Miami Beach to receive ‘Outstanding Achievement City Livability Award’ The U.S. Conference of Mayors Honors City
T
he City of Miami Beach has been awarded the Outstanding Achievement City Livability Award by The U.S. Conference of Mayors. The U.S. Conference of Mayors will present the award to Miami Beach officials on We d n e s d a y, J u l y 1 3 , 9 : 0 0 a . m . at Miami Beach City Hall, 1700 Convention Center Drive, commission chambers, third floor. For the past 32 years, the City Livability Awards Program has been one of the most competitive programs sponsored by The U.S. Conference of Mayors. This program selects communities that have developed innovative and successful programs that improve the quality of life for city residents. “Because of its success and innovation, our bike-sharing program was selected as the project highlighted in our application,” said Miami Beach City Manager Jorge M. Gonzalez. “DecoBike addresses our goal of enhancing mobility throughout the community and is revolutionizing the way residents and tourists get around.” DecoBike has become a valuable mode of alternative public transportation with bike station locations that are available 24/7 at or near major commercial and retail centers, parks, visitor destinations, major roads, and parking facilities. When complete, DecoBike will be the most comprehensive, year-round bike-sharing program in the United States with 115 solar-powered bicycle stations and approximately 1,000 bicycles conveniently placed throughout the 7.1 square mile city. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– See

Letter from the Chair BY JASON LOEB
Chairman, Miami Beach Chamber Ah, summer is finally here. But don’t think that the rest and relaxation applies to business on the Beach... our traditional “slow season” is expected to be anything but quiet with the great success of the INcard program. In just two years, we’ve distributed 350,000 cards to residents and loyal visitors, who enjoy special pricing and other benefits from an incredible network of 400 participating businesses. Want to get a flavor for what this program is really all about? I invite you to our second annual “Taste of the INcard” event on June 29. The evening showcases the many wonderful business that make this program thrive. There will be good food and drink, music, a range of retail and services, games and even special visits from some of Miami Beach’s furry and feathered residents. The perks don’t end there, become a card member and you will enjoy additional discounts and exclusive promotions from INcard partners on an ongoing basis. This initiative demonstrates what community is all about: partnering together to contribute to and enjoy what each other has to offer. I encourage you to use it as an opportunity to network. Discover who your business neighbors are... Could they need your services?...Could you need theirs?... If not, do you have a potentially great introduction to make on behalf of your new contact? Your support makes possible the continued development and revitalization that this city is internationally known for. In return, we want to support you. Please contact us at the Chamber if you’re interested in becoming a part of the INcard network. “A Taste of the INcard” takes place June 29th from 6pm-8pm in the Treetop Ballroom at Jungle Island. It’s complimentary and open to the public, so feel free to bring your co-workers, family and friends. I look forward to seeing you there.

“DecoBike has logged more than 100,000 uses in just in just ten weeks with only a portion of our fleet deployed, making it a very successful launch,” said Colby Reese, chief marketing officer, DecoBike, LLC, the developer and operator of the innovative program. “This successful program makes green and sustainable transportation part of our everyday life,” Gonzalez continued. “I am confident that DecoBike will continue to be a successful and valuable program in
the City of Miami Beach.” This year, hundreds of mayors and their city governments submitted applications with a wide range of programs, to compete for the honor of calling themselves a City Livability Award winner. Ten winners were selected from the large cities category and ten winners were selected from the small cities category. Miami Beach was selected for an award in the small cities program (includes cities smaller than 100,000 in population). The 20 award-winning cities were determined by an independent panel of judges selected by The U.S. Conference of Mayors. The City Livability Award program is also supported by Waste Management, Inc.

COMMISSIONER’S CORNER BY COMMISSIONER ED TOBIN
WE WON – Miami Beach under 15 Boys Soccer team wins Regionals on to Nationals! I was so proud and excited to get the call that the U15 Miami Beach State Champion Soccer Team were crowned champions of the Region III President’s Cup Tournament held in Decatur, Alabama on June 12, 2011! As many of you know this Miami Beach team had to defeat over 14 teams to win the State Championship in April. After winning Regionals June 12th they are now preparing for the National President’s Cup Tournament in Des Moines, Iowa July 6 – 10, 2011. It was a challenging and very exciting victory. The Regional tournament consisted of 12 State Champion teams from 11 states: North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia, North Texas, South Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Florida. Coached by Cristian Gabriel Shmith our Miami Beach team had to defeat five different states to claim the Region III trophy. This is the first time the Miami Beach Soccer team has won the Region III Championship and the first time the Miami Beach team will advance to the National Tournament!
