The Future of Miami Beach Lands on a Decision BY JIMMY MORALES
City Manager
After 10 years of discussion and one year of analysis of proposals, Miami Beach City officials are on the cusp of choosing between two world class design teams, South Beach Ace and Portman / CMC, for its one billion dollar public/private Convention Center project. Both teams submitted plans to redevelop the 52-acre site, which incorporates the 22-acre Convention Center, two parking lots, the 17th Street parking garage and the Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater. Both plans attempt to transform the Convention Center district into a new vibrant neighborhood with year-round activities by increasing outdoor public space, and creating a walkable district providing connectivity between the Convention Center, Lincoln Road and the City’s historical and cultural district. In June, the selection process for the winning team entered an advanced due diligence phase. Traffic analysis comments from the City’s Planning and Public Works Departments were submitted to both teams and subsequent meetings have taken place to discuss the issues and concerns brought about by City staff. Local neighborhood groups, including the Quality Education Committee, are also involved in the process. Several city advisory board and committee meetings have occurred and additional meetings are being scheduled. On June 18 a special meeting of the Convention Center Advisory Board took place where the board expressed their preference for the Portman/CMC team by a 4/3 vote. On June 25 a special meeting of the Planning Board will take place, followed by a July 8 special meeting of the City Commission Land Use and Development Committee. The focus of the Land Use and Development Committee meeting will be for City staff to recommend a specific master plan program, and for the Committee to review staff recommendations on the program elements. This process will culminate with a City Commission meeting later this summer, to select the team and approve the November referendum language. The city and its staff will assure local busi-

ness owners, the two development teams and, most importantly, the residents of this community that the process continues to be transparent, open and fair. Two top notch teams have
been shortlisted and are ready to stand up to the challenge of becoming the City’s partner in the development and execution of this pivotal project. We are fortunate to be in this position.
Welcome to the beautiful Miami Beach summer friends! There is no better place to be. Our city has so much to offer from fun in the sun, beautiful beaches, the greatest hotels, fantastic dining, outstanding shopping, and the most impressive arts and culture community. Why would anyone go anywhere else? And we are so blessed to have what I believe is truly the greatest chamber in the world. I have been so fortunate to serve as your chair for the past 9 months and it has been incredible. I have made so many meaningful relationships from my involvement in our dynamic chamber for so many years and it never stops. My best friends are so many of the talented people that I have met through my involvement in the chamber over the past 15 years. I am so proud of the Chambers accomplishments. Outside of providing great service to our membership and creating the best environment for the magic to happen, we continue to grow, produce more opportunities and give so much back to our great community. At the end of the day, it is all about community. Each year with our success we have been able to fund more dollars to our Miami Beach Chamber Education Foundation which provides more funds year after year to the city to support the International Baccalaureate program. Take it to the Park This Summer with Coca-Cola A jog at Flamingo or Lummus Park this summer could be worth up to $100,000. From now until July 15, Americans can help their favorite national, state and local parks win a recreation grant for improvements through Coca-Cola’s fourth-annual America Is Your Park program. The initiative encourages people to get active outdoors for a chance at four grants and the title of “America’s Favorite Park.” “Through America Is Your Park and all of our Coca-Cola summer programs, we hope to show people how fun and rewarding it can be to get moving outdoors,” said Stuart Kronauge, General Manager, Sparkling Beverages, Coca-Cola North America Group. “We set a goal to inspire 3 million people to get moving this summer and there’s no better place to start than at the park.” This year, the more people move, the more votes they can earn for their favorite park. By registering at Coke.com/Parks and linking their foursquare and MapMyFitness accounts, individuals can “Take It To The Park” to turn physical activity into votes: • Earn 10 votes each day by logging at least 20 minutes of physical activity using MapMyFitness • Earn five votes per day by “Checking in” at a park via foursquare • Earn one vote by clicking online at Coke.com/Parks using a computer or smartphone To encourage more activity outdoors, votes will also be doubled on the first day of summer (June 21) and the last weekend of voting (July 13 and 14). The three parks that receive the most votes by July 15, 2013 will be awarded recreation grants in the following amounts: First Place – $100,000; Second Place – $50,000 and Third Place – $25,000. In addition, a
$15,000 grant will be awarded at random to another park that places in one of the remaining top 25 spots. These recreation grants are provided to help restore, rebuild or enhance activity areas in the park where people can play and be active. This program is part of Coca-Cola’s summer initiative “Get the Ball Rolling.” The Company is hosting events and programs across America that celebrates the joy of activity with the goal of inspiring 3 million Americans to be active this summer. In addition to America Is Your Park, Coca-Cola is distributing thousands of branded soccer balls at major events through MyCokeRewards.com. Also, every summer weekend, starting June 21 through Labor Day, one Shine by MisFit™ activity tracker will be distributed every hour from sunrise to sunset Eastern Daylight Time to a lucky individual. These activities build on the Company’s global commitments to help fight obesity and be part of the solution. Coca-Cola believes that when people come together – and have fun – good things happen. Lace up those gym shoes, put on your soccer cleats and get outside for a chance to help your favorite park win or earn great prizes.

