game is as they seem to “strut” into the playing field with an eye on the beautiful blue waters and the groomed white sand. The crowds for both marathons and beach polo matches show enthusiasm and whether it is a 2 or 4 legged race and whether it is a finish line or a goal, all that enter the race know that they have participated in an event of a lifetime, in a City that opens its arms to events of challenge and endurance knowing that all who participate, whether in the actual race or in reading about it on the internet, in a newspaper or magazine or seeing it on television, will take with them a memory of our Miami Beach … a City that opens its arms to all in hopes that they will always treasure the beautiful sights and hospitality offered to them. Till the next race…