I have spent time with the players, coaches and families and I am impressed with their dedication to each other, to the team and their pride in our Miami Beach community. I am also very grateful to our Miami Beach business leaders. Without hesitation they reached out to help our players to raise the money needed for the trip. I would like to acknowledge: Russell Galbut, Marlo Courtney, Jonathan Fryd, Dan Davidson, Scott Robbins, Robert Wennett, Steve Boucher, Michael Larkin, David Arditti, Chris Rollins, Alan Lieberman, Jose Smith, Bercow Radell & Fernandez, Sunset Isands 3 & 4 Homeowners Association and Jill Menzel from Score Sports who not only contributed funds but also donated backpacks, practice uniforms and travel polos for the trip all with the Miami Beach Soccer logo. The team is now preparing for the National Tournament on July 6th and again needs community support to raise the $20,000 needed for food, transportation and lodging for the trip to Iowa. The team is working very hard to raise as much as they can but many of the families do not have the extra discretionary income needed for the additional expenses. If you can help please do not hesitate to call my office directly. We are proud of our team. GO MIAMI BEACH SOCCER! Ed@Miamibeachfl.gov office.

Dona Zemo is so down-to-earth that when you meet her, you never suspect you’re meeting history, but that you are. Zemo, who heads the “Visit Miami Beach” visitor’s center (formerly the Miami Beach Visitor’s Center) is credited with coining the term “SoBe,” which has since not only become synonymous with South Beach, but also helped propel our city into the tourist destination stratosphere. For this, she was given the Key to the City in 2007, but, believe it or not, that’s only a tiny part of her story. Zemo’s love affair with Miami Beach (and Miami Beach’s with her) began in 1982, when she relocated here from Connecticut to help crusader Barbara Capitam save the Art Deco District. Back then, South Beach was anything but posh, and Zemo earned her reputation as a pioneer by becoming the manager of Café Cardozo, the very first café to open on Ocean Drive. Merging her love of tourism with her business savvy, she went on to manage hotels and then launched Tropical Marketing in 1992, to help hoteliers market locally, as well as globally. Soon, event planning also became a Zemo hallmark. She is credited with helping to launch several famous events, like the “Moon Over Miami Ball,” the City of Miami Beach’s Millennium 2000 Celebration on the Beach, Little Havana Nights, Improv “Comedy Nights,” and more. She launched “Deco Tours,” catering to corporate clients, and helped burnish the community’s reputation among corporate leaders like Merrill Lynch, among many others. Among her many tasks is spreading the word about the Art Deco District, and she’s been featured in magazines, quoted in guidebooks, and in the nineties she pened a monthly column in AMICA, the Italian Vogue. Her interests have also extended outside Miami Beach as well; she is very involved in Visit Florida, the state’s tourism arm, and she opened the first Visitor’s Center on the boardwalk in Hollywood as well. In addition to her passion for tourism and Art Deco, Zemo is also a women’s advo-

cate. She’s sat on the Miami Beach Commission for Women since 2004, and served as its chairlady from 2008-2010. She is also the co-founder and producer of the annual “Miami Beach Mayor’s Women’s Conference/ EXPO,” which just marked its third anniversary. She’s also a tireless fundraiser, and, in 2002, was named “Rookie of the Year” for raising over $110,000 as co-chairlady for American Cancer Society’s first annual Miami Beach “Relay for Life” event, and she’s held numerous other chairmanships as well. In terms of honors, she’s been named a “A Woman in Preservation” by a Washington D.C.’s Women in Preservation Foundation, and was honored by the Community Alliance for AIDS Organizations (UFA) for producing the successful “Heart and Home Gala 2007” in the Design Districts, the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce Visitor’s Center was named “Best Visitors Center,” by one of Mast School’s Travel and Hospital Academy. And, of course, her name will always be synonymous with “SoBe.” Writer Charlotte Libov is an author, freelance journalist and photographer with many specialties, including writing profiles for Attorney-at-Law magazine and other corporate publications and clients.