PlanetSolar drops anchor in Miami and begins ‘Deep Water’ scientific expedition on the Gulf Stream Having left St. Martin on May 23, the catamaran reached her first 2013 American stopover on June 1 after 9 days of solar navigation in weather conditions below seasonal averages. This stage marks the beginning of PlanetSolar’s American tour and most importantly, the launch of the “PlanetSolar DeepWater” scientific expedition. This mission will allow researchers from the University of Geneva to take advantage of the exclusive features of the largest solar boat in the world to conduct a unique campaign of physical and biological measurements along the Gulf Stream. The boat and her crew are docked in Miami from 1 to June 6, 2013—a crucial stopover because a final phase of instrument testing will be conducted there before setting off in conquest of one of the most important regulators of European and North American climates. The MS Tûranor PlanetSolar departed from St. Martin on May 23, and reached the shores of the United States on June 1. The ship will begin the practical stage of her second life—dedicated to science—as part of the expedition that will study the Gulf Stream, one of the most important regulators of European and North American climates. In fact, the solar boat will transform into a genuine scientific platform in Florida and will serve a team of researchers from the University of Geneva (UNIGE), led by Professor Martin Beniston, climatologist and director of the Institute of Environmental Sciences at the University of Geneva (UNIGE). Through the month of August, the interdisciplinary team of scientists will travel over 8,000 kilometers along the Gulf Stream, between Miami (United States) and Bergen (Norway), via New York, Boston, St. John’s (Canada), and Reykjavik (Iceland). This unique campaign will lead researchers to “navigate along the Gulf Stream and collect scientific data, from both water and air, in order to better understand complex interactions between the ocean and the atmosphere as well as the role of these interactions in climate change” says Professor Beniston. In parallel, a pedagogical team has developed educational activities and resources designed to make young people aware of climate change and its impact. The MS Tûranor PlanetSolar will significantly contribute to an unprecedented data collection of this ocean current, since the absence of pollution emissions will guarantee that the atmospheric measurements won’t be distorted by residues associated with fuel combustion. The boat also has numerous advantages, such as a world-renowned navigational experience and the fact that she can load her crew plus up to 4 scientists on board. Enthusiastic about starting this measurement campaign, Gérard d’Aboville, captain of the boat, said, “Up to this point, we were in transit in a sense. In a few days we will begin this scientific expedition—the raison d’être of our
sion system—the surface propellers were replaced by a completely immerged system. For 2013, the MS Tûranor PlanetSolar’s crew is comprised of: Gérard d’Aboville (Captain), Stéphane Marseille (Second), Antoine Simon (electrical engineer), and Hugo Buratti (seaman and steward). During the “PlanetSolar DeepWater” expedition, the UNIGE scientific team will round out the crew. After leaving Las Palmas (Spain) on April 26, 2013, the largest solar boat in the world reached Marigot, St. Martin (French West Indies) 22 days later. A new feat for the MS Tûranor PlanetSolar, who broke her own world record speed for a solar-powered transatlantic crossing, set in 26 days during her trip around the world. In order to fund the 2013 campaign, PlanetSolar SA is supported by the University of Geneva, Ciel électricité, Switcher, the Swiss AOC-IGP Association, Younicos, Plantbacter, Actides, GoPro, Jean-René Germanier SA, BCCC Attorneys-at-Law, Tempur, Hempel, Présence Suisse, Energissima, l’UIM, YELLO, and Waste Free Oceans.

trip — and life onboard will be organized entirely around the measurements that the University of Geneva researchers will carry out. The entire crew is highly motivated and is getting involved in the final assemblage of the measurement instruments.” In addition, the MS Tûranor PlanetSolar will sail to the northernmost part of the Atlantic for the first time. “Navigation conditions will change; we are taking leave of the trade winds that have been accompanying us since the Canary Islands to travel along the roving Gulf Stream, first along the American coast, then across the Atlantic,” explains the captain. Moreover, this Miami stopover is also the first opportunity to demonstrate to Americans the practical applications of a ship propelled uniquely by photovoltaic energy. Miami, final phase of scientific instrument testing before the PlanetSolar DeepWater expedition In order to collect a continuous series of physical and biological measurements in the water and in the air, the ship will be equipped with 6 advanced instruments, including the “Biobox”, an instrument that was specifically developed by the Applied Physics Group at
the University of Geneva. It is dedicated to studying aerosols at the interface between the atmosphere and the ocean, and is the only instrument to date capable of instantaneously determining the identity of aerosols using laser technology. It will be used aboard the MS Tûranor PlanetSolar for the first time. With the framework of the major and final phase of testing on the high seas, the last instrument calibrations will take place in Miami.
ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY OF GENEVA Founded in 1559 by Jean Calvin and Théodore de Bèze, the University of Geneva (UNIGE) is now the second largest “Haute École” in Switzerland, and ranks among the top 100 universities in the world. Crown jewel of the Calvin community, the institution enjoys a privileged international reputation and cultivates its openness to the world. UNIGE welcomes approximately 16,000 students each year to its eight colleges, dealing with the essential domains of science, medicine, literature, economic and social sciences, law, theology, psychology, education, translation, and interpretation sciences. UNIGE has three missions: education, research, and service to the community. Additionally, UNIGE has been a member of the League of European Research Universities (LERU) since 2002. The University of Geneva would like to thank the Wright Foundation, the Henri Moser Foundation, and a generous anonymous donor for their support for the PlanetSolar DeepWater scientific campaign.
ABOUT PLANETSOLAR The MS Tûranor PlanetSolar, built in Kiel, Germany, is a catamaran powered exclusively by solar energy. On May 4, 2012, after sailing for 584 days and travelling over 60,000 km, the MS Tûranor PlanetSolar completed the first solar-powered trip around the world. For her 2013 expeditions, the MS Tûranor PlanetSolar underwent major maintenance operations. Among the extensive maintenance tasks and optimizations carried out, noteworthy are the cabin refurbishment, the creation of a walkway on the solar bridge, an increase to water tank capacity, and an improvement to the rudder. The most significant optimizations were related to the propul-

‘Before Midnight’ is a Beautiful, Honest Look at Love Over Time BY LAUREN COHEN
When we last saw Jesse and Celine in 2004’s ”Before Sunset,” Celine (Julie Delpy) was dancing around to Nina Simone in her Paris apartment before she turned to Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and said, “Baby, you are going to miss that plane.” Jesse, with a look on his face of pure enchantment, then responded with, “I know.” And with those perfect ending lines, we were left with a rousing sense of hope. We didn’t know for sure what would become of Jesse and Celine, but it didn’t matter: it was clear these two were complete and utter magic. But to truly understand the impact of these final words, we first need to backtrack to the film that started it all: 1995’s “Before Sunrise.” In the first film of the “Before” series, we’re introduced to Celine and Jesse, two travelers in their early 20’s who meet on a train to Vienna. They spontaneously decide to get off together, and spend an entire day getting to know each other and falling head-over-heels in love. Which brings us to “Before Midnight,” the third and final addition to Richard Linklater’s “Before” trilogy. In line with the previous films, this one takes place nine years after “Sunset” — after we heard those poetic ending lines. The film opens with Jesse taking his son from his previous marriage to the airport after spending the summer together in Greece. He heads back to the car, where Celine and their two beautiful daughters are waiting for him. Clearly distressed after the goodbye, Jesse broaches the subject of them moving from France to the United States so he can be closer to him. Right away you can see that this is something that brings the tension in their relationship to the surface — tension that ebbs and flows in varying degrees for the remainder
MOVIE REVIEW of the picture. It’s evident how close these roles are to Hawke and Delpy’s hearts; they’ve helped create them from scratch, after all. But I honestly believe that no other actors could match the sort of magnetic chemistry these two have. And the best part: it has only strengthened with time. These characters, now 18 years older than when we first met them, feel very much like old friends. And for that reason, it’s all the more painful to watch them fight. Part of the genius in the writing is that you’ve likely never imagined what it would be like for these two to get in such a heated argument, yet everything they say during their altercation, every low-blow or provocation, feels like something these characters would turn to. The script was a collaborative effort between Linklater, Delpy and Hawke, and it shows. Whether they’re candidly conversing about their relationship or verbally sparring, it feels fluid and raw, to the point where it always sounds like we’re listening in on a very private conversation that we should have no part in. Linklater’s minimalist touch allows us to focus on nothing but these characters and what they’re saying to each other; the idea of watching two people walk and talk for an hour and a half seems mind-numbingly boring on paper, but when Jesse and Celine do it, it’s fireworks. “Before Midnight” is easily one of the very best of the year so far. It’ll make you smile. It’ll break your heart. But more than anything, it’ll leave you with an unwaveringly honest portrait of how even the most passionate love evolves over time. Rating: A

The Proof is in the Results `Do you know what kind of results you are getting from your networking? Most of us generally don’t. Of course we know that we get some referrals, but we don’t really know where from, or which activities are producing the most results. Are most of our referrals coming from past clients or from referral partners? We usually don’t know because we don’t track it. We don’t do that because we are too busy trying to keep all of the aspects of our business and lives going smoothly. We spend most of our time working on our business and not in our business. We need a good program or way to track our referrals, including where they came from, if they turned into business or not, and what we are doing for the person who gave us the referral, if anything. If we don’t know where our referrals are coming from, then how are we going to know what networking activities we should be doing and not doing? Personally, I use the program www.relate2profit .com, it is an excellent way to track referrals, schedule activities, and easily access who we know and from