Evolution of Lincoln Road and its Importance to the local community BY KEITH MENIN Miami Beach Visitor and Convention Authority Board Member
New York has Fifth Avenue, Los Angeles has Rodeo Drive, Chicago has the Miracle Mile, but South Beach has Lincoln Road, which beats them all with an auto free deco esplanade that has grown into becoming the center of South Beach, and is the connective tissue between not only the East and West, but between locals and visitors as well. I am often amazed by the amount of shopping visitors do while visiting Miami Beach. I sometimes check guest rooms right after the check out and there are many shopping bags left behind, most of which came from stores located on Lincoln Road. But shopping is not really the main attraction of Lincoln Road; instead it’s the combination of arts, culture, and most importantly the people. Lincoln Road is a perfect spot for European café culture; you can linger for
hours at café tables and enjoy the weather and constant flow of beautiful fashionable people passing by, as well as unique street performers. Also, H&M recently opened its first South Florida outpost on Lincoln Road, and the new store is always packed and you can barely get into the Apple Store for the crowds. The Lincoln Road customer base is thriving with locals and visitors who have it on their must see list of South Beach. But my new favorite addition to Lincoln Road is the new 1111 Lincoln Road Garage, a tribute to the car culture in South Florida. The garage is an incredible place to park your car or host a gala. It brings back memories of when I was a kid, and Cadillac would display cars along Lincoln Road. Its presence, along with Shake Shack and the movie complex, has successfully connected the east and west portions of South Beach, making the west end of Lincoln Road as vibrant and busy as the east and center sections. The crown jewel of South Beach is Lincoln Road, an asset that gets better with time and should be treated like the treasure it is.

Equinox Fitness trainers take healthy message to kids Fitness trainers from Equinox South Beach helped combat the country’s growing epidemic of childhood obesity by participating in the Health Awareness and Career Week held recently at Miami Beach’s North Beach Elementary School. Juan Lugo and Ari Weinstein talked with the kids, gave demonstrations, and generally served as good example to encourage the youngsters to embrace a more active way of life. “Kids love role models. If they see someone cool and hip and young, they can relate to them,” said Lugo. “As adults, we’re already set in our ways when it comes to diet and exercise habits. We can change that to a degree, but, if we start early, with kids, we can really have an influence,” agreed Weinstein. The week’s worth of activities was designed to both showcase different careers and also to focus on the importance of health and exercise, said Michelle Rivera, who teaches physical education at the school. “We decided that, instead of just having speakers come into talk about their careers, we would also incorporate people who work in the fields of health, nutrition and wellness,” aid Rivera. In addition, instead of holding the customary bake sale at the end of the week as a fundraiser, the school sponsored a health walk. Just over 17 percent of all children and teenagers are obese, which is a three-fold increase over the past 30 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control. And, for African-Americans and Hispanics, the numbers are far higher, the government agency says. Obesity is defined as being at or above the 95th percentile for children of the same weight and sex. At the event, Lugo set up a fitness course. The youngsters who completed it were given Equinox Frisbees. The youngsters also participated in a Health Trivia game. “Some of the kids wanted to work out and work out and not stop, they just wanted to do it over and over again,” said Lugo. “I sat down and talked to the kids to find out how much they know about their bodies. We talked about what kind of fitness activities they do at home, and we brainstormed about ways that they can get their parents more involved in activities,” said Weinstein, adding that he was impressed by how inquisitive the youngsters were.