where. Now, generally speaking, most of us focus on referrals from past clients. Whenever I ask someone about their business relationships, they almost always think of past clients. Now that of course is an excellent source of business you should cultivate, however also concentrate on referral sources. People with whom you have never done business but refer mutually for each other’s benefit. Networking has a way of sucking us in with all of the events we go to and lunches we have and coffee with others. We end up with all of this activity and time spent before we eventually realize, it’s not working. It’s because we aren’t tracking what we are doing and where our referrals are coming from. We also probably aren’t focused on the right people. Learn to plan and track all of your business activities so we cut down on wasted time and effort. Remember, networking is about 10% activities and events, and 90% relationship building. So track and plan as focused as possible and you will be doing yourself a huge favor. Until next time, happy networking!

Epicure with Love S u m m er S i zz l er s
BY MICHAEL LOVE
Specialty Chef Epicure Gourmet Market & Café I recently have been receiving emails requesting ideas and recipes for fruits and vegetables that have been sitting around for a few days that are just a tad less than fresh. It is amazing how much food is thrown out in households across America, over 33 million tons per year. Finding creative ways to use food trimmings, overripe fruits, forgotten vegetables, leftovers from the night before and everything else I can find in the kitchen has become my mission and my passion. Many people are stuck on the “fresh food” bandwagon whereby if the food item isn’t super fresh, or in the case of fruit just picked, it is not good to eat or cook with. The truth is, eating an apple when it is fresh and at the perfect ripeness is optimal, but an apple that has been sitting for a day or two is fantastic when cut into wedges and sautéed in butter. Similarly, overripe tomatoes and rubbery cucumbers have little use in a crisp cool salad but have a righteous role in a blended spicy gazpacho (see below). As I delve deeper into the world of global food waste and take on the responsibility of a new movement to cut down on the wasting of real food by all households across the country (see my food blog www.lovecancook.com), I am discovering delicious and creative transformations of food items. This week, in the spirit of the hot weather and backyard entertaining, I am featuring 3 amazing recipes from your leftover or recently forgotten food items; you can make all of these in less than 30 minutes! A cool, refreshing gazpacho; BBQ Sauce with Roasted Apples and Smokey Parmesan Croutons (available at Epicure). ONE MINUTE GAZPACHO This recipe is simple, refreshing and can be adapted to whatever you have in your refrigerator. 1/2 cup salsa 2 tomatoes, cut into quarters 1 cucumber, cut into 2” pieces 1 jalapeno, cut lengthwise (remove seeds if you don’t want less heat) 1/2 bell pepper 1/4 cup chopped red onion (or white onion, scallions, shallots) 1/2 cup watermelon 1 lemon or lime, juiced Drizzle of extra virgin olive oil
Salt and Pepper Pulse all ingredients in food processor until blended but still a bit chunky. Serve cold.
MICHAEL’S BBQ SAUCE Not too sweet, not too tangy. You can substitute or combine pears, peaches or nectarines if you don’t have any apples. Will keep for up to 2 months in the refrigerator. 1 apple (cored, peeled, quartered and diced) 2 tablespoons butter 2 tablespoons granulated sugar 2 strips of bacon, cut widthwise into 1/4” pieces 1 onion, diced 2 garlic cloves, minced 2 cups ketchup 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 1/2 cup brown sugar 1 tablespoon of each (dried thyme, onion powder, dried mustard, cumin, smoked paprika) In a medium sauté pan, add butter, sugar and apples over medium heat. Toss frequently until apples soften, about 2 minutes. Take off heat and set aside. In a large sauté pan add bacon and onion over a medium heat with a tablespoon of olive oil. Cook for eight minutes until onions soften and bacon is crispy. Add garlic, stir and cook for another two minutes. Add ketchup, apple mixture, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, spices and simmer over a low heat for fifteen more minutes. Taste and add salt if necessary. SMOKY PARMESAN CROUTONS You can use any type of day-old bread for these crunchy croutons. I love to mix several breads together that I have saved in the freezer. 4 cups bread, cut into 1” cubes 1 tablespoon of each (onion powder, garlic powder, dried thyme, smoked paprika, cumin, dried parsley, kosher salt) 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil Toss bread cubes with spices, cheese and olive oil. Spread on a baking sheet and place in 400° oven for 8 minutes. Let cool and then save in airtight container or freezer bag. Michael Love is the Specialty Chef at Epicure Gourmet Market and Café and the creator of “Epicure with Love,” an all-natural gourmet line of food including soups, prepared entrées, Giant cookies, and Xtreme brownies. Michael is also available for private and group cooking instruction and can be hired for dinner parties and events.