Juan Lugo with youngsters at North Beach Elementary School
“I asked them if they knew what kind of health problems we have, and right off the bat, they started talking about high blood pressure and high cholesterol. They were also very inquisitive. They asked me lots of questions, like ‘Can you exercise too much?’ Clearly, they wanted to know more,” Weinstein added. And Lugo also talked to the kids about how to incorporate exercise into their lives. “I tried to underscore that fitness doesn’t always have to involve working out with dumbbells. I told them, ‘You can run on the beach.’” For his part, Lugo loves to reach out to kids, starting with his son, who is almost five. “My son loves vegetables. I’ve instilled this in him since he was two years old and he’s on the right track. He has no idea what Coke tastes like.” North Beach Elementary School has won awards from the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, an organization founded by the American Heart Association and the
William J. Clinton Foundation to target childhood obesity. Lugo and Weinstein are both fitness experts. Lugo holds certifications from the National Council of Strength & Fitness, is a certified trainer in Kettle Bell Athletics, and also Power Plate, and holds American Red Cross CPR/ ARD certification. Weinstein, who holds a master’s degree in exercise physiology, is also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. Chairman Joe A. Martinez announces launch of new virtual career center for Miami-Dade residents Miami-Dade has recently launched a conveniently accessible online career center, a brainchild of Chairman Joe A. Martinez. Miami-Dade residents can now easily search for jobs from a one-stop cyber portal. This past February, the Board of County Commissioners passed the Chairman’s resolution directing County staff to use its web and media resources to inform residents about jobs in the public and private sectors. In addition to job posting there’s also a wealth of information on resume building, interviewing skills, workshops and training seminars. Miami-Dade County has partnered with the South Florida Workforce Investment Board to use County resources to market its services to both employees and employers. The county will also establish public/private partnerships to allow governments and the private sector to use County resources to advertise job openings. “What makes this different from other
job websites is that this new one-stop career portal allows employers to post job opportunities free of charge and those looking for jobs to search in one site,” said Chairman Martinez. “The goal of this virtual center is to pair qualified job candidates with local businesses seeking to fill open positions. Anyone can gain access to the site whether from a home computer or at any public library.” Residents looking for jobs can visit jobs.miamidade.gov and visit the lefthand menu entitled “All County Services.” A “Career Center” link will lead residents to a job listing, as well as allow local businesses to post open positions. Resume Resource Centers are also available at regional libraries to assist the public in the preparation, scanning, and copying of resumes. For more information, contact Chairman Martinez’ office at 305-3755511.

Miami Beach U15 Boys Soccer team wins Region III President’s Cup Tournament! Miami Beach, FL – The eighteen members of the U15 Miami Beach State Champion Boys Soccer team were crowned champions of the Region III President’s Cup Tournament held in Decatur, Alabama on June 12, 2011. The tournament consisted of 12 State Champion teams from 11 different Southeastern states- North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia, North Texas, South Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Florida. The Miami Beach team defeated 5 different states in order to claim the Region III trophy and is now heading to Des Moines, Iowa on July 6, 2011 in their quest for the National Championship in the National President’s Cup Tournament! In their first match, the Miami Beach U15 team, coached by Cristian Gabriel Shmith, recorded a 1-1 tie against Alabama- Fusion 96, with a goal by Miami Beach midfielder Bryan DeFreitas, assisted by Gaston Villalba. The second match of the day ended in a 2-0 victory with a rout of OklahomaBlitz 96, with goals from Bryan DeFreitas, assisted by Gaston Villalba, and another goal by Gaston Villalba, assisted by Alan Elizondo. The third game, which pitted

Miami Beach vs. Georgia- Atlanta Fire 96, ended in a 1-1 tie, with a goal by Gaston Villalba. With a 2-way tie between Alabama and Miami Beach for the spot in the semifinal match, both teams went to a penalty shootout to decide on who advanced. Miami Beach goalkeeper and team captain, Alejandro Cardenas made 2 incredible saves to keep his team in the shootout and Ignacio Rodriguez made the final penalty goal to help Miami Beach advance to the semifinals! The semifinal game matched Miami Beach vs. North Carolina-WCWAA Black for a spot in the championship match. Goals by Miami Beach forward Gaston Villalba, assisted by Aaron DeFreitas and another amazing goal by Sebastian Mejia, also assisted by Aaron DeFreitas kept Miami Beach in the game