Perfect Gifts opens in South Beach Former Pink Palm Partners Expand Collection of Whimsical and Unique Gifts, Cards and Accessories at New Store on Washington Avenue
Cultivating a fan base of both locals and visitors at their hugely popular Pink Palm boutique on Lincoln Road, Russ Root and Perry Martino have opened Perfect Gifts South Beach in a new location on Washington Avenue between 15th and 16th Streets. The new boutique carries many of the same favorite lines as well as some newly discovered merchandise, all with a cheerful and irreverent twist. “Perfect Gifts has the same mindset as Pink Palm, but bigger,” said Martino. “From naughty to nice, Perfect Gifts carries cards, gifts and accessories from baby to grandma to Rover.” Among the expanded items for sale at Perfect Gifts are varied books, items for kids, a larger toy selection, gadgets and technology oriented accessories, and different kinds of barware. The new store also features leather goods, clocks, jewelry and over-the-top novelty items such as bejeweled swim goggles. Much of the store’s merchandise is exclusive to Perfect Gifts in South Beach, Martino added, including Cow Parade figurines, Tokyobay watches, Scojo New York optical quality readers, Grass Roots bead works, a collection of hand-beaded sculptures from Southeast Asia and Crane Stationery. “We may have a new address, but we still have the same eye for the unusual and special. Gifts you really can’t find anywhere else,” Martino continued. “Most of the staff from the other store came along with us, so our customers will still be welcomed by our warm and friendly trademark customer service experience. You just can’t get that shopping online.” Customer favorites are well represented at Perfect Gifts, including Voluspa candles and Lampe Berger Paris air purification and fragrance diffuser systems. A new line of customizable “puzzle” lights that snap together in different formations to create different shapes is one of the new offerings, as is the
store’s complete gift wrapping service – even if the customer purchased the item elsewhere. And cards. Lots of cards. The perfect gift needs the perfect card and Perfect Gifts has an extensive array of greeting cards from racy to refined. “At our core, we are a card shop,” said Root. “The essence of our store’s vibe is people standing in front of the card racks, giggling. Our customers seek us out because they find cards from us they can’t get anywhere else. People will buy hundreds of dollars of cards at a time just to have their own personal inventory and be ready for any occasion.” The new location and name change were precipitated by a 300% rent increase at the Lincoln Road location, a recurring story these days that the partners call the “mall-ification” of Lincoln Road. “It was a simple decision that was made for us,” Root said. A third partner in the Pink Palm enterprise is opening a similar concept in New York after the store closes its doors July 15. “With the stratospheric rents on Lincoln Road, the small boutiques are moving to the side streets,” Root said. “Our new location is just three blocks from our previous location, we’re half-way between Lincoln Road and Espanola Way and we’re much closer to the hotels for visiting shoppers. There are three parking garages and a Deco Bike stand just around the corner from us, too.” “The original store was around for 23 years,” Root said. “We just signed a 15-year lease here, so Perfect Gifts is here for the long haul.” Perfect Gifts is located at 1516 Washington Avenue in South Beach and is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. For information or directions to the store, call 305-397-8097, email or visit info@PerfectGiftsSoBe.com, www.PerfectGiftsSoBe.com.