against a very physical North Carolina team. When the game ended in a 2-2 tie, it went directly into another penalty shootout for the Miami Beach team. Goalkeeper Alejandro Cardenas once again came up with a huge save in the penalty shootout and scored the final penalty kick to put Miami Beach in the finals! The finals match between Miami Beach and Texas- Houston Express 96 was a defensive battle from the start, with Houston Express controlling the ball with their extremely fast wingers. But the Miami Beach defense, consisting of Erik SierraFuentes, Ignacio Rodriguez, Johann Amaya, and Otto Quiroz held strong and kept the Texas team from getting a good shot on goal. In the second half, a free kick from Gaston Villalba was headed away by a Texas defender, and Anthony Garcia was able to get the rebound and put it into the net past the Texas keeper to give Miami Beach the 10 victory! The victory marks the first Region III Championship victory by a Miami Beach Soccer team and the first time in history that a Miami Beach team advances to the National Championship tournament! While in Alabama, the team was able to see much of the beautiful sights that the countryside in Huntsville and Decatur has to offer. They were also treated to an amazing bar-b-q dinner to celebrate their championship victory at the World Famous Big Bob Gibson’s Bar-B-Q restaurant! The Parks and Recreation Department, parents and players are diligently working to raise the estimated $20,000 necessary to ensure that the team is able to travel to Iowa! The City is extremely proud of its boys for their well deserved victories and wishes them luck as they advance to the National President’s Cup Tournament in Des Moines, Iowa in July! The Essence of Summer in a bottle BY MARTIN MENDIOLA
Mendiola@USGourmet.US During the summer months when beer becomes monotonous, the fruit in the sangria boring and even the tintos de verano too heavy, Vinho Verdes or “green wines” from Portugal are a great alternative. We have been unable to find the official reason as to how the name came about, but there are several versions and they all seem to be related. The most official and best version we have found is that these wines are meant to be drunk within a year of being made and therefore the name refers to the youthful quality of the wine. Another popular version is that because the wine is so young, it has a slight green shade around the edge, which may be possible to notice on the whites, but we have not even remotely found in the roses or reds.
These wines come from the Demarcated Region of Vinho Verde located in the northwest section of Portugal, an area traditionally known as Entre-Douro-e-Minho, between the Douro and Minho (Rivers). To the north, across the Minho River is the Spanish region of Galicia, to the east there is a stretch of mountains that are most important to the grape growing terroir, the Douro River with the city of Porto to the south and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. There are over thirty five grape varieties cultivated in the area that produce red, rose and white wines. Most of the reds produced are locally drunk while some of the rose and whites are exported. In the United States we are most familiar with the whites, a blend that may include over fifteen grape varieties as authorized by the CVRVV, the Comissao de Viticultura da Regiao dos Vinhos Verdes. These are too many grapes to mention and much worst to remember, but the Alvarinho grape (just like the Albariños from the Rias Baixas in Galicia) is used to make the best and most expensive of these wines. The white vinho verde wines are lemon or straw colored with a hint of lime, which have caused many in this country to assume this to be the reason for the name. Much like South Beach, these white vinho verdes are fun wines and sometimes referred to as the essence of summer in a bottle. They are young, light, fresh and crisp, almost effervescent and have a natural acidity with fruity, floral aromas. The perfect wines to be enjoyed at the beach or by the pool, as an aperitif and go extremely well with all kinds of light fresh foods such as salads, ceviches, all types of seafood and pair really well with spicy Asian, Mexican or Indian food, partly because of their low alcohol level which usually runs between 8.5% and 11%. The vinho verdes from Portugal are among the most underrated wines in the world and lucky for us among the best values, they are usually priced under $10 with
those made with the Alvarinho grapes priced in the $15 to $20 range. The Casal Garcia Vinho Verde Branco is a good one that may be found almost anywhere in town and retails for under $10 a bottle. We have
seen it in some local markets for under $7. At these prices, everyone can try them. The city of Miami Beach should consider making vinho verdes the official wines of South Beach.