‘Daddy, may I borrow $25?’ BY GRANT MILLER
Publisher I found the following story on the Internet and we first printed it two years ago. The author is unknown, but I thought at the time that the tale and its lesson were well worth sharing. I think the words are equally important for today. A man came home late from work one evening tired and irritated, only to find his five-year-old son waiting for him at the door. “Daddy, may I ask you a question?” the boy asked. “Yeah, sure, what is it?” the man replied a bit grumpily. “Daddy, how much do you make an hour?” “That’s none of your business,” the man said angrily. “Why do you ask such a thing?” “I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make an hour?” “If you must know, I make $50 an hour.” “Oh,” the little boy replied with his head down. “Daddy, may I please borrow $25?” The father was furious. “If the only reason you asked that is so you can borrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are being so selfish. I don’t work hard every day to pay for such childish frivolities.” The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. The man sat down and began to get even angrier about the little boy’s questions. How dare he ask such questions just to get some money? After an hour or so, the man calmed down and started to think about what had happened. Maybe there was something the boy real-
ly needed to buy with that $25, and he really did not ask for money very often. The man went to the door of the boy’s room and opened the door. “Are you asleep, son?” he asked. “No, daddy, I’m awake,” the boy replied. “I’ve been thinking; maybe I was too hard on you earlier. It’s been a long day and I took out my aggravation out on you. Here’s the $25 you asked for.” The little boy sat straight up, smiling broadly. “Oh, thank you, daddy!” he cried. Then, reaching under his pillow, he pulled out a wad of crumpled up bills. Seeing that the boy already had money, the man felt his anger rising again as he watched his son slowly count his money. As he carefully placed the last bill in place, he looked up at his father with a broad smile. “Why do you want more money if you already have some?” the father grumbled. “Because I didn’t have enough, but now I do,” said the little boy. “Daddy, now I have $50, so I would like to buy an hour of your time. Please come home early tomorrow, I would like to have dinner with you.” The man was crushed. He put his arms around his son and begged him for forgiveness. This story is a reminder to all of us who work so hard in this modern, fast-paced age that we should not let life slip through our fingers without spending time with those who really matter to us, those close to our hearts. Remember to share $50 worth of your time with someone you love. If we die tomorrow, the company we work for will easily replace us in a matter of hours. But the family and friends we leave behind will feel the loss for the rest of their lives. The $outh Florida Gaming Report
The Sounds of Silence BY ISADORE HAVENICK
It is very quiet throughout the summer in Tallahassee Florida. The past legislative session has ended and things are in limbo waiting to get geared up around Labor Day for 2014. There will be a traveling roadshow of legislators this summer as they make their way around the state to gain insight into the climate for expanded gaming. This coupled with a two-part state
funded gaming study will be the catalyst for any potential action that might unfold at the upcoming session. The deafening silence you don’t hear is all the planning and plotting by existing gaming interests around the state paired with the hopes of those looking to make an entry into the Florida gaming market. There might even be a hotel owner or two on Miami Beach formulating their own plan. Smart money says a lot of secret meetings might yield nothing at the 2014 legislative session, but you never know. Most of us thought that Dolphin Stadium would at least make it to a vote of the people.

Summer safety tips to protect your children BY CINDY MAGNOLE
It’s that time of year again; school’s out, no more homework and children have lots of free time to have fun. But during the summer, with the constant outdoor play – including water activities and, of course, the hot weather – parents should be extra cautious about the hazards to their children’s safety. Here are some important safety tips that can help keep your children out of danger and out of the hospital emergency room. WATER SAFETY Never leave a child alone in the water or near the water — not even for a minute — to answer the telephone or check the stove. Children should swim only with adult supervision, even if they are good swimmers. Flotation devices and inflatable toys are just that, toys. They do not replace adult supervision in the swimming pool, a kiddie pool or a bathtub. It only takes seconds for a child to drown. If you have a backyard pool or live on the water, you need to have layers of protection to protect your children. These include window or door locks/alarms, selflatching pool fencing, a telephone nearby and a Shepherd’s Hook or rescue ring should be available. Post emergency numbers and your address by a telephone. No diving into the water. Always go in feet first to protect the head and neck. Select swimming sites that have lifeguards available. Never swim in unguarded lakes or canals because there may be many dangers lurking just beneath the water surface. Unseen rip currents in the ocean take too many lives. Learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Due to the time it may take for paramedics to arrive, CPR skills can make the difference between life and death. If you see someone in trouble in the water, remember “Throw! Don’t Go.” Do not jump in any body of water to rescue someone because they may pull you under. Throw them a rope or rescue ring. BIKE SAFETY Always wear a helmet when bike riding. It can prevent head injuries and even death from a bicycle accident. Helmets and other