2011 Fins Weekend Raises more than $600,000 for Miami Dolphins Foundation The Miami Dolphins Foundation hosted its largest annual event featuring current players, alumni and cheerleaders, FinsWeekend, on June 9-11, 2011 in South Florida. The three-day extravaganza featured an exciting weekend of golf, fishing and celebrities. In all, FinsWeekend raised more than $600,000 for the Miami Dolphins Foundation, whose mission is devoted to providing and supporting signature education, health, youth athletic programs and volunteer activities that inspire and engage communities throughout Florida. “This is such a unique event,” Miami Dolphins CEO Mike Dee said. “I don’t think there is anything like it in sports. It fits our community and we are so fortunate to have so many people that volunteer their time and take a leadership role in generating funds for the Miami Dolphins foundation. This raises money for us to provide the financial basis for us to do things in the community throughout the year. This puts us in a position to fulfill the commitment we have to make a difference in the community.” Now in its 15th year, FinsWeekend has grown into the signature fundraising event for the Dolphins Foundation. “In our first year, we had 23 boats and raised about $30,000. This year, we had over 80 boats this year and raised $600,000,” said FinsWeekend Chairman Jeff Peck. “This is a testament to our great committee and wonderful community leaders that put in the hard work to make this event a success.” The festivities began on Thursday, June 9, with the Celebrity Draw Party, presented by Sun Life Financial in the Harry Soffer room at Fairmont Turnberry Isle. The party included cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and interactive games such as putting, chipping, pitch shot and sand shot for unique prizes. “It’s great for the community and what they’ve done here where they’re able to raise money and get the corporate people

involved,” NFL Hall of Famer and Miami Dolphins legend Dan Marino said. “It’s good to see old friends and players and coaches, that’s always fun. The Dolphins have been great to me over the years so I’m going to support them any way I can.”
On Friday, June 10, celebrities, Dolphins players and alumni hit the greens at Fairmont Turnberry Isle’s award-winning golf course in Aventura for the FinsWeekend Golf Tournament. The golf tournament was followed by a luncheon presented by Doctors
Hospital Center for Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. The winning golf team was comprised of Dolphins quarterback Chad Henne, Tony Segreto, Jack Paltani and Mike Mominey, who represented Nova Southeastern and posted a tournament low score of 57. Later that evening, the popular Hook & Tackle Captain’s Party took place at the Miami Beach Marina, which featured entertainment and a silent auction. At the dinner, Dolphins fullback Lousaka Polite was named the winner of the 2010 Nat Moore Community Service Award. It marked the second consecutive year that Polite took home the award at the event. Polite received the trophy from Head Coach Tony Sparano and is the first back to back winner of the prestigious community service award since former linebacker and current Dolphins pass rush coach Bryan Cox took home this honor in 1994 and 1995. The following morning, on Saturday, June 11, amateur and professional anglers gathered at the Miami Beach Marina for the Miami Dolphins Foundation Fishing Tournament, presented by eDiets.com. Participants enjoyed a day of offshore fishing accompanied by Dolphins players and alumni. In the afternoon, all fishing participants got together for the “Hooters Weighin” where Contender 1, captained by Joe Neber, outweighed Mercury’s O-Sea-D by 13.5 pounds to claim the top overall prize. A record 83 boats with more than 300 anglers participated in the tournament. Contender 1 won a trip for four on the team charter to a regular season Dolphins away game. Later that evening, attendees gathered for the Scott Financial/HMY Awards Ceremony where participants bid on fabulous prizes. With New Name and New Location, ‘Visit Miami Beach’ Expands Mission BY CHARLOTTE LIBOV
The Miami Beach Visitor Center has a new name and a new, roomier location to reflect it’s expanded mission. Now called “Visit Miami Beach”, you can find this visitor’s and concierge center in the lobby of Hall C of the Miami Beach Convention Center. It is open now, and will be fully stocked by the end of this month. A grand opening is slated for September. The new center is poised to take advantage of it’s location by offering services to the Miami Beach Convention Center, while still keeping it’s central mission of providing help and information to travelers. In addition to the regular offerings of reservation services for travelers in need of hotel rooms, cars, and tours, the center will also provide other concierge services, souvenirs and sundry items. Previously, the center offered primarily information, but that will now all change, as the staff will also be to offer concierge service, and book local hotels, cars and even tour