JACKSON HEALTH SOUTH NEWS safety gear should also be worn when skateboarding, skating, riding scooters and ATVs. Stay in control, be predictable, allow only one person at a time on a bike. No towing! Watch out for hazards, such as loose gravel, potholes, broken glass and stray dogs. Make sure your children wear bright colors when biking. Teach them that just because they see the driver, that does not mean the driver sees them. Observe all signs, traffic lights, and street and sidewalk markings; ride single file; and when riding after dark use a steady front white light, a steady red rear light and reflectors. SUN PROTECTION The sun is strongest between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., so try to keep your children out of direct sunlight during these hours. Apply sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher to all children over six months old and reapply it every two hours or more if swimming. Use sunscreen even when you’re in the shade. Children should drink plenty of fluids; they are susceptible to heat exhaustion and dehydration. BUG BITE SAFETY Keep your children safe from bug bites by applying safe and effective insect repellents. Use DEET, citronella and soybean oil to the outside of clothing and exposed skin. Never apply the repellent directly to a child’s hands and face; rub it into their necks and ears, staying away from their mouth and ears. Dusk and dawn are the worst times for bugs, so stay indoors during these times or wear pants and longsleeve shirts. For more information on summer safety, go to <www.jhsmiami.org/injuryprevention>. Cindy Magnole is the injury prevention coordinator at Jackson Memorial Hospital and a registered nurse in the pediatric emergency room at Holtz Children’s Hospital. Fourth of July Celebrations Light Up Miami Beach
Whether you’re a local or a visitor, Miami Beach is one of the hottest destinations to celebrate the 4th of July. This year, a variety of events ranging from traditional family fun to posh poolside barbecues are sizzling; but it’s not the temperature, it’s the activities. Ready? Let’s Go! For families, “Fire on the Fourth,” is a perfect choice with live performances from Fred Thomas, the South Florida Symphony Orchestra Quartet, DJ Maximus3000 and a great view of the 9pm fireworks. Get to Lummus Park (at 8th Street and Ocean Drive) around noon to enjoy all the event has to offer. If visitors are not traveling with the family on the fourth and want a more grown-up getaway, then two 4th of July poolside barbecues may be perfect: Bianca at the Delano Hotel is hosting an all-American backyard barbecue where you can enjoy ribs, seafood, white truffle ice cream and other treats while the Joshua Stedman band performs. The event cost is $75 per person and will run from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. On the western side of the island, the Mondrian Miami South Beach Hotel will offer a picturesque pool that overlooks the Miami skyline, barbecue snacks and festive drinks on the 4th. Asia de Cuba, the hotel’s premier restaurant, has also created a special Independence Day menu of American favorites with a Latin twist. This all-day event is open to the public, but a $50 mini-
mum food and beverage consumption per person is required. While poolside lounging is always a great way to spend the day, South Beach wouldn’t be South Beach if there weren’t really big parties – and the 4th of July brings swanky soirees that will not disappoint. The Shore Club, a Miami Beach favorite, will host its One Nation Pool Party, complete with a selection of barbecue items, frozen drinks, beer and beats by DJ Triarchy and RS^2. The pool party is open to the public for a small cover charge of $20 and starts at noon. In addition, the annual IndepenDance Fireworks Cruise aboard The Musette Yacht has an open bar and music from a live DJ. A full dinner buffet will also be available. The festivities start at 6 p.m. and tickets range from $85 for one to $325 for a party of four. And if it’s a spectacular view of the fireworks you desire, Juvia, Lincoln Road’s penthouse hotspot, is offering two seatings on the Fourth of July. Arrive at or before 7:30 p.m. to enjoy an array of crudo, delectable entrees and craft cocktails, along with a memorable view of Miami Beach’s fireworks display. Post-firework dining is also available after 10 p.m. Whether you choose a poolside party or an Ocean Drive concert, the 2013 Miami Beach fireworks show and 4th of July event lineup has something for everyone.