reservations as well on an enhanced basis. According to Dona Zemo, the center’s Director, helping tourists will remain a prime focus on the center. “Well be able to book hotel reservations, which is very important. Most visitors from Europe arrive here without reservations and they’ll walk out of here with a reservation in hand. We’re like an oldfashioned travel agency. They leave feeling safe and secure in our city and it enhances their visit with us,” she added. The center, which will be fully stocked by June’s end, also will carry a full line of traveler’s necessities, including retail items, like souvenirs, cards by local artists, posters, tshirts, guidebooks, maps, event brochures, as well as sundry items for the conventioneers such as allergy medication, aspirin and sunblock. The center continues to be the sole distributors of the Miami Beach InCard, and “Go Miami,” a discount tourism program. The center’s staff includes Zemo and Monique Beaudet, the Assistant Director who, between them, have more than 30 years of experience serving Miami Beach visitors. Other staff members include Visitor Specialists Matthew Perl and Sarabeth Beitchman, along with interns from Miami Beach High School’s Tourism Academy and the Florida International University’s School of Hospitality. A major plus for the center is its new location, which takes full advantage of the Miami Beach Convention Center. In fact, plans call for expanded hours and the location of satellite centers throughout the convention center during major shows. “As the parent organization of the center, the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce is looking forward to a close working relationship with Global Spectrum at the Convention Center as we enhance our services to welcome and accommodate our many visitors”, commented Ceci Velasco the COO of the Chamber, adding, “The relocation gives a
higher exposure to our well trained staff.” Also welcoming the move was VCA Chairman Elsie Howard, who commented, “The Miami Beach Visitors and Convention Authority is in full support of the move of the visitor’s center to the convention center,” said VCA Chairman Elsie Howard, adding, “ We believe that this is a way to reach more visitors, to deliver tourism information to more guests, to provide improved assistance when needed and to ensure that visitors can experience all that Miami Beach has to offer.” Located in Hall C of the Miami Beach Convention Center, “Visit Miami Beach” is open 10-4 daily, seven days a week, with hours expanded during major convention shows. Toyota previews the Prius v hybrid in Charlotte, NC Ron Beasley LET’S TALK CARS I recently returned from Charlotte, NC, where I attended the press preview for Toyota’s new Prius v hybrid vehicle, set to hit the nation’s showrooms in September. I came away impressed not only with the new vehicle, but with the overall achievements of the Prius since its introduction 14 years ago. According to Prius product marketing planner Erica Gartsbeyn, Prius has become the No. 1 selling hybrid in the world with more than one million sold in the U.S. and two million more globally. She added that since Prius came on the U.S. market, it has saved about 880 million gallons of gas, about $2 billion in fuel costs and kept approximately 12 million tons of CO2 emissions from entering the atmosphere. “According to the Carnegie Endowment, if all vehicles on the road today averaged the same 50 mpg that the Prius does, it
would reduce U.S. oil consumption by about 2.4 billion barrels per year,” Gartsbeyn said. “Think of it another way — if everyone drove a Prius, we could reduce our use of imported oil by 70 percent.” That said, the first new member of the Prius family is the Prius v, a midsize vehicle that Toyota calls “a perfect fit for young families who value space, comfort, fuel efficiency and technology.” The Prius v shares the same Hybrid Synergy Drive System as the current generation Prius Liftback, but has been designed to deliver the comfort, convenience and flexibility that Toyota thinks young American buyers want. To achieve that goal, Prius v engineers focused on two key areas — aerodynamics and weight reduction — to help boost the Prius v’s fuel economy and performance. The end result is a vehicle that resembles a small SUV, one that is larger than its Liftback predecessor and with 58 percent more cargo space. There’s a 60/40-split rear seat that slides and reclines for passenger comfort and maximize cargo space at 34.3 cubic feet. Aerodynamic design measures optimized the Prius v’s shape and resulted in an excellent 0.29 coefficient of drag (or Cd). Prius v has the same four drive modes —

normal, Eco, Power and EV — as the current Prius, and produces 66 percent fewer smog-forming emissions than the average new vehicle. The larger vehicle causes fuel efficiency to drop a bit at 44 mpg in the city, 40 mpg on the highway and 42 mpg combined. As for the interior, designers incorporated efficient weight-saving materials in the new Prius, including the optional Panoramic roof made of a lightweight resin that is 40 percent lighter than conventional
glass roofs of similar size. Prius v seats are trimmed in SofTex, a unique material that looks like leather, but weighs about half as much and has more durability. Pricing on the 2012 Prius v Hybrid has not been announced. Ron Beasley is the automotive editor for Miami’s Community Newspapers.