Life is Good at Trump International BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ
So, you’ve worked hard all week and long for a little respite? Well, there is a place just a few miles away in Sunny Isles where time can stand still for a couple of days and the sound of the waterfalls will lull you into a trance. Treat yourself to a weekend at Trump International where Life is Good! Not knowing what to expect, as I had never been to Sunny Isles, I made my way to the resort and knew I had fallen onto something special as I made my way to my room. All rooms have bay or ocean views and are equipped with refrigerator and microwave. Beautifully decorated in tones of lime green and teal blue, which, according to Greg Columbus, Associate Director of Group Sales, brings the outside in for a very serene effect. My balcony overlooked the massive grotto pool with its numerous waterfalls and the beach below. Now where did I put my bikini? My first “let’s get acquainted with Sunny Isles” was a stop at the Dezer Collection Auto Museum. Now, before you roll your eyes, let me tell you how blown away I was. This, my friends, is not your run of the mill car museum. Housed in a 240,000 square foot complex is one of the largest collections of James Bond cars, props and memorabilia. Valued at over $15 million, the exhibition took my breath away. But, and this is a big but, not to be out done, there is Hollywood Cars of the Stars that include Back to the Future, the Munsters and Holy Batcave, Robin……The Batmobile. This is an absolute must see with military vehicles, American classics, European classics and so much more including a 50’s diner. A quick change and I was off to dinner at Neomi’s Grill to sit and look outside at yet another waterfall. Everything on their extensive menu put together by Rising Star Chef Kurtis Jantz looked appealing, but the Chianti “Classico” Shortribs with potato omelet was my choice along with a crab cake to start. If I thought that was unbeatable, it is only because I hadn’t had the fried cheesecake yet. “Yet” being the key word because I ordered it both nights. All I can say is that it was sinful. As I waddled my way back to the room, it occurred to me that I saw a scale in the bathroom. Word of caution: Do Not get on it. With all the great food and drink at the resort, throw a towel over it and forget it. That being said, there is so much you can do to ward off the calories. The resort boasts a newly equipped gym, a massive outdoor lap pool, water sports of every kind, tennis courts or the resort will drive you over to Turnberry for a round of golf. If walking the mall is how you get your exercise, fear not, as you will be transported in style by their
Mercedes Benz shuttle to Bal Harbor or Aventura mall. As morning beckoned, it was difficult to drag myself out of my exceedingly soft and comfortable bed but I had a spa appointment I didn’t want to miss. The Aquanox Spa offers a nice selection of treatments as well as a sauna, steam room and a lounge of tranquility where you can help yourself to teas, cucumber infused water, fruit and nuts. While waiting for my treatment, I curled up in one of their chairs, pulled a waiting blanket over me and watched the flicker of a candle as I felt my body and mind unwind. I experienced the Signature Gold Facial, which is not to be missed and decided to pamper myself even more by getting a sugar body scrub. I think the last time my skin felt that soft was the day I was born. Warning: this could become habit forming.
Next stop, Gili’s Beach Club. This is a hidden gem and the great thing is, you don’t have to be a guest at the hotel to come and enjoy the club. The beach club is an outdoor bar and restaurant with a menu that surpasses any beach club menu I’ve seen. It consists of ten appetizers, Seafood Bar replete with shrimp, crab claws and lobster, six salads, seven sandwiches, six entrees and four tempting desserts along with a kid’s menu. I opted for the Gili’s Salad that is marinated beets, goat cheese, pistachios and baby arugula with red zin-beet vinaigrette. Oh and by the way, I topped it off with a Gili’s Sunrise- tequila, cranberry, orange, and pineapple juice topped with Moet & Chandon and fresh ginger flower. Do I hear an Amen? The beachside bar has TVs and big comfy chairs but if you want that toes in the sand feeling, they will set you up with a chaise and
umbrella. Once set up, there is no need to move, unless you want to take a dip in the ocean, because they will bring the food and drink to you. If, on the other hand, you seek something a bit more private, there are airconditioned cabanas you can rent complete with private shower, TV and frig. Now that is having the best of both worlds! What a fun way to enjoy a day at the beach with the kids, by yourself or with someone special. As I was sitting there with a Gili’s sunrise in hand (no ones counting), looking out at the royal blue umbrellas dotting the beach, it occurred to me that the ocean was meeting the sea foam cushions on the white wicker furniture of the beach club. What a beautiful seascape….it doesn’t get much better than this. An early Sunday morning walk with only the footprints of those before me to keep me and my thoughts company. How light and refreshed I was feeling. A quick few laps in the pool and off to one heck of a breakfast buffet. Inside or outside seating was the first question, and then came the offer of a newspaper and fresh squeezed orange juice. Drinking my coffee and gazing around at the tables I realized that Trump International has something to offer everyone. For the single person who wants a few days to themselves, no problem. There is the beach, pool, spa and several little areas where you can grab a book and relax on cushioned sofas. For the family, no problem. Let Trumps qualified staff at Planet Kids entertain the tots while you two have some adult time. Want to get away with your sweetheart, no problem. The two of you can do as much or as little as you like. By the afternoon, I was ensconced on a chaise by one of the waterfalls dreading having to leave. About that time, a staff member came by offering popsicles to young and old alike. I caught myself taking it all in, the people at the pool bar, the kids in the pool while the parents sat on the side, frozen drink in hand. Couples sitting under the waterfall and all the time, the staff never missed a beat. I found the staff here to have a remarkable energy and genuineness about them that is engaging engaging. Well, as the saying goes, “All good things must end” but as my waiter, Lucian said, “You have to be happy. You get stressed? For what? You die young.” So with those words hanging in the air, my question to you is, “Who’s going to meet me at Gili’s Beach Club next weekend?” For more information on Trump International and their summer packages, visit them at www.trumpmiami.com or 305-692-5600 Debbie Martinez is a Miami Dade resident and Travel Editor for the Miami’s Community Newspapers.
